that_o the_o law_n may_v have_v give_v life_n but_o indeed_o if_o we_o consider_v man_n in_o his_o lapse_v estate_n the_o case_n be_v quite_o otherwise_o for_o man_n be_v now_o make_v weak_a through_o his_o flesh_n and_o unable_a to_o keep_v that_o law_n which_o yet_o approve_v itself_o to_o his_o reason_n in_o that_o state_n as_o holy_a spiritual_a just_a and_o good_a 3._o but_o three_o the_o law_n may_v be_v consider_v in_o its_o power_n to_o give_v life_n with_o respect_n to_o god_n counsel_n and_o purpose_n fix_v concern_v the_o end_n and_o mean_n of_o man_n salvation_n from_o all_o of_o god_n can_v have_v be_v frustrate_v of_o its_o intendment_n for_o never_o yet_o be_v any_o save_v by_o any_o work_n of_o their_o own_o but_o the_o give_v of_o the_o law_n to_o man_n in_o grace_n be_v make_v for_o man_n salvation_n through_o faith_n and_o believe_v in_o christ_n yet_o it_o be_v very_o difficult_a to_o imagine_v how_o the_o providence_n of_o god_n can_v have_v bring_v this_o about_o otherwise_o than_o by_o first_o make_v a_o covenant_n of_o work_n with_o man_n then_o suffer_v he_o to_o fall_v and_o violate_v it_o and_o so_o be_v conclude_v under_o sin_n and_o wrath_n i_o say_v it_o be_v hard_o to_o imagine_v how_o otherwise_o god_n can_v have_v give_v out_o the_o promise_n to_o they_o that_o shall_v believe_v in_o jesus_n christ_n this_o i_o shall_v yet_o further_o open_a to_o you_o in_o five_o or_o six_o particular_n to_o this_o end_n i_o shall_v entreat_v you_o to_o consider_v 1._o that_o man_n be_v create_v in_o a_o state_n of_o innocency_n the_o scripture_n say_v so_o that_o in_o the_o image_n of_o god_n he_o create_v man_n and_o that_o be_v expound_v to_o we_o by_o the_o apostle_n to_o have_v be_v in_o knowledge_n righteousness_n and_o holiness_n and_o indeed_o it_o be_v impossible_a that_o he_o shall_v come_v out_o of_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n other_o than_o holy_a and_o righteous_a divine_n say_v the_o image_n of_o god_n lay_v in_o righteousness_n and_o holiness_n and_o that_o dominion_n over_o the_o creature_n with_o which_o god_n invest_v he_o the_o last_o indeed_o be_v not_o necessary_a but_o come_v immediate_o out_o of_o the_o hand_n of_o a_o holy_a god_n it_o be_v necessary_a that_o he_o shall_v be_v create_v in_o righteousness_n and_o holiness_n god_n see_v all_o that_o he_o have_v make_v that_o it_o be_v good_a good_a according_a to_o the_o nature_n every_o inanimate_a and_o sensitive_a creature_n have_v a_o goodness_n suitable_a to_o its_o nature_n a_o natural_a goodness_n man_n must_v also_o have_v a_o goodness_n suitable_a to_o his_o be_v and_o consider_v he_o a_o rational_a creature_n he_o must_v have_v a_o moral_a goodness_n a_o purity_n and_o integrity_n a_o freedom_n from_o any_o spot_n or_o stain_n of_o sin_n and_o so_o consequential_o from_o any_o guilt_n of_o sin_n god_n make_v man_n upright_o this_o be_v a_o confess_a principle_n and_o need_v no_o further_a enlargement_n of_o discourse_n 2._o man_n in_o this_o state_n be_v not_o capable_a of_o salvation_n in_o that_o way_n wherein_o god_n have_v foreordain_v the_o salvation_n of_o man_n viz._n by_o a_o redeemer_n the_o which_o we_o understand_v not_o the_o way_n of_o god_n in_o three_o come_v into_o my_o mind_n at_o present_a the_o way_n of_o god_n with_o a_o infant_n we_o be_v not_o sure_a that_o all_o infant_n no_o not_o that_o all_o baptise_a infant_n shall_v be_v save_v but_o we_o doubt_v not_o but_o of_o many_o such_o be_v the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n but_o for_o the_o way_n of_o god_n with_o the_o soul_n of_o one_o that_o live_v not_o up_o to_o the_o exercise_n of_o reason_n and_o the_o intelligentness_n of_o the_o ordinary_a mean_n of_o faith_n and_o regeneration_n this_o we_o do_v not_o understand_v 2._o the_o way_n of_o god_n with_o a_o thief_n upon_o the_o cross_n i_o mean_v with_o a_o sinner_n forget_v or_o neglect_v to_o turn_v unto_o god_n until_o his_o last_o hour_n we_o do_v believe_v that_o god_n have_v mercy_n upon_o some_o such_o soul_n but_o how_o god_n work_v in_o they_o these_o habit_n of_o grace_n which_o be_v necessary_a according_a to_o the_o ordinary_a rule_n how_o they_o be_v bear_v again_o of_o the_o spirit_n and_o baptise_a not_o with_o water_n only_o but_o with_o the_o holy_a ghost_n and_o with_o fire_n this_o we_o do_v not_o understand_v and_o so_o three_o the_o way_n of_o god_n with_o a_o heathen_a that_o never_o come_v to_o the_o light_n of_o the_o gospel_n nor_o have_v any_o external_a revelation_n of_o christ_n i_o say_v how_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n move_v and_o which_o way_n it_o come_v into_o such_o a_o soul_n this_o we_o do_v not_o understand_v but_o leave_v it_o among_o the_o unsearchable_a thing_n of_o divine_a providence_n which_o we_o believe_v and_o revere_v if_o there_o be_v as_o i_o say_v before_o a_o job_n in_o the_o land_n of_o we_o he_o shall_v know_v that_o his_o redeemer_n live_v and_o that_o he_o shall_v stand_v at_o the_o last_o day_n upon_o the_o earth_n and_o he_o shall_v see_v he_o with_o his_o eye_n but_o which_o way_n god_n reveal_v this_o to_o he_o we_o understand_v not_o in_o the_o mean_a time_n these_o hide_a thing_n be_v leave_v to_o god_n reveal_v thing_n belong_v to_o we_o and_o to_o our_o child_n and_o this_o be_v reveal_v that_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n as_o to_o the_o heathen_a be_v reveal_v against_o the_o ungodliness_n and_o unrighteousness_n of_o man_n 2._o but_o this_o be_v much_o more_o evident_a concern_v such_o as_o live_v under_o the_o mean_n of_o grace_n and_o offer_v of_o salvation_n oh_o
some_o mean_n the_o very_a heathen_n have_v something_o of_o god_n manifest_v to_o they_o and_o manifest_v in_o they_o for_o the_o invisible_a thing_n of_o god_n say_v the_o apostle_n be_v manifest_v by_o the_o thing_n that_o be_v make_v even_o his_o eternal_a power_n and_o godhead_n they_o have_v natural_a light_n and_o a_o natural_a reason_n and_o something_o of_o a_o natural_a conscience_n too_o the_o work_n of_o creation_n they_o have_v and_o the_o work_n of_o providence_n show_v they_o a_o great_a deal_n of_o the_o eternal_a power_n and_o godhead_n of_o god_n sufficient_a to_o convince_v they_o that_o there_o be_v a_o god_n a_o great_a infinite_a powerful_a god_n for_o he_o leave_v not_o man_n without_o witness_n give_v the_o very_a heathen_n fruitful_a time_n and_o season_n but_o i_o be_o not_o speak_v unto_o heathen_n you_o that_o be_v christian_n have_v yet_o further_a mean_n though_o in_o different_a degree_n too_o all_o have_v the_o scripture_n protestant_n have_v they_o in_o their_o own_o language_n so_o as_o they_o may_v read_v and_o in_o a_o great_a measure_n understand_v what_o they_o read_v all_o have_v the_o ministry_n of_o the_o word_n they_o have_v the_o gospel_n preach_v to_o they_o though_o it_o be_v true_a that_o also_o be_v in_o very_o different_a degree_n yet_o all_o have_v something_o of_o what_o they_o call_v a_o moral_a season_n and_o be_v persuade_v and_o entreat_v to_o turn_v unto_o god_n this_o we_o say_v be_v not_o a_o sufficient_a mean_n to_o bring_v a_o soul_n unto_o heaven_n if_o god_n do_v not_o more_o for_o soul_n than_o let_v they_o have_v the_o benefit_n of_o the_o work_n of_o creation_n show_v they_o his_o glory_n and_o the_o benefit_n of_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n and_o reason_n and_o the_o work_n of_o his_o common_a providence_n yea_o and_o of_o the_o scripture_n and_o the_o preach_n of_o they_o and_o that_o not_o only_o in_o a_o cold_a flat_a and_o dead_a and_o dull_a manner_n but_o in_o the_o most_o lively_a powerful_a manner_n they_o will_v never_o repent_v never_o believe_v and_o turn_v unto_o god_n paul_n may_v plant_v and_o apollo_n may_v water_v long_o enough_o if_o god_n do_v not_o give_v the_o increase_n it_o be_v not_o in_o he_o that_o preach_v and_o persuade_v nor_o in_o he_o that_o pray_v and_o hear_v but_o in_o god_n that_o show_v mercy_n he_o must_v give_v both_o to_o will_v and_o to_o do_v he_o must_v give_v repentance_n unto_o life_n and_o be_v both_o the_o author_n and_o the_o finisher_n of_o our_o faith_n but_o yet_o i_o say_v all_o these_o be_v mean_n some_o of_o they_o very_o great_a and_o excellent_a mean_n and_o the_o high_a in_o the_o order_n of_o external_a mean_n and_o though_o they_o be_v not_o sufficient_a though_o use_v with_o the_o best_a natural_a improvement_n of_o our_o own_o will_n and_o power_n to_o bring_v we_o to_o heaven_n yet_o sufficient_a to_o render_v we_o without_o excuse_n unto_o god_n if_o we_o do_v not_o make_v a_o due_a and_o just_a improvement_n of_o they_o let_v i_o therefore_o plead_v with_o you_o that_o you_o will_v live_v up_o to_o the_o mean_n of_o grace_n which_o god_n give_v you_o that_o sort_n of_o people_n among_o we_o who_o we_o call_v quaker_n call_v to_o man_n to_o harken_v to_o the_o light_n within_o they_o i_o do_v not_o well_o understand_v what_o they_o mean_v by_o the_o light_n within_o we_o but_o thus_o much_o be_v certain_a that_o all_o man_n have_v a_o light_n within_o they_o and_o they_o have_v a_o light_n without_o they_o the_o light_n without_o they_o be_v the_o light_n of_o the_o work_n of_o god_n in_o nature_n and_o of_o his_o work_n of_o providence_n the_o scripture_n and_o the_o ministry_n of_o the_o word_n all_o man_n have_v some_o or_o other_o or_o all_o of_o these_o all_o man_n have_v also_o a_o light_n within_o they_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n and_o of_o reason_n this_o light_n as_o i_o have_v show_v you_o be_v not_o sufficient_a to_o show_v a_o man_n the_o way_n to_o heaven_n but_o it_o be_v enough_o to_o show_v a_o man_n much_o of_o god_n and_o much_o of_o his_o duty_n and_o the_o way_n to_o obtain_v a_o full_a and_o sufficient_a light_n to_o bring_v he_o to_o glory_n be_v for_o he_o to_o walk_v up_o to_o the_o light_n which_o he_o have_v this_o will_v be_v the_o condemnation_n that_o when_o light_n be_v come_v into_o the_o world_n man_n love_v darkness_n more_o than_o light_n because_o their_o heart_n because_o their_o deed_n be_v evil_a but_o to_o shut_v up_o this_o discourse_n 3._o use_v in_o the_o last_o place_n what_o a_o betwixt_o we_o and_o the_o bold_a patron_n of_o freewill_n lie_v here_o they_o hold_v that_o a_o man_n have_v a_o natural_a power_n and_o ability_n to_o action_n formal_o and_o spiritual_o good_a this_o we_o deny_v but_o yet_o say_v that_o man_n have_v a_o power_n to_o action_n that_o be_v moral_o and_o material_o good_a and_o if_o he_o will_v go_v about_o as_o far_o as_o his_o natural_a power_n will_v help_v he_o though_o indeed_o he_o can_v merit_v nothing_o at_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n we_o do_v not_o believe_v that_o god_n will_v be_v want_v to_o he_o as_o to_z habit_n of_o which_o he_o prove_v this_o be_v obvious_a to_o any_o considerate_a reader_n if_o any_o be_v justify_v by_o work_n they_o must_v either_o be_v the_o gentile_n or_o the_o jew_n but_o neither_o be_v the_o work_n of_o the_o gentile_n such_o as_o will_v justify_v they_o nor_o be_v the_o work_n of_o the_o jew_n such_o as_o will_v justify_v they_o as_o to_o the_o gentile_n he_o prove_v at_o large_a chap._n 1._o that_o their_o work_n be_v such_o as_o be_v so_o far_o from_o justify_v they_o that_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n be_v reveal_v against_o they_o for_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n be_v reveal_v against_o all_o the_o ungodliness_n and_o unrighteousness_n of_o man_n and_o as_o he_o at_o large_a show_v the_o work_n of_o the_o heathen_a be_v work_n of_o most_o notorious_a ungodliness_n and_o unrighteousness_n and_o therefore_o can_v not_o possible_o justify_v they_o so_o in_o this_o chapter_n he_o prove_v that_o the_o work_n of_o the_o jew_n be_v not_o such_o as_o can_v justify_v they_o god_n be_v just_a for_o there_o be_v no_o respect_n of_o person_n with_o god_n now_o hence_o arise_v two_o question_n 1._o quest_n whether_o god_n grant_v to_o all_o man_n sufficient_a aid_n and_o assistance_n or_o mean_n of_o grace_n in_o order_n to_o their_o salvation_n 2._o quest_n if_o god_n do_v not_o grant_v unto_o all_o man_n sufficient_a mean_n aid_n and_o assistance_n of_o grace_n in_o order_n to_o their_o salvation_n how_o he_o can_v be_v just_a in_o the_o condemnation_n of_o any_o to_o who_o he_o have_v not_o give_v such_o a_o sufficiency_n of_o mean_n 1._o quest_n whether_o god_n grant_v unto_o all_o man_n sufficient_a mean_n of_o grace_n in_o order_n to_o their_o salvation_n we_o affirm_v that_o he_o have_v not_o but_o here_o we_o have_v many_o adversary_n to_o encounter_v there_o be_v some_o that_o affirm_v that_o there_o be_v a_o sufficiency_n of_o the_o mean_n aid_n and_o assistance_n of_o grace_n afford_v to_o all_o man_n in_o order_n to_o their_o salvation_n some_o of_o the_o arminian_o will_v not_o go_v thus_o far_o but_o they_o affirm_v that_o to_o all_o those_o to_o who_o the_o gospel_n be_v preach_v and_o who_o be_v by_o the_o preach_n of_o it_o call_v to_o faith_n and_o repentance_n there_o be_v a_o sufficient_a grace_n give_v thus_o far_o we_o do_v agree_v as_o to_o this_o point_n of_o sufficient_a grace_n 1._o that_o in_o our_o first_o parent_n adam_n all_o mankind_n have_v sufficient_a grace_n whether_o we_o respect_v external_a or_o internal_a mean_n he_o have_v a_o sufficient_a revelation_n of_o the_o will_n of_o god_n and_o a_o sufficient_a power_n in_o himself_o in_o his_o own_o will_n in_o the_o rectitude_n of_o his_o own_o nature_n to_o have_v make_v use_n of_o and_o apply_v the_o revelation_n he_o have_v of_o the_o divine_a will_n in_o order_n to_o his_o salvation_n and_o so_o all_o mankind_n have_v in_o he_o for_o as_o in_o adam_n all_o die_v so_o in_o adam_n all_o man_n be_v at_o first_o a_o live_v or_o they_o can_v not_o in_o the_o fall_n have_v die_v in_o he_o the_o question_n be_v not_o therefore_o of_o man_n as_o he_o at_o first_o come_v out_o of_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n but_o of_o mankind_n in_o their_o lapse_v estate_n whether_o they_o have_v all_o such_o a_o sufficiency_n 2._o second_o neither_o be_v the_o question_n about_o the_o sufficiency_n of_o external_a mean_n as_o to_o all_o those_o to_o who_o the_o gospel_n be_v preach_v and_o who_o have_v the_o scripture_n we_o grant_v a_o perfection_n in_o they_o and_o that_o they_o be_v able_a to_o make_v man_n wise_a unto_o salvation_n the_o word_n of_o faith_n be_v a_o sufficient_a external_a mean_n this_o be_v again_o on_o all_o hand_n agree_v betwixt_o we_o 3._o three_o it_o be_v out_o of_o doubt_n that_o there_o be_v such_o a_o revelation_n of_o the_o mean_n of_o grace_n as_o be_v sufficient_a for_o the_o manifestation_n of_o the_o glory_n and_o justice_n of_o god_n which_o be_v the_o great_a end_n which_o god_n aim_v at_o in_o all_o his_o dispensation_n of_o providence_n 4._o yea_o and_o four_o there_o be_v such_o a_o sufficiency_n of_o outward_a mean_n as_o be_v enough_o to_o keep_v up_o external_a order_n and_o discipline_n in_o the_o world_n in_o humane_a society_n and_o as_o will_v render_v man_n inexcusable_a before_o god_n rom._n 2.1_o 5._o last_o we_o do_v grant_v that_o there_o be_v a_o sufficiency_n of_o grace_n give_v to_o many_o that_o live_v in_o the_o world_n even_o to_o as_o many_o as_o god_n have_v fore-ordained_n to_o eternal_a life_n but_o still_o there_o be_v two_o question_n behind_o 1._o whether_o those_o who_o never_o hear_v of_o christ_n to_o who_o the_o gospel_n be_v never_o preach_v have_v a_o sufficient_a external_a mean_n in_o order_n to_o their_o salvation_n 2._o whether_o either_o those_o or_o any_o of_o those_o to_o who_o the_o gospel_n be_v preach_v have_v a_o sufficiency_n of_o mean_n in_o order_n to_o their_o salvation_n unless_o god_n be_v please_v to_o influence_n their_o soul_n by_o the_o powerful_a operation_n of_o his_o spirit_n upon_o their_o heart_n overpower_v their_o will_n and_o in_o the_o day_n of_o his_o power_n make_v they_o willing_a to_o receive_v the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n free_o tender_v in_o the_o gospel_n we_o do_v judge_n that_o as_o the_o heathen_n who_o have_v not_o hear_v of_o christ_n nor_o have_v the_o gospel_n preach_v unto_o they_o have_v not_o a_o sufficiency_n in_o respect_n of_o outward_a ordinary_a mean_n so_o neither_o those_o who_o have_v the_o scripture_n and_o ordinance_n of_o god_n have_v a_o sufficiency_n of_o grace_n while_o they_o want_v the_o internal_a effectual_a operation_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n so_o that_o indeed_o no_o reprobate_n only_o the_o elect_n of_o god_n have_v a_o sufficient_a aid_n and_o assistance_n of_o grace_n give_v they_o for_o their_o salvation_n though_o in_o the_o way_n of_o outward_a mean_n those_o indeed_o who_o have_v the_o gospel_n publish_v to_o they_o may_v be_v say_v to_o have_v a_o sufficiency_n in_o respect_n of_o external_a mean_n this_o we_o affirm_v upon_o these_o ground_n 1._o this_o pretend_a sufficiency_n must_v be_v either_o of_o external_n mean_n or_o of_o internal_a mean_n or_o of_o both_o indeed_o it_o must_v be_v of_o both_o or_o it_o be_v not_o a_o sufficiency_n the_o external_n mean_n be_v the_o holy_a scripture_n and_o the_o preach_n of_o they_o they_o be_v those_o which_o be_v able_a to_o to_o make_v the_o man_n of_o god_n as_o apostle_n tell_v we_o wise_a unto_o salvation_n and_o how_o shall_v they_o believe_v say_v the_o apostle_n rom._n 10._o on_o he_o of_o who_o they_o have_v not_o hear_v and_o how_o shall_v they_o hear_v without_o a_o preacher_n and_o how_o shall_v they_o preach_v except_o they_o be_v send_v the_o apostle_n be_v there_o discourse_v of_o the_o ordinary_a mean_n of_o salvation_n you_o see_v that_o be_v fix_v in_o the_o word_n for_o that_o be_v that_o which_o be_v to_o be_v hear_v and_o the_o preach_a of_o the_o word_n so_o that_o what_o secret_a way_n soever_o god_n may_v have_v to_o reveal_v himself_o and_o the_o knowledge_n of_o christ_n unto_o some_o particular_a person_n in_o place_n where_o the_o scripture_n be_v not_o find_v nor_o the_o name_n of_o christ_n hear_v of_o nor_o his_o gospel_n preach_v yet_o certain_a it_o be_v the_o outward_a and_o ordinary_a mean_n of_o salvation_n be_v the_o preach_a hear_v and_o read_v of_o the_o word_n and_o the_o ministry_n of_o the_o gospel_n now_o we_o know_v that_o in_o the_o far_o great_a part_n of_o the_o world_n the_o scripture_n be_v not_o find_v read_v preach_v they_o have_v no_o ministry_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v very_o absurd_a to_o say_v that_o as_o to_o the_o external_n ordinary_a mean_n of_o salvation_n there_o be_v a_o sufficiency_n afford_v all_o for_o if_o the_o word_n and_o the_o ministry_n of_o it_o be_v the_o outward_a and_o ordinary_a mean_n it_o be_v matter_n of_o demonstration_n that_o a_o very_a great_a part_n of_o the_o world_n have_v nothing_o of_o it_o those_o therefore_o that_o will_v maintain_v a_o sufficiency_n of_o mean_n must_v make_v the_o work_n of_o god_n and_o the_o view_n of_o they_o and_o conclusion_n which_o man_n may_v make_v by_o their_o natural_a light_n and_o reason_n from_o they_o a_o sufficient_a mean_n to_o give_v a_o man_n the_o knowledge_n of_o god_n and_o such_o a_o knowledge_n
