my_o word_n or_o my_o word_n by_o your_o doctrine_n do_v not_o all_o christian_n hold_v out_o this_o that_o the_o word_n of_o christ_n be_v above_o all_o authority_n in_o the_o matter_n of_o christ_n must_v be_v a_o effect_n of_o infinite_a power_n in_o the_o great_a god_n this_o raise_n of_o christ_n sometime_o it_o be_v attribute_v to_o the_o son_n be_v god_n equal_a with_o the_o father_n but_o will_v take_v upon_o he_o the_o title_n of_o a_o shepherd_n that_o which_o rather_o express_v love_n and_o care_n than_o power_n and_o dominion_n yet_o he_o be_v please_v to_o assume_v this_o title_n to_o express_v his_o affection_n to_o we_o for_o the_o open_n of_o it_o wherein_o he_o appear_v to_o be_v the_o great_a shepherd_n i_o shall_v lay_v down_o these_o particular_n 1_o he_o be_v great_a in_o the_o dignity_n of_o his_o person_n

enter_v into_o the_o most_o holy_a place_n by_o the_o blood_n of_o jesus_n shall_v we_o leave_v such_o a_o faith_n as_o this_o shall_v we_o not_o hold_v fast_o the_o most_o holy_a faith_n that_o there_o be_v no_o salvation_n now_o to_o say_v i_o will_v keep_v faith_n i_o will_v only_o part_v with_o a_o little_a profession_n it_o be_v all_o one_o in_o scripture_n as_o to_o part_v with_o faith_n itself_o for_o why_o the_o scripture_n say_v if_o thou_o believe_v with_o thy_o heart_n and_o confess_v with_o thy_o mouth_n thou_o shall_v be_v save_v so_o that_o as_o long_o as_o faith_n continue_v profession_n be_v to_o continue_v or_o there_o be_v no_o salvation_n faith_n without_o profession_n will_v do_v no_o more_o for_o you_o than_o profession_n without_o faith_n therefore_o observe_v whit_n the_o apostle_n speak_v heb._n 3.14_o say_v he_o we_o be_v make_v partaker_n of_o christ_n if_o we_o hold_v the_o begin_n of_o our_o confidence_n steadfast_a unto_o the_o end_n not_o the_o ministry_n for_o the_o edfy_n of_o the_o body_n of_o christ_n till_o we_o all_o come_v in_o the_o unity_n of_o the_o faith_n and_o of_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o son_n of_o god_n unto_o a_o christian_a act_n a_o proper_a christian_a act_n a_o right_a christian_a act_n it_o be_v that_o which_o do_v distinguish_v a_o true_a christian_a from_o a_o hypocrite_n and_o a_o counterfeit_n you_o know_v it_o be_v a_o character_n of_o a_o godly_a man_n he_o be_v a_o pray_a man_n there_o go_v up_o two_o man_n into_o the_o temple_n to_o pray_v the_o one_o be_v a_o hypocrite_n the_o other_o a_o publican_n now_o what_o be_v there_o then_o in_o prayer_n that_o do_v distinguish_v these_o two_o man_n why_o say_v job_n will_v the_o hypotrite_n pray_v always_o no_o not_o he_o i_o will_v warrant_v you_o that_o be_v well_o he_o hold_v out_o in_o the_o profession_n of_o god_n and_o of_o his_o worship_n and_o service_n the_o saint_n be_v always_o say_v to_o pray_v but_o as_o for_o the_o hypocrite_n will_v he_o pray_v always_o no_o not_o he_o for_o here_o the_o true_a child_n of_o god_n they_o will_v hold_v fast_o but_o hypocrite_n and_o formalist_n they_o will_v let_v go_v now_o mark_v here_o the_o apostle_n make_v this_o distinction_n heb._n 10._o and_o the_o last_o verse_n but_o we_o be_v not_o of_o they_o who_o draw_v back_o to_o perdition_n but_o of_o they_o that_o believe_v to_o the_o save_n of_o their_o soul_n that_o be_v of_o they_o that_o believe_v to_o 〈◊〉_d end_n for_o the_o end_n of_o our_o faith_n be_v the_o salvation_n of_o 〈◊〉_d soul_n now_o pray_v you_o mark_v by_o the_o way_n what_o you_o draw_v back_o to_o when_o you_o draw_v back_o you_o draw_v back_o to_o perdition_n they_o that_o go_v backward_o go_v to_o hell_n now_o say_v he_o we_o be_v not_o of_o they_o that_o draw_v back_o to_o perdition_n but_o of_o they_o that_o believe_v to_o the_o save_n of_o their_o soul_n that_o be_v of_o those_o that_o believe_v to_o the_o end_n and_o this_o be_v the_o difference_n he_o make_v between_o they_o that_o be_v the_o people_n of_o god_n and_o they_o that_o be_v not_o that_o the_o end_n hold_v fast_o the_o other_o let_v we_o go_v thus_o i_o have_v give_v you_o a_o account_n of_o the_o argument_n that_o be_v couch_v in_o these_o word_n draw_v from_o the_o subject_n the_o object_n and_o the_o act_n with_o its_o qualification_n i_o think_v i_o promise_v you_o a_o few_o help_n with_o which_o i_o shall_v conclude_v take_v they_o in_o these_o three_o or_o four_o particular_n first_o will_v you_o hold_v fast_o i_o can_v but_o believe_v it_o to_o be_v all_o your_o desire_n well_o then_o if_o you_o will_v hold_v fast_o let_v i_o beseech_v this_o of_o you_o take_v heed_n of_o all_o and_o every_o sort_n of_o man_n that_o make_v religion_n be_v the_o mean_n of_o transmit_v the_o purity_n of_o the_o gospel_n to_o we_o their_o posterity_n and_o if_o we_o in_o our_o generation_n hold_v not_o fast_o the_o truth_n of_o god_n but_o carry_v it_o loose_v in_o our_o conscience_n and_o judgement_n and_o we_o let_v it_o fall_v out_o of_o our_o hand_n and_o heart_n we_o forfeit_v the_o truth_n of_o god_n not_o only_o from_o ou●_n self_n but_o also_o from_o our_o posterity_n thus_o you_o see_v we_o shall_v wrong_v the_o god_n of_o truth_n and_o the_o truth_n of_o god_n we_o shall_v wrong_v ourselves_o and_o our_o posterity_n if_o we_o want_n of_o the_o care_n of_o the_o performance_n of_o this_o duty_n which_o have_v appear_v many_o year_n in_o this_o land_n we_o have_v have_v little_a care_n of_o hold_v fast_o the_o truth_n we_o how_o many_o be_v there_o that_o have_v fail_v in_o that_o which_o christ_n call_v 〈◊〉_d forsake_v of_o the_o first_o love_n revelation_n the_o seco●●_n and_o the_o four_o verse_n and_o we_o shall_v hold_v fast_o the_o truth_n in_o the_o profession_n of_o it_o and_o how_o many_o be_v there_o that_o have_v fail_v in_o that_o this_o the_o apostle_n call_v in_o the_o ten_o of_o the_o hebrew_n a_o and_o receive_v hold_v they_o fast_o in_o your_o judgement_n hold_v they_o fast_o in_o your_o will_n and_o affection_n hold_v they_o fast_o in_o your_o life_n and_o conversation_n hold_v the_o truth_n you_o have_v receive_v constant_o and_o hold_v they_o against_o all_o opposition_n on_o the_o right_a hand_n and_o on_o the_o left_a from_o friend_n and_o foe_n to_o press_v this_o upon_o you_o i_o think_v i_o shall_v need_v use_v no_o other_o motive_n than_o what_o i_o have_v lay_v down_o before_o you_o in_o the_o doctrinal_a part_n only_o this_o one_o thing_n more_o and_o that_o be_v take_v notice_n how_o urgent_a the_o spirit_n of_o god_n be_v in_o press_v this_o in_o scripture_n now_o say_v m_n ●_o hildersham_n if_o in_o those_o day_n when_o the_o apostle_n be_v ye●_n live_v who_o teach_v th●_n people_n of_o god_n with_o more_o power_n and_o demonstration_n of_o the_o spirit_n than_o any_o of_o we_o do_v or_o can_v yet_o if_o then_o they_o have_v need_n of_o such_o exhortation_n to_o continue_v in_o the_o doctrine_n and_o to_o abide_v in_o it_o to_o stand_v fast_o and_o hold_v fast_o the_o word_n and_o truth_n of_o god_n how_o much_o more_o needful_a be_v these_o exhortation_n in_o our_o day_n if_o any_o say_v no_o there_o be_v not_o more_o cause_n for_o then_o the_o magistrate_n be_v a_o mortal_a enemy_n to_o the_o gospel_n and_o the_o professor_n of_o it_o but_o we_o be_v thanks_o be_v to_o god_n under_o a_o christian_a magistrate_n who_o do_v not_o oppose_v but_o countenance_n the_o gospel_n and_o the_o profeffor_n of_o it_o if_o any_o make_v this_o objection_n i_o will_v give_v you_o mr._n hildersham_n answer_n to_o it_o which_o i_o find_v in_o a_o sermon_n of_o he_o print_v in_o the_o year_n one_o thousand_o six_o hundred_o thirty_o and_o one_o which_o be_v now_o one_o and_o thirty_o year_n ago_o say_v he_o though_o through_o the_o great_a mercy_n of_o god_n we_o in_o this_o land_n enjoy_v the_o gospel_n in_o great_a peace_n and_o have_v it_o countenance_v by_o authority_n and_o though_o through_o the_o religious_a disposition_n of_o the_o king_n we_o may_v have_v great_a hope_n of_o the_o continuance_n of_o the_o true_a religion_n and_o seem_v to_o be_v free_v from_o all_o fear_n of_o the_o alter_n of_o it_o yet_o say_v he_o there_o be_v need_n of_o this_o exhortation_n even_o in_o these_o day_n and_o that_o for_o these_o reason_n reas._n i._n first_o because_o of_o the_o great_a danger_n we_o be_v in_o of_o be_v overrun_v or_o overspread_v with_o popery_n and_o the_o fiery_a trial_n before_o we_o be_v aware_a for_o say_v he_o the_o great_a increase_n of_o papist_n that_o we_o daily_o hear_v of_o and_o the_o great_a decline_a of_o many_o who_o be_v ready_a to_o receive_v any_o error_n that_o shall_v be_v offer_v to_o they_o these_o thing_n give_v we_o just_a cause_n to_o fear_v the_o danger_n of_o popery_n overspreading_a we_o and_o brethren_n if_o it_o be_v so_o in_o his_o time_n so_o many_o year_n ago_o what_o be_v it_o now_o reas._n ii_o second_o say_v he_o if_o he_o there_o be_v no_o danger_n o●_n popery_n yet_o say_v he_o there_o be_v so_o many_o error_n new_o spring_v up_o that_o do_v show_v how_o needful_a this_o exhortation_n be_v reas._n iii_o three_o say_v he_o there_o be_v such_o a_o general_a decay_n of_o the_o love_n of_o religion_n in_o all_o place_n and_o among_o all_o sort_n of_o people_n and_o so_o much_o irreligiousness_n every_o where_o that_o it_o be_v the_o general_a disease_n of_o the_o nation_n therefore_o he_o conclude_v that_o in_o these_o time_n of_o we_o though_o religion_n have_v the_o magistrate_n to_o countenance_v it_o yet_o there_o be_v as_o much_o need_n of_o press_v this_o exhortation_n as_o ever_o there_o be_v namely_o to_o hold_v fast_o the_o truth_n that_o we_o have_v hear_v and_o receive_v now_o if_o you_o ask_v what_o you_o shall_v do_v that_o you_o may_v be_v able_a to_o hold_v fast_o the_o truth_n that_o you_o have_v receive_v i_o will_v give_v you_o some_o direction_n first_o if_o you_o will_v hold_v fast_o the_o truth_n that_o you_o have_v hear_v and_o receive_v get_v into_o christ_n root_v and_o establish_v in_o he_o brethren_n it_o be_v not_o all_o the_o learning_n in_o the_o world_n and_o ability_n that_o man_n can_v have_v that_o will_v enable_v he_o to_o hold_v out_o and_o hold_v fast_o the_o truth_n that_o he_o have_v receive_v if_o a_o time_n of_o trial_n come_v unless_o christ_n be_v his_o bottom_n and_o foundation_n unless_o christ_n be_v his_o strength_n if_o a_o man_n stand_v upon_o his_o own_o leg_n his_o own_o part_n and_o ability_n to_o argue_v and_o dispute_v and_o repel_v objection_n alas_o these_o thing_n will_v fall_v in_o a_o day_n of_o trial_n prison_n and_o death_n and_o a_o stake_n be_v such_o argument_n brethren_n that_o all_o the_o learning_n and_o part_n in_o the_o world_n can_v answer_v but_o only_o christ_n and_o his_o spirit_n and_o grace_n in_o the_o heart_n therefore_o if_o you_o will_v hold_v fast_o the_o truth_n which_o you_o have_v receive_v and_o hear_v and_o not_o be_v beat_v off_o from_o they_o in_o the_o day_n of_o trial_n get_v into_o christ_n root_v and_o establish_v in_o he_o then_o shall_v you_o stand_v not_o else_o 2._o if_o you_o will_v hold_v fast_o the_o truth_n that_o you_o have_v hear_v and_o receive_v then_o take_v nothing_o upon_o trust_n in_o matter_n of_o religion_n what_o ever_o preacher_n you_o hear_v or_o what_o ever_o book_n you_o read_v take_v not_o thing_n upon_o trust_n but_o examine_v they_o and_o prove_v

text_n you_o have_v this_o great_a conclusion_n the_o special_a and_o distinct_a providence_n of_o god_n extend_v to_o the_o small_a thing_n and_o creature_n and_o in_o a_o special_a manner_n to_o the_o small_a concernment_n of_o believer_n be_v a_o great_a argument_n to_o remove_v their_o fear_n and_o inordinate_a care_n and_o to_o quiet_a and_o confirm_v their_o soul_n in_o confidence_n upon_o god_n the_o very_a hair_n of_o etc._n etc._n be_v it_o so_o then_o 1._o we_o have_v no_o reason_n to_o repine_v at_o wicked_a man_n when_o they_o prosper_v let_v they_o ruffle_v puff_n throw_v and_o swear_v what_o then_o they_o will_v cut_v off_o the_o head_n no_o they_o can_v touch_v a_o hair_n 2._o be_v not_o overmuch_o trouble_v with_o any_o particulat_v change_n or_o passage_n in_o the_o world_n they_o be_v all_o manage_v by_o a_o particular_a and_o distinct_a providence_n 3._o fear_v not_o man_n slavish_o this_o use_n our_o saviour_n make_v of_o it_o 4._o this_o rebuke_n our_o inordinate_a and_o distract_n care_v thou_o be_v mighty_a inquisitive_a what_o shall_v i_o eat_v what_o shall_v i_o drink_v wherewithal_o shall_v i_o be_v clothe_v friend_n thy_o hair_n be_v number_v content_v thyself_o god_n will_v take_v care_n etc._n etc._n 5._o in_o all_o passage_n of_o the_o world_n observe_v and_o acknowledge_v not_o only_o a_o general_n but_o be_v sure_a to_o observe_v a_o come_v unto_o thou_o that_o shall_v in_o the_o least_o damnify_v or_o injure_v thou_o 3._o that_o all_o the_o plot_n design_n contrivance_n attempt_n of_o the_o devil_n and_o all_o his_o party_n against_o god_n church_n be_v all_o under_o a_o providence_n they_o be_v all_o number_v all_o the_o hour_n of_o thy_o suffering_n all_o thy_o tear_n fear_n grief_n pain_n want_n every_o one_o number_v our_o hair_n number_v this_o be_v sad_a news_n for_o unbeliever_n be_v your_o hair_n number_v then_o certain_o your_o oath_n curse_n contempt_n of_o god_n people_n all_o your_o sinful_a thought_n word_n action_n wilful_a omission_n of_o command_v duty_n commission_n of_o forbid_a sin_n all_o your_o dispute_n against_o god_n his_o people_n his_o word_n way_n will_n be_v all_o upon_o the_o file_n they_o be_v all_o number_v 7._o what_o a_o encouragement_n be_v there_o here_o for_o poor_a sinner_n to_o come_v in_o to_o god_n do_v but_o come_v in_o to_o god_n and_o thou_o shall_v come_v shall_v turn_v his_o back_n on_o thou_o a_o thousand_o to_o one_o but_o affliction_n come_v and_o if_o affliction_n come_v thy_o heart_n be_v go_v thou_o have_v no_o spiritual_a strength_n in_o
