imperfect_a for_o want_v of_o true_a sincerity_n and_o zeal_n which_o never_o be_v find_v since_o the_o fall_n of_o adam_n in_o any_o of_o the_o child_n of_o man_n that_o if_o god_n shall_v deal_v in_o his_o justice_n only_o and_o not_o in_o the_o depth_n of_o his_o mercy_n withal_o not_o one_o of_o those_o work_n can_v ever_o be_v accept_v of_o he_o hence_o be_v it_o that_o the_o child_n of_o god_n acknowledge_v their_o uncleanness_n in_o all_o their_o way_n not_o only_o in_o such_o thing_n as_o common_o go_v under_o the_o name_n of_o sin_n but_o in_o all_o their_o holiness_n and_o righteousness_n beside_o too_o high_a a_o point_n for_o the_o child_n of_o the_o world_n to_o attain_v unto_o in_o christ_n we_o find_v most_o absolute_a righteousness_n perfect_o wrought_v insomuch_o that_o there_o be_v never_o find_v any_o ill_a in_o he_o either_o proceed_n forth_o by_o his_o deed_n or_o word_n or_o at_o any_o time_n lurk_v in_o his_o secret_a thought_n and_o whatsoever_o he_o do_v or_o say_v be_v ever_o most_o godly_a whereunto_o the_o inward_a disposition_n of_o his_o hart_n and_o all_o his_o thought_n do_v ever_o accord_n and_o so_o must_v it_o need_v be_v for_o that_o he_o be_v both_o god_n and_o man_n for_o so_o come_v it_o to_o pass_v that_o the_o infinite_a excellency_n of_o his_o godhead_n can_v not_o have_v sufficient_a issue_n in_o his_o manhood_n to_o show_v forth_o themselves_o to_o the_o full_a but_o after_o they_o have_v thorough_o fill_v all_o his_o manhood_n with_o all_o perfection_n and_o all_o the_o organ_n and_o power_n thereof_o needs_o must_v there_o be_v immeasurable_a abundance_n leave_v beside_o all_o which_o do_v witness_n his_o manhood_n first_o to_o be_v thorough_o fill_v so_o not_o only_o it_o may_v be_v but_o also_o of_o necessity_n it_o must_v be_v and_o can_v be_v no_o other_o but_o that_o he_o love_v god_n with_o all_o his_o hart_n with_o all_o his_o soul_n &_o with_o all_o his_o strength_n and_o his_o neighbour_n as_o himself_o that_o all_o his_o deed_n word_n and_o thought_n be_v ever_o good_a and_o the_o same_o in_o most_o absolute_a manner_n to_o the_o uttermost_a pitch_n that_o the_o capacity_n of_o manhood_n be_v able_a to_o bear_v how_o to_o procure_v righteousness_n to_o ourselves_o to_o make_v it_o we_o be_v now_o to_o be_v see_v where_o first_o if_o we_o come_v to_o that_o righteousness_n that_o be_v of_o man_n either_o of_o ourselves_o or_o other_o we_o shall_v never_o be_v able_a to_o do_v any_o good_a for_o first_o as_o touch_v ourselves_o whereas_o we_o be_v not_o able_a to_o fulfil_v the_o law_n there_o be_v not_o in_o we_o any_o righteousness_n at_o all_o to_o be_v have_v if_o we_o can_v fulfil_v the_o whole_a law_n never_o offend_v in_o deed_n word_n nor_o thought_n but_o ever_o have_v all_o our_o deed_n word_n and_o thought_n full_o answer_v to_o that_o holiness_n and_o righteousness_n that_o god_n require_v then_o may_v we_o stand_v in_o the_o favour_n of_o god_n by_o our_o own_o good_a work_n without_o any_o help_n at_o all_o by_o christ_n and_o that_o by_o the_o virtue_n of_o the_o former_a covenant_n common_o call_v the_o old_a testament_n but_o if_o we_o miss_v any_o point_n of_o this_o though_o we_o do_v our_o best_a indevor_n yet_o be_v we_o nothing_o holpen_v thereby_o in_o this_o matter_n because_o that_o god_n have_v not_o covenant_v to_o accept_v we_o as_o righteous_a for_o do_v our_o indevor_n therein_o but_o only_o by_o fulfil_v the_o whole_a law_n in_o every_o point_n to_o the_o uttermost_a jot_n neither_o can_v he_o in_o his_o justice_n accept_v of_o any_o other_o righteousness_n but_o that_o which_o be_v perfect_a no_o more_o than_o the_o law_n will_v adjudge_v any_o sum_n a_o just_a payment_n be_v it_o never_o so_o much_o though_o infinite_a thousand_o so_o long_o as_o there_o want_v any_o one_o penny_n of_o that_o which_o be_v covenant_n then_o if_o we_o seek_v unto_o other_o those_o that_o now_o be_v saint_n in_o heaven_n to_o have_v the_o help_n of_o their_o righteousness_n to_o make_v we_o righteous_a neither_o have_v they_o any_o such_o as_o the_o law_n require_v but_o be_v for_o that_o matter_n as_o short_a as_o we_o neither_o do_v god_n at_o any_o time_n make_v any_o such_o covenant_n with_o any_o of_o we_o that_o their_o righteousness_n shall_v stand_v we_o in_o any_o such_o steed_n now_o therefore_o to_o come_v unto_o christ_n in_o he_o only_o be_v that_o righteousness_n to_o be_v have_v that_o can_v serve_v our_o turn_n and_o we_o have_v it_o in_o he_o by_o none_o other_o mean_v but_o only_o by_o faith_n for_o whereas_o god_n have_v make_v his_o other_o covenant_n in_o he_o which_o he_o call_v the_o new_a and_o the_o last_o because_o he_o never_o mean_v to_o make_v any_o mo_z beside_o that_o whereas_o we_o can_v be_v justify_v before_o he_o by_o any_o righteousness_n of_o our_o own_o unless_o we_o be_v able_a to_o fulfil_v the_o law_n and_o he_o therefore_o have_v take_v this_o order_n that_o his_o son_n shall_v do_v it_o for_o we_o to_o the_o end_n that_o all_o that_o take_v hold_v thereof_o or_o rest_n upon_o he_o shall_v have_v his_o holiness_n and_o righteousness_n they_o hence_o come_v it_o both_o that_o such_o as_o rest_v in_o he_o by_o the_o virtue_n of_o his_o latter_a covenant_n have_v his_o righteousness_n they_o and_o that_o they_o be_v not_o other_o way_n justify_v but_o only_o by_o take_v hold_n on_o he_o by_o faith_n for_o neither_o have_v god_n make_v this_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n so_o common_a to_o all_o that_o unbeliever_n may_v have_v the_o benefit_n of_o it_o as_o well_o as_o the_o faithful_a neither_o have_v he_o by_o this_o latter_a covenant_n declare_v himself_o to_o be_v of_o purpose_n to_o justify_v we_o by_o the_o good_a work_n or_o merit_n of_o any_o but_o only_o of_o christ._n in_o other_o thing_n without_o all_o quaestion_n there_o be_v a_o special_a use_n of_o our_o own_o good_a work_n &_o of_o the_o good_a example_n that_o the_o bless_a saint_n have_v give_v we_o but_o in_o this_o our_o justification_n with_o god_n there_o be_v no_o use_n of_o they_o at_o al._n answer_v now_o therefore_o concern_v the_o place_n of_o saint_n james_n that_o seem_v to_o attribute_v our_o justification_n partly_o to_o our_o own_o work_n and_o not_o only_o to_o faith_n in_o christ_n it_o be_v evident_a that_o he_o do_v not_o treat_v of_o this_o our_o first_o justification_n but_o only_o exhort_v to_o holiness_n of_o life_n and_o so_o consequent_o whatsoever_o he_o say_v there_o it_o be_v not_o to_o be_v hereunto_o apply_v whereas_o therefore_o the_o apostle_n saint_n paul_n conclude_v his_o disputation_n of_o that_o matter_n that_o we_o be_v justify_v by_o faith_n without_o the_o deed_n of_o the_o law_n and_o saint_n james_n in_o like_a manner_n conclude_v he_o that_o of_o work_n a_o man_n be_v justify_v and_o not_o of_o faith_n only_o although_o it_o may_v seem_v at_o the_o first_o sight_n that_o these_o two_o be_v direct_o contrary_a one_o to_o the_o other_o yet_o the_o circumstance_n of_o the_o place_n and_o the_o intent_n and_o meaning_n of_o either_o of_o the_o apostle_n be_v consider_v it_o be_v find_v very_o plain_o that_o they_o be_v not_o contrary_a but_o only_o divers_a that_o be_v one_o of_o they_o do_v not_o deny_v that_o which_o be_v affirm_v by_o the_o other_o both_o speak_v of_o one_o thing_n but_o have_v two_o several_a or_o divers_a matter_n in_o hand_n each_o of_o they_o hold_v on_o his_o own_o several_a way_n for_o saint_n paul_n be_v in_o hand_n with_o a_o point_n of_o doctrine_n to_o show_v wherein_o our_o first_o justification_n consist_v before_o god_n and_o saint_n james_n be_v in_o hand_n with_o a_o point_n of_o exhortation_n to_o godliness_n of_o life_n and_o to_o that_o end_n show_v that_o our_o faith_n be_v but_o vain_a unless_o that_o it_o be_v in_o some_o good_a measure_n fruitful_a by_o work_n whereas_o therefore_o although_o they_o both_o speak_v of_o faith_n and_o justification_n yet_o the_o one_o do_v not_o mean_a either_o that_o faith_n or_o that_o justification_n that_o the_o other_o mean_v hence_o may_v it_o sufficient_o appear_v without_o any_o further_a discourse_n of_o the_o matter_n that_o the_o one_o of_o they_o be_v not_o against_o the_o other_o if_o saint_n james_n have_v be_v of_o purpose_n to_o have_v show_v how_o we_o be_v justify_v before_o god_n he_o will_v have_v show_v no_o other_o way_n but_o only_o by_o faith_n in_o christ_n jesus_n as_o in_o the_o chapter_n before_o he_o ascribe_v the_o estate_n that_o we_o have_v in_o christ_n not_o unto_o
work_n but_o to_o the_o free_a mercy_n of_o god_n so_o on_o the_o other_o side_n if_o saint_n paul_n have_v purpose_v to_o exhort_v to_o newness_n of_o life_n he_o will_v there_o have_v tell_v we_o as_o elsewhere_o he_o do_v that_o though_o we_o have_v all_o faith_n and_o have_v not_o love_n yet_o all_o be_v nothing_o so_o for_o the_o doctrine_n of_o justification_n likewise_o i_o trust_v there_o be_v no_o such_o absurdity_n hold_v by_o we_o that_o any_o may_v have_v any_o just_a cause_n to_o fear_v to_o join_v with_o we_o therein_o 9_o those_o thing_n that_o hinder_v hinder_v be_v some_o of_o they_o of_o less_o importance_n and_o light_o hinder_v not_o but_o those_o that_o be_v of_o the_o weak_a sort_n and_o one_o other_o there_o be_v of_o more_o special_a force_n with_o they_o that_o i_o take_v to_o be_v the_o great_a stay_n that_o hinder_v those_o that_o take_v it_o to_o be_v a_o matter_n of_o conscience_n indeed_o those_o lesser_a hindrance_n likewise_o be_v divers_a for_o some_o respect_n their_o person_n especial_o and_o one_o other_o there_o be_v that_o somewhat_o respect_v the_o cause_n likewise_o those_o that_o do_v most_o proper_o respect_v their_o person_n be_v especial_o two_o one_o that_o proceed_v from_o regard_n of_o their_o credit_n which_o be_v somewhat_o touch_v before_o as_o one_o of_o the_o inconvenience_n that_o hereby_o they_o shall_v have_v the_o other_o that_o concern_v certain_a hardness_n that_o by_o bodily_a punishment_n they_o suppose_v themselves_o to_o be_v put_v unto_o profess_v untouched_a as_o yet_o and_o the_o discredit_n that_o they_o doubt_n will_v fall_v upon_o they_o be_v partly_o with_o all_o general_o but_o especial_o with_o those_o with_o who_o they_o have_v so_o long_o hold_v together_o for_o with_o all_o general_o it_o be_v like_a to_o be_v some_o disgrace_n unto_o they_o for_o that_o they_o have_v all_o so_o profess_v and_o some_o of_o they_o beside_o have_v according_o teach_v but_o yet_o no_o such_o as_o of_o right_n may_v hold_v they_o still_o in_o the_o course_n that_o now_o they_o be_v in_o for_o as_o touch_v their_o profession_n it_o be_v very_o incident_a to_o the_o nature_n of_o man_n to_o be_v deceive_v especial_o in_o the_o truth_n of_o religion_n howsoever_o we_o have_v a_o reasonable_a good_a sight_n in_o other_o thing_n yet_o in_o this_o the_o best_a of_o we_o all_o be_v far_o to_o seek_v for_o any_o thing_n that_o we_o have_v in_o ourselves_o to_o help_v we_o withal_o neither_o be_v we_o only_o to_o seek_v herein_o but_o also_o prone_a to_o conceive_v best_a like_v of_o that_o which_o be_v wrong_a but_o beside_o their_o own_o natural_a weakness_n and_o inclination_n they_o may_v well_o remember_v that_o the_o former_a day_n be_v such_o and_o their_o own_o very_a pardonable_a matter_n in_o religion_n to_o have_v hold_v that_o course_n that_o they_o do_v pardonable_a i_o say_v in_o respect_n of_o our_o own_o natural_a impotency_n and_o inclination_n and_o of_o those_o day_n of_o ignorance_n that_o be_v before_o together_o with_o our_o education_n then_o frame_v according_a to_o that_o present_a time_n but_o if_o we_o come_v to_o these_o day_n of_o we_o then_o be_v the_o case_n alter_v much_o for_o now_o it_o have_v please_v the_o goodness_n of_o god_n both_o to_o give_v they_o a_o more_o plentiful_a knowledge_n of_o his_o will_n and_o pleasure_n and_o to_o offer_v unto_o they_o a_o ready_a direction_n by_o his_o holy_a spirit_n that_o so_o they_o may_v both_o see_v and_o walk_v the_o way_n to_o his_o kingdom_n so_o much_o the_o better_o which_o diversity_n of_o time_n and_o grace_n consider_v they_o may_v easy_o resolve_v themselves_o that_o it_o be_v no_o discredit_n unto_o they_o to_o alter_v the_o course_n of_o their_o former_a ignorance_n when_o as_o now_o their_o eye_n be_v open_v they_o have_v find_v a_o better_a in_o the_o night_n it_o be_v no_o shame_n at_o all_o to_o go_v awry_o in_o the_o day_n time_n it_o be_v a_o fowl_n and_o stark_a shame_n indeed_o to_o hold_v on_o that_o course_n and_o not_o to_o break_v it_o off_o with_o speed_n concern_v those_o teach_v that_o beside_o their_o own_o profession_n have_v also_o teach_v the_o same_o unto_o other_o it_o can_v be_v deny_v but_o that_o they_o have_v do_v so_o much_o the_o more_o hurt_n and_o that_o their_o auditory_a and_o disciple_n before_o may_v charge_v they_o with_o great_a alteration_n now_o if_o so_o they_o shall_v alter_v their_o former_a course_n nevertheless_o neither_o be_v their_o former_a do_n to_o be_v deny_v their_o reasonable_a excuse_n with_o all_o those_o that_o be_v indifferent_a neither_o can_v they_o now_o continu_a on_o their_o course_n but_o that_o needs_o they_o must_v therewithal_o impeach_v their_o credit_n much_o before_o in_o which_o respect_n augustine_n have_v leave_v they_o in_o his_o own_o example_n a_o point_n of_o great_a wisdom_n diligent_o retract_v or_o call_v back_o again_o whatsoever_o point_v of_o doctrine_n he_o find_v that_o he_o have_v unadvised_o deliver_v before_o and_o yet_o notwithstanding_o as_o it_o seem_v and_o himself_o in_o the_o praeface_n confess_v think_v no_o shame_n with_o it_o at_o all_o as_o indeed_o it_o be_v a_o very_a good_a testimony_n of_o his_o inward_a sincerity_n and_o so_o consequent_o as_o much_o to_o his_o true_a and_o just_a commendation_n as_o any_o thing_n any_o such_o advantage_n for_o the_o quaestion_n be_v not_o whether_o saint_n augustine_n or_o they_o have_v more_o need_n to_o retract_v some_o of_o their_o opinion_n but_o whether_o it_o be_v meet_v that_o those_o shall_v do_v it_o that_o have_v teach_v unto_o other_o that_o which_o now_o they_o find_v to_o be_v wrong_n and_o though_o it_o be_v yet_o i_o doubt_n much_o whether_o upon_o sufficient_a advisement_n any_o of_o they_o will_v so_o far_o urge_v the_o odds_n betwixt_o they_o either_o his_o youth_n to_o their_o year_n or_o his_o imperfection_n before_o his_o baptism_n to_o 14_o that_o other_o hindrance_n that_o be_v of_o more_o special_a force_n with_o they_o all_o general_o be_v that_o they_o have_v a_o certain_a persuasion_n that_o they_o can_v not_o join_v with_o we_o in_o our_o profession_n but_o that_o so_o they_o shall_v depart_v from_o the_o catholic_a church_n which_o thing_n indeed_o be_v of_o such_o importance_n that_o if_o it_o be_v true_a it_o be_v not_o for_o any_o that_o love_v his_o own_o salvation_n or_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n to_o join_v with_o we_o in_o our_o religion_n for_o there_o be_v but_o one_o church_n as_o also_o there_o be_v but_o one_o faith_n and_o whosoever_o they_o be_v that_o depart_n from_o either_o of_o both_o they_o can_v be_v of_o sound_a religion_n whatsoever_o it_o be_v they_o do_v profess_v therefore_o to_o examine_v this_o matter_n a_o little_a first_o we_o may_v do_v well_o to_o search_v out_o what_o it_o be_v that_o make_v they_o to_o think_v that_o if_o they_o shall_v reform_v their_o profession_n so_o far_o forth_o as_o we_o have_v do_v they_o shall_v then_o depart_v from_o the_o catholic_a church_n and_o so_o consequent_o deprive_v themselves_o of_o aeternal_a life_n then_o how_o the_o same_o opinion_n of_o they_o may_v be_v amend_v concern_v the_o former_a church_n i_o think_v that_o the_o principal_a cause_n of_o this_o their_o persuasion_n be_v for_o that_o they_o do_v not_o right_o if_o the_o building_n that_o be_v set_v thereupon_o be_v awry_o likewise_o church_n the_o former_a of_o they_o be_v that_o in_o the_o estimation_n of_o the_o church_n they_o take_v not_o unto_o they_o a_o right_a trial_n to_o teach_v they_o which_o be_v the_o church_n indeed_o for_o the_o level_v that_o they_o common_o use_v be_v especial_o two_o one_o take_v out_o of_o the_o first_o foundation_n and_o have_v child_n for_o who_o to_o provide_v they_o be_v not_o able_a to_o bestow_v upon_o other_o so_o much_o as_o otherwise_o they_o may_v that_o need_v to_o be_v no_o grief_n unto_o they_o let_v careful_a to_o be_v gild_v over_o with_o gold_n why_o shall_v wretched_a and_o sinful_a man_n be_v so_o desirous_a never_o to_o let_v down_o his_o own_o estimation_n so_o god_n be_v glorify_v let_v we_o not_o care_n what_o become_v of_o we_o when_o as_o all_o glory_n belong_v to_o he_o there_o be_v none_o at_o all_o belong_v to_o we_o as_o a_o ornament_n that_o be_v for_o a_o noble_a personage_n will_v not_o become_v a_o mean_a person_n so_o glory_n likewise_o that_o be_v only_o for_o god_n can_v never_o become_v the_o child_n of_o man_n but_o if_o need_v they_o will_v be_v in_o some_o estimation_n can_v they_o have_v great_a than_o by_o acknowledge_v their_o former_a wander_n so_o much_o as_o need_v to_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n &_o to_o the_o help_v up_o of_o other_o again_o who_o by_o they_o be_v occasion_v to_o stumble_v before_o so_o notwithstanding_o these_o inconvenience_n which_o it_o seem_v they_o shall_v fall_v into_o yet_o the_o matter_n be_v better_o examine_v it_o will_v soon_o appear_v that_o there_o be_v no_o such_o inconvenience_n in_o the_o matter_n as_o at_o the_o first_o may_v be_v fear_v to_o be_v nevertheless_o whether_o they_o be_v inconvenience_n or_o to_o do_v towards_o the_o justifieng_v of_o any_o and_o then_o as_o touch_v the_o obtain_n of_o true_a righteousness_n to_o we_o both_o where_o we_o may_v find_v it_o &_o by_o what_o mean_v it_o may_v be_v we_o the_o work_n therefore_o that_o may_v be_v available_a to_o justify_v any_o in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n must_v needs_o be_v such_o as_o be_v in_o themselves_o a_o full_a perfect_a and_o absolute_a righteousness_n for_o that_o otherwise_o they_o can_v stand_v in_o the_o justice_n of_o god_n and_o absolute_a righteousness_n can_v never_o be_v but_o where_o every_o deed_n word_n and_o thought_n be_v very_o good_a and_o that_o in_o so_o high_a degree_n as_o be_v require_v nor_o so_o neither_o unless_o there_o be_v a_o continual_a tract_n of_o work_n word_n and_o thought_n all_o our_o whole_a life_n without_o intermission_n other_o righteousness_n though_o we_o have_v never_o so_o good_a yet_o if_o it_o lak_a any_o one_o jot_n of_o this_o it_o will_v not_o serve_v we_o to_o this_o purpose_n for_o the_o law_n require_v both_o that_o such_o thing_n shall_v be_v do_v with_o all_o the_o hart_n with_o all_o the_o soul_n &_o with_o all_o our_o strength_n and_o that_o they_o never_o depart_v out_o of_o our_o heart_n all_o the_o day_n of_o our_o life_n and_o that_o solemn_a diffinitive_a sentence_n of_o the_o law_n comprise_v both_o very_o brief_o when_o it_o say_v that_o every_o one_o be_v accuse_v that_o continue_v not_o in_o all_o thing_n that_o be_v write_v in_o the_o book_n of_o the_o law_n to_o do_v they_o if_o now_o we_o will_v know_v where_o to_o find_v this_o absolute_a righteousness_n the_o truth_n be_v that_o sometime_o it_o seem_v that_o it_o may_v be_v find_v among_o man_n and_o yet_o be_v no_o where_o to_o be_v find_v indeed_o to_o our_o use_n but_o special_a commendation_n for_o these_o matter_n howbeit_o the_o law_n do_v not_o require_v such_o thing_n at_o our_o hand_n as_o though_o that_o now_o we_o be_v able_a to_o do_v they_o but_o to_o
