of_o god_n through_o christ_n our_o lord_n purchase_v for_o we_o by_o his_o death_n and_o to_o take_v it_o proper_o it_o be_v not_o that_o which_o be_v contain_v in_o book_n and_o comprehend_v in_o letter_n but_o rather_o the_o vocal_a preach_n and_o the_o lively_a word_n and_o voice_n which_o sound_v in_o the_o whole_a world_n and_o be_v so_o open_o utter_v that_o it_o may_v every_o where_n be_v hear_v neither_o be_v it_o a_o book_n that_o contain_v the_o law_n wherein_o be_v many_o point_n of_o good_a doctrine_n as_o it_o have_v be_v hitherto_o common_o believe_v for_o it_o draw_v we_o from_o all_o confidence_n and_o hope_n of_o any_o work_n of_o our_o own_o whereby_o to_o become_v righteous_a and_o declare_v unto_o we_o the_o scotfree_a grace_n of_o god_n free_o and_o without_o any_o our_o own_o merit_n give_v unto_o we_o teach_v we_o also_o christ_n who_o have_v by_o his_o intercession_n appease_v y_o e_o wrath_n of_o god_n and_o satisfy_v for_o our_o sin_n have_v quite_o as_o there_o be_v one_o only_a faith_n and_o one_o baptism_n in_o the_o whole_a church_n of_o christ_n thou_o read_v then_o nothing_o write_v by_o any_o of_o the_o apostle_n which_o be_v not_o also_o contain_v in_o the_o writynge_n of_o other_o that_o be_v as_o it_o be_v penner_n of_o the_o scripture_n but_o they_o that_o have_v handle_v this_o point_n especial_o and_o with_o great_a endeavour_n and_o study_n then_o the_o rest_n namely_o that_o only_a faith_n in_o christ_n do_v justify_v even_o they_o be_v the_o best_a evangelist_n of_o all_o hereupon_o thou_o may_v more_o right_o call_v the_o epistle_n of_o paul_n the_o gospel_n than_o those_o thing_n which_o matthew_n mark_v and_o luke_n have_v write_v for_o they_o describe_v not_o much_o beside_o the_o history_n concern_v the_o do_n and_o miracle_n of_o christ_n as_o for_o the_o grace_n which_o christ_n have_v purchase_v for_o we_o none_o do_v more_o full_o and_o fit_o entreat_v thereof_o then_o s._n paul_n especial_o in_o his_o epistle_n to_o the_o roman_n now_o see_v the_o word_n be_v of_o more_o importance_n than_o the_o action_n and_o do_n of_o christ_n and_o that_o if_o we_o shall_v want_v the_o one_o of_o they_o as_o saint_n paul_n testify_v this_o word_n holy_a signify_v that_o which_o be_v only_o proper_a unto_o god_n himself_o and_o to_o he_o only_o do_v it_o appertain_v the_o which_o we_o common_o do_v call_v consecrate_v and_o therefore_o do_v saint_n peter_n now_o say_v you_o have_v consecrate_v yourselves_o unto_o god_n and_o therefore_o it_o stand_v you_o upon_o so_o to_o look_v to_o it_o that_o you_o suffer_v not_o yourselves_o to_o be_v carry_v away_o again_o into_o the_o vain_a lust_n and_o desire_n of_o this_o world_n but_o give_v you_o place_n unto_o god_n that_o he_o may_v reign_v live_v and_o work_v in_o you_o and_o so_o shall_v you_o be_v holy_a even_o as_o he_o be_v holy_a thus_o have_v he_o hitherto_o describe_v the_o grace_n that_o be_v offer_v unto_o we_o by_o the_o gospel_n and_o preach_v of_o christ_n and_o have_v teach_v we_o how_o again_o we_o ought_v to_o behave_v ourselves_o towards_o the_o same_o namely_o to_o persist_v and_o continue_v in_o a_o pure_a and_o sincere_a persuasion_n of_o faith_n be_v well_o assure_v that_o no_o work_n whatsoever_o that_o we_o either_o can_v do_v or_o devise_v can_v any_o thing_n avail_v we_o towards_o our_o salvation_n but_o where_o this_o doctrine_n be_v preach_v then_o straightway_o reason_n come_v in_o and_o infer_v thus_o if_o the_o case_n so_o stand_v what_o need_n have_v i_o to_o do_v any_o good_a work_n then_o do_v these_o grossehead_n enter_v into_o this_o fond_a opinion_n or_o rather_o mere_a madness_n make_v of_o a_o right_a christian_a life_n a_o carnal_a licentiousness_n deem_v it_o lawful_a for_o every_o man_n to_o do_v what_o he_o list_v with_o such_o manner_n of_o person_n do_v saint_n peter_n here_o in_o this_o place_n meet_v withal_o and_o by_o prevention_n take_v aforehande_v from_o they_o that_o their_o foolish_a imagination_n teach_v we_o that_o christian_a liberty_n without_o depend_v upon_o any_o good_a work_n be_v to_o be_v use_v towards_o god_n because_o on_o he_o we_o be_v only_o to_o build_v our_o faith_n without_o any_o work_n for_o hereby_o we_o attribute_v unto_o he_o his_o due_a due_a honour_n and_o acknowledge_v he_o for_o our_o good_a god_n who_o be_v both_o just_a true_a and_o merciful_a such_o a_o faith_n as_o this_o deliver_v and_o offer_v we_o from_o our_o sin_n and_o all_o other_o mischéeve_n whatsoever_o now_o after_o that_o we_o have_v attribute_v this_o unto_o god_n all_o the_o residue_n of_o our_o life_n that_o we_o have_v to_o live_v we_o be_v to_o bestow_v to_o the_o benefit_n of_o our_o neighbour_n to_o serve_v and_o do_v good_a unto_o he_o the_o very_o chief_a &_o principall_a work_n of_o all_o other_o proceed_v and_o issue_v out_o of_o faith_n be_v with_o our_o mouth_n be_v ready_a to_o confess_v christ_n and_o with_o our_o blood_n also_o to_o bear_v witness_n unto_o he_o and_o if_o the_o case_n so_o require_v to_o bestow_v our_o very_a life_n also_o for_o his_o sake_n and_o yet_o have_v not_o god_n any_o need_n of_o this_o or_o any_o such_o work_n of_o we_o but_o therefore_o must_v we_o do_v it_o that_o our_o faith_n be_v thereby_o thorough_o try_v and_o manifest_v may_v also_o draw_v and_o allure_v other_o to_o the_o like_a furthermore_o there_o be_v other_o work_n which_o do_v general_o also_o serve_v to_o this_o end_n that_o we_o may_v thereby_o do_v good_a unto_o our_o neighbour_n all_o which_o notwithstanding_o not_o we_o ourselves_o but_o god_n be_v he_o that_o must_v work_v and_o bring_v the_o same_o to_o pass_v in_o us._n thus_o have_v we_o nothing_o at_o all_o in_o the_o world_n of_o our_o own_o that_o we_o can_v ascribe_v in_o any_o respect_n unto_o ourselves_o hereby_o now_o it_o evident_o appear_v how_o far_o of_o it_o be_v that_o this_o preach_n of_o the_o gospel_n do_v if_o you_o call_v he_o father_n which_o without_o respect_n of_o person_n judge_v according_a to_o every_o man_n work_n pass_v the_o time_n of_o your_o dwell_v here_o in_o fear_n know_v that_o you_o be_v not_o redeem_v with_o corruptible_a thing_n as_o silver_n and_o gold_n from_o your_o vain_a conversation_n receive_v by_o the_o tradition_n of_o the_o father_n but_o with_o the_o precious_a meaning_n of_o saint_n peter_n in_o this_o place_n be_v this_o you_o be_v now_o by_o faith_n come_v to_o this_o point_n that_o you_o be_v the_o son_n of_o god_n and_o he_o your_o father_n you_o have_v attain_v a_o incorruptible_a inheritance_n whereof_o have_v be_v speak_v afore_o now_o therefore_o there_o remain_v nothing_o behind_o but_o that_o the_o veil_n be_v take_v away_o that_o may_v be_v open_o show_v which_o erst_o be_v hide_v this_o must_v you_o yet_o expect_v and_o look_v for_o till_o the_o time_n come_v that_o it_o be_v give_v you_o to_o see_v it_o you_o therefore_o be_v come_v to_o this_o good_a point_n that_o you_o may_v with_o boldness_n and_o trust_n invocate_v and_o call_v upon_o god_n your_o father_n because_o he_o be_v nevertheless_o just_a as_o he_o that_o will_v render_v unto_o every_o one_o without_o respect_n of_o person_n accord_v to_o their_o work_n let_v no_o man_n persuade_v himself_o for_o that_o he_o be_v dignify_v and_o entitle_v with_o this_o worthy_a name_n to_o be_v call_v a_o christian_a or_o the_o son_n of_o god_n that_o therefore_o god_n will_v spare_v he_o if_o he_o live_v without_o his_o fear_n and_o account_n it_o enough_o because_o he_o have_v such_o a_o excellent_a name_n the_o world_n in_o deed_n judge_v accord_v to_o respect_n of_o person_n not_o judge_v all_o person_n equal_o and_o indifferent_o but_o spare_v such_o as_o be_v their_o friend_n wealthy_a scotfree_a fair_a learned_a wise_a mighty_a and_o in_o high_a authority_n but_o god_n respect_v none_o of_o all_o these_o he_o deal_v in_o all_o thing_n with_o indefferencie_n be_v the_o person_n never_o so_o high_a of_o call_v so_o do_v he_o in_o egypt_n slay_v the_o child_n aswell_o of_o the_o king_n as_o of_o the_o poor_a shepherd_n exod._n 10._o and_o therefore_o the_o apostle_n here_o warn_v we_o that_o we_o look_v for_o the_o like_a judgement_n shall_v stand_v in_o fear_n and_o not_o so_o to_o vasit_fw-la our_o title_n because_o we_o be_v call_v christian_n that_o therefore_o we_o shall_v presume_v that_o god_n will_v any_o whitt_n more_o spare_v we_o than_o he_o will_v other_o for_o this_o vain_a persuasion_n long_o ago_o deceive_v the_o jew_n who_o brag_v themselves_o to_o be_v the_o seed_n of_o abraham_n and_o the_o people_n of_o god._n the_o scripture_n make_v no_o difference_n accord_v to_o the_o flesh_n but_o according_a to_o the_o spirit_n very_o true_a it_o be_v that_o god_n promise_v that_o christ_n shall_v be_v bear_v of_o the_o seed_n of_o abraham_n and_o that_o out_o of_o he_o shall_v come_v a_o holy_a people_n but_o it_o follow_v not_o thereupon_o that_o all_o they_o be_v the_o child_n of_o god_n which_o descend_v from_o the_o line_n of_o abraham_n he_o also_o promise_v salvation_n to_o the_o gentile_n but_o he_o say_v not_o that_o he_o will_v save_v all_o the_o gentile_n but_o here_o now_o arise_v a_o question_n when_o we_o say_v that_o god_n do_v save_v we_o only_o by_o faith_n without_o respect_n of_o good_a work_n how_o happen_v it_o that_o saint_n peter_n do_v here_o say_v that_o he_o will_v not_o judge_v accord_v to_o the_o person_n but_o according_a to_o every_o man_n work_n i_o answer_v whatsoever_o we_o have_v teach_v concern_v faith_n how_o that_o it_o alone_o do_v justify_v we_o before_o god_n be_v without_o all_o doubt_n very_o true_a forasmuch_o as_o the_o scripture_n declare_v and_o witness_v the_o same_o more_o plain_o than_o that_o it_o can_v be_v deny_v now_o whereas_o saint_n peter_n do_v here_o say_v that_o god_n judge_v accord_v to_o work_n that_o also_o be_v as_o true_a but_o this_o by_o the_o way_n must_v undoubted_o be_v believe_v that_o where_o faith_n be_v not_o there_o neither_o can_v any_o good_a work_n be_v and_o again_o that_o there_o be_v no_o faith_n where_o there_o be_v no_o good_a work_n therefore_o thou_o must_v bring_v both_o thy_o faith_n and_o thy_o good_a work_v into_o one_o as_o in_o the_o which_o be_v both_o together_o be_v comprehend_v and_o
the_o same_o be_v this_o in_o effect_n which_o saint_n peter_n say_v in_o this_o place_n for_o it_o be_v asmuch_o as_o if_o he_o have_v say_v we_o certain_o look_v for_o eternal_a life_n although_o we_o live_v here_o on_o the_o earth_n yet_o no_o otherwise_o then_o by_o the_o resurrection_n of_o christ_n that_o be_v to_o say_v even_o therefore_o because_o he_o be_v rise_v again_o ascend_v into_o heaven_n and_o sit_v on_o the_o right_a hand_n of_o his_o father_n for_o this_o cause_n do_v he_o ascend_v that_o he_o may_v give_v unto_o we_o his_o spirit_n whereby_o be_v regenerate_v we_o may_v be_v bold_a to_o go_v to_o the_o father_n and_o say_v behold_v i_o come_v before_o thou_o o_o merciful_a father_n and_o pray_v unto_o thou_o not_o that_o i_o put_v any_o trust_n or_o confidence_n in_o faith_n and_o those_o book_n of_o all_o other_o be_v the_o best_a and_o the_o excellent_a which_o teach_v and_o treat_v upon_o this_o point_n principal_o and_o chief_o as_o before_o have_v be_v declare_v this_o article_n of_o our_o faith_n be_v of_o most_o weighty_a importance_n for_o if_o christ_n have_v not_o rise_v again_o all_o our_o comfort_n and_o hope_n be_v in_o vain_a and_o all_o of_o they_o this_o if_o we_o steadfast_o believe_v we_o have_v a_o perfect_a assurance_n and_o full_a possession_n of_o all_o these_o benefit_n which_o be_v each_o way_n impossible_a to_o be_v bring_v to_o pass_v by_o our_o self_n or_o any_o strength_n that_o be_v in_o we_o it_o behove_v that_o christ_n shall_v perform_v the_o same_o otherwise_o there_o have_v be_v no_o cause_n why_o he_o shall_v have_v descend_v from_o heaven_n hither_o among_o we_o vile_a wretched_a and_o sinful_a man_n and_o therefore_o when_o man_n in_o preach_v attribute_n any_o of_o these_o thing_n to_o our_o work_v and_o delight_n if_o he_o believe_v those_o thing_n which_o be_v here_o speak_v for_o when_o worldly_a wealth_n and_o terrene_a treasure_n be_v compare_v to_o these_o thing_n it_o appear_v straight_o how_o those_o thing_n of_o the_o world_n endure_v but_o a_o small_a time_n and_o do_v soon_o pass_v away_o but_o these_o thing_n continue_v for_o ever_o and_o do_v never_o fail_v nor_o fade_v moreover_o all_o the_o thing_n of_o the_o world_n be_v unpure_a and_o do_v defile_v we_o for_o there_o be_v no_o man_n here_o so_o godly_a but_o in_o one_o respect_n or_o other_o he_o be_v carry_v away_o and_o defile_v with_o the_o vanity_n and_o pleasant_a thing_n of_o this_o life_n but_o this_o inheritance_n be_v undefiled_a and_o pure_a and_o he_o that_o possess_v the_o same_o remain_v for_o ever_o immaculate_a final_o this_o inheritance_n do_v not_o fade_v do_v not_o decay_n neither_o be_v ever_o subject_a to_o any_o corruption_n but_o every_o yearthly_a thing_n although_o it_o be_v as_o hard_o as_o iron_n and_o stone_n be_v nevertheless_o change_v and_o continue_v not_o still_o as_o soon_o as_o man_n also_o become_v old_a his_o beauty_n be_v go_v and_o he_o become_v loathsome_a and_o unamiable_a howbeit_o this_o inheritance_n be_v far_o from_o mutation_n or_o change_n it_o always_o remain_v it_o be_v always_o fresh_a and_o flourish_v there_o be_v no_o pleasure_n so_o great_a on_o the_o earth_n which_o will_v not_o by_o continuance_n become_v loathsome_a and_o tedious_a as_o we_o see_v there_o be_v at_o the_o last_o a_o tediousness_n in_o all_o thing_n but_o our_o good_a thing_n here_o speak_v of_o be_v otherwise_o whereof_o there_o be_v not_o satiety_n for_o ever_o all_o which_o we_o obtain_v in_o christ_n through_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n when_o we_o firm_o believe_v that_o they_o be_v free_o give_v unto_o us._n for_o how_o shall_v we_o miserable_a man_n by_o our_o own_o work_n merit_v those_o so_o great_a good_a thing_n which_o no_o reason_n or_o understanding_n of_o man_n be_v able_a so_o much_o as_o to_o comprehend_v or_o by_o imagination_n of_o heart_n once_o to_o conceive_v reserve_v in_o heaven_n for_o you_o this_o inheritance_n immortal_a undefiled_a and_o that_o fade_v not_o away_o be_v undoubted_o we_o it_o be_v only_o for_o a_o little_a while_n remove_v and_o keep_v from_o our_o sight_n until_o these_o eye_n be_v close_v up_o and_o this_o mortal_a life_n end_v then_o shall_v we_o certain_o find_v and_o see_v the_o same_o unless_o we_o be_v unbelieve_v and_o because_o we_o shall_v not_o doubt_n of_o the_o certainty_n thereof_o the_o apostle_n here_o add_v that_o this_o inheritance_n whereunto_o no_o corruption_n can_v cleave_v be_v reserve_v for_o we_o in_o heaven_n which_o be_v keep_v by_o the_o power_n of_o god_n through_o faith_n unto_o salvation_n we_o in_o hope_n say_v the_o apostle_n look_v for_o this_o excellent_a inheritance_n whereunto_o we_o come_v by_o faith_n for_o these_o do_v in_o this_o sort_n follow_v one_o a_o other_o by_o the_o word_n be_v wrought_v in_o we_o faith_n by_o faith_n that_o new_a birth_n and_o by_o this_o new_a birth_n we_o come_v unto_o hope_n so_o that_o we_o certain_o look_v for_o these_o thing_n and_o be_v through_o assure_v thereof_o wherefore_o saint_n peter_n fit_o here_o say_v that_o these_o thing_n must_v be_v do_z by_o faith_n and_o not_o by_o our_o work_n the_o apostle_n here_o express_o say_v you_o be_v by_o the_o power_n of_o god_n keep_v unto_o salvation_n there_o be_v many_o who_o have_v hear_v the_o gospel_n how_o that_o faith_n only_o do_v justify_v without_o work_v do_v by_o and_o by_o burst_v forth_o and_o say_v we_o also_o do_v believe_v think_n that_o that_o bare_a opinion_n which_o they_o feign_v unto_o theim selue_o preach_v and_o teach_v now_o he_o proceed_v and_o hereafter_o exhort_v we_o by_o faith_n to_o embrace_v and_o by_o love_n to_o follow_v such_o preach_n of_o the_o gospel_n sai_v wherefore_o gird_n up_o the_o loin_n of_o your_o mind_n be_v sober_a and_o trust_v perfect_o on_o the_o grace_n that_o be_v bring_v unto_o you_o by_o the_o revelation_n of_o jesus_n christ_n as_o obedient_a child_n reins_n that_o be_v by_o only_a faith_n filthy_a and_o unlawful_a lust_n be_v restrain_v and_o bridle_v but_o the_o spiritual_a gird_v whereof_o the_o apostle_n here_o speak_v be_v after_o this_o sort_n as_o a_o virgin_n be_v in_o body_n chaste_a and_o entire_a so_o the_o mind_n through_o faith_n whereby_o it_o be_v espouse_v to_o christ_n be_v spiritual_o sound_n and_o sincere_a howbeit_o dehort_v when_o he_o bid_v to_o girde_n up_o the_o loin_n of_o the_o mind_n which_o in_o effect_n be_v asmuch_o as_o if_o he_o shall_v say_v you_o have_v now_o hear_v the_o gospel_n &_o attain_v unto_o faith_n see_v then_o that_o you_o persist_v therein_o and_o suffer_v not_o yourselves_o to_o be_v defile_v &_o corrupt_v with_o false_a doctrine_n waver_v in_o uncertentie_n now_o this_o way_n now_o that_o way_n the_o apostle_n saint_n peter_n use_v here_o a_o certain_a peculiar_a and_o proper_a kind_n of_o speech_n not_o such_o as_o saint_n paul_n use_v when_o he_o say_v gird_v up_o the_o loin_n of_o your_o mind_n he_o call_v that_o the_o mind_n which_o we_o otherwise_o call_v the_o thought_n as_o when_o i_o say_v i_o think_v thus_o that_o this_o be_v right_n and_o as_o saint_n paul_n say_v so_o do_v we_o think_v such_o be_v our_o opinion_n so_o it_o seem_v unto_o us._n and_o by_o this_o mean_n do_v the_o apostle_n here_o most_o proper_o signify_v faith_n meaning_n thus_o much_o in_o effect_n you_o have_v now_o attain_v to_o a_o true_a thought_n and_o be_v settle_v in_o a_o right_a persuasion_n that_o we_o be_v justify_v by_o faith_n only_o persist_v strong_o herein_o gird_n it_o fast_o unto_o you_o and_o valiant_o stick_v thereunto_o let_v no_o man_n pull_v these_o sound_n opinion_n out_o of_o your_o heart_n and_o then_o shall_v you_o prosperous_o persener_n and_o stand_v there_o will_v many_o false_a teacher_n arise_v who_o will_v forge_v doctrine_n of_o man_n thereby_o to_o corrupt_v your_o mind_n and_o looze_z this_o girdle_n of_o faith_n wherefore_o in_o heart_n receive_v this_o admonition_n which_o i_o give_v you_o aforehande_v that_o the_o doctrine_n of_o truth_n may_v be_v well_o fix_v in_o your_o mind_n and_o that_o you_o may_v valiant_o persist_v here_o in_o saint_n peter_n he_o have_v scatter_v the_o proud_a in_o the_o imagination_n of_o their_o heart_n that_o be_v he_o have_v overthrow_v and_o bring_v they_o to_o confusion_n in_o the_o devise_n of_o their_o own_o mind_n and_o thought_n be_v sober_a this_o sobriety_n pertain_v outward_o to_o the_o body_n and_o be_v a_o especial_a work_n of_o faith_n for_o although_o man_n be_v justify_v yet_o be_v he_o not_o free_a from_o evil_a desire_n in_o deed_n faith_n have_v begin_v to_o restrain_v and_o bridle_v the_o flesh_n notwithstanding_o the_o same_o do_v continual_o strive_v against_o it_o and_o assault_v it_o with_o sundry_a sort_n of_o desire_n which_o go_v about_o accord_v to_o the_o concupiscence_n thereof_o again_o to_o burst_v forth_o and_o prevail_v wherefore_o to_o give_v a_o general_a precept_n hereof_o unto_o the_o whole_a people_n or_o to_o the_o church_n for_o asmuch_o as_o we_o be_v unlike_a among_o ourselves_o one_o have_v a_o strong_a body_n another_o a_o weak_a so_o that_o it_o be_v needful_a for_o one_o to_o abstain_v much_o for_o a_o other_o to_o abstain_v little_a that_o the_o body_n may_v nevertheless_o remain_v in_o health_n and_o be_v fit_a to_o do_v good_a work_n again_o there_o be_v some_o that_o deal_v clean_o contrary_o and_o think_v they_o do_v very_o well_o in_o fast_v nothing_o at_o all_o suppose_n that_o they_o may_v without_o respect_n of_o time_n eat_v what_o they_o will_n but_o herein_o they_o do_v not_o well_o for_o albeit_o they_o have_v somewhat_o taste_v of_o the_o gospel_n yet_o have_v they_o profit_v little_a or_o nothing_o like_v unto_o the_o former_a for_o they_o have_v profit_v no_o further_o but_o only_o to_o contemn_v the_o law_n of_o the_o pope_n they_o will_v not_o gird_v up_o their_o be_v good_a to_o fast_a howbeit_o the_o right_n fast_v in_o deed_n be_v to_o give_v the_o body_n no_o more_o nourishment_n then_o be_v needful_a to_o preserve_v it_o in_o health_n also_o to_o perfect_o on_o the_o grace_n that_o be_v bring_v unto_o you_o svche_o be_v christian_a faith_n that_o with_o all_o affiance_n it_o whole_o trust_v to_o the_o word_n of_o god_n quiet_o commit_v itself_o unto_o it_o and_o confident_o attempt_v whatsoever_o it_o teach_v whereupon_o s._n peter_n say_v then_o be_v the_o loin_n of_o the_o mind_n gird_v up_o then_o be_v your_o faith_n sincere_a and_o sound_o when_o you_o do_v quiet_o and_o confident_o commit_v yourselves_o to_o the_o worde_n of_o god_n and_o be_v bold_a upon_o trust_n therein_o have_v no_o regard_n whatsoever_o thing_n of_o you_o come_v into_o peril_n whether_o it_o be_v riches_n or_o good_a name_n body_n or_o even_o the_o life_n itself_o excellent_o therefore_o have_v he_o in_o these_o word_n describe_v a_o sincere_a and_o unfeigned_a faith_n for_o faith_n must_v not_o be_v sluggishe_a and_o sleepy_a which_o be_v rather_o a_o dream_n then_o a_o faith_n but_o it_o must_v be_v lively_a and_o effectual_a so_o that_o one_o will_v with_o all_o confidence_n offer_v himself_o to_o all_o affliction_n and_o trouble_n whatsoever_o and_o depend_v whole_o on_o the_o word_n esteem_v indifferent_o whatsoever_o state_n god_n objection_n which_o perchance_o they_o may_v allege_v sai_v if_o faith_n only_o be_v sufficient_a to_o a_o christian_a and_o work_n do_v not_o justify_v why_o then_o and_o for_o what_o purpose_n shall_v we_o need_v to_o be_v subject_a unto_o the_o magistrate_n &_o pay_v tribute_n to_o this_o he_o say_v thus_o much_o although_o we_o shall_v receive_v from_o they_o no_o good_a or_o commodity_n christian_n sai_v that_o if_o they_o shall_v live_v in_o such_o order_n their_o country_n and_o commonweal_n will_v soon_o be_v bring_v to_o ruin_n and_o be_v quick_o overrun_v but_o we_o now_o unto_o these_o thing_n answer_v thus_o it_o be_v true_a that_o christian_n ought_v not_o to_o resist_v evil_a neither_o to_o revenge_v themselves_o but_o rather_o to_o suffer_v violence_n and_o wrong_a which_o also_o be_v a_o cause_n why_o they_o may_v not_o be_v chargeable_a burdenous_a and_o troublesome_a to_o ethnike_v but_o by_o this_o the_o magistrate_n be_v not_o inhibit_v the_o sword_n nor_o judicial_a tryalle_n for_o although_o they_o live_v so_o orderly_o that_o no_o man_n have_v any_o just_a cause_n to_o complain_v upon_o they_o because_o they_o offer_v wrong_v to_o no_o man_n but_o deserve_v well_o of_o all_o man_n and_o patient_o bear_v whatsoever_o be_v do_z to_o they_o by_o other_o yet_o because_o of_o false_a and_o connterfaite_n christian_n and_o they_o that_o know_v not_o christ_n these_o thing_n the_o sword_n and_o judgement_n must_v be_v in_o use_n that_o they_o which_o do_v hurt_v and_o wrong_v to_o other_o may_v be_v punish_v whereby_o public_a tranquillity_n may_v be_v maintain_v and_o the_o godly_a may_v live_v in_o peace_n and_o safety_n god_n therefore_o over_o and_o beside_o his_o word_n have_v institute_v and_o appoint_v this_o profane_a or_o civil_a power_n to_o repress_v they_o which_o of_o their_o own_o accord_n will_v not_o refrain_v from_o do_v and_o offer_a harm_n and_o injury_n to_o other_o it_o plain_o therefore_o appear_v that_o god_n have_v appoint_v and_o institute_v the_o magistrate_n because_o of_o they_o that_o do_v not_o believe_v and_o that_o therefore_o christian_n which_o administer_v that_o function_n not_o only_o may_v but_o also_o aught_o to_o use_v the_o sword_n namely_o thereby_o to_o relieve_v their_o neighbour_n in_o repel_v and_o punish_v malefactor_n and_o in_o defend_v and_o maintain_v the_o peace_n tranquillity_n and_o safety_n of_o they_o that_o be_v good_a and_o virtuous_a and_o yet_o nevertheless_o the_o sai_n of_o christ_n stand_v sure_a of_o not_o resist_v evil_a for_o although_o a_o christian_a man_n bear_v the_o sword_n whether_o he_o be_v a_o prince_n or_o any_o other_o magistrate_n yet_o shall_v he_o never_o use_v it_o for_o himself_o neither_o shall_v he_o therewith_o part_n of_o the_o world_n believe_v not_o neither_o observe_v this_o precepte_v and_o commandment_n therefore_o it_o be_v most_o expedient_a to_o over-rule_v and_o govern_v they_o not_o as_o christian_n for_o such_o they_o be_v not_o but_o as_o ethnike_v and_o panim_n and_o to_o stay_v and_o repress_v their_o sensual_a and_o wilful_a outrage_n for_o otherwise_o if_o they_o shall_v be_v suffer_v to_o run_v headlong_o at_o their_o own_o pleasure_n in_o their_o disorder_a looseness_n and_o lawless_a violence_n no_o man_n shall_v be_v able_a to_o live_v in_o quietness_n and_o safety_n therefore_o there_o be_v two_o sort_n of_o rule_n and_o dominion_n in_o the_o world_n as_o there_o be_v also_o man_n of_o two_o sort_n to_o wit_n christian_n and_o not_o christian_n christian_n be_v govern_v by_o the_o worde_n of_o god_n and_o those_o need_v not_o in_o respect_n of_o themselves_o any_o profane_a magistrate_n but_o they_o that_o be_v not_o christian_n have_v need_n to_o be_v under_o a_o other_o power_n and_o rule_v namely_o the_o sword_n because_o they_o can_v not_o abide_v to_o be_v obedient_a unto_o the_o worde_n of_o god_n but_o if_o we_o be_v all_o christian_n and_o obedient_a to_o the_o gospel_n we_o shall_v not_o have_v any_o need_n at_o all_o of_o the_o sword_n or_o any_o civil_a power_n for_o where_o there_o be_v no_o misseliâ—ers_n and_o malefactor_n what_o use_n can_v there_o be_v of_o punishment_n scythe_n therefore_o it_o can_v not_o be_v that_o we_o shall_v all_o be_v godly_a and_o virtuous_a
and_o retain_v the_o same_o sincere_o and_o sound_o without_o add_v any_o thing_n thereunto_o or_o myngâ—ng_v any_o false_a and_o erroneous_a doctrine_n therewith_o and_o therefore_o s._n peter_n now_o afterward_o address_v himself_o to_o write_v against_o human_a doctrine_n and_o new-fangled_a devise_n of_o man_n idle_a and_o fond_a imagination_n but_o for_o what_o cause_n do_v he_o say_v we_o have_v a_o most_o sure_a word_n of_o the_o prophet_n true_o i_o be_o thus_o full_o persuade_v that_o we_o shall_v never_o hencefoorthe_o have_v any_o such_o prophet_n as_o in_o the_o old_a testament_n the_o jew_n have_v a_o prophet_n proper_o be_v he_o that_o bring_v the_o glad_a tiding_n of_o jesus_n christ_n and_o although_o many_o of_o the_o prophet_n in_o the_o old_a testament_n prophesy_v also_o of_o other_o matter_n to_o come_v yet_o they_o come_v and_o be_v send_v of_o god_n peculiar_o to_o this_o end_n and_o purpose_n to_o preach_v and_o foretell_v of_o christ_n all_o they_o that_o believe_v in_o christ_n be_v prophet_n for_o they_o have_v the_o chief_a head_n of_o that_o thing_n which_o prophet_n ought_v to_o have_v although_o all_o of_o they_o have_v not_o the_o gift_n of_o propheci_v for_o even_o as_o through_o the_o faith_n of_o one_o jesus_n christ_n we_o be_v all_o brother_n king_n and_o priest_n so_o also_o through_o christ_n we_o be_v prophet_n for_o we_o can_v all_o utter_v and_o declare_v those_o thing_n that_o appertain_v to_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n and_o christian_a life_n we_o also_o so_o far_o as_o be_v needful_a and_o expedient_a for_o we_o can_v foretell_v of_o thing_n to_o come_v as_o that_o there_o shall_v be_v a_o day_n of_o general_a judgement_n and_o that_o we_o shall_v all_o rise_v again_o from_o the_o dead_a and_o final_o we_o understande_v the_o whole_a scripture_n this_o witness_v s._n paul_n sai_v you_o may_v all_o prophecy_n one_o by_o one_o i_o cor._n fourteen_o therefore_o say_v s._n peter_n thus_o we_o have_v such_o a_o word_n of_o the_o prophet_n as_o be_v sure_a enough_o of_o itself_o only_a see_v you_o that_o it_o be_v firm_a and_o sure_a to_o you_o and_o you_o do_v well_o if_o you_o take_v heed_n light_n that_o he_o may_v see_v which_o way_n to_o go_v even_o so_o the_o gospel_n be_v as_o a_o candle_n at_o midnight_n and_o in_o the_o dark_a whereas_o all_o human_a reason_n and_o wisdom_n be_v nothing_o but_o mere_a error_n and_o blindness_n the_o world_n be_v nothing_o else_o but_o a_o kingdom_n of_o darkness_n in_o this_o darkness_n god_n lighten_v we_o with_o his_o candle_n to_o wit_n his_o glorious_a gospel_n which_o direct_v our_o step_n aright_o that_o we_o may_v see_v which_o way_n to_o go_v and_o walk_v in_o this_o world_n till_o such_o time_n as_o the_o morning_n appear_v and_o the_o day_n dawn_n this_o place_n do_v also_o main_o oppugn_v and_o beat_v down_o all_o the_o foolish_a trompery_n of_o human_a doctrine_n for_o sing_v that_o the_o word_n of_o god_n be_v the_o candle_n and_o lantern_n that_o give_v light_a in_o dark_a corner_n and_o obscure_a place_n we_o must_v necessary_o thereupon_o conclude_v that_o all_o other_o thing_n be_v mere_a darkness_n for_o if_o there_o have_v be_v any_o other_o light_n beside_o the_o word_n s._n peter_n will_v not_o have_v use_v these_o speech_n never_o consider_v and_o weigh_v therefore_o how_o skilful_a and_o wise_a those_o man_n be_v that_o teach_v any_o other_o doctrine_n beside_o the_o word_n of_o god_n neither_o let_v it_o any_o whit_n move_v thou_o how_o glorious_o and_o galant_o so_o ever_o they_o couch_n their_o smoothed_a reason_n for_o where_o thou_o feel_v and_o see_v the_o worde_n of_o god_n to_o be_v absent_a doubt_v not_o but_o all_o which_o thou_o hear_v be_v mere_a blindness_n and_o erroneous_a darkness_n neither_o let_v it_o any_o thing_n move_v thou_o in_o that_o they_o brag_v and_o say_v that_o they_o have_v the_o holy_a ghost_n for_o how_o can_v they_o have_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n which_o have_v not_o the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o therefore_o they_o do_v nothing_o else_o but_o call_v light_a darkness_n and_o darkness_n light_n as_o it_o be_v say_v esaie_n v._o this_o word_n of_o god_n be_v the_o gospel_n whereby_o we_o be_v through_o christ_n redeem_v from_o sin_n death_n and_o hell_n he_o that_o harken_v and_o give_v ear_n thereunto_o have_v a_o link_n or_o a_o dream_n to_o be_v nothing_o but_o mere_a darkness_n the_o author_n whereof_o have_v not_o the_o light_n neither_o can_v they_o abide_v the_o light_n and_o therefore_o they_o must_v needs_o remain_v in_o darkness_n and_o continue_v in_o blindness_n for_o this_o be_v the_o light_n that_o teach_v we_o what_o we_o ought_v to_o do_v and_o what_o thing_n be_v needful_a and_o necessary_a to_o our_o not_o in_o old_a time_n by_o the_o will_n of_o man_n but_o holy_a man_n of_o god_n speak_v as_o they_o be_v move_v by_o the_o holy_a ghost_n herein_o s._n peter_n begin_v to_o oppugn_v false_a and_o erroneous_a doctrine_n and_o of_o his_o word_n this_o be_v the_o meaning_n forasmuch_o as_o you_o know_v that_o we_o have_v the_o worde_n of_o god_n cleave_v fast_o unto_o it_o and_o suffer_v not_o yourselves_o to_o be_v seduce_v by_o false_a teacher_n although_o they_o come_v and_o say_v that_o they_o have_v the_o holy_a ghost_n for_o know_v you_o this_o first_o that_o no_o pprophecy_n in_o the_o scripture_n be_v of_o any_o private_a interpretation_n note_v this_o sai_n therefore_o well_o and_o think_v not_o that_o you_o shall_v ever_o be_v able_a of_o your_o own_o reason_n and_o industry_n to_o expound_v and_o explain_v the_o scripture_n hereby_o be_v throw_v down_o to_o the_o ground_n all_o the_o proper_a and_o private_a interpretation_n of_o all_o the_o father_n and_o straight_o charge_v here_o give_v to_o the_o contrary_a that_o no_o man_n shall_v rely_v or_o lean_v to_o any_o such_o explanation_n if_o either_o hierome_n or_o augustine_n or_o any_o other_o of_o the_o father_n interpret_v and_o expound_v any_o place_n of_o the_o scripture_n of_o themselves_o or_o by_o any_o of_o their_o own_o devise_a gloss_n we_o be_v if_o the_o same_o be_v dissonant_n to_o the_o doctrine_n contain_v in_o other_o text_n of_o the_o sacred_a scripture_n utter_o to_o refuse_v those_o their_o interpretation_n for_o s._n peter_n do_v here_o forbid_v any_o man_n to_o interpret_v and_o expound_v the_o scripture_n by_o his_o own_o spirit_n the_o true_a explanation_n thereof_o be_v the_o work_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n and_o he_o it_o be_v that_o must_v interpret_v doctrine_n contain_v in_o s._n paul_n epistle_n which_o proove_v that_o this_o epistle_n be_v write_v long_o after_o the_o epistle_n of_o paul_n and_o this_o be_v one_o of_o those_o place_n whereby_o a_o man_n may_v take_v occasion_n to_o think_v that_o this_o epistle_n be_v not_o write_v by_o s._n peter_n as_o also_o a_o other_o sentence_n a_o little_a afore_o in_o this_o present_a chapter_n express_v do_v insinuate_v and_o purporte_n where_o he_o say_v that_o god_n will_v have_v no_o man_n to_o perish_v but_o will_v all_o man_n to_o come_v to_o repentance_n for_o it_o seem_v to_o savour_n of_o a_o low_a spirit_n and_o to_o carry_v a_o mean_a grace_n then_o to_o one_o inspire_v with_o a_o apostolical_a spirit_n be_v usual_a yet_o be_v it_o not_o altogether_o incredible_a nor_o amiss_o to_o think_v this_o epistle_n to_o be_v write_v by_o peter_n for_o see_v that_o in_o this_o epistle_n his_o purpose_n and_o meaning_n be_v not_o to_o write_v of_o faith_n but_o of_o love_n and_o charity_n be_v purposely_o abaze_v himself_o in_o his_o style_n as_o the_o nature_n of_o charity_n always_o be_v to_o do_v to_o the_o intent_n thereby_o to_o humble_v himself_o to_o his_o neighbour_n as_o on_o the_o other_o part_n faith_n always_o mount_v and_o lift_v up_o itself_o to_o godward_o and_o this_o 〈◊〉_d he_o well_o see_v will_v come_v to_o pass_v that_o many_o light_n and_o unstable_a spirit_n will_v wrest_v and_o wring_v invert_v and_o pervert_v s._n paul_n word_n in_o sundry_a place_n for_o that_o in_o his_o epistle_n there_o be_v some_o text_n hard_a to_o be_v understand_v as_o where_o he_o say_v that_o no_o man_n be_v justify_v by_o work_n but_o by_o faith_n only_o rom._n iij._n again_o that_o the_o law_n be_v give_v to_o know_v sinne._n rom._n iiij_o &_o seven_o and_o moreover_o where_o sin_n abound_v there_o grace_v abound_v much_o more_o rom._n v._n and_o such_o like_a place_n for_o assoon_o as_o they_o hear_v this_o they_o straight_o way_n break_v out_o into_o these_o or_o y_z e_z like_o speech_n â—f_o it_o be_v thus_o we_o will_v live_v ydlie_a and_o merry_o we_o will_v do_v to_o good_a work_n at_o all_o and_o yet_o shall_v we_o nevertheless_o be_v save_v and_o justify_v and_o after_o this_o sort_n even_o nowadays_o do_v they_o â—aise_v on_o we_o and_o shameful_o help_v we_o fai_v that_o we_o in_o our_o sermon_n condemn_v and_o dispraise_v good_a work_n but_o we_o may_v not_o think_v it_o any_o marvel_n or_o strange_a thing_n see_v they_o have_v not_o spare_v to_o wrest_v and_o misconstrue_v s._n paul_n word_n you_o therefore_o belove_v sing_v you_o know_v these_o thing_n before_o beware_v lest_o you_o be_v also_o pluck_v away_o with_o the_o error_n of_o the_o wicked_a and_o fall_v from_o your_o own_o steadfastness_n but_o grow_v in_o grace_n and_o in_o the_o knowledge_n of_o our_o lord_n and_o saviour_n jesus_n christ_n to_o he_o be_v glory_n both_o now_o and_o for_o evermore_o amen_n sing_v therefore_o you_o perfect_o know_v be_v more_o and_o more_o confirm_v and_o strengthenes_n and_o here_o we_o be_v to_o behold_v and_o note_v the_o great_a care_n that_o the_o apostle_n have_v over_o they_o which_o have_v now_o receive_v the_o faith_n which_o cause_v he_o to_o write_v unto_o they_o these_o two_o epistle_n wherein_o be_v large_o and_o plentiful_o lay_v down_o all_o and_o whatsoever_o be_v expedient_a and_o necessary_a for_o a_o christian_a man_n to_o know_v yea_o concern_v those_o thing_n also_o which_o be_v to_o come_v god_n grant_v unto_o we_o his_o grace_n that_o we_o may_v both_o right_o
