give_v it_o its_o due_a honour_n how_o saint_n paul_n establish_v the_o law_n by_o faith_n we_o show_v a_o little_a before_o in_o the_o exposition_n of_o this_o verse_n he_o establish_v it_o by_o make_v it_o or_o teach_v that_o it_o be_v a_o rule_n of_o our_o life_n though_o he_o deny_v to_o be_v the_o mean_n of_o justification_n and_o that_o we_o attain_v more_o ability_n to_o the_o keep_n will_v be_v apt_a to_o say_v that_o if_o it_o be_v so_o as_o st._n paul_n have_v say_v viz._n that_o god_n will_v not_o justify_v a_o jew_n though_o he_o be_v a_o jew_n by_o birth_n and_o though_o he_o do_v moreover_o seek_v justification_n by_o work_n if_o he_o believe_v not_o and_o yet_o will_v justify_v every_o one_o which_o believe_v though_o he_o be_v a_o gentile_a then_o there_o will_v be_v unrighteousness_n with_o god_n saint_n paul_n take_v away_o this_o objection_n show_v first_o that_o there_o be_v no_o unrighteousness_n with_o god_n in_o justify_v those_o which_o believe_v though_o they_o be_v gentile_n for_o he_o may_v just_o have_v mercy_n on_o who_o he_o will_v have_v mercy_n ver_fw-la 15._o and_o by_o the_o by_o ver_fw-la 16_o he_o show_v they_o who_o be_v ignorant_a of_o god_n way_n of_o righteousness_n or_o justification_n go_v about_o to_o establish_v a_o way_n of_o their_o own_o that_o it_o be_v not_o in_o they_o who_o choose_v a_o way_n of_o god_n who_o show_v mercy_n to_o who_o he_o will_v and_o to_o what_o way_n he_o will_n then_o as_o he_o have_v show_v that_o there_o be_v no_o unrighteousness_n in_o god_n if_o he_o do_v justify_v those_o which_o do_v believe_v though_o they_o be_v gentile_n he_o show_v verse_n 17._o by_o the_o example_n which_o god_n show_v upon_o pharaoh_n that_o there_o be_v no_o unrighteousness_n in_o god_n if_o he_o do_v not_o justify_v a_o jew_n though_o he_o be_v a_o jew_n by_o birth_n and_o seek_v justification_n by_o work_n if_o he_o believe_v not_o and_o conclude_v verse_n 18._o that_o god_n do_v just_o justify_v who_o he_o will_v and_o do_v just_o deny_v justification_n to_o who_o he_o will_v yea_o and_o harden_v they_o too_o and_o now_o be_v that_o god_n do_v every_o where_o complain_v of_o the_o jew_n and_o threaten_v to_o destroy_v they_o for_o the_o hardness_n of_o their_o heart_n a_o malapert_v jew_n start_v up_o and_o hear_v paul_n say_v that_o god_n harden_v who_o he_o will_v say_v but_o if_o god_n harden_v who_o he_o will_v why_o do_v he_o now_o find_v fault_n with_o we_o and_o threaten_v we_o for_o our_o hardness_n of_o heart_n for_o it_o be_v he_o that_o harden_v who_o he_o will_v and_o if_o he_o will_v harden_v we_o how_o can_v we_o help_v it_o be_v we_o able_a to_o resist_v he_o to_o this_o objectian_n make_v verse_n 19_o saint_n paul_n answer_v first_o by_o rebuke_v the_o objector_n for_o his_o sauciness_n who_o dare_v to_o chap_v logic_n thus_o with_o god_n verse_n 20_o 21._o then_o verse_n 22_o 23._o he_o give_v a_o more_o direct_a answer_n by_o which_o he_o show_v that_o god_n do_v harden_v they_o only_o occasional_o in_o that_o he_o do_v not_o cut_v they_o off_o but_o do_v endure_v they_o with_o much_o long-suffering_a by_o which_o those_o vessel_n of_o wrath_n that_o be_v they_o which_o be_v contentious_a and_o obey_v not_o the_o truth_n but_o obey_v unrighteousness_n fit_v themselves_o for_o destruction_n for_o though_o by_o his_o long-suffering_a god_n lead_v they_o to_o repentance_n yet_o they_o by_o the_o abuse_n thereof_o contract_a hardness_n and_o a_o impoenitent_a heart_n upon_o themselves_o heap_v up_o wrath_n against_o the_o day_n of_o wrath_n and_o revelation_n of_o the_o righteous_a judgement_n of_o god_n and_o therefore_o there_o be_v no_o unrighteousness_n in_o god_n if_o he_o be_v willing_a to_o show_v his_o wrath_n upon_o those_o vessel_n of_o wrath_n if_o they_o will_v not_o repent_v he_o find_v fault_n with_o they_o when_o they_o repent_v not_o and_o if_o by_o so_o do_v he_o show_v the_o abundance_n of_o his_o goodness_n also_o to_o the_o vessel_n of_o mercy_n by_o justify_v they_o and_o so_o prepare_v they_o to_o glory_n as_o he_o have_v before_o determine_v which_o vessel_n of_o mercy_n he_o show_v verse_n 24._o to_o be_v they_o which_o believe_v not_o of_o the_o jswe_v only_o but_o of_o the_o gentile_n also_o then_o to_o confirm_v what_o he_o have_v say_v concern_v those_o disobedient_a jew_n and_o the_o believe_a gentile_n he_o bring_v divers_a testimony_n out_o of_o the_o scripture_n verse_n 25_o 26_o 27_o 28_o 29._o and_o then_o he_o gather_v out_o of_o what_o he_o have_v say_v that_o the_o believe_a gentile_n have_v attain_v to_o justification_n by_o their_o faith_n ver_fw-la 30._o but_o the_o jew_n for_o the_o great_a part_n of_o they_o miss_v of_o justification_n because_o they_o seek_v it_o not_o by_o faith_n but_o by_o the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n and_o so_o have_v make_v way_n to_o that_o which_o he_o leave_v imperfect_a at_o the_o six_o verse_n of_o this_o chapter_n chap._n x._o in_o the_o ten_o chapter_n he_o show_v what_o that_o be_v which_o he_o say_v in_o the_o begin_n of_o the_o nine_o do_v grieve_v he_o for_o the_o jew_n which_o be_v this_o that_o they_o be_v ignorant_a of_o god_n way_n of_o righteousness_n and_o go_v about_o to_o establish_v their_o own_o way_n of_o righteousness_n submit_v not_o themselves_o unto_o that_o way_n of_o righteousness_n which_o god_n have_v appoint_v verse_n 3._o but_o he_o usher_v it_o in_o verse_n 1_o 2._o with_o other_o word_n than_o he_o use_v in_o the_o begin_n of_o the_o nine_o chapter_n then_o offend_v at_o christ_n who_o be_v the_o end_n of_o the_o law_n for_o righteousness_n then_o he_o show_v that_o the_o righteousness_n of_o the_o law_n and_o the_o righteousness_n of_o faith_n be_v not_o all_o one_o verse_n 5_o 6_o 7_o 8_o 9_o 10_o 11_o 12_o 13_o 14._o then_o from_o verse_n 14_o to_o the_o end_n he_o show_v that_o the_o gospel_n ought_v to_o be_v preach_v to_o the_o gentile_n and_o be_v preach_v to_o they_o and_o they_o receive_v it_o glad_o but_o though_o it_o be_v preach_v to_o the_o jew_n yet_o they_o refuse_v it_o and_o will_v have_v none_o of_o it_o wherefore_o because_o some_o may_v doubt_v concern_v the_o perverseness_n of_o the_o jew_n whether_o god_n have_v not_o or_o will_v not_o cast_v they_o off_o whole_o for_o this_o their_o perverseness_n chap._n xi_o the_o apostle_n in_o the_o eleven_o chapter_n move_v the_o question_n whether_o god_n have_v cast_v off_o his_o people_n the_o jew_n or_o no_o and_o answer_v it_o in_o the_o negative_a verse_n 1_o and_o to_o prove_v that_o he_o have_v not_o cast_v they_o all_o off_o he_o show_v that_o he_o be_v a_o jew_n and_o yet_o be_v accept_v of_o god_n and_o that_o the_o jew_n be_v a_o people_n who_o god_n do_v foreknow_v that_o be_v who_o god_n do_v determine_v from_o eternity_n so_o to_o love_v as_o not_o utter_o to_o forsake_v they_o verse_n 2._o and_o
of_o one_o and_o sometime_o in_o the_o person_n of_o another_o but_o most_o common_o his_o objection_n be_v to_o be_v understand_v as_o make_v in_o the_o person_n of_o a_o jew_n and_o yet_o not_o always_o of_o one_o kind_n of_o jew_n but_o sometime_o of_o one_o and_o sometime_o of_o another_o according_a to_o the_o diversity_n of_o opinion_n which_o be_v among_o the_o jew_n for_o some_o jew_n think_v it_o enough_o to_o their_o justification_n that_o they_o be_v the_o child_n of_o abraham_n other_o that_o they_o be_v circumcise_v other_o which_o be_v more_o learned_a that_o they_o have_v excellent_a skill_n in_o the_o law_n and_o other_o who_o be_v high_o conceit_v of_o the_o purity_n of_o their_o life_n rely_v upon_o their_o work_n for_o justification_n etc._n etc._n know_v second_o that_o the_o apostle_n when_o he_o have_v treat_v of_o a_o matter_n and_o be_v pass_v from_o that_o particular_a matter_n of_o which_o he_o treat_v and_o be_v upon_o another_o subject_n if_o in_o treat_v of_o this_o latter_a subject_n any_o thing_n may_v arise_v to_o prove_v his_o former_a matter_n he_o take_v notice_n of_o it_o oftentimes_o though_o it_o be_v but_o by_o the_o by_o and_o though_o he_o have_v no_o other_o reason_n so_o to_o do_v but_o because_o it_o prove_v his_o former_a matter_n a_o example_n of_o this_o you_o may_v have_v rom._n 10.17_o in_o those_o word_n so_o then_o faith_n come_v by_o hear_v which_o be_v not_o the_o conclusion_n of_o the_o subject_n which_o he_o have_v then_o in_o hand_n for_o the_o subject_n which_o he_o be_v then_o about_o be_v to_o prove_v that_o all_o the_o jew_n believe_v not_o for_o they_o that_o be_v the_o jew_n have_v not_o all_o obey_v the_o gospel_n say_v he_o verse_n 16._o and_o this_o he_o prove_v there_o verse_n 17._o by_o the_o testimony_n of_o the_o prophet_n isaiah_n for_o say_v he_o esaias_n say_v lord_n who_o have_v believe_v our_o report_n now_o out_o of_o this_o testimony_n of_o esaias_n this_o conclusion_n may_v be_v as_o well_o draw_v viz._n that_o faith_n come_v by_o hear_v as_o that_o viz._n that_o the_o jew_n do_v not_o all_o believe_v wherefore_o because_o this_o conclusion_n viz._n faith_n come_v by_o hear_v may_v be_v draw_v thence_o as_o well_o as_o that_o other_o he_o make_v mention_n of_o it_o here_o verse_n 17._o only_a to_o prove_v that_o which_o he_o say_v before_o ver_fw-la 14._o viz._n that_o none_o can_v believe_v in_o he_o of_o who_o they_o have_v not_o hear_v and_o after_o this_o manner_n as_o i_o conceive_v do_v the_o apostle_n bring_v in_o those_o word_n of_o the_o to_o show_v that_o there_o be_v no_o unrighteousness_n in_o god_n in_o show_v mercy_n to_o or_o in_o justify_v those_o which_o be_v figure_v either_o in_o isaac_n or_o in_o jacob_n that_o be_v in_o justify_v the_o faithful_a though_o they_o be_v gentile_n but_o yet_o because_o he_o have_v bewail_v the_o jew_n for_o that_o that_o they_o be_v ignorant_a of_o god_n way_n of_o righteousness_n or_o conclusion_n or_o thesis_n which_o he_o be_v to_o prove_v in_o this_o place_n when_o he_o be_v as_o i_o say_v to_o prove_v here_o that_o there_o be_v no_o unrighteousness_n in_o god_n for_o show_v mercy_n to_o or_o justify_v those_o which_o be_v typify_v either_o in_o isaac_n or_o in_o jacob_n that_o be_v for_o justify_v the_o faithful_a though_o they_o be_v gentile_n the_o three_o thing_n which_o i_o say_v be_v expedient_a to_o be_v know_v for_o the_o better_a understanding_n of_o this_o epistle_n of_o saint_n paul_n be_v to_o know_v how_o the_o part_n of_o scripture_n which_o he_o allege_v â—herein_o so_o often_o make_v for_o the_o purpose_n for_o which_o he_o allege_v they_o for_o indeed_o if_o any_o one_o shall_v turn_v to_o the_o several_a place_n out_o of_o which_o he_o take_v his_o testimony_n of_o scripture_n it_o will_v seem_v strange_a at_o the_o first_o to_o see_v how_o paul_n can_v bring_v they_o to_o prove_v such_o thing_n by_o they_o as_o he_o bring_v they_o for_o but_o that_o it_o may_v not_o seem_v strange_a this_o must_v be_v observe_v that_o many_o place_n of_o the_o scripture_n of_o the_o old_a testament_n have_v a_o double_a sense_n one_o concern_v terrene_a and_o corporeal_a thing_n and_o thing_n to_o come_v to_o pass_v before_o the_o day_n of_o the_o messiah_n another_o concern_v heavenly_a and_o spiritual_a thing_n of_o which_o those_o terrene_a and_o corporeal_a thing_n be_v a_o type_n the_o first_o may_v be_v call_v the_o literal_a or_o historical_a or_o mean_a sense_n the_o second_o the_o mystical_a or_o sublime_a sense_n of_o which_o because_o i_o have_v speak_v full_o in_o my_o preface_n to_o my_o exposition_n upon_o the_o prophet_n isaiah_n i_o shall_v speak_v no_o more_o here_o only_o this_o i_o add_v that_o the_o jew_n do_v acknowledge_v this_o twofold_a sense_n now_o the_o apostle_n in_o his_o testimony_n of_o scripture_n which_o he_o bring_v to_o prove_v several_a matter_n which_o he_o handle_v take_v those_o testimony_n of_o scripture_n for_o the_o most_o part_n not_o as_o they_o be_v in_o their_o first_o literal_a historical_a or_o mean_a sense_n but_o as_o they_o be_v to_o be_v take_v in_o their_o mystical_a and_o sublime_a sense_n according_a to_o which_o i_o have_v also_o interpret_v they_o in_o these_o my_o commentary_n respective_o the_o four_o thing_n which_o i_o say_v be_v expedient_a to_o be_v know_v for_o the_o better_a understanding_n of_o this_o epistle_n of_o saint_n paul_n be_v to_o know_v how_o he_o use_v many_o word_n which_o he_o use_v herein_o and_o in_o what_o sense_n he_o use_v they_o and_o of_o as_o many_o of_o such_o word_n as_o i_o think_v convenient_a i_o shall_v now_o speak_v in_o their_o alphabetical_a order_n add_v some_o thing_n also_o by_o occasion_n of_o have_v believe_v how_o great_a the_o strength_n of_o the_o lord_n be_v which_o he_o declare_v by_o his_o prophet_n that_o he_o will_v show_v for_o the_o deliverance_n of_o his_o people_n there_o be_v there_o be_v no_o proportion_n betwixt_o his_o work_n and_o that_o glory_n which_o shall_v be_v reveal_v in_o the_o saint_n but_o perhaps_o you_o will_v say_v that_o eternal_a glory_n will_v be_v due_a to_o such_o a_o one_o for_o his_o work_n by_o a_o contract_n or_o covenant_n of_o work_n which_o god_n make_v with_o adam_n but_o suppose_v that_o god_n have_v make_v such_o a_o covenant_n or_o despise_v not_o only_a moses_n but_o god_n himself_o second_o by_o permit_v the_o devil_n to_o suggest_v argument_n into_o the_o tyrannical_a &_o covetous_a mind_n of_o pharaoh_n show_v that_o he_o will_v if_o he_o shall_v let_v israel_n go_v suffer_v loss_n in_o his_o power_n by_o the_o loss_n of_o so_o great_a a_o people_n and_o loss_n in_o his_o profit_n by_o let_v so_o many_o go_v who_o he_o direct_a answer_n take_v up_o the_o objector_n for_o his_o sauciness_n in_o that_o he_o will_v be_v so_o saucy_a as_o to_o chap_v logic_n with_o his_o god_n whereas_o when_o we_o know_v that_o god_n have_v do_v any_o thing_n though_o we_o know_v not_o his_o particular_a reason_n and_o the_o manner_n of_o his_o work_n we_o shall_v with_o david_n become_v dumb_a and_o open_v not_o our_o mouth_n because_o it_o be_v his_o do_v psal_n 39.9_o know_v that_o god_n be_v not_o unjust_a in_o any_o of_o his_o work_n shall_v the_o thing_n form_v say_v to_o he_o that_o form_v it_o why_o have_v thou_o make_v i_o thus_o q._n d._n if_o a_o potter_n shall_v make_v a_o pot_n of_o a_o ugly_a fashion_n for_o abase_v use_n if_o this_o pot_n have_v sense_n and_o reason_n and_o be_v able_a to_o speak_v
