errand_n they_o come_v not_o to_o be_v convert_v but_o to_o be_v harden_v they_o have_v a_o mind_n not_o to_o believe_v and_o seek_v only_o a_o colour_n for_o their_o unbelief_n they_o ask_v he_o therefore_o for_o that_o which_o they_o very_o think_v he_o will_v not_o grant_v they_o that_o they_o may_v have_v some_o pretence_n for_o their_o infidelity_n now_o therefore_o our_o saviour_n have_v discover_v their_o design_n and_o detect_v their_o hypocrisy_n in_o the_o 2_o 3_o and_o 4_o verse_n in_o my_o text_n turn_v himself_o towards_o his_o disciple_n and_o give_v they_o this_o serious_a caution_n against_o they_o and_o all_o such_o kind_n of_o man_n take_v heed_n and_o beware_v etc._n etc._n for_o the_o full_a open_n of_o which_o i_o will_v brief_o inquire_v into_o these_o four_o thing_n first_o what_o be_v the_o importance_n of_o this_o metaphorical_a expression_n leaven_n and_o what_o our_o saviour_n mean_v by_o the_o leaven_n of_o pharisee_n and_o sadducee_n second_o more_o particular_o we_o will_v inquire_v what_o be_v the_o peculiar_a leaven_n of_o these_o two_o sect_n so_o often_o mention_v in_o the_o new-testament_n three_o we_o will_v consider_v what_o be_v the_o danger_n of_o that_o leaven_n and_o its_o contrariety_n to_o the_o doctrine_n and_o design_n of_o our_o saviour_n four_o and_o last_o we_o will_v inquire_v what_o this_o caution_n of_o our_o saviour_n imply_v and_o what_o he_o will_v have_v his_o disciple_n to_o do_v when_o he_o bid_v they_o take_v heed_n and_o beware_v etc._n etc._n and_o by_o that_o time_n i_o have_v give_v account_n of_o these_o four_o thing_n i_o shall_v not_o only_o have_v open_v the_o full_a scope_n of_o the_o text_n but_o i_o hope_v every_o attentive_a auditor_n will_v be_v satisfy_v of_o the_o seasonableness_n of_o this_o subject_n for_o the_o present_a time._n i_o begin_v with_o the_o first_o viz._n what_o our_o saviour_n mean_v by_o leaven_n in_o the_o word_n follow_v my_o text_n verse_n 7._o we_o find_v that_o the_o disciple_n take_v our_o saviour_n literal_o and_o reflect_v on_o themselves_o for_o their_o omission_n to_o provide_v bread_n and_o necessary_n for_o the_o voyage_n which_o they_o be_v now_o enter_v upon_o though_o he_o have_v oblique_o reprove_v their_o carelessness_n in_o that_o particular_a and_o that_o he_o have_v thence_o take_v occasion_n to_o interdict_v they_o all_o trade_n and_o civil_a commerce_n with_o those_o two_o sect_n of_o men._n but_o by_o the_o 12._o verse_n they_o understand_v their_o master_n mind_n better_o and_o know_v at_o length_n that_o he_o speak_v not_o of_o the_o leaven_n of_o bread_n but_o of_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o pharisee_n and_o sadducee_n indeed_o it_o be_v usual_a with_o our_o saviour_n by_o that_o metaphor_n to_o represent_v doctrine_n whether_o good_a or_o bad_a for_o matth._n chap._n 13._o 33._o he_o compare_v his_o own_o institution_n to_o it_o say_v the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n be_v like_o leaven_n which_o a_o woman_n take_v and_o hide_v in_o two_o measure_n of_o meal_n till_o the_o whole_a be_v leaven_v etc._n etc._n and_o the_o resemblance_n be_v very_o fit_a and_o natural_a for_o as_o it_o be_v the_o nature_n of_o leaven_n that_o it_o work_v insensible_o quick_o insinuate_v itself_o and_o universal_o diffuse_v its_o efficacy_n over_o the_o whole_a mass_n into_o which_o it_o be_v put_v so_o in_o like_a manner_n doctrine_n work_v upon_o the_o mind_n of_o man_n and_o give_v a_o tincture_n of_o its_o own_o nature_n and_o temper_n to_o they_o insomuch_o as_o that_o such_o as_o a_o man_n persuasion_n and_o principle_n be_v such_o ordinary_o at_o least_o will_v his_o life_n and_o practice_n be_v it_o be_v true_a indeed_o that_o sometime_o man_n life_n be_v better_a than_o their_o principle_n and_o sometime_o also_o worse_o for_o it_o may_v fall_v out_o that_o man_n of_o very_o unhappy_a and_o mischievous_a opinion_n may_v yet_o live_v virtuous_o when_o the_o probity_n of_o their_o temper_n be_v such_o as_o that_o it_o antidote_n they_o against_o the_o malignity_n and_o venom_n of_o their_o persuasion_n and_o on_o the_o other_o side_n it_o be_v no_o infrequent_a though_o a_o unhappy_a spectacle_n to_o behold_v other_o of_o very_o noble_a and_o generous_a principle_n as_o to_o doctrine_n yet_o to_o live_v very_o lewd_a and_o profligate_v life_n such_o man_n withhold_a the_o truth_n in_o unrighteousness_n as_o the_o apostle_n phrase_n be_v or_o outface_v the_o light_n and_o debauch_v their_o conscience_n in_o compliance_n with_o their_o lust_n and_o carnal_a or_o secular_a interest_n but_o as_o i_o say_v ordinary_o it_o be_v otherwise_o for_o such_o a_o state_n of_o contradiction_n to_o principle_n must_v needs_o be_v violent_a and_o unnatural_a and_o the_o life_n and_o action_n of_o man_n do_v as_o reasonable_o bear_v proportion_n to_o the_o principle_n of_o their_o mind_n and_o conscience_n as_o it_o be_v natural_a for_o the_o stream_n to_o rise_v as_o high_a as_o its_o source_n and_o fountain_n and_o no_o high_o hence_o it_o be_v that_o our_o saviour_n matth._n 12._o 33._o say_v either_o make_v the_o tree_n good_a and_o his_o fruit_n good_a or_o the_o tree_n corrupt_v and_o the_o fruit_n corrupt_v and_o again_o matth._n 6._o 23._o he_o pronounce_v if_o the_o light_n that_o be_v in_o thou_o be_v darkness_n that_o darkness_n must_v be_v great_a and_o intolerable_a to_o the_o truth_n of_o which_o observation_n the_o general_a experience_n of_o all_o the_o world_n bear_v ample_a testimony_n among_o several_a instance_n of_o which_o i_o can_v but_o remark_n a_o very_a pertinent_a passage_n of_o a_o heathen_a historian_n in_o the_o life_n of_o that_o wicked_a emperor_n tiberius_n his_o word_n concern_v he_o be_v these_o erat_fw-la circa_fw-la deos_fw-la negligentior_fw-la quip_n mathematicae_fw-la addictus_fw-la persuasionisque_fw-la plenus_fw-la omne_fw-la sato_fw-la agi_fw-la which_o i_o render_v thus_o q._n d._n tiberius_n be_v a_o profane_a prince_n careless_a of_o religion_n and_o without_o any_o devotion_n towards_o god_n and_o no_o wonder_n for_o he_o be_v a_o admirer_n of_o astrology_n and_o full_a of_o the_o opinion_n that_o the_o star_n or_o fate_n govern_v the_o world_n and_o not_o god._n and_o in_o short_a this_o be_v the_o true_a reason_n of_o all_o education_n and_o of_o all_o the_o care_n and_o diligence_n that_o evil_a and_o good_a man_n use_v in_o propound_v and_o propagate_a good_a doctrine_n and_o prevent_v the_o contrary_a not_o that_o they_o think_v god_n be_v please_v with_o dry_a opinion_n and_o speculation_n but_o because_o they_o be_v aware_a that_o principle_n draw_v on_o practice_n and_o that_o evil_a opinion_n corrupt_v good_a manner_n but_o somuch_o for_o that_o i_o proceed_v in_o the_o second_o place_n to_o inquire_v what_o be_v the_o peculiar_a leaven_n of_o these_o pharisee_n and_o sadducee_n which_o our_o saviour_n thus_o cuation_n against_o and_o for_o this_o the_o learned_a jewish_a historian_n josephus_n in_o his_o 13_o book_n of_o antiquity_n and_o in_o his_o 2d_o book_n of_o the_o jewish_a war_n have_v give_v we_o a_o very_a exact_a account_n of_o all_o the_o sect_n of_o religion_n among_o that_o people_n and_o from_o he_o i_o shall_v present_v this_o auditory_a with_o the_o substance_n of_o what_o he_o deliver_v touch_v the_o pharisee_n and_o sadducee_n wherein_o we_o be_v at_o present_a concern_v and_o first_o it_o be_v notorious_a that_o the_o sect_n of_o the_o sadducee_n utter_o deny_v the_o be_v of_o angel_n and_o spirit_n or_o of_o all_o spiritual_a substance_n and_o acknowledge_v nothing_o but_o matter_n or_o body_n in_o the_o whole_a universe_n and_o consequent_o hereof_o they_o must_v also_o renounce_v the_o immortality_n of_o the_o soul_n the_o resurrection_n of_o the_o body_n and_o eternal_a life_n in_o the_o world_n to_o come_v whereas_o on_o the_o contrary_a the_o pharisee_n acknowledge_v all_o the_o aforesaid_a great_a article_n as_o we_o learn_v act_v 23._o 8._o only_o this_o be_v to_o be_v add_v withal_o that_o these_o latter_a entertain_v so_o many_o legendary_a story_n about_o these_o great_a point_n and_o have_v such_o very_a crazy_a notion_n of_o they_o that_o they_o thereby_o render_v the_o very_a doctrine_n ridiculous_a and_o incredible_a again_o the_o sadducee_n be_v gross_a idolater_n of_o the_o letter_n and_o as_o they_o receive_v only_o the_o law_n of_o moses_n exclude_v the_o prophet_n and_o all_o other_o sacred_a write_n so_o they_o understand_v the_o book_n of_o the_o law_n in_o the_o most_o crass_a and_o literal_a sense_n and_o admit_v not_o of_o any_o interpretation_n or_o consequence_n from_o it_o though_o never_o so_o clear_o and_o natural_o deduce_v on_o the_o other_o side_n the_o pharisees_n not_o only_o receive_v the_o whole_a scripture_n of_o the_o old_a testament_n but_o beside_o be_v great_a patroness_n of_o oral_a tradition_n and_o allow_v as_o great_a or_o great_a authority_n to_o it_o than_o the_o write_a word_n and_o
consequent_o think_v themselves_o oblige_v under_o as_o great_a a_o necessity_n to_o the_o observance_n of_o those_o thing_n that_o come_v down_o to_o they_o by_o the_o tradition_n of_o their_o father_n as_o to_o those_o they_o find_v write_v in_o the_o law_n and_o the_o prophet_n from_o whence_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v as_o it_o must_v needs_o do_v that_o their_o creed_n become_v vast_a and_o voluminous_a and_o their_o devotion_n be_v clog_v with_o innumerable_a rite_n and_o ceremony_n the_o result_n of_o all_o which_o be_v this_o that_o the_o pharisee_n have_v too_o much_o faith_n such_o as_o it_o be_v and_o the_o sadducee_n proper_o speak_v none_o at_o all_o the_o sadducee_n can_v upon_o their_o principle_n have_v no_o ground_n for_o any_o religion_n or_o piety_n and_o the_o pharisee_n by_o their_o prodigious_a addition_n to_o god_n institution_n have_v quite_o corrupt_v and_o lose_v the_o true_a idea_n of_o religion_n in_o short_a whatever_o cold_a pretence_n a_o sadducee_n can_v make_v to_o civility_n or_o morality_n it_o be_v evident_a he_o can_v have_v no_o devotion_n on_o the_o contrary_a the_o very_a character_n of_o a_o pharisee_fw-mi be_v a_o confident_a devotionist_n without_o morality_n now_o from_o what_o have_v be_v deliver_v in_o this_o short_a account_n of_o these_o two_o sect_n it_o will_v be_v easy_a to_o discern_v the_o reason_n why_o our_o saviour_n give_v such_o caution_n against_o their_o leaven_n and_o what_o the_o mischief_n and_o danger_n to_o his_o doctrine_n and_o design_n be_v from_o each_o of_o they_o single_o or_o both_o together_o which_o be_v the_o 3._o three_o inquiry_n but_o because_o herein_o lie_v especial_o the_o emphasis_n of_o the_o text_n i_o will_v give_v a_o more_o particular_a account_n of_o this_o matter_n as_o follow_v and_o first_o as_o touch_v the_o sadducee_n it_o be_v manifest_a by_o what_o have_v be_v say_v that_o their_o leaven_n be_v the_o same_o with_o that_o of_o the_o epicurean_a philosopher_n and_o can_v by_o no_o mean_n be_v a_o principle_n of_o conscience_n or_o religion_n but_o a_o doctrine_n calculate_v for_o this_o present_a life_n for_o believe_v neither_o angel_n nor_o spirit_n nor_o any_o thing_n to_o be_v in_o the_o world_n but_o mere_a matter_n it_o be_v impossible_a they_o shall_v have_v any_o concern_v for_o another_o world_n and_o consequent_o they_o can_v have_v no_o religion_n only_o as_o the_o law_n of_o moses_n be_v lex_fw-la terrae_fw-la the_o law_n of_o the_o land_n so_o far_o it_o stand_v they_o in_o hand_n to_o observe_v it_o or_o at_o least_o to_o pretend_v a_o external_a conformity_n to_o it_o for_o the_o sake_n of_o their_o secular_a interest_n and_o advantage_n to_o be_v sure_a such_o principle_n can_v lay_v no_o obligation_n upon_o their_o conscience_n and_o therefore_o they_o be_v the_o true_a race_n of_o latitudinarian_o and_o can_v comply_v with_o whatsoever_o be_v uppermost_a and_o upon_o that_o score_n can_v not_o withstand_v the_o temptation_n of_o be_v of_o the_o religion_n of_o the_o prince_n whatever_o it_o be_v according_o it_o be_v observable_a in_o a_o parallel_n place_n to_o this_o of_o my_o text_n namely_o mark_v 8._o 15._o for_o the_o leaven_n of_o the_o pharisee_n we_o have_v the_o leaven_n of_o herod_n as_o signify_v the_o same_o thing_n for_o these_o man_n it_o seem_v consistent_o enough_o with_o their_o principle_n can_v flatter_v that_o vile_a prince_n so_o far_o as_o to_o cry_v he_o up_o for_o the_o messiah_n it_o be_v i_o say_v a_o sect_n or_o leaven_n fit_a for_o man_n of_o covetous_a and_o ambitious_a design_n and_o be_v successful_a to_o those_o purpose_n for_o act_n 5._o 17._o we_o find_v the_o great_a council_n or_o sanhedrin_n of_o the_o jew_n chief_o consist_v of_o those_o of_o this_o leaven_n these_o man_n be_v of_o the_o spawn_n of_o the_o leviathan_n and_o derive_v the_o sanction_n of_o religion_n from_o humane_a legislation_n and_o the_o command_n of_o god_n oblige_v no_o further_o than_o they_o be_v enact_v by_o the_o civil_a magistrate_n beside_o all_o this_o they_o have_v the_o right_a knack_n of_o trime_a between_o all_o religion_n for_o whatsoever_o be_v the_o inward_a opinion_n of_o their_o mind_n they_o can_v conceal_v or_o deny_v or_o mince_v the_o matter_n so_o that_o their_o persuasion_n shall_v never_o expose_v they_o to_o any_o damage_n nor_o their_o conscience_n interfere_v with_o their_o interest_n now_o the_o christian_a religion_n which_o our_o saviour_n come_v to_o introduce_v and_o to_o plant_v in_o the_o world_n be_v not_o only_o a_o very_a strict_a and_o holy_a but_o a_o most_o solemn_a and_o serious_a institution_n nothing_o can_v be_v more_o contrary_a to_o it_o than_o such_o loose_a principle_n as_o these_o his_o be_v a_o religion_n fit_v to_o please_v god_n not_o to_o flatter_v and_o humour_v man_n it_o be_v a_o religion_n design_v for_o the_o save_n of_o man_n soul_n in_o another_o world_n and_o to_o fit_v they_o for_o eternal_a life_n and_o not_o to_o serve_v a_o turn_n or_o to_o save_v a_o stake_n in_o this_o world._n upon_o all_o which_o there_o can_v be_v no_o wonder_n that_o he_o earnest_o caution_n against_o the_o leaven_n of_o the_o sadducee_n which_o undermine_v the_o principle_n of_o all_o religion_n and_o then_o in_o the_o next_o place_n for_o the_o religion_n of_o the_o pharisee_n that_o by_o what_o be_v say_v in_o the_o description_n of_o their_o leaven_n consist_v of_o so_o many_o incredible_a article_n of_o faith_n ground_v only_o upon_o tradition_n and_o legendary_a story_n and_o of_o such_o innumerable_a trifle_n and_o arbitrary_a rite_n and_o ceremony_n and_o yet_o make_v essential_o necessary_a to_o salvation_n be_v utter_o contrary_a to_o the_o whole_a tenor_n and_o design_n of_o the_o gospel_n as_o may_v be_v make_v appear_v in_o innumerable_a instance_n of_o which_o i_o will_v here_o specify_v only_o these_o five_o particular_n follow_v in_o the_o first_o place_n a_o principal_a design_n of_o our_o saviour_n in_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o gospel_n be_v to_o instruct_v man_n with_o right_a notion_n of_o god_n which_o be_v not_o only_o the_o first_o and_o most_o immediate_a honour_n to_o the_o divine_a majesty_n but_o the_o only_a solid_a foundation_n of_o all_o virtue_n and_o piety_n the_o right_a apprehension_n of_o god_n perfection_n and_o attribute_n be_v the_o great_a obligation_n upon_o our_o mind_n to_o reverence_n and_o observe_v he_o in_o general_n and_o be_v of_o great_a use_n also_o to_o direct_v we_o in_o the_o particular_a instance_n of_o our_o duty_n towards_o he_o now_o the_o pharisee_n superstition_n be_v contrariwise_o very_o apt_a to_o breed_v in_o man_n very_o mean_a and_o unworthy_a notion_n of_o the_o divine_a majesty_n and_o so_o tend_v natural_o both_o to_o confound_v the_o measure_n and_o to_o subvert_v the_o very_a ground_n and_o reason_n of_o piety_n and_o virtue_n partly_o as_o it_o mighty_o abate_v of_o his_o grandeur_n and_o majesty_n whilst_o it_o represent_v he_o as_o insist_v upon_o so_o many_o little_a thing_n as_o carry_v neither_o weight_n nor_o worth_n nor_o intrinsic_a reason_n in_o they_o we_o always_o count_v it_o a_o argument_n of_o a_o little_a mind_n to_o be_v wrought_v upon_o by_o mere_a compliment_n to_o be_v please_v with_o trifle_n and_o to_o be_v offend_v with_o such_o ceremonious_a omission_n and_o we_o can_v natural_o esteem_v he_o to_o be_v a_o wise_a and_o great_a man_n who_o we_o observe_v to_o be_v of_o that_o temper_n much_o less_o can_v we_o imagine_v that_o he_o shall_v be_v a_o infinite_o wise_a god_n a_o full_a perfect_a and_o self-sufficient_a be_v that_o will_v endure_v to_o be_v flatter_v with_o ceremony_n be_v force_v with_o gift_n be_v propitiate_v with_o formal_a oblation_n be_v complemented_a with_o external_a address_n impose_v upon_o by_o show_n and_o shadow_n or_o be_v offend_v for_o the_o want_n of_o any_o such_o thing_n now_o the_o pharisee_n leaven_n consist_v whole_o of_o these_o without_o regard_n to_o true_a piety_n and_o generous_a obedience_n and_o conformity_n of_o heart_n and_o life_n to_o he_o quite_o cloud_v and_o obscure_v the_o glory_n of_o his_o divinity_n and_o render_v he_o more_o like_o a_o man_n than_o a_o god_n and_o indeed_o more_o like_o a_o little_a necessitous_a narrow_a mind_a man_n than_o a_o wise_a and_o a_o great_a one_o partly_o as_o it_o render_v he_o a_o unbenign_a and_o captious_a deity_n such_o a_o one_o as_o insist_v upon_o very_a punctilio_n and_o be_v prone_a to_o take_v advantage_n of_o his_o creature_n upon_o the_o small_a omission_n the_o effect_n of_o which_o must_v needs_o be_v that_o man_n may_v be_v possible_o tempt_v to_o fear_v and_o to_o stand_v under_o the_o slavish_a dread_n of_o such_o a_o god_n but_o it_o be_v plain_o impossible_a they_o shall_v love_v he_o without_o which_o there_o can_v be_v no_o life_n nor_o soul_n in_o religion_n above_o all_o this_o
