word_n be_v the_o ultimate_a reason_n of_o our_o assertion_n if_o we_o exclude_v the_o infallible_a authority_n of_o a_o evidence_v church_n neither_o the_o canon_n of_o scripture_n nor_o any_o verity_n in_o it_o nor_o its_o true_a sense_n which_o heretic_n deprave_v can_v be_v admit_v as_o god_n infallible_a word_n therefore_o s._n austin_n speak_v most_o profound_o where_o he_o church_n the_o reason_n why_o faith_n must_v be_v resolve_v into_o god_n testimony_n speak_v by_o the_o church_n profess_v he_o will_v not_o believe_v the_o gospel_n without_o church_n authority_n hence_o it_o follow_v that_o though_o one_o may_v believe_v the_o mystery_n of_o the_o trinity_n or_o the_o incarnation_n for_o the_o truth_n reveal_v in_o scripture_n yet_o if_o a_o further_a question_n be_v move_v concern_v the_o authenticalness_n of_o these_o very_a scriptural_a expression_n all_o if_o they_o will_v final_o resolve_v their_o faith_n must_v rely_v on_o god_n testimony_n speak_v by_o the_o church_n and_o believe_v that_o very_a doctrine_n to_o be_v divine_a because_o she_o own_o be_v it_o as_o divine_a 10._o thus_o we_o say_v chap._n 20._o n._n 11._o that_o the_o infallible_a authority_n of_o the_o present_a church_n consummate_v the_o ancient_a revelation_n which_o long_o since_o past_a and_o remote_a from_o we_o can_v move_v to_o believe_v unless_o her_o testimony_n conuey_n it_o to_o we_o and_o in_o this_o sense_n compleat'_v it_o and_o what_o way_n of_o believe_v or_o resolve_v faith_n can_v be_v more_o easy_a then_o to_o say_n i_o believe_v the_o easy_a this_o way_n of_o believe_v most_o easy_a incarnation_n both_o because_o s._n john_n write_v it_o and_o because_o god_n speak_v by_o the_o church_n say_v he_o write_v it_o these_o two_o indivisible_o take_v may_v as_o well_o make_v up_o one_o total_a motive_n of_o believe_v as_o the_o royal_a prophet_n testimony_n and._n s._n peter_n infallible_a declaration_n add_v to_o it_o act._n 2._o v._o 25._o become_v one_o entire_a total_a motive_n to_o those_o first_o believe_v christian_n i_o say_v indivisible_o and_o condition_n the_o church_n testimony_n not_o mere_o a_o condition_n therefore_o the_o church_n testimony_n concurre_v not_o mere_o as_o a_o extrinsical_a condition_n previous_o assent_v to_o but_o joint_o terminate_v faith_n together_o with_o the_o ancient_a revelation_n as_o shall_v doctrine_n for_o we_o all_o believe_v that_o the_o true_a spouse_n of_o christ_n be_v holy_a believe_v how_o the_o motive_n induce_v to_o believe_v unite_v in_o faith_n universal_o spread_v the_o whole_a world_n over_o etc._n etc._n therefore_o they_o can_v no_o more_o rational_o induce_v to_o believe_v that_o first_o necessary_a truth_n viz._n all_o be_v call_v to_o one_o communion_n of_o faith_n than_o one_o article_n of_o faith_n obscure_a in_o itself_o rational_o induce_v to_o believe_v another_o whole_o as_o obscure_v we_o have_v answer_v above_o these_o motive_n may_v be_v consider_v two_o way_n first_o as_o they_o be_v evident_o perceptible_a by_o sense_n and_o so_o natural_o they_o precede_v faith_n and_o induce_v to_o believe_v 2._o as_o attest_v also_o be_v doctrine_n of_o the_o church_n also_o upon_o god_n own_o authority_n speak_v by_o the_o church_n and_o in_o this_o sense_n they_o precede_v not_o faith_n but_o be_v article_n believe_v wherein_o there_o be_v no_o mystery_n at_o all_o if_o which_o be_v certain_a the_o same_o thing_n can_v be_v both_o know_v and_o believe_v by_o different_a assent_n upon_o distinct_a motive_n a._n 5._o objection_n scripture_n when_o new_o write_v and_o propose_v by_o the_o evangelist_n or_o apostle_n to_o the_o primitive_a christian_n believer_n in_o what_o sense_n scripture_n be_v complete_a to_o the_o primitive_a believer_n be_v to_o they_o so_o total_a and_o complete_a a_o formal_a object_n to_o ground_n faith_n upon_o that_o they_o need_v no_o authority_n of_o the_o church_n to_o complete_a it_o more_o therefore_o it_o be_v still_o a_o full_a and_o perfect_a motive_n of_o believe_v in_o order_n to_o all_o this_o very_a age_n independent_o of_o church_n authority_n the_o objection_n bring_v with_o it_o its_o own_o solution_n for_o if_o those_o holy_a writer_n of_o scripture_n be_v infallible_a whereof_o no_o man_n doubt_n and_o propose_v all_o they_o write_v as_o god_n divine_a word_n that_o very_a proposition_n be_v full_o as_o certain_a to_o they_o as_o any_o church_n authority_n whether_o past_a or_o present_a can_v be_v to_o us._n hence_o i_o say_v though_o scripture_n be_v then_o that_o infallible_a publication_n suppose_v a_o full_a and_o complete_a motive_n to_o ground_n faith_n upon_o yet_o now_o it_o can_v be_v so_o quâ—ad_fw-la nos_fw-la or_o in_o order_n to_o believer_n in_o this_o present_a state_n without_o more_o not_o because_o there_o be_v any_o want_n in_o scripture_n consider_v in_o itself_o but_o upon_o another_o account_n that_o circumstance_n be_v very_o authority_n why_o not_o so_o now_o to_o we_o without_o church_n authority_n different_a and_o notable_o change_v since_o those_o first_o day_n for_o now_o we_o have_v neither_o apostle_n nor_o prophet_n at_o hand_n to_o testify_v or_o publish_v the_o scripture_n divinity_n the_o ancient_a sign_n of_o credibility_n which_o adorn_v those_o first_o bless_a man_n and_o make_v scripture_n most_o acceptable_a be_v out_o of_o our_o sight_n therefore_o god_n church_n succeed'_v with_o her_o lustre_n and_o supply_n as_o it_o be_v that_o want_n or_o take_v the_o place_n of_o those_o decease_a prophet_n and_o apostle_n 13._o by_o what_o be_v here_o say_a you_o may_v easy_o understand_v the_o explicate_v two_o term_n explicate_v sense_n of_o those_o two_o term_n quoad_fw-la se_fw-la and_o quoad_fw-la nos_fw-la frequent_o use_v in_o this_o matter_n though_o not_o free_a from_o sectary_n cavil_n who_o say_v whatever_o be_v quoad_fw-la se_fw-la consider_v in_o itself_o a_o a_o full_a and_o infallible_a proposition_n divine_a a_o revelation_n may_v be_v in_o itself_o divine_a make_v of_o the_o object_n otherwise_o most_o certain_o a_o revelation_n may_v be_v in_o itself_o both_o divine_a and_o infallible_a though_o it_o appear_v not_o so_o to_o all_o for_o want_v of_o a_o due_a application_n to_o believer_n again_o it_o may_v be_v in_o some_o circumstance_n a_o complete_a motive_n to_o ground_n faith_n upon_o and_o in_o another_o state_n cease_v to_o be_v so_o many_o verity_n in_o scripture_n when_o first_o write_v and_o propose_v by_o apostolical_a man_n be_v complete_a object_n of_o faith_n to_o the_o primitive_a christian_n yet_o be_v not_o by_o virtue_n of_o that_o proposition_n all_o think_v it_o appear_v not_o so_o to_o all_o now_o so_o to_o we_o because_o they_o neither_o write_v in_o this_o state_n nor_o immediate_o propose_v the_o truth_n contain_v in_o scripture_n hence_o it_o be_v that_o the_o church_n as_o we_o say_v supply_v that_o defect_n and_o compleat'_v by_o her_o proposition_n those_o ancient_a revelation_n which_o issue_v from_o christ_n and_o his_o apostle_n and_o for_o clear_n the_o church_n testimony_n clear_n this_o reason_n her_o testimony_n quoad_fw-la nos_fw-la be_v more_o clear_a more_o know_v and_o more_o immediate_o credible_a than_o scripture_n can_v be_v 14._o 3._o difficulty_n may_v arise_v concern_v the_o scripture_n canon_n and_o sense_n also_o which_o none_o can_v decide_v but_o the_o church_n only_o and_o upon_o that_o account_n she_o be_v more_o credible_a and_o more_o reason_n and_o necessary_a for_o other_o reason_n immediate_o know_v to_o we_o than_o the_o scripture_n abstruse_a sense_n which_o be_v very_o often_o remote_a from_o we_o before_o god_n speak_v by_o this_o oracle_n lay_v the_o truth_n open_a in_o clear_a term_n and_o what_o wonder_n be_v here_o whilst_o sectary_n confess_v to_o understand_v the_o true_a sense_n of_o god_n word_n
