contempt_n and_o loathe_n of_o the_o same_o but_o contrariwise_o to_o build_v church_n and_o gorgeous_o to_o deck_v they_o for_o the_o maintenance_n of_o mass_n oblation_n false_a worship_n and_o idolatry_n all_o this_o he_o can_v abide_v well_o enough_o for_o by_o these_o thing_n he_o know_v that_o his_o strength_n be_v not_o diminish_v nor_o his_o power_n weaken_v but_o when_o the_o word_n of_o god_n be_v preach_v concern_v remission_n of_o sin_n the_o righteousness_n that_o come_v by_o christ_n and_o life_n everlasting_a this_o doctrine_n destroy_v his_o kingdom_n this_o cause_v he_o to_o rage_n and_o to_o seek_v by_o all_o mean_v possible_a how_o he_o may_v hinder_v the_o course_n of_o the_o gospel_n the_o other_o part_n of_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n be_v to_o praise_v the_o name_n of_o the_o lord_n word_n this_o david_n make_v the_o second_o kind_n of_o worship_n when_o he_o commend_v his_o jerusalem_n and_o here_o again_o note_v that_o he_o speak_v nothing_o of_o the_o sacrifice_n of_o the_o law_n for_o albeit_o he_o do_v not_o discommend_v they_o as_o i_o say_v before_o yet_o he_o reckon_v they_o but_o as_o chaff_n in_o comparison_n of_o the_o word_n and_o the_o fruit_n which_o follow_v thereof_o which_o be_v thank_n give_v and_o if_o he_o have_v name_v the_o sley_a of_o sacrifice_n every_o man_n have_v not_o be_v able_a to_o serve_v god_n with_o that_o kind_n of_o worship_n therefore_o he_o require_v nothing_o else_o but_o that_o which_o they_o be_v able_a to_o do_v without_o great_a charge_n which_o yet_o notwithstanding_o very_o few_o do_v he_o do_v not_o condemn_v the_o build_n of_o the_o temple_n which_o afterward_o shall_v be_v do_v by_o his_o son_n solomon_n but_o do_v earnest_o desire_v the_o same_o and_o the_o cause_n why_o he_o do_v desire_v it_o here_o you_o see_v namely_o that_o first_o the_o name_n of_o god_n may_v there_o be_v preach_v and_o then_o that_o god_n may_v there_o accept_v the_o prayer_n of_o his_o people_n with_o praise_n and_o thank_n give_v for_o his_o benefit_n receive_v hitherto_o we_o have_v hear_v how_o the_o prophet_n extol_v and_o magnify_v the_o incomparable_a gift_n &_o benefit_n of_o god_n the_o word_n i_o mean_v with_o thank_n and_o praise_n unto_o god_n for_o the_o same_o for_o that_o be_v a_o benefit_n and_o blessing_n in_o deed_n which_o be_v know_v and_o acknowledge_v so_o to_o be_v all_o the_o world_n as_o we_o see_v be_v full_a &_o even_o glut_v with_o the_o benefit_n of_o god_n notwithstanding_o it_o remain_v still_o in_o such_o blindness_n that_o it_o know_v they_o not_o to_o be_v the_o gift_n of_o god_n and_o therefore_o it_o take_v and_o use_v they_o not_o otherwise_o then_o hog_n do_v their_o draff_n &_o swill_n but_o david_n see_v that_o god_n have_v give_v he_o a_o kingdom_n wherein_o the_o pure_a word_n of_o god_n and_o true_a religion_n flourish_v this_o great_a benefit_n he_o acknowledge_v and_o therefore_o he_o so_o rejoice_v and_o magnify_v his_o to_o hear_v he_o will_v not_o hear_v and_o yet_o we_o see_v that_o there_o be_v nothing_o more_o common_a than_o this_o impiety_n this_o horrible_a contempt_n this_o devilish_a loathe_n of_o the_o word_n of_o god_n amongst_o all_o sort_n of_o man_n the_o cause_n be_v for_o that_o we_o hear_v not_o the_o lord_n speak_v now_o unto_o we_o in_o his_o majesty_n as_o he_o speak_v in_o the_o mount_v sinai_n at_o what_o time_n the_o people_n be_v astonish_v &_o tremble_v at_o the_o terrible_a voice_n of_o the_o lord_n &_o yet_o how_o soon_o have_v they_o forget_v the_o lord_n and_o murmur_v both_o against_o the_o lord_n and_o against_o moses_n thus_o in_o his_o majesty_n he_o speak_v no_o more_o but_o he_o speak_v now_o unto_o we_o by_o man_n and_o therefore_o he_o be_v contemn_v horrible_a it_o be_v that_o sodom_n be_v burn_v up_o with_o fire_n from_o heaven_n horrible_a it_o be_v also_o that_o the_o whole_a world_n be_v destroy_v with_o water_n moreover_o the_o daily_a example_n of_o impiety_n and_o wickedness_n as_o murder_v whoredom_n etc_n etc_n be_v such_o that_o they_o can_v not_o be_v hear_v without_o horror_n &_o tremble_a but_o how_o horrible_a so_o ever_o all_o these_o thing_n be_v yet_o be_v it_o much_o more_o horrible_a to_o contemn_v god_n when_o by_o his_o word_n he_o speak_v unto_o we_o which_o all_o the_o world_n do_v at_o this_o day_n not_o only_o they_o which_o persecute_v the_o word_n with_o open_a tyranny_n but_o such_o also_o as_o be_v even_o amongst_o we_o &_o at_o the_o beginning_n seem_v to_o receive_v this_o doctrine_n with_o great_a rejoice_v wherefore_o david_n exhort_v
we_o in_o this_o psalm_n with_o thankfulness_n to_o acknowledge_v this_o singular_a benefit_n of_o the_o word_n and_o to_o beware_v of_o the_o horrible_a contempt_n thereof_o how_o much_o better_a be_v it_o to_o suffer_v pestilence_n famine_n and_o the_o sword_n how_o much_o more_o tolerable_a for_o david_n to_o become_v both_o a_o adulterer_n and_o a_o murderer_n so_o that_o there_o remain_v a_o reverence_n to_o the_o word_n which_o repentance_n necessary_o bring_v with_o it_o then_o to_o fall_v so_o far_o as_o to_o contemn_v the_o word_n for_o this_o be_v to_o heap_v wrath_n upon_o wrath_n like_v as_o it_o be_v to_o heap_v grace_n upon_o grace_n with_o david_n to_o hold_v fast_o the_o word_n and_o withal_o to_o acknowledge_v the_o great_a benefit_n thereof_o to_o be_v brief_a like_a as_o there_o be_v no_o great_a joy_n and_o felicity_n to_o the_o godly_a then_o to_o hear_v and_o to_o know_v the_o voice_n of_o god_n speak_v unto_o they_o offer_v grace_n peace_n remission_n of_o sin_n and_o life_n everlasting_a so_o can_v there_o be_v to_o they_o no_o great_a cross_n than_o the_o contempt_n of_o the_o word_n for_o what_o do_v thou_o else_o but_o contemn_v god_n himself_o yea_o crucify_v again_o the_o son_n of_o god_n and_o tread_v thy_o saviour_n under_o thy_o foot_n when_o thou_o contemn_v the_o word_n of_o god_n which_o for_o thy_o salvation_n be_v reveil_v &_o offer_v unto_o thou_o no_o mortal_a man_n can_v abide_v such_o intolerable_a contempt_n as_o the_o lord_n our_o god_n continual_o suffer_v for_o he_o be_v patient_a and_o will_v that_o we_o shall_v convert_v and_o repent_v but_o he_o pay_v home_o at_o the_o length_n as_o we_o may_v see_v by_o the_o fall_n of_o the_o synagogue_n and_o the_o destruction_n of_o jerusalem_n for_o christ_n plain_o show_v that_o the_o cause_n of_o such_o horrible_a calamity_n be_v for_o that_o they_o do_v not_o know_v the_o time_n of_o their_o visitation_n let_v we_o learn_v then_o by_o these_o example_n what_o a_o great_a blessing_n it_o be_v to_o hear_v the_o lord_n our_o god_n speak_v unto_o we_o and_o as_o a_o tender_a mother_n with_o her_o child_n most_o love_o talk_v with_o we_o for_o this_o be_v it_o which_o david_n mean_v when_o he_o speak_v of_o the_o ascend_a up_o of_o the_o tribe_n to_o jerusalem_n and_o to_o the_o house_n of_o the_o lord_n to_o testify_v unto_o israel_n that_o be_v there_o unto_o man_n likewise_o in_o the_o first_o psalm_n he_o say_v the_o wicked_a shall_v not_o stand_v in_o judgement_n that_o be_v they_o do_v not_o persevere_v and_o abide_v in_o the_o doctrine_n of_o doctrine_n concern_v grace_n faith_n work_n magistrate_n civil_a ordinance_n etc_n etc_n where_o this_o doctrine_n be_v there_o be_v the_o seat_n of_o judgement_n as_o we_o also_o may_v now_o glory_v of_o our_o church_n for_o the_o sincere_a doctrine_n whereby_o man_n be_v true_o teach_v out_o of_o the_o word_n concern_v grace_n sin_n righteousness_n faith_n work_n obedience_n to_o parent_n and_o congregation_n of_o the_o first_o bear_v which_o be_v write_v in_o heaven_n &_o to_o god_n the_o judge_n of_o all_o and_o to_o the_o spirit_n of_o just_a and_o perfect_a man_n and_o to_o jesus_n the_o these_o thing_n and_o earnest_o think_v upon_o they_o so_o this_o psalm_n be_v a_o prayer_n against_o the_o mighty_a rich_a and_o wealthy_a of_o the_o world_n which_o either_o cruel_o molest_v and_o vex_v or_o proud_o deride_v and_o contemn_v the_o godly_a as_o the_o last_o verse_n do_v declare_v and_o these_o be_v not_o only_o such_o as_o prefer_v wicked_a doctrine_n superstition_n &_o idolatry_n before_o the_o undefiled_a word_n of_o god_n but_o even_o such_o also_o as_o glory_v in_o the_o word_n and_o sound_a doctrine_n and_o will_v be_v count_v lover_n &_o favourer_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o partaker_n with_o we_o of_o the_o name_n and_o glory_n of_o christ_n of_o such_o there_o be_v a_o great_a number_n amongst_o the_o people_n of_o israel_n for_o they_o have_v the_o law_n sacrifice_n and_o ceremony_n institute_v by_o moses_n according_a to_o the_o word_n of_o god_n they_o have_v great_a plenty_n of_o prophet_n and_o godly_a teacher_n yet_o how_o they_o use_v they_o the_o story_n do_v declare_v when_o elisha_n send_v the_o son_n of_o a_o prophet_n unto_o jehu_n 9_o the_o other_o say_v wherefore_o come_v this_o mad_a fellow_n unto_o thou_o the_o psalm_n also_o &_o all_o everlasting_a incorruptible_a see_v all_o thing_n pierce_v all_o thing_n the_o prophet_n also_o call_v god_n here_o the_o inhabior_n of_o heaven_n to_o signify_v that_o the_o earth_n be_v full_a of_o the_o proud_a and_o scornful_a and_o that_o the_o godly_a be_v tread_v under_o foot_n of_o those_o that_o dwell_v upon_o the_o earth_n and_o be_v count_v the_o ouâ—swepings_n of_o the_o world_n and_o therefore_o he_o see_v none_o beside_o the_o lord_n and_o inhabior_n of_o heaven_n of_o who_o he_o may_v look_v for_o help_n and_o succour_v the_o great_a danger_n whereof_o the_o prophet_n complain_v be_v herein_o express_v in_o that_o he_o look_v about_o on_o every_o side_n and_o seek_v for_o succour_n can_v find_v none_o to_o help_v he_o but_o only_o the_o inhabior_n of_o heaven_n these_o thing_n make_v the_o tentation_n much_o more_o grievous_a and_o terrible_a and_o therefore_o he_o pray_v with_o such_o word_n in_o his_o tentation_n as_o perhaps_o he_o at_o that_o time_n do_v matter_n of_o faith_n not_o to_o trust_v unto_o that_o which_o the_o eye_n see_v but_o which_o the_o word_n offer_v and_o promise_v this_o one_o thing_n therefore_o be_v lack_v in_o we_o that_o we_o have_v not_o the_o eye_n of_o the_o spirit_n but_o we_o judge_v according_a to_o the_o eye_n and_o sense_n of_o the_o flesh_n for_o else_o we_o shall_v be_v no_o more_o afraid_a than_o they_o which_o we_o and_o work_v we_o in_o deed_n some_o sorrow_n but_o he_o can_v not_o move_v us._n this_o similitude_n seem_v to_o be_v take_v out_o of_o the_o story_n of_o helizeus_fw-la in_o the_o 2._o book_n of_o the_o king_n where_o the_o servant_n of_o helizeus_fw-la see_v the_o hill_n about_o he_o full_a of_o fiery_a chariote_n and_o horseman_n compass_n helizeus_fw-la round_a about_o and_o mighty_o defend_v he_o this_o succour_n which_o the_o servant_n of_o helizeus_fw-la see_v and_o the_o prophet_n believe_v when_o he_o see_v nothing_o be_v say_v the_o prophet_n round_o about_o all_o they_o which_o trust_v in_o the_o lord_n as_o also_o the_o 34._o psalm_n witness_v the_o angel_n of_o the_o lord_n pitch_v round_o about_o they_o that_o fear_v he_o but_o our_o eye_n be_v shut_v up_o and_o see_v not_o these_o miracle_n whereof_o notwithstanding_o we_o have_v daily_a experience_n this_o promise_n than_o will_v never_o deceive_v we_o only_o let_v we_o not_o deceive_v ourselves_o if_o well_o know_v though_o not_o â—nto_n i_o yet_o unto_o god_n therefore_o although_o satan_n break_v through_o the_o wall_n in_o one_o place_n yet_o shall_v he_o never_o be_v able_a utter_o to_o overthrow_v it_o altogether_o thus_o shall_v we_o think_v in_o our_o trouble_n and_o affliction_n and_o comfort_v ourselves_o with_o the_o good_a will_n of_o god_n but_o we_o be_v afraid_a when_o any_o trouble_n come_v and_o never_o feel_v that_o security_n which_o faith_n bring_v thus_o do_v we_o worthy_o suffer_v the_o punishment_n of_o our_o incredulity_n which_o we_o nourish_v within_o we_o although_o we_o be_v call_v away_o from_o it_o by_o so_o many_o notable_a place_n of_o the_o scripture_n beside_o all_o this_o it_o be_v not_o enough_o that_o we_o be_v compass_v about_o with_o fiery_a wall_n that_o be_v with_o the_o sure_a custody_n the_o continual_a watch_n and_o ward_n of_o the_o angel_n but_o the_o lord_n himself_o be_v our_o wall_n so_o that_o every_o way_n we_o be_v defend_v by_o the_o lord_n against_o all_o danger_n above_o we_o he_o be_v a_o heaven_n on_o both_o side_n he_o be_v as_o a_o wall_n under_o we_o he_o be_v as_o a_o strong_a rock_n whereupon_o we_o stand_v so_o be_v we_o every_o way_n sure_a and_o safe_a now_o if_o satan_n through_o these_o munition_n cast_v his_o dart_n at_o we_o it_o must_v needs_o be_v that_o the_o lord_n himself_o shall_v be_v hurt_v before_o we_o take_v harm_n but_o great_a be_v our_o incredulity_n which_o hear_v all_o these_o thing_n in_o vain_a yet_o must_v they_o be_v teach_v and_o learn_v lest_o the_o time_n come_v that_o we_o be_v destitute_a of_o all_o counsel_n and_o comfort_n in_o these_o matter_n for_o certain_a it_o be_v that_o the_o hour_n shall_v come_v when_o we_o must_v have_v experience_n of_o these_o thing_n or_o else_o utter_o perish_v where_o he_o add_v from_o henceforth_o &_o for_o ever_o by_o these_o word_n he_o show_v that_o this_o vigilancy_n of_o the_o lord_n our_o god_n ever_o we_o be_v not_o temporal_a but_o eternal_a according_a to_o that_o which_o he_o say_v before_o in_o the_o first_o verse_n of_o this_o psalm_n they_o shall_v remain_v for_o ever_o let_v we_o learn_v therefore_o out_o of_o this_o psalm_n that_o our_o constancy_n and_o perseverance_n consist_v in_o this_o that_o we_o be_v defend_v by_o the_o power_n and_o providence_n of_o the_o lord_n on_o every_o side_n verse_n 3._o for_o the_o rod_n of_o the_o wicked_a shall_v not_o rest_v on_o the_o lot_n of_o the_o righteous_a lest_o the_o righteous_a put_v forth_o their_o hand_n unto_o wickedness_n here_o look_v towards_o that_o place_n as_o before_o we_o have_v declare_v but_o they_o turn_v their_o face_n also_o that_o way_n when_o they_o pray_v because_o god_n have_v promise_v that_o he_o will_v man_n and_o the_o whole_a world_n but_o beside_o these_o give_v remission_n of_o sin_n faith_n righteousness_n joy_n &_o peace_n of_o heart_n with_o everlasting_a life_n he_o be_v say_v the_o prophet_n my_o almighty_a and_o sure_a help_n of_o who_o i_o can_v not_o doubt_v that_o he_o will_v ever_o fail_v i_o the_o twinkle_n of_o a_o eye_n to_o this_o lord_n i_o fly_v for_o aid_n &_o herewithal_o be_v add_v that_o joyful_a promise_n of_o the_o eternal_a posterity_n of_o david_n and_o his_o true_a son_n christ_n 2._o reg._n 7._o david_n therefore_o in_o this_o psalm_n as_o it_o truth_n on_o every_o side_n which_o can_v be_v content_a rather_o to_o have_v the_o turk_n to_o reign_v over_o they_o yea_o the_o devil_n himself_o and_o all_o the_o fury_n of_o hell_n then_o to_o see_v we_o prosper_v and_o the_o gospel_n to_o flourish_v lest_o their_o curse_a work_n of_o darkness_n and_o infidelity_n shall_v appear_v unto_o the_o world_n verse_n 7._o peace_n be_v within_o of_o they_o both_o this_o be_v the_o cause_n why_o there_o be_v such_o a_o multitude_n of_o false_a prophet_n rebel_n &_o seditious_a person_n amongst_o this_o people_n as_o the_o story_n do_v testify_v wherefore_o david_n be_v teach_v by_o his_o own_o experience_n pray_v for_o these_o 2._o thing_n without_o the_o which_o the_o world_n be_v nothing_o else_o but_o a_o wild_a desert_n whereby_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o they_o be_v not_o able_a to_o resist_v most_o manifest_a impiety_n which_o by_o the_o strong_a &_o mighty_a delusion_n of_o the_o devil_n overflow_v the_o world_n as_o in_o pilgrimage_n where_o they_o maintain_v most_o damnable_a idolatry_n and_o cause_v the_o people_n to_o adore_v the_o work_n of_o their_o own_o hand_n and_o if_o any_o man_n speak_v against_o they_o he_o be_v up_o and_o by_o take_v and_o burn_v as_o a_o heretic_n so_o true_a be_v it_o that_o when_o the_o word_n be_v once_o lose_v the_o world_n remain_v in_o most_o horrible_a darkness_n and_o can_v do_v nothing_o else_o but_o abuse_v the_o gift_n of_o god_n and_o so_o fall_v to_o most_o detestable_a impiety_n or_o else_o to_o desperation_n this_o david_n foresee_v and_o therefore_o he_o pray_v so_o earnest_o for_o the_o prosperity_n of_o jerusalem_n for_o faithful_a pastor_n in_o the_o church_n and_o godly_a prince_n in_o the_o politic_a state_n verse_n 8._o for_o my_o brethren_n and_o neighbour_n sake_n i_o will_v wish_v thou_o now_o prosperity_n here_o david_n show_v the_o cause_n as_o he_o do_v also_o in_o the_o verse_n follow_v why_o he_o pray_v thus_o understand_v this_o psalm_n to_o be_v write_v against_o pride_n and_o presumption_n pride_n but_o in_o my_o judgement_n it_o may_v be_v more_o apt_o apply_v unto_o the_o spiritual_a pride_n of_o man_n own_o righteousness_n for_o as_o before_o i_o have_v say_v these_o three_o thing_n make_v man_n proud_a wisdom_n power_n &_o righteousness_n you_o may_v therefore_o if_o you_o listen_v make_v three_o kind_n of_o pride_n according_a to_o these_o three_o object_n for_o they_o be_v gift_n of_o god_n distribute_v unto_o man_n and_o have_v their_o measure_n and_o their_o mean_a appoint_a unto_o they_o
