thanks_o unto_o the_o lord_n because_o he_o be_v good_a for_o his_o mercy_n endure_v for_o ever_o towards_o israel_n and_o beside_o all_o these_o instance_n of_o form_n of_o prayer_n appoint_v by_o god_n in_o the_o old_a testament_n we_o have_v a_o very_a considerable_a one_o in_o the_o new_a and_o that_o be_v the_o lord_n prayer_n which_o in_o luke_n 11._o 2._o our_o saviour_n thus_o prescribe_v when_o you_o pray_v say_v our_o father_n etc._n etc._n in_o which_o he_o do_v as_o express_o enjoin_v they_o the_o use_n of_o that_o form_n of_o word_n as_o be_v possible_a for_o he_o to_o do_v in_o any_o humane_a language_n for_o if_o he_o have_v say_v when_o you_o pray_v say_v or_o use_v this_o form_n of_o word_n it_o can_v not_o have_v be_v more_o expressive_a of_o his_o intention_n to_o impose_v it_o as_o a_o form_n than_o his_o bid_v they_o when_o they_o pray_v to_o say_v our_o father_n and_o if_o we_o will_v not_o admit_v that_o to_o be_v the_o sense_n of_o a_o text_n which_o the_o word_n of_o it_o do_v as_o plain_o signify_v as_o they_o can_v have_v do_v if_o it_o be_v we_o have_v no_o way_n to_o determine_v the_o sense_n of_o any_o scripture_n but_o may_v eternal_o play_v upon_o the_o plain_a word_n of_o it_o with_o quirk_n of_o wit_n and_o fancy_n but_o it_o be_v object_v by_o our_o brethren_n that_o in_o matth._n 6._o 9_o where_o our_o saviour_n also_o deliver_v this_o prayer_n to_o the_o disciple_n instead_o of_o bid_v they_o say_v our_o father_n he_o only_o bid_v they_o pray_v after_o this_o manner_n our_o father_n etc._n etc._n which_o be_v a_o plain_a argument_n say_v they_o that_o he_o give_v it_o to_o they_o not_o as_o a_o form_n but_o as_o a_o pattern_n and_o directory_n of_o prayer_n to_o which_o i_o answer_v 1._o that_o where_o the_o same_o matter_n be_v mention_v ambiguous_o in_o one_o text_n and_o plain_o and_o express_o in_o another_o it_o be_v a_o necessary_a rule_n of_o interpretation_n that_o the_o sense_n of_o the_o doubtful_a and_o ambiguous_a text_n shall_v be_v determine_v by_o the_o word_n of_o the_o plain_a and_o express_v text._n now_o it_o be_v plain_a that_o 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d pray_v thus_o be_v of_o a_o doubtful_a signification_n and_o may_v as_o well_o denote_v pray_v in_o these_o word_n as_o after_o this_o pattern_n and_o direction_n and_o he_o who_o be_v bid_v to_o pray_v thus_o obey_v the_o command_n whether_o he_o pray_v for_o the_o same_o thing_n in_o other_o or_o in_o the_o same_o word_n so_o that_o have_v our_o saviour_n express_v himself_o in_o no_o other_o word_n but_o these_o it_o may_v have_v be_v doubtful_a whether_o he_o mean_v to_o prescribe_v it_o as_o a_o form_n or_o as_o a_o directory_n of_o prayer_n but_o say_v our_o father_n be_v plain_o and_o express_o say_v these_o word_n our_o father_n and_o he_o who_o be_v bid_v to_o say_v such_o word_n disobey_v the_o command_n though_o he_o shall_v say_v the_o same_o thing_n in_o other_o word_n so_o that_o have_v our_o saviour_n express_v himself_o in_o no_o other_o word_n but_o these_o there_o can_v have_v be_v no_o doubt_n but_o that_o his_o meaning_n be_v to_o prescribe_v those_o word_n for_o a_o form_n of_o prayer_n unless_o we_o can_v have_v suppose_v that_o by_o this_o injunction_n say_v our_o father_n we_o be_v not_o oblige_v to_o say_v our_o father_n and_o how_o can_v we_o have_v suppose_v that_o without_o high_a presumption_n have_v it_o not_o be_v for_o this_o pretence_n of_o 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d pray_v thus_o since_o therefore_o pray_v thus_o be_v a_o doubtful_a expression_n it_o be_v very_o reasonable_a it_o shall_v be_v interpret_v by_o say_v our_o father_n which_o be_v a_o plain_a and_o determinate_a one_o and_o if_o so_o the_o sense_n of_o both_o must_v be_v this_o when_o you_o pray_v use_v this_o form_n of_o word_n which_o i_o here_o prescribe_v you_o our_o father_n etc._n etc._n 2_o i_o answer_v that_o our_o saviour_n give_v not_o this_o prayer_n to_o his_o disciple_n after_o the_o manner_n of_o a_o directory_n but_o after_o the_o manner_n of_o a_o form_n of_o prayer_n have_v he_o give_v it_o to_o they_o mere_o as_o a_o direction_n what_o they_o be_v to_o pray_v for_o in_o all_o probability_n he_o will_v have_v express_v himself_o after_o another_o manner_n and_o instead_o of_o bid_v they_o say_v our_o father_n or_o pray_v thus_o our_o father_n he_o will_v have_v bid_v they_o call_v upon_o god_n by_o the_o name_n of_o their_o heavenly_a father_n and_o beseech_v he_o to_o cause_v his_o name_n to_o be_v glorify_v and_o hallow_v in_o the_o world_n and_o his_o kingdom_n to_o spread_v and_o advance_v etc._n etc._n instead_o of_o which_o he_o give_v they_o a_o form_a prayer_n and_o bid_v they_o say_v it_o and_o therefore_o since_o he_o give_v it_o to_o they_o after_o the_o manner_n of_o a_o form_n and_o not_o after_o the_o manner_n of_o a_o directory_n and_o since_o we_o may_v reasonable_o suppose_v that_o he_o intend_v they_o shall_v use_v it_o after_o the_o same_o manner_n in_o which_o he_o give_v it_o it_o follow_v that_o he_o give_v it_o to_o they_o to_o be_v use_v as_o a_o form_n and_o not_o mere_o as_o a_o pattern_n or_o directory_n 3_o lie_n i_o answer_v that_o suppose_v that_o when_o he_o bid_v they_o pray_v thus_o in_o the_o six_o of_o st._n matthew_n he_o prescribe_v it_o only_o as_o a_o directory_n for_o prayer_n yet_o it_o do_v not_o follow_v but_o that_o when_o he_o bid_v they_o say_v our_o father_n in_o the_o 11_o of_o luke_n he_o may_v prescribe_v it_o as_o a_o form_n because_o it_o be_v not_o the_o same_o prescription_n in_o both_o but_o different_a and_o give_v they_o at_o a_o different_a time_n and_o upon_o a_o different_a occasion_n the_o first_o be_v give_v they_o in_o the_o sermon_n upon_o the_o mount_n and_o in_o the_o second_o year_n after_o his_o baptism_n the_o second_o be_v give_v they_o upon_o their_o own_o request_n after_o he_o have_v do_v pray_v and_o in_o the_o three_o year_n after_o his_o baptism_n and_o whosoever_o shall_v consult_v both_o place_n will_v soon_o be_v convince_v that_o the_o lord_n prayer_n in_o st._n luke_n be_v deliver_v at_o another_o time_n and_o upon_o a_o quite_o different_a occasion_n from_o that_o in_o st._n matthew_n it_o be_v high_o probable_a therefore_o that_o the_o disciple_n when_o it_o be_v deliver_v in_o st._n matthew_n look_v upon_o it_o mere_o as_o give_v they_o by_o way_n of_o a_o directory_n or_o copy_n by_o which_o they_o be_v to_o frame_v and_o compose_v their_o prayer_n for_o if_o they_o have_v think_v it_o give_v they_o as_o a_o form_n of_o prayer_n it_o be_v not_o imaginable_a why_o they_o shall_v request_v he_o to_o teach_v they_o a_o form_n to_o pray_v by_o again_o when_o he_o have_v teach_v they_o one_o before_o either_o therefore_o their_o request_n in_o st._n luke_n must_v be_v very_o impertinent_a or_o it_o must_v be_v to_o desire_v he_o to_o teach_v they_o something_o more_o
have_v bring_v yourself_o to_o much_o liberty_n i_o doubt_v not_o you_o will_v find_v that_o you_o be_v in_o a_o wrong_a way_n and_o therefore_o resolve_v to_o alter_v it_o and_o come_v into_o the_o way_n of_o the_o church_n where_o if_o you_o do_v not_o meet_v present_o with_o such_o advantage_n for_o your_o spiritual_a growth_n as_o you_o be_v tell_v you_o may_v receive_v you_o have_v reason_n yet_o you_o shall_v hereafter_o if_o you_o seek_v it_o here_o with_o a_o honest_a heart_n viii_o and_o the_o preach_n of_o god_n holy_a word_n among_o we_o will_v be_v of_o great_a efficacy_n upon_o your_o heart_n if_o when_o you_o come_v to_o partake_v of_o it_o you_o will_v remember_v and_o observe_v some_o rule_n deliver_v by_o the_o same_o author_n in_o another_o place_n lecture_n xxvi_o about_o the_o public_a worship_n of_o god_n which_o now_o alas_o be_v general_o neglect_v and_o therefore_o have_v need_n to_o be_v press_v for_o the_o dispose_n all_o man_n heart_n to_o profit_v by_o signification_n of_o the_o reverence_n that_o we_o bear_v to_o this_o place_n and_o that_o we_o do_v indeed_o account_v it_o the_o house_n of_o god_n which_o serious_a temper_n of_o mind_n and_o awful_a sense_n of_o god_n presence_n possess_v the_o mind_n will_v no_o doubt_n be_v a_o excellent_a preparation_n to_o receive_v benefit_n by_o the_o whole_a service_n of_o god_n as_o well_o as_o by_o the_o sermon_n for_o which_o end_n 2._o another_o rule_n be_v that_o we_o must_v all_o come_v to_o the_o begin_n of_o god_n public_a worship_n and_o carry_v till_o all_o be_v do_v yea_o it_o be_v the_o duty_n of_o god_n people_n say_v he_o to_o be_v in_o god_n house_n before_o the_o beginning_n for_o it_o become_v they_o to_o wait_v for_o the_o minister_n of_o god_n and_o not_o to_o let_v he_o any_o other_o which_o be_v the_o reason_n why_o the_o apostle_n even_o after_o christ_n ascension_n when_o the_o typical_a honour_n of_o the_o temple_n be_v abolish_v etc._n etc._n be_v so_o delight_v to_o go_v to_o the_o temple_n to_o pray_v at_o the_o time_n of_o public_a prayer_n 1._o act._n 3._o etc._n etc._n and_o so_o he_o go_v on_o to_o show_v how_o by_o hear_v the_o word_n read_v all_o may_v profit_v and_o by_o hear_v it_o preach_v even_o by_o the_o mean_a minister_n of_o christ_n if_o the_o fault_n be_v not_o in_o themselves_o how_o the_o sing_n of_o psalm_n also_o further_v the_o fruit_n of_o the_o word_n in_o the_o heart_n of_o believer_n and_o much_o more_o benefit_n may_v the_o faithful_a receive_v by_o the_o sacrament_n of_o the_o lord_n supper_n nay_o by_o be_v present_a at_o the_o administration_n of_o baptism_n all_o may_v receive_v profit_n be_v put_v in_o mind_n there-by_a of_o the_o covenant_n god_n make_v with_o they_o in_o baptism_n etc._n etc._n last_o by_o the_o blessing_n pronounce_v by_o god_n minister_n all_o may_v receive_v good_a and_o therefore_o none_o ought_v to_o absent_v himself_o from_o any_o part_n of_o the_o public_a service_n of_o god_n for_o which_o his_o second_o reason_n be_v very_o remarkable_a that_o though_o we_o can_v receive_v no_o profit_n by_o the_o exercise_n use_v in_o our_o assembly_n yet_o we_o must_v be_v present_a at_o they_o all_o to_o do_v our_o homage_n unto_o god_n and_o show_v the_o reverend_a respect_n we_o have_v to_o his_o ordinance_n for_o there_o be_v nothing_o do_v in_o god_n public_a worship_n to_o be_v perform_v by_o the_o congregation_n as_o if_o the_o whole_a congregation_n be_v but_o one_o man._n and_o in_o several_a place_n he_o reprove_v with_o a_o great_a deal_n of_o zeal_n man_n great_a carelessness_n in_o this_o particular_o their_o neglect_n of_o kneel_v in_o the_o prayer_n have_v observe_v that_o man_n who_o will_v kneel_v at_o their_o own_o private_a prayer_n can_v never_o be_v see_v to_o kneel_v at_o the_o common_a and_o public_a prayer_n his_o last_o general_a rule_n be_v that_o we_o ought_v to_o teach_v our_o child_n and_o servant_n to_o show_v reverence_n to_o the_o sanctuary_n and_o public_a worship_n of_o god_n for_o god_n can_v endure_v profaneness_n and_o contempt_n of_o religion_n no_o not_o in_o child_n and_o it_o stand_v we_o all_o upon_o to_o
