whisperer_n backbiter_n etc._n etc._n and_o how_o sad_a a_o thing_n be_v it_o that_o any_o of_o these_o evil_n shall_v be_v find_v in_o saint_n in_o person_n profess_v godliness_n but_o the_o question_n be_v wherein_o do_v the_o evil_a and_o heinousness_n of_o this_o sin_n appear_v that_o it_o be_v rank_v among_o these_o other_o hateful_a sin_n the_o answer_n be_v this_o sin_n be_v very_o maintain_v discourse_n though_o to_o little_a purpose_n be_v often_o meddle_v with_o other_o man_n matter_n or_o three_o it_o be_v occasion_v sometime_o through_o a_o disposition_n in_o man_n to_o boast_v and_o vaunt_v and_o to_o speak_v of_o other_o weakness_n to_o render_v themselves_o to_o be_v the_o more_o excel_v in_o part_n or_o in_o virtue_n or_o in_o zeal_n or_o courage_n or_o faithfulness_n etc._n etc._n now_o as_o it_o be_v occasion_v either_o of_o those_o way_n much_o evil_n attend_v it_o for_o if_o it_o be_v occasion_v through_o discontent_n and_o discord_n between_o any_o than_o he_o that_o be_v the_o backbiter_n be_v under_o a_o great_a temptation_n to_o render_v the_o action_n or_o word_n of_o the_o man_n who_o he_o backbites_a much_o otherwise_o and_o much_o worse_a than_o they_o will_v appear_v to_o be_v when_o a_o man_n be_v present_a to_o make_v his_o defence_n for_o the_o very_a alteration_n of_o a_o word_n may_v make_v a_o matter_n seem_v much_o worse_a than_o indeed_o it_o be_v or_o the_o leave_v out_o or_o the_o not_o tell_v some_o part_n of_o a_o man_n word_n but_o leave_v out_o some_o material_a word_n may_v also_o do_v the_o like_a or_o alter_v the_o case_n and_o may_v render_v the_o backbiter_n very_o worthy_a and_o honourable_a and_o the_o backbite_v a_o very_a unworthy_a and_z and_o unlovely_a person_n in_o the_o thought_n of_o they_o that_o hear_v it_o if_o they_o have_v so_o little_a prudence_n or_o wisdom_n or_o so_o little_a justice_n or_o honesty_n as_o to_o take_v up_o those_o report_n or_o to_o receive_v or_o believe_v they_o before_o they_o hear_v the_o party_n that_o be_v backbite_v to_o make_v his_o own_o defence_n and_o these_o be_v the_o evil_n that_o in_o this_o case_n where_o there_o be_v heart-rising_n between_o two_o party_n for_o any_o offence_n give_v or_o take_v do_v attend_v backbiting_a and_o tale-barâ—ing_a 1._o lie_v 2._o slander_v 3._o unrighteousness_n and_o deceitfulness_n 4._o malignity_n and_o envy_n 5._o a_o sow_v of_o discord_n 6._o great_a injuriousness_n for_o in_o the_o alteration_n of_o a_o man_n word_n he_o that_o report_v they_o with_o alteration_n of_o they_o tell_v ally_v for_o the_o man_n speak_v not_o so_o and_o in_o leave_v out_o of_o something_n and_o make_v addicioâ—s_n and_o alteration_n either_o upon_o mistake_n or_o forgetfulness_n or_o wilfulness_n man_n do_v often_o slander_v their_o brethren_n and_o cast_v such_o a_o odium_fw-la upon_o they_o as_o ought_v not_o to_o be_v cast_v and_o herein_o they_o be_v unjust_a unrighteous_a and_o deceitful_a and_o oftentimes_o malignity_n and_o spleen_n and_o envy_n be_v therein_o manifest_v and_o oftentimes_o this_o tale-bearing_a and_o speak_v to_o the_o defame_n reproach_v and_o undervalue_v of_o a_o man_n behind_o his_o back_n do_v â—eget_v ill_a blood_n in_o the_o party_n that_o hear_v it_o and_o sometime_o make_v a_o man_n that_o be_v a_o dear_a and_o intimate_a friend_n to_o such_o a_o man_n to_o become_v strange_a to_o he_o it_o sepaâ—ateth_v chief_a friend_n and_o herein_o beside_o in_o other_o respect_n which_o may_v be_v mention_v the_o backbiter_n be_v very_o injurious_a unto_o he_o that_o he_o backbites_a and_o all_o these_o evil_n be_v common_a with_o backbiter_n and_o whisperer_n that_o be_v such_o person_n as_o be_v apt_a to_o take_v a_o liberty_n to_o speak_v any_o thing_n at_o any_o time_n to_o the_o defame_n undervalue_v or_o disparage_v a_o man_n behind_o his_o back_n i_o say_v it_o be_v common_a for_o back_o biter_n to_o be_v liar_n slanderer_n unrighteous_a deceitful_a etc._n etc._n yea_o though_o in_o other_o respect_v the_o backbiter_n may_v be_v good_a man_n and_o good_a woman_n and_o such_o as_o tru_o fear_v and_o love_v the_o lord_n yet_o in_o be_v backbiters_a and_o take_v a_o liberty_n to_o speak_v any_o thing_n that_o tend_v to_o the_o defame_n of_o other_o behind_o their_o back_n they_o do_v often_o therein_o appear_v to_o be_v liar_n slanderer_n unrighteous_a deceitful_a injurious_a etc._n etc._n yea_o though_o the_o person_n that_o do_v backbite_v do_v little_o think_v themselves_o to_o be_v so_o but_o think_v themselves_o to_o be_v very_o just_a and_o very_o righteous_a and_o that_o they_o aâ—hor_v to_o tell_v a_o lie_n or_o to_o slander_v any_o or_o to_o be_v any_o way_n injurious_a yea_o they_o think_v they_o loathe_v such_o thing_n but_o herein_o their_o own_o heart_n deceive_v they_o and_o they_o be_v deceive_v and_o though_o either_o they_o know_v not_o or_o think_v not_o or_o be_v not_o willing_a to_o think_v that_o they_o be_v deceive_v yet_o they_o be_v deceive_v and_o deceive_v other_o and_o the_o more_o eminent_a such_o person_n be_v for_o the_o good_a and_o the_o worth_n that_o appear_v in_o they_o in_o other_o respect_n the_o more_o they_o deceive_v the_o person_n to_o who_o they_o speak_v for_o they_o will_v be_v ready_a to_o think_v this_o be_v a_o good_a man_n or_o a_o good_a woman_n that_o speak_v these_o thing_n and_o they_o will_v not_o report_v thus_o if_o it_o be_v not_o so_o whereas_o if_o it_o be_v a_o loose_a person_n or_o a_o vile_a person_n that_o speak_v it_o their_o word_n will_v not_o be_v take_v up_o or_o credit_v so_o soon_o they_o can_v not_o so_o easy_o deceive_v the_o hearer_n and_o again_o if_o a_o man_n be_v a_o backbiter_n not_o upon_o the_o account_n of_o any_o offence_n give_v or_o take_v but_o mere_o through_o a_o disposition_n to_o prattle_v &_o taâ—â—le_n to_o be_v very_o talkative_a and_o full_a of_o word_n and_o a_o love_n to_o hear_v himself_o talk_v among_o company_n of_o which_o disposition_n woman_n usual_o be_v more_o guilty_a than_o man_n though_o some_o man_n be_v too_o guilty_a of_o it_o herein_o also_o the_o backbiter_n do_v become_v very_o guilty_a of_o lie_v and_o slander_v unrighteousness_n and_o deceitfulness_n and_o sow_v discord_n
and_o injuriousness_n for_o these_o praâ—lers_n and_o taâ—lers_n do_v either_o speak_v something_o they_o have_v hear_v from_o other_o tatler_n or_o tale-bearer_n or_o something_o which_o they_o conjecture_v or_o imagine_v from_o such_o and_o such_o circumstance_n or_o from_o seem_a ground_n or_o from_o mistake_n or_o misâ—pprehensâ—ons_n which_o they_o have_v in_o themselves_o or_o have_v â—eceived_v from_o other_o in_o which_o they_o think_v they_o have_v very_o strong_a ground_n for_o what_o they_o repoâ—t_v all_o which_o be_v examine_v may_v be_v no_o ground_n for_o such_o report_n and_o so_o in_o all_o these_o thing_n the_o talebearer_n that_o speak_v any_o thing_n that_o tend_v to_o the_o defame_n of_o a_o person_n not_o present_a be_v oftentimes_o a_o great_a liar_n and_o slanderer_n and_o be_v very_o unrighteous_a and_o unjust_a and_o be_v a_o sour_a of_o discord_n and_o be_v very_o injurious_a for_o it_o be_v very_o frequent_a for_o person_n that_o tell_v tale_n or_o report_n of_o thing_n which_o they_o have_v hear_v from_o other_o to_o make_v addition_n and_o alteration_n either_o through_o badness_n of_o memory_n or_o delight_n in_o many_o word_n or_o both_o for_o some_o can_v remember_v thing_n exact_o and_o they_o speak_v at_o random_n and_o other_o love_v many_o word_n and_o have_v a_o faculty_n to_o stretch_v thing_n beyond_o what_o they_o be_v and_o most_o be_v subject_a to_o mistake_v word_n and_o when_o one_o word_n be_v take_v for_o another_o or_o a_o sentence_n be_v take_v to_o have_v another_o meaning_n than_o be_v intend_v it_o much_o alter_v the_o caâ—e_n and_o on_o these_o account_v many_o mischief_n and_o evil_n have_v attend_v this_o kind_n of_o talebear_v also_o when_o person_n out_o of_o a_o desire_n to_o prattle_v and_o for_o want_v of_o better_a discourse_n do_v take_v that_o sinful_a liberty_n to_o speak_v thing_n which_o tend_v to_o the_o defame_n and_o undervalue_v of_o other_o wherein_o they_o have_v be_v guilty_a of_o much_o evil_n and_o have_v great_o wrong_v their_o own_o soul_n and_o so_o also_o when_o through_o a_o disposition_n to_o vaunt_v and_o boast_v and_o â—ender_v â—_o man_n self_n to_o be_v excel_v in_o part_n or_o in_o virtue_n or_o zeal_n or_o courage_n etc._n etc._n and_o to_o render_v another_o more_o mean_a or_o low_a and_o despicable_a or_o unworthy_a and_o to_o lessen_v the_o esleem_n that_o other_o have_v of_o they_o or_o of_o any_o work_n or_o worth_n of_o â—_z herein_o also_o such_o a_o backbiter_n be_v many_o time_n a_o heinous_a and_o grievous_a sinner_n in_o the_o forementioned_a particular_n and_o do_v prove_v to_o be_v also_o a_o proud_a boaster_n and_o evil_a doer_n in_o a_o high_a degree_n and_o by_o this_o time_n it_o do_v in_o part_n appear_v that_o the_o sin_n of_o backbiting_a be_v a_o heinous_a crime_n and_o it_o be_v no_o wonder_n that_o it_o be_v rank_v among_o the_o worst_a of_o sin_n but_o three_o as_o the_o scripture_n declare_v the_o sin_n
