close_v their_o eye_n judicial_o and_o say_v they_o shall_v not_o see_v see_v you_o shall_v see_v and_o not_o perceive_v and_o hear_v you_o shall_v hear_v and_o not_o understand_v 14_o the_o sower_n sow_v the_o word_n 15_o and_o these_o be_v they_o by_o the_o way_n side_n where_o the_o word_n be_v sow_o but_o when_o they_o have_v hear_v satan_n come_v immediate_o and_o take_v away_o the_o word_n that_o be_v sow_v in_o their_o heart_n 16_o and_o these_o be_v they_o likewise_o which_o be_v sow_o on_o stony_a ground_n who_o when_o they_o have_v hear_v the_o word_n immediate_o receive_v it_o with_o gladness_n 17_o and_o have_v no_o root_n in_o themselves_o and_o so_o endure_v but_o for_o a_o time_n afterward_o when_o affliction_n or_o persecution_n arise_v for_o the_o word_n sake_n thorny_a ground_n worldly_a and_o covetous_a desire_n be_v as_o thorn_n choke_v the_o good_a seed_n they_o shadow_v the_o blade_n when_o spring_v up_o keep_v off_o the_o influence_n of_o the_o sun_n and_o draw_v away_o the_o fatness_n of_o the_o soil_n from_o the_o seed_n all_o these_o mischievous_a effect_n have_v thorn_n among_o the_o seed_n and_o the_o like_a ill_a effect_n have_v worldly_a affection_n and_o covetous_a desire_n in_o the_o soul_n of_o man_n render_v the_o seed_n of_o the_o word_n unfruitful_a and_o unprofitable_a but_o the_o good_a christian_n hear_v the_o word_n attentive_o keep_v it_o retentive_o believe_v it_o stedfest_o apply_v it_o particular_o practise_v it_o universal_o and_o bring_v forth_o fruit_n persevere_o learn_v 1._o that_o no_o hearer_n be_v hence_o 1._o that_o the_o ministry_n of_o the_o word_n be_v the_o ordinary_a the_o necessary_a and_o the_o principal_a mean_n which_o god_n have_v appoint_v for_o sow_v the_o seed_n of_o grace_n in_o nature_n it_o have_v in_o it_o a_o active_a principle_n and_o will_v spring_v up_o if_o not_o kill_v by_o accidental_a injury_n such_o a_o quicken_a power_n have_v the_o word_n of_o god_n to_o regenerate_a and_o make_v alive_a dead_a soul_n if_o we_o suffer_v it_o to_o take_v root_a in_o our_o heart_n yet_o be_v not_o this_o seed_n alike_o fruitful_a in_o every_o soil_n all_o ground_n be_v not_o alike_o neither_o do_v the_o word_n fructify_v alike_o in_o the_o soul_n of_o man_n there_o be_v a_o difference_n both_o from_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o soil_n and_o the_o influence_n of_o the_o spirit_n for_o though_o no_o ground_n be_v natural_o good_a yet_o some_o be_v worse_a than_o other_o nay_o even_o the_o best_a ground_n do_v not_o bring_v forth_o increase_v alike_o some_o good_a ground_n bring_v forth_o a_o hundred_o fold_n other_o but_o sixty_o and_o some_o but_o thirty_o in_o like_a manner_n a_o christian_a may_v be_v a_o profitable_a hearer_n of_o the_o word_n our_o saviour_n answer_n to_o you_o it_o be_v give_v to_o know_v the_o mystery_n of_o the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n etc._n etc._n observe_v 1_o that_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o gospel_n be_v great_a mystery_n 2._o that_o it_o be_v a_o invaluable_a privilege_n right_o to_o understand_v and_o know_v gospel-mystery_n 3._o that_o this_o privilege_n all_o be_v not_o sharer_n in_o and_o partaker_n of_o but_o only_o those_o to_o who_o it_o be_v give_v 4._o that_o it_o be_v a_o righteous_a thing_n with_o god_n to_o give_v such_o person_n over_o to_o far_a blindness_n and_o ignorance_n in_o spiritual_a thing_n who_o wilful_o reject_v the_o truth_n and_o shut_v their_o eye_n against_o the_o evidence_n of_o it_o the_o pharisee_n have_v all_o along_o shut_v their_o eye_n and_o say_v they_o will_v not_o see_v and_o now_o christ_n close_v their_o eye_n judicial_o and_o say_v they_o shall_v not_o see_v 11_o now_o the_o parable_n be_v this_o the_o seed_n be_v the_o word_n of_o god_n 12_o those_o by_o their_o memory_n in_o their_o will_n or_o in_o their_o affection_n but_o they_o be_v instant_o offend_v either_o at_o the_o depth_n and_o profoundness_n of_o the_o word_n or_o at_o the_o sanctity_n and_o strictness_n of_o the_o word_n or_o else_o at_o the_o plainness_n and_o simplicity_n of_o it_o again_o some_o hearer_n our_o lord_n compare_v to_o thorny-ground_n worldly_n desire_n and_o inordinate_a care_n for_o the_o thing_n of_o this_o life_n choke_v the_o word_n as_o thorn_n overshadow_v the_o corn_n draw_v away_o the_o heart_n of_o the_o earth_n from_o it_o
the_o truth_n and_o desire_v to_o obey_v it_o the_o spirit_n give_v you_o a_o affective_a operative_a and_o experimental_a knowledge_n not_o bare_o to_o know_v these_o thing_n but_o to_o believe_v they_o and_o feel_v the_o power_n of_o they_o in_o and_z upon_o your_o own_o heart_n but_o the_o generality_n of_o hearer_n do_v satisfy_v and_o content_v themselves_o with_o a_o bare_a notional_a knowledge_n of_o what_o they_o hear_v a_o parable_n therefore_o be_v well_o enough_o for_o they_o learn_v 1._o that_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o gospel_n be_v mystery_n 2._o that_o it_o be_v a_o matchless_a and_o unvaluable_a privilege_n practical_o and_o save_o to_o understand_v and_o know_v gospel-mystery_n 3._o that_o this_o privilege_n all_o be_v not_o sharer_n in_o nor_o partaker_n of_o cavil_v at_o it_o our_o saviour_n tell_v they_o he_o have_v former_o speak_v thing_n very_o plain_o and_o clear_o to_o they_o and_o also_o wrought_v miracle_n before_o they_o to_o convince_v they_o of_o the_o divinity_n of_o his_o person_n and_o of_o the_o verity_n of_o his_o doctrine_n but_o they_o will_v not_o believe_v either_o his_o person_n or_o his_o doctrine_n to_o be_v from_o god_n and_o therefore_o he_o will_v now_o speak_v to_o they_o in_o dark_a parable_n that_o they_o may_v be_v judicial_o blind_v they_o shut_v their_o eye_n against_o the_o clear_a light_n and_o say_v they_o will_v not_o see_v and_o now_o christ_n close_v their_o eye_n and_o say_v they_o shall_v not_o see_v learn_v hence_o to_o acknowledge_v the_o divine_a justice_n which_o speak_v dark_o to_o they_o that_o despise_v the_o light_n such_o who_o see_v and_o yet_o see_v not_o they_o shall_v see_v the_o shell_n but_o not_o the_o kernel_n they_o shall_v hear_v the_o parable_n but_o not_o understand_v
