acceptable_a and_o holy_a will_n be_v but_o also_o to_o will_n and_o to_o do_v it_o for_o thus_o the_o faculty_n and_o ability_n of_o the_o soul_n which_o god_n have_v give_v it_o be_v most_o noble_o they_o have_v conceive_v and_o bear_v and_o suffer_v for_o so_o be_v it_o also_o natural_a to_o the_o soul_n to_o love_v its_o work_n which_o it_o have_v wrought_v in_o god_n and_o take_v delight_n or_o pleasure_n in_o they_o as_o god_n do_v in_o he_o and_o as_o the_o mother_n love_v she_o own_o child_n who_o she_o have_v conceive_v and_o bear_v and_o travel_v in_o great_a pang_n to_o bring_v forth_o into_o the_o world_n more_o than_o she_o love_v any_o other_o child_n who_o she_o have_v not_o bear_v although_o these_o other_o may_v be_v more_o beautify_v so_o the_o soul_n love_v and_o delight_v most_o in_o those_o work_n which_o it_o bring_v forth_o as_o the_o fruit_n of_o its_o womb_n through_o the_o assistance_n of_o god_n holy_a spirit_n and_o it_o be_v well_o allow_v of_o the_o lord_n so_o to_o do_v provide_v it_o be_v with_o due_a moderation_n for_o this_o be_v a_o part_n of_o our_o own_o reward_n even_o to_o rejoice_v in_o good_a work_n which_o the_o lord_n have_v enable_v we_o to_o perform_v but_o the_o praise_n be_v whole_o and_o alone_o to_o be_v give_v unto_o the_o lord_n for_o they_o all_o for_o he_o it_o be_v who_o have_v give_v to_o the_o soul_n its_o be_v and_o power_n and_o every_o ability_n both_o natural_a and_o spiritual_a so_o as_o without_o he_o it_o can_v not_o do_v any_o thing_n that_o be_v good_a neither_o spiritual_a nor_o natural_a they_o be_v therefore_o great_o mistake_v who_o think_v as_o some_o foolish_o and_o idle_o have_v do_v and_o print_v it_o against_o we_o that_o because_o we_o plead_v for_o the_o spirit_n immediate_a revelation_n that_o therefore_o we_o lay_v aside_o not_o only_o the_o use_n of_o the_o scripture_n and_o other_o outward_a mean_n and_o help_n but_o also_o the_o whole_a use_n of_o our_o reason_n and_o understanding_n as_o man_n and_o of_o any_o other_o faculty_n and_o ability_n of_o our_o soul_n and_o become_v as_o so_o many_o dead_a and_o unactive_a trunk_n stock_n or_o stone_n or_o as_o if_o we_o do_v judge_n that_o the_o divine_a revelation_n inspiration_n and_o motion_n of_o god_n holy_a spirit_n help_v we_o to_o know_v and_o understand_v divine_a thing_n to_o meditate_v to_o preach_v and_o pray_v and_o give_v thanks_o etc._n etc._n do_v pass_v through_o we_o as_o a_o sound_n pass_v through_o a_o hollow_a cave_n or_o as_o water_n through_o a_o bare_a conduit_n these_o and_o such_o like_a absurd_a consequence_n be_v but_o the_o idle_a and_o foolish_a dream_n of_o man_n vain_a imagination_n who_o as_o it_o too_o much_o appear_v have_v never_o have_v any_o experience_n of_o or_o acquaintance_n with_o the_o
he_o he_o depart_v from_o they_o in_o so_o far_o and_o remain_v still_o in_o his_o own_o freedom_n although_o such_o who_o seek_v to_o limit_v the_o spirit_n by_o use_v set_a form_n may_v and_o do_v quench_v the_o spirit_n as_o unto_o themselves_o but_o they_o think_v there_o be_v no_o limit_v or_o quench_v or_o grieve_v of_o the_o spirit_n in_o the_o case_n because_o they_o believe_v there_o be_v no_o such_o gift_n in_o the_o church_n remain_v since_o the_o primitive_a time_n as_o to_o be_v help_v by_o the_o spirit_n to_o pray_v in_o word_n either_o in_o the_o conceive_n or_o utter_v they_o they_o grant_v indeed_o so_o far_o the_o help_n and_o assistance_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o acknowledge_v it_o altogether_o necessary_a to_o pray_v acceptable_o unto_o god_n that_o the_o holy_a spirit_n stir_v up_o our_o desire_n and_o affection_n and_o excite_v in_o we_o his_o own_o grace_n and_o the_o do_v of_o this_o as_o they_o say_v be_v a_o sufficient_a help_v of_o we_o by_o there_o be_v no_o need_n of_o it_o either_o to_o help_v we_o to_o conceive_v word_n of_o prayer_n or_o excite_v our_o affection_n but_o that_o man_n by_o his_o free_a will_n help_v by_o the_o scripture_n without_o any_o immediate_a help_n of_o the_o spirit_n can_v pray_v sufficient_o both_o with_o good_a word_n and_o fervent_a affection_n and_o yet_o even_o these_o will_v say_v they_o be_v help_v by_o the_o grace_n of_o the_o spirit_n to_o wit_n mediate_o and_o remote_o by_o mean_n of_o the_o spirit_n again_o why_o do_v they_o limit_v and_o stint_v the_o help_n and_o operation_n of_o the_o spirit_n only_o to_o the_o will_n and_o affection_n and_o to_o exciting_a the_o grace_n of_o the_o spirit_n in_o we_o do_v not_o the_o spirit_n operate_v upon_o the_o understanding_n as_o well_o and_o as_o near_o and_o immediate_o and_o close_o as_o upon_o the_o will_n and_o affection_n be_v there_o not_o intellectual_a grace_n and_o gift_n of_o the_o spirit_n to_o wit_n such_o as_o proper_o conceive_v word_n at_o least_o in_o meditation_n or_o will_v they_o confine_v we_o to_o see_v ☞_o form_n of_o meditation_n as_o well_o as_o of_o vocal_a prayer_n i_o suppose_v not_o see_v no_o such_o set_a form_n be_v yet_o extant_a and_o they_o themselves_o take_v liberty_n to_o their_o meditation_n upon_o religious_a matter_n and_o preach_v to_o the_o people_n these_o say_a meditation_n and_o yet_o i_o suppose_v they_o will_v reckon_v at_o time_n the_o spirit_n help_v they_o to_o conceive_v these_o meditation_n which_o can_v be_v conceive_v without_o word_n and_o further_o the_o word_n of_o these_o set_a form_n of_o prayer_n whence_o come_v they_o have_v the_o spirit_n no_o influence_n upon_o the_o understanding_n of_o those_o man_n who_o conceive_v they_o to_o help_v and_o assist_v they_o in_o those_o conception_n if_o they_o say_v nay_o they_o will_v render_v the_o set_a form_n of_o prayer_n of_o small_a value_n what_o the_o people_n in_o that_o respect_n but_o if_o they_o say_v the_o spirit_n do_v help_v they_o to_o form_v these_o conception_n of_o the_o word_n of_o their_o set_a prayer_n than_o such_o a_o gift_n be_v not_o cease_v in_o the_o true_a church_n for_o it_o be_v in_o these_o man_n who_o pen_v and_o conceive_v those_o prayer_n it_o may_v as_o well_o be_v in_o man_n now_o to_o conceive_v other_o word_n of_o prayer_n but_o 4._o pray_v by_o a_o set_a form_n not_o only_o tend_v to_o limit_v and_o stint_v the_o spirit_n and_o quench_v it_o in_o regard_n of_o its_o operation_n but_o also_o it_o tend_v to_o make_v the_o understanding_n and_o divers_a other_o faculty_n and_o ability_n or_o power_n of_o our_o soul_n and_o the_o intellectual_a grace_n and_o virtue_n seat_v and_o plant_v in_o they_o altogether_o barren_a and_o unfruitful_a in_o respect_n of_o prayer_n which_o yet_o ought_v to_o exercise_v the_o understanding_n as_o much_o as_o any_o other_o thing_n as_o paul_n say_v i_o will_v pray_v with_o the_o spirit_n i_o will_v pray_v with_o the_o number_n of_o form_n of_o vegetable_n flower_n and_o fruit_n and_o not_o only_o so_o but_o to_o limit_v she_o as_o to_o length_n breadth_n and_o depth_n of_o each_o form_n which_o we_o know_v be_v a_o impossible_a thing_n for_o the_o form_n of_o all_o live_n and_o grow_v thing_n must_v have_v liberty_n to_o spring_v out_o from_o their_o respective_a seed_n principle_n and_o cause_n otherwise_o inward_a conception_n of_o word_n be_v as_o vain_a as_o to_o stint_v and_o determine_v all_o man_n to_o have_v one_o and_o the_o same_o form_n of_o visage_n or_o countenance_n and_o he_o who_o will_v go_v about_o to_o limit_v the_o figure_n of_o the_o child_n body_n and_o face_n in_o the_o mother_n womb_n to_o another_o shape_n and_o form_n than_o god_n and_o nature_n have_v design_v to_o have_v will_v do_v amiss_o and_o be_v occasion_n of_o cause_v the_o womb_n to_o miscarry_v and_o render_v it_o barren_a rather_o than_o any_o way_n to_o help_v it_o i_o know_v it_o be_v answer_v by_o some_o understanding_n and_o the_o intellectual_a grace_n seat_v therein_o in_o one_o respect_n be_v of_o a_o tendency_n to_o stop_v its_o fruitfulness_n and_o render_v it_o barren_a in_o other_o respect_n a_o woman_n that_o be_v with_o
child_n and_o have_v twin_n in_o her_o womb_n that_o be_v hard_o for_o to_o make_v she_o miscarry_v in_o the_o one_o but_o she_o will_v miscarry_v also_o in_o the_o other_o and_o he_o that_o seek_v be_v find_v by_o frequent_a experience_n that_o even_o in_o those_o long_o study_v and_o premeditate_a sermon_n many_o man_n have_v utter_v very_o impertinent_a and_o unsound_a yea_o false_a and_o hurtful_a word_n and_o expression_n for_o it_o be_v not_o much_o or_o long_a time_n to_o study_v or_o premeditate_v a_o discourse_n that_o make_v it_o good_a or_o soundp_n see_v they_o who_o err_v in_o their_o understanding_n and_o have_v receive_v or_o drink_v in_o wrong_n and_o false_a doctrine_n and_o principle_n of_o religion_n and_o wrong_v and_o false_a traditional_a gloss_n and_o interpretation_n of_o scripture_n may_v preach_v very_o unsound_a and_o erroneous_a sermon_n although_o they_o have_v take_v a_o long_a time_n to_o study_v and_o prepare_v they_o 2._o according_a to_o the_o former_a reply_n if_o man_n shall_v study_v beforehand_o their_o prayer_n as_o well_o as_o their_o sermon_n than_o they_o be_v in_o no_o great_a danger_n to_o speak_v impertinent_a and_o unsound_a word_n in_o prayer_n than_o in_o preach_v but_o rather_o they_o be_v less_o obnoxious_a to_o such_o a_o danger_n because_o in_o prayer_n man_n common_o do_v not_o meddle_v with_o matter_n of_o controversy_n or_o disputable_a point_n of_o doctrine_n as_o indeed_o it_o be_v not_o proper_a 3._o he_o who_o preach_v or_o pray_v by_o the_o true_a and_o real_a assistance_n of_o the_o holy_a spirit_n as_o he_o keep_v faithful_o and_o careful_o unto_o the_o same_o although_o what_o he_o do_v either_o preach_v or_o pray_v proceed_v from_o premeditation_n it_o be_v impossible_a that_o the_o mouth_n can_v utter_v any_o thing_n but_o the_o heart_n or_o mind_n of_o man_n must_v first_o conceive_v it_o which_o be_v a_o true_a and_o real_a kind_n of_o premeditation_n yet_o he_o need_v eth_z not_o any_o long_a time_n for_o the_o say_a premeditation_n for_o when_o his_o heart_n and_o soul_n be_v once_o well_o prepare_v and_o fit_v to_o be_v the_o instrument_n of_o the_o spirit_n whether_o in_o preach_v or_o pray_v ing_z etc._n etc._n the_o which_o preparation_n of_o the_o heart_n at_o time_n may_v require_v a_o considerable_a season_n long_o or_o short_a as_o the_o man_n be_v more_o or_o less_o grow_v up_o in_o virtue_n and_o holiness_n iâ—_n the_o least_o space_n of_o time_n imaginable_a as_o in_o moment_n or_o instant_n when_o it_o please_v the_o lord_n to_o assist_v the_o understanding_n by_o the_o divine_a influence_n of_o his_o spirit_n it_o can_v be_v and_o 〈◊〉_d be_v make_v fruitful_a to_o bring_v forth_o and_o conceive_v as_o many_o solid_a and_o live_a text_n and_o have_v the_o same_o subject_n of_o discourse_n if_o they_o shall_v both_o use_v the_o same_o form_n of_o word_n in_o kind_n and_o number_n without_o addition_n or_o diminition_n it_o will_v be_v general_o conclude_v that_o the_o one_o have_v steal_v his_o discourse_n from_o the_o other_o or_o at_o least_o borrow_a it_o and_o not_o conceive_v it_o from_o his_o own_o mind_n and_o understanding_n for_o as_o much_o as_o one_o man_n child_n differ_v from_o another_o in_o form_n and_o figure_n of_o body_n as_o much_o or_o rather_o more_o do_v the_o birth_n of_o his_o mind_n and_o understanding_n in_o conceive_v and_o utter_v the_o matter_n of_o his_o discourse_n differ_v from_o another_o yea_o as_o the_o child_n of_o one_o and_o the_o same_o father_n and_o mother_n though_o ever_o so_o many_o do_v considerable_o differ_v one_o from_o another_o in_o form_n and_o figure_n especial_o of_o the_o face_n so_o every_o man_n speech_n or_o discourse_n whether_o in_o preach_v or_o pray_v will_v somewhat_o differ_v one_o time_n from_o another_o if_o he_o bring_v it_o from_o his_o heart_n and_o understanding_n and_o not_o from_o his_o bare_a memory_n although_o the_o stile_n and_o manner_n of_o expression_n may_v be_v much_o the_o same_o and_o common_o those_o man_n who_o understanding_n be_v natural_o more_o pertinent_a and_o fruitful_a when_o they_o speak_v or_o write_v on_o the_o same_o matter_n or_o subject_n the_o form_n of_o their_o speech_n or_o write_n do_v most_o differ_v and_o so_o it_o may_v in_o prayer_n whereas_o other_o man_n who_o understanding_n be_v not_o so_o fruitful_a in_o word_n but_o they_o may_v be_v as_o fruitful_a and_o sometime_o more_o fruitful_a in_o good_a and_o holy_a affection_n when_o they_o preach_v or_o pray_v the_o form_n of_o their_o word_n and_o speech_n may_v seem_v to_o be_v well_o near_o the_o same_o though_o always_o there_o will_v be_v some_o difference_n as_o much_o as_o one_o child_n who_o be_v very_o like_a to_o his_o brother_n do_v differ_v from_o he_o or_o as_o one_o apple_n may_v be_v like_o another_o of_o the_o same_o tree_n and_o yet_o when_o narrow_o consider_v do_v still_o differ_v and_o here_o these_o last_o man_n prayer_n who_o heart_n and_o will_n be_v more_o fruitful_a in_o holy_a affection_n than_o their_o understanding_n be_v in_o great_a variety_n of_o word_n and_o eloquent_a expression_n may_v and_o oft_o do_v pray_v with_o more_o life_n and_o authority_n or_o power_n than_o the_o other_o because_o the_o main_a strength_n and_o force_n of_o prayer_n consist_v in_o the_o good_a and_o holy_a will_n and_o affection_n but_o in_o this_o and_o all_o other_o thing_n as_o every_o one_o have_v his_o proper_a gift_n one_o so_o and_o another_o otherwise_o so_o he_o be_v to_o exercise_v it_o
