there_o be_v three_o person_n in_o the_o godhead_n not_o as_o we_o speak_v in_o our_o common_a speech_n call_v three_o man_n three_o person_n or_o else_o as_o in_o the_o popedom_n they_o will_v be_v so_o bold_a as_o to_o point_v three_o puppet_n or_o monkey_n and_o say_v lo_o the_o trinity_n but_o this_o word_n person_n in_o this_o matter_n be_v use_v plain_o to_o express_v and_o set_v out_o the_o propriety_n that_o be_v in_o the_o essence_n of_o god_n the_o word_n substance_n or_o as_o the_o greek_n speak_v hypostasis_fw-la be_v indeed_o more_o meet_a and_o convenient_a because_o it_o wit_n that_o he_o be_v the_o fountain_n of_o all_o thing_n trinity_n god_n word_n only_o must_v be_v the_o rule_n of_o our_o faith_n in_o all_o point_n but_o special_o in_o the_o article_n of_o the_o trinity_n but_o now_o let_v we_o look_v to_o their_o three_o substance_n or_o person_n as_o we_o call_v they_o and_o mark_v how_o they_o accord_n and_o agree_v so_o farfoorth_o as_o god_n teach_v we_o concern_v they_o as_o i_o have_v already_o say_v for_o we_o must_v not_o at_o any_o hand_n go_v beyond_o these_o bound_n and_o limit_n and_o therefore_o let_v we_o have_v a_o eye_n thereto_o so_o farforth_o as_o shall_v be_v requisite_a for_o the_o exposition_n of_o the_o place_n when_o man_n speak_v of_o god_n true_a it_o be_v that_o man_n of_o themselves_o be_v confound_v and_o know_v not_o what_o to_o think_v or_o imagine_v save_v that_o they_o go_v astray_o in_o their_o own_o cogitation_n and_o thought_n 1.21_o rom._n 1.21_o as_o saint_n paul_n say_v and_o thereupon_o it_o fall_v out_o that_o they_o wax_v thereof_o over_o proud_a through_o their_o own_o prudencie_n and_o wisdom_n and_o therefore_o god_n also_o do_v in_o such_o sort_n punish_v they_o that_o they_o entangle_v the_o essence_n of_o god_n and_o this_o be_v that_o which_o saint_n john_n mean_v to_o say_v in_o this_o place_n that_o that_o word_n be_v with_o god_n if_o there_o be_v not_o some_o distinction_n he_o can_v not_o speak_v so_o for_o that_o shall_v be_v to_o speak_v unproper_o to_o say_v god_n be_v with_o himself_o so_o then_o let_v we_o know_v that_o this_o word_n have_v some_o distinction_n and_o be_v indeed_o to_o be_v distinguish_v from_o the_o heavenly_a father_n beginning_n christ_n beget_v from_o before_o all_o beginning_n for_o it_o be_v that_o word_n that_o be_v beget_v from_o before_o all_o time_n see_v that_o god_n always_o have_v his_o counsel_n and_o his_o wisdom_n and_o we_o must_v not_o for_o all_o that_o so_o much_o as_o imagine_v or_o think_v upon_o a_o beginning_n for_o we_o may_v not_o say_v that_o god_n have_v at_o any_o time_n be_v without_o his_o understanding_n counsel_n and_o wisdom_n so_o then_o we_o must_v not_o set_v aside_o and_o separate_v from_o god_n the_o propriety_n of_o this_o word_n as_o to_o say_v that_o we_o can_v judge_v that_o there_o have_v be_v some_o certain_a time_n wherein_o it_o have_v not_o be_v with_o god_n for_o this_o shall_v be_v to_o make_v a_o idol_n of_o it_o basil_n the_o trinity_n destroy_v not_o the_o unity_n neither_o do_v the_o unity_n infringe_v the_o trinity_n gregor_n nazi_n in_o sermo_fw-la de_fw-fr sacro_fw-la basil_n as_o it_o be_v but_o as_o i_o have_v say_v the_o three_o person_n be_v but_o one_o god_n and_o yet_o for_o all_o that_o we_o must_v distinguish_v they_o because_o there_o be_v a_o understanding_n come_v back_o again_o to_o one_o and_o on_o the_o other_o side_n it_o be_v impossible_a for_o i_o to_o know_v one_o only_a god_n but_o that_o i_o regard_n and_o look_v upon_o all_o the_o three_o propriety_n and_o see_v they_o distinguish_v in_o my_o own_o understanding_n according_a to_o the_o light_n which_o be_v give_v i_o thereof_o in_o the_o holy_a scripture_n behold_v how_o the_o faithful_a shall_v know_v god_n know_v the_o father_n they_o will_v come_v to_o his_o wisdom_n who_o be_v this_o word_n of_o which_o there_o be_v speak_v in_o this_o place_n they_o will_v come_v also_o incontinent_o to_o that_o virtue_n and_o power_n whereof_o we_o have_v in_o part_n say_v somewhat_o and_o when_o they_o shall_v have_v once_o know_v these_o three_o person_n they_o will_v not_o any_o more_o straggle_v and_o wander_v hither_o and_o thither_o but_o they_o will_v come_v to_o this_o one_o and_o only_a essence_n to_o know_v that_o there_o be_v no_o more_o but_o one_o only_a god_n work_n the_o perfection_n of_o god_n work_n that_o the_o evangelist_n mean_v to_o separate_v jesus_n christ_n from_o all_o creature_n and_o yet_o notwithstanding_o to_o declare_v unto_o we_o the_o distinction_n which_o be_v between_o he_o and_o the_o father_n now_o he_o add_v that_o that_o word_n be_v god_n and_o this_o he_o do_v the_o more_o full_o and_o better_a to_o express_v that_o which_o he_o mean_v god_n christ_n be_v very_a god_n to_o wit_n that_o jesus_n christ_n be_v not_o a_o thing_n create_v which_o have_v have_v a_o beginning_n but_o that_o he_o be_v our_o true_a and_o very_a god_n this_o place_n have_v be_v ill_o understand_v of_o some_o judgement_n read_v this_o with_o reverence_n and_o judgement_n and_o they_o have_v also_o foolish_o translate_v it_o as_o to_o say_v god_n be_v the_o word_n for_o if_o we_o shall_v say_v that_o god_n be_v the_o word_n the_o father_n shall_v be_v no_o more_o god_n the_o holy_a ghost_n shall_v be_v no_o more_o god_n but_o s._n john_n mean_v to_o speak_v altogether_o the_o contrary_a to_o wit_n that_o this_o word_n be_v god_n as_o if_o he_o shall_v say_v that_o jesus_n christ_n in_o respect_n of_o his_o deity_n and_o godhead_n be_v of_o the_o same_o essence_n with_o the_o father_n so_o he_o shut_v not_o the_o father_n out_o from_o the_o deity_n but_o declare_v that_o there_o be_v no_o more_o but_o one_o only_a essence_n in_o god_n and_o although_o there_o be_v a_o distinction_n between_o god_n and_o his_o word_n yet_o must_v we_o always_o come_v back_o to_o this_o simple_a and_o plain_a truth_n that_o they_o be_v one_o god_n which_o we_o must_v worship_v etc._n arius_n nestorius_n etc._n etc._n it_o be_v true_a that_o the_o old_a heretic_n travail_v very_o sore_o to_o pervert_v this_o place_n to_o the_o end_n
and_o we_o can_v abide_v firm_a and_o constant_a but_o this_o be_v not_o in_o god_n for_o that_o which_o be_v in_o he_o be_v of_o his_o essence_n and_o eternity_n and_o this_o be_v the_o cause_n wherefore_o s._n john_n declare_v that_o this_o word_n be_v very_o &_o true_o god_n but_o as_o concern_v the_o word_n we_o must_v not_o as_o i_o have_v already_o say_v imagine_v a_o counsel_n or_o a_o wisdom_n in_o god_n which_o shall_v be_v like_a to_o the_o word_n of_o man_n true_a it_o be_v that_o we_o may_v well_o take_v some_o comparison_n from_o ourselves_o but_o yet_o we_o ought_v always_o to_o mark_v the_o long_a distance_n and_o great_a difference_n that_o be_v between_o we_o and_o god_n similitude_n a_o apt_a similitude_n for_o if_o the_o heaven_n be_v much_o high_a than_o the_o earth_n much_o more_o must_v it_o needs_o be_v that_o we_o shall_v know_v and_o confess_v that_o god_n be_v more_o high_a than_o we_o yea_o there_o be_v no_o proportion_n or_o resemblance_n as_o it_o be_v between_o god_n and_o man_n so_o then_o when_o man_n shall_v bring_v or_o allege_v unto_o we_o some_o similitude_n take_v from_o the_o creature_n we_o must_v always_o mark_v this_o great_a distance_n and_o difference_n which_o be_v between_o god_n and_o us._n 5.7_o there_o be_v two_o part_n or_o power_n of_o a_o man_n soul_n to_o wit_n understanding_n and_o will_n see_v his_o but_o a_o certain_a power_n as_o a_o man_n will_v say_v to_o will_n which_o thing_n man_n have_v in_o himself_o for_o man_n be_v not_o as_o a_o stone_n or_o as_o a_o pile_n of_o wood_n without_o sense_n and_o reason_n but_o he_o have_v imprint_v in_o he_o this_o property_n to_o will_v this_o or_o that_o so_o then_o we_o may_v take_v and_o use_v such_o similitude_n but_o yet_o notwithstanding_o we_o must_v consider_v that_o speech_n be_v here_o have_v of_o so_o high_a thing_n as_o of_o necessity_n all_o man_n understanding_n and_o wit_n must_v be_v abase_v and_o bring_v low_o and_o we_o must_v handle_v they_o and_o entreat_v of_o they_o in_o all_o humility_n apply_v they_o to_o their_o true_a meaning_n avoid_v curiosity_n and_o vain_a imagination_n must_v be_v avoid_v and_o must_v not_o be_v over_o curious_a we_o then_o have_v that_o fond_a imagination_n which_o have_v bear_v sway_n and_o rule_v heretofore_o in_o the_o world_n but_o we_o must_v come_v to_o god_n school_n to_o hearken_v to_o that_o which_o he_o shall_v speak_v unto_o we_o and_o to_o fly_v from_o all_o that_o which_o man_n shall_v set_v out_o and_o shall_v be_v find_v contrary_a to_o against_o it_o because_o moses_n say_v that_o god_n in_o the_o beginning_n create_v heaven_n and_o earth_n and_o that_o now_o s._n john_n say_v that_o this_o word_n be_v in_o the_o beginning_n that_o it_o seem_v hereby_o see_v that_o so_o it_o be_v that_o the_o heaven_n the_o earth_n and_o other_o creature_n have_v a_o beginning_n that_o we_o can_v not_o prove_v the_o eternity_n or_o everlastingnes_n of_o jesus_n christ_n because_o it_o be_v say_v that_o the_o word_n be_v in_o the_o beginning_n answer_v a_o objection_n answer_v but_o the_o answer_n be_v easy_a to_o wit_n that_o when_o moses_n speak_v of_o the_o beginning_n we_o be_v to_o remember_v &_o mark_v whereof_o he_o speak_v that_o be_v of_o heaven_n of_o earth_n and_o other_o thing_n that_o have_v indeed_o a_o beginning_n but_o now_o let_v we_o weigh_v and_o mark_v that_o which_o saint_n john_n say_v in_o the_o beginning_n say_v he_o be_v that_o word_n and_o where_o be_v the_o beginning_n very_o in_o god_n he_o mind_v to_o set_v out_o two_o diverse_a thing_n that_o be_v too_o say_v that_o as_o all_o be_v once_o create_v by_o the_o power_n of_o that_o word_n of_o god_n so_o all_o thing_n continue_v and_o be_v preserve_v by_o that_o power_n and_o by_o the_o same_o mean_a and_o these_o be_v 2._o matter_n which_o it_o behoove_v we_o well_o to_o consider_v and_o way_n mark_v two_o thing_n worthy_a to_o be_v mark_v the_o one_o that_o we_o have_v our_o beginning_n and_o life_n by_o this_o word_n the_o other_o that_o we_o be_v uphold_v
and_o maintain_v thereby_o and_o that_o not_o we_o only_o but_o all_o the_o world_n also_o that_o the_o world_n be_v not_o only_o create_v at_o the_o begin_n by_o this_o word_n but_o also_o that_o hebrews_n 1.3_o heb._n 1.3_o that_o the_o son_n of_o god_n be_v the_o brightness_n of_o the_o glory_n or_o the_o image_n of_o his_o substance_n and_o person_n of_o god_n his_o father_n and_o that_o he_o uphold_v all_o thing_n by_o his_o word_n he_o use_v there_o the_o word_n word_n but_o yet_o in_o such_o a_o signification_n that_o he_o mean_v not_o only_o the_o power_n of_o the_o son_n of_o god_n but_o also_o a_o certain_a wonderful_a disposition_n and_o a_o very_a fit_n and_o seemly_a order_n which_o he_o have_v set_v in_o the_o thing_n create_v because_o he_o be_v the_o wisdom_n of_o blasphemy_n to_o say_v so_o we_o see_v then_o that_o when_o man_n will_v speak_v of_o some_o ceremony_n or_o some_o superstitious_a observation_n they_o shall_v come_v to_o the_o general_a rule_n because_o they_o be_v thing_n join_v together_o yea_o thing_n that_o can_v not_o be_v sunder_v so_o much_o also_o be_v there_o to_o be_v say_v concern_v the_o work_v of_o the_o law_n for_o when_o the_o jew_n will_v that_o man_n shall_v observe_v circumcision_n and_o that_o it_o shall_v continual_o abide_v whole_a and_o sound_a that_o proceed_v from_o a_o error_n for_o they_o suppose_v that_o circumcision_n be_v god_n service_n and_o that_o it_o be_v a_o meritorious_a work_n to_o be_v justify_v by_o and_o it_o be_v likely_a that_o they_o hold_v so_o much_o also_o concern_v all_o the_o
