in_o the_o truth_n these_o indeed_o be_v great_a token_n of_o yâ—_z fear_v of_o god_n but_o yet_o we_o be_v not_o to_o rest_v in_o they_o our_o chief_a deal_n be_v between_o god_n &_o our_o heart_n &_o that_o in_o this_o thing_n whether_o our_o heart_n be_v not_o hard_a and_o rocky_a those_o be_v a_o thousand_o time_n happy_a which_o feel_v melt_a heart_n &_o soft_a affection_n so_o that_o god_n word_n do_v pierce_v into_o they_o and_o cause_v they_o to_o tremble_v at_o the_o majesty_n &_o power_n of_o the_o same_o their_o tender_a heart_n do_v sigh_v &_o mourn_v for_o their_o iniquity_n as_o on_o the_o contrary_a part_n they_o which_o make_v no_o conscience_n of_o sin_n but_o be_v harden_v in_o their_o affection_n although_o they_o seem_v to_o be_v in_o good_a case_n yet_o be_v they_o curse_v and_o miserable_a let_v every_o man_n therefore_o that_o go_v from_o the_o sermon_n carry_v this_o with_o he_o i_o hear_v by_o christ_n own_a word_n that_o there_o be_v a_o stony_a ground_n where_o the_o seed_n fall_v where_o it_o grow_v but_o not_o deep_a enough_o it_o spring_v up_o but_o do_v not_o bring_v forth_o fruit_n this_o be_v a_o woeful_a case_n if_o i_o shall_v be_v in_o the_o joy_n in_o it_o i_o will_v not_o for_o any_o thing_n but_o i_o have_v hear_v it_o but_o christ_n say_v that_o the_o reprobate_n some_o of_o they_o do_v hear_v the_o word_n with_o joy_n so_o that_o if_o i_o look_v not_o narrow_o to_o my_o own_o hart_n i_o may_v for_o all_o this_o be_v damn_v therefore_o i_o must_v not_o satisfy_v myself_o with_o this_o but_o see_v that_o i_o cover_v the_o word_n deep_a enough_o that_o my_o heart_n be_v soften_v in_o such_o sort_n that_o i_o feel_v the_o root_n go_v deep_a yea_o so_o deep_a that_o it_o can_v never_o be_v root_v out_o and_o therefore_o let_v he_o continual_o cry_v unto_o god_n and_o say_v o_o lord_n make_v soft_a my_o hard_a and_o stony_a heart_n let_v it_o be_v a_o melt_a heart_n that_o thy_o holy_a word_n may_v grow_v in_o it_o for_o ever_o i_o will_v to_o god_n this_o doctrine_n of_o our_o saviour_n christ_n may_v make_v everye_o of_o we_o to_o tremble_v and_o shake_v as_o indeed_o if_o it_o be_v well_o weigh_v it_o be_v so_o fearful_a that_o it_o may_v cause_v the_o hair_n of_o our_o head_n to_o stand_v up_o for_o then_o will_v we_o not_o so_o loose_o and_o secure_o walk_v in_o the_o hardness_n of_o our_o heart_n there_o will_v not_o be_v so_o many_o backslider_n in_o time_n of_o persecution_n there_o will_v not_o be_v so_o many_o brave_a boaster_n and_o prater_n of_o religion_n who_o be_v ready_a to_o pull_v in_o their_o horn_n and_o to_o kide_v their_o head_n so_o soon_o as_o there_o be_v any_o fear_n of_o danger_n or_o likelihood_n of_o persecution_n neither_o will_v man_n bear_v themselves_o in_o hand_n that_o they_o â—e_v jolly_a professor_n when_o they_o have_v but_o a_o little_a taste_v of_o the_o word_n and_o be_v no_o more_o but_o empty_a barrel_n which_o give_v a_o great_a sound_n here_o than_o we_o be_v set_v a_o work_n with_o great_a toil_n to_o have_v this_o same_o hard_a stony_a ground_n make_v soft_a and_o fit_a to_o receive_v this_o heavenlye_a seed_n and_o he_o which_o be_v not_o careful_a in_o this_o point_n to_o take_v pain_n you_o shall_v see_v he_o wax_v so_o hard_o that_o even_o as_o a_o continual_a rain_n drop_v upon_o a_o rock_n of_o stone_n make_v it_o never_o the_o soft_a so_o nothing_o can_v make_v his_o heart_n to_o relent_v this_o may_v teach_v we_o then_o to_o cease_v marvel_v when_o we_o see_v so_o many_o which_o willing_o give_v themselves_o to_o be_v teach_v and_o have_v still_o little_o remorre_v of_o sin_n the_o lord_n for_o his_o mercy_n sake_n make_v we_o wise_a and_o sharp_a sight_v to_o judge_v of_o ourselves_o not_o to_o be_v lead_v on_o forward_o in_o a_o carnal_a profession_n but_o to_o give_v credit_n to_o our_o heavenlye_a teacher_n who_o have_v here_o open_v his_o holy_a mouth_n to_o instruct_v we_o so_o plain_o and_o before_o hand_n to_o warn_v we_o of_o the_o great_a danger_n that_o we_o may_v stir_v up_o ourselves_o and_o the_o quicken_v in_o our_o dull_a spirit_n with_o all_o humble_a submission_n and_o boow_v down_o our_o neck_n to_o receive_v the_o doctrine_n of_o our_o lord_n and_o to_o open_v our_o heart_n in_o such_o sort_n that_o he_o may_v dig_v in_o they_o and_o thrust_v in_o his_o spade_n to_o the_o bottom_n for_o otherwise_o it_o can_v go_v well_o with_o us._n if_o this_o be_v practise_v among_o we_o we_o shall_v not_o have_v so_o many_o old_a rusty_a protestant_n which_o if_o a_o man_n talk_v with_o they_o from_o morning_n to_o night_n they_o be_v able_a to_o continue_v speech_n in_o recite_v story_n and_o place_n of_o scripture_n and_o will_v utter_v matter_n against_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o pope_n but_o let_v a_o man_n urge_v they_o with_o the_o doctrine_n of_o regeneration_n and_o stand_v upon_o the_o necessity_n of_o sincere_a repentance_n show_v they_o that_o they_o must_v it_o grow_v up_o and_o the_o thorn_n grow_v up_o with_o it_o the_o stalk_n do_v shoot_v forth_o the_o ear_n and_o lack_v but_o ripe_n for_o this_o may_v be_v prove_v by_o saint_n luke_n who_o say_v that_o they_o be_v not_o telesphorountes_n that_o be_v such_o as_o bear_v ripe_a and_o timely_a fruit_n for_o these_o professor_n do_v many_o good_a work_n and_o seem_v to_o bring_v forth_o the_o fruit_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o that_o in_o such_o wise_a that_o man_n can_v always_o discern_v they_o but_o think_v their_o deed_n to_o be_v notable_a but_o christ_n jesus_n do_v show_v that_o their_o work_n before_o god_n who_o only_o can_v be_v deceive_v be_v as_o corn_n which_o lack_v ripe_n which_o be_v overshadow_a with_o bush_n wither_v in_o the_o ear_n and_o come_v to_o naught_o this_o be_v a_o dangerous_a case_n if_o we_o look_v not_o to_o it_o that_o a_o man_n may_v hear_v the_o gospel_n preach_v carry_v it_o away_o be_v move_v thereby_o to_o do_v many_o good_a work_n and_o yet_o be_v damn_v he_o be_v a_o thousand_o fold_n mad_a therefore_o which_o do_v not_o look_v to_o himself_o in_o this_o point_n to_o try_v what_o soundness_n there_o be_v in_o the_o fruit_n of_o his_o faith_n and_o how_o sincere_o he_o do_v embrace_v god_n word_n as_o before_o i_o say_v that_o some_o will_v object_v and_o say_v this_o will_v destroy_v the_o faith_n so_o be_o i_o sure_a that_o here_o it_o will_v be_v say_v much_o more_o because_o this_o seem_v to_o take_v away_o the_o sure_a trial_n of_o faith_n if_o a_o man_n may_v not_o by_o and_o by_o say_v i_o have_v good_a work_n therefore_o i_o have_v the_o true_a and_o lyvely_a faith_n i_o answer_v that_o whosoever_o have_v any_o good_a work_n in_o he_o the_o same_o have_v the_o true_a faith_n which_o have_v bring_v forth_o that_o good_a work_n because_o it_o be_v impossible_a without_o faith_n to_o do_v any_o good_a thing_n or_o to_o have_v any_o good_a motion_n or_o intent_n but_o withal_o i_o say_v that_o it_o be_v one_o thing_n to_o seem_v good_a before_o man_n and_o another_o thing_n for_o to_o be_v good_a indeed_o before_o god_n in_o outward_a appearance_n there_o be_v little_a difference_n between_o the_o good_a deed_n of_o they_o which_o fear_n god_n sincere_o and_o the_o untimely_a fruit_n of_o worldlyng_n but_o god_n who_o eye_n do_v not_o look_v upon_o the_o outward_a show_n but_o the_o inward_a affection_n see_v which_o proceed_v of_o faith_n and_o which_o do_v proceed_v of_o vain_a glory_n or_o some_o other_o sinister_a respect_n &_o put_v as_o great_a difference_n between_o they_o as_o he_o do_v between_o the_o sacrifice_n of_o cayn_n &_o abel_n we_o must_v take_v heed_n then_o that_o the_o fruit_n of_o our_o faith_n be_v ripe_a &_o timely_a otherwise_o they_o be_v good_a but_o in_o show_n we_o must_v come_v then_o to_o see_v first_o what_o these_o thorn_n be_v in_o s._n matthew_n they_o be_v call_v the_o care_n of_o this_o world_n &_o the_o deceitfulnes_n of_o riches_n in_o saint_n luke_n the_o care_n of_o riches_n &_o pleasure_n of_o this_o life_n and_o in_o very_a deed_n these_o thorn_n do_v grow_v together_o for_o be_v it_o not_o for_o the_o pleasure_n of_o this_o life_n there_o will_v be_v no_o care_n of_o riches_n he_o which_o do_v seek_v gréedelye_o for_o wealth_n it_o be_v either_o because_o he_o will_v be_v able_a to_o have_v wherewithal_o to_o fill_v the_o lust_n of_o yâ—_z flesh_n and_o to_o pamper_v his_o body_n delicate_o or_o else_o to_o set_v forth_o himself_o in_o pride_n &_o to_o climb_v ambitious_o to_o honour_n for_o so_o long_o as_o a_o man_n do_v take_v pleasure_n in_o any_o of_o these_o so_o long_o he_o be_v covetous_a &_o rake_v together_o so_o much_o that_o as_o the_o common_a say_n be_v he_o rake_v up_o the_o devil_n and_o all_o what_o must_v we_o do_v then_o our_o heart_n be_v as_o a_o ground_n that_o be_v rank_n &_o bring_v forth_o many_o weed_n we_o be_v set_v a_o work_n as_o god_n speak_v by_o his_o prophet_n jeremy_n chap._n 4._o 4._o plough_v up_o your_o falow_a &_o sow_v not_o among_o the_o thorn_n we_o must_v put_v all_o diligence_n &_o care_n that_o our_o heart_n may_v be_v rid_v of_o such_o noisome_a weed_n as_o will_v choke_v the_o word_n of_o god_n &_o make_v that_o it_o shall_v not_o bring_v forth_o fruit_n in_o us._n so_o long_o as_o we_o suffer_v any_o of_o these_o in_o we_o either_o to_o love_v the_o school_n of_o christ_n alas_o poor_a man_n which_o will_v feign_v come_v to_o god_n &_o yet_o be_v glue_v to_o the_o world_n they_o offer_v one_o hand_n to_o christ_n &_o the_o other_o to_o the_o devil_n they_o can_v talk_v of_o the_o spirit_n &_o yet_o be_v lead_v by_o the_o flesh_n the_o gospel_n be_v in_o their_o mouth_n &_o covetousness_n lodge_v in_o their_o heart_n their_o work_n glister_v &_o be_v green_a before_o man_n and_o be_v wither_v before_o god_n they_o seem_v to_o be_v faithful_a &_o be_v faithless_a to_o be_v heir_n of_o glory_n &_o yet_o be_v the_o child_n of_o confusion_n there_o be_v great_a plenty_n of_o these_o herer_n &_o special_o in_o such_o place_n where_o there_o be_v wealth_n and_o honour_n how_o many_o fall_n away_o cheked_a with_o the_o world_n and_o yet_o we_o be_v not_o afraid_a of_o ourselves_o to_o take_v heed_n that_o we_o stand_v fast_o a_o great_a mercy_n of_o god_n it_o be_v that_o we_o have_v not_o only_o the_o doctrine_n lay_v before_o we_o but_o also_o fearful_a example_n so_o that_o we_o may_v buy_v our_o wit_n with_o other_o man_n cost_n for_o when_o we_o see_v the_o world_n with_o delight_n and_o pleasure_n with_o conetousnesse_n and_o ambition_n to_o carry_v away_o those_o which_o profess_v the_o gospel_n be_v not_o our_o own_o matter_n in_o hand_n be_v not_o we_o make_v of_o the_o same_o mettle_n they_o be_v do_v not_o the_o world_n assault_v we_o as_o it_o do_v they_o yes_o and_o we_o shall_v be_v overcome_v also_o if_o the_o lord_n have_v not_o mercy_n upon_o us._n the_o hardness_n of_o this_o work_n ought_v not_o to_o discorage_v or_o make_v we_o slack_v but_o hear_v what_o christ_n say_v who_o we_o ought_v to_o believe_v the_o more_o hard_a the_o more_o we_o be_v to_o stir_v up_o ourselves_o unless_o we_o make_v small_a reckon_n of_o the_o salvation_n of_o our_o soul_n he_o that_o shall_v yield_v and_o give_v over_o the_o dig_v up_o of_o these_o thorn_n because_o he_o perceive_v they_o grow_v deep_a in_o his_o heart_n and_o spring_n as_o fast_o as_o he_o can_v cut_v they_o be_v not_o worthy_a to_o enter_v into_o life_n be_v which_o will_v not_o continual_o till_o and_o weed_n this_o ground_n may_v well_o have_v the_o gospel_n in_o some_o sort_n for_o to_o grow_v in_o he_o but_o not_o to_o save_v he_o déer_o belove_v we_o must_v be_v sure_o persuade_v of_o this_o that_o as_o there_o be_v many_o godly_a man_n so_o have_v they_o attein_v it_o with_o great_a labour_n and_o toil_n yea_o they_o be_v still_o set_v a_o work_n and_o can_v come_v to_o a_o end_n because_o these_o thorn_n can_v be_v utterlye_o roâ—ted_v out_o those_o be_v great_o overséene_a which_o think_v it_o to_o be_v a_o easy_a thing_n to_o profess_v christ_n unto_o salvation_n &_o make_v no_o further_o account_v but_o to_o be_v gospeler_n at_o ease_n if_o they_o can_v vanquish_v in_o disputation_n to_o think_v they_o have_v win_v the_o field_n no_o no_o they_o have_v a_o heart_n which_o be_v hard_a to_o overcome_v they_o have_v thorn_n which_o will_v not_o easy_o be_v destroy_v here_o lie_v the_o victory_n and_o get_n of_o the_o spur_n this_o man_n shall_v be_v crown_v because_o he_o have_v willing_o give_v up_o himself_o to_o the_o power_n of_o god_n grace_n
