rom._n 10.17_o shall_v also_o understand_v by_o these_o word_n the_o prophet_n show_v from_o whence_o faith_n come_v to_o wit_n by_o hear_v of_o the_o word_n of_o god_n but_o by_o the_o way_n he_o also_o mean_v that_o it_o be_v not_o enough_o to_o have_v our_o ear_n beat_v with_o the_o hear_n of_o the_o gospel_n without_o we_o understande_v it_o now_o this_o be_v not_o give_v to_o all_o man_n and_o cry_v out_o as_o one_o that_o be_v merueylous_o astonish_v and_o this_o place_n be_v great_o worth_a the_o note_n we_o have_v hear_v that_o he_o exhort_v the_o faithful_a to_o magnanimity_n and_o constancy_n as_o if_o he_o have_v say_v my_o good_a friend_n be_v not_o abash_v although_o your_o redeemer_n be_v of_o no_o estimation_n nor_o credit_n in_o the_o world_n but_o be_v rather_o worship_v yea_o king_n themselves_o although_o they_o be_v never_o so_o proud_o bend_v shall_v be_v enforce_v to_o abase_v themselves_o and_o most_o willing_o obey_v thus_o we_o see_v how_o honourable_a the_o word_n of_o the_o prophet_n be_v now_o he_o foresé_v that_o when_o the_o gospel_n shall_v be_v preach_v throughout_o the_o face_n of_o the_o whole_a earth_n that_o some_o will_v make_v a_o jest_n at_o it_o some_o will_v be_v mad_a at_o it_o some_o will_v never_o find_v any_o taste_n in_o it_o some_o will_v be_v blockishe_a other_o some_o will_v hypocritical_o lie_v unto_o god_n and_o make_v a_o show_n that_o they_o love_v and_o obey_v the_o gospel_n and_o yet_o all_o shall_v be_v but_o plain_a dissemble_n wherefore_o the_o prophet_n see_v the_o world_n to_o be_v thus_o wicked_a and_o foresee_v that_o god_n shall_v not_o be_v hear_v nor_o yet_o his_o word_n so_o reverent_o receive_v as_o it_o ought_v wonder_v and_o cry_v out_o say_v who_o shall_v believe_v our_o conceive_v in_o their_o fantastical_a crow_a brain_n beside_o there_o be_v some_o so_o blockish_a as_o that_o they_o be_v neither_o name_v nor_o touch_v more_o than_o stone_n and_o othersome_a there_o be_v who_o though_o they_o have_v a_o fair_a cloak_n of_o godliness_n yet_o be_v they_o liar_n and_o perjure_a person_n and_o nothing_o in_o they_o but_o deceit_n and_o hypocrisy_n this_o we_o well_o enough_o see_v and_o although_o the_o prophet_n have_v say_v nothing_o yet_o we_o will_v open_v our_o eye_n we_o shall_v see_v it_o to_o be_v so_o and_o be_v not_o this_o a_o fearful_a thing_n and_o a_o monster_n against_o nature_n yes_o no_o doubt_n of_o it_o now_o here_o may_v marvelous_a offence_n be_v take_v to_o serve_v as_o it_o be_v for_o a_o bar_n to_o keep_v we_o from_o come_v to_o the_o gospel_n if_o we_o shall_v look_v into_o the_o deal_n of_o the_o world_n so_o that_o we_o may_v say_v what_o if_o the_o word_n of_o god_n be_v our_o most_o excellent_a blessedness_n and_o felicity_n how_o fall_v it_o out_o that_o it_o be_v thus_o reject_v and_o beside_o what_o be_v the_o cause_n that_o god_n suffer_v himself_o thus_o to_o be_v scorn_v and_o resist_v and_o that_o he_o make_v they_o not_o to_o hear_v he_o &_o to_o give_v he_o the_o credit_n which_o appertain_v unto_o he_o so_o what_o temptation_n here_o be_v to_o cause_v we_o not_o to_o believe_v the_o gospel_n sure_o that_o we_o must_v all_o seek_v after_o and_o this_o bread_n among_o other_o virtue_n have_v this_o that_o be_v it_o make_v he_o who_o be_v daily_o feed_v therewith_o more_o and_o more_o increase_n in_o the_o unity_n of_o faith_n until_o such_o time_n as_o he_o come_v to_o the_o fullness_n of_o a_o perfect_a man_n and_o without_o faith_n there_o be_v no_o salvation_n and_o faith_n as_o the_o apostle_n witness_v come_v by_o hear_v and_o hear_v come_v by_o preach_v of_o the_o word_n so_o that_o without_o hear_v of_o the_o word_n preach_v there_o can_v be_v no_o faith_n and_o consequent_o no_o salvation_n this_o bread_n also_o of_o the_o word_n have_v so_o pleasant_a a_o taste_n as_o that_o if_o the_o sweetness_n of_o honey_n itself_o be_v compare_v with_o it_o it_o shall_v be_v as_o bitter_a as_o gal._n sure_o the_o godly_a and_o best_a fruit_n of_o the_o earth_n in_o respect_n of_o this_o which_o restore_v the_o soul_n rejoice_v the_o heart_n strengthen_v the_o weak_a and_o comfort_v the_o afflict_a be_v all_o but_o rot_v and_o no_o whit_n pleasant_a or_o delightful_a to_o be_v short_a over_o and_o beside_o that_o we_o be_v with_o so_o great_a pleasure_n thereby_o in_o such_o sort_n strengthen_v as_o no_o tongue_n be_v able_a to_o express_v we_o be_v moreover_o so_o enrich_v therewith_o as_o that_o all_o the_o treasure_n in_o this_o world_n in_o regard_n of_o it_o shall_v never_o submit_v ourselves_o unto_o the_o thing_n which_o god_n show_v and_o declare_v unto_o we_o except_o we_o humble_v ourselves_o in_o the_o first_o place_n and_o for_o a_o confirmation_n which_o he_o have_v add_v we_o unto_o his_o word_n we_o have_v the_o sacrament_n and_o will_v one_o drop_n of_o water_n suffice_v to_o assure_v we_o of_o remission_n of_o our_o sin_n and_o that_o god_n have_v adopt_v we_o for_o his_o child_n and_o that_o although_o we_o be_v frail_a shall_v we_o notwithstanding_o be_v clothe_v with_o his_o heavenly_a glory_n which_o never_o shall_v decay_v be_v it_o possible_a for_o we_o to_o take_v a_o pawn_n and_o pledge_v of_o so_o notable_a and_o great_a thing_n in_o so_o small_a a_o deal_n of_o water_n may_v a_o piece_n of_o bread_n and_o a_o little_a wine_n in_o the_o supper_n of_o the_o lord_n suffice_v to_o assure_v we_o that_o god_n allow_v we_o for_o his_o child_n that_o we_o live_v in_o jesus_n christ_n and_o no_o separation_n between_o we_o for_o this_o may_v seem_v rather_o to_o be_v a_o matter_n of_o nothing_o to_o see_v such_o ceremony_n wherein_o be_v no_o great_a glory_n and_o pomp_n so_o then_o we_o somewhat_o better_a see_v this_o thing_n which_o be_v beer_n speak_v by_o the_o minister_n belong_v to_o we_o and_o that_o we_o have_v to_o make_v our_o profit_n thereof_o at_o this_o day_n to_o wit_n let_v not_o we_o cease_v to_o draw_v near_o unto_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n and_o assure_v ourselves_o that_o he_o it_o be_v in_o who_o we_o must_v find_v all_o goodness_n and_o all_o joy_n and_o glory_n although_o it_o seem_v that_o he_o be_v yet_o as_o it_o be_v in_o the_o stable_a in_o the_o manger_n and_o in_o his_o swaddle_a clothes_n to_o wit_n that_o there_o be_v many_o thing_n which_o be_v able_a to_o make_v we_o become_v dissolute_a or_o wanton_a or_o at_o the_o least_o blear_v our_o eye_n that_o we_o shall_v not_o be_v able_a to_o perceive_v the_o heavenly_a glory_n which_o god_n i_o have_v say_v thus_o gross_o as_o these_o woman_n of_o who_o we_o have_v speak_v do_v as_o indeed_o there_o be_v now_o no_o occasion_n to_o seek_v the_o sepulchre_n but_o let_v we_o go_v direct_o &_o without_o hipocyisie_n unto_o he_o by_o faith_n and_o let_v we_o understand_v that_o this_o message_n appertain_v to_o we_o and_o be_v speak_v to_o we_o that_o we_o may_v bold_o and_o without_o fear_n come_v unto_o he_o and_o not_o in_o contemptuous_a manner_n for_o we_o ought_v to_o worship_v the_o majesty_n of_o god_n in_o fear_n and_o tremble_a but_o how_o ever_o it_o be_v let_v we_o not_o be_v so_o savage_a as_o though_o distrust_n have_v oppress_v us._n and_o therefore_o let_v we_o understand_v that_o the_o son_n of_o god_n will_v conform_v himself_o like_o unto_o we_o whenas_o we_o come_v unto_o he_o by_o faith_n yea_o and_o we_o shall_v be_v sure_a to_o find_v wherewith_o to_o comfort_v and_o glad_v ourselves_o because_o he_o have_v purchase_v the_o kingdom_n and_o principality_n of_o everlasting_a life_n for_o our_o profit_n and_o welfare_n and_o yet_o notwithstanding_o the_o woman_n depart_v quick_o with_o fear_n and_o great_a joy_n loe_o how_o the_o weakness_n of_o their_o faith_n appear_v i_o have_v say_v that_o the_o thing_n which_o they_o go_v about_o be_v to_o a_o good_a end_n but_o they_o keep_v not_o the_o right_a course_n as_o may_v be_v see_v by_o their_o fear_n for_o they_o be_v not_o full_o resolve_v and_o assure_v of_o the_o resurrection_n and_o yet_o they_o have_v hear_v it_o many_o time_n speak_v of_o but_o their_o mind_n be_v not_o so_o settle_v as_o to_o conclude_v for_o a_o truth_n that_o there_o be_v no_o look_v for_o our_o lord_n jesus_n in_o the_o sepulchre_n we_o see_v then_o from_o whence_o this_o fear_n come_v and_o hereby_o we_o may_v perceive_v that_o this_o be_v a_o sinful_a affection_n indeed_o we_o must_v as_o i_o have_v say_v fear_v god_n reverence_v his_o majesty_n obey_v he_o and_o whole_o be_v humble_v to_o the_o end_n he_o may_v be_v glorious_o exalt_v and_o all_o mouth_n be_v stop_v &_o he_o thereby_o be_v know_v to_o be_v the_o only_o just_a wise_a &_o omnipotent_a god_n but_o this_o fear_n whereof_o mention_n be_v make_v in_o the_o 2._o place_n be_v wicked_a &_o damnable_a for_o it_o turn_v to_o the_o shame_n of_o these_o silly_a woman_n because_o that_o although_o they_o both_o see_v &_o hear_v the_o angel_n speak_v yet_o they_o think_v it_o to_o be_v but_o a_o dream_n as_o it_o be_v now_o by_o this_o we_o be_v advertise_v the_o god_n oftentimes_o so_o work_v in_o we_o as_o that_o we_o do_v not_o perceve_v as_o a_o man_n will_v say_v whether_o we_o have_v profit_v any_o whit_n or_o not_o for_o we_o be_v so_o ignorant_a &_o so_o fantastical_a as_o that_o we_o be_v overshadow_a as_o with_o cloud_n whereby_o we_o be_v not_o able_a to_o behold_v the_o clear_a light_n to_o be_v short_a all_o the_o doctrine_n of_o god_n seem_v to_o we_o very_o unprofitable_a &_o yet_o we_o find_v some_o taste_n among_o which_o make_v we_o feel_v that_o god_n have_v wrought_v in_o our_o heart_n for_o although_o there_o be_v but_o a_o spark_n of_o grace_n in_o we_o let_v we_o not_o be_v discourage_v but_o beseech_v the_o lord_n to_o increase_v that_o little_a that_o he_o have_v begin_v until_o such_o time_n as_o we_o be_v bring_v to_o a_o full_a perfection_n from_o the_o which_o we_o be_v as_o yet_o very_o far_o of_o and_o although_o the_o fear_n and_o joy_n which_o these_o woman_n have_v be_v accomt_v and_o condemn_v for_o a_o fault_n yet_o we_o see_v that_o god_n continual_o govern_v they_o by_o his_o holy_a spirit_n and_o that_o the_o message_n which_o the_o angel_n deliver_v unto_o they_o be_v not_o altogether_o unprofitable_a we_o be_v now_o to_o look_v far_o into_o the_o matter_n and_o that_o be_v this_o that_o lord_n jesus_n appear_v in_o the_o way_n unto_o they_o and_o say_v fear_v you_o not_o but_o go_v and_o tell_v my_o brethren_n that_o they_o meet_v altogether_o in_o galilee_n and_o there_o they_o shall_v see_v i_o we_o see_v here_o in_o this_o place_n a_o great_a deal_n more_o how_o that_o the_o son_n of_o god_n draw_v we_o unto_o he_o by_o degree_n until_o such_o time_n as_o we_o be_v thorough_o confirm_v whereof_o we_o have_v great_a need_n now_o this_o be_v sufficient_a enough_o that_o the_o woman_n have_v hard_o the_o message_n deliver_v by_o the_o mouth_n of_o the_o angel_n &_o the_o sign_n and_o token_n be_v such_o as_o that_o they_o can_v not_o choose_v but_o think_v that_o he_o be_v send_v from_o god_n for_o his_o face_n do_v shine_v as_o it_o be_v in_o very_a deed_n the_o whit_n garment_n and_o such_o like_a be_v not_o lively_o to_o express_v the_o majesty_n of_o god_n howbeit_o the_o woman_n have_v a_o assure_a testimony_n that_o it_o be_v not_o a_o mortal_a man_n which_o speak_v but_o a_o angel_n from_o heaven_n and_o therefore_o this_o be_v a_o sufficient_a testimony_n unto_o they_o but_o yet_o they_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n the_o more_o assure_v whenas_o they_o have_v see_v our_o lord_n jesus_n who_o they_o before_o know_v to_o be_v the_o son_n of_o god_n &_o his_o unchaungable_a truth_n and_o this_o more_o full_o ratify_v the_o thing_n which_o they_o have_v before_o hear_v by_o the_o mouth_n of_o the_o angel_n and_o thus_o we_o see_v how_o we_o may_v increase_v in_o faith_n for_o at_o the_o first_o we_o shall_v not_o be_v able_a to_o understand_v what_o power_n and_o effect_n be_v in_o the_o word_n of_o god_n but_o if_o we_o be_v teach_v well_o something_o we_o learn_v by_o it_o and_o yet_o be_v this_o little_a or_o nothing_o god_n wat_fw-mi howbeit_o god_n by_o little_a and_o little_o touch_v we_o with_o his_o holy_a spirit_n &_o in_o the_o end_n show_v we_o that_o it_o be_v he_o himself_o which_o speak_v and_o then_o be_v we_o full_o resolve_v insomuch_o as_o we_o have_v not_o only_o some_o knowledge_n but_o we_o be_v also_o so_o persuade_v as_o that_o when_o the_o devil_n shall_v go_v about_o to_o devise_v whatsoever_o he_o can_v possible_o yet_o shall_v he_o never_o be_v able_a to_o shake_v our_o faith_n because_o we_o hold_v this_o principle_n that_o the_o son_n of_o god_n be_v our_o teacher_n upon_o who_o we_o stay_v because_o we_o know_v he_o to_o have_v all_o mastership_n over_o we_o &_o be_v worthy_a of_o most_o excellent_a authority_n and_o this_o we_o see_v pour_v upon_o they_o wonderful_a extraordinary_a power_n &_o yet_o we_o shall_v be_v oftentimes_o so_o teach_v as_o that_o we_o may_v plain_o see_v our_o grossness_n and_o weakness_n to_o the_o end_n we_o may_v thereby_o so_o much_o the_o more_o glorify_v our_o god_n &_o acknowledge_v that_o whatsoever_o we_o have_v come_v all_o from_o he_o let_v we_o now_o come_v to_o the_o saying_n which_o that_o god_n will_v receive_v and_o allow_v they_o let_v we_o therefore_o beseech_v he_o that_o he_o will_v not_o show_v this_o favour_n to_o we_o alone_o but_o also_o unto_o all_o people_n and_o of_o a_o thing_n that_o be_v requisite_a for_o the_o assurance_n of_o our_o salvation_n wherefore_o if_o we_o will_v have_v the_o principal_a point_n of_o christianity_n we_o must_v come_v to_o this_o resurrection_n by_o which_o he_o purchase_v for_o we_o life_n and_o salvation_n and_o show_v himself_o to_o be_v the_o very_a son_n of_o god_n moreover_o let_v we_o also_o learn_v that_o since_o saint_n luke_n say_v that_o jesus_n christ_n have_v make_v we_o such_o proof_n of_o his_o resurrection_n let_v we_o not_o call_v that_o thing_n into_o question_n which_o god_n himself_o have_v so_o well_o approve_v and_o therefore_o if_o we_o be_v not_o at_o this_o day_n full_o persuade_v that_o jesus_n christ_n be_v rise_v again_o let_v we_o thank_v our_o own_o unthankfulness_n saint_n luke_n also_o use_v a_o kind_n of_o speech_n which_o a_o fourd_v a_o argument_n that_o bring_v with_o it_o a_o present_a proof_n and_o in_o deed_n we_o see_v what_o pain_n the_o evangelist_n have_v take_v in_o this_o matter_n for_o when_o they_o come_v to_o speak_v of_o the_o resurrection_n they_o lay_v forth_o all_o the_o circumstance_n and_o beside_o they_o recyte_v all_o the_o testimony_n of_o his_o word_n for_o he_o have_v say_v and_o declare_v that_o it_o be_v no_o vain_a imagination_n or_o vision_n whereby_o some_o trouble_n may_v afterward_o arise_v and_o therefore_o we_o ought_v to_o understande_v and_o know_v that_o since_o they_o have_v take_v so_o great_a pain_n herein_o that_o we_o must_v not_o stand_v in_o doubt_n of_o it_o but_o it_o be_v fit_a we_o shall_v receive_v their_o word_n as_o sure_a and_o certain_a see_v they_o bring_v so_o good_a a_o proof_n with_o they_o and_o therefore_o for_o this_o matter_n whereof_o saint_n luke_n speak_v that_o jesus_n christ_n
therefore_o we_o must_v conclude_v that_o there_o be_v but_o one_o father_n of_o life_n which_o be_v jesus_n christ_n wherefore_o we_o come_v to_o seek_v he_o in_o the_o supper_n and_o every_o one_o that_o come_v must_v have_v this_o settle_a mind_n to_o be_v able_a to_o say_v i_o come_v hither_o to_o have_v a_o testimony_n that_o jesus_n christ_n be_v my_o life_n that_o be_v incorporate_a into_o he_o i_o may_v live_v for_o ever_o but_o after_o what_o sort_n come_v we_o to_o find_v he_o in_o the_o supper_n if_o we_o come_v after_o the_o manner_n of_o the_o papist_n to_o find_v the_o body_n of_o our_o lord_n jesus_n we_o deceive_v ourselves_o for_o that_o be_v the_o most_o curse_a idolatry_n that_o may_v be_v to_o think_v the_o bread_n that_o we_o receive_v there_o to_o be_v the_o body_n of_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n we_o must_v therefore_o seek_v for_o he_o above_o and_o although_o we_o know_v he_o to_o be_v in_o heaven_n yet_o doubt_v we_o not_o but_o that_o he_o be_v with_o we_o by_o his_o grace_n insomuch_o that_o even_o as_o we_o see_v and_o touch_v the_o sign_n so_o likewise_o do_v jesus_n christ_n accomplish_v in_o we_o the_o thing_n which_o the_o sign_n represent_v body_n be_v sustain_v with_o bread_n even_o so_o our_o soul_n receive_v jesus_n christ_n for_o a_o spiritual_a food_n be_v preserve_v by_o the_o power_n of_o god_n and_o he_o remain_v in_o we_o by_o his_o grace_n howbeit_o here_o be_v not_o all_o to_o have_v understand_v thus_o much_o but_o we_o must_v also_o lift_v up_o our_o mind_n unto_o heaven_n for_o else_o we_o shall_v never_o be_v unite_v to_o jesus_n christ_n no_o doubt_n of_o it_o there_o be_v many_o which_o know_v well_o enough_o that_o jesus_n christ_n be_v not_o in_o the_o bread_n and_o wine_n but_o in_o the_o mean_a while_n where_o be_v their_o heart_n forsooth_o some_o of_o their_o heart_n be_v plunge_v over_o head_n and_o ear_n in_o covetousness_n some_o of_o they_o be_v drunken_a with_o ambition_n and_o other_o some_o their_o heart_n be_v wrap_v up_o in_o all_o kind_n of_o villainy_n for_o behold_v the_o whooremonger_n his_o mind_n be_v set_v on_o nothing_o else_o but_o upon_o lechery_n other_o upon_o drunkenness_n and_o belly_n cheer_v in_o other_o some_o be_v nothing_o but_o blasphemy_n murmur_a &_o all_o villainy_n which_o saint_n paul_n call_v earthly_a member_n 5._o colos_n 3._o 5._o if_o you_o will_v say_v he_o come_v near_o unto_o jesus_n christ_n you_o must_v mortify_v your_o earthly_a member_n what_o must_v we_o forgo_v our_o hand_n and_o foot_n no_o that_o be_v not_o his_o meaning_n but_o we_o must_v mortify_v our_o fornication_n uncleanness_n inordinate_a affection_n evil_a concupiscence_n ambition_n and_o covetousness_n which_o be_v worship_v of_o image_n and_o all_o other_o such_o like_a will_v we_o then_o seek_v for_o jesus_n christ_n in_o heaven_n then_o must_v we_o rid_v ourselves_o of_o all_o these_o earthly_a member_n for_o what_o agreement_n can_v there_o be_v between_o we_o &_o jesus_n christ_n we_o must_v not_o thrust_v he_o amongst_o our_o pollution_n but_o let_v we_o go_v unto_o he_o that_o he_o may_v rid_v we_o of_o they_o thus_o we_o see_v that_o we_o must_v not_o only_o understande_v that_o he_o in_o heaven_n but_o we_o must_v also_o mortify_v these_o earthly_a member_n which_o do_v separate_v we_o from_o he_o and_o have_v our_o mind_n occupy_v a_o loft_n how_o be_v that_o let_v we_o live_v chaste_o sober_o charitable_o temperate_o patient_o and_o altogether_o vertuos_o and_o these_o be_v the_o feather_n wherewith_o we_o must_v fly_v up_o into_o heaven_n although_o to_o speak_v proper_o we_o must_v have_v neither_o wing_n to_o fly_v with_o nor_o yet_o ladder_n to_o climb_v up_o but_o it_o be_v jesus_n christ_n that_o bring_v we_o thither_o and_o raise_v we_o up_o by_o the_o grace_n which_o i_o have_v name_v and_o which_o he_o bestow_v upon_o us._n here_o then_o we_o see_v how_o we_o must_v apply_v this_o doctrine_n to_o the_o supper_n so_o that_o when_o the_o bread_n and_o wine_n shall_v be_v deliver_v we_o we_o must_v learn_v to_o seek_v for_o all_o our_o felicity_n in_o jesus_n christ_n live_v in_o brotherly_a love_n together_o and_o every_o man_n mortify_v his_o sinful_a lust_n and_o affection_n if_o i_o feel_v myself_o to_o be_v by_o any_o mean_v carry_v away_o from_o jesus_n christ_n i_o ought_v to_o pull_v that_o mean_a from_o i_o out_o by_o the_o root_n that_o i_o may_v be_v true_o raise_v up_o to_o jesus_n christ_n not_o that_o we_o can_v be_v perfect_o raise_v up_o but_o we_o must_v labour_v to_o go_v more_o and_o more_o on_o for_o in_o deed_n the_o supper_n be_v ordain_v to_o that_o end_n and_o we_o shall_v not_o receive_v it_o only_o once_o in_o our_o life_n but_o very_o often_o to_o signify_v unto_o we_o that_o we_o must_v go_v on_o in_o this_o world_n until_o such_o time_n as_o he_o have_v deliver_v we_o from_o this_o corrupt_a body_n and_o bring_v we_o unto_o himself_o and_o according_a to_o this_o holy_a doctrine_n let_v we_o fall_v down_o before_o the_o face_n of_o our_o good_a god_n and_o acknowledge_v our_o offence_n beseech_v he_o that_o he_o will_v not_o suffer_v we_o to_o be_v so_o give_v over_o unto_o they_o as_o heretofore_o we_o have_v be_v but_o so_o wean_v we_o from_o they_o as_o that_o we_o seek_v after_o none_o other_o thing_n but_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n and_o obey_v his_o commandment_n because_o that_o be_v the_o rule_n and_o order_n by_o which_o he_o will_v have_v we_o to_o be_v bring_v unto_o himself_o and_o so_o let_v we_o all_o say_v o_o almighty_a god_n and_o heavenly_a father_n etc._n etc._n the_o second_o sermon_n of_o the_o ascension_n act_n first_o 4_o and_o when_o jesus_n have_v gather_v his_o disciple_n together_o he_o command_v they_o that_o that_o they_o acknowledge_v god_n to_o be_v their_o guide_n and_o now_o we_o be_v to_o handle_v that_o which_o follow_v that_o when_o jesus_n christ_n tell_v they_o of_o the_o promise_n of_o god_n his_o father_n he_o say_v you_o have_v hear_v of_o i_o heretofore_o as_o if_o he_o shall_v have_v say_v that_o they_o be_v not_o to_o look_v for_o that_o at_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n which_o they_o in_o their_o own_o judgement_n think_v to_o be_v best_a but_o for_o the_o thing_n which_o he_o have_v promise_v to_o be_v short_a we_o must_v here_o gather_v a_o doctrine_n unto_o ourselves_o which_o be_v this_o we_o must_v not_o build_v our_o faith_n upon_o any_o thing_n that_o we_o ourselves_o shall_v imagine_v 10.17_o rom._n 10.17_o but_o upon_o the_o promise_n of_o god_n for_o saint_n paul_n say_v that_o faith_n come_v by_o hear_v not_o by_o the_o herring_n of_o man_n speech_n and_o talk_v but_o only_o by_o the_o hear_n of_o the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o in_o deed_n because_o we_o be_v witness_n when_o he_o speak_v unto_o his_o apostle_n for_o all_o thing_n say_v he_o that_o i_o have_v hear_v of_o my_o father_n have_v i_o make_v know_v unto_o you_o 15.15_o john_n 15.15_o and_o we_o may_v at_o this_o day_n be_v full_o assure_v of_o the_o doctrine_n which_o they_o have_v publish_v unto_o we_o and_o not_o receive_v it_o from_o they_o as_o from_o mortal_a man_n but_o as_o grant_v we_o a_o stout_a and_o constant_a mind_n unto_o the_o end_n because_o that_o although_o the_o enemy_n of_o the_o truth_n be_v never_o so_o fierce_a yet_o that_o we_o may_v notwithstanding_o persevere_v &_o continue_v still_o therein_o that_o satan_n thereby_o may_v be_v vanquish_v neither_o must_v we_o be_v careful_a only_o for_o ourselves_o but_o also_o think_v of_o other_o in_o deed_n it_o be_v good_a reason_n that_o we_o shall_v be_v careful_a for_o these_o who_o be_v as_o it_o be_v in_o the_o wolf_n chape_n &_o daily_o feel_v strange_a trouble_n let_v we_o have_v this_o ever_o it_o be_v this_o then_o be_v our_o benefit_n that_o god_n in_o the_o mean_a while_o have_v grant_v we_o leisure_n earnest_o to_o consider_v of_o it_o and_o to_o put_v this_o history_n in_o practice_n which_o here_o we_o see_v to_o wit_n that_o since_o the_o holy_a ghost_n descend_v upon_o they_o who_o be_v of_o one_o accord_n as_o saint_n luke_n make_v mention_v let_v we_o learn_v to_o assemble_v ourselves_o and_o although_o we_o be_v far_o from_o blow_n yet_o let_v we_o join_v ourselves_o with_o they_o that_o fight_v by_o aid_v they_o in_o their_o conflict_n with_o our_o prayer_n and_o supplication_n and_o that_o in_o such_o sort_n as_o that_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n may_v be_v the_o guider_n of_o the_o whole_a and_o we_o for_o our_o part_n so_o zealous_o inflame_v that_o in_o stead_n of_o our_o key_n coldness_n that_o we_o may_v fervent_o and_o earnest_o call_v upon_o our_o god_n and_o as_o for_o our_o brethren_n who_o have_v need_n to_o be_v confirm_v in_o such_o assault_n wherewith_o they_o be_v attempt_v let_v our_o good_a god_n show_v that_o it_o be_v he_o himself_o which_o work_v in_o they_o and_o guide_v and_o govern_v they_o moreover_o we_o be_v thorough_o to_o consider_v of_o this_o say_n of_o consent_n and_o accord_n that_o we_o may_v be_v bring_v back_o again_o unto_o our_o head_n even_o jesus_n christ_n our_o lord_n for_o we_o see_v how_o plentiful_o the_o gospel_n be_v at_o this_o day_n preach_v but_o if_o there_o be_v a_o register_n keep_v of_o the_o faithful_a we_o shall_v find_v a_o small_a number_n of_o they_o &_o thin_a swoon_n for_o there_o be_v but_o a_o few_o place_n where_o the_o pure_a doctrine_n of_o god_n be_v preach_v and_o yet_o where_o there_o be_v any_o church_n there_o be_v in_o it_o many_o contemner_n of_o god_n and_o dissolute_a and_o profane_a people_n who_o will_v infect_v all_o the_o rest_n if_o god_n by_o his_o wonderful_a power_n preserve_v they_o not_o and_o beside_o there_o be_v some_o which_o will_v even_o continue_v still_o in_o their_o beastliness_n yea_o there_o be_v such_o a_o number_n of_o they_o at_o this_o day_n as_o that_o for_o these_o twenty_o or_o two_o and_o twenty_o year_n a_o man_n can_v perceive_v that_o they_o have_v go_v one_o step_n forward_o in_o the_o knowledge_n of_o god_n for_o they_o no_o more_o know_v faith_n nor_o worship_n they_o very_a bruit_n beast_n other_o some_o there_o be_v who_o although_o they_o have_v knowledge_n sufficient_a yet_o want_v courage_n and_o boldness_n and_o be_v altogether_o drowsy_a make_v no_o reckon_n either_o of_o god_n or_o of_o his_o word_n so_o that_o the_o number_n of_o the_o true_a sheep_n &_o lamb_n be_v very_o small_a now_o we_o see_v by_o the_o way_n what_o scope_n and_o elbow_n room_n the_o devil_n have_v all_o europe_n over_o for_o there_o all_o his_o leasing_n deceit_n and_o illusion_n be_v receive_v and_o the_o world_n be_v so_o bewitch_v as_o that_o it_o be_v impossible_a to_o bring_v it_o again_o in_o frame_n we_o see_v how_o man_n do_v not_o only_o set_v themselves_o against_o god_n &_o witting_o blaspheme_v he_o but_o also_o be_v furious_o inflame_v that_o a_o man_n will_v think_v they_o will_v pull_v the_o son_n out_o of_o heaven_n &_o take_v his_o light_n from_o he_o now_o when_o we_o see_v all_o this_o gear_n we_o have_v need_n join_v ourselves_o again_o unto_o our_o head_n christ_n jesus_n our_o lord_n for_o what_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o this_o contempt_n and_o ungodliness_n &_o of_o so_o many_o rebellion_n &_o mockery_n in_o the_o world_n but_o because_o grace_n be_v not_o grant_v to_o all_o man_n to_o be_v lead_v under_o this_o excellent_a shepherd_n who_o god_n his_o father_n have_v appoint_v for_o us._n and_o we_o know_v that_o they_o who_o he_o keep_v
god_n and_o herein_o saint_n peter_n reprove_v drunkenness_n and_o show_v it_o to_o be_v a_o very_a dishonest_a thing_n for_o a_o man_n to_o be_v drink_v in_o the_o morning_n and_o yet_o we_o shall_v find_v a_o great_a many_o more_o than_o need_v that_o be_v give_v to_o be_v so_o drunkenne_n as_o that_o they_o have_v neither_o wit_n nor_o reason_n and_o some_o of_o they_o will_v not_o be_v drink_v with_o that_o which_o they_o take_v in_o the_o morning_n but_o will_v be_v so_o blockish_a with_o their_o wine_n which_o they_o gull_v in_o the_o evening_n as_o that_o a_o man_n will_v think_v they_o have_v do_v nothing_o else_o but_o byb_v from_o the_o peep_v of_o the_o day_n another_o sort_n there_o be_v who_o for_o fear_n they_o shall_v not_o have_v drink_n enough_o will_v begin_v so_o early_o as_o that_o they_o will_v be_v drink_v all_o day_n long_o and_o thereupon_o the_o wine_n so_o bereave_v they_o of_o their_o wit_n and_o understanding_n as_o that_o they_o can_v neither_o go_v nor_o stand_v and_o therefore_o saint_n peter_n say_v that_o these_o man_n here_o be_v not_o drink_v whereby_o he_o declare_v that_o god_n be_v high_o displease_v therewith_o now_o we_o be_v in_o this_o place_n to_o note_v that_o the_o jew_n so_o abhor_a drunkenness_n as_o that_o when_o any_o of_o they_o will_v fall_v to_o be_v drink_v they_o will_v be_v sure_a to_o drink_v drink_v in_o the_o night_n because_o they_o be_v ashamed_a that_o any_o other_o shall_v see_v they_o and_o herein_o we_o see_v that_o man_n be_v more_o shamefast_a at_o those_o day_n than_o they_o be_v in_o these_o because_o at_o that_o time_n they_o love_v to_o do_v it_o in_o the_o night_n season_n &_o now_o they_o make_v no_o reckon_n to_o be_v drink_v at_o noon_n day_n and_o then_o forsooth_o they_o must_v needs_o have_v a_o nap_n &_o so_o keep_v the_o liquor_n warm_a in_o the_o press_n and_o this_o we_o be_v sure_a to_o see_v by_o they_o that_o they_o will_v show_v themselves_o what_o they_o be_v even_o at_o the_o sermon_n time_n for_o you_o shall_v not_o see_v they_o scarsce_o a_o hour_n at_o the_o hear_n of_o the_o word_n of_o god_n but_o they_o will_v forthwith_o manifest_v the_o very_a effect_n of_o their_o drunkenness_n by_o their_o drowsiness_n so_o that_o they_o receive_v no_o benefit_n in_o the_o whole_a world_n by_o come_v thither_o and_o no_o marvel_n for_o the_o wine_n and_o the_o meat_n be_v not_o perfect_o digest_v by_o reason_n of_o the_o over_o gorge_v of_o themselves_o wherein_o they_o exceed_v the_o very_a bruit_n beast_n cause_v they_o to_o be_v so_o heavy_a a_o sleep_n yea_o and_o you_o shall_v many_o time_n see_v they_o sleep_v at_o a_o sermon_n in_o the_o morning_n whenas_o a_o man_n will_v think_v they_o have_v neither_o eat_v nor_o drink_v but_o herein_o they_o show_v what_o great_a delight_n they_o have_v in_o the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o to_o this_o they_o can_v make_v no_o excuse_n because_o they_o come_v present_o from_o their_o rest_n and_o now_o to_o the_o matter_n s._n peter_n speak_v according_a to_o the_o manner_n and_o custom_n that_o then_o be_v say_v it_o be_v not_o like_a that_o these_o man_n be_v drunken_a since_o it_o be_v but_o the_o third_o hour_n of_o the_o day_n he_o now_o here_o apply_v this_o miracle_n which_o be_v do_v unto_o his_o doctrine_n for_o the_o holy_a ghost_n be_v not_o give_v to_o the_o apostle_n that_o they_o shall_v be_v silent_a whenas_o any_o thing_n be_v move_v which_o tend_v to_o the_o glorify_v of_o the_o work_v of_o god_n but_o that_o they_o shall_v be_v strong_a constant_o to_o deliver_v out_o the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o publish_v the_o gospel_n according_o as_o our_o lord_n jesus_n have_v grant_v they_o the_o mean_a and_o therefore_o we_o see_v that_o god_n wrought_v wonderful_o and_o that_o the_o preach_n of_o the_o gospel_n throughout_o the_o whole_a world_n by_o so_o small_a a_o number_n come_v not_o from_o man_n now_o s._n peter_n in_o his_o sermon_n show_v a_o holy_a boldness_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n and_o geve_v they_o to_o understand_v who_o make_v a_o mock_n at_o the_o miracle_n that_o be_v do_v and_o think_v not_o reverent_o of_o it_o that_o jesus_n christ_n manife_v not_o himself_o unto_o those_o which_o scorn_n and_o scoff_n at_o he_o work_v moreover_o when_o he_o say_v and_o all_o you_o that_o dwell_v at_o jerusalem_n he_o speak_v universal_o to_o all_o man_n and_o yet_o it_o appertain_v not_o but_o unto_o those_o which_o make_v a_o scoff_n at_o the_o miracle_n for_o there_o be_v many_o at_o that_o time_n who_o reverent_o accompany_v the_o apostle_n that_o great_o wonder_v at_o the_o matter_n why_o do_v s._n peter_n then_o attribute_v it_o to_o all_o those_o that_o jest_v thereat_o forsooth_o he_o do_v it_o to_o this_o end_n and_o purpose_n that_o by_o the_o reprove_v of_o this_o their_o fault_n he_o mean_v too_o do_v good_a too_o all_o the_o company_n and_o by_o that_o occasion_n confirm_v so_o much_o the_o rather_o the_o heart_n of_o all_o such_o as_o be_v abash_v and_o make_v they_o in_o a_o admiration_n and_o reverence_n of_o the_o work_v of_o god_n by_o utterlye_o refuse_v the_o foolish_a and_o fantastical_a opinion_n of_o all_o these_o and_o such_o like_o gybers_n and_o even_o so_o will_v we_o likewise_o at_o this_o day_n do_v for_o if_o there_o be_v any_o scoffer_n amongst_o we_o and_o that_o we_o mean_v to_o reproove_v this_o fault_n we_o will_v cry_v out_o against_o all_o although_o the_o whole_a company_n be_v not_o to_o be_v charge_v therewith_o and_o yet_o no_o doubt_n of_o it_o all_z they_o who_o conscience_n be_v guilty_a will_v sure_o condemn_v themselves_o for_o their_o own_o wickedness_n will_v sufficient_o witness_v against_o they_o without_o be_v charge_v therewith_o or_o yet_o the_o matter_n by_o piecemeal_o lay_v open_a nevertheless_o it_o be_v meet_v that_o man_n sometime_o shall_v somewhat_o be_v narrow_o press_v and_o find_v fault_n with_o as_o it_o be_v by_o name_n and_o to_o be_v remember_v and_o point_a at_o with_o the_o finger_n for_o their_o offence_n because_o they_o will_v then_o be_v more_o ashamed_a then_o if_o they_o be_v general_o reproove_v howbeit_o it_o be_v a_o wonder_n to_o see_v that_o some_o man_n can_v in_o no_o wise_n abide_v to_o be_v rebuke_v of_o their_o fault_n although_o it_o be_v general_o do_v for_o thus_o they_o will_v cover_v it_o why_o say_v they_o although_o there_o be_v a_o great_a many_o guilty_a of_o the_o vice_n which_o be_v speak_v of_o yet_o be_v there_o some_o innocent_a thereof_o and_o so_o we_o shall_v hear_v they_o murmur_v say_v why_o cry_v he_o out_o thus_o against_o all_o man_n for_o if_o there_o be_v any_o such_o must_v he_o therefore_o reprove_v all_o the_o rest_n and_o speak_v it_o so_o general_o thus_o we_o see_v how_o all_o of_o we_o continual_o murmur_v against_o doctrine_n and_o yet_o we_o see_v that_o although_o there_o be_v but_o a_o very_a few_o which_o make_v a_o jest_n at_o this_o miracle_n here_o speak_v of_o yet_o s._n peter_n deliver_v his_o speech_n unto_o all_o man_n when_o he_o say_v all_o you_o that_o dwell_v in_o jerusalem_n be_v this_o know_v unto_o you_o that_o these_o be_v not_o drink_v as_o you_o think_v and_o therefore_o when_o we_o see_v that_o s_n peter_n speak_v after_o this_o manner_n let_v not_o we_o be_v wise_a than_o the_o holy_a ghost_n and_o when_o there_o shall_v be_v a_o fault_n which_o be_v not_o in_o all_o man_n yet_o let_v not_o we_o for_o all_o that_o cease_v to_o tell_v all_o man_n of_o it_o and_o although_o there_o may_v be_v some_o which_o be_v not_o guilty_a thereof_o yet_o let_v they_o by_o this_o example_n take_v heed_n they_o murmur_v not_o because_o they_o know_v themselves_o to_o be_v void_a of_o such_o a_o vice_n and_o yet_o if_o they_o shall_v be_v more_o narrow_o look_v into_o it_o may_v be_v they_o will_v be_v find_v guilty_a of_o a_o thousand_o other_o as_o great_a let_v we_o now_o see_v what_o saint_n peter_n mean_v by_o the_o make_n of_o this_o sermon_n forsooth_o his_o intent_n be_v to_o bring_v the_o people_n to_o the_o knowledge_n of_o jesus_n christ_n and_o this_o be_v indeed_o the_o end_n why_o the_o tongue_n be_v give_v to_o the_o apostle_n for_o the_o diversity_n of_o tongue_n do_v even_o shut_v up_o the_o gate_n against_o the_o gospel_n so_o that_o without_o the_o knowledge_n of_o they_o it_o seem_v impossible_a to_o have_v the_o gospel_n to_o be_v preach_v throughout_o the_o world_n and_o therefore_o saint_n peter_n say_v if_o you_o remember_v the_o pprophecy_n of_o the_o prophet_n joel_n the_o promise_n therein_o contain_v be_v accomplish_v by_o the_o come_n of_o jesus_n christ_n for_o after_o the_o threaten_n of_o the_o prophet_n
call_v upon_o the_o name_n of_o god_n shall_v be_v save_v and_o thereupon_o necessary_o ensue_v that_o he_o which_o call_v not_o upon_o he_o shall_v be_v damn_v and_o forsomuch_o as_o we_o be_v so_o cold_a and_o so_o easy_o withdraw_v from_o the_o call_n upon_o the_o name_n of_o god_n the_o prophet_n by_o the_o say_n go_v before_o his_o meaning_n be_v to_o declare_v that_o we_o must_v not_o leave_v of_o call_v upon_o his_o majesty_n no_o not_o when_o we_o be_v in_o the_o midst_n of_o all_o the_o great_a trouble_n which_o may_v come_v unto_o we_o for_o although_o heaven_n and_o earth_n shall_v conspire_v against_o we_o yet_o must_v we_o even_o then_o call_v upon_o the_o majesty_n of_o our_o god_n both_o with_o heart_n &_o mouth_n and_o with_o all_o power_n and_o strength_n howbeit_o it_o be_v not_o enough_o that_o we_o say_v with_o open_a mouth_n a_o pater_fw-la noster_fw-la in_o latin_a or_o else_o our_o father_n which_o be_v in_o heaven_n in_o our_o mother_n tongue_n except_o it_o be_v say_v with_o the_o right_a affection_n of_o the_o heart_n ground_v upon_o faith_n for_o otherwise_o we_o may_v say_v over_o this_o prayer_n ten_o twenty_o and_o thirty_o time_n and_o yet_o they_o shall_v be_v but_o word_n wherewith_o to_o beat_v the_o air_n i_o will_v not_o speak_v of_o the_o entermedle_v of_o the_o aue_fw-la maria_n among_o think_v by_o such_o silly_a gaud_n that_o they_o true_o call_v upon_o the_o name_n of_o god_n as_o he_o require_v for_o sure_o such_o kind_n of_o people_n be_v far_o from_o the_o true_a call_n upon_o the_o name_n of_o god_n but_o be_v even_o like_a witch_n and_o sorcerer_n who_o can_v not_o forget_v their_o old_a devilish_a superstition_n and_o therefore_o we_o must_v not_o marvel_v overmuch_o at_o such_o relic_n of_o satan_n 10.14_o rom._n 10.14_o because_o they_o never_o have_v nor_o yet_o have_v any_o faith_n in_o jesus_n christ_n for_o how_o shall_v they_o as_o saint_n paul_n say_v call_v upon_o he_o who_o they_o have_v not_o beléeve_v and_o this_o place_n be_v worthy_a the_o note_n because_o saint_n paul_n tell_v we_o that_o when_o the_o call_n upon_o the_o name_n of_o god_n be_v speak_v of_o that_o we_o must_v seek_v after_o he_o as_o after_o our_o father_n since_o we_o know_v that_o all_o the_o benefit_n which_o we_o have_v come_v from_o he_o and_o that_o he_o be_v ready_a to_o receive_v we_o so_o soon_o as_o we_o turn_v unto_o he_o for_o else_o what_o courage_n may_v we_o have_v to_o crave_v any_o thing_n at_o his_o hand_n if_o we_o be_v not_o sure_a of_o this_o and_o therefore_o let_v we_o be_v full_o persuade_v that_o when_o we_o in_o truth_n call_v upon_o the_o lord_n our_o god_n that_o he_o will_v receive_v us._n we_o see_v then_o by_o this_o what_o a_o fantastical_a imagination_n the_o papistical_a fondlinge_n have_v for_o thus_o they_o say_v that_o we_o must_v in_o no_o wise_n presume_v that_o god_n will_v hear_v we_o when_o we_o call_v upon_o he_o and_o their_o reason_n forsooth_o be_v this_o forsomuch_o as_o we_o know_v not_o whether_o we_o be_v in_o the_o state_n of_o grace_n or_o not_o for_o this_o say_v they_o be_v too_o too_o great_a presumption_n to_o think_v why_o what_o be_v then_o to_o be_v do_v forsooth_o they_o tell_v we_o that_o we_o must_v pray_v doubtful_o and_o that_o it_o be_v sufficient_a if_o we_o remit_v all_o to_o their_o mother_n holy_a church_n to_o wit_n that_o we_o must_v have_v this_o answer_n always_o ready_a in_o our_o mouth_n i_o believe_v as_o the_o holy_a church_n beléeve_v thus_o we_o see_v how_o that_o they_o will_v have_v our_o faith_n to_o be_v doubtful_a and_o uncertain_a now_o saint_n paul_n tell_v we_o that_o god_n like_v not_o of_o this_o gear_n for_o he_o say_v that_o the_o gospel_n be_v not_o preach_v unto_o we_o to_o make_v we_o stand_v in_o doubt_n but_o to_o assure_v we_o of_o our_o salvation_n and_o therefore_o we_o may_v easy_o judge_v what_o popish_a faith_n be_v wherein_o we_o be_v nuzz_v in_o the_o time_n of_o ignorance_n wherefore_o let_v we_o understande_v that_o god_n have_v bestow_v a_o singular_a grace_n upon_o we_o in_o pull_v we_o out_o of_o that_o darkness_n of_o error_n and_o superstition_n wherein_o we_o be_v and_o have_v give_v we_o his_o gospel_n to_o bring_v we_o into_o the_o way_n of_o salvation_n when_o we_o then_o shall_v consider_v of_o all_o these_o thing_n we_o ought_v to_o sigh_v and_o groan_v see_v that_o god_n of_o his_o great_a goodness_n have_v choose_v we_o among_o all_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o nation_n to_o bestow_v the_o knowledge_n of_o his_o most_o holy_a and_o bless_a word_n now_o this_o be_v the_o mischief_n that_o be_v in_o popery_n as_o have_v be_v already_o say_v when_o as_o they_o say_v that_o we_o may_v not_o in_o full_a assurance_n call_v upon_o god_n for_o that_o say_v they_o be_v presumption_n and_o therefore_o that_o he_o be_v to_o be_v call_v upon_o doubtful_o neither_o be_v they_o the_o simple_a and_o common_a sort_n of_o people_n which_o do_v maintain_v this_o but_o even_o the_o great_a and_o chief_a doctor_n and_o such_o as_o be_v think_v to_o have_v all_o the_o holy_a scripture_n imprint_v in_o their_o heart_n in_o deed_n
