build_v our_o faith_n on_o the_o word_n of_o man_n but_o of_o god_n and_o great_a reason_n for_o faith_n uphold_v a_o great_a weight_n even_o our_o salvation_n lie_v upon_o it_o faith_n in_o christ_n therefore_o need_v a_o strong_a foundation_n and_o such_o a_o one_o be_v god_n word_n that_o which_o be_v build_v on_o it_o be_v build_v on_o a_o sure_a rock_n man_n word_n be_v sandy_a not_o able_a to_o bear_v up_o any_o thing_n faith_n and_o thus_o have_v brief_o note_v as_o i_o promise_v other_o thing_n in_o the_o text_n i_o will_v return_v to_o the_o point_n follow_v in_o the_o division_n the_o first_o be_v his_o baptism_n the_o next_o his_o rejoice_v for_o his_o own_o and_o his_o household_n believe_v the_o three_o contain_v certain_a duty_n of_o mercy_n and_o love_n as_o his_o bring_v they_o out_o of_o prison_n into_o his_o house_n his_o wash_v their_o stripe_n and_o refresh_v of_o their_o hungry_a body_n with_o meat_n where_o first_o note_v this_o general_o faith_n that_o good_a work_n follow_v faith_n as_o the_o heat_n do_v the_o fire_n so_o soon_o as_o the_o thief_n believe_v he_o confess_v christ_n &_o show_v other_o fruit_n of_o his_o faith_n such_o as_o in_o that_o time_n he_o can_v so_o this_o man_n do_v the_o same_o by_o his_o love_n to_o god_n servant_n and_o he_o do_v it_o immediate_o even_o the_o same_o hour_n of_o the_o night_n as_o they_o be_v ready_a to_o teach_v even_o so_o be_v he_o to_o minister_v to_o their_o necessity_n but_o this_o doctrine_n be_v manifest_a look_v we_o into_o the_o particular_n of_o the_o which_o i_o will_v begin_v with_o that_o which_o most_o near_o concern_v this_o matter_n and_o that_o be_v the_o seal_n and_o confirm_v of_o his_o faith_n baptism_n and_o the_o make_n of_o it_o sure_a unto_o he_o that_o he_o circumcision_n be_v unto_o the_o father_n in_o the_o old_a testament_n object_n but_o what_o haste_n you_o will_v perhaps_o say_v 4.11_o can_v not_o that_o be_v defer_v till_o day_n at_o least_n for_o it_o be_v say_v he_o be_v baptize_v in_o the_o same_o hour_n of_o the_o night_n after_o they_o have_v preach_v to_o he_o and_o his_o household_n which_o be_v a_o little_a after_o midnight_n answ_n i_o answer_v it_o be_v not_o to_o be_v marvel_v at_o that_o he_o desire_v speed_n in_o that_o so_o weighty_a a_o matter_n for_o they_o that_o have_v faith_n think_v long_o till_o they_o may_v have_v it_o seal_v and_o ratify_v and_o be_v there_o not_o good_a reason_n thereof_o if_o a_o man_n have_v the_o write_n of_o a_o great_a inheritance_n pass_v over_o to_o he_o will_v he_o not_o think_v it_o long_o till_o he_o have_v the_o seal_n and_o great_a matter_n be_v that_o night_n pass_v over_o by_o the_o lord_n to_o he_o even_o heaven_n life_n salvation_n and_o happiness_n these_o therefore_o he_o desire_v to_o have_v god_n seal_v set_v unto_o and_o so_o as_o he_o may_v have_v this_o he_o care_v not_o for_o his_o sleep_n or_o his_o ease_n neither_o fear_n he_o any_o trouble_n that_o may_v ensue_v upon_o it_o doct._n and_o this_o teach_v all_o such_o as_o god_n endue_v with_o faith_n confirm_v when_o they_o have_v seek_v it_o earnest_o to_o seek_v by_o all_o mean_n speedy_o to_o have_v it_o confirm_v unto_o they_o and_o to_o get_v all_o possible_a testimony_n thereof_o for_o as_o nothing_o in_o the_o world_n be_v so_o precious_a as_o it_o be_v and_o therefore_o not_o with_o like_a care_n to_o be_v seek_v so_o neither_o be_v any_o thing_n with_o like_a regard_n to_o be_v preserve_v and_o witness_v to_o they_o that_o have_v it_o which_o i_o speak_v as_o well_o for_o the_o ignorant_o sake_n who_o know_v not_o that_o there_o may_v many_o evidence_n be_v gather_v of_o their_o salvation_n as_o to_o stir_v up_o those_o who_o have_v better_a understanding_n who_o though_o they_o know_v it_o yet_o find_v many_o way_n to_o hinder_v themselves_o from_o this_o benefit_n for_o it_o may_v just_o be_v complain_v of_o that_o it_o be_v too_o slight_o look_v after_o of_o the_o most_o part_n but_o to_o set_v down_o any_o of_o they_o here_o i_o forbear_v because_o i_o have_v do_v it_o in_o many_o other_o place_n and_o some_o follow_v immediate_o to_o be_v mention_v joy._n the_o next_o fruit_n of_o faith_n which_o also_o to_o make_v good_a my_o last_o speech_n be_v a_o infallible_a token_n of_o eternal_a life_n to_o they_o that_o have_v it_o be_v joy_n for_o that_o he_o our_o understanding_n clear_v and_o the_o mist_n and_o veil_n of_o our_o ignorance_n remedy_v but_o our_o affection_n be_v also_o whet_v on_o to_o a_o great_a delight_n and_o joy_n in_o the_o goodness_n of_o god_n already_o know_v unto_o us._n our_o memory_n also_o be_v continual_o renew_a and_o refresh_v when_o we_o hear_v the_o same_o or_o the_o like_a doctrine_n promise_n and_o unto_o their_o word_n the_o second_o thing_n be_v what_o the_o lord_n wish_v to_o they_o and_o that_o be_v such_o a_o heart_n as_o may_v suit_v with_o their_o word_n from_o which_o only_a and_o from_o no_o other_o heart_n this_o fear_n of_o god_n and_o obedience_n to_o his_o will_n which_o he_o like_v of_o can_v come_v in_o these_o word_n oh_o that_o there_o be_v such_o a_o heart_n in_o they_o to_o fear_v i_o and_o to_o keep_v all_o my_o commandment_n always_o the_o three_o be_v the_o fruit_n of_o such_o a_o heart_n and_o life_n and_o that_o be_v prosperity_n and_o welfare_n to_o they_o and_o to_o their_o child_n for_o ever_o heart_n now_o to_o begin_v with_o the_o first_o this_o mix_a speech_n of_o the_o lord_n which_o i_o so_o call_v because_o it_o commend_v somewhat_o in_o the_o people_n answer_n and_o dislike_v somewhat_o in_o they_o it_o allow_v their_o word_n but_o condemn_v their_o heart_n this_o mix_a speech_n of_o the_o lord_n i_o say_v teach_v we_o clear_o that_o man_n may_v possible_o utter_v good_a word_n and_o yet_o themselves_o be_v without_o grace_n their_o word_n may_v be_v good_a but_o their_o heart_n naught_o doct._n so_o that_o while_o they_o commend_v religion_n the_o preach_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o the_o profession_n thereof_o yet_o for_o all_o that_o they_o may_v be_v unprofitable_a in_o their_o life_n and_o not_o sound_a and_o upright_o in_o their_o heart_n without_o which_o their_o speech_n help_v they_o nothing_o and_o if_o it_o be_v say_v it_o be_v not_o sufficient_a for_o the_o proof_n of_o this_o doctrine_n that_o be_v here_o say_v in_o the_o text_n for_o possible_o it_o may_v be_v gather_v amiss_o let_v it_o be_v prove_v by_o two_o or_o three_o witness_n that_o there_o may_v be_v no_o exception_n bring_v against_o it_o as_o that_o for_o example_n in_o the_o 50._o psalm_n verse_n 16._o where_o you_o may_v find_v this_o unto_o the_o wicked_a say_v god_n what_o have_v thou_o to_o do_v 50.16_o to_o take_v my_o word_n in_o thy_o mouth_n and_o hate_v to_o be_v reform_v what_o need_v there_o any_o explanation_n of_o these_o word_n the_o lord_n vehement_o reprove_v they_o for_o speak_v of_o his_o word_n as_o though_o namely_o the_o prick_n of_o conscience_n believe_v about_o the_o second_o which_o be_v faith_n these_o two_o caveat_n be_v to_o be_v mark_v the_o one_o that_o a_o man_n seek_v faith_n for_o no_o other_o shall_v find_v it_o believe_v not_o too_o hasty_o and_o rash_o that_o be_v without_o warrant_n of_o the_o scripture_n and_o word_n of_o god_n the_o other_o that_o have_v warrant_n note_v he_o refuse_v not_o to_o believe_v neither_o reason_n against_o it_o but_o apply_v it_o to_o himself_o and_o resist_v doubt_v both_o be_v alike_o necessary_a the_o first_o for_o the_o bold_a and_o such_o as_o feel_v their_o sin_n to_o be_v no_o great_a burden_n to_o their_o conscience_n and_o yet_o of_o all_o other_o be_v most_o ready_a to_o affirm_v that_o they_o believe_v in_o jesus_n christ_n which_o he_o himself_o flat_o deny_v say_v i_o come_v not_o to_o call_v the_o righteous_a that_o be_v such_o as_o feel_v as_o little_a burden_n of_o their_o sin_n as_o if_o they_o be_v righteous_a but_o sinner_n who_o feel_v the_o burden_n of_o their_o sin_n as_o a_o debtor_n do_v his_o debt_n unto_o repentance_n the_o second_o caveat_n be_v as_o necessary_a for_o the_o afflict_a conscience_n who_o though_o he_o have_v right_a to_o the_o promise_n by_o christ_n free_a grant_n yet_o through_o weakness_n and_o want_n of_o experience_n be_v hold_v from_o believe_v and_o clasp_v about_o it_o and_o all_o because_o he_o do_v not_o due_o consider_v his_o liberty_n and_o the_o warrant_n that_o he_o have_v from_o christ_n for_o his_o so_o do_v wherein_o although_o i_o deny_v not_o but_o that_o god_n providence_n rule_v yet_o the_o party_n offend_v for_o that_o he_o do_v not_o embrace_v that_o which_o be_v free_o give_v he_o by_o god_n and_o by_o mean_n thereof_o he_o can_v praise_v and_o be_v thankful_a to_o god_n for_o it_o about_o the_o three_o point_n that_o be_v necessary_o require_v to_o make_v the_o heart_n good_a which_o be_v sanctification_n sanctification_n these_o two_o watchword_n be_v to_o be_v receive_v the_o one_o that_o he_o of_o who_o we_o speak_v do_v love_n goodness_n and_o loath_a evil_n not_o some_o one_o or_o few_o lest_o he_o deceive_v himself_o about_o it_o but_o all_o nor_o in_o private_a respect_n but_o because_o it_o be_v evil_a and_o hate_a of_o god_n the_o other_o that_o these_o two_o namely_o to_o loath_a and_o love_v be_v constant_o settle_v in_o he_o for_o continuance_n the_o reason_n of_o both_o be_v manifest_a as_o of_o the_o former_a for_o if_o one_o sin_n shall_v be_v loathe_v and_o another_o love_a some_o dislike_v and_o shame_v and_o other_o delight_v in_o and_o embrace_v what_o can_v be_v more_o ridiculous_a and_o further_o off_o from_o the_o nature_n of_o true_a repentance_n for_o the_o offence_n to_o man_n and_o the_o dishonour_n which_o may_v arise_v to_o god_n thereby_o in_o some_o few_o evil_a action_n note_v can_v not_o be_v satisfy_v nor_o answer_v by_o many_o good_a action_n a_o thing_n worthy_a to_o be_v note_v see_v many_o take_v liberty_n against_o their_o conscience_n to_o do_v what_o they_o desire_v to_o do_v and_o yet_o will_v be_v count_v repentant_a person_n as_o well_o as_o the_o best_a and_o this_o be_v say_v of_o the_o first_o of_o these_o two_o caveat_n for_o the_o second_o if_o a_o man_n shall_v be_v very_o forward_o in_o abhor_v sin_n at_o the_o first_o and_o afterward_o shall_v grow_v slothful_a and_o careless_a and_o make_v no_o conscience_n of_o wicked_a desire_n and_o break_v out_o into_o looseness_n of_o heart_n this_o be_v enough_o to_o blemish_v his_o sanctification_n how_o sound_a soever_o it_o may_v have_v seem_v if_o not_o to_o bewray_v it_o to_o have_v be_v mere_a hypocrisy_n which_o of_o the_o two_o will_v be_v think_v most_o likely_a thus_o i_o have_v say_v that_o which_o i_o think_v meet_v of_o this_o matter_n to_o help_v he_o that_o desire_v it_o to_o attain_v such_o a_o heart_n as_o bring_v forth_o the_o fear_n of_o god_n even_o that_o which_o god_n require_v and_o see_v thus_o much_o be_v necessary_a and_o no_o less_o note_v to_o get_v such_o a_o heart_n namely_o to_o have_v it_o break_v heal_v again_o by_o faith_n and_o mortify_v and_o see_v so_o great_a heed_n be_v to_o be_v take_v that_o all_o these_o be_v wrought_v in_o the_o heart_n aright_o and_o indeed_o all_o may_v see_v good_a reason_n why_o god_n wish_v such_o a_o heart_n to_o be_v in_o all_o those_o who_o will_v be_v accept_v of_o he_o and_o what_o a_o rich_a jewel_n and_o treasure_n such_o a_o heart_n be_v and_o by_o necessary_a consequence_n how_o ill_o it_o will_v go_v the_o thirst_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o needful_a to_o preserve_v the_o spiritual_a life_n by_o come_v and_o buy_v without_o money_n he_o mean_v a_o receive_v free_o and_o for_o nothing_o by_o faith_n confident_o and_o with_o god_n good_a like_n enjoy_v and_o take_v his_o part_n in_o they_o even_o as_o he_o that_o buy_v house_n or_o land_n with_o his_o money_n may_v possess_v the_o same_o safe_o as_o his_o own_o and_o this_o be_v say_v of_o the_o meaning_n of_o the_o first_o verse_n in_o the_o second_o he_o reprove_v those_o among_o the_o people_n 2._o who_o refuse_v the_o best_a thing_n offer_v they_o by_o god_n and_o that_o free_o and_o willing_o yet_o spare_v neither_o cost_n nor_o labour_n for_o those_o which_o be_v nothing_o profitable_a and_o exhort_v they_o to_o turn_v from_o that_o error_n and_o delusion_n and_o to_o take_v that_o counsel_n from_o he_o which_o will_v be_v sound_o for_o their_o benefit_n and_o comfort_n two_o thus_o much_o for_o the_o meaning_n the_o down_o in_o the_o first_o verse_n namely_o in_o the_o free_a offer_n which_o god_n make_v by_o the_o prophet_n which_o thing_n be_v three_o first_o to_o who_o he_o make_v it_o that_o be_v to_o they_o that_o thirst_n and_o to_o no_o other_o for_o so_o be_v the_o word_n ho_o every_o one_o that_o thirst_v come_v second_o what_o he_o offer_v to_o they_o even_o whatsoever_o good_a thing_n will_v grace_v and_o eternal_a life_n for_o they_o who_o do_v so_o must_v needs_o have_v knowledge_n to_o discern_v the_o price_n and_o excellency_n of_o they_o and_o also_o feel_v their_o own_o need_n and_o necessity_n of_o they_o that_o they_o do_v but_o pine_v and_o be_v as_o it_o be_v starve_v for_o want_v of_o they_o and_o for_o all_o this_o who_o be_v more_o contemptible_a either_o in_o theit_n own_o eye_n or_o the_o eye_n of_o other_o than_o such_o be_v and_o yet_o these_o be_v call_v forth_o by_o the_o prophet_n as_o we_o see_v from_o among_o all_o other_o while_o they_o with_o the_o wander_v here_o on_o earth_n but_o be_v ever_o thirst_v after_o one_o good_a thing_n or_o other_o or_o some_o new_a measure_n of_o grace_n whatsoever_o they_o have_v be_v satisfy_v in_o already_o for_o otherwise_o they_o can_v not_o be_v include_v among_o they_o to_o who_o this_o promise_n be_v make_v neither_o have_v they_o their_o part_n in_o it_o when_o it_o be_v say_v ho_o all_o you_o that_o thirst_n come_v to_o the_o water_n and_o drink_n from_o hence_o it_o be_v that_o some_o have_v attain_v to_o true_a faith_n yet_o as_o fervent_o desire_v to_o preserve_v and_o strengthen_v the_o same_o as_o they_o desire_v when_o they_o be_v before_o in_o great_a fear_n and_o doubt_v to_o have_v any_o measure_n at_o all_o thereof_o and_o so_o the_o lord_n require_v that_o we_o high_o esteem_v desire_v and_o long_o after_o the_o same_o and_o the_o salvation_n which_o we_o wait_v for_o thereby_o even_o as_o at_o the_o first_o acquaintance_n with_o they_o we_o do_v in_o like_a manner_n god_n faithful_a people_n know_v that_o he_o be_v as_o a_o flow_a fountain_n rich_a in_o all_o good_a thing_n and_o never_o draw_v dry_a they_o thirst_v still_o after_o other_o particular_a grace_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n when_o he_o have_v satisfy_v they_o with_o the_o former_a and_o namely_o hope_v love_n patience_n meekness_n humbleness_n strength_n to_o bear_v affliction_n and_o such_o like_a and_o he_o do_v no_o soon_o stir_v up_o in_o they_o the_o desire_n and_o longing_n after_o these_o but_o he_o do_v withal_o give_v they_o his_o word_n and_o promise_n that_o he_o will_v bestow_v the_o same_o upon_o they_o even_o as_o he_o here_o speak_v say_v he_o all_o you_o that_o thirst_n come_v to_o the_o water_n and_o drink_n and_o in_o like_a manner_n he_o speak_v in_o hosea_n 14.6.7_o when_o he_o have_v say_v that_o he_o will_v forgive_v all_o their_o iniquity_n and_o love_v they_o free_o he_o add_v i_o will_v be_v as_o the_o dew_n to_o israel_n he_o shall_v grow_v as_o the_o lily_n and_o fasten_v his_o root_n as_o the_o tree_n of_o lebanon_n his_o branch_n shall_v spread_v and_o his_o beauty_n shall_v be_v as_o the_o olive_n tree_n and_o his_o smell_n as_o lebanon_n by_o all_o which_o the_o lord_n mean_v that_o when_o his_o people_n turn_v to_o he_o and_o long_v for_o his_o mercy_n shall_v obtain_v it_o to_o cover_v their_o sin_n they_o shall_v as_o the_o dry_a ground_n thirst_v for_o the_o dew_n and_o rain_n and_o be_v satisfy_v therewith_o so_o shall_v they_o i_o say_v be_v refresh_v with_o the_o dew_n of_o his_o grace_n to_o grow_v up_o out_o of_o their_o old_a sin_n flourish_v in_o his_o church_n as_o the_o plant_n constant_o settle_v therein_o as_o the_o tree_n deep_o root_v and_o provoke_v other_o to_o follow_v and_o
word_n of_o the_o prophet_n fall_v upon_o they_o and_o with_o a_o mighty_a weight_n press_v they_o down_o when_o he_o say_v why_o do_v you_o bestow_v your_o cost_n and_o care_n and_o yet_o not_o for_o that_o which_o will_v do_v you_o good_a neither_o be_v able_a to_o satisfy_v your_o soul_n with_o the_o food_n and_o bread_n of_o life_n all_o which_o the_o best_a that_o can_v be_v say_v of_o it_o be_v this_o that_o it_o be_v but_o lose_a labour_n and_o they_o in_o so_o do_v may_v just_o be_v compare_v to_o they_o who_o bestow_v their_o money_n upon_o their_o lust_n in_o sundry_a mispending_a of_o which_o shall_v be_v employ_v upon_o they_o and_o their_o family_n gospeler_n but_o to_o pass_v from_o they_o there_o be_v another_o kind_n of_o man_n who_o the_o prophet_n reproof_n do_v reach_v unto_o as_o well_o as_o unto_o those_o and_o such_o they_o be_v as_o although_o they_o hold_v the_o truth_n in_o judgement_n and_o do_v worship_n god_n in_o outward_a manner_n yet_o they_o draw_v near_o to_o he_o with_o their_o body_n 2d_o their_o heart_n be_v far_o from_o he_o who_o say_v lord_n lord_n indeed_o but_o yet_o do_v not_o the_o will_n of_o the_o lord_n neither_o be_v natural_a man_n can_v be_v obedient_a unto_o it_o 8.7_o with_o their_o lip_n they_o confess_v he_o but_o with_o their_o deed_n they_o deny_v he_o and_o therefore_o be_v far_o from_o the_o happiness_n which_o i_o now_o speak_v of_o among_o who_o this_o i_o say_v as_o of_o the_o former_a sort_n that_o though_o some_o of_o they_o do_v simple_o desire_v eternal_a life_n as_o they_o seem_v to_o do_v yet_o they_o prefer_v the_o commodity_n and_o vain_a pleasure_n of_o this_o present_a world_n and_o make_v their_o come_n to_o church_n to_o be_v either_o but_o cover_v for_o their_o profane_a and_o loose_a life_n or_o at_o least_o they_o abide_v in_o they_o still_o and_o yet_o the_o forwardâ—â—_n sort_n of_o they_o both_o who_o mean_v more_o simple_o be_v just_o reprove_v by_o the_o prophet_n word_n here_o in_o complain_v thus_o why_o do_v you_o lay_v out_o your_o money_n and_o not_o for_o bread_n your_o labour_n and_o yet_o not_o to_o be_v satisfy_v for_o even_o these_o follow_v not_o the_o word_n of_o god_n as_o their_o guide_n to_o bring_v they_o to_o that_o which_o they_o seek_v and_o therefore_o be_v never_o like_a to_o attain_v it_o seek_v it_o after_o their_o own_o fancy_n and_o opinion_n and_o not_o thirst_v after_o it_o as_o without_o which_o they_o can_v be_v satisfy_v so_o that_o as_o the_o apostle_n speak_v of_o israel_n so_o i_o may_v speak_v of_o these_o what_o shall_v we_o say_v in_o the_o epistle_n to_o the_o roman_n 9.31.32_o say_v he_o that_o israel_n which_o follow_v the_o law_n of_o righteousness_n yet_o can_v not_o attain_v to_o the_o law_n of_o righteousness_n wherefore_o because_o they_o seek_v it_o not_o by_o faith_n but_o as_o it_o be_v by_o the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n even_o so_o they_o who_o seek_v salvation_n and_o the_o blessedness_n that_o be_v lay_v up_o for_o god_n choose_v even_o that_o be_v enough_o to_o deprive_v they_o of_o it_o in_o that_o they_o seek_v it_o amiss_o that_o be_v to_o say_v not_o as_o the_o word_n of_o god_n direct_v namely_o that_o they_o shall_v thirst_v for_o it_o as_o have_v be_v say_v you_o have_v hear_v the_o reprehension_n exhortation_n the_o exhortation_n follow_v in_o which_o he_o labour_v to_o draw_v they_o from_o their_o own_o wisdom_n which_o deceive_v they_o to_o hearken_v to_o another_o manner_n of_o wisdom_n which_o be_v able_a to_o lead_v they_o to_o that_o which_o he_o call_v they_o to_o enjoy_v that_o be_v the_o true_a happiness_n which_o he_o lay_v out_o under_o these_o speech_n to_o eat_v that_o which_o be_v good_a and_o delight_v their_o soul_n in_o fatness_n and_o here_o it_o be_v worthy_a to_o be_v mark_v that_o when_o he_o have_v tell_v they_o to_o what_o their_o own_o wisdom_n bring_v they_o happiness_n in_o lead_v they_o to_o seek_v salvation_n and_o happiness_n and_o that_o be_v to_o nothing_o but_o to_o deceive_v they_o and_o to_o lose_v their_o labour_n for_o which_o he_o reprove_v they_o now_o he_o will_n they_o to_o hear_v he_o diligent_o who_o teach_v they_o to_o seek_v the_o same_o by_o the_o light_n and_o direction_n of_o god_n word_n whereby_o he_o clear_o show_v that_o there_o be_v no_o other_o way_n to_o find_v that_o which_o they_o seek_v by_o no_o wisdom_n of_o man_n by_o no_o learning_n much_o less_o by_o any_o other_o mean_n of_o blind_a devotion_n and_o fond_a zeal_n without_o knowledge_n and_o yet_o as_o the_o word_n of_o god_n only_o do_v it_o so_o we_o must_v further_o mark_v how_o and_o when_o it_o do_v so_o that_o be_v it_o as_o he_o say_v here_o when_o we_o harken_v diligent_o unto_o it_o as_o declare_v thereby_o that_o we_o be_v willing_a to_o be_v guide_v by_o it_o for_o so_o he_o require_v say_v harken_v diligent_o unto_o i_o in_o that_o which_o i_o shall_v say_v to_o you_o from_o god_n for_o as_o solomon_n faith_n of_o seek_v wisdom_n that_o there_o be_v a_o seek_v of_o it_o slight_o negligent_o and_o slothful_o by_o which_o man_n never_o find_v it_o and_o there_o be_v a_o seek_v of_o it_o 2.3_o as_o silver_n be_v seek_v of_o the_o merchant_n that_o be_v with_o all_o diligence_n and_o by_o all_o good_a opportunity_n not_o rest_v till_o they_o find_v it_o if_o it_o be_v to_o be_v have_v so_o there_o be_v a_o hear_n of_o the_o word_n cold_o without_o profit_n and_o there_o be_v a_o hear_n which_o will_v draw_v and_o persuade_v he_o that_o hear_v never_o to_o give_v over_o till_o he_o have_v find_v and_o buy_v the_o pearl_n which_o be_v hide_v in_o the_o gospel_n because_o he_o know_v that_o it_o be_v there_o to_o be_v have_v this_o hear_v the_o prophet_n require_v and_o he_o that_o hear_v not_o with_o this_o mind_n nor_o to_o this_o end_n he_o lose_v his_o labour_n and_o bestow_v all_o his_o travel_n in_o vain_a quest_n but_o it_o will_v be_v ask_v here_o what_o be_v that_o which_o the_o prophet_n will_v have_v they_o hear_v of_o he_o to_o the_o end_n they_o may_v prosper_v attain_v the_o assurance_n of_o eternal_a life_n and_o the_o happiness_n which_o they_o desire_v for_o he_o do_v not_o express_o mention_v in_o this_o verse_n wherein_o he_o will_v have_v they_o hear_v he_o answ_n for_o answer_v to_o this_o we_o be_v to_o remember_v that_o in_o the_o first_o verse_n he_o speak_v to_o all_o the_o people_n and_o ask_v among_o they_o all_o who_o they_o be_v that_o thirst_v to_o who_o he_o give_v a_o answer_n from_o god_n according_a to_o their_o heart_n desire_v that_o they_o shall_v be_v satisfy_v with_o all_o such_o good_a thing_n as_o they_o thirst_v for_o now_o in_o this_o verse_n we_o hear_v he_o reprove_v all_o the_o rest_n of_o they_o that_o seek_v for_o pardon_n of_o their_o sin_n and_o eternal_a life_n or_o other_o grace_n of_o the_o spirit_n amiss_o even_o by_o their_o own_o wisdom_n and_o fancy_n not_o long_v after_o and_o thirst_v for_o it_o as_o god_n word_n teach_v they_o to_o do_v therefore_o these_o he_o exhort_v to_o hear_v he_o that_o they_o will_v also_o with_o the_o other_o set_v their_o heart_n upon_o it_o and_o thirst_n after_o it_o even_o this_o be_v that_o which_o he_o require_v their_o diligent_a attention_n about_o that_o so_o seek_v it_o as_o their_o brethren_n do_v they_o may_v with_o they_o find_v that_o which_o they_o seek_v even_o as_o they_o have_v do_v and_o this_o if_o they_o do_v they_o shall_v enjoy_v he_o tell_v they_o that_o good_a diet_n yea_o and_o banquet_v cheer_n which_o be_v mean_v by_o the_o allegorical_a speech_n which_o he_o use_v here_o when_o he_o say_v than_o they_o shall_v eat_v that_o which_o be_v good_a and_o their_o soul_n shall_v be_v satisfy_v with_o fatness_n whereby_o he_o mean_v that_o as_o a_o man_n which_o be_v keep_v at_o a_o good_a diet_n with_o wholesome_a good_a &_o savoury_a meat_n be_v healthful_a and_o well_o like_v in_o body_n even_o so_o shall_v his_o soul_n be_v satiate_a and_o fill_v withal_o variety_n of_o heavenly_a dainty_n and_o be_v make_v joyful_a and_o well_o like_v thereby_o which_o with_o a_o appetite_n do_v seek_v the_o same_o and_o so_o all_o they_o find_v it_o who_o be_v ever_o thirst_v after_o one_o good_a thing_n or_o other_o this_o be_v add_v that_o they_o believe_v god_n upon_o his_o word_n and_o doubt_v not_o but_o that_o it_o shall_v be_v so_o which_o i_o add_v to_o quicken_v up_o many_o of_o my_o dear_a brethren_n and_o sister_n hereunto_o who_o i_o deny_v not_o thirst_v fervent_o after_o sundry_a grace_n of_o god_n and_o yet_o for_o all_o this_o comfortable_a promise_n of_o the_o lord_n publish_v here_o by_o
to_o tear_v the_o wound_n that_o we_o ought_v to_o heal_v and_o to_o bind_v up_o but_o this_o do_v the_o wicked_a when_o they_o seek_v to_o vex_v and_o grieve_v the_o faithful_a that_o be_v already_o wound_v and_o cast_v down_o with_o sorrow_n in_o their_o soul_n yea_o and_o for_o that_o they_o carry_v corruption_n still_o about_o they_o i_o say_v not_o he_o be_v the_o happy_a that_o rejoice_v most_o for_o that_o no_o doubt_n many_o time_n he_o may_v do_v which_o be_v but_o in_o a_o very_a woeful_a case_n as_o our_o saviour_n christ_n say_v woe_n be_v to_o you_o that_o laugh_v but_o he_o i_o say_v be_v the_o happy_a man_n that_o have_v the_o great_a cause_n of_o joy_n joy_n for_o this_o be_v the_o argument_n of_o all_o those_o blessedness_n which_o our_o saviour_n christ_n pronounce_v matth._n 5._o the_o poor_a in_o spirit_n be_v pronounce_v bless_v because_o they_o have_v cause_n to_o rejoice_v so_o they_o that_o mourn_v they_o that_o be_v meek_a etc._n etc._n be_v bless_v because_o these_o though_o they_o do_v not_o rejoice_v yet_o they_o have_v every_o one_o of_o they_o just_a cause_n to_o rejoice_v but_o to_o proceed_v have_v the_o faithful_a and_o righteous_a alone_a just_a cause_n of_o joy_n then_o if_o thou_o desire_v sound_o to_o rejoice_v practise_v careful_o and_o constant_o a_o just_a and_o righteous_a life_n for_o without_o this_o faith_n and_o uprightness_n it_o be_v impossible_a though_o thou_o have_v make_v a_o beginning_n therein_o already_o ever_o to_o find_v any_o state_n that_o will_v give_v thou_o cause_n all_o thing_n well_o weigh_v to_o take_v any_o joy_n in_o it_o it_o be_v not_o the_o throne_n of_o a_o prince_n nor_o the_o treasure_n of_o the_o earth_n nor_o the_o pleasure_n of_o the_o world_n that_o can_v afford_v it_o use_v rejoice_v for_o that_o we_o know_v he_o to_o be_v our_o god_n alsufficient_a and_o christ_n jesus_n our_o lord_n also_o to_o rejoice_v for_o the_o lord_n cause_n 17.3_o who_o alone_o give_v &_o other_o sort_n of_o joy_n which_o be_v many_o for_o some_o there_o be_v who_o rejoice_v in_o themselves_o and_o in_o that_o serve_v of_o god_n that_o like_v they_o and_o not_o in_o the_o lord_n as_o first_o many_o natural_a man_n if_o they_o have_v a_o good_a meaning_n and_o live_v quiet_o and_o civil_o among_o man_n they_o think_v they_o can_v choose_v but_o be_v save_v these_o man_n joy_n but_o all_o the_o ground_n of_o their_o joy_n be_v not_o from_o god_n but_o from_o themselves_o from_o their_o own_o blind_a reason_n and_o the_o presumption_n of_o their_o own_o heart_n second_o papist_n and_o such_o as_o follow_v the_o ancient_a pharisy_n these_o man_n not_o only_o do_v many_o civil_a good_a duty_n but_o they_o fast_o they_o pray_v they_o pay_v tithe_n of_o all_o they_o have_v they_o give_v alm_n they_o abstain_v from_o injustice_n extortion_n etc._n etc._n they_o be_v very_o strict_a and_o very_a precise_a in_o many_o thing_n they_o will_v not_o marry_v they_o will_v not_o eat_v such_o and_o such_o meat_n and_o at_o such_o time_n these_o man_n they_o rejoice_v also_o yea_o and_o boast_v themselves_o not_o only_o before_o man_n but_o before_o god_n as_o the_o pharisie_n do_v luk._n 18._o but_o their_o joy_n arise_v from_o themselves_o and_o from_o their_o own_o good_a deed_n and_o meritorious_a action_n as_o they_o hold_v they_o they_o rejoice_v not_o in_o the_o lord_n other_o yet_o there_o be_v who_o rejoice_v in_o the_o thing_n of_o this_o world_n for_o which_o indeed_o it_o may_v be_v lawful_a for_o a_o man_n to_o rejoice_v but_o this_o their_o rejoice_v be_v altogether_o after_o a_o sensual_a and_o a_o carnal_a manner_n they_o rejoice_v in_o riches_n in_o honour_n in_o pleasure_n but_o this_o their_o joy_n it_o neither_o arise_v from_o god_n nor_o end_v in_o he_o but_o either_o it_o proceed_v only_o from_o the_o creature_n and_o rest_v in_o it_o or_o else_o it_o be_v ascribe_v to_o their_o own_o pain_n and_o labour_n or_o for_o that_o they_o have_v attain_v to_o this_o wealth_n or_o that_o place_n by_o their_o own_o industry_n or_o some_o friend_n or_o other_o be_v magnify_v for_o it_o or_o else_o rather_o they_o any_o part_n of_o their_o joy_n shall_v seem_v to_o proceed_v from_o god_n it_o be_v ascribe_v to_o good_a luck_n and_o good_a fortune_n these_o all_o offend_v in_o this_o that_o they_o rejoice_v in_o these_o thing_n but_o not_o in_o the_o lord_n as_o the_o author_n of_o every_o good_a thing_n they_o have_v again_o there_o be_v some_o that_o joy_n in_o lawful_a thing_n but_o their_o joy_n be_v not_o take_v lawful_o they_o never_o weigh_v whether_o they_o use_v they_o in_o such_o a_o manner_n as_o god_n in_o his_o word_n have_v give_v they_o warrant_n for_o or_o not_o they_o delight_v and_o joy_n in_o duty_n of_o their_o call_n to_o look_v unto_o their_o business_n this_o be_v well_o but_o to_o be_v take_v up_o with_o they_o as_o the_o chief_a matter_n and_o on_o the_o lord_n day_n the_o day_n of_o the_o
