6.5_o 6._o quest._n now_o there-hence_a arise_v a_o great_a question_n what_o shall_v be_v the_o difference_n between_o this_o taste_n in_o wicked_a man_n and_o the_o true_a taste_n in_o godly_a man_n answ._n for_o answer_v hereunto_o divers_a difference_n may_v be_v give_v differ_v first_o in_o the_o thing_n taste_v there_o be_v a_o difference_n for_o wicked_a man_n may_v have_v common_a grace_n yea_o and_o miraculous_a gift_n too_o by_o imposition_n of_o hand_n and_o these_o be_v a_o great_a taste_n give_v they_o of_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n kingdom_n but_o they_o never_o taste_v of_o save_a grace_n or_o if_o a_o taste_n of_o save_a grace_n be_v grant_v yet_o they_o taste_v as_o it_o be_v of_o the_o river_n run_v by_o they_o but_o not_o of_o the_o fountain_n whereas_o the_o godly_a have_v the_o very_a spring_n of_o grace_n flow_v in_o they_o second_o in_o the_o time_n of_o taste_v this_o taste_n in_o wicked_a man_n be_v but_o for_o a_o season_n it_o can_v hold_v long_o in_o they_o and_o therefore_o be_v their_o faith_n and_o joy_n say_v to_o be_v temporary_a whereas_o godly_a man_n may_v keep_v their_o taste_n to_o their_o die_a day_n not_o only_o in_o the_o gift_n of_o save_a grace_n but_o in_o the_o very_a sense_n of_o the_o sweetness_n of_o christ_n and_o the_o word_n too_o etc._n etc._n three_o in_o the_o manner_n of_o taste_v for_o wicked_a man_n may_v taste_v of_o the_o gospel_n and_o religion_n by_o sense_n or_o by_o a_o dim_a kind_n of_o contemplation_n or_o by_o a_o sudden_a illumination_n as_o by_o a_o flash_n of_o lightning_n but_o they_o can_v taste_v with_o their_o heart_n clear_o by_o faith_n or_o thus_o wicked_a man_n may_v in_o the_o general_a taste_n that_o be_v know_v and_o believe_v that_o the_o mystery_n of_o christ_n be_v true_a but_o they_o can_v taste_v or_o know_v this_o mystery_n with_o particular_a and_o sound_a application_n as_o they_o four_o in_o the_o ground_n of_o this_o taste_n or_o delight_n for_o a_o wicked_a man_n persuade_v by_o false_a reason_n settle_v in_o the_o common_a hope_n or_o transport_v with_o a_o high_a conceit_n of_o some_o temporary_a and_o common_a gift_n and_o grace_n may_v be_v much_o delight_v and_o joy_v in_o the_o word_n and_o the_o thought_n of_o go_v to_o heaven_n for_o a_o time_n but_o he_o never_o right_o apply_v the_o promise_n of_o grace_n in_o christ_n nor_o do_v he_o ever_o possess_v so_o much_o as_o one_o infallible_a sign_n of_o a_o child_n of_o god_n five_o in_o the_o effect_n and_o consequent_n of_o taste_v for_o 1._o a_o wicked_a man_n may_v taste_v but_o he_o never_o digest_v a_o evil_a conscience_n cast_v up_o the_o food_n again_o or_o choke_v and_o poison_v it_o whereas_o in_o godly_a man_n their_o taste_n abide_v in_o they_o and_o they_o digest_v the_o food_n they_o receive_v the_o virtue_n of_o it_o continue_v with_o they_o 2._o a_o godly_a man_n be_v transform_v and_o make_v another_o man_n by_o this_o taste_n so_o be_v not_o the_o wicked_a man_n it_o be_v not_o a_o savour_n of_o life_n to_o the_o wicked_a 3._o a_o true_a taste_n in_o the_o godly_a work_n as_o be_v before_o note_v a_o high_a estimation_n and_o sound_a contentment_n so_o as_o the_o godly_a place_n the_o felicity_n of_o their_o life_n in_o this_o communion_n with_o god_n and_o his_o word_n but_o that_o can_v never_o a_o wicked_a man_n do_v six_o and_o last_o wicked_a man_n may_v seem_v to_o taste_v and_o yet_o do_v not_o many_o man_n profess_v religion_n and_o delight_n in_o the_o word_n and_o in_o religion_n and_o so_o religious_a duty_n who_o yet_o never_o do_v attain_v to_o it_o but_o constant_o find_v a_o weariness_n secret_a loathe_n and_o many_o time_n a_o secret_a and_o inward_a ill_a savour_n in_o the_o word_n and_o in_o the_o duty_n of_o religion_n so_o as_o the_o taste_n be_v more_o in_o their_o mouth_n when_o they_o talk_v with_o other_o then_o in_o their_o heart_n when_o they_o be_v afore_o god_n it_o will_v not_o be_v amiss_o particular_o to_o clear_v that_o place_n in_o the_o hebrew_n in_o all_o the_o three_o instance_n of_o taste_v first_o they_o be_v say_v to_o taste_v of_o heavenly_a gift_n go_v so_o they_o do_v when_o they_o have_v common_a grace_n as_o sometime_o some_o kind_n of_o faith_n joy_n hatred_n of_o some_o sin_n love_v of_o minister_n or_o some_o godly_a praise_n for_o some_o end_n etc._n etc._n or_o when_o they_o have_v miraculous_a gift_n confirm_v by_o imposition_n of_o hand_n or_o otherwise_o as_o they_o have_v in_o the_o primitive_a time_n and_o these_o gift_n be_v excellent_a and_o heavenly_a because_o they_o be_v mighty_a by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n and_o come_v down_o from_o the_o father_n of_o spirit_n but_o save_v grace_n they_o can_v have_v second_o wicked_a man_n may_v taste_v of_o the_o spirit_n and_o good_a word_n of_o god_n by_o feel_v some_o sudden_a flash_n of_o joy_n either_o out_o of_o admiration_n of_o the_o mean_n of_o deliver_v or_o from_o some_o general_a conceit_n of_o the_o goodness_n of_o god_n praise_n job_n 23.12_o and_o the_o happiness_n of_o the_o godly_a psal._n 119.23_o 24_o 50._o but_o they_o can_v get_v no_o such_o taste_n of_o the_o word_n as_o to_o desire_v it_o as_o their_o appoint_a food_n constant_o psal._n 119.14_o 72._o or_o to_o make_v it_o their_o great_a delight_n in_o affliction_n or_o to_o love_v it_o above_o all_o riches_n 1_o thes._n 1.5_o or_o to_o receive_v it_o with_o much_o assurance_n in_o the_o holy_a ghost_n or_o to_o redress_v their_o way_n by_o it_o ps._n 119._o 9_o 45_o 59_o so_o as_o the_o taste_n of_o the_o word_n shall_v put_v out_o the_o taste_n and_o relish_v of_o sin_n for_o let_v wicked_a man_n be_v affect_v as_o much_o as_o they_o will_v their_o taste_n of_o sin_n will_v remain_v in_o they_o i_o
