which_o receive_v the_o seed_n on_o the_o highway_n some_o hearer_n be_v compare_v to_o such_o ground_n you_o know_v that_o if_o land_n lie_v by_o the_o highway_n side_n or_o a_o highway_n lie_v through_o the_o midst_n of_o a_o plough_v field_n some_o seed_n in_o the_o sow_a will_v fall_v on_o the_o highway_n and_o so_o be_v lose_v thereunto_o be_v some_o hearer_n compare_v and_o that_o very_o fit_o for_o first_o as_o the_o highway_n be_v not_o keep_v several_a and_o private_a but_o lie_v open_a and_o common_a to_o all_o traveller_n and_o passenger_n so_o these_o man_n heart_n be_v not_o enclose_v and_o keep_v several_a for_o heavenly_a thing_n but_o lie_v open_a to_o all_o tentation_n and_o suggestion_n of_o the_o devil_n to_o all_o enticement_n of_o the_o world_n and_o to_o all_o idle_a thought_n &_o vain_a imagination_n and_o that_o in_o the_o time_n of_o hear_v again_o as_o the_o highway_n be_v so_o tread_a and_o trample_v by_o the_o foot_n of_o passenger_n that_o it_o can_v cover_v the_o seed_n or_o if_o it_o shall_v cover_v the_o seed_n yet_o the_o trample_a will_n so_o harden_v the_o soil_n as_o the_o seed_n can_v never_o sprout_v so_o these_o man_n heart_n be_v so_o harden_v by_o wander_a thought_n both_o in_o and_o immediate_o after_o hear_v as_o the_o word_n can_v enter_v or_o at_o least_o can_v take_v any_o root_n in_o their_o heart_n and_o as_o corn_n sow_v in_o the_o highway_n will_v never_o yield_v crop_n like_o other_o ground_n so_o these_o hearer_n will_v never_o yield_v such_o fruit_n of_o the_o word_n as_o 19_o other_o do_v but_o who_o be_v these_o
and_o grow_v for_o a_o while_n but_o not_o long_o if_o heat_n &_o drought_n do_v come_v it_o will_v be_v parch_v and_o wither_v away_o for_o lack_n of_o moisture_n such_o be_v the_o case_n of_o some_o hearer_n their_o heart_n be_v mollify_v in_o part_n somewhat_o soft_a above_o but_o very_o hard_o below_o towards_o the_o bottom_n will_v not_o suffer_v the_o word_n to_o take_v any_o deep_a root_n in_o they_o it_o may_v enter_v into_o their_o heart_n yet_o it_o can_v pierce_v into_o the_o bottom_n of_o they_o it_o may_v be_v some_o root_n yet_o very_a ebb_n and_o shallow_a it_o may_v prosper_v for_o a_o while_n and_o they_o make_v some_o profession_n of_o it_o yet_o not_o long_o and_o in_o regard_n hereof_o they_o become_v unprofitable_a hearer_n so_o as_o from_o hence_o we_o may_v observe_v a_o double_a danger_n and_o inconvenience_n of_o a_o heart_n that_o be_v not_o thorough_o mollify_v to_o the_o bottom_n it_o both_o hinder_v the_o root_n of_o the_o word_n and_o also_o the_o fruitfulness_n of_o it_o 1._o it_o hinder_v the_o root_n of_o the_o word_n so_o as_o it_o can_v possible_o go_v deep_a enough_o the_o word_n shall_v descend_v to_o the_o bottom_n of_o the_o heart_n and_o there_o take_v root_n and_o be_v continual_o nourish_v with_o the_o moisture_n of_o it_o but_o it_o can_v descend_v so_o far_o unless_o it_o be_v thorough_o mollify_v not_o only_o they_o who_o heart_n be_v altogether_o hard_o as_o be_v the_o hart_n of_o pharaoh_n when_o he_o hear_v moses_n and_o aaron_n and_o the_o scribe_n and_o pharisee_n when_o they_o hear_v christ_n but_o also_o they_o who_o heart_n be_v soften_v only_o in_o part_n be_v unprofitable_a hearer_n as_o not_o only_o those_o rock_n which_o be_v bare_a on_o the_o top_n and_o altogether_o hard_a and_o have_v no_o manner_n of_o soil_n and_o moisture_n above_o but_o likewise_o those_o which_o be_v cover_v with_o a_o little_a moisture_n and_o earth_n above_o but_o not_o much_o be_v unfit_a to_o receive_v seed_n the_o one_o will_v not_o receive_v the_o seed_n at_o all_o nor_o suffer_v it_o to_o sprout_v or_o shoot_v forth_o a_o blade_n the_o other_o will_v cause_v it_o to_o sprout_v and_o shoot_v forth_o a_o blade_n but_o never_o to_o bear_v a_o ripe_a ear_n so_o they_o who_o have_v heart_n altogether_o harden_v will_v not_o hear_v or_o at_o least_o not_o receive_v the_o word_n of_o god_n at_o all_o into_o any_o part_n of_o their_o heart_n but_o those_o who_o have_v heart_n partly_o soft_a and_o partly_o hard_a may_v receive_v the_o word_n and_o retain_v it_o for_o a_o time_n but_o will_v never_o bring_v forth_o the_o fruit_n of_o it_o wherefore_o the_o holy_a ghost_n say_v in_o the_o psalm_n and_o it_o be_v apply_v by_o the_o apostle_n to_o the_o hearer_n 7._o of_o the_o gospel_n to_o day_n if_o you_o will_v hear_v his_o voice_n harden_v not_o your_o heart_n because_o the_o hard_a heart_a can_v never_o hear_v the_o word_n of_o god_n so_o reverent_o and_o effectual_o as_o they_o ought_v to_o do_v the_o lord_n bid_v we_o not_o to_o harden_v but_o to_o soften_v our_o heart_n if_o we_o will_v hear_v his_o voice_n the_o hard_a the_o heart_n be_v the_o more_o unprofitable_a shall_v be_v the_o hear_n the_o soft_a the_o heart_n be_v the_o more_o profitable_a shall_v the_o hear_n be_v again_o this_o hardness_n will_v cause_v man_n to_o deny_v the_o word_n in_o time_n of_o tentation_n the_o moisture_n and_o softness_n above_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o receive_v the_o word_n with_o joy_n and_o believe_v for_o a_o time_n but_o the_o hardness_n and_o dryness_n below_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o revolt_a afterward_o when_o god_n hand_n be_v heavy_a on_o pharaoh_n he_o somewhat_o relent_v humble_v himself_o and_o confess_v his_o sin_n but_o as_o soon_o as_o it_o be_v remove_v he_o which_o be_v a_o inordinate_a care_n when_o we_o keep_v no_o measure_n in_o our_o care_n when_o we_o be_v not_o content_a to_o use_v lawful_a but_o also_o use_v unlawful_a mean_n and_o when_o we_o distrustful_a care_n yet_o be_v riches_n as_o prick_a thorn_n to_o choke_v the_o word_n as_o well_o as_o those_o care_n not_o only_o they_o who_o vex_v themselves_o with_o gripe_a care_n how_o to_o get_v and_o how_o to_o exercise_v their_o wealth_n but_o likewise_o those_o who_o think_v they_o have_v enough_o already_o and_o care_v not_o much_o for_o more_o but_o like_o the_o rich_a man_n in_o the_o gospel_n say_v to_o their_o soul_n live_v at_o ease_n eat_v 19_o drink_n and_o take_v your_o pastime_n you_o have_v much_o good_n lay_v up_o for_o many_o year_n may_v be_v unprofitable_a hearer_n although_o this_o evangelist_n name_v riches_n simple_o and_o absolute_o without_o any_o addition_n yet_o be_v he_o to_o be_v expound_v by_o matthew_n and_o mark_v who_o call_v this_o thorn_n
