companion_n and_o the_o pleasure_n of_o this_o earth_n to_o put_v off_o the_o turn_n from_o thy_o sin_n and_o make_v thy_o peace_n with_o god_n till_o it_o be_v too_o late_o oh_o now_o will_v i_o give_v a_o world_n if_o i_o have_v it_o for_o one_o offer_v of_o christ_n more_o for_o one_o sabbath_n more_o to_o make_v my_o peace_n with_o god_n and_o to_o make_v sure_a of_o christ_n but_o alas_o it_o be_v now_o too_o late_o oh_o the_o fear_n and_o distraction_n the_o tear_v of_o the_o hair_n and_o wring_v of_o the_o hand_n the_o gnash_n of_o tooth_n and_o dash_v of_o knee_n the_o weep_a and_o wail_v the_o cry_v and_o roar_v that_o this_o will_v produce_v especial_o when_o thou_o shall_v consider_v how_o god_n every_o sabbath_n call_v upon_o thou_o by_o his_o minister_n to_o turn_v from_o thy_o sin_n unto_o he_o but_o thy_o ear_n and_o thy_o heart_n be_v shut_v against_o he_o and_o how_o jesus_n christ_n be_v offer_v and_o tender_v to_o thou_o only_o upon_o these_o term_n that_o thou_o will_v cast_v away_o thy_o sin_n and_o cast_v thyself_o into_o his_o arm_n and_o yet_o thou_o will_v not_o go_v unto_o he_o but_o refuse_v and_o reject_v he_o and_o his_o grace_n this_o sad_a reflection_n of_o thy_o soul_n upon_o its_o own_o wilful_a folly_n in_o neglect_v and_o outstand_v thy_o day_n will_v be_v the_o everlasting_a worm_n that_o will_v gnaw_v on_o thy_o heart_n world_n without_o end_n oh_o the_o folly_n and_o madness_n of_o all_o wicked_a man_n who_o go_v on_o secure_o and_o impenitent_o in_o their_o sin_n till_o they_o drop_v into_o hellfire_n be_v this_o thy_o wisdom_n to_o sin_n awhile_o and_o burn_v for_o ever_o to_o laugh_v a_o while_n and_o howl_v for_o ever_o for_o a_o little_a momentary_a pleasure_n here_o to_o suffer_v the_o vengeance_n of_o eternal_a fire_n ah_o sinner_n that_o thou_o will_v now_o forethink_v of_o this_o dreadful_a time_n and_o woeful_a misery_n which_o hang_v over_o thy_o head_n that_o when_o thou_o be_v alone_o thou_o will_v serious_o consider_v with_o thyself_o as_o the_o certainty_n and_o dreadfulness_n of_o this_o day_n so_o what_o thy_o condition_n be_v like_a to_o be_v that_o thou_o may_v thereby_o be_v stir_v up_o to_o make_v out_o after_o christ_n by_o who_o thou_o may_v escape_v the_o wrath_n to_o come_v now_o while_o christ_n be_v preach_v to_o thou_o in_o the_o ministry_n of_o the_o gospel_n mercy_n and_o salvation_n be_v offer_v and_o now_o if_o ever_o be_v the_o time_n to_o accept_v it_o oh_o therefore_o that_o now_o even_o now_o in_o this_o thy_o time_n and_o day_n of_o grace_n thou_o will_v know_v the_o thing_n that_o belong_v to_o thy_o peace_n that_o thou_o will_v now_o
though_o your_o sin_n be_v never_o so_o great_a and_o heinous_a yet_o upon_o your_o repentance_n through_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n in_o christ_n they_o shall_v be_v so_o abolish_v as_o if_o they_o have_v never_o be_v commit_v 3._o they_o exclude_v no_o time_n for_o the_o sinner_n come_v unto_o god_n but_o whensoever_o soon_o or_o late_a first_o or_o last_o so_o that_o he_o come_v in_o truth_n great_a than_o mannasseh_n etc._n who_o be_v a_o sorcerer_n a_o idolater_n a_o murderer_n and_o what_o not_o and_o yet_o be_v receive_v to_o mercy_n and_o who_o great_a in_o the_o new_a testament_n than_o paul_n etc._n who_o be_v a_o blasphemer_n and_o a_o persecutor_n of_o the_o saint_n and_o people_n of_o god_n and_o yet_o be_v receive_v to_o mercy_n now_o what_o god_n have_v do_v former_o he_o be_v still_o able_a to_o do_v he_o be_v still_o the_o same_o god_n his_o power_n be_v no_o whit_n lessen_v nor_o diminish_v oh_o sinner_n what_o ground_n have_v thou_o then_o to_o question_v the_o mercy_n of_o god_n to_o thy_o soul_n if_o thou_o do_v in_o truth_n turn_v from_o thy_o sin_n unto_o he_o and_o earnest_o beg_v the_o pardon_n and_o forgiveness_n of_o they_o i_o know_v indeed_o that_o before_o god_n give_v a_o sight_n and_o a_o sense_n of_o our_o sin_n we_o be_v too_o too_o apt_a to_o presume_v but_o our_o understanding_n be_v no_o soon_o enlighten_v to_o see_v our_o sin_n their_o quality_n have_v aggravate_v they_o by_o many_o amplify_a circumstance_n certain_o there_o be_v no_o hope_n of_o mercy_n for_o such_o a_o wretched_a sinful_a creature_n as_o i_o be_o who_o sin_n be_v great_a than_o can_v be_v forgive_v but_o take_v notice_n i_o beseech_v thou_o of_o these_o two_o thing_n 1._o though_o in_o thyself_o there_o be_v nothing_o but_o ground_n and_o matter_n of_o despair_n yet_o in_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n through_o the_o merit_n of_o jesus_n christ_n there_o be_v ground_n enough_o of_o comfort_n and_o encouragement_n 2._o how_o many_o and_o heinous_a soever_o thy_o sin_n have_v be_v yet_o if_o thou_o can_v find_v a_o heart_n to_o turn_v from_o they_o unto_o god_n and_o in_o good_a earnest_n set_v upon_o the_o practice_n of_o a_o holy_a life_n and_o so_o become_v a_o new_a creature_n god_n will_v receive_v thou_o to_o mercy_n but_o still_o beware_v thou_o abuse_v not_o mercy_n by_o make_v it_o thy_o encouragement_n to_o sin_n turn_v not_o this_o cup_n of_o salvation_n into_o a_o cup_n of_o deadly_a poison_n let_v not_o the_o doctrine_n of_o infinite_a mercy_n be_v thy_o damnation_n abuse_v not_o mercy_n as_o thy_o encouragement_n to_o sin_n but_o improve_v mercy_n as_o thy_o encouragement_n to_o repentance_n 2._o for_o the_o willingness_n of_o god_n to_o save_v poor_a sinner_n even_o the_o worst_a of_o they_o it_o do_v appear_v 1._o from_o god_n description_n of_o himself_o exod._n 34.6_o 7._o the_o lord_n god_n merciful_a and_o gracious_a long-suffering_a and_o abundant_a in_o goodness_n and_o truth_n keep_v mercy_n for_o thousand_o forgive_a iniquity_n transgression_n and_o sin_n why_o shall_v the_o lord_n proclaim_v himself_o merciful_a and_o gracious_a to_o forgive_v all_o manner_n of_o sin_n but_o for_o the_o encouragement_n of_o poor_a penitent_a sinner_n to_o come_v unto_o he_o with_o hope_n of_o acceptance_n there_o be_v not_o a_o letter_n in_o this_o name_n of_o god_n not_o a_o word_n in_o this_o description_n of_o he_o but_o full_o and_o adequate_o answer_v all_o the_o objection_n which_o may_v be_v make_v by_o poor_a sinner_n against_o their_o own_o soul_n obj._n 1_o will_v thou_o say_v that_o thy_o condition_n be_v as_o bad_a as_o the_o worst_a have_v be_v as_o great_a and_o heinous_a a_o sinner_n as_o ever_o live_v upon_o the_o face_n of_o the_o earth_n a._n to_o answer_v this_o god_n here_o declare_v himself_o to_o be_v the_o lord_n merciful_a the_o lord_n therefore_o able_a to_o save_v thou_o to_o the_o utmost_a though_o thy_o sin_n be_v never_o so_o many_o and_o heinous_a yet_o he_o be_v able_a to_o save_v thou_o from_o they_o all_o and_o he_o be_v merciful_a therefore_o willing_a to_o save_v thou_o for_o in_o he_o there_o be_v bowel_n of_o mercy_n pity_n and_o compassion_n and_o he_o delight_v in_o mercy_n obj._n 2._o will_v thou_o say_v thou_o be_v in_o thyself_o most_o unworthy_a to_o partake_v of_o any_o mercy_n from_o god_n have_v nothing_o in_o thou_o to_o commend_v thou_o to_o he_o or_o to_o move_v he_o to_o extend_v his_o mercy_n unto_o thou_o a._n to_o this_o the_o lord_n answer_v in_o the_o next_o place_n that_o he_o be_v gracious_a and_o therefore_o what_o he_o do_v he_o will_v do_v free_o without_o any_o respect_n of_o work_n or_o worthiness_n in_o we_o for_o grace_n be_v to_o show_v mercy_n free_o the_o mercy_n god_n ever_o show_v to_o any_o of_o his_o people_n be_v original_o found_v in_o himself_o alone_o in_o his_o own_o goodness_n and_o lovingkindness_n the_o apostle_n therefore_o call_v it_o 1.11_o the_o good_a pleasure_n of_o his_o goodness_n whereupon_o say_v the_o lord_n himself_o 33.19_o i_o will_v be_v gracious_a to_o who_o i_o will_v be_v gracious_a and_o will_v show_v mercy_n on_o who_o i_o will_v show_v mercy_n obj._n 3_o will_v thou_o further_o object_n and_o say_v thou_o have_v misspend_v the_o flower_n of_o thy_o youth_n and_o the_o strength_n of_o thy_o age_n in_o vanity_n and_o pleasure_n thy_o whole_a life_n have_v be_v a_o continue_a course_n of_o sin_v against_o god_n so_o that_o thou_o have_v cause_n to_o fear_v that_o god_n have_v give_v over_o look_v after_o thou_o and_o that_o his_o patience_n towards_o thou_o be_v expire_v and_o thy_o day_n of_o grace_n past_a a._n to_o this_o the_o lord_n answer_v in_o the_o follow_a word_n that_o he_o be_v long-suffering_a not_o only_o merciful_a and_o gracious_a but_o likewise_o long-suffering_a to_o thee-ward_n 3.9_o not_o willing_a that_o thou_o shall_v perish_v but_o that_o thou_o even_o thou_o shall_v come_v to_o repentance_n he_o still_o wait_v for_o thy_o repentance_n and_o reformation_n 30.18_o that_o he_o may_v be_v gracious_a unto_o thou_o obj._n 4._o will_v thou_o say_v that_o though_o the_o lord_n have_v show_v himself_o merciful_a gracious_a and_o long-suffering_a unto_o other_o yet_o thou_o be_v so_o destitute_a of_o all_o grace_n and_o goodness_n that_o thou_o have_v little_a hope_n of_o partake_v have_v read_v a_o story_n of_o a_o gentlewoman_n who_o be_v condemn_v to_o die_v for_o kill_v she_o own_o child_n whereupon_o divers_a minister_n come_v to_o visit_v she_o and_o perceive_v her_o little_a affect_a with_o her_o sin_n and_o sad_a condition_n they_o labour_v to_o set_v before_o her_o the_o heinousness_n of_o her_o sin_n and_o the_o dreadfulness_n of_o her_o condition_n without_o hearty_a and_o deep_a repentance_n all_o which_o little_o move_v she_o seem_v rather_o the_o more_o harden_v in_o her_o sin_n but_o at_o last_o another_o reverend_n divine_a hear_n of_o her_o obdurate_a hardness_n notwithstanding_o all_o that_o be_v say_v unto_o she_o go_v and_o preach_v to_o her_o the_o abundant_a riches_n of_o god_n mercy_n in_o christ_n how_o ready_a he_o be_v to_o embrace_v with_o the_o arm_n of_o his_o freegrace_n every_o penitent_a sinner_n and_o how_o willing_a christ_n be_v to_o receive_v all_o poor_a sinner_n who_o will_v go_v unto_o he_o and_o cast_v themselves_o into_o his_o arm_n how_o many_o and_o heinous_a soever_o their_o sin_n be_v and_o thereupon_o tell_v she_o there_o be_v hope_n of_o mercy_n for_o she_o if_o she_o be_v hearty_o sorry_a believe_a sinner_n declare_v unto_o she_o how_o god_n delight_v in_o mercy_n and_o that_o where_o sin_n have_v abound_v there_o his_o grace_n and_o mercy_n will_v much_o more_o abound_v or_o to_o that_o purpose_n and_o thereupon_o she_o present_o fall_v a_o weep_a wring_v her_o hand_n and_o cry_v for_o mercy_n and_o die_v very_o comfortable_o as_o it_o be_v relate_v have_v have_v the_o mercy_n sin_n past_a and_o stir_v thou_o up_o to_o turn_v from_o they_o unto_o god_n by_o hearty_a repentance_n and_o to_o close_v with_o jesus_n christ_n upon_o the_o term_n of_o the_o gospel_n oh_o that_o i_o can_v prevail_v with_o thou_o as_o to_o give_v a_o bill_n of_o divorce_n to_o thy_o lust_n and_o corruption_n so_o to_o give_v up_o thyself_o unto_o christ_n and_o to_o adventure_v thy_o soul_n upon_o he_o rest_v upon_o his_o perfect_a righteousness_n and_o all-sufficient_a sacrifice_n for_o the_o pardon_n of_o thy_o sin_n here_o and_o for_o eternal_a life_n and_o salvation_n hereafter_o if_o christ_n be_v so_o willing_a to_o receive_v thou_o why_o shall_v not_o thou_o be_v willing_a to_o go_v unto_o he_o and_o that_o with_o confidence_n of_o acceptance_n salvation_n be_v this_o day_n 28.9_o and_o that_o this_o be_v the_o practice_n of_o the_o saint_n in_o the_o time_n of_o the_o gospel_n appear_v from_o the_o expression_n of_o the_o apostle_n 6.1_o you_o have_v need_v that_o one_o do_v frequent_o on_o some_o day_n or_o day_n every_o week_n 2._o that_o it_o be_v do_v by_o little_a at_o once_o for_o to_o be_v too_o long_o or_o tedious_a therein_o be_v apt_a to_o dull_v the_o understanding_n and_o to_o cause_n wearisomeness_n in_o the_o learner_n for_o the_o better_a press_v this_o duty_n i_o shall_v add_v a_o few_o motive_n or_o argument_n 2._o i._o the_o first_o argument_n or_o motive_n may_v be_v take_v from_o the_o benefit_n which_o will_v follow_v thereupon_o 1._o timely_o instruction_n will_v season_v their_o heart_n that_o they_o be_v like_a to_o be_v better_o for_o it_o all_o the_o day_n of_o their_o life_n and_o therefore_o say_v the_o wise_a man_n traiâ—_n up_o or_o as_o the_o word_n signify_v catechise_v a_o child_n in_o the_o way_n he_o shall_v go_v and_o when_o he_o be_v old_a he_o will_v not_o depart_v from_o it_o but_o as_o a_o vessel_n will_v retain_v long_o the_o savour_n of_o that_o liquor_n it_o be_v season_v first_o withal_o so_o will_v man_n the_o instruction_n they_o have_v learn_v in_o their_o youth_n 2._o it_o be_v a_o excellent_a mean_n to_o keep_v they_o from_o the_o error_n and_o heresy_n of_o the_o time_n for_o child_n well_o catechise_v and_o instruct_v in_o the_o principle_n of_o religion_n be_v in_o great_a measure_n antidote_v against_o the_o danger_n of_o seduce_a doctrine_n 16.6_o the_o apostle_n say_v there_o must_v be_v heresy_n which_o be_v of_o a_o spread_a nature_n and_o therefore_o by_o our_o saviour_n compare_v to_o leaven_n what_o better_a preservative_n against_o the_o infection_n of_o false_a doctrine_n error_n and_o heresy_n than_o to_o be_v well_o catechise_v observe_v who_o they_o be_v that_o be_v easy_a seduce_v by_o false_a teacher_n who_o they_o be_v that_o have_v embrace_v their_o erroneous_a tenet_n and_o you_o shall_v find_v that_o they_o be_v such_o who_o be_v never_o well_o catechise_v nor_o ground_v in_o the_o principle_n of_o religion_n as_o therefore_o you_o will_v not_o have_v your_o child_n and_o servant_n poison_v with_o the_o erroneous_a doctrine_n of_o false_a teacher_n do_v your_o endeavour_n to_o get_v they_o well_o root_v and_o ground_v in_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o truth_n 3._o it_o be_v a_o excellent_a mean_n to_o make_v they_o hear_v the_o public_a ministry_n of_o the_o word_n with_o more_o profit_n for_o thereby_o they_o will_v be_v enable_v to_o examine_v the_o doctrine_n which_o they_o hear_v by_o the_o analogy_n of_o faith_n it_o be_v foretell_v that_o in_o the_o latter_a day_n there_o shall_v be_v false_a teacher_n 2.1_o who_o shall_v privy_o bring_v in_o damnable_a heresy_n and_o therefore_o we_o be_v not_o to_o receive_v all_o for_o truth_n which_o be_v deliver_v in_o the_o pulpit_n but_o as_o the_o apostle_n exhort_v we_o 5.21_o to_o prove_v and_o try_v all_o thing_n and_o to_o hold_v fast_o only_o that_o which_o be_v good_a which_o we_o shall_v never_o be_v able_a to_o do_v unless_o we_o be_v first_o well_o catechise_v and_o instruct_v in_o the_o principle_n of_o religion_n as_o also_o well_o acquaint_v with_o the_o scripture_n if_o therefore_o you_o who_o be_v parent_n and_o master_n of_o family_n will_v discharge_v your_o duty_n herein_o how_o will_v error_n vanish_v religion_n flourish_n and_o how_o will_v knowledge_n and_o grace_n abound_v in_o your_o child_n and_o servant_n ii_o another_o argument_n may_v be_v take_v from_o the_o manifold_a damage_n which_o usual_o follow_v a_o neglect_n of_o family_n catechise_v 1._o it_o be_v the_o ground_n of_o that_o ignorance_n and_o spiritual_a blindness_n which_o overflow_v this_o nation_n for_o as_o darkness_n proceed_v from_o the_o want_n of_o light_n so_o ignorance_n must_v needs_o proceed_v from_o the_o want_n of_o teach_v 2._o it_o be_v the_o ground_n of_o that_o looseness_n and_o profaneness_n that_o be_v in_o many_o family_n for_o where_o god_n service_n have_v no_o place_n there_o sin_n will_v
