be_v here_o speak_v be_v intend_v in_o a_o double_a sense_n first_o absolute_o to_o the_o death_n of_o christ_n itself_o second_o respective_o to_o the_o sacrament_n of_o the_o lord_n supper_n so_o the_o person_n that_o be_v here_o speak_v of_o be_v to_o be_v consider_v answerable_o in_o both_o these_o sense_n first_o as_o they_o have_v their_o interest_n and_o part_n in_o the_o death_n of_o christ_n and_o second_o as_o they_o have_v their_o part_n and_o interest_n in_o the_o sacrament_n of_o the_o lord_n supper_n we_o have_v speak_v of_o the_o person_n in_o the_o first_o sense_n heretofore_o as_o they_o have_v their_o interest_n in_o the_o death_n of_o christ_n we_o be_v now_o to_o speak_v of_o they_o as_o they_o have_v interest_n in_o the_o lord_n supper_n and_o for_o to_o furnish_v this_o text_n so_o far_o forth_o as_o it_o make_v for_o our_o present_a purpose_n the_o person_n here_o speak_v of_o as_o you_o see_v be_v set_v forth_o in_o general_a term_n many_o but_o this_o sacrament_n shall_v be_v thus_o in_o use_n and_o thus_o administer_v it_o must_v be_v do_v in_o a_o assembly_n many_o must_v be_v present_a at_o it_o and_o that_o be_v the_o other_o part_n of_o whole_a body_n of_o the_o text_n stand_v thus_o these_o corinthian_n to_o who_o the_o apostle_n write_v this_o epistle_n be_v new_o convert_v to_o the_o faith_n of_o christ_n by_o paul_n ministry_n and_o they_o make_v profession_n of_o this_o their_o faith_n by_o the_o use_n of_o god_n save_v ordinance_n particular_o by_o the_o use_n of_o the_o sacrament_n of_o the_o lord_n supper_n satan_n according_a to_o his_o wont_a malice_n when_o he_o see_v he_o can_v not_o utter_o deprive_v they_o nor_o keep_v they_o from_o the_o use_n of_o this_o notable_a mean_n of_o grace_n he_o labour_v cunning_o to_o infect_v and_o stain_v it_o with_o sundry_a corruption_n thereby_o to_o defile_v they_o in_o the_o use_n of_o this_o sacrament_n and_o so_o to_o make_v it_o unprofitable_a to_o they_o and_o sure_o in_o a_o short_a time_n he_o prevail_v great_o on_o their_o weakness_n herein_o and_o bring_v in_o much_o disorder_n and_o abuse_v among_o they_o yea_o such_o gross_a abuse_n that_o they_o poison_v their_o holy_a assembly_n verse_n 17._o they_o come_v together_o not_o for_o profit_n but_o for_o hurt_v whereas_o this_o sacrament_n be_v ordain_v for_o their_o profit_n and_o good_a by_o this_o mean_v it_o turn_v to_o their_o hurt_n such_o gross_a abuse_n they_o be_v as_o bring_v down_o god_n sensible_a judgement_n upon_o they_o verse_n 30._o for_o this_o cause_n many_o be_v weak_a and_o sick_a among_o you_o and_o many_o sleep_n such_o as_o in_o a_o manner_n nullify_v the_o sacrament_n to_o they_o vers_n 20._o this_o be_v not_o to_o eat_v the_o lord_n supper_n you_o do_v so_o corrupt_v and_o stain_v it_o that_o in_o effect_v you_o do_v not_o eat_v it_o one_o special_a corruption_n among_o they_o be_v this_o verse_n 21._o that_o they_o tarry_v not_o one_o for_o another_o that_o so_o they_o may_v communicate_v together_o but_o do_v prevent_v one_o another_o they_o come_v to_o the_o lord_n table_n as_o to_o a_o scamble_a feast_n first_o come_v first_o serve_v a_o horrible_a abuse_n in_o the_o holy_a and_o religious_a feast_n of_o the_o lord_n supper_n the_o apostle_n so_o soon_o as_o he_o hear_v of_o these_o abuse_n in_o zeal_n for_o god_n glory_n in_o conscience_n of_o his_o own_o duty_n and_o in_o a_o holy_a jealousy_n for_o the_o pure_a use_n of_o the_o lord_n ordinance_n and_o in_o a_o fatherly_a care_n which_o he_o have_v over_o these_o corinthian_n who_o he_o have_v late_o beget_v to_o the_o faith_n present_o take_v a_o course_n to_o reform_v and_o redress_v these_o abuse_n and_o as_o the_o nature_n of_o all_o right_a and_o true_a reformation_n do_v require_v that_o when_o thing_n be_v out_o of_o square_a they_o be_v to_o be_v refine_v and_o renew_v according_a to_o the_o first_o original_a so_o the_o apostle_n be_v to_o redress_v the_o abuse_n of_o the_o lord_n supper_n among_o they_o he_o bring_v they_o back_o to_o the_o first_o institution_n to_o the_o first_o lord_n supper_n that_o ever_o be_v and_o by_o that_o pattern_n frame_v his_o reformation_n and_o there_o he_o rehearse_v the_o institution_n verse_n 23._o this_o bread_n be_v my_o body_n etc._n etc._n and_o this_o cup_n be_v my_o blood_n etc._n etc._n there_o be_v the_o repetition_n of_o the_o institution_n the_o application_n for_o reformation_n be_v in_o the_o 26._o verse_n for_o as_o often_o as_o you_o eat_v of_o this_o bread_n and_o drink_v of_o this_o cup_n you_o show_v forth_o the_o lord_n death_n till_o he_o come_v the_o sum_n of_o all_o so_o far_o as_o it_o concern_v our_o present_a purpose_n be_v brief_o this_o as_o if_o the_o apostle_n shall_v have_v say_v to_o these_o corinthian_n o_o you_o corinthian_n you_o be_v much_o to_o blame_v that_o you_o suffer_v yourselves_o to_o be_v so_o stain_v with_o so_o many_o corruption_n in_o the_o lord_n supper_n by_o name_n this_o be_v one_o that_o you_o tarry_v not_o one_o for_o another_o to_o communicate_v together_o but_o one_o prevent_v another_o the_o rich_a eat_v before_o the_o poor_a come_v as_o if_o we_o have_v more_o care_n of_o our_o belly_n than_o of_o god_n religion_n and_o christ_n suffering_n this_o be_v a_o gross_a abuse_n it_o be_v not_o so_o in_o the_o beginning_n in_o the_o first_o supper_n that_o christ_n institute_v than_o all_o the_o disciple_n be_v present_a and_o do_v love_o communicate_v together_o and_o therefore_o if_o ever_o you_o look_v to_o celebrate_v the_o lord_n supper_n with_o comfort_n and_o benefit_n to_o your_o own_o soul_n you_o must_v do_v as_o they_o do_v reform_v this_o error_n and_o tarry_v one_o for_o another_o in_o the_o word_n yet_o for_o plainness_n sake_n we_o will_v go_v over_o they_o with_o some_o familiar_a and_o easy_a exposition_n whereby_o also_o we_o shall_v make_v way_n to_o our_o observation_n these_o word_n in_o the_o 26_o verse_n be_v paul_n own_o word_n and_o not_o christ_n the_o word_n before_o verse_n 26._o and_o 25._o be_v christ_n own_o word_n but_o these_o be_v paul_n in_o the_o former_a verse_n it_o be_v say_v do_v this_o in_o remembrance_n of_o i_o as_o christ_n himself_o speak_v it_o but_o here_o it_o be_v say_v you_o show_v the_o lord_n death_n as_o paul_n speak_v this_o to_o apply_v it_o to_o they_o and_o consequent_o to_o all_o the_o faithful_a as_o be_v so_o mean_v by_o our_o saviour_n himself_o and_o not_o to_o his_o disciple_n only_o and_o so_o he_o perform_v the_o office_n of_o a_o faithful_a minister_n of_o jesus_n christ_n which_o be_v to_o confirm_v his_o word_n as_o a_o witness_n to_o expound_v they_o as_o a_o interpreter_n and_o to_o apply_v it_o to_o they_o as_o a_o messenger_n send_v to_o they_o for_o that_o purpose_n it_o be_v say_v here_o in_o the_o first_o place_n as_o often_o as_o you_o eat_v which_o contain_v a_o intimation_n that_o they_o do_v often_o communicate_v and_o withal_o a_o admonition_n that_o it_o be_v a_o necessary_a duty_n to_o communicate_v often_o it_o be_v speak_v of_o here_o as_o a_o matter_n commendable_a in_o they_o and_o therefore_o imitable_a in_o we_o for_o he_o will_v never_o have_v enjoin_v a_o second_o duty_n upon_o it_o but_o that_o he_o do_v approve_v the_o first_o they_o must_v not_o think_v it_o enough_o that_o they_o have_v do_v it_o once_o and_o that_o shall_v

serve_v for_o all_o nor_o to_o say_v they_o will_v do_v it_o hereafter_o though_o they_o omit_v it_o now_o but_o as_o often_o as_o they_o do_v the_o one_o they_o must_v do_v the_o other_o as_o often_o other_o time_n as_o that_o sacrament_n be_v institute_v and_o sanctify_v special_o for_o that_o purpose_n next_o it_o be_v say_v so_o oft_o as_o you_o shall_v eat_v etc._n etc._n you_o shall_v show_v where_o you_o see_v the_o holy_a ghost_n press_v it_o upon_o every_o one_o for_o his_o own_o particular_a show_v thereby_o that_o it_o be_v not_o enough_o that_o the_o minister_n show_v forth_o the_o lord_n death_n for_o all_o they_o that_o be_v there_o present_a but_o every_o one_o be_v to_o show_v it_o forth_o for_o himself_o further_n it_o be_v say_v shall_v eat_v this_o bread_n etc._n etc._n you_o see_v here_o he_o speak_v of_o the_o sacrament_n and_o he_o describe_v it_o by_o the_o use_n or_o the_o actual_a participation_n of_o it_o thereby_o show_v that_o the_o benefit_n of_o this_o sacrament_n do_v not_o consist_v in_o the_o see_n or_o the_o have_v of_o it_o but_o in_o the_o use_n and_o communicate_v in_o it_o and_o note_v here_o further_o that_o the_o apostle_n call_v it_o bread_n even_o after_o the_o word_n of_o consecration_n it_o be_v bread_n still_o and_o yet_o it_o be_v the_o body_n of_o christ_n in_o regard_n of_o the_o use_n it_o be_v alter_v and_o be_v the_o body_n of_o christ_n but_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o creature_n it_o be_v bread_n still_o consider_v yet_o further_o that_o he_o name_v not_o only_o the_o eat_n of_o the_o bread_n but_o the_o drink_n of_o the_o cup_n together_o with_o it_o he_o say_v not_o or_o drink_v this_o cup_n but_z and_o drink_v this_o cup_n whereby_o we_o may_v see_v that_o they_o who_o separate_v the_o cup_n from_o the_o bread_n in_o the_o use_n of_o this_o sacrament_n as_o the_o papist_n do_v they_o do_v wicked_o put_v asunder_o that_o which_o god_n have_v join_v together_o and_o this_o be_v lord_n death_n which_o we_o must_v not_o understand_v as_o if_o it_o be_v mean_v bare_o of_o his_o die_a or_o of_o his_o crucify_a but_o his_o death_n together_o with_o the_o benefit_n and_o fruit_n and_o for_o our_o good_a so_o long_o as_o we_o need_v they_o we_o shall_v have_v they_o but_o the_o thing_n that_o be_v the_o sacrament_n god_n save_v ordinance_n shall_v utter_o cease_v to_o be_v when_o we_o shall_v have_v no_o further_o use_v of_o they_o so_o much_o for_o the_o meaning_n the_o three_o point_n be_v the_o part_n of_o the_o text_n first_o a_o action_n to_o be_v perform_v in_o to_o stand_v by_o and_o look_v on_o and_o for_o other_o to_o do_v it_o but_o we_o must_v do_v it_o for_o ourselves_o it_o be_v true_a indeed_o that_o god_n have_v promise_v a_o blessing_n to_o his_o own_o ordinance_n but_o yet_o with_o this_o condition_n that_o we_o use_v they_o in_o their_o own_o kind_n and_o so_o as_o he_o have_v appoint_v and_o ordain_v they_o but_o if_o we_o apply_v they_o not_o or_o use_v they_o otherwise_o than_o god_n have_v appoint_v he_o be_v free_v of_o his_o promise_n neither_o can_v we_o expect_v any_o blessing_n from_o god_n use_v 3_o the_o three_o use_n it_o minister_v unto_o we_o matter_n of_o exhortation_n it_o teach_v we_o see_v it_o be_v so_o that_o the_o sacrament_n be_v only_o beneficial_a in_o the_o use_n of_o it_o therefore_o let_v we_o labour_n to_o frame_v ourselves_o to_o a_o frequent_a use_n of_o the_o sacrament_n of_o the_o lord_n supper_n there_o be_v no_o benefit_n without_o the_o use_n of_o it_o by_o the_o use_n of_o it_o there_o be_v much_o benefit_n and_o singular_a profit_n and_o comfort_n as_o the_o assurance_n of_o god_n love_n and_o favour_n assurance_n of_o the_o forgiveness_n of_o our_o sin_n and_o reconciliation_n with_o god_n and_o grace_n from_o god_n to_o preserve_v we_o from_o sin_n that_o we_o fall_v not_o final_o and_o many_o such_o like_a help_n there_o be_v therefore_o see_v without_o the_o use_n of_o it_o there_o be_v no_o benefit_n and_o by_o the_o use_n of_o it_o much_o benefit_n let_v we_o stir_v up_o ourselves_o to_o use_v it_o frequent_o and_o when_o thou_o come_v to_o it_o see_v thou_o bring_v man_n to_o be_v employ_v in_o this_o work_n and_o so_o shall_v thou_o then_o communicate_v in_o the_o whole_a benefit_n of_o the_o sacrament_n always_o provide_v that_o still_o we_o stir_v up_o ourselves_o to_o matter_n of_o action_n in_o the_o use_n of_o the_o sacrament_n that_o we_o stir_v up_o our_o mind_n and_o scules_a to_o a_o actual_a believe_a a_o actual_a discern_a and_o a_o actual_a receive_n of_o christ_n and_o his_o merit_n and_o a_o actual_a apply_v they_o to_o our_o poor_a soul_n then_o shall_v we_o be_v sure_a to_o have_v the_o benefit_n of_o the_o sacrament_n still_o know_v the_o benefit_n and_o nature_n of_o the_o sacrament_n consist_v in_o the_o use_n of_o the_o sacrament_n and_o therefore_o the_o more_o we_o stir_v up_o ourselves_o to_o those_o action_n that_o accompany_v it_o the_o more_o benefit_n we_o shall_v receive_v by_o it_o and_o this_o be_v that_o that_o make_v many_o that_o come_v here_o to_o the_o lord_n table_n and_o that_o be_v make_v partaker_n happy_o of_o the_o nature_n of_o it_o yet_o notwithstanding_o they_o fail_v of_o the_o benefit_n of_o the_o sacrament_n what_o be_v the_o reason_n sure_o the_o fault_n be_v their_o own_o namely_o that_o the_o apostle_n describe_v the_o nature_n of_o the_o sacrament_n of_o the_o lord_n supper_n he_o describe_v it_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o use_n and_o benefit_n of_o it_o the_o second_o point_n that_o we_o be_v to_o consider_v be_v this_o namely_o that_o whereas_o the_o apostle_n here_o in_o this_o speech_n make_v mention_n of_o the_o outward_a element_n in_o the_o sacrament_n of_o the_o lord_n supper_n the_o bread_n and_o the_o wine_n he_o call_v they_o by_o their_o own_o proper_a name_n eat_v this_o bread_n and_o drink_v this_o cup_n that_o be_v this_o wine_n he_o call_v they_o i_o say_v by_o their_o own_o proper_a name_n that_o be_v by_o the_o name_n of_o the_o sign_n not_o by_o the_o name_n of_o the_o thing_n signify_v he_o do_v not_o say_v as_o often_o as_o you_o shall_v eat_v this_o body_n and_o drink_v this_o blood_n but_o as_o often_o as_o you_o eat_v this_o bread_n and_o drink_v this_o cup_n and_o this_o he_o do_v after_o the_o blessing_n and_o consecration_n to_o this_o sacred_a use_n and_o that_o appear_v by_o the_o circumstance_n of_o the_o text_n for_o look_v what_o bread_n our_o saviour_n speak_v of_o in_o the_o former_a word_n that_o the_o apostle_n speak_v of_o here_o see_v he_o infer_v it_o by_o way_n of_o reason_n now_o that_o which_o christ_n speak_v of_o in_o the_o verse_n go_v before_o be_v bread_n after_o it_o be_v bless_v and_o consecrate_v bread_n in_o the_o use_n of_o the_o sacrament_n and_o so_o the_o apostle_n call_v it_o bread_n still_o and_o so_o likewise_o it_o appear_v plain_o by_o the_o whole_a drift_n of_o this_o part_n of_o the_o chapter_n where_o the_o apostle_n speak_v of_o the_o bread_n in_o the_o use_n of_o the_o sacrament_n namely_o after_o consecration_n doctr._fw-la 2_o the_o point_n of_o again_o we_o note_v in_o the_o second_o place_n that_o whereas_o the_o apostle_n here_o speak_v of_o the_o element_n of_o bread_n and_o wine_n as_o they_o be_v in_o use_n in_o the_o sacrament_n he_o call_v they_o by_o their_o ordinary_a name_n the_o bread_n by_o the_o name_n of_o bread_n and_o the_o wine_n by_o the_o name_n of_o cup_n from_o hence_o we_o gather_v this_o doctrine_n that_o even_o after_o the_o word_n of_o consecration_n and_o blessing_n still_o the_o bread_n and_o the_o wine_n for_o their_o nature_n and_o substance_n be_v the_o same_o as_o they_o be_v before_o still_o they_o remain_v bread_n and_o wine_n so_o far_o we_o proceed_v now_o we_o be_v to_o proceed_v further_o three_o than_o we_o be_v here_o to_o consider_v that_o the_o apostle_n here_o speak_v of_o these_o element_n of_o bread_n and_o wine_n as_o they_o be_v in_o use_n in_o the_o sacrament_n of_o the_o lord_n supper_n he_o set_v they_o forth_o by_o a_o note_n of_o excellency_n this_o bread_n and_o this_o cup_n for_o by_o the_o cup_n be_v mean_v wine_n as_o oft_o as_o you_o eat_v this_o bread_n and_o drink_v this_o cup_n he_o set_v they_o forth_o by_o a_o note_n of_o excellency_n as_o in_o all_o thing_n we_o must_v keep_v a_o mean_a without_o go_v too_o far_o or_o come_v too_o short_a so_o special_o in_o matter_n of_o religion_n we_o must_v be_v sure_a to_o keep_v on_o the_o right_a way_n without_o turn_v either_o to_o the_o right_a hand_n or_o to_o the_o left_a we_o must_v take_v all_o matter_n of_o religion_n in_o that_o very_a precise_a and_o true_a strain_n that_o the_o lord_n himself_o have_v set_v upon_o they_o we_o be_v apt_a enough_o to_o err_v as_o well_o on_o the_o one_o side_n as_o on_o the_o other_o as_o well_o on_o the_o right_a side_n as_o on_o the_o left_a and_o to_o err_v on_o either_o side_n be_v alike_o dangerous_a so_o it_o be_v in_o other_o matter_n of_o religion_n and_o so_o it_o be_v in_o our_o estimation_n of_o these_o element_n of_o bread_n and_o wine_n that_o be_v in_o use_n in_o the_o lord_n supper_n some_o do_v err_v on_o the_o right_a hand_n in_o their_o estimation_n of_o they_o think_v too_o high_o of_o they_o as_o the_o papist_n do_v that_o the_o bread_n be_v corporal_o the_o very_a body_n of_o christ_n that_o the_o wine_n be_v corporal_o the_o very_a blood_n of_o christ_n on_o the_o other_o side_n other_o there_o be_v that_o err_v on_o the_o left_a hand_n in_o their_o estimation_n of_o they_o they_o esteem_v too_o mean_o and_o base_o of_o they_o as_o the_o profane_a people_n of_o the_o world_n they_o general_o esteem_v the_o bread_n and_o wine_n at_o the_o lord_n table_n no_o better_a than_o the_o bread_n and_o wine_n at_o their_o own_o table_n to_o meet_v with_o both_o these_o error_n and_o so_o to_o keep_v our_o heart_n upright_o in_o the_o profession_n of_o god_n truth_n herein_o the_o apostle_n in_o this_o short_a speech_n give_v we_o a_o good_a caveat_n and_o preservative_n and_o first_o that_o we_o may_v not_o think_v too_o high_o of_o they_o and_o so_o err_v on_o the_o right_a hand_n as_o the_o papist_n do_v the_o apostle_n still_o call_v they_o bread_n and_o wine_n show_v that_o in_o the_o nature_n and_o substance_n of_o they_o they_o be_v the_o same_o as_o they_o be_v before_o next_o that_o we_o may_v not_o err_v on_o the_o left_a hand_n and_o think_v too_o mean_o and_o base_o of_o they_o as_o from_o ordinary_a bread_n &_o wine_n because_o they_o be_v dedicate_v to_o a_o sacred_a and_o holy_a use_n whereby_o they_o be_v advance_v above_o all_o other_o bread_n and_o wine_n whatsoever_o as_o that_o be_v use_v in_o the_o lord_n supper_n be_v in_o nature_n and_o substance_n the_o same_o creature_n as_o they_o be_v before_o yet_o notwithstanding_o in_o respect_n of_o that_o sacred_a and_o holy_a use_n that_o they_o be_v consecrate_v and_o dedicate_v unto_o to_o be_v make_v part_n of_o the_o sacrament_n in_o this_o respect_n they_o be_v far_o more_o excellent_a than_o any_o other_o so_o oft_o as_o you_o eat_v this_o bread_n and_o drink_v this_o cup_n you_o show_v the_o lord_n death_n till_o he_o come_v the_o precept_n be_v they_o must_v show_v the_o lord_n death_n and_o that_o precept_n be_v build_v upon_o this_o their_o practice_n their_o oft_o receive_v of_o the_o sacrament_n and_o this_o be_v a_o general_a rule_n that_o god_n never_o build_v any_o precept_n but_o upon_o a_o good_a ground_n &_o foundation_n the_o foundation_n must_v be_v his_o own_o as_o well_o as_o the_o building_n else_o he_o never_o build_v upon_o it_o but_o the_o lord_n build_v a_o precept_n upon_o this_o practice_n and_o therefore_o their_o practice_n be_v good_a and_o indeed_o a_o matter_n that_o god_n approve_v of_o so_o that_o you_o see_v that_o the_o text_n make_v it_o clear_a that_o it_o be_v a_o commendable_a thing_n and_o if_o we_o shall_v go_v further_a to_o speak_v of_o the_o last_o clause_n of_o the_o verse_n do_v it_o till_o he_o come_v that_o also_o show_v that_o it_o be_v a_o matter_n commendable_a because_o it_o must_v continue_v to_o be_v do_v to_o the_o world_n end_n last_o it_o be_v a_o matter_n of_o necessity_n that_o they_o must_v do_v it_o it_o be_v a_o than_o those_o that_o use_v it_o so_o seldom_o be_v this_o it_o that_o make_v we_o do_v it_o formal_o because_o we_o do_v it_o oft_o no_o sure_o as_o in_o die_v matter_n of_o prayer_n because_o we_o pray_v daily_o do_v we_o therefore_o pray_v formal_o no._n for_o if_o we_o do_v it_o conscionable_o it_o will_v make_v we_o far_o from_o formality_n for_o the_o frequent_a use_n of_o it_o bring_v we_o into_o that_o awe_n dread_n and_o reverence_n of_o god_n majesty_n that_o it_o will_v make_v we_o call_v our_o wit_n together_o and_o ransack_v every_o corner_n of_o our_o heart_n that_o so_o we_o may_v be_v fit_v to_o come_v into_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n at_o all_o time_n some_o other_o allegation_n they_o have_v but_o i_o will_v not_o now_o stand_v upon_o they_o the_o last_o use_n be_v this_o it_o teach_v all_o of_o we_o thankfulness_n to_o god_n that_o live_v here_o in_o this_o land_n and_o in_o this_o place_n where_o through_o god_n mercy_n we_o have_v opportunity_n and_o may_v
