christ_n in_o deed_n for_o because_o a_o great_a many_o be_v content_v with_o the_o name_n and_o few_o do_v understand_v what_o the_o name_n true_o and_o very_o contain_v in_o it_o and_o as_o there_o be_v in_o the_o scripture_n this_o double_a brightness_n whereof_o the_o one_o lie_v in_o the_o letter_n and_o many_o see_v what_o it_o mean_v by_o the_o external_a word_n and_o the_o other_o lie_v in_o the_o meaning_n of_o the_o letter_n and_o be_v perceive_v only_o by_o such_o as_o have_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n so_o be_v there_o two_o kind_n and_o sort_n of_o darkness_n and_o obscurity_n in_o the_o scripture_n the_o one_o in_o the_o letter_n and_o the_o other_o in_o the_o sense_n and_o take_n of_o the_o letter_n the_o outward_a obscurity_n be_v to_o be_v see_v in_o such_o as_o contemn_v the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o will_v not_o read_v it_o nor_o hear_v it_o as_o the_o turk_n and_o heathen_a and_o also_o the_o common_a sort_n that_o bear_v the_o name_n of_o christ_n be_v christen_v in_o christ_n name_n and_o outward_o be_v take_v to_o be_v very_a christian_n in_o deed_n and_o yet_o they_o know_v not_o so_o much_o as_o the_o letter_n of_o christ_n law_n that_o prescribe_v they_o what_o they_o shall_v do_v and_o what_o they_o shall_v not_o do_v and_o this_o obscurity_n be_v a_o brutish_a beastly_a and_o external_a darkness_n the_o other_o be_v obscurity_n or_o darkness_n inward_o in_o the_o text_n obscurity_n for_o although_o the_o letter_n be_v well_o know_v and_o the_o sound_n thereof_o seem_v to_o be_v plain_a yet_o the_o sense_n be_v not_o so_o common_a nor_o so_o manifest_a as_o the_o letter_n sound_v whereupon_o s._n paul_n bind_v all_o man_n in_o the_o understanding_n of_o the_o letter_n unto_o the_o analogy_n and_o proportion_n of_o faith_n that_o no_o one_o place_n be_v take_v contrary_a to_o many_o place_n whereof_o be_v gather_v the_o abridgement_n of_o our_o common_a créede_v accept_v at_o all_o time_n and_o of_o all_o christian_a man_n for_o a_o infallible_a truth_n so_o that_o whosoever_o beléeve_v it_o be_v account_v a_o good_a christian_n man_n and_o of_o this_o obscurity_n of_o the_o scripture_n in_o the_o sense_n and_o spirit_n be_v rise_v this_o troublesome_a contention_n about_o transubstantiation_n of_o bread_n and_o wine_n in_o the_o sacrament_n of_o christ_n body_n and_o blood_n for_o the_o ungodly_a sort_n will_v have_v no_o substance_n of_o bread_n and_o wine_n to_o remain_v in_o the_o sacrament_n and_o yet_o a_o corporal_a presence_n of_o body_n and_o blood_n contrary_a not_o only_o to_o the_o article_n of_o our_o faith_n 26._o that_o tell_v we_o he_o be_v in_o heaven_n and_o shall_v abide_v there_o until_o he_o come_v to_o judge_v the_o quick_a and_o the_o dead_a 14._o but_o also_o contrary_a to_o many_o other_o place_n of_o the_o scripture_n 12._o and_o this_o be_v no_o new_a thing_n 11._o to_o have_v and_o record_v the_o text_n and_o letter_n of_o the_o scripture_n and_o yet_o lack_v the_o effect_n and_o the_o very_a consolation_n of_o the_o scripture_n in_o deed_n 3._o for_o here_o in_o these_o two_o verse_n the_o prophet_n asaph_n do_v record_n and_o remember_v god_n do_n merciful_o 3_o in_o time_n past_a and_o yet_o take_v no_o more_o consolation_n thereof_o then_o he_o find_v in_o the_o bark_n of_o the_o letter_n or_o in_o the_o rehearsal_n of_o the_o history_n and_o the_o same_o he_o do_v of_o his_o own_o psalm_n and_o hymn_n whereof_o he_o make_v mention_n and_o yet_o by_o the_o same_o mean_v his_o spirit_n be_v bring_v into_o no_o further_a consideration_n of_o god_n truth_n than_o it_o be_v before_o with_o much_o heaviness_n and_o sorrow_n as_o the_o verse_n follow_v do_v declare_v so_o that_o in_o the_o affliction_n of_o trouble_n of_o the_o israelit_n it_o make_v no_o matter_n let_v every_o man_n in_o that_o case_n use_v his_o own_o judgement_n so_o that_o he_o mark_v the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o psalm_n there_o be_v to_o be_v note_v of_o these_o verse_n also_o this_o doctrine_n that_o what_o soever_o trouble_n y_z e_o spirit_n be_v bring_v unto_o whatsoever_o watch_n have_v take_v his_o eye_n &_o what_o soever_o vehemency_n of_o disease_n have_v take_v his_o speech_n from_o he_o yet_o under_o all_o these_o cross_n he_o curse_v not_o god_n nor_o grudge_v against_o his_o plague_n but_o as_o a_o man_n content_v give_v himself_o to_o record_n and_o to_o call_v to_o memory_n how_o god_n be_v wont_a to_o be_v unto_o man_n afflict_v and_o take_v account_v how_o in_o time_n past_a he_o have_v spend_v his_o year_n and_o remembrance_n when_o we_o be_v go_v that_o we_o live_v here_o to_o serve_v god_n and_o not_o to_o serve_v ourselves_o and_o it_o be_v a_o great_a help_n and_o no_o small_a consolation_n for_o a_o man_n that_o be_v in_o trouble_n &_o heaviness_n to_o think_v that_o he_o in_o his_o life_n before_o seek_v the_o glory_n of_o god_n &_o that_o testimony_n of_o conscience_n be_v more_o worth_a in_o the_o time_n of_o trouble_n than_o all_o other_o man_n deed_n for_o he_o not_o in_o that_o his_o seek_v god_n glory_n &_o set_v forth_o of_o the_o same_o can_v be_v his_o gage_n and_o ransom_n before_o god_n but_o because_o it_o be_v a_o very_a testimony_n that_o god_n once_o love_v he_o and_o give_v he_o of_o his_o bless_a spirit_n to_o indite_v something_o to_o god_n praise_n and_o honour_n and_o as_o godly_a psalm_n and_o virtuous_a hymn_n be_v testimony_n of_o a_o virtuous_a spirit_n so_o be_v wanton_a and_o adulterous_a ballad_n record_n of_o a_o vicious_a and_o sinful_a spirit_n and_o as_o the_o remembrance_n of_o good_a &_o virtuous_a work_n in_o the_o time_n of_o sickness_n and_o trouble_n be_v joyful_a and_o comfortable_a so_o be_v the_o remembrance_n of_o wicked_a do_n sorrowful_a and_o painful_a we_o be_v therefore_o teach_v by_o this_o prophet_n to_o be_v circumspect_a and_o wary_a how_o we_o accumulate_v &_o heap_v upon_o our_o soul_n infidelity_n and_o the_o wicked_a work_n thereof_o for_o as_o they_o be_v the_o only_a cause_n of_o trouble_n so_o do_v they_o not_o only_o work_v trouble_n but_o also_o increase_v trou_fw-fr and_o augment_v the_o heaviness_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o pain_n of_o the_o body_n as_o be_v declare_v marvellous_o by_o the_o grave_n and_o profound_a sentence_n follow_v wherein_o he_o declare_v what_o it_o be_v that_o his_o spirit_n search_v so_o diligent_o for_o it_o be_v this_o 7_o will_v the_o lord_n absent_v himself_o for_o ever_o and_o will_v he_o be_v no_o more_o entreat_v 8_o be_v his_o mercy_n clean_o go_v for_o ever_o and_o be_v his_o promise_n come_v utter_o to_o a_o end_n for_o evermore_o 9_o have_v god_n forget_v to_o be_v gracious_a and_o will_v he_o shut_v up_o his_o love_a kindness_n in_o rehearsal_n of_o the_o great_a terror_n and_o fear_n of_o the_o feel_v of_o god_n displeasure_n and_o anger_n towards_o the_o woeful_a spirit_n for_o sin_n the_o first_o meditation_n of_o the_o many_o time_n the_o word_n of_o god_n in_o a_o psalm_n worthy_a much_o read_n and_o more_o mark_v of_o the_o thing_n contain_v therein_o for_o he_o intreat_v all_o the_o psalm_n through_o that_o a_o godly_a life_n do_v consist_v in_o the_o observation_n of_o god_n law_n and_o therefore_o do_v he_o so_o many_o time_n in_o the_o psalm_n 119._o pray_v god_n to_o illuminate_v and_o endue_v his_o etc._n in_o this_o verse_n and_o in_o the_o next_o follow_v it_o be_v contain_v three_o kind_n of_o word_n remembrance_n meditation_n and_o speech_n by_o the_o first_o we_o learn_v that_o it_o profit_v nothing_o to_o read_v or_o hear_v god_n word_n except_o we_o remember_v it_o &_o bear_v it_o away_o with_o us._n by_o the_o next_o we_o learn_v that_o it_o avail_v we_o not_o to_o learn_v and_o bear_v the_o word_n of_o god_n in_o remembrance_n except_o by_o meditation_n and_o think_v upon_o it_o we_o understand_v what_o it_o mean_v and_o by_o the_o three_o we_o learn_v that_o neither_o the_o remembrance_n it_o nor_o the_o understanding_n thereof_o profit_v except_o we_o teach_v and_o instruct_v other_o in_o the_o same_o of_o who_o we_o have_v charge_n if_o we_o may_v now_o to_o consider_v further_o we_o see_v how_o the_o prophet_n begin_v with_o this_o word_n remembrance_n whereof_o it_o appear_v that_o he_o have_v learn_v before_o out_o of_o god_n word_n god_n nature_n towards_o penitent_a sinner_n to_o forgive_v they_o and_o towards_o wilful_a obstinate_a and_o impenitent_a sinner_n to_o be_v a_o just_a judge_n to_o punish_v they_o here_o be_v the_o ignorance_n of_o all_o people_n condemn_v that_o never_o learn_v to_o know_v god_n word_n in_o sickness_n nor_o in_o health_n but_o when_o they_o be_v trouble_v or_o sick_a they_o send_v for_o such_o as_o they_o think_v and_o fancy_n have_v learned_a and_o do_v remember_v how_o god_n word_n do_v comfort_n in_o adversity_n and_o then_o if_o he_o that_o be_v send_v for_o be_v not_o learned_a in_o god_n word_n he_o can_v remember_v how_o god_n be_v wont_a to_o comfort_v the_o trouble_a or_o sick_a then_o all_o that_o ever_o the_o sick_a man_n hear_v of_o a_o ignorant_a comforter_n or_o counsellor_n be_v as_o clean_o void_a of_o consolation_n or_o counsel_n as_o though_o he_o have_v never_o send_v for_o a_o counsellor_n or_o comforter_n for_o no_o man_n can_v have_v more_o of_o another_o than_o the_o other_o have_v himself_o which_o be_v neither_o knowledge_n counsel_n nor_o consolation_n out_o of_o god_n word_n therefore_o he_o be_v not_o able_a to_o give_v knowledge_n consolation_n nor_o comfort_n to_o another_o if_o the_o prophet_n asaph_n have_v be_v as_o the_o most_o part_n of_o people_n now_o a_o day_n be_v that_o fall_v sick_a and_o into_o many_o kind_n of_o trouble_n &_o have_v send_v for_o a_o ignorant_a fool_n which_o common_o be_v call_v a_o ghostly_a father_n he_o have_v be_v in_o as_o good_a take_n as_o these_o wretched_a soul_n be_v that_o be_v comfortless_o seek_v comfort_n where_o none_o be_v to_o be_v have_v seek_v knowledge_n where_o none_o be_v &_o seek_v counsel_n where_o ignorance_n abound_v let_v all_o man_n therefore_o remember_v this_o verse_n that_o when_o the_o prophet_n be_v in_o trouble_n he_o remember_v the_o wisdom_n and_o marvellous_a work_n of_o god_n for_o he_o know_v they_o before_o so_o let_v all_o man_n and_o woman_n learn_v before_o they_o come_v into_o trouble_n a_o true_a knowledge_n of_o god_n that_o in_o the_o time_n of_o trouble_n they_o may_v remember_v it_o to_o their_o consolation_n but_o now_o to_o the_o second_o word_n where_o he_o say_v he_o will_v meditate_v in_o all_o the_o work_n of_o god_n here_o be_v another_o notable_a doctrine_n that_o neither_o the_o learning_n of_o god_n word_n nor_o the_o remembrance_n thereof_o profit_v any_o thing_n except_o it_o be_v understand_v and_o apply_v to_o the_o use_n that_o god_n have_v appoint_v it_o for_o and_o here_o be_v two_o sort_n of_o people_n wonderful_o condemn_v the_o one_o sort_n be_v those_o that_o for_o custom_n or_o bondage_n to_o their_o profession_n do_v learn_v without_o the_o book_n a_o great_a part_n of_o the_o scripture_n or_o else_o by_o daily_a use_n in_o sing_v or_o say_v their_o service_n as_o it_o be_v call_v they_o learn_v to_o sing_v and_o say_v a_o great_a part_n of_o the_o bible_n but_o this_o avail_v nothing_o nor_o they_o understand_v it_o not_o in_o the_o sense_n and_o meaning_n that_o the_o holy_a ghost_n appoint_v it_o for_o nor_o perchance_o the_o grammatical_a construction_n thereof_o and_o these_o remembrance_n of_o god_n word_n be_v nothing_o but_o lip_n labour_n and_o honour_v of_o god_n with_o the_o mouth_n 29._o but_o the_o hart_n be_v far_o away_o which_o before_o god_n be_v in_o vain_a 15._o and_o of_o no_o estimation_n the_o other_o sort_n of_o people_n be_v such_o as_o profess_v the_o gospel_n that_o have_v learned_a much_o and_o can_v remember_v much_o but_o follow_v very_o little_a so_o that_o they_o be_v nothing_o the_o better_a for_o it_o the_o three_o word_n be_v that_o the_o prophet_n say_v he_o will_v speak_v of_o god_n and_o his_o work_n as_o outward_o and_o inward_o he_o remember_v they_o and_o with_o his_o spirit_n do_v meditate_v they_o as_o it_o be_v likewise_o the_o part_n and_o duty_n of_o all_o christian_a man_n so_o to_o do_v for_o as_o they_o believe_v in_o the_o heart_n
