limit_v the_o use_n of_o word_n in_o which_o they_o be_v to_o be_v take_v and_o man_n shall_v be_v bind_v to_o use_v they_o that_o way_n especial_o when_o they_o speak_v controversial_o and_o exact_o absolute_o and_o immediate_o necessary_a to_o salvation_n but_o such_o as_o have_v a_o kind_n of_o connexion_n with_o those_o that_o be_v necessary_a such_o as_o be_v near_o of_o kin_n to_o they_o and_o so_o to_o enlarge_v the_o bound_n and_o pale_a of_o the_o catechism_n according_a as_o their_o capacity_n be_v enlarge_v 3._o man_n grow_v still_o father_n and_o they_o be_v not_o at_o a_o stand_a state_n they_o come_v to_o be_v father_n there_o be_v a_o rise_n and_o growth_n young_a man_n may_v get_v strength_n by_o such_o a_o middle_a catechism_n that_o comprehend_v all_o the_o necessary_n and_o something_o more_o than_o that_o which_o be_v absolute_o necessary_a for_o further_a improvement_n but_o there_o be_v a_o three_o rank_n of_o father_n who_o be_v grow_v to_o the_o be_v have_v a_o platform_n for_o learner_n in_o these_o three_o rank_n so_o there_o shall_v be_v a_o platform_n for_o teacher_n for_o minister_n of_o the_o word_n if_o there_o be_v such_o a_o full_a and_o complete_a form_n of_o divinity_n as_o comprehend_v enough_o for_o minister_n to_o know_v judicious_o and_o sound_o and_o sober_o compose_v it_o will_v be_v a_o excellent_a establishment_n and_o settle_n of_o all_o man_n in_o the_o right_a way_n it_o will_v exceed_o advance_v all_o those_o other_o end_n which_o i_o mention_v before_o for_o which_o this_o be_v profitable_a hereby_o will_v appear_v more_o clear_o some_o thing_n that_o be_v more_o obscure_a before_o caution_n 2._o let_v i_o add_v this_o caution_n which_o be_v that_o this_o have_v need_n to_o be_v do_v choice_n 1._o with_o the_o great_a choice_n of_o ability_n and_o part_n the_o most_o grave_a the_o most_o pious_a the_o most_o judicious_a have_v need_v to_o be_v employ_v about_o the_o composure_n of_o this_o form_n it_o be_v not_o enough_o for_o every_o private_a man_n to_o contribute_v his_o own_o private_a form_n but_o it_o must_v be_v with_o the_o public_a judgement_n and_o currant_n consent_n of_o the_o most_o ancient_a and_o of_o best_a worth_n in_o the_o church_n of_o god_n and_o thereby_o it_o will_v as_o it_o shall_v be_v do_v a_o great_a deal_n more_o useful_a and_o substantial_a close_o 2._o every_o one_o must_v keep_v close_o to_o the_o pattern_n and_o language_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n to_o deliver_v as_o near_o as_o possible_o he_o may_v those_o thing_n that_o be_v to_o be_v convert_v to_o the_o church_n of_o god_n according_a to_o the_o language_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n that_o nothing_o may_v be_v deliver_v but_o the_o oracle_n of_o god_n and_o in_o the_o language_n of_o god_n oracle_n charitable_a 3._o that_o there_o shall_v be_v no_o peremptory_a press_n and_o urge_v of_o everyone_o to_o all_o the_o particular_n it_o be_v enough_o that_o a_o man_n receive_v the_o body_n and_o agree_v and_o profess_v the_o same_o main_a body_n of_o truth_n there_o shall_v not_o be_v a_o tyrannical_a press_v every_o man_n to_o hold_v all_o the_o particular_n in_o a_o word_n to_o make_v use_n of_o those_o gift_n which_o god_n be_v please_v to_o vouchsafe_v to_o communicate_v to_o his_o church_n more_o and_o more_o every_o day_n by_o virtue_n of_o which_o they_o may_v do_v more_o than_o other_o that_o have_v go_v before_o 2._o and_o in_o the_o

which_o may_v be_v exceed_o useful_a though_o not_o so_o well_o regard_v be_v a_o course_n of_o the_o mere_a and_o bare_a exposition_n of_o scripture_n to_o go_v through_o a_o whole_a chapter_n or_o some_o part_n of_o it_o and_o so_o to_o explicate_v it_o and_o deliver_v the_o full_a sum_n it_o will_v be_v wonderful_a profitable_a and_o necessary_a to_o acquaint_v the_o people_n with_o the_o whole_a chapter_n and_o the_o main_a scope_n and_o principal_a thing_n that_o be_v in_o it_o and_o go_v no_o further_o not_o to_o descend_v into_o every_o particular_a in_o it_o only_o by_o this_o interpretation_n to_o make_v the_o people_n acquaint_v with_o the_o scripture_n this_o indeed_o be_v the_o low_a degree_n 2._o and_o then_o there_o be_v another_o thing_n which_o i_o will_v have_v they_o to_o do_v to_o take_v another_o course_n like_o that_o of_o we_o viz._n dogmatic_a preach_v upon_o several_a text_n and_o several_a point_n but_o yet_o so_o as_o these_o several_a point_n may_v hold_v connexion_n to_o be_v make_v up_o in_o a_o body_n of_o divinity_n for_o the_o comprehension_n of_o all_o thing_n necessary_a to_o be_v know_v which_o we_o now_o intend_v and_o that_o be_v another_o way_n 3._o but_o then_o there_o come_v in_o a_o three_o thing_n truth_n as_o the_o first_o shall_v comprehend_v the_o explanation_n of_o the_o scripture_n and_o the_o second_o shall_v be_v for_o all_o the_o doctrinal_n so_o if_o there_o be_v a_o three_o thing_n add_v which_o be_v a_o course_n to_o comprehend_v all_o the_o exemplary_a historical_a part_n of_o the_o scripture_n part_n by_o part_n treat_v in_o they_o not_o of_o every_o particular_a part_n of_o the_o text_n but_o of_o the_o most_o remarkable_a example_n in_o they_o as_o how_o god_n have_v govern_v and_o preserve_v by_o his_o providence_n the_o church_n in_o all_o age_n from_o the_o very_a beginning_n of_o the_o world_n till_o the_o flood_n and_o from_o that_o till_o the_o promulgation_n of_o the_o law_n and_o from_o that_o till_o the_o build_n of_o the_o temple_n and_o so_o till_o the_o nativity_n of_o christ_n and_o so_o carry_v all_o along_o this_o will_v be_v a_o admirable_a thing_n to_o strengthen_v religion_n by_o see_v how_o god_n in_o all_o age_n have_v manage_v his_o church_n how_o he_o have_v go_v along_o with_o it_o and_o support_v his_o truth_n and_o show_v his_o goodness_n and_o mercy_n in_o a_o sweet_a and_o gracious_a way_n and_o so_o in_o all_o the_o scripture_n to_o mark_v out_o all_o the_o singular_a passage_n and_o example_n of_o god_n providence_n these_o will_v be_v best_a altogether_o although_o every_o one_o of_o they_o be_v good_a in_o particular_a 3._o to_o all_o private_a christian_n this_o may_v force_v they_o to_o their_o duty_n the_o exhortation_n that_o i_o shall_v press_v on_o they_o shall_v be_v in_o a_o word_n that_o christian_n 1._o they_o will_v not_o think_v this_o to_o be_v a_o thing_n out_o of_o their_o sphere_n and_o walk_n and_o therefore_o that_o they_o will_v labour_v and_o aim_v not_o only_o to_o have_v some_o scramble_n and_o scrape_n duty_n some_o break_a end_n of_o knowledge_n to_o harp_n upon_o this_o point_n and_o that_o point_n but_o to_o labour_v and_o strive_v to_o come_v to_o the_o knowledge_n of_o a_o form_n of_o sound_n and_o wholesome_a word_n to_o the_o whole_a body_n and_o frame_n of_o divinity_n at_o least_o the_o low_a form_n and_o so_o for_o young_a man_n and_o father_n to_o carry_v it_o along_o through_o all_o degree_n so_o that_o let_v no_o christian_a think_v this_o without_o the_o compass_n of_o his_o duty_n or_o unprofitable_a for_o he_o for_o he_o shall_v gain_v by_o it_o abundance_n of_o benefit_n and_o profit_n he_o may_v gain_v all_o the_o benefit_n i_o mention_v before_o it_o will_v help_v his_o understanding_n and_o his_o memory_n and_o his_o performance_n of_o duty_n make_v he_o receive_v more_o profit_n by_o other_o and_o make_v he_o more_o profitable_a unto_o other_o it_o now_o but_o that_o which_o i_o promise_v to_o discharge_v viz._n to_o acquaint_v you_o according_a to_o this_o rule_n and_o my_o present_a scope_n it_o be_v my_o purpose_n to_o enter_v on_o a_o form_n of_o sound_n and_o wholesome_a word_n even_o to_o comprehend_v the_o whole_a body_n of_o divinity_n at_o least_o the_o substantial_a and_o main_a truth_n that_o be_v necessary_a to_o be_v know_v and_o believe_v to_o salvation_n but_o before_o i_o enter_v into_o any_o particular_n which_o will_v be_v several_a and_o many_o i_o will_v give_v you_o at_o first_o a_o prospect_n of_o all_o a_o general_a delineation_n of_o the_o whole_a compass_n and_o course_n which_o if_o god_n permit_v life_n and_o liberty_n i_o intend_v to_o go_v through_o i_o be_v at_o a_o stay_n a_o long_a while_n with_o myself_o whether_o i_o shall_v do_v it_o or_o no_o their_o seem_a no_o beauty_n or_o profitableness_n in_o a_o mere_a behold_n of_o a_o bare_a skeleton_n a_o naked_a anatomy_n of_o the_o sum_n of_o religion_n but_o i_o consider_v with_o myself_o that_o we_o spend_v many_o hour_n hour_n
i_o say_v i_o have_v ever_o apprehend_v will_v be_v a_o very_a good_a way_n and_o of_o very_o much_o use_v and_o purpose_n now_o you_o shall_v find_v that_o all_o the_o doctrine_n belong_v either_o to_o speculative_a divinity_n and_o to_o search_v divinity_n in_o the_o school_n or_o else_o to_o practise_v divinity_n i_o say_v you_o shall_v find_v more_o of_o they_o as_o i_o conceive_v in_o this_o platform_n that_o i_o shall_v now_o suggest_v than_o in_o any_o that_o i_o yet_o see_v to_o which_o premise_v only_o one_o thing_n more_o i_o shall_v come_v i_o premise_v therefore_o and_o i_o hope_v that_o no_o man_n will_v expect_v or_o think_v that_o i_o presume_v i_o shall_v prosecute_v it_o but_o only_o i_o desire_v to_o discharge_v my_o duty_n according_a to_o that_o measure_n of_o strength_n and_o life_n that_o the_o lord_n shall_v vouchsafe_v i_o which_o make_v i_o do_v that_o i_o now_o intend_v viz._n to_o give_v you_o a_o brief_a delineation_n of_o all_o but_o i_o desire_v you_o not_o to_o expect_v that_o this_o can_v be_v do_v with_o any_o mixture_n of_o pleasure_n pleasant_a or_o that_o it_o will_v be_v over_o easy_a or_o over_o facile_a to_o apprehend_v only_o i_o shall_v now_o run_v brief_o through_o the_o whole_a as_o if_o a_o man_n shall_v present_v you_o with_o the_o scelleton_n or_o body_n of_o a_o man_n without_o either_o skin_n or_o flesh_n there_o be_v no_o beauty_n or_o pleasantness_n in_o such_o a_o sight_n yet_o there_o be_v all_o the_o substantial_n whereof_o the_o body_n be_v make_v there_o be_v the_o bone_n that_o be_v the_o very_a upholder_n of_o the_o fabric_n of_o the_o body_n or_o as_o it_o be_v in_o the_o case_n of_o ezekiel_n vision_n when_o he_o be_v carry_v into_o a_o field_n where_o there_o be_v nothing_o but_o dry_a bone_n there_o be_v no_o beauty_n in_o that_o sight_n but_o the_o beauty_n be_v afterward_o when_o those_o bone_n begin_v to_o stir_v and_o move_v and_o come_v every_o one_o to_o their_o place_n and_o do_v close_o up_o with_o the_o flesh_n and_o the_o spirit_n of_o life_n come_v on_o they_o than_o it_o be_v a_o beautiful_a sight_n so_o now_o here_o in_o the_o mere_a naked_a demonstration_n of_o the_o thing_n you_o must_v not_o look_v neither_o indeed_o be_v it_o propound_v with_o that_o apprehension_n that_o it_o shall_v be_v very_o delightful_a or_o that_o there_o shall_v be_v any_o thing_n in_o it_o to_o move_v that_o way_n but_o rather_o mere_o for_o the_o profit_n of_o it_o because_o it_o may_v be_v a_o good_a guide_n for_o the_o comprehend_v and_o go_v on_o with_o through_o all_o as_o if_o a_o man_n be_v in_o a_o journey_n and_o have_v his_o compass_n with_o he_o by_o which_o he_o may_v know_v where_o he_o be_v it_o be_v but_o only_o for_o profit_n and_o therefore_o i_o hope_v man_n will_v bear_v with_o that_o dispense_v with_o the_o other_o viz._n pleasantness_n though_o it_o seem_v but_o rough_a to_o propound_v mere_o naked_a bone_n without_o any_o beauty_n or_o comeliness_n now_o brief_o to_o present_v the_o frame_n that_o i_o be_o to_o go_v through_o i_o tell_v you_o that_o long_v ago_o i_o make_v the_o frame_n and_o then_o i_o intend_v to_o make_v the_o and_o second_o there_o be_v the_o fabric_n itself_o the_o whole_a pile_n and_o edifice_n there_o be_v four_o thing_n which_o i_o desire_v to_o propound_v in_o the_o very_a porch_n and_o frontispiece_n in_o the_o entrance_n into_o all_o the_o matter_n of_o religion_n and_o thing_n to_o be_v know_v because_o they_o be_v of_o general_a importance_n and_o use_n as_o be_v the_o very_a first_o and_o most_o sensible_a inquiry_n that_o will_v be_v make_v in_o the_o entry_n into_o this_o profession_n the_o two_o former_a of_o they_o lie_v down_o to_o we_o the_o mark_n that_o we_o shall_v aim_v at_o the_o two_o latter_a the_o line_n or_o rule_v by_o which_o we_o must_v level_v at_o that_o mark_n happiness_n 1._o the_o first_o inquiry_n will_v be_v concerning_o happiness_n which_o be_v the_o
