light_n of_o holy_a truth_n which_o be_v before_o the_o word_n write_v and_o this_o which_o shine_v in_o the_o holy_a scripture_n be_v the_o same_o and_o therefore_o the_o papist_n be_v yet_o more_o into_o iron_n against_o we_o 3._o among_o these_o plant_n observe_v how_o weed_n and_o other_o hurtful_a thing_n do_v grow_v of_o themselves_o but_o the_o best_a and_o most_o useful_a must_v be_v careful_o plant_v so_o sin_n and_o corruption_n spring_v natural_o out_o of_o the_o evil_a soil_n of_o our_o heart_n but_o grace_n and_o holiness_n be_v of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n his_o plantation_n again_o barren_a tree_n be_v cut_v down_o by_o the_o provident_a husbandman_n that_o they_o may_v not_o cumber_v the_o ground_n as_o you_o see_v in_o the_o gospel_n which_o shall_v move_v we_o by_o bear_v fruit_n unto_o god_n to_o work_v out_o our_o own_o salvation_n with_o fear_n and_o tremble_a the_o leaf_n of_o a_o outward_a profession_n be_v not_o sufficient_a but_o to_o they_o must_v be_v join_v the_o fruit_n of_o a_o sanctify_a conversation_n the_o tree_n and_o every_o branch_n and_o twig_n thereof_o receive_v sap_n life_n nourishment_n from_o the_o root_n every_o true_a believer_n receive_v heavenly_a life_n and_o grace_n from_o christ_n jesus_n so_o long_o as_o the_o branch_n be_v join_v to_o the_o tree_n and_o so_o to_o the_o root_n it_o receive_v benefit_n and_o refreshment_n from_o the_o dew_n and_o rain_n but_o if_o it_o be_v cut_v off_o from_o the_o tree_n the_o sweet_a shower_n can_v preserve_v it_o from_o be_v wither_v he_o that_o be_v true_o unite_v to_o christ_n as_o a_o branch_n to_o the_o root_n by_o the_o spirit_n and_o faith_n he_o receive_v benefit_n growth_n and_o spiritual_a refreshment_n from_o the_o outward_a mean_n of_o grace_n the_o ministry_n of_o the_o word_n and_o sacrament_n but_o if_o he_o be_v not_o true_o unite_v to_o he_o the_o sweet_a dew_n that_o ever_o fall_v from_o heaven_n can_v keep_v spiritual_a life_n within_o he_o on_o the_o other_o side_n though_o the_o branch_n do_v receive_v life_n and_o nourishment_n from_o the_o root_n yet_o it_o want_v refreshment_n from_o the_o shower_n of_o heaven_n so_o those_o fanatical_a dreamer_n be_v to_o be_v condemn_v who_o pretend_v a_o union_n with_o christ_n and_o partake_v of_o his_o spirit_n and_o therefore_o brag_v they_o have_v no_o need_n of_o the_o word_n preach_v or_o any_o outward_a mean_n again_o let_v the_o renew_n of_o the_o face_n of_o the_o earth_n by_o these_o creature_n every_o spring_n put_v thou_o in_o mind_n of_o the_o wonderful_a efficacy_n of_o god_n his_o word_n which_o from_o the_o beginning_n unto_o this_o present_a time_n have_v make_v the_o earth_n thus_o fruitful_a and_o let_v it_o teach_v thou_o to_o rely_v upon_o his_o truth_n and_o promise_n in_o other_o thing_n as_o well_o as_o this_o chap._n vi_o meditation_n on_o the_o four_o day_n work_n sect_n 1._o from_o the_o third_z i_o come_v to_o the_o four_o day_n that_o as_o the_o water_n which_o be_v before_o disperse_v all_o abroad_o upon_o and_o about_o the_o earth_n be_v on_o the_o three_o day_n gather_v into_o one_o store-house_n call_v sea_n so_o the_o light_n which_o be_v before_o diffuse_v through_o the_o huge_a space_n of_o the_o creation_n be_v now_o as_o it_o be_v draw_v together_o into_o one_o body_n of_o the_o sun_n as_o a_o full_a and_o common_a treasury_n consider_v here_o that_o the_o lord_n who_o be_v in_o himself_o infinite_o more_o bright_a than_o the_o light_n itself_o need_v no_o light_n in_o respect_n of_o himself_o and_o therefore_o it_o be_v for_o we_o that_o he_o make_v the_o light_n and_o we_o shall_v bless_v he_o for_o it_o so_o in_o regard_n of_o himself_o he_o need_v no_o word_n nor_o revelation_n of_o heavenly_a mystery_n be_v infinite_a in_o all_o knowledge_n and_o wisdom_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v for_o we_o that_o he_o give_v his_o word_n to_o be_v a_o light_n and_o cause_v by_o his_o spirit_n the_o bright_a beam_n of_o holy_a truth_n to_o be_v cast_v abroad_o into_o the_o dark_a world_n therefore_o we_o may_v conceive_v how_o shameful_a our_o sin_n and_o unthankfulness_n be_v in_o the_o house_n of_o god_n upon_o our_o knee_n rather_o than_o go_v without_o this_o light_n 2._o consider_v that_o although_o the_o lord_n be_v please_v to_o give_v light_n to_o the_o world_n yet_o there_o need_v no_o sun_n whereby_o to_o do_v it_o witness_v the_o light_n of_o the_o three_o first_o day_n wherein_o no_o sun_n shine_v so_o when_o it_o please_v the_o lord_n to_o give_v the_o light_n of_o heavenly_a knowledge_n to_o his_o
righteousness_n viz._n the_o grace_n of_o christ-iesus_n yet_o she_o have_v her_o spot_n in_o this_o life_n which_o shall_v never_o whole_o be_v do_v away_o until_o the_o life_n to_o come_v when_o she_o shall_v be_v present_v by_o christ_n to_o the_o father_n not_o have_v spot_n or_o wrinkle_n or_o any_o such_o thing_n and_o therefore_o to_o imagine_v a_o church_n on_o earth_n free_a from_o all_o blemish_n be_v to_o fancy_v a_o moon_n without_o spot_n 3._o as_o the_o moon_n have_v receive_v light_a from_o the_o sun_n give_v light_n to_o other_o so_o that_o they_o see_v by_o the_o light_n of_o the_o sun_n shine_v in_o the_o moon_n and_o then_o reflect_v from_o the_o moon_n upon_o the_o creature_n here_o below_o so_o the_o church_n and_o every_o true_a member_n of_o it_o have_v receive_v the_o light_n of_o heavenly_a knowledge_n and_o sanctification_n from_o the_o sun_n must_v cause_v this_o light_n to_o shine_v before_o man_n that_o they_o may_v see_v his_o good_a work_n and_o so_o be_v move_v to_o glorify_v his_o father_n which_o be_v in_o heaven_n yea_o to_o glorify_v christ-iesus_n who_o be_v the_o sun_n from_o who_o the_o light_n which_o shine_v in_o their_o heart_n be_v derive_v and_o receive_v and_o to_o be_v whole_o dark_a and_o void_a of_o the_o fruit_n of_o holiness_n be_v a_o argument_n that_o we_o have_v no_o communion_n with_o christ-iesus_n you_o must_v therefore_o shine_v to_o other_o by_o a_o holy_a example_n that_o they_o which_o will_v not_o see_v by_o the_o sunshine_n of_o the_o word_n may_v yet_o see_v by_o the_o moonlight_n of_o their_o life_n derive_v from_o this_o sun_n 4._o again_o as_o thou_o see_v the_o moon_n to_o shine_v in_o a_o very_a dark_a night_n as_o it_o can_v choose_v but_o shine_v have_v receive_v light_a from_o the_o sun_n so_o in_o the_o midst_n of_o a_o most_o crooked_a generation_n in_o evil_a time_n in_o place_n that_o abound_v with_o child_n of_o darkness_n and_o work_n of_o darkness_n a_o christian_a must_v not_o forbear_v to_o shine_v in_o holiness_n have_v receive_v light_a from_o jesus-christ_n 5._o the_o moon_n care_v not_o though_o thou_o wish_fw-mi person_n hate_v her_o light_n because_o it_o discover_v their_o work_n of_o darkness_n â—either_o do_v she_o cease_v to_o shine_v because_o the_o dog_n bark_n at_o she_o so_o a_o christian_a have_v receive_v light_a from_o christ_n must_v not_o she_o at_o sometime_o but_o dark_o visible_a so_o the_o church_n be_v always_o visible_a unto_o they_o who_o have_v eye_n to_o see_v she_o but_o at_o sometime_o she_o make_v a_o dim_a appearance_n than_o at_o other_o 8._o moreover_o as_o the_o moon_n when_o she_o be_v in_o conjunction_n with_o the_o sun_n do_v then_o shine_v less_o unto_o we_o than_o when_o she_o be_v in_o opposition_n one_o half_a space_n of_o heaven_n distant_a from_o it_o for_o when_o she_o be_v join_v with_o the_o sun_n she_o be_v at_o the_o change_n but_o when_o there_o be_v this_o diametrical_a opposition_n she_o their_o constant_a and_o orderly_a motion_n admire_v he_o that_o tell_v the_o number_n of_o the_o star_n and_o call_v they_o all_o by_o their_o name_n think_v of_o the_o star_n that_o guide_v the_o wise_a man_n unto_o christ_n and_o pray_v that_o the_o day_n star_n may_v rise_v in_o thy_o heart_n 2._o consider_v how_o bright_a the_o star_n shine_v in_o a_o cold_a night_n and_o think_v how_o thy_o soul_n shall_v shine_v in_o grace_n in_o time_n of_o adversity_n 3._o consider_v that_o neither_o moon_n nor_o star_n do_v carry_v any_o special_a brightness_n in_o the_o presence_n of_o the_o sun_n and_o though_o the_o moon_n be_v see_v yet_o she_o shine_v but_o dimme_o or_o not_o at_o all_o but_o the_o star_n be_v not_o apparent_a so_o the_o church_n in_o general_n have_v no_o excellency_n in_o comparison_n of_o the_o excellency_n of_o christ_n and_o as_o for_o the_o particular_a member_n they_o be_v like_o star_n after_o sun_n rise_v their_o beauty_n be_v scarce_o to_o be_v discern_v 4._o remember_v our_o saviour_n comparison_n who_o call_v the_o minister_n of_o the_o church_n star_n which_o he_o hold_v in_o his_o right_a hand_n rev._n 1._o and_o therefore_o think_v that_o as_o the_o star_n be_v the_o ornament_n of_o the_o heaven_n so_o be_v faithful_a minister_n the_o ornament_n of_o the_o church_n and_o not_o esteem_v by_o christ_n as_o they_o be_v by_o the_o world_n the_o offscouring_a of_o all_o thing_n 5._o consider_v those_o comet_n or_o blazing-star_n though_o they_o make_v a_o great_a blaze_n than_o the_o true_a star_n of_o heaven_n yet_o be_v they_o never_o fix_v in_o the_o heaven_n and_o therefore_o be_v soon_o extinguish_v so_o those_o hypocrite_n that_o make_v but_o a_o blaze_n for_o a_o time_n they_o be_v but_o meteor_n wander_v in_o the_o air_n of_o unstable_a affection_n not_o fix_v in_o the_o church_n nor_o engraft_v into_o christ._n 6._o as_o the_o star_n be_v numblerless_a so_o be_v the_o heir_n of_o glory_n though_o far_o short_a
