their_o own_o congregation_n as_o on_o the_o other_o side_n they_o that_o own_o another_o church_n beside_o congregational_a do_v assert_v that_o minister_n have_v a_o double_a relation_n the_o one_o to_o their_o own_o particular_a flock_n the_o other_o to_o the_o whole_a church_n and_o thus_o much_o for_o the_o rise_n of_o the_o question_n for_o our_o brethren_n mind_n we_o shall_v not_o need_v to_o go_v far_o they_o affirm_v positive_o that_o officer_n stand_v in_o relation_n to_o a_o particular_a church_n only_o and_o they_o deny_v they_o to_o be_v officer_n to_o a_o church_n universal_a or_o to_o any_o but_o their_o own_o flock_n pag._n 8._o but_o here_o i_o can_v but_o take_v notice_n of_o a_o weighty_a difference_n among_o our_o congregational_a brethren_n in_o which_o they_o may_v be_v judge_v by_o the_o fruit_n there_o be_v hardly_o any_o one_o principle_n which_o have_v be_v more_o scandalous_a to_o thousand_o of_o the_o most_o judicious_a of_o god_n people_n both_o minister_n and_o other_o and_o more_o unhappy_o instrumental_a to_o the_o introduction_n and_o propagation_n of_o all_o those_o loose_a false_a vain_a frivolous_a and_o pernicious_a doctrine_n which_o abound_v in_o the_o nation_n than_o the_o profession_n and_o practice_n of_o this_o specious_a opinion_n of_o liberty_n of_o prophesy_v nor_o do_v this_o only_a flow_n from_o the_o abuse_n of_o that_o principle_n as_o our_o brethren_n will_v insinuate_v but_o from_o the_o very_a principle_n itself_o as_o they_o state_n it_o for_o so_o long_o as_o they_o hold_v that_o it_o be_v the_o duty_n of_o every_o gift_a man_n as_o such_o to_o exercise_v his_o gift_n which_o they_o assert_v pag._n 32._o and_o that_o if_o he_o have_v receive_v gift_n to_o teach_v public_o he_o must_v use_v they_o also_o public_o which_o they_o avow_v pag._n 47._o and_o that_o he_o himself_o may_v judge_v of_o his_o gift_n and_o may_v preach_v though_o it_o be_v not_o so_o expedient_a without_o any_o further_a call_n which_o they_o profess_v pag._n 20._o what_o can_v be_v expect_v but_o that_o this_o doctrine_n shall_v be_v a_o trojan_a horse_n whence_o the_o adversary_n of_o the_o truth_n may_v break_v out_o welfare_n nothing_o under_o god_n and_o his_o word_n be_v more_o necessary_a and_o conducible_a than_o the_o ordinance_n of_o the_o ministry_n and_o therefore_o nothing_o require_v great_a care_n in_o the_o disposal_n of_o it_o then_o that_o do_v and_o in_o nothing_o be_v the_o apostle_n more_o solicitous_a then_o in_o commit_v this_o office_n and_o work_n to_o fit_a person_n and_o nothing_o will_v have_v be_v more_o incongruous_a to_o the_o wisdom_n and_o faithfulness_n of_o the_o head_n of_o the_o church_n then_o to_o prostitute_v they_o to_o the_o fancy_n and_o humour_n of_o every_o invader_n nothing_o more_o unbecoming_a the_o carefulness_n of_o our_o great_a shepherd_n then_o to_o suffer_v any_o wolf_n that_o say_v or_o think_v he_o be_v fit_a for_o it_o to_o take_v the_o office_n of_o the_o shepherd_n or_o to_o do_v his_o work_n both_o which_o come_v to_o one_o and_o be_v utter_o pernicious_a to_o the_o flock_n the_o consideration_n of_o these_o and_o such_o like_a thing_n occasion_v the_o provincial_a assembly_n to_o take_v it_o into_o their_o serious_a thought_n not_o only_o to_o assert_v the_o office_n of_o the_o ministry_n but_o also_o to_o regulate_v the_o work_n of_o the_o ministry_n and_o to_o confine_v it_o within_o those_o just_a boundary_n which_o god_n and_o man_n have_v set_v for_o it_o this_o be_v do_v in_o that_o late_a piece_n call_v jus_fw-la divinum_fw-la ministerii_fw-la evangelici_fw-la a_o piece_n which_o as_o it_o have_v through_o god_n blessing_n be_v satisfactory_a to_o the_o conscience_n of_o many_o person_n so_o have_v it_o have_v a_o contrary_a effect_n upon_o other_o as_o might_n in_o reason_n be_v expect_v to_o draw_v forth_o and_o derive_v opposition_n upon_o it_o from_o divers_a hand_n and_o among_o other_o those_o of_o our_o brethren_n with_o who_o i_o have_v now_o to_o do_v and_o although_o it_o be_v not_o fit_a nor_o usual_a for_o assembly_n to_o take_v notice_n of_o the_o contradiction_n of_o particular_a person_n yet_o because_o our_o brethren_n have_v with_o unite_a force_n undertake_v the_o refutation_n of_o part_n of_o that_o treatise_n and_o because_o they_o have_v endeavour_v to_o manage_v it_o with_o scripture_n argument_n and_o evidence_n which_o just_o bear_v most_o sway_n in_o these_o time_n and_o because_o divers_a well-meaning_a person_n and_o that_o not_o only_o such_o as_o be_v injudicious_a be_v inconsiderable_a but_o also_o such_o as_o seem_v to_o be_v pillar_n in_o their_o way_n have_v declare_v their_o high_a approbation_n of_o it_o and_o assert_v the_o unanswerableness_n of_o it_o it_o be_v therefore_o think_v fit_a that_o something_o shall_v be_v do_v by_o way_n of_o reply_n and_o according_o the_o provincial_n assembly_n be_v please_v to_o lay_v it_o upon_o my_o shoulder_n and_o i_o engage_v in_o the_o work_n and_o as_o i_o love_v not_o unnecessary_a delay_n so_o i_o hope_v long_o since_o to_o have_v give_v the_o world_n a_o account_n of_o it_o but_o it_o please_v that_o supreme_a providence_n which_o order_v all_o affair_n unexpected_o to_o surprise_v i_o with_o a_o sad_a and_o dangerous_a convulsion_n which_o be_v seat_v in_o the_o in_o the_o apostle_n preach_v to_o heathen_n act_n 11._o &_o 16._o and_o yet_o say_v they_o they_o be_v no_o officer_n to_o such_o unbeliever_n whereby_o it_o be_v plain_a that_o they_o deny_v not_o only_o ordinary_a pastor_n but_o also_o apostle_n to_o be_v officer_n to_o heathen_n which_o also_o further_o appear_v by_o the_o reason_n they_o add_v why_o such_o minister_n be_v no_o officer_n to_o heathen_n which_o be_v common_a to_o apostle_n with_o other_o minister_n viz._n because_o they_o can_v as_o officer_n exercise_v church-government_n towards_o they_o which_o hold_v true_a even_o of_o the_o apostle_n what_o have_v we_o to_o do_v to_o judge_v they_o that_o be_v without_o 1_o cor._n 5._o now_o if_o the_o apostle_n who_o be_v according_a to_o our_o brethren_n only_a church-officer_n yet_o act_v as_o officer_n towards_o such_o as_o be_v whole_o without_o the_o church_n and_o towards_o heathen_n much_o more_o be_v it_o true_a of_o ordinary_a pastor_n that_o albeit_o they_o be_v officer_n in_o special_a to_o their_o particular_a flock_n yet_o they_o be_v officer_n and_o act_n as_o officer_n towards_o other_o church_n 2._o apostle_n and_o pastor_n be_v parallel_v in_o this_o case_n eph._n 4._o 11_o 12._o and_o he_o give_v some_o apostle_n and_o some_o pastor_n and_o teacher_n for_o the_o perfect_a of_o the_o saint_n for_o the_o work_n of_o the_o ministry_n for_o the_o edify_n of_o the_o body_n of_o christ._n from_o whence_o it_o be_v most_o evident_a that_o the_o object_n of_o the_o apostolical_a and_o pastoral_a office_n be_v one_o and_o the_o same_o both_o of_o they_o be_v by_o office_n relate_v to_o the_o saint_n not_o only_o that_o be_v actual_o bring_v in_o but_o also_o to_o those_o that_o be_v to_o be_v gather_v and_o the_o office_n be_v appoint_v and_o the_o officer_n bestow_v for_o this_o very_a end_n for_o the_o edify_n of_o the_o body_n of_o christ_n by_o which_o body_n of_o christ_n we_o must_v with_o judicious_a interpreter_n necessary_o understand_v the_o whole_a collection_n of_o all_o christ_n member_n in_o all_o age_n of_o the_o church_n all_o which_o in_o scripture_n phrase_n go_v to_o the_o make_v up_o of_o christ_n body_n so_o of_o building_n imply_v as_o well_o the_o gather_v together_o of_o stone_n for_o the_o building_n and_o the_o lay_n of_o the_o foundation_n as_o the_o raise_n up_o of_o the_o build_n and_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o body_n as_o we_o have_v now_o explain_v it_o necessary_o require_v that_o this_o edify_n shall_v be_v understand_v extensive_o as_o well_o as_o intensive_o i_o shall_v contract_v all_o this_o into_o a_o short_a syllogism_n the_o body_n of_o christ_n in_o its_o latitude_n be_v the_o correlatum_fw-la or_o the_o object_n of_o the_o pastoral_n office_n but_o the_o body_n of_o christ_n include_v heathen_n therefore_o heathen_n to_o be_v convert_v be_v the_o object_n and_o correlate_n of_o the_o pastoral_n office_n the_o major_n be_v plain_a from_o the_o text_n and_o what_o have_v be_v say_v the_o minor_a also_o be_v no_o less_o evident_a that_o heathen_n be_v a_o part_n of_o christ_n body_n they_o be_v call_v his_o sheep_n john_n 10._o 16._o other_o sheep_n i_o have_v which_o be_v not_o of_o this_o fold_n heathen_n to_o be_v convert_v christ_n lay_v down_o his_o life_n for_o else_o they_o have_v never_o be_v convert_v and_o yet_o he_o lay_v down_o his_o life_n only_o for_o his_o body_n eph._n 5._o and_o therefore_o they_o be_v his_o member_n and_o part_n of_o his_o body_n and_o therefore_o they_o be_v the_o object_n and_o correlate_n of_o the_o pastoral_n office_n and_o as_o the_o whole_a church_n in_o all_o age_n to_o wit_n include_v person_n yet_o uncalled_a aug._n but_o by_o election_n belong_v to_o it_o be_v the_o correlatum_fw-la of_o the_o minister_n and_o ministerial_a office_n in_o all_o age_n so_o the_o whole_a church_n in_o one_o age_n include_v such_o as_o by_o predestination_n though_o not_o yet_o by_o actual_a vocation_n and_o correlate_n of_o a_o minister_n but_o also_o such_o as_o be_v not_o yet_o member_n of_o any_o particular_a church_n nor_o of_o any_o church_n at_o all_o the_o second_o argument_n may_v be_v take_v from_o 2_o cor._n 5._o 20._o where_o the_o reconcilable_a world_n which_o consist_v of_o such_o as_o be_v yet_o without_o and_o no_o member_n of_o the_o church_n be_v make_v the_o chief_a object_n and_o correlatum_fw-la of_o the_o office_n of_o the_o ministry_n and_o from_o thence_o i_o shall_v thus_o argue_v to_o who_o minister_n act_n as_o ambassador_n to_o they_o they_o act_n as_o officer_n least_o obligation_n lie_v in_o our_o brethren_n opinion_n be_v command_v it_o be_v true_a no_o preacher_n be_v in_o scripture_n oblige_v to_o preach_v in_o such_o or_o such_o a_o place_n nor_o to_o preach_v so_o often_o the_o determination_n of_o these_o and_o other_o like_a circumstance_n be_v leave_v to_o the_o rule_n of_o prudence_n and_o general_a direction_n of_o the_o word_n yet_o all_o be_v oblige_v to_o be_v instant_a and_o diligent_a in_o the_o work_n and_o as_o the_o service_n of_o the_o church_n be_v unspeakable_o to_o be_v prefer_v before_o the_o best_a merchandise_n and_o god_n glory_n before_o their_o own_o worldly_a interest_n so_o when_o a_o man_n have_v receive_v gift_n for_o the_o service_n of_o preach_v if_o these_o command_v oblige_v he_o to_o preach_v they_o oblige_v he_o to_o throw_v off_o all_o the_o impediment_n of_o that_o noble_a work_n and_o to_o give_v himself_o whole_o to_o these_o thing_n and_o the_o rather_o because_o of_o our_o brethren_n own_a argument_n a_o man_n must_v exercise_v his_o gift_n as_o he_o have_v receive_v it_o now_o if_o a_o man_n have_v ability_n to_o preach_v ordinary_o and_o constant_o every_o lord_n day_n if_o he_o will_v use_v sufficient_a diligence_n such_o a_o man_n discharge_v not_o his_o trust_n in_o preach_v spare_o and_o occasional_o only_a obj._n but_o they_o say_v that_o the_o case_n of_o a_o minister_n and_o a_o gift_a brother_n be_v alike_o in_o this_o a_o minister_n sin_n not_o if_o he_o be_v put_v out_o of_o employment_n and_o cast_v into_o a_o place_n where_o his_o gift_n be_v not_o desire_v etc._n etc._n and_o so_o it_o be_v with_o gift_a man_n etc._n etc._n ans._n will_v our_o brethren_n then_o say_v that_o other_o not_o desire_v a_o man_n to_o exercise_v his_o gift_n will_v justify_v
