be_v not_o secure_a from_o his_o spiritual_a enemy_n and_o with_o respect_n to_o the_o multitude_n of_o vain_a and_o evil_a thought_n that_o then_o be_v apt_a to_o come_v into_o his_o mind_n it_o may_v be_v true_o say_v of_o he_o nunquam_fw-la minus_fw-la solus_fw-la quam_fw-la cum_fw-la solus_fw-la upon_o which_o account_n it_o be_v that_o the_o devil_n choose_v that_o opportunity_n â—_o to_o tempt_v our_o saviour_n when_o he_o be_v in_o the_o wilderness_n alone_o because_o he_o well_o know_v that_o at_o such_o a_o time_n as_o that_o the_o mind_n of_o man_n be_v at_o leisure_n his_o thought_n will_v be_v more_o relax_v and_o wander_a and_o so_o more_o easy_a to_o be_v win_v by_o his_o suggestion_n and_o to_o comply_v with_o his_o temptation_n a_o monastic_a life_n do_v not_o secure_v a_o man_n from_o evil_a thought_n but_o in_o some_o sort_n make_v he_o the_o more_o obnoxious_a to_o they_o the_o devil_n will_v pay_v his_o unwelcome_a visit_n to_o we_o in_o our_o privacy_n as_o well_o as_o in_o conversation_n and_o the_o hermit_n in_o his_o cell_n have_v as_o much_o reason_n to_o look_v well_o to_o his_o thought_n as_o he_o that_o be_v in_o the_o crowd_n of_o this_o world_n and_o therefore_o i_o take_v it_o to_o be_v very_o advisable_v that_o at_o any_o time_n when_o we_o be_v alone_o we_o suffer_v not_o our_o thought_n to_o scatter_v and_o fly_v at_o random_n for_o unhappy_a conjunction_n oftentimes_o prove_v the_o consequence_n of_o such_o erratical_a motion_n but_o to_o confine_v they_o to_o some_o certain_a bound_n and_o determinate_a subject_n such_o as_o the_o power_n or_o goodness_n of_o almighty_a god_n or_o the_o like_a which_o will_v sweet_o employ_v our_o thought_n and_o refresh_v our_o mind_n and_o the_o more_o profitable_o to_o think_v on_o any_o such_o subject_n we_o may_v when_o we_o be_v alone_o likewise_o think_v on_o our_o own_o sinfulness_n be_v judge_v ourselves_o confess_v our_o sin_n and_o lay_v open_a our_o heart_n before_o god_n which_o will_v make_v the_o goodness_n of_o god_n more_o illustrious_a and_o admirable_a and_o also_o keep_v we_o from_o be_v assault_v with_o any_o dreadful_a and_o terrify_v thought_n with_o any_o filthy_a and_o profligate_v thought_n and_o our_o heart_n from_o be_v deadn_v and_o stupefy_v with_o mopishness_n and_o drowsiness_n etc._n etc._n which_o at_o such_o a_o time_n we_o be_v more_o especial_o prone_a to_o again_o in_o the_o next_o place_n let_v we_o be_v very_o careful_a to_o entertain_v the_o good_a motion_n of_o god_n holy_a spirit_n to_o obey_v his_o heavenly_a inspiration_n to_o bow_v to_o his_o sacred_a suggestion_n when_o at_o any_o time_n we_o be_v bless_v therewith_o every_o good_a thought_n shall_v be_v make_v welcome_a and_o cherish_v and_o improve_v by_o we_o and_o by_o that_o mean_v we_o shall_v not_o only_o avoid_v evil_a thought_n but_o in_o time_n arrive_v at_o a_o happy_a temper_n and_o habit_n of_o good_a thought_n which_o be_v one_o of_o the_o most_o desirable_a thing_n in_o the_o world_n and_o most_o of_o all_o prepare_v the_o soul_n for_o the_o purity_n and_o ravishment_n of_o the_o contemplation_n of_o god_n and_o the_o joy_n of_o heaven_n let_v we_o therefore_o always_o improve_v every_o good_a thought_n or_o motion_n that_o come_v into_o our_o mind_n and_o entertain_v it_o as_o a_o embassy_n from_o god_n as_o a_o spark_n of_o the_o celestial_a fire_n and_o let_v we_o diligent_o attend_v and_o listen_v to_o the_o counsel_n and_o monition_n of_o our_o own_o conscience_n by_o no_o mean_n resist_v their_o check_n or_o stifle_v their_o advertisment_n to_o draw_v to_o a_o conclusion_n of_o this_o chapter_n if_o we_o will_v attain_v to_o this_o great_a thing_n viz._n the_o due_a government_n of_o our_o thought_n let_v we_o business_n let_v we_o make_v use_n of_o god_n wonderful_a work_n both_o of_o mercy_n and_o judgement_n which_o at_o any_o time_n occur_v in_o the_o world_n season_v our_o heart_n with_o a_o holy_a meditation_n of_o they_o there_o be_v a_o great_a many_o more_o excellent_a rule_n in_o order_n to_o the_o well-governing_a our_o thought_n as_o apply_v ourselves_o to_o our_o proper_a teacher_n and_o spiritual_a guide_n for_o comfort_n and_o assistance_n when_o our_o heart_n be_v oppress_v with_o wicked_a thought_n or_o prevail_a corruption_n avoid_v unwarrantable_a curiosity_n and_o pry_v into_o hide_a mystery_n and_o unnecessary_a speculation_n contentment_n temperance_n humility_n trust_v and_o affiance_n in_o god_n and_o abundance_n more_o which_o be_v in_o that_o large_a field_n of_o discourse_n which_o such_o a_o subject_a as_o this_o afford_v and_o which_o if_o i_o shall_v enlarge_v upon_o as_o i_o have_v do_v on_o the_o former_a head_n will_v swell_v this_o treatise_n into_o a_o much_o big_a book_n than_o i_o design_v it_o i_o shall_v therefore_o content_v myself_o and_o the_o reader_n with_o these_o principal_a rule_n and_o direction_n for_o the_o well-governing_a of_o the_o thought_n in_o general_a which_o have_v be_v treat_v of_o in_o the_o foregoing_a page_n which_o well_o put_v in_o practice_n will_n i_o doubt_v not_o by_o the_o blessing_n of_o almighty_a god_n prove_v in_o a_o great_a measure_n effectual_a to_o the_o end_n design_v and_o that_o if_o we_o not_o slight_o and_o indifferent_o but_o close_o and_o in_o earnest_n apply_v ourselves_o to_o they_o we_o shall_v thereby_o prevent_v evil_a thought_n and_o attain_v that_o happy_a and_o desirable_a government_n over_o ourselves_o which_o either_o sloth_n or_o ignorance_n make_v some_o man_n think_v to_o be_v eutopian_a and_o impossible_a only_o add_v this_o one_o particular_a more_o which_o must_v by_o no_o mean_n be_v pass_v over_o and_o that_o be_v the_o deep_a and_o serious_a consideration_n of_o the_o last_o dreadful_a judgement_n consider_v serious_o with_o yourselves_o then_o that_o there_o be_v a_o day_n a_o come_n when_o not_o only_o all_o the_o action_n and_o more_o know_v passage_n of_o our_o life_n but_o even_o our_o most_o private_a and_o retire_a thought_n shall_v be_v account_v for_o when_o god_n shall_v judge_v the_o secret_n of_o man_n by_o christ_n jesus_n 16._o though_o man_n can_v see_v our_o thought_n yet_o a_o all-knowing_a god_n can_v and_o do_v and_o will_v assure_o judge_v we_o for_o they_o in_o that_o day_n when_o these_o that_o have_v labour_v to_o approve_v be_v lay_v open_a and_o expose_v to_o the_o shame_n of_o all_o the_o world_n and_o they_o banish_v from_o the_o presence_n of_o
the_o best_a of_o man_n be_v not_o above_o that_o advice_n 1_o cor._n 10._o 12._o wherefore_o let_v he_o that_o think_v he_o stand_v take_v heed_n lest_o he_o fall_v if_o we_o do_v not_o keep_v a_o strict_a watch_n and_o a_o careful_a hand_n over_o our_o thought_n they_o will_v inevitable_o betray_v we_o when_o a_o opportunity_n serve_v and_o make_v most_o furious_a assault_n upon_o we_o when_o we_o be_v least_o aware_a of_o it_o we_o can_v no_o more_o restrain_v they_o when_o we_o please_v whatever_o we_o think_v we_o can_v no_o more_o stop_v they_o from_o break_v out_o than_o we_o can_v smother_v a_o rage_a flame_n or_o chain_v a_o foam_a billow_n and_o therefore_o whosoever_o he_o be_v that_o allow_v his_o thought_n a_o extravagant_a liberty_n he_o be_v much_o mistake_v if_o he_o think_v that_o he_o be_v sure_a to_o stop_v there_o but_o admit_v that_o he_o can_v can_v it_o be_v think_v by_o any_o rational_a creature_n that_o god_n do_v not_o take_v any_o notice_n of_o his_o thought_n themselves_o suppose_v it_o be_v in_o the_o power_n of_o any_o person_n to_o act_v contrary_a to_o his_o habit_n of_o think_v and_o to_o avoid_v the_o practice_n of_o these_o sin_n which_o he_o indulge_v himself_o in_o the_o speculation_n of_o have_v a_o omniscient_a and_o a_o holy_a god_n think_v you_o no_o regard_n to_o the_o thought_n and_o the_o inward_a temper_n and_o disposition_n of_o the_o soul_n if_o we_o think_v so_o than_o we_o have_v mean_a thought_n of_o he_o indeed_o and_o make_v religion_n degenerate_a into_o the_o service_n of_o brute_n beast_n for_o wherein_o do_v man_n differ_v from_o they_o but_o in_o his_o reason_n and_o thought_n and_o that_o he_o be_v capable_a of_o know_v god_n of_o be_v ravish_v with_o his_o excellency_n and_o perfection_n and_o encourage_v by_o his_o suitable_a reward_n and_o take_v delight_n in_o the_o glorious_a communication_n of_o himself_o to_o his_o soul_n and_o serve_v he_o with_o his_o whole_a heart_n and_o be_v unite_v to_o he_o by_o a_o life_n of_o thought_n upon_o which_o consideration_n it_o must_v needs_o follow_v that_o the_o great_a god_n be_v so_o far_o from_o disregard_v our_o thought_n that_o he_o have_v a_o principal_a respect_n to_o they_o and_o though_o it_o shall_v chance_v that_o they_o shall_v never_o break_v out_o into_o action_n and_o gross_a practice_n yet_o god_n look_v to_o the_o inward_a part_n be_v a_o narrow_a observer_n and_o searcher_n of_o the_o thought_n be_v please_v when_o his_o throne_n be_v establish_v in_o the_o soul_n and_o his_o dominion_n and_o empire_n over_o all_o its_o thought_n and_o imagination_n and_o abhor_v and_o abandon_v a_o unclean_a wicked_a or_o rebellious_a heart_n to_o he_o all_o the_o pomp_n of_o religion_n and_o splendour_n of_o outward_a performance_n be_v without_o it_o detestable_a 11._o the_o soul_n be_v the_o seat_n of_o religion_n as_o for_o the_o part_n and_o member_n of_o our_o body_n they_o be_v entire_o at_o the_o command_n of_o the_o mind_n the_o understanding_n and_o will_n be_v their_o despotic_a ruler_n and_o as_o the_o heart_n and_o the_o thought_n be_v dispose_v so_o be_v the_o practice_n and_o conversation_n and_o therefore_o they_o the_o almighty_a principal_o regard_v as_o a_o man_n can_v never_o testify_v the_o truth_n of_o his_o love_n to_o god_n or_o evidence_n the_o sincerity_n of_o his_o soul_n without_o have_v a_o special_a regard_n to_o the_o well_o govern_v of_o his_o thought_n so_o without_o it_o damnation_n may_v just_o be_v his_o portion_n though_o the_o plague_n break_v not_o out_o in_o the_o botch_n and_o ulcer_n of_o a_o profligate_n conversation_n though_o the_o pollution_n be_v conceal_v and_o hide_a indeed_o if_o we_o be_v so_o profane_a as_o to_o think_v of_o god_n as_o a_o man_n and_o esteem_v he_o to_o be_v such_o a_o one_o as_o ourselves_o if_o his_o eye_n can_v not_o penetrate_v any_o deep_a than_o we_o but_o be_v fallible_a and_o weak_a if_o he_o can_v not_o see_v into_o our_o breast_n and_o discover_v the_o secret_n of_o our_o heart_n then_o there_o may_v be_v some_o reason_n for_o we_o to_o imagine_v that_o he_o do_v not_o regard_v our_o thought_n so_o our_o visible_a behaviour_n be_v smooth_a and_o untainted_a but_o since_o he_o be_v a_o all-seeing_a and_o a_o all-knowing_a god_n and_o profess_o declare_v himself_o such_o in_o the_o sacred_a scripture_n 139._o the_o reason_n of_o man_n can_v submit_v to_o such_o a_o idle_a fancy_n as_o this_o viz._n that_o he_o have_v no_o respect_n to_o a_o man_n thought_n but_o on_o the_o contrary_a must_v believe_v that_o he_o have_v a_o especial_a eye_n to_o they_o and_o will_v assure_o call_v we_o to_o a_o account_n for_o they_o at_o the_o day_n of_o judgement_n for_o though_o our_o saviour_n discourse_n mat._n 12._o 36._o extend_v only_o to_o every_o idle_a word_n yet_o in_o the_o very_a verse_n before_o he_o show_v that_o the_o heart_n be_v principal_o regard_v and_o therefore_o to_o be_v careless_a of_o his_o heart_n shall_v be_v otherwise_o of_o his_o life_n or_o how_o he_o that_o be_v vain_a filthy_a or_o any_o way_n vicious_a in_o his_o imagination_n can_v be_v pure_a and_o holy_a sober_a and_o religious_a in_o his_o conversation_n and_o practice_n upon_o both_o which_o account_n we_o see_v the_o vast_a advantage_n that_o we_o shall_v iufallible_o reap_v by_o be_v diligent_a and_o careful_a in_o the_o well-governing_a of_o our_o thought_n but_o three_o that_o which_o will_v serve_v to_o make_v we_o further_o sensible_a of_o the_o great_a advantage_n of_o well-governing_a our_o thought_n be_v this_o viz._n that_o we_o shall_v ever_o be_v in_o a_o preparation_n for_o the_o best_a and_o most_o weighty_a duty_n by_o this_o mean_n we_o shall_v not_o only_o be_v able_a to_o resist_v and_o repel_v the_o fury_n of_o temptation_n but_o be_v ready_a for_o the_o performance_n of_o every_o duty_n these_o man_n that_o have_v not_o inure_v themselves_o to_o a_o habit_n of_o thought_n and_o constant_o exercise_v a_o strict_a regimen_n over_o the_o motion_n of_o their_o own_o heart_n will_v require_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o time_n to_o recollect_v and_o order_v their_o thought_n and_o reduce_v they_o into_o a_o proper_a frame_n and_o posture_n these_o that_o careless_o give_v their_o mind_n a_o loose_a as_o soon_o as_o any_o solemn_a and_o weighty_a duty_n be_v over_o and_o suffer_v their_o thought_n to_o return_v to_o the_o old_a subject_n of_o the_o world_n or_o any_o other_o of_o their_o vanity_n the_o same_o difficulty_n will_v attend_v they_o to_o bring_v their_o thought_n into_o a_o due_a frame_n again_o which_o do_v at_o first_o so_o that_o they_o will_v thereby_o be_v mighty_o hinder_v in_o their_o advance_n in_o religion_n their_o progress_n in_o holiness_n will_v be_v much_o retard_v they_o labour_v in_o a_o circle_n or_o at_o best_o they_o will_v move_v but_o slow_o on_o in_o the_o way_n to_o heaven_n in_o comparison_n of_o these_o that_o keep_v a_o constant_a and_o strict_a government_n over_o their_o thought_n these_o latter_a will_v be_v able_a always_o to_o say_v with_o the_o psalmist_n o_o god_n my_o heart_n be_v ready_a 1._o my_o heart_n be_v ready_a and_o what_o a_o happy_a and_o desirable_a temper_n of_o soul_n be_v this_o what_o spiritual_a comfort_n and_o benefit_n do_v these_o enjoy_v which_o other_o for_o want_n of_o a_o due_a care_n and_o watchfulness_n deprive_v themselves_o of_o these_o only_a want_n
must_v be_v careful_a that_o we_o do_v not_o love_v the_o world_n immoderate_o for_o how_o remote_a soever_o covetousness_n may_v seem_v from_o despair_n the_o former_a do_v frequent_o conduce_v to_o the_o latter_a he_o that_o set_v too_o great_a a_o value_n upon_o the_o thing_n of_o this_o world_n and_o a_o temporal_a prosperity_n will_v not_o only_o be_v great_o hinder_v from_o do_v his_o spiritual_a duty_n but_o when_o it_o please_v god_n to_o deprive_v he_o of_o his_o prosperity_n he_o be_v very_o apt_a to_o be_v extreme_o disquiet_v and_o repine_v and_o sometime_o to_o look_v upon_o himself_o as_o utter_o forsake_v of_o god_n because_o he_o be_v stripe_v of_o these_o outward_a thing_n he_o mistaken_o look_v upon_o temporal_a good_a thing_n to_o be_v certain_a mark_n of_o god_n favour_n whereas_o in_o truth_n they_o be_v not_o but_o he_o sometime_o deal_v they_o promiscuous_o 73._o as_o the_o rain_n descend_v both_o upon_o the_o just_a and_o the_o unjust_a and_o what_o be_v the_o likely_a consequence_n of_o such_o a_o enormous_a love_n of_o the_o world_n if_o i_o say_v it_o shall_v please_v god_n to_o bring_v such_o a_o one_o into_o adversity_n but_o that_o he_o shall_v into_o desperation_n the_o last_o remedy_n against_o black_a dreadful_a or_o despair_a thought_n be_v religiws_n and_o cheerful_a conversation_n it_o be_v not_o jolly_a vain_a company_n that_o will_v be_v of_o no_o use_n but_o hurt_n but_o godly_a and_o cheerful_a society_n will_v very_o much_o contribute_v to_o their_o cure_n to_o be_v always_o pore_v aggravate_v the_o malady_n and_o rivet_n the_o despair_n and_o sometime_o prove_v fatal_a indeed_o and_o therefore_o a_o little_a good_a conversation_n be_v very_o necessary_a religious_a discourse_n and_o conference_n will_v keep_v out_o worse_a thought_n and_o conduce_v very_o much_o to_o make_v we_o rejoice_v with_o they_o that_o do_v rejoice_v there_o be_v a_o kind_n of_o melody_n in_o they_o which_o like_o that_o of_o david_n harp_n 23._o when_o he_o play_v to_o saul_n will_v drive_v away_o the_o evil_a spirit_n it_o be_v a_o common_a thing_n for_o such_o person_n as_o be_v trouble_v with_o this_o kind_n of_o thought_n with_o continuance_n and_o this_o be_v a_o proper_a way_n in_o time_n to_o be_v rid_v of_o such_o evil_a thought_n for_o the_o devil_n temptation_n and_o injection_n especial_o of_o this_o kind_n be_v usual_o more_o prevalent_a and_o come_v with_o great_a force_n when_o people_n be_v alone_o than_o when_o they_o be_v in_o society_n and_o then_o too_o they_o be_v apt_a to_o dote_v upon_o their_o own_o notion_n of_o thing_n hug_v their_o mistake_n and_o think_v they_o true_a however_o false_a and_o erroneous_a they_o may_v be_v a_o religious_a and_o cheerful_a friend_n therefore_o i_o take_v in_o this_o case_n to_o be_v of_o great_a advantage_n to_o comfort_v advise_v divert_v and_o improve_v they_o in_o better_a thing_n and_o more_o especial_o do_v i_o recommend_v the_o frequent_a conversation_n of_o their_o spiritual_a guide_n for_o it_o be_v not_o to_o be_v imagine_v what_o efficacy_n a_o seasonable_a word_n have_v sometime_o and_o what_o a_o sweet_a alteration_n it_o cause_v hardly_o ever_o to_o be_v cure_v it_o be_v religion_n must_v give_v a_o man_n a_o rational_a and_o a_o well-grounded_n hope_v of_o the_o security_n of_o his_o eternal_a condition_n hereafter_o without_o which_o it_o be_v difficult_a to_o imagine_v how_o his_o heart_n shall_v ever_o be_v easy_a and_o his_o thought_n serene_a quiet_a and_o compose_v and_o therefore_o he_o that_o will_v avoid_v this_o kind_n of_o evil_a thought_n i_o exhort_v and_o advise_v he_o first_o to_o fix_v the_o grand_a point_n of_o religion_n in_o himself_o and_o then_o to_o cherish_v and_o improve_v it_o by_o cheerful_a and_o religious_a conversation_n but_o in_o do_v this_o we_o must_v not_o think_v that_o we_o can_v be_v always_o employ_v in_o religion_n that_o we_o can_v have_v our_o thought_n stretch_v up_o always_o to_o such_o a_o pitch_n to_o be_v continual_o engage_v in_o the_o duty_n of_o devotion_n and_o be_v think_v that_o we_o can_v please_v god_n without_o it_o for_o we_o have_v body_n as_o well_o as_o soul_n we_o be_v man_n and_o not_o angel_n and_o therefore_o though_o we_o shall_v do_v our_o utmost_a and_o with_o all_o imaginable_a sincecerity_n yet_o we_o shall_v not_o lay_v too_o great_a a_o load_n upon_o our_o spirit_n for_o that_o may_v be_v the_o way_n instead_o of_o prevent_v to_o bring_v on_o sad_a and_o melancholy_a thought_n and_o it_o be_v what_o almighty_a god_n no_o where_o require_v of_o we_o 6._o who_o will_v have_v mercy_n and_o not_o sacrifice_v and_o intend_v his_o service_n for_o perfect_a freedom_n and_o religion_n for_o a_o law_n of_o liberty_n 25._o i_o have_v now_o do_v with_o this_o last_o kind_n of_o evil_a thought_n viz._n sad_a melancholy_a or_o despair_a thought_n and_o the_o rule_n which_o have_v be_v lay_v down_o for_o the_o well-governing_a the_o thought_n in_o general_a and_o for_o the_o avoid_v this_o sort_n and_o these_o other_o kind_n of_o evil_a thought_n discourse_v of_o in_o this_o treatise_n due_o observe_v will_v by_o god_n blessing_n have_v some_o good_a effect_n but_o as_o a_o appendix_n to_o this_o chapter_n i_o shall_v endeavour_v to_o explain_v to_o you_o what_o be_v the_o sin_n against_o the_o holy-ghost_n because_o the_o fear_n that_o they_o have_v commit_v this_o unpardonable_a sin_n have_v horrible_o perplex_v and_o terrify_v the_o thought_n of_o many_o deject_a christian_n even_o almost_o to_o desperation_n now_o every_o sin_n be_v indeed_o a_o sin_n against_o the_o holy-ghost_n and_o some_o be_v grievance_n of_o he_o and_o therefore_o we_o be_v exhort_v not_o to_o grieve_v
