scripture_n which_o many_o time_n term_v persecution_n and_o affliction_n by_o the_o name_n of_o a_o fiery_a furnace_n after_o which_o sort_n saint_n peter_n himself_o afore_o in_o the_o first_o chapter_n of_o this_o his_o first_o epistle_n have_v these_o word_n that_o the_o trial_n of_o your_o faith_n be_v much_o more_o precious_a than_o gold_n that_o perish_v though_o it_o be_v try_v with_o fire_n may_v be_v find_v unto_o your_o praise_n honour_n and_o glory_n at_o the_o appear_v of_o jesus_n christ_n likewise_o we_o read_v in_o the_o prophet_n esaie_n chap._n xlviij_o that_o the_o this_o holiness_n of_o thyself_o or_o by_o thy_o own_o merit_n but_o that_o thou_o be_v therefore_o holy_a for_o that_o thou_o haste_v the_o word_n of_o god_n for_o that_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n be_v thou_o and_o for_o that_o thou_o be_v become_v entire_o righteous_a and_o holy_a through_o christ_n these_o thing_n must_v thou_o confess_v if_o thou_o will_v be_v a_o christian_n for_o this_o be_v extreme_a ignominy_n &_o blasphemy_n to_o the_o name_n of_o christ_n if_o we_o shall_v so_o deny_v this_o honour_n to_o his_o blood_n as_o not_o to_o believe_v that_o by_o it_o only_o our_o sin_n be_v clean_o wash_v away_o and_o we_o sanctify_v thou_o must_v believe_v therefore_o and_o confess_v that_o thou_o be_v holy_a yet_o by_o the_o blood_n of_o christ_n not_o by_o thy_o own_o righteousness_n and_o this_o thou_o must_v do_v with_o such_o certainty_n and_o constancy_n that_o in_o this_o cause_n thou_o may_v not_o stick_v if_o need_v be_v to_o spend_v even_o thy_o life_n and_o bold_o to_o abide_v and_o look_v for_o whatsoever_o may_v hereupon_o come_v unto_o thou_o through_o obedience_n and_o sprinkling_a of_o the_o blood_n of_o jesus_n christ_n after_o this_o sort_n say_v the_o apostle_n come_v it_o to_o pass_v that_o we_o be_v holy_a when_o we_o believe_v and_o obey_v the_o word_n of_o christ_n and_o be_v sprinkle_v with_o his_o blood_n and_o here_o saint_n peter_n have_v use_v somewhat_o a_o other_o manner_n of_o speech_n than_o saint_n paul_n yet_o be_v it_o in_o effect_n as_o much_o as_o when_o s._n paul_n say_v we_o be_v save_v through_o faith_n in_o christ_n because_o it_o be_v faith_n which_o make_v that_o we_o be_v attentive_a and_o obediente_a to_o christ_n and_o his_o holy_a worde_n wherefore_o to_o obey_v the_o word_n of_o god_n be_v as_o much_o as_o to_o be_v subject_a to_o christ_n to_o be_v sprinkle_v with_o his_o blood_n and_o to_o believe_v for_o it_o be_v very_o grievous_a to_o nature_n to_o be_v so_o whole_o subject_v to_o christ_n as_o altogether_o to_o forslow_v and_o cease_v from_o our_o own_o matter_n altogether_o to_o neglect_v our_o own_o cause_n and_o to_o count_v all_o that_o we_o do_v to_o be_v sin_n nature_n therefore_o stout_o resist_v and_o strive_v against_o this_o doctrine_n and_o yet_o nevertheless_o it_o must_v at_o the_o last_o stoop_v and_o yield_v itself_o thereunto_o of_o sprinkling_a we_o read_v in_o the_o 51._o psalm_n sprinkle_v i_o with_o hyssop_n o_o lord_n and_o i_o be_v clean_a he_o allude_v to_o the_o law_n of_o moses_n from_o whence_o saint_n peter_n take_v this_o kind_n of_o speech_n thereby_o to_o revele_v moses_n unto_o we_o and_o as_o it_o be_v to_o bring_v we_o into_o the_o king_n highwaie_o of_o right_o understand_v the_o scripture_n for_o when_o moses_n have_v build_v the_o tabernacle_n he_o take_v the_o blood_n of_o goat_n and_o therewith_o sprinkle_v both_o the_o tabernacle_n and_o all_o the_o people_n now_o this_o sprinkling_a do_v not_o inwardlie_o sanctify_v in_o spirit_n but_o only_o outward_o and_o in_o external_a thing_n and_o therefore_o be_v there_o need_v of_o a_o spiritual_a cleansing_n forasmuch_o as_o that_o sanctification_n be_v outward_a and_o carnal_a whereof_o there_o be_v no_o regard_n before_o god_n yet_o do_v god_n thereby_o as_o it_o be_v by_o a_o type_n or_o figure_n signify_v this_o spiritual_a sanctification_n intercessor_n with_o god_n hereupon_o we_o have_v run_v to_o the_o holy_a virgin_n marie_n and_o have_v make_v she_o our_o mediator_n leave_v christ_n in_o the_o mean_a season_n as_o a_o angry_a judge_n so_o do_v not_o the_o scripture_n it_o come_v and_o approach_v near_a it_o give_v this_o glory_n to_o christ_n our_o lord_n that_o he_o be_v our_o only_a mediator_n by_o who_o alone_o we_o we_o be_v the_o son_n of_o adam_n namely_o we_o be_v translate_v from_o the_o inheritance_n of_o adam_n to_o the_o inheritance_n of_o god_n that_o he_o may_v be_v our_o father_n and_o we_o his_o child_n and_o therein_o his_o heir_n even_o of_o all_o good_a thing_n that_o he_o have_v see_v what_o excellent_a thing_n be_v in_o the_o scripture_n handle_v concern_v this_o matter_n now_o inasmuche_o as_o we_o be_v regenerate_v and_o the_o son_n and_o heir_n of_o god_n we_o be_v equal_a in_o dignity_n and_o honour_n with_o saint_n paul_n saint_n peter_n the_o holy_a virgin_n marie_n and_o all_o the_o saint_n for_o we_o have_v the_o same_o treasure_n from_o god_n and_o all_o good_a thing_n as_o large_o as_o they_o they_o be_v not_o otherwise_o regenerate_v than_o we_o wherefore_o they_o have_v no_o more_o than_o all_o other_o christian_n unto_o a_o lively_a hope_n our_o life_n here_o upon_o the_o earth_n be_v for_o none_o other_o cause_n but_o that_o we_o shall_v help_v other_o otherwise_o it_o be_v best_o that_o god_n shall_v even_o straight_o after_o our_o baptism_n and_o the_o receive_n of_o faith_n end_v our_o day_n and_o suffer_v we_o to_o die_v howbeit_o he_o permit_v we_o to_o live_v here_o to_o this_o end_n that_o we_o may_v bring_v other_o also_o unto_o the_o faith_n which_o he_o himself_o have_v do_z to_o we_o before_o now_o while_o we_o live_v here_o on_o the_o earth_n we_o live_v in_o hope_n for_o albeit_o we_o be_v certain_a that_o through_o faith_n we_o have_v all_o the_o good_a thing_n of_o god_n for_o faith_n as_o it_o assure_o bring_v with_o it_o regeneration_n so_o do_v it_o bring_v also_o adoption_n and_o inheritance_n howbeit_o we_o see_v not_o this_o as_o yet_o and_o therefore_o do_v it_o as_o yet_o consist_v in_o hope_n be_v somewhat_o remove_v from_o our_o sight_n that_o we_o can_v not_o see_v and_o behold_v it_o now_o this_o the_o apostle_n call_v the_o hope_n of_o life_n which_o be_v a_o hebrew_n kind_n of_o speech_n as_o be_v this_o the_o man_n of_o sin_n we_o call_v that_o a_o lively_a hope_n whereby_o we_o certain_o hope_v &_o assure_o look_v for_o eternal_a life_n which_o be_v now_o hide_v as_o it_o be_v with_o a_o veil_n that_o it_o can_v not_o be_v see_v neither_o be_v it_o present_o perceive_v but_o in_o the_o heart_n through_o faith_n as_o john_n in_o his_o first_o epistle_n chap._n 3._o write_v as_o he_o be_v because_o the_o life_n present_a and_o the_o life_n to_o come_v can_v not_o be_v together_o neither_o can_v it_o be_v that_o we_o shall_v eat_v drink_n sleep_n watch_n and_o do_v other_o work_n of_o nature_n which_o this_o life_n bring_v with_o it_o and_o be_v therewith_o also_o bless_v therefore_o can_v we_o not_o attain_v unto_o this_o to_o live_v for_o ever_o unless_o we_o first_o die_v and_o forgo_v this_o present_a life_n wherefore_o while_o we_o here_o live_v we_o must_v still_o stand_v in_o hope_n until_o it_o please_v god_n to_o call_v we_o hence_o to_o behold_v and_o see_v those_o good_a thing_n which_o we_o now_o hope_v after_o and_o how_o may_v we_o come_v unto_o this_o lively_a hope_n by_o the_o resurrection_n say_v the_o apostle_n of_o jesus_n christ_n from_o the_o dead_a i_o have_v oftentimes_o say_v that_o none_o can_v right_o believe_v in_o god_n and_o come_v unto_o he_o without_o a_o mean_a for_o asmuch_o as_o we_o be_v all_o the_o child_n of_o wrath_n and_o of_o ourselves_o can_v do_v nothing_o that_o be_v acceptable_a before_o god_n we_o have_v therefore_o need_v of_o a_o other_o by_o who_o we_o may_v appear_v before_o he_o who_o may_v make_v intercession_n for_o we_o and_o reconcile_v we_o unto_o he_o now_o there_o be_v none_o other_o mediator_n than_o the_o lord_n christ_n who_o be_v the_o son_n of_o god_n it_o be_v therefore_o we_o live_v here_o on_o the_o earth_n yet_o no_o otherwise_o then_o by_o the_o resurrection_n of_o christ_n that_o be_v to_o say_v even_o therefore_o because_o he_o be_v rise_v again_o ascend_v into_o faith_n and_o those_o book_n of_o all_o other_o be_v the_o best_a and_o the_o excellent_a which_o teach_v and_o treat_v upon_o this_o point_n principal_o and_o chief_o as_o before_o have_v be_v declare_v this_o article_n of_o our_o faith_n be_v of_o most_o weighty_a importance_n for_o if_o christ_n have_v not_o rise_v again_o all_o our_o comfort_n and_o hope_n be_v in_o vain_a and_o all_o inheritance_n immortal_a and_o undefiled_a and_o that_o fade_v not_o away_o we_o hope_v not_o for_o such_o a_o substance_n and_o inheritance_n as_o be_v not_o present_a but_o we_o live_v in_o hope_n of_o a_o inheritance_n which_o be_v present_a in_o deed_n and_o be_v immortal_a be_v also_o undefiled_a and_o fade_v not_o away_o this_o inheritance_n we_o have_v perpetual_o and_o without_o end_n howbeit_o we_o do_v not_o as_o yet_o â—ee_o the_o same_o these_o be_v word_n forcible_a and_o of_o wonderful_a efficacy_n and_o he_o in_o who_o mind_n they_o be_v firm_o fix_v will_v be_v as_o i_o think_v little_o move_v with_o desire_n of_o riches_n and_o pleasure_n of_o this_o world_n for_o how_o can_v it_o be_v that_o one_o shall_v so_o set_v his_o mind_n upon_o these_o transitory_a riches_n and_o delight_n if_o he_o believe_v those_o thing_n which_o be_v here_o speak_v for_o when_o worldly_a wealth_n and_o terrene_a treasure_n be_v compare_v to_o these_o thing_n it_o appear_v straight_o how_o those_o thing_n of_o the_o world_n endure_v but_o a_o small_a time_n and_o do_v soon_o pass_v away_o but_o these_o thing_n continue_v for_o ever_o and_o do_v never_o fail_v nor_o fade_v moreover_o all_o the_o thing_n of_o the_o world_n be_v unpure_a and_o do_v defile_v we_o for_o there_o be_v no_o man_n here_o so_o godly_a but_o in_o one_o respect_n or_o other_o he_o be_v carry_v away_o and_o defile_v with_o the_o vanity_n and_o pleasant_a thing_n of_o this_o life_n but_o this_o inheritance_n be_v undefiled_a and_o pure_a and_o he_o that_o possess_v the_o same_o remain_v for_o ever_o immaculate_a final_o this_o inheritance_n do_v not_o fade_v do_v not_o decay_n neither_o be_v ever_o subject_a to_o any_o corruption_n but_o every_o yearthly_a thing_n although_o it_o be_v as_o hard_o as_o iron_n and_o stone_n be_v nevertheless_o change_v and_o continue_v not_o still_o as_o soon_o as_o man_n also_o become_v old_a his_o beauty_n be_v go_v and_o he_o become_v loathsome_a and_o unamiable_a howbeit_o this_o inheritance_n be_v far_o from_o mutation_n or_o change_n it_o always_o remain_v it_o be_v always_o fresh_a and_o flourish_v there_o be_v no_o pleasure_n so_o great_a on_o the_o earth_n which_o will_v not_o by_o continuance_n become_v loathsome_a and_o tedious_a as_o we_o see_v there_o be_v at_o the_o last_o a_o tediousness_n in_o all_o thing_n but_o our_o good_a thing_n here_o speak_v of_o be_v otherwise_o whereof_o there_o be_v not_o satiety_n for_o ever_o all_o which_o we_o obtain_v in_o christ_n through_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n when_o we_o firm_o believe_v that_o they_o be_v free_o give_v unto_o us._n for_o how_o shall_v we_o miserable_a man_n by_o our_o own_o work_n merit_v those_o so_o great_a good_a thing_n which_o no_o reason_n or_o understanding_n of_o man_n be_v able_a so_o much_o as_o to_o comprehend_v or_o by_o imagination_n of_o heart_n once_o to_o conceive_v reserve_v in_o heaven_n for_o you_o this_o inheritance_n immortal_a undefiled_a and_o that_o fade_v not_o away_o be_v undoubted_o we_o it_o be_v only_o for_o a_o little_a while_n remove_v and_o keep_v from_o our_o sight_n until_o these_o eye_n be_v close_v up_o and_o this_o mortal_a life_n end_v then_o shall_v we_o certain_o find_v and_o see_v the_o same_o unless_o we_o be_v unbelieve_v and_o because_o we_o shall_v not_o doubt_n of_o the_o certainty_n without_o the_o especial_a assistance_n of_o god_n spirit_n how_o then_o shall_v we_o by_o our_o own_o strength_n arrogate_v that_o which_o of_o all_o other_o be_v most_o excellent_a namely_o to_o believe_v these_o cogitation_n therefore_o be_v a_o mere_a dream_n
and_o thing_n vain_a and_o fond_a god_n power_n must_v be_v present_a to_o work_v in_o we_o as_o saint_n paul_n write_v ephes_n 1.17_o god_n give_v unto_o you_o the_o spirit_n of_o wisdom_n that_o you_o may_v know_v what_o be_v the_o excead_v greatness_n of_o his_o power_n to_o we_o ward_v which_o believe_v accord_v to_o the_o work_n of_o his_o mighty_a power_n etc._n etc._n for_o it_o be_v make_v faith_n in_o one_o than_o it_o be_v to_o create_v again_o heaven_n and_o earth_n we_o may_v evident_o perceive_v therefore_o that_o they_o little_o know_v what_o they_o say_v which_o use_v such_o word_n as_o these_o how_o can_v only_a faith_n do_v all_o see_v many_o believe_v which_o do_v no_o good_a work_v at_o all_o for_o they_o think_v their_o own_o imagination_n to_o be_v faith_n and_o that_o faith_n also_o may_v be_v without_o good_a work_v but_o we_o say_v with_o saint_n peter_n that_o faith_n be_v the_o power_n of_o god_n in_o who_o soever_o god_n woork_v thus_o the_o that_o pertain_v to_o salvation_n be_v now_o able_a to_o judge_v and_o free_o pronounce_v of_o all_o thing_n which_o be_v in_o the_o earth_n as_o for_o example_n this_o doctrine_n be_v sincere_a and_o sound_n that_o be_v corrupt_a and_o false_a this_o life_n be_v good_a that_o be_v evil_a this_o be_v well_o do_v that_o otherwise_o and_o what_o soever_o such_o a_o man_n do_v define_v and_o determine_v be_v so_o in_o deed_n for_o he_o can_v not_o be_v deceive_v but_o be_v preserve_v and_o keep_v by_o the_o power_n of_o god_n &_o remain_v judge_v of_o all_o doctrine_n contrariwise_o where_o faith_n and_o the_o power_n of_o god_n be_v not_o there_o be_v nothing_o but_o error_n and_o blindness_n there_o reason_n be_v carry_v away_o hither_o and_o thither_o from_o one_o work_n to_o a_o other_o in_o asmuch_o as_o it_o strive_v by_o she_o own_o work_v to_o come_v unto_o heaven_n and_o therefore_o always_o think_v behold_v this_o will_v bring_v i_o to_o heaven_n let_v i_o work_v this_o and_o i_o shall_v be_v partaker_n of_o eternal_a felicity_n and_o blessedness_n hereupon_o have_v overspread_v the_o world_n such_o rabble_n and_n swarm_n of_o monastery_n altar_n sacrifice_a priest_n monk_n friar_n and_o votary_n into_o such_o great_a blindness_n do_v god_n suffer_v they_o to_o fall_v which_o do_v not_o believe_v but_o to_o we_o that_o believe_v he_o preserve_v and_o now_o it_o be_v hide_v it_o be_v as_o yet_o cover_v and_o as_o it_o be_v close_v and_o seal_v up_o but_o after_o a_o while_o it_o shall_v in_o a_o moment_n be_v open_v and_o reveil_v that_o we_o may_v plain_o see_v it_o wherein_o you_o rejoice_v though_o now_o for_o a_o season_n if_o need_v require_v you_o be_v in_o heaviness_n through_o manifold_a tentation_n if_o thou_o be_v a_o christian_n and_o look_v for_o this_o inheritance_n or_o salvation_n thou_o must_v needs_o whole_o depend_v upon_o it_o and_o utter_o conteinne_v all_o earthly_a thing_n thou_o must_v also_o confess_v and_o open_o affirm_v that_o all_o the_o understanding_n wisdom_n &_o holiness_n of_o this_o world_n be_v altogether_o nothing_o wherefore_o thou_o must_v look_v for_o no_o other_o but_o that_o the_o world_n will_v condemn_v and_o persecute_v thou_o and_o therefore_o have_v saint_n peter_n right_o join_v together_o these_o three_o faith_n hope_n and_o the_o cross_n or_o affliction_n for_o asmuch_o as_o be_v know_v from_o that_o which_o be_v false_a and_o counterfeit_a and_o
to_o require_v he_o appoint_v no_o certain_a time_n as_o the_o pope_n have_v do_z how_o long_o we_o must_v fast_a but_o leave_v it_o to_o every_o one_o judgement_n so_o to_o fast_o that_o he_o be_v always_o sober_a that_o he_o do_v not_o so_o surcharge_n his_o body_n with_o overmuche_o eat_v and_o drink_v but_o that_o he_o may_v have_v the_o perfect_a use_n of_o reason_n and_o know_v how_o to_o use_v his_o sense_n aright_o and_o how_o to_o live_v profitable_o and_o beneficial_o to_o other_o in_o his_o vocation_n for_o it_o be_v a_o very_a preposterous_a absurd_a and_o unprofitable_a thing_n to_o give_v a_o general_a precept_n hereof_o unto_o the_o whole_a people_n or_o to_o the_o church_n for_o asmuch_o as_o we_o be_v unlike_a among_o ourselves_o one_o have_v a_o strong_a body_n another_o a_o weak_a so_o that_o it_o be_v needful_a for_o one_o to_o abstain_v much_o for_o a_o other_o to_o abstain_v little_a that_o the_o body_n may_v nevertheless_o remain_v in_o health_n and_o be_v fit_a to_o do_v good_a work_n again_o there_o be_v some_o that_o deal_v clean_o contrary_o and_o think_v they_o do_v very_o well_o in_o fast_v nothing_o at_o all_o suppose_n that_o they_o may_v consider_v and_o look_v into_o they_o that_o bear_v the_o name_n of_o christian_n thou_o ought_v not_o to_o make_v of_o they_o any_o respect_n or_o difference_n as_o that_o thou_o shall_v say_v this_o be_v a_o man_n and_o that_o be_v a_o woman_n this_o be_v the_o master_n and_o that_o be_v the_o servant_n this_o be_v a_o young_a man_n and_o that_o be_v a_o old_a man_n as_o saint_n paul_n say_v to_o forth_o the_o worde_n of_o god_n save_v that_o in_o the_o church_n woman_n ought_v not_o to_o speak_v but_o to_o refer_v that_o to_o man_n to_o teach_v and_o preach_v there_o because_o of_o the_o god_n he_o that_o can_v do_v this_o be_v a_o priest_n and_o whosoever_o be_v such_o upon_o they_o also_o lie_v the_o charge_n to_o preach_v the_o word_n to_o pray_v for_o the_o congregation_n and_o to_o sacrifice_v themselves_o unto_o god_n forsake_v therefore_o and_o renounce_v the_o opinion_n of_o those_o dolt_n which_o call_v the_o common_a rascal_n sort_n of_o clergy_n man_n or_o clerk_n as_o they_o term_v they_o only_a priest_n which_o kind_n of_o person_n you_o evident_o see_v to_o execute_v no_o other_o office_n but_o to_o brag_v out_o their_o lewdness_n with_o a_o shave_a crown_n his_o hair_n and_o by_o anoint_v and_o beesmear_v his_o hoof_n last_o of_o all_o saint_n peter_n wiss_v we_o to_o offer_v up_o spiritual_a sacrifice_n acceptable_a unto_o god_n by_o jesus_n christ_n now_o if_o christ_n be_v that_o corner_n stone_n upon_o who_o we_o be_v build_v it_o must_v needs_o be_v that_o all_o our_o cogitation_n to_o godward_o aught_o to_o be_v further_v administer_v and_o it_o follow_v that_o he_o must_v needs_o he_o a_o spiritual_a stone_n for_o how_o or_o why_o shall_v i_o believe_v in_o stone_n or_o wood_n again_o he_o must_v needs_o be_v the_o true_a god_n for_o because_o in_o the_o first_o commandment_n of_o the_o first_o table_n we_o be_v express_o forbid_v to_o believe_v in_o any_o other_o thing_n save_v in_o he_o see_v therefore_o that_o such_o a_o stone_n be_v couch_v and_o say_v in_o the_o foundation_n upon_o who_o we_o ought_v to_o believe_v it_o consequent_o follow_v that_o he_o the_o same_o be_v god_n again_o he_o can_v not_o only_o be_v god_n but_o he_o must_v also_o be_v man_n withal_o because_o he_o be_v to_o be_v partaker_n of_o the_o building_n and_o not_o only_a partaker_n but_o also_o the_o head_n thereof_o now_o where_o any_o house_n or_o building_n be_v set_v up_o or_o rear_v there_o it_o behoove_v that_o one_o stone_n be_v agreeable_a to_o a_o other_o that_o each_o one_o may_v frame_v and_o be_v couch_v and_o square_v in_o the_o same_o condition_n nature_n and_o form_n that_o the_o other_o stone_n be_v therefore_o see_v that_o we_o ought_v to_o be_v build_v upon_o christ_n it_o must_v needs_o be_v that_o he_o be_v like_a unto_o we_o and_o altogether_o of_o the_o same_o nature_n that_o other_o stone_n be_v of_o which_o be_v build_v and_o lay_v upon_o he_o that_o be_v to_o say_v very_o perfect_a and_o true_a man_n as_o we_o be_v after_o this_o sort_n in_o plain_a and_o common_a word_n the_o scripture_n express_v such_o high_a mystery_n and_o weighty_a matter_n to_o wit_n the_o sum_n of_o our_o faith_n and_o in_o such_o short_a and_o brief_a sentence_n comprehend_v more_o than_o by_o any_o mortal_a man_n can_v possible_o by_o utter_v what_o building_n or_o edification_n be_v we_o have_v
also_o declare_v to_o wit_n it_o be_v that_o faith_n by_o which_o we_o be_v stay_v and_o build_v upon_o christ_n repose_n our_o whole_a trust_n and_o confidence_n in_o he_o by_o which_o mean_n we_o be_v come_v like_o unto_o he_o and_o this_o must_v therefore_o so_o be_v that_o the_o whole_a divide_n may_v consist_v of_o all_o his_o part_n apt_o agre_v together_o and_o mutual_o join_v &_o frame_v one_o into_o a_o other_o for_o it_o be_v of_o necessity_n that_o all_o the_o other_o stone_n must_v be_v place_v and_o couch_v orderly_o accord_v to_o this_o first_o foundamentall_a stone_n and_o this_o be_v charity_n the_o fruit_n of_o faith_n but_o why_o do_v the_o prophet_n call_v he_o a_o fundamental_a stone_n true_o for_o none_o other_o cause_n but_o that_o as_o nothing_o can_v be_v build_v unless_o the_o foundation_n stone_n be_v first_o say_v for_o except_v all_o the_o other_o stone_n test_n and_o state_n upon_o that_o stone_n they_o can_v not_o stand_v so_o must_v we_o lean_v and_o stare_v upon_o christ_n and_o acknowledge_v he_o as_o our_o foundation_n from_o who_o de_v our_o state_n and_o buttress_n we_o receiuâ—_n all_o benefit_n for_o we_o do_v not_o support_v and_o bear_v he_o but_o he_o we_o and_o upon_o he_o lie_v sin_n death_n hell_n and_o all_o that_o we_o have_v 〈◊〉_d that_o be_v thus_o support_v by_o he_o nothing_o be_v able_a any_o whit_n to_o hurt_v us._n for_o so_o long_o as_o we_o rest_v and_o stay_v upon_o he_o as_o natural_a stone_n do_v upon_o their_o foundation_n and_o put_v our_o trust_n in_o he_o we_o must_v need_v be_v where_o he_o be_v furthermore_o the_o prophet_n also_o call_v he_o a_o corner_n stone_n the_o manner_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n be_v to_o conclude_v and_o speak_v much_o in_o few_o word_n now_o christ_n be_v the_o corner_n stone_n for_o that_o he_o conjoin_v both_o gentise_n and_o jew_n who_o afore_o be_v at_o mortal_a enemitie_n and_o of_o they_o gather_v together_o one_o church_n of_o which_o matter_n and_o argument_n saint_n paul_n write_v at_o large_a the_o jew_n glory_v much_o that_o they_o have_v the_o law_n of_o god_n vaunt_v themselves_o to_o be_v the_o people_n of_o god_n in_o respect_n whereof_o they_o contemn_v the_o gentile_n but_o when_o christ_n come_v he_o take_v away_o these_o glorious_a boast_n of_o the_o jew_n by_o call_v the_o gentile_n also_o unto_o god_n therefore_o of_o both_o of_o we_o the_o jew_n i_o mean_v and_o the_o gentile_n he_o have_v make_v one_o people_n by_o faith_n and_o have_v so_o bountiful_o deal_v with_o we_o that_o both_o of_o we_o can_v not_o but_o needs_o confess_v that_o of_o ourselves_o we_o have_v no_o goodness_n at_o all_o but_o that_o we_o be_v all_o sinner_n and_o that_o both_o of_o we_o joint_o together_o aught_o to_o look_v for_o our_o righteousness_n and_o for_o heaven_n not_o elsewhere_o but_o from_o he_o alone_o and_o that_o we_o be_v the_o gentile_n have_v our_o assurance_n of_o faith_n that_o christ_n be_v come_v for_o our_o avail_n help_n relief_n and_o succour_n aswell_o as_o for_o the_o jew_n and_o therefore_o be_v he_o the_o corner_n stone_n for_o that_o he_o have_v join_v together_o these_o two_o wall_n knit_v they_o fast_a one_o to_o a_o other_o to_o wit_n the_o jew_n and_o the_o gentile_n that_o thereby_o we_o may_v be_v make_v one_o building_n and_o one_o house_n last_o of_o all_o the_o prophet_n thus_o conclude_v he_o that_o believe_v in_o he_o shall_v never_o be_v ashamed_a in_o that_o the_o prophet_n say_v that_o they_o shall_v not_o be_v ashamed_a which_o believe_v in_o christ_n he_o plain_o show_v unto_o we_o what_o god_n have_v in_o his_o own_o counsel_n decree_v namely_o that_o the_o whole_a world_n shall_v one_o day_n be_v confound_v and_o ashamed_a but_o yet_o that_o he_o will_v deliver_v some_o out_o of_o that_o company_n and_o number_n so_o that_o none_o shall_v be_v able_a to_o avoid_v and_o escape_v that_o confusion_n save_v only_o such_o as_o shall_v firm_o believe_v in_o christ_n in_o this_o sort_n do_v christ_n also_o he_o self_n expound_v and_o interpret_v these_o thing_n in_o the_o last_o chapter_n of_o mark_n where_o he_o say_v thus_o he_o that_o shall_v believe_v and_o be_v baptise_a shall_v be_v save_v but_o he_o that_o will_v not_o believe_v shall_v be_v damn_v in_o which_o word_n sooth_o he_o allude_v unto_o this_o prophet_n and_o therefore_o very_a well_o to_o this_o purpose_n speak_v s._n peter_n afore_o in_o his_o first_o chapter_n where_o he_o say_v that_o the_o prophet_n have_v inquire_v of_o the_o time_n and_o search_v of_o the_o salvation_n and_o prophesy_v of_o the_o grace_n that_o shall_v come_v unto_o us._n and_o after_o this_o manner_n now_o ought_v christ_n to_o be_v preach_v that_o it_o be_v he_o which_o have_v rid_v and_o deliver_v we_o from_o this_o confusion_n and_o shame_n whereunto_o we_o do_v all_o lie_n open_a &_o be_v endanger_v let_v these_o stout_a champion_n and_o brag_v maintainer_n of_o freewill_n and_o of_o any_o ablenesse_n and_o power_n in_o man_n come_v forth_o and_o answer_v this_o place_n if_o they_o can_v when_o soever_o thou_o be_v mind_v at_o once_o and_o with_o one_o reason_n utter_o to_o overthrow_v all_o human_a work_v all_o human_a doctrine_n and_o all_o whatsoever_o else_o can_v or_o may_v proceed_v from_o man_n this_o one_o place_n shall_v abundant_o furnish_v thou_o with_o sufficient_a matter_n to_o confute_v the_o same_o that_o they_o shall_v not_o be_v able_a to_o stand_v but_o to_o fall_v down_o even_o like_o dry_a leaf_n from_o a_o tree_n we_o conclude_v therefore_o that_o whatsoever_o do_v not_o stay_v and_o leave_v upon_o this_o stone_n the_o same_o to_o be_v in_o a_o desperate_a and_o forlorn_a case_n this_o quite_o debar_v thou_o from_o attribute_v any_o thing_n at_o all_o unto_o thy_o own_o work_v the_o holy_a ghost_n and_o divine_a majesty_n speak_v in_o such_o familiar_a phrase_n that_o any_o man_n may_v perceive_v the_o same_o and_o again_o utter_v all_o so_o mighty_o that_o nothing_o be_v able_a to_o stand_v against_o it_o who_o therefore_o dare_v oppose_v himself_o or_o again_o say_v this_o nay_o who_o be_v he_o that_o will_v not_o therewith_o be_v daunt_v and_o terrify_v god_n therefore_o require_v at_o our_o hand_n that_o we_o shall_v utter_o distrust_v our_o own_o self_n and_o rely_v only_o and_o whole_o upon_o his_o goodness_n be_v build_v upon_o that_o foundation_n which_o no_o creature_n can_v be_v able_a to_o overthrow_v or_o cast_v down_o which_o be_v as_o much_o to_o say_v as_o that_o no_o man_n shall_v trust_v to_o his_o own_o righteousness_n but_o depend_v and_o stay_v upon_o the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n and_o the_o benefit_n that_o he_o have_v purchase_v for_o he_o but_o what_o be_v it_o to_o stay_v depend_v and_o rely_v upon_o his_o righteousness_n it_o be_v nothing_o else_o but_o that_o i_o shall_v altogether_o despair_v of_o all_o help_n in_o myself_o and_o enter_v into_o this_o cogitation_n all_o righteousness_n all_o truth_n and_o all_o whatsoever_o be_v i_o must_v needs_o quail_v and_o be_v renounce_v and_o i_o be_o whole_o to_o put_v my_o trust_n in_o this_o that_o the_o righteousness_n truth_n and_o life_n of_o christ_n and_o all_o his_o goodness_n and_o benefit_n which_o i_o doubt_v not_o but_o be_v frank_o and_o free_o give_v unto_o i_o shall_v continue_v for_o ever_o the_o foundation_n be_v already_o lay_v wherein_o i_o firm_o stand_v and_o sure_o i_o be_o that_o whatsoever_o be_v not_o stay_v on_o it_o can_v not_o but_o altogether_o fall_v down_o but_o he_o that_o lean_v upon_o this_o foundation_n shall_v not_o only_o not_o be_v confound_v and_o ashamed_a but_o shall_v for_o ever_o stand_v so_o fast_a that_o no_o power_n be_v able_a ever_o to_o hurt_v he_o therefore_o must_v christ_n not_o only_o be_v a_o stone_n but_o a_o stone_n of_o foundation_n which_o thing_n ought_v to_o make_v we_o cheerful_a and_o bold_a for_o it_o be_v god_n that_o have_v speak_v it_o who_o can_v not_o lie_v final_o this_o stone_n serve_v not_o for_o itself_o but_o suffer_v itself_o to_o be_v tread_v down_o and_o dig_v so_o deep_a into_o the_o ground_n that_o it_o can_v not_o be_v see_v but_o the_o stone_n which_o be_v couch_v and_o lay_v upon_o it_o be_v see_v for_o therefore_o be_v he_o give_v unto_o we_o that_o we_o shall_v receive_v gift_n of_o he_o that_o we_o shall_v rest_n ourselves_o upon_o he_o stay_v on_o he_o and_o steadfast_o believe_v that_o whatsoever_o he_o be_v the_o same_o to_o be_v whole_o we_o and_o whatsoever_o he_o can_v do_v holy_a and_o church_n and_o even_o as_o thou_o do_v not_o call_v any_o man_n a_o christian_n because_o he_o have_v much_o money_n and_o wealth_n but_o because_o he_o be_v build_v upon_o the_o aforesaid_a stone_n believe_v in_o christ_n so_o likewise_o be_v thou_o not_o therefore_o call_v priest_n because_o thou_o haste_v a_o shave_a crown_n and_o jet_v the_o street_n in_o a_o long_a gown_n
