also_o against_o some_o of_o your_o own_o preacher_n of_o great_a note_n who_o read_v every_o word_n i_o be_o sure_a they_o do_v so_o heretofore_o and_o this_o be_v then_o think_v no_o hindrance_n to_o your_o profit_v by_o they_o or_o if_o it_o be_v you_o hear_v they_o when_o you_o can_v not_o profit_v by_o they_o so_o as_o you_o can_v by_o those_o that_o do_v not_o read_v and_o so_o you_o may_v do_v now_o by_o our_o preacher_n of_o this_o kind_n nay_o so_o you_o ought_v to_o do_v when_o you_o have_v nothing_o to_o say_v against_o they_o but_o what_o they_o be_v equal_o chargeable_a withal_o who_o you_o high_o commend_v iii_o but_o after_o all_o i_o have_v some_o reason_n to_o fear_v that_o when_o man_n complain_v they_o can_v profit_v by_o our_o sermon_n they_o mean_v nothing_o by_o profit_v but_o that_o their_o affection_n be_v not_o move_v in_o the_o hear_n of_o they_o so_o as_o they_o be_v by_o the_o sermon_n of_o nonconformist_n unto_o which_o i_o have_v many_o thing_n to_o say_v if_o this_o paper_n will_v contain_v they_o but_o it_o will_v be_v sufficient_a to_o touch_v only_o upon_o these_o three_o 1._o that_o man_n have_v several_a talent_n both_o among_o you_o and_o among_o we_o which_o be_v all_o very_a profitable_a some_o for_o inform_v the_o judgement_n other_o for_o move_v the_o affection_n and_o other_o which_o be_v most_o desirable_a for_o both_o you_o be_v not_o able_a to_o say_v that_o all_o you_o move_v you_o so_o as_o some_o do_v and_o yet_o you_o make_v such_o account_n of_o all_o that_o it_o have_v ever_o be_v look_v upon_o as_o a_o very_a disorderly_a thing_n among_o yourselves_o and_o worse_o than_o that_o i_o shall_v prove_v by_o and_o by_o for_o people_n to_o run_v from_o their_o own_o minister_n to_o hear_v some_o other_o though_o of_o the_o same_o way_n mere_o to_o have_v the_o affection_n more_o move_v because_o 2._o this_o alone_a be_v so_o far_o from_o profit_v by_o sermon_n that_o it_o be_v very_o great_a unprofitableness_n to_o be_v move_v by_o a_o sermon_n and_o do_v nothing_o thereupon_o but_o only_o commend_v it_o that_o be_v to_o be_v tickle_v and_o please_v a_o while_n but_o not_o alter_v nor_o change_v a_o whit_n or_o to_o be_v warm_v perhaps_o a_o little_a for_o the_o present_a and_o then_o leave_v as_o cold_a as_o a_o stone_n without_o any_o spiritual_a life_n or_o endeavour_v to_o be_v the_o better_a 3._o but_o the_o great_a thing_n of_o all_o be_v this_o that_o affection_n raise_v mere_o by_o the_o earnestness_n of_o the_o preacher_n at_o present_a in_o the_o hear_n of_o a_o sermon_n and_o it_o be_v well_o if_o the_o affection_n which_o some_o people_n speak_v of_o be_v not_o motion_n which_o they_o feel_v mere_o from_o the_o tone_n of_o the_o voice_n as_o from_o a_o take_a phrase_n a_o similitude_n or_o some_o such_o trifle_n be_v nothing_o comparable_a to_o those_o which_o we_o raise_v by_o god_n blessing_n upon_o our_o own_o serious_a consideration_n when_o we_o reflect_v upon_o what_o we_o have_v hear_v which_o sort_n of_o most_o excellent_a affection_n the_o sermon_n that_o be_v preach_v in_o our_o church_n can_v fail_v to_o produce_v if_o you_o please_v but_o to_o attend_v to_o the_o matter_n of_o they_o and_o press_v they_o upon_o your_o heart_n nay_o your_o judgement_n be_v well_o inform_v it_o will_v not_o be_v hard_o for_o you_o if_o you_o will_v but_o take_v a_o little_a pain_n with_o yourselves_o to_o excite_v such_o affection_n unto_o that_o which_o you_o know_v to_o be_v your_o duty_n as_o will_v abide_v and_o remain_v when_o the_o other_o that_o be_v excite_v in_o the_o hear_n of_o a_o sermon_n be_v go_v and_o quite_o vanish_v and_o can_v never_o be_v recall_v but_o by_o your_o own_o serious_a meditation_n upon_o those_o barren_a and_o unfruitful_a in_o the_o knowledge_n of_o our_o lord_n and_o saviour_n jesus_n christ_n iv_o and_o now_o it_o be_v time_n for_o all_o those_o who_o be_v concern_v in_o what_o have_v be_v natural_a dullness_n or_o indisposition_n which_o make_v they_o unable_a to_o attend_v or_o to_o remember_v and_o keep_v in_o mind_n as_o they_o desire_v what_o they_o have_v hear_v and_o therefore_o moral_a indisposition_n such_o as_o prejudice_n passion_n disaffection_n to_o the_o way_n of_o worship_n or_o to_o any_o christian_a doctrine_n will_v much_o more_o make_v man_n unapt_a to_o receive_v the_o like_a barrenness_n under_o your_o own_o but_o proceed_v it_o be_v to_o be_v fear_v from_o a_o worse_a cause_n of_o which_o in_o reason_n you_o shall_v suspect_v yourselves_o to_o be_v guilty_a proceed_v from_o prejudice_n from_o disaffection_n from_o disgust_n at_o some_o doctrine_n which_o they_o love_v not_o shall_v be_v touch_v from_o their_o seldom_o attendance_n upon_o the_o establish_a ministry_n from_o their_o careless_a hear_n when_o they_o be_v there_o or_o from_o the_o hasty_a sentence_n they_o pronounce_v against_o it_o before_o a_o sufficient_a trial_n and_o withal_o they_o shall_v consider_v what_o they_o mean_v by_o profit_v whether_o real_o and_o true_o they_o be_v not_o more_o earnest_o press_v in_o our_o congregation_n to_o be_v thorough_o good_a and_o virtuous_a to_o take_v a_o strict_a care_n to_o please_v god_n in_o thought_n word_n and_o deed_n than_o they_o be_v in_o those_o where_o they_o imagine_v they_o profit_v more_o because_o they_o be_v entertain_v there_o perchance_o with_o more_o please_a subject_n than_o this_o of_o their_o whole_a christian_a duty_n i_o only_o suggest_v this_o as_o a_o thing_n to_o be_v most_o deep_o ponder_v and_o do_v not_o accuse_v you_o to_o be_v guilty_a of_o such_o falseness_n to_o your_o own_o soul_n but_o this_o i_o must_v say_v that_o if_o you_o do_v not_o grow_v
to_o have_v come_v better_o prepare_v with_o honest_a and_o good_a heart_n to_o hear_v his_o word_n and_o therefore_o have_v reason_n to_o consider_v in_o your_o present_a case_n that_o since_o the_o most_o profitable_a sermon_n that_o ever_o be_v make_v can_v do_v no_o good_a unless_o man_n be_v dispose_v to_o profit_v by_o they_o whether_o the_o unprofitableness_n you_o complain_v of_o under_o hear_v the_o word_n read_v all_o may_v profit_v and_o by_o hear_v it_o preach_v even_o by_o the_o mean_a minister_n of_o christ_n if_o the_o fault_n be_v not_o in_o themselves_o how_o the_o sing_n of_o psalm_n also_o further_v the_o fruit_n of_o the_o word_n in_o the_o heart_n of_o believer_n and_o much_o more_o benefit_n may_v the_o faithful_a receive_v by_o the_o sacrament_n of_o the_o lord_n supper_n nay_o by_o be_v present_a at_o the_o administration_n of_o baptism_n all_o may_v receive_v profit_n be_v put_v in_o mind_n thereby_o of_o the_o covenant_n god_n make_v with_o they_o in_o baptism_n etc._n etc._n last_o by_o the_o blessing_n pronounce_v by_o god_n minister_n all_o may_v receive_v good_a and_o therefore_o none_o ought_v to_o absent_v himself_o from_o any_o part_n of_o the_o public_a service_n of_o god_n for_o which_o his_o second_o reason_n be_v very_o remarkable_a that_o though_o we_o can_v receive_v no_o profit_n by_o the_o exercise_n use_v in_o our_o assembly_n yet_o we_o must_v be_v present_a at_o they_o all_o to_o do_v our_o homage_n unto_o god_n and_o show_v the_o reverend_a respect_n we_o have_v to_o his_o ordinance_n for_o there_o be_v nothing_o do_v do_v etc._n etc._n if_o you_o can_v say_v that_o you_o be_v so_o well_o acquaint_v with_o these_o and_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o forego_n rule_n as_o to_o endeavour_v to_o live_v by_o they_o then_o in_o reason_n you_o ought_v to_o conclude_v that_o the_o fault_n be_v some_o where_o else_o and_o not_o in_o our_o sermon_n if_o you_o can_v profit_v by_o they_o for_o you_o do_v not_o profit_v by_o the_o holy_a scripture_n themselves_o where_o these_o thing_n be_v so_o plain_o teach_v that_o a_o man_n ought_v to_o think_v very_o mean_o of_o himself_o and_o to_o look_v upon_o himself_o as_o a_o poor_a proficient_a in_o religion_n who_o be_v not_o advance_v thus_o far_o in_o his_o regard_n to_o the_o duty_n and_o the_o solemnity_n of_o god_n worship_n and_o service_n and_o if_o be_v admonish_v of_o these_o thing_n he_o do_v not_o humble_v himself_o nay_o become_v vile_a in_o his_o own_o eye_n for_o have_v thus_o long_o entertain_v a_o high_a opinion_n of_o himself_o though_o so_o deficient_a in_o the_o very_a rudiment_n and_o beginning_n of_o religion_n he_o be_v not_o likely_a to_o be_v much_o the_o better_a for_o any_o sermon_n whatsoever_o because_o he_o will_v relish_v none_o but_o those_o only_a which_o feed_v his_o vain_a conceit_n of_o himself_o and_o of_o his_o high_a attainment_n and_o intimate_a acquaintance_n with_o god_n and_o communion_n with_o he_o in_o his_o ordinance_n while_o he_o have_v not_o a_o due_a esteem_n of_o they_o nor_o make_v a_o right_a improvement_n by_o they_o x._o but_o i_o hope_v these_o short_a admonition_n may_v put_v better_a inclination_n into_o those_o man_n mind_n who_o will_v serious_o think_v of_o they_o and_o particular_o beget_v in_o they_o a_o great_a regard_n than_o be_v usual_o give_v to_o the_o holy_a word_n of_o god_n read_v in_o our_o church_n which_o will_v dispose_v every_o one_o to_o profit_v better_o by_o all_o sermon_n which_o be_v but_o the_o interpretation_n and_o application_n of_o that_o word_n especial_o if_o with_o due_a devotion_n of_o heart_n they_o will_v join_v in_o the_o whole_a service_n forego_v by_o which_o they_o may_v profit_v i_o have_v show_v as_o much_o if_o not_o more_o as_o by_o sermon_n if_o they_o be_v religious_o dispose_v and_o will_v come_v at_o the_o begin_n of_o the_o prayer_n and_o with_o all_o humble_a reverence_n attend_v upon_o every_o part_n of_o god_n worship_n for_o as_o he_o that_o be_v away_o from_o any_o part_n of_o the_o sermon_n say_v the_o same_o person_n again_o shall_v profit_v the_o less_o by_o that_o which_o he_o do_v hear_v so_o he_o that_o be_v away_o from_o any_o part_n of_o the_o divine_a service_n get_v the_o less_o good_a by_o that_o at_o which_o he_o be_v present_a for_o there_o be_v no_o part_n of_o god_n service_n not_o the_o confession_n not_o the_o prayer_n not_o the_o psalm_n not_o the_o blessing_n but_o it_o concern_v every_o one_o and_o every_o one_o may_v receive_v edification_n by_o it_o and_o will_v lose_v much_o of_o the_o benefit_n he_o may_v have_v have_v if_o he_o absent_v himself_o from_o it_o a_o thing_n in_o which_o it_o seem_v many_o of_o they_o who_o have_v most_o knowledge_n and_o be_v the_o forward_a professor_n in_o those_o day_n do_v offend_v which_o move_v he_o to_o set_v out_o the_o sin_n of_o those_o man_n in_o several_a respect_n and_o consideration_n which_o it_o will_v be_v too_o long_o for_o i_o to_o mention_v nor_o be_v it_o needful_a if_o this_o that_o i_o have_v discourse_v already_o be_v lay_v to_o heart_n and_o if_o man_n will_v lay_v nothing_o close_o to_o their_o conscience_n all_o that_o can_v be_v say_v or_o write_v or_o preach_v will_v do_v they_o no_o good_a but_o they_o will_v be_v only_a hearer_n or_o reader_n not_o doer_n of_o the_o word_n deceive_v their_o own_o soul_n wherefore_o lay_v aside_o as_o s._n peter_n speak_v i._o ii_o 1._o 2._o all_o malice_n and_o all_o guile_n or_o deceit_n and_o hypocrisy_n and_o envy_n and_o all_o evil_a speaking_n as_o new_o bear_v babe_n desire_v the_o sincere_a milk_n of_o the_o word_n or_o that_o rational_a sincere_a milk_n the_o pure_a food_n of_o your_o mind_n and_o understanding_n and_o not_o of_o your_o fancy_n that_o you_o may_v grow_v thereby_o as_o certain_o you_o will_v when_o you_o become_v of_o the_o same_o disposition_n with_o little_a child_n void_a of_o hatred_n of_o guile_n of_o wrath_n of_o dissimulation_n and_o such_o like_a evil_a affection_n and_o be_v of_o a_o humble_a teachable_a and_o submissive_a spirit_n for_o if_o every_o one_o have_v but_o such_o a_o increase_n of_o grace_n as_o to_o hear_v meek_o god_n word_n and_o to_o receive_v it_o with_o pure_a affection_n they_o can_v not_o easy_o fail_v to_o bring_v forth_o the_o fruit_n of_o the_o spirit_n so_o we_o pray_v in_o our_o litany_n and_o may_v it_o please_v god_n as_o it_o there_o follow_v to_o bring_v into_o the_o way_n of_o truth_n all_o such_o as_o have_v err_v and_o be_v deceive_v for_o jesus_n christ_n his_o sake_n amen_n finis_fw-la
