to_o he_o it_o can_v §_o 5._o so_o that_o then_o these_o be_v the_o reason_n which_o the_o holy_a spirit_n himself_o sugge_v why_o the_o law_n be_v add_v or_o why_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n be_v revive_v after_o man_n fall_n and_o even_o after_o the_o proclaim_v of_o the_o first_o promise_n concern_v the_o woman_n seed_n gen_n 3._o 15._o which_o be_v renew_v to_o abraham_n gen._n 22._o 18._o it_o be_v add_v say_v the_o apostle_n because_o of_o transgression_n till_o the_o seed_n shall_v come_v to_o who_o the_o promise_n be_v make_v and_o it_o enter_v that_o the_o offence_n may_v abound_v it_o be_v appoint_v as_o a_o schoolmaster_n to_o christ_n to_o convince_v the_o jew_n of_o their_o necessity_n of_o a_o saviour_n and_o since_o it_o can_v be_v deny_v but_o that_o all_o the_o son_n and_o daughter_n of_o adam_n must_v of_o necessity_n be_v under_o one_o or_o another_o of_o the_o two_o covenant_n either_o that_o of_o work_n or_o that_o of_o grace_n and_o since_o all_o man_n by_o nature_n be_v child_n of_o wrath_n eph._n 2_o 3._o and_o since_o it_o will_v be_v utter_o absurd_a to_o affirm_v that_o such_o be_v under_o a_o covenant_n of_o grace_n till-converted_n it_o of_o necessity_n follow_v that_o unto_o such_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n be_v still_o in_o force_n and_o under_o it_o they_o be_v till_o wrought_v upon_o by_o the_o grace_n of_o the_o gospel_n the_o law_n abate_v nothing_o but_o still_o exact_v the_o utmost_a farthing_n neither_o from_o the_o impossibility_n of_o man_n yield_v that_o perfect_a obedience_n which_o that_o covenant_n require_v can_v we_o just_o conclude_v that_o therefore_o it_o be_v not_o still_o in_o force_n for_o god_n have_v not_o forfeit_v or_o lose_v his_o right_n of_o dominion_n though_o we_o have_v lose_v our_o strength_n or_o capacity_n of_o obedience_n so_o that_o it_o be_v evident_a that_o the_o law_n give_v upon_o mount_n sinai_n to_o the_o people_n of_o the_o wilderness_n or_o the_o law_n write_v in_o stone_n which_o be_v a_o plain_a and_o clear_a manifestation_n of_o the_o law_n write_v in_o the_o heart_n of_o man_n at_o the_o first_o be_v no_o other_o than_o a_o covenant_n of_o work_n thus_o it_o be_v to_o the_o jew_n and_o thus_o it_o still_o continue_v in_o its_o full_a power_n force_n and_o virtue_n to_o all_o man_n in_o a_o unregenerate_a state_n for_o what_o thing_n soever_o the_o law_n say_v it_o say_v to_o they_o that_o be_v under_o the_o law_n that_o every_o month_n may_v be_v stop_v and_o all_o the_o world_n may_v become_v guilty_a before_o god_n rom._n 3._o 19_o sect_n iv_o neither_o be_v the_o law_n by_o the_o jew_n only_o interpret_v as_o a_o covenant_n of_o work_n but_o as_o it_o be_v evident_a by_o moses_n himself_o and_o by_o paul_n also_o we_o be_v tell_v indeed_o by_o mr._n sedgwick_n in_o his_o forementioned_a discourse_n upon_o the_o covenant_n p._n 173._o that_o we_o must_v distinguish_v between_o the_o intention_n of_o god_n in_o give_v the_o law_n and_o the_o abuse_n or_o pervert_v of_o the_o law_n we_o grant_v say_v he_o that_o many_o of_o the_o jew_n do_v set_v up_o a_o legal_a righteousness_n for_o their_o justification_n and_o rest_v upon_o the_o work_v of_o the_o law_n as_o if_o life_n come_v by_o they_o against_o which_o paul_n do_v notable_o argue_v in_o his_o epistle_n to_o the_o roman_n and_o galatian_n but_o this_o say_v he_o be_v not_o the_o intention_n of_o god_n in_o the_o sanction_n of_o law_n they_o can_v never_o find_v a_o justify_n righteousness_n by_o the_o law_n or_o work_v of_o the_o law_n under_o the_o notion_n of_o a_o covenant_n of_o work_n nor_o do_v god_n ever_o propound_v it_o for_o that_o end_n §_o 2._o for_o answer_v hereunto_o we_o say_v that_o since_o by_o mr._n sedgwicks_n own_o confession_n the_o jew_n can_v never_o find_v a_o justify_n righteousness_n by_o the_o law_n or_o by_o the_o work_v of_o it_o from_o hence_o it_o inevitable_o follow_v that_o it_o can_v not_o be_v a_o covenant_n of_o faith_n sure_a it_o be_v that_o the_o covenant_n of_o faith_n justify_v all_o that_o be_v under_o it_o for_o be_v justify_v by_o faith_n we_o have_v peace_n with_o god_n etc._n etc._n rom._n 5._o 1._o that_o covenant_n therefore_o that_o can_v never_o justify_v any_o that_o be_v under_o it_o can_v never_o be_v a_o covenant_n of_o faith_n but_o the_o scripture_n be_v express_a that_o by_o the_o deed_n of_o the_o law_n there_o shall_v no_o flesh_n be_v justify_v in_o god_n sight_n rom._n 3._o 20._o therefore_o that_o covenant_n can_v never_o be_v a_o covenant_n of_o faith_n and_o yet_o again_o that_o covenant_n under_o which_o though_o many_o be_v justify_v yet_o none_o be_v ever_o justify_v by_o it_o or_o by_o virtue_n of_o it_o can_v never_o be_v a_o covenant_n of_o faith_n but_o such_o be_v the_o nature_n of_o the_o law_n that_o though_o many_o be_v justify_v under_o it_o yet_o none_o be_v ever_o justify_v by_o it_o or_o by_o virtue_n of_o it_o rom._n 3._o 20._o therefore_o that_o covenant_n can_v never_o be_v a_o covenant_n of_o faith_n and_o if_o the_o law_n be_v not_o a_o covenant_n of_o faith_n then_o ●t_z must_v of_o necessity_n follow_v that_o it_o can_v be_v no_o other_o than_o a_o covenant_n of_o work_n and_o indeed_o so_o it_o be_v appoint_v and_o declare_v by_o god_n himself_o leu._n 18._o 5._o you_o shall_v therefore_o keep_v my_o statute_n and_o judgement_n which_o if_o a_o man_n do_v he_o shall_v live_v in_o they_o and_o this_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n by_o the_o apostle_n paul_n take_v special_a notice_n of_o rom._n 10._o 5._o for_o moses_n say_v he_o describe_v the_o righteousness_n which_o be_v of_o the_o law_n that_o the_o man_n that_o do_v these_o thing_n shall_v live_v by_o they_o and_o what_o
