XV. 6 Esther cometh into the kings presence 7 He looketh angerly and she fainteth 8 The king doth take her up and comfort her ANd upon the third day when she had ended her prayer she laid away her mourning garments and â—â—t on her glorious apparel 2 And being gloriously adorned after she had called upon God who is the beholder and Saviour of all things she took two maids with her 3 And upon the one she leaned as carrying her self ‖ Or delicath daintily 4 And the other followed bearing up her train 5 And she was ‖ Or rose-coloured ruddy through the perfection of her beauty and her countenance was cheerful and ‖ Or as amiable or smiline very amiable but her heart was in anguish for fear 6 Then having passed through all the doors she stood before the king who sat upon his royal throne and was clothed with all his robes of majesty all glittering with gold and precious stones and he was very dreadful 7 Then lifting up his countenance that hone with majesty he looked very fiercely upon her and the queen fell down and was pale and fainted and bowed her self upon the head of the maid that went ‖ Or with her or by her before her 8 Then God changed the spirit of the king into mildness who †Gr. in an agony in a fear leaped from his throne and took her in his arms till she came to her self again and comforted her with loving words and said unto her 9 Esther what is the matter I am thy brother be of good cheer 10 Thou shalt not die though our commandment be ‖ Or as well thieâ— as mine general come near 11 And so he held up his golden sceptre and laid it upon her neck 12 And embraced her and said Speak unto me 13 Then she said unto him I saw thee my lord as an angel of God and my heart was troubled for fear of thy majesty 14 For wonderful art thou lord and thy countenance is full of grace 15 And as she was speaking ‖ Or she fell in a swoon she fell down for faintness 16 Then the king was troubled and all his servants comforted her CHAP. XVI 1 The letter of Artaxerxes 10 wherein be taxeth Aman 17 and revoketh the decree procured by Aman to destroy the Jews 22 and commandeth the day of their deliverance to be kept holy THe great king Artaxerxes unto the princes and governours of an hundred and seven and twenty provinces from India unto Ethiopia Joseph Ant. l. 11. c. 6. and unto all ‖ Or well-affected to our state our faithful subjects greeting 2 Many the more often they are honoured with the great bounty of †Gr. their benefactors their gracious princes the more proud they are waxen 3 And endeavour to hurt not our subjects onely but not being able to bear abundance do take in hand to practise also against those that do them good 4 And take not onely thankfulness away from among men but also lifted up with the glorious words of ‖ Or needy lewd persons ‖ Or that never casted prosperity that were never good they think to escape the justice of God that seeth all things and hateth evil 5 Oftentimes also fair speech ‖ Or of our friends put in trust to manage the affairs of those that are put in trust to manage their friends affairs hath caused many that are in authority to be partakers of innocent bloud and hath enwrapped them in remediless calamities 6 Beguiling with the falshood and deceit of their lewd disposition the innocency and goodness of princes 7 Now ye may see this as we have declared not so much by ancient histories as ye may if ye search what hath been wickedly done of late through the pestilent behaviour of them that are unworthily placed in authority 8 And we must take care for the time to come that our kingdom may be quiet and
a very fair woman and one that feared the Lord. 3 Her parents also were righteous and taught their daughter according to the law of Moses 4 Now Joacim was a great rich man and had a fair garden joyning unto his house and to him resorted the Jews because he was more honourable then all others 5 The same year were appointed two of the ancients of the people to be judges such as the Lord spake of that wickedness came from Babylon from ancient judges who seemed to govern the people 6 These kept much at Joacims house and all that had any suits in law came unto them 7 Now when the people departed away at noon Susanna went into her husbands garden to walk 8 And the two elders saw her going in every day and walking so that their lust was inflamed toward her 9 And they perverted their own minde and turned away their eyes that they might not look unto heaven nor remember just judgements 10 And albeit they both were wounded with her love yet durst not one shew another his grief 11 For they were ashamed to declare their lust that they desired to have to do with her 12 Yet they watched diligently from day to day to see her 13 And the one said to the other Let us now go home for it is dinner-time 14 So when they were gone out they parted the one from the other and turning back again they came to the same place and after they had asked one another the cause they acknowledged their lust then appointed they a time both together when they might finde her alone 15 And it fell out as they watched a fit time she went in †Gr. as yesterday and the day before as before with two maids onely and she was desirous to wash her self in the garden for it was hot 16 And there was no body there save the two elders that had hid themselves and watched her 17 Then she said to her maids Bring me oyl and washing-balls and shut the garden doors that I may wash me 18 And they did as she bade them and shut the garden-doors and went out themselves at ‖ Or side-doors privy doors to fetch the things that she had commanded them but they saw not the elders because they were hid 19 Now when the maids were gone forth the two elders rose up and ran unto her saying 20 Behold the garden-doors are shut that no man can see us and we are in love with thee therefore consent unto us and lie with us 21 If thou wilt not we will bear witness against thee that a young man was with thee and therefore thou didst send away thy maids from thee 22 Then Susanna sighed and said I am straighted on every side for if I do this thing it is death unto me and if I do it not I cannot escape your hands 23 It is better for me to fall into your hands and not to do it then to sin in the sight of the Lord. 24 With that Susanna cried with a loud voice and the two elders cried out against her 25 Then ran the one and opened the garden-door 26 So when the servants of the house heard the cry in the garden they rushed in at a privy door to see what was done unto her 27 But when the elders had declared their matter the servants were greatly ashamed for there was never such a report made of Susanna 28 And it came to pass the next day when the people were assembled to her husband Joacim the two elders came also full of mischievous imagination against Susanna to put her to death 29 And said before the people Send for Susanna the daughter of Chelcias Joacims wife and so they sent 30 So she came with her father and mother her children and all her kindred 31 Now Susanna was a very delicate woman and beauteous to behold 32 And these wicked men commanded to uncover her face for she was covered that they might be filled with her beauty 33 Therefore her friends and all that saw her wept 34 Then the two elders stood up in the mids of the people and said their hands upon her head 35 And she weeping looked up towards heaven for her heart trusted in the Lord. 36 And the elders said As we walked in the garden alone this woman came in with two maids and shut the garden doors and sent the maids away 37 Then a young man who there was hid came unto her and lay with her 38 Then we that stood in a corner of the garden seeing this wickedness ran unto them 39 And when we saw them together the man we could not hold for he was stronger then we and opened the door and leaped out 40 But having taken this woman we asked who the young man was but she would not tell us these things do we testifie 41 Then the assembly beleeve them as those that were the elders and judges of the people so they condemned her to death 42 Then Susanna cried out with a loud voice and said O everlasting God that knowest the secrets and knowest all things before they be 43 Thou knowest that they have born false witness against me and behold I must die whereas I never did such things as these men have maliciously invented against me 44 And the Lord heard her voice 45 Therefore when she was led to be put to death the Lord raised up the holy spirit of a young youth whose name was Daniel 46 Who cried with a loud voice I am clear from the bloud of this woman 47 Then all the people turned them towards him and said What mean those words that thou hast spoken 48 So he standing in the midst of them said Are ye such fools ye sons of Israel that without examination or knowledge of the truth ye have condemned a daughter of Israel 49 Return again to the place of judgement for they have born false witness against her 50 Wherefore all the people turned again in haste and the elders said unto him Come sit down among us and shew it us seeing God hath given thee the honour of an elder 51 Then said Daniel unto them Put these two aside one far from another and I will examine them 52 So when they were put asunder one from another he called one of them and said unto him O thou that art waxen old in wickedness now thy sins which thou hast committed aforetime are come to light 53 For thou hast pronounced false judgement and hast condemned the innocent and hast let the guilty go free albeit the Lord saith * Exod. 23.7 The innocent and righteous shalt thou not slay 54 Now then if thou hast seen her tell me Under what tree sawest thou them companying together Who answered Under a †Gr. let fire come out from the men of Shechem and from the house of Millo and devour Abimelech 21 And Jotham ran away and fled and went to Beer and dwelt there for fear of Abimelech his brother 22 ¶ When Abimelech had reigned three years over Israel 23 Then God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the men of Shechem the men of Shechem dealt treacherously with Abâ—melech 24 That the cruelty done to the threescore and ten sons of Jerubbaal might come and their bloud be laid upon Abimelech their brother which slew them and upon the men of Shechem which †Heb. strengthened his hand to kill aided him in the killing of his brethren 25 And the men of Shechem set liers in wait for him in the top of the mountains and they robbed all that came along that way by them and it was told Abimelech 26 And Gaal the son of Ebed came with his brethren and went over to Shechem and the men of Shechem put their confidence in him 27 And they went out into the fields and gathered their vin-yards and trode the grapes and made ‖ Or suâ—â—â—â— merry and went into the house of their god and did eat and drink and cursed Abimelech 28 And Gaal the son of Ebed said Who is Abimelech and who is Shechem that we should serve him is not he the son of Jerubbaal and Zebul his officer serve the men of Hamor the father of Shechem for why should we serve him 29 And would to God this people were under my hand then would I remove Abimelech And he said to Abimelech Increase thine army and come out 30 ¶ And when Zebul the ruler of the city heard the words of Gaal the son of Ebed his anger was ‖ Or. hot kindled 31 And he sent messengers unto Abimelech †Heb. craftily or to Tormah privily saying Behold Gaal the son of Ebed and his brethren be come to Shechem and behold they fortifie the city against thee 32 Now therefore up by night thou and the people that is with thee and he in wait in the field 33 And it shall be that in the morning assoon as the sun is up thou shall rise early and set upon the city and behold when he and the people that is with him come out against thee then mayest thou do to them †Heb. as thine hand shall finde as thou shalt finde occasion 34 ¶ And Abimelech rose up and all the people that were with him by night and they said wait against Shechem in four companies 35 And Gaal the son of Ebed went out and stood in the entring of the gate of the city and Abimelech rose up and the people that were with him from lying in wait 36 And when Gaal saw the people he said to Zebul Behold there come people down from the top of the mountains And Zebul said unto him Thou seest the shadow of the mountains as if they were men 37 And Gaal spake again and said See there come people down by the †Heb. navel middle of the land and another company come along by the plain of †Or the regarders of times Meonenim 38 Then said Zebul unto him Where is now thy mouth wherewith thou saidst Who is Abimelech that we should serve him is not this the people that thou hast despised go out I pray now and fight with them 39 And Gaal went out before the men of Shechem and fought with Abimelech 40 And Abimelech chased him and he fled before him and many were overthrown and wounded even unto the entring of the gate 41 And Abimelech dwelt at Arumah and Zebul thrust out Gaal and his brethren that they should not dwell in Shechem 42 And it came to pass on the morrow that the people went out into the field and they told Abimelech 43 And he took the people and divided them into three companies and laid wait in the held and looked and behold the people were come forth out of the city and he rose up against them and smote them 44 And Abimelech and the company that was with him rushed forward and stood in the entring of the gate of the city and the two other companies ran upon all the people that were in the fields and slew them 45 And Abimelech fought against the city all that day and he took the city and slew the people that was therein and beat down the city and sowed it with salt 46 ¶ And when all the men of the tower of Shechem heard that they entred into an hold of the house of the god Berith 47 And it was told Abimelech that all the men of the tower of Shechem were gathered together 48 And Abimelech gat him up to mount Zalmon he and all the people that were with him and Abimelech took an ax in his hand and cut down a bough from the trees and took it and laid it on his shoulder and said unto the people that were with him What ye have seen †Heb. I have done me do make haste and do as I have done 49 And all the people likewise cut down every man his bough and followed Abimelech and put them to the hold and set the hold on fire upon them so that all the men of the tower of Shechem died also about a thousand men and women 50 ¶ Then went Abimelech to Thebez and encamped against Thebez and took it 51 But there was a strong tower within the city and thither fled all the men and women and all they of the city and shut it to them and gat them up to the top of the tower 52 And Abimelech came unto the tower and fought against it and went hard unto the door of the tower to burn it with fire 53 And a certain woman * 2 Sam. 11.21 cast a piece of a milâ—tone upon Abimelechs head and all to brake his scull 54 Then he called hastily unto the young man his armour-bearer said unto him Draw thy sword and slay me that men say not of me A woman slew him And his young man thrust him through and he died 55 And when the men of Israel saw that Abimelech was dead they departed every man unto his place 56 ¶ Thus God rendred the wickedness of Abimelech which he did unto his father in slaying his seventy brethren 57 And all the evil of the men of Shechem did God render upon their heads and upon them came the curse of Jotham the son of Jerubbaal CHAP. X. 1 Tola judgeth Israel in Shamir 3 Jair whose thirty sons had thirty cities 7 The Philisâ—ines and Ammonites oppress Israel 10 In their misery God sendeth them to their false gods 15 upon their repentance he pitieth them ANd after Abimelech there arose to ‖ Or deliver †Heb. save defend Israel Tola the son of Puah the son of Dodo a man of Issachar and he dwelt in Shamir in mount Ephraim 2 And he judged Israel twenty and three
and the LORD delivered them into the hand of the Philistines fourty years 2 ¶ And there was a certain man of Zorah of the family of the Danites whose name was Manoah and his wife was barren and bare not 3 And the angel of the LORD appeared unto the woman and said unto her Behold now thou art barren and bearest not but thou shalt conceive and bear a son 4 Now therefore beware I pray thee and * Numb 6 2 3. drink not wine nor strong drink and eat not any unclean thing 5 For lo thou shalt conceive and bear a son and * Numb 6.5 1 Sam. 1.11 no rasour shall come on his head for the childe shall be a Nazarite unto God from the womb and he shall begin to deliver Israel out of the hand of the Philistines 6 ¶ Then the woman came and told her husband saying A man of God came unto me and his countenance was like the countenance of an angel of God very terrible but I asked him not whence he was neither told he me his name 7 But he said unto me Behold thou shalt conceive and bear a son and now drink no wine nor strong drink neither eat any unclean thing for the childe shall be a Nazarite to God from the womb to the day of his death 8 ¶ Then Manoah intreated the LORD and said O my Lord let the man of God which thou didst send come again unto us and teach us what we shall do unto the childe that shall be born 9 And God hearkned to the voice of Manoah and the angel of God came again unto the woman as she sat in the field but Manoah her husband was not with her 10 And the woman made haste and ran and shewed her husband and said unto him Behold the man hath appeared unto me that came unto me the other day 11 And Manoah arose and went after his wife and came to the man and said unto him Art thou the man that spakest unto the woman And he said I am 12 And Manoah said Now let thy words come to pass †Heb. How shall we order the childe and ‖ Or what shall be do †Heb. what shall be his work how shall we do unto him 13 And the angel of the LORD said unto Manoah Of all that I said unto the woman let her beware 14 She may not eat of any thing that cometh of the vine neither let her drink wine or strong drink nor eat any unclean thing all that I commanded her let her observe 15 ¶ And Manoah said unto the angel of the LORD I pray thee let us detain thee until we shall have made ready a kid †Heb. before thee for thee 16 And the angel of the LORD said unto Manoah Though thou detain me I will not eat of thy bread and it thou wilt offer a burnt-offering thou must offer it unto the LORD for Manoah knew not that he was an angel of the LORD 17 And Manoah said unto the angel of the LORD What is thy name that when thy sayings come to pass we may do thee honour 18 And the angel of the LORD said unto him Why askest thou thus after my name seeing it is ‖ Or wonderful secret 19 So Manoah took a kid with a meat-offering and offered it upon a rock unto the LORD and the angel did wondrously and Manoah and his wife looked on 20 For it came to pass when the flame went up toward heaven from off the altar that the angel of the LORD ascended in the flame of the altar and Manoah and his wife looked on it and fell on their faces to the ground 21 But the angel of the LORD did no more appear to Manoah and to his wife Then Manoah knew that he was an angel of the LORD 22 And Manoah said unto his wife * Exod. 33.20 Ch. 6.22 We shall surely die because we have seen God 23 But his wife said unto him If the LORD were pleased to kill us he would not have received a burnt-offering and a meat-offering at our hands neither would he have shewed us all these things nor would as at this time have told us such things as these 24 ¶ And the woman bare a son and called his name Samson and the childe grew and the LORD blessed him 25 And the spirit of the LORD began to move him at times in the camp of Dan between Zorah and Eshtaol CHAP. XIV 1 Samson desireth a wife of the Philistines 5 In his journey he killeth a lion 8 In a second journey be findeth honey in the carcase 10 Samsons marriate-feast 12 His riddle by his wife is made known 19 He spoileth thirty Philistines 20 His wife is married to another ANd Samson went down to Timnath and saw a woman in Timnath of the daughters of the Philistines 2 And he came up and told his father and his mother and said I have seen a woman in Timnath of the daughters of the Philistines now therefore get her for me to wife 3 Then his father and his mother said unto him Is there never a woman among the daughters of thy brethren or among all my people that thou goest to take a wife of the uncircumcised Philistines And Samson said unto his father Get her for me for †Heb. she is right in mine eyes she pleaseth me well 4 But his father and his mother knew not that it was of the LORD that he sought an occasion against the Philistines for at that time the Philistines had dominion over Israel 5 Then went Samson down and his father and his mother to Timnath and came to the vineyards of Timnath and behold a young lion roared †Heb. in meeting him against him 6 And the spirit of the LORD came mightily upon him and he rent him as he would have rent a kid and he had nothing in his hand but he told not his father or his mother what he had done 7 And he went down and talked with the woman and she pleased Samson well 8 ¶ And after a time he returned to take her and he turned aside to see the carcase of the lion and behold there was a swarm of bees and honey in the carcase of the lion 9 And he took thereof in his hands and went on eating and came to his father and mother and he gave them and they did eat but he told not them that he had taken the honey out of the carcase of the lion 10 ¶ So his father went down unto the woman and Samson made there a feast for so used the young men to do 11 And it came to pass when they saw him that they brought thirty companions to be with him 12 ¶ And Samson said unto them I will now put forth a riddle unto you if you can certainly declare it me within the seven days of the feast and finde it out then I will give
light †Heb. of his feet of foot †Heb. as one of the roes that is in the field as a wilde roe 19 And Asahel pursued after Abner and in going he turned not to the right hand nor to the left †Heb. from after Abner from following Abner 20 Then Abner looked behinde him and said Art thou Asahel and he answered I am 21 And Abner said to him Turn thee aside to thy right hand or to thy left and lay thee hold on one of the young men and take thee his ‖ Or spoil armour But Asahel would not turn aside from following of him 22 And Abner said again to Asahel Turn thee aside from following me wherefore should I smite thee to the ground how then should I hold up my face to Joab thy brother 23 Howbeit he refused to turn aside wherefore Abner with the hinder end of the spear smote him under the fifth rib that the spear came out behinde him and he fell down there and died in the same place and it came to pass that as many as came to the place where Asahel fell down and died stood still 24 Joab also and Abishai pursued after Abner and the sun went down when they were come to the hill of Ammah that lieth before Giah by the way of the wilderness of Gibeon 25 ¶ And the children of Benjamin gathered themselves together after Abner and became one troup and stood on the top of an hill 26 Then Abner called to Joab and said Shall the sword devour for ever knowest thou not that it will be bitterness in the latter end how long shall it be then ere thou bid the people return from following their brethren 27 And Joab said As God liveth unless thou hadst spoken surely then †Heb. from the morning in the morning the people had ‖ Or gone away gone up every one from following his brother 28 So Joab blew a trumpet and all the people stood still and pursued after Israel no more neither fought they any more 29 And Abner and his men walked all that night through the plain and passed over Jordan and went through all Bithron and they came to Mahanaim 30 And Joab returned from following Abner and when he had gathered all the people together there lacked of Davids servants nineteen men and Asahel 31 But the servants of David had smitten of Benjamin and of Abners men so that three hundred and threescore men died 32 ¶ And they took up Asahel and buried him in the sepulchre of his father which was in Beth-lehem and Joab and his men went all night and they came to Hebron at break of day CHAP. III. 1 During the war David still waxeth stronger 2 Six sons were born to him in Hebron 6 Abner displeased with Ish-bosheth 12 revolteth to David 13 David requireth a condition to bring him his wife Michal 17 Abner having communed with the Israelites is feasted by David and dismissed 22 Joab returning from battel is displeased with the king and killeth Abner 28 David curseth Joab 31 and mourneth for Abner NOw there was long war between the house of Saul and the house of David but David waxed stronger and stronger and the house of Saul waxed weaker and weaker 2 ¶ And unto David were sons born in Hebron and his first-born was Amnon of Ahinoam the Jezreelitess 3 And his second Chileab of Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite and the third Absalom the son of Maacah the daughter of Talmai king of Geshur 4 And the fourth Adonijah the son of Haggith and the fifth Shephatiah the son of Abital 5 And the sixth Ithream by Eglah Davids wife these were born to David in Hebron 6 ¶ And it came to pass while there was war between the house of Saul and the house of David that Abner made himself strong for the house of Saul 7 And Saul had a concubine whose name was * Chap. 21.10 Rizpah the daughter of Aiah and Ish-bosheth said unto Abner Wherefore hast thou gone in unto my fathers concubine 8 Then was Abner very wroth for the words of Ish-bosheth and said Am I a dogs head which against Judah do shew kindness this day unto the house of Saul thy father to his brethren and to his friends and have not delivered thee into the hand of David that thou chargest me to day with a fault concerning this woman 9 So do God to Abner and more also except as the LORD hath sworn to David even so I do to him 10 To translate the kingdom from the house of Saul and to set up the throne of David over Israel and over Judah from Dan even to Beer sheba 11 And he could not answer Abner a word again because he feared him 12 ¶ And Abner sent messengers to David on his behalf saying Whose is the land saying also Make thy league with me and behold my hand shall be with thee to bring about all Israel unto thee 13 ¶ And he said Well I will make a league with thee but one thing I require of thee †Heb. saying that is Thou shalt not see my face except thou first bring Michal Sauls daughter when thou comest to see my face 14 And David sent messengers to Ish-bosheth Sauls son saying Deliver me my wife Michal which I espoused to me * 1 Sam. 18.25 27. for an hundred foreskins of the Philistines 15 And Ish-bosheth sent and took her from her husband even from * 1 Sam. 25.44 Phalti Phaltiel the son of Laish 16 And her husband went with her †Heb. going and weeping along weeping behinde her to Bahurim then said Abner unto him Go return And he returned 17 ¶ And Abner had communication with the elders of Israel saying Ye sought for David †Heb. both yesterday and the third day in times past to be king over you 18 Now then do it for the LORD hath spoken of David saying By the hand of my servant David I will save my people Israel out of the hand of the Philistines and out of the hand of all their enemies 19 And Abner also spake in the ears of Benjamin and Abner went also to speak in the ears of David in Hebron all that seemed good to Israel and that seemed good to the whole house of Benjamin 20 So Abner came to David to Hebron and twenty men with him and David made Abner and the men that were with him a feast 21 And Abner said unto David I will arise and go and will gather all Israel unto my lord the king that they may make a league with thee that thou mayest reign over all that thine heart desireth And David sent Abner away and he went in peace 22 ¶ And behold the servants of David and Joab came from pursuing a troup and brought in a great spoil with them but Abner was not with David in Hebron for he had sent him away and he was gone in peace 23 When
to his heart to think that all the kings sons are dead for Amnon onely is dead 34 But Absalom fled And the young man that kept the watch lift up his eyes and looked and behold there came much people by the way of the hill-side behinde him 35 And Jonadab said unto the king Behold the kings sons come †Heb. according to the word of thy servant as thy servant said so it is 36 And it came to pass assoon as he had made an end of speaking that behold the kings sons came and lift up their voice and wept and the king also and all his servants wept †Heb. with a great weeping greatly very sore 37 ¶ But Absalom fled and went to Talmai the son of ‖ Or Ammibur Ammihud king of Geshur and David mourned for his son every day 38 So Absalom fled and went to Geshur and was there three years 39 And the soul of king David ‖ Or was consumed longed to go forth unto Absalom for he was comforted concerning Amnon seeing he was dead CHAP. XIV 1 Joab suborning a widow of Tekoah by a parable to incline the kings heart to fetch home Absalom bringeth him to Jerusalem 25 Absaloms beauty hair and children 28 After two years Absalom by Joab is brought into the kings presence NOw Joab the son of Zeruiah perceived that the kings heart was toward Absalom 2 And Joab sent to Tekoah and fetcht thence a wife woman and said unto her I pray thee feign thy self to be a mourner and put on now mourning-apparel and anoint not thy self with oyl but be as a woman that had a long time mourned for the dead 3 And come to the king and speak on this manner unto him So Joab put the words in her mouth 4 ¶ And when the woman of Tekoah spake to the king she fell on her face to the ground and did obeisance and said †Heb. Save Help O king 5 And the king said unto her What aileth thee And she answered I am indeed a widow woman and mine husband is dead 6 And thy hand-maid had two sons and they two strove together in the field and there was †Heb. no deliverer between them none to part them but the one smote the other and slew him 7 And behold the whole family is risen against thine hand-maid and they said Deliver him that smote his brother that we may kill him for the life of his brother whom he slew and we will destroy the heir also and so they shall quench my coal which is left and shall not leave to my husband neither name nor remainder †Heb. upon the face of the earth upon the earth 8 And the king said unto the woman Go to thine house and I will give charge concerning thee 9 And the woman of Tekoah said unto the king My lord O king the iniquity be on me and on my fathers house and the king and his throne be guiltless 10 And the king said Whosoever saith ought unto thee bring him to me and he shall not touch thee any more 11 Then said she I pray thee let the king remember the LORD thy God †Heb. that the revenger of bloud do not multiply to destroy that thou wouldest not suffer the revengers of bloud to destroy any more lest they destroy my son And he said As the LORD liveth there shall not one hair of thy son fall to the earth 12 Then the woman said Let thine hand-maid I pray thee speak one word unto my lord the king And he said Say on 13 And the woman said Wherefore then hast thou thought such a thing against the people of God for the king doth speak this thing as one which is faulty in that the king doth not fetch home again his banished 14 For we must needs die and are as water spilt on the ground which cannot be gathered up again ‖ Or because God hath not taken away his life he hath also devised means c. neither doth God respect any person yet doth he devise means that his banished be not expelled from him 15 Now therefore that I am come to speak of this thing unto my lord the king it is because the people have made me afraid and thy hand-maid said I will now speak unto the king it may be that the king will perform the request of his hand-maid 16 For the king will hear to deliver his hand-maid out of the hand of the man that would destroy me and my son together out of the inheritance of God 17 Then thine hand-maid said The word of my lord the king shall now be †Heb. for rest comfortable for as an angel of God so is my lord the king †Heb. to bear to discern good bad therefore the LORD thy God will be with thee 18 Then the king answered and said unto the woman Hide not from me I pray thee the thing that I shall ask thee And the woman said Let my lord the king now speak 19 And the king said Is not the hand of Joab with thee in all this And the woman answered and said As thy soul liveth my lord the king none can turn to the right hand or to the left from ought that my lord the king hath spoken for thy servant Joab he bade me and he put all these words in the mouth of thine hand-maid 20 To fetch about this form of speech hath thy servant Joab done this thing and my lord is wise according to the wisdom or an angel of God to know all things that are in the earth 21 ¶ And the king said unto Joab Behold now I have done this thing go therefore bring the young man Absalom again 22 And Joab fell to the ground on his face and bowed himself and †Heb. blessed thanked the king and Joab said To day thy servant knoweth that I have found grace in thy sight my lord O king in that the king hath fulfilled the request of ‖ Or thy his servant 23 So Joab arose and went to Geshur and brought Absalom to Jerusalem 24 And the king said Let him turn to his own house and let him not see me sace So Absalom returned to his own house and saw not the kings face 25 ¶ †Heb. And a◠Absalom there was not a beautiful man man is all Israel to praise greatly But in all Israel there was none to be so much praised as Absalom for his beauty from the sole of his foot even to the crown of his head there was no blemish in him 26 And when he polled his head for it was at every years end that he polled it because the hair was heavy on him therefore he polled it he weighed the hair of his head at two hundred shekels after the kings weight 27 And unto Absalom there were born three sons and one daughter whose name was Tamar she was a woman of a fair countenance 28 ¶
of Israel answered the men of Judah and said We have ten parts in the king and we have also more right in David then ye why then dâ—d ye †Heb. set us at â—ight despise us that our advice should not be first had in bringing back our king And the words of the men of Judah were fiercer then the words of the men of Israel CHAP. XX. 1 By occasion of the quarrel Sheba maketh a party in Israel 3 Davids ten concubines are shut up in perpetual prâ—son 4 Amasa made captain over Judah is slain by Jâ—ab 14 Joab pursueth Sheba unto Abel 16 A wise woman saveth the city by Sheba's head 23 Davids officers ANd there hapned to be there a man of Belial whose name was Sheba the son of Bâ—chri a Benjamite and he blew a trumpet and said We have no part in David neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse every man to his tents O Israel 2 So every man of Israel went up from after David and followed Sheba the son of Bâ—chri but the men of Judah clave unto their king from Jordan even to Jerusalem 3 ¶ And David came to his house at Jerusalem and the king took the ten women his * Chap. 16.22 concubines whom he had left to keep the house and put them in †Heb. a house of ward ward and fed them but went not in unto them so they were †Heb. bound shut up unto the day of their death †Heb. in widowhood of life living in widowhood 4 ¶ Then said the king to Amasa †Heb. Call Assemble me the men of Judah within three days and be thou here present 5 So Amasa went to assemble the men of Judah but he tarried longer then the set time which he had appointed him 6 And David said to Abishai Now shall Sheba the son of Bichri do us more harm then did Absalom take thou thy lords servants and pursue after him lest he get him fenced cities and †Heb. deliver himself from our eyes escape us 7 And there went out after him Joabs men and the * Chap. 8.18 Cherethites and the Pelethites and all the mighty men and they went out of Jerusalem to pursue after Sheba the son of Bichri 8 When they were at the great stone which is in Gibeon Amasa went before them and Joabs garment that he had put on was girded unto him and upon it a girdle with a sword fastned upon his loyns in the sheath thereof and as he went forth it fell out 9 And Joab said to Amasa Art thou in health my brother And Joab took Amasa by the beard with the right hand to kiss him 10 But Amasa took no heed to the sword that was in Joabs hand so he smote him therewith in the fifth rib and shed out his bowels to the ground and †Heb. dâ—ubled not 〈◊〉 stroke strook him not again and he died so Joab and Abishai his brother pursued after Sheba the son of Bichri 11 And one of Joabs men stood by him and said He that favoureth Joab and he that is for David let him go after Joab 12 And Amasa wallowed in bloud in the midst of the high-way and when the man saw that all the people stood still he removed Amasa out of the high-way into the field and cast a cloth upon him when be saw that every one that came by him stood still 13 When he was removed oâ—t of the high-way all the people went on after Joab to pursue after Sheba the son of Bichri 14 ¶ And he went through all the tribes of Israel unto Abel and to Beth-maachah and all the Berites and they were gathered together and went also after him 15 And they came and besieged him in Abel of Beth-maachah and they cast up a bank against the city and ‖ Or it stoâ—◠〈◊〉 the outmost 〈◊〉 it stood in the trench and all the people that were with Joab †Heb. â—â—â—ed to â—â—row down battered the wall to throw it down 16 ¶ Then cried a wise woman out of the city Hear hear say I pray you unto Joab Come near hither that I may speak with thee 17 And when he was come near unto her the woman said Art thou Joab And he answered I am he Then she said unto him Hear the woâ—ds of thine hand-maid And he answered I do hear 18 Then she spake saying ‖ Or Tâ—â—â—â—â—ainly spake in the beginning sayinâ— Surely they will ask of Abel and so make an end They were wont to speak in old time saying They shall surely ask counsel at Abel and so they ended 〈◊〉 matter 19 I am one of them that are peaceable and faithful in Israel thou seekeâ—t to destroy a city and a mother in Israel why wilt thou swallow up the inheritance of the LORD 20 And Joab answered and said Far be it far be it from me that I should swallow up or destroy 21 The matter is not so but a man of mount Ephraim Sheba the 〈◊〉 of Bichri †Heb. by 〈◊〉 name by name hath lift up his hand against the king even against David deliver him onely and I will depart from the câ—ty And the woman said unto Joab Behold his head shall be thrown to thee over the wall 22 Then the woman went unto all the people in her wisdom and they cut off the head of Sheba the son of Bichri and cast it out to Joab and he blew a trumpet and they †Heb. were sâ—aâ—â—â—â—ed retired from the city every man to his tent and Joab returned to Jerusalem unto the king 23 ¶ Now * Chap. 8.16 Joab was over all the host of Israel and Benaiâ—h the son of Jehoiada was over the Cherethâ—tes and over the Pelethites 24 And Adoram was over the tribute and Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was ‖ Or remâ—mbrancâ—â— recorder 25 And Sheva was scribe and Zadok and Abiathar were the priests 26 And Ira also the Jairite was ‖ Or a 〈◊〉 a chief ruler about David CHAP. XXI 1 The three years famine for the Gibeonites cease by hangint seven of Sâ—uls sons 10 Râ—zpahs kindness unto the dead 12 David burieth the bones of Saul and Jonathan in his fathâ—rs sepulchre 15 Four battels against the Philistines wherein four vâ—liants of David slay four giants THen there was a famine in the days of David three yâ—ars year after year and David †Heb. sâ—uâ—â—t the faâ—e c. enquired of the LORD And the LORD answered It is for Saul and for his bloudy house because he â—lew the Gibeonites 2 And the king called the Gibeonites and said unto them now the Gibeonites were not of the children of Israel but * Josh 9.3 16 17. of the remnant of the Amorâ—tes and the children of Israel had sworn unto them and Saul sought to slay them in his zeal to the children of Israel and Judah 3 Wherefore David said unto the Gibeonites What

VI. 1 Elisha giving leave to the young prophets to enlarge their dwellings causeth iron to swim 8 He discloseth the king of Syria his counsel 13 The army which was sent to Dothan to apprehend Elisha is smitten with blindness 19 Being brought into Samaria they are dismissed in peace 24 The famine in Samaria causeth women to eat their own children 30 The king sendeth to slay Elisha ANd the sons of the prophets said unto Elisha Behold now the place where we dwell with thee is too strait for us 2 Let us go we pray thee unto Jordan and take thence every man a beam and let us make us a place there where we may dwell And he answered Go ye 3 And one said be content I pray thee and go with thy servants And he answered I will go 4 So he went with them And when they came to Jordan they cut down wood 5 But as one was felling a beam the †Heb. iron ax-head fell into the water and he cried and â—â—â—d Alas master for it was borrowed 6 And the man of God said Where fell it And he shewed him the place And he cut down a stick and cast it in thither and the iron did swim 7 Therefore said he Take it up to thee And he put out his hand and took it 8 ¶ Then the king of Syria warred against Israel and took counsel with his servants saying In such and such a place shall be my ‖ Or â—â—â—ampâ—â—â— camp 9 And the man of God sent unto the king of Israel saying Beware that thou pass not such a place for thither the Syrians are come down 10 And the king of Israel sent to the place which the man of God told him and warned him of and saved himself there not once nor twice 11 Therefore the heart of the king of Syria was fore troubled for this thing and he called his servants and said unto them Will ye not shew me which of us is for the king of Israel 12 And one of his servants said †Heb. No. None my lord O king but Elisha the prophet that is in Israel telleth the king of Israel the words that thou speakest in thy bed-chamber 13 ¶ And he said Go and spie where he is that I may send and fetch him And it was told him saying Behold be is in Dothan 14 Therefore sent he thither horses and chariots and a †Heb. 〈◊〉 great host and they came by night and compassed the city about 15 And when the ‖ Or minister servant of the man of God was risen early and gone forth behold an host compassed the city both with horses and chariots and his servant said unto him Alas my master how shall we do 16 And he answered Fear not for * 2 Chr. 22.7 they that be with us art mo then they that be with them 17 And Elisha prayed and said LORD I pray thee open his eyes that he may see And the LORD opened the eyes of the young man and he saw and behold the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha 18 And when they came down to him Elisha prayed unto the LORD and said Smite this people I pray thee with blindness And he smote them with blindness according to the word of Elisha 19 ¶ And Elisha said unto them This is not the way neither is this the city †Heb. come ye after me follow me and I will bring you to the man whom ye seek But he led them to Samaria 20 And it came to pass when they were come into Samaria that Elisha said LORD open the eyes of these men that they may see And the LORD opened their eyes and they saw and behold they were in the mids of Samaria 21 And the king of Israel said unto Elisha when he saw them My father shall I smite them shall I smite them 22 And he answered Thou shalt not smite them wouldest thou smite those whom thou hast taken captive with thy sword and with thy bowe set bread and water before them that they may eat and drink and go to their master 23 And he prepared great provision for them and when they had eaten and drunk he sent them away and they went to their master So the hands of Syria came no more into the land of Israel 24 ¶ And it came to pass after this that Ben-hadad king of Syria gathered all his host and went up and besieged Samaria 25 And there was a great famine in Samaria and behold they besieged it until an asses head was sold for fourscore pieces of silver and the fourth part of a cab of doves dung for five pieces of silver 26 And as the king of Israel was passing by upon the wall there cried a woman unto him saying Help my lord O king 27 And he said ‖ Or let not the LORD save thee If the LORD do not help thee whence shall I help thee out of the barn-floor or out of the wine-press 28 And the king said unto her What aileth thee And she answered This woman said unto me Give thy son that we may eat him to day and we will eat my son to morrow 29 So * Deut. 28.53 we boiled my son and did eat him and I said unto her on the †Heb. â—â—â—er next day Give thy son that we may eat him and she hath hid her son 30 ¶ And it came to pass when the king heard the words of the woman that he tent his clothes and he passed by upon the wall and the people looked and behold he had sackcloth within upon his flesh 31 Then he said God do so and more also to me if the head of Elisha the son of Shaphat shall stand on him this day 32 But Elisha sat in his house and the elders sat with him and the king sent a man from before him but ere the messenger came to him he said to the elders See ye how this son of a murderer hath sent to take away mine head look when the messenger cometh shut the door and hold him fast at the door is not the sound of his masters feet behinde him 33 And while he yet talked with them behold the messenger came down unto him and he said Behold
polished scattered and pâ—eled to a people terrible from their beginning hitherto ‖ Or a nation that metest out and treadeth down †Heb. a nation of line line and treading under foot a nation meted out and troden down ‖ Or whose land the rivers despist whose land the rivers have spoiled 3 All ye inhabitants of the world and dwellers on the earth see ye when he lifteth up an ensigne on the mountains and when he bloweth a trumpet hear ye 4 For so the LORD said unto me I will take my rest and I will consider in my dwelling-place like a clear heat ‖ Or regard my set dwelling upon herbs and like a cloud of dew in the heat of harvest 5 For afore the harvest when the bud is perfect and the sowre grape is ripening in the flower he shall both cut off the sprâ—gs with pruning-houks and take away and cut down the branches 6 They shall be left together unto the fowls of the mountains and to the beasts of the earth and the fowls shall summer upon them and all the beasts of the earth shall winter upon them 7 ¶ In that time shall the present be brought unto the LORD of hosts of a people ‖ Or after rain scattered and peeled and from a people terrible from their beginning hitherto a nation meted out and troden under foot ‖ Or out-spread and polished whole land the rivers have spotled to the place of the name of the LORD of hosts the mount Zion CHAP. XIX 1 The confusion of Egypt 11 The foolishness of their princes 18 The calling of Egypt to the church 23 The covenant of Egypt Aâ—â—â—ria Israel THe burden of Egypt Behold the LORD rideth upon a swift cloud and shall come into Egypt and the idols of Egypt shall be moved at his presence and the heart of Egypt shall melt in the midst of it 2 And I will †Heb. mingle set the Egyptians against the Egyptians and they shall fight every one against his brother and every one against his neighbour city against city and kingdom against kingdom 3 And the spirit of Egypt †Heb. shall be emptied shall fail in the midst thereof and I will †Heb. swallow up destroy the counsel thereof and they shall seek to the idols to the charmers and to them that have familiar spirits and to the wizards 4 And the Egyptians will I ‖ Or shut up give over into the hand of a cruel lord and a fierce king shall rule over them saith the Lord the LORD of hosts 5 And the waters shall fail from the sea and the river shall be wasted and dried up 6 And they shall turn the rivers far away and the brooks of defence shall be emptied and dried up the reeds and flags shall wither 7 The paper-reeds by the brooks by the mouth of the brooks and every thing sown by the brooks shall wither be driven away †Heb. aâ—â— shall not be and be no more 8 The fishers also shall mourn and all they that cast angle into the brooks shall lament and they that spread nets upon the waters shall languish 9 Moreover they that work in fine flax and they that weave ‖ Or white works net-works shall be confounded 10 And they shall be broken in the †Heb. foundations purposes thereof all that make sluces and ponds †Heb. of â—â—at 〈…〉 for fish 11 ¶ Surely the princes of Zoan are foâ—ls the counsel of the wise counsellours of Pharaoh is become brutish how say ye unto Pharaoh I am the son of the wise the son of ancient kings 12 Where are they where are thy wise men and let them tell thee now and let them know what the LORD of hosts hath purposed upon Egypt 13 The princes of Zoan are become fools the princes of Noph are deceived they have also seduced Egypt even ‖ Or governours †Heb. corners they that are the stay of the tribes thereof 14 The LORD hath mingled †Heb. a spirit of â—â—â—versities a perverse spirit in the midst thereof and they have caused Egyp to err in every work thereof as a drunken man staggereth in his vomit 15 Neither shall there be any work for Egypt which the head or tail branch or rush may do 16 In that day shall Egypt be like unto women and it shall be afraid and fear because of the shaking of the hand of the LORD of hosts which he shaketh over it 17 And the land of Judah shall be a terrour unto Egypt every one that maketh mention thereof shall be afraid in himself because of the counsel of the LORD of hosts which he hath determined against it 18 ¶ In that day shall five cities in the land of Egypt speak †Heb. 〈◊〉 lip the language of Canaan and swear to the LORD of hosts one shall be called the city ‖ Or of Hâ—res or of the 〈◊〉 of destruction 19 In that day shall there be an altar to the LORD in the midst of the land of Egypt and a pillar at the border thereof to the LORD 20 And it shall be for a signâ— and for a witness unto the LORD of hosts in the land of Egypt for they shall cry unto the LORD because of the oppressours and he shall send them a saviour and a great one and he shall deliver them 21 And the LORD shall be known to Egypt and the Egyptians shall know the LORD in that day and shall do sacrifice and oblation yea they shall vow a vow unto the LORD and perform it 22 And the LORD shall smite Egypt he shall smite and heal it and they shall return even to the LORD and he shall be intreated of them and shall heal them 23 ¶ In that dry shall there be a high-way out of Egypt to Assyria and the Assyrian shall come into Egypt and the Egyptian into Assyria and the Egyptians shall serve with the Assyrians 24 In that day shall Israel be the third with Egypt and with Assyria even a blessing in the midst of the land 25 Whom the LORD of host shall bless saying Blessed be Egypt my people and Assyria the work of my hands and Israel mine inheritance CHAP. XX. A type prefiguring the shameful captivity of Egypt and Ethiopia IN the year that Tartan came unto Ashdod when Sargon the king of Assyria sent him and fought against Ashdod and took it 2 At the same time spake the LORD †Heb. by the hand of Isaiâ—â— by Isaiah the son of Amoz saying Go and loose the sackcloth from off thy loyns and put off thy shoe from thy foot And he did so walking naked and bare-foot 3 And the LORD said Like as my servant Isaiah hath walked naked and bare-foot three years for a signe and wonder upon Egypt and upon Ethiopia 4 So shall the king of Assyria lead away †Heb. the captivity of Egypt the Egyptians prisoners and

III. 1 The necesâ—itâ— of Gods judgement against Israel 9 The publication of it with the causes thereof HEar this word that the LORD hath spoken against you O children of Israel against the whole family which I brought up from the land of Egypt saying 2 You onely have I known of all the families of the earth therefore I will †Heb. visit upon punish you for all your iniquities 3 Can two walk together except they be agreed 4 Will a lion roar in the forest when he hath no prey will a young lion †Heb. give forth his voice cry out of his den if he have taken nothing 5 Can a bird fall in a snare upon the earth where no gin is for him shall one take up a snare from the earth and have taken nothing at all 6 Shall a trumpet be blown in the city and the people ‖ Or not â—â—iâ— together not be afraid shall there be evil in a city ‖ Or and shall not the LORD do somewhat and the LORD hath not done it 7 Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets 8 The lion hath roared who will not fear the Lord GOD hath spoken who can but prophesie 9 ¶ Publish in the palaces at Ashdod and in the palaces in the land of Egypt and say Assemble your selves upon the mountains of Samaria and behold the great tumults in the midst thereof and the ‖ Or oppressions oppressed in the midst thereof 10 For they know not to do right saith the LORD who store up violence and ‖ Or spoil robbery in their palaces 11 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD An adversary there shall be even round about the land and he shall bring down thy strength from thee and thy palaces shall be spoiled 12 Thus saith the LORD As the shepherd †Heb. delivereth taketh out of the mouth of the lion two legs or a piece of an ear so shall the children of Israel be taken out that dwell in Samaria in the corner of abed and
But the people were very thirsty and compelled us to do unto them as we have spoken and to bring an oath upon our selves which we will not break 31 Therefore now pray thou for us because thou art a godly woman and the Lord will send us rain to fill our cisterns and we shall faint no more 32 Then said Judith unto them Hear me and I will do a thing which shall go throughout all generations to the children of our nation 33 You shall stand this night in the gate and I will go forth with my waiting-woman and within the days that you have promised to deliver the city to our enemies the Lord will visit Israel by mine hand 34 But enquire not you of mine act for I will not declare it unto you till the things be finished that I do 35 Then said Ozias and the princes unto her Go in peace and the Lord God be before thee to take vengeance on our enemies 36 So they returned from the tent and went to their wards CHAP. IX 1 Judith humbleth her self 2 and prayeth God to prosper her purpose against the enemies of his sanctuary THen Judith fell upon her face and put ashes upon her head and uncovered the sackcloth wherewith she was clothed and about the time that the incense of that evening was offered in Jerusalem in the house of the Lord Judith cried with a loud voice and said 2 O Lord God of my Father * Gen. 34.2 25. healed 8 For I also am a man set under authority having under me souldiers and I say unto one Go and he goeth and to another Come and he cometh and to my servant Do this and he doeth it 9 When Jesus heard these things he marvelled at him and turned him about and said unto the people that followed him I say unto you I have not found so great faith no not in Israel 10 And they that were sent returning to the house found the servant whole that had been sick 11 ¶ And it came to pass the day after that he went into a city called Nain and many of his disciples went with him and much people 12 Now when he came nigh to the gate of the city behold there was a dead man carried out the onely son of his mother and she was a widow and much people of the city was with her 13 And when the Lord saw her he had compassion on her and said unto her Weep not 14 And he came and touched the ‖ Or coffin biere and they that bare him stood still and he said Young man I say unto thee Arise 15 And he that was dead sat up and began to speak and he delivered him to his mother 16 And there came a fear on all and they glorified God saying That a great prophet is risen up among us and That God hath visited his people 17 And this rumour of him went forth throughout all Judea and throughout all the region round about 18 * Matth. 11.2 And the disciples of John shewed him of all these things 19 ¶ And John calling unto him two of his disciples sent them unto Jesus saying Art thou he that should come or look we for another 20 When the men were come unto him they said John Baptist hath sent us unto thee saying Art thou he that should come or look we for another 21 And in that same hour he cured many of their infirmities and plagues and of evil spirits and unto many that were blinde he gave sight 22 Then Jesus answering said unto them Go your way and tell John what things ye have seen and heard how that the blinde see the lame walk the lepers are cleansed the deaf hear the dead are raised to the poor the gospel is preached 23 And blessed is he whosoever shall not be offended in me 24 ¶ And when the messengers of John were departed he began to speak unto the people concerning John What went ye out into the wilderness for to see A reed shaken with the wind 25 But what went ye out for to see A man clothed in soft raiment Behold they which are gorgeously apparelled and live delicately are in kings courts 26 But what went ye out for to see A prophet Yea I say unto you and much more then a prophet 27 This is he of whom it is written Behold I send my messenger before thy face which shall prepare thy way before thee 28 For I say unto you Among those that are born of women there is not a greater prophet then John the Baptist but he that is least in the kingdom of God is greater then he 29 And all the people that heard him and the publicans justified God being baptized with the baptism of John 30 But the Pharisees and lawyers ‖ Or frustrated rejected the counsel of God ‖ Or within themselves against themselves being not baptized of him 31 ¶ And the Lord said * Mat. 11.16 Whereunto then shall I liken the men of this generation and to what are they like 32 They are like unto children sitting in the market-place and calling one to another and saying We have piped unto you and ye have not danced we have mourned to you and ye have not wept 33 For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine and ye say He hath a devil 34 The Son of man is come eating and drinking and ye say Behold a gluttonous man and a wine bibber a friend of publicans and sinners 35 But wisdom is justified of all her children 36 ¶ * Mark â—4 3 And one of the Pharisees desired him that he would eat with him And he went into the Pharisee's house and sat down to meat 37 And behold a woman in the city which was a sinner when she knew that Jesus sat at meat in the Pharisee's house brought an alabaster-box of ointment 38 And stood at his feet behinde him weeping and began to wash his feet with tears and did wipe them with the hairs of her head and kissed his feet and anointed them with the ointment 39 Now when the Pharisee which had bidden him saw it he spake within himself saying This man if he were a prophet would have known who and what manner of woman this is that toucheth him for for she is a sinner 40 And Jesus answering said unto him Simon I have somewhat to say unto thee And he saith Master say on 41 There was a certain creditour which had two debters the one ought five hundred ‖ See Mat. â—8 23. pence and the other fist 42 And when they had nothing to pay he frankly forgave them both Tell me therefore which of them will love him most 43 Simon answered and said I suppose that he to whom he forgave most And he said unto him Thou hast rightly judged 44 And he turned to the woman and said unto Simon Seest thou this woman I entred into thine house thou gavest me no water for my feet but she hath washed my feet with tears and wiped them with the hairs of her head 45 Thou gavest me no kiss but this woman since the time I came in hath not ceased to kiss my feet 46 Mine head with oyl thou didst not anoint but this woman hath anointed my feet with ointment 47 Wherefore I say unto thee Her sins which are many are forgiven for she loved much but to whom little is forgiven the same loveth little 48 And he said unto her Thy sins are forgiven 49 And they that sat at meat with him began to say within themselves Who is this that forgiveth sins also 50 And he said to the woman Thy faith hath saved thee go in peace CHAP. VIII 1 Women minister unto Christ of their substance 4 Christ after he had preached from place

XX. 1 Mary cometh to the sepulchre 3 so do Peter and John ignorant of the resurrection 11 Jesus appeareth to Mary Magdalene 19 and to his disciples 24 The incredulity and confession of Thomas 30 The scripture is sufficient to salvation THe * Mat. 28.1 Mar. 16.1 first day of the week cometh Mary Magdalene early when it was yet dark unto the sepulchre and seeth the stone taken away from the sepulchre 2 Then she runneth and cometh to Simon Peter and to the * Chr. 13.23 21.20 other disciple whom Jesus loved and saith unto them They have taken away the Lord out of the sepulchre and we know not where they have laid him 3 Peter therefore went forth and that other disciple and came to the sepulchre 4 So they ran both together and the other disciple did outrun Peter and came first to the sepulchre 5 And he stooping down and looking in saw the linen clothes lying yet went he not in 6 Then cometh Simon Peter following him and went into the sepulchre and seeth the linen clothes lie 7 And the napkin that was about his head not lying with the linen clothes but wrapped together in a place by it self 8 Then went in also that other disciple which came first to the sepulchre and he saw and beleeved 9 For as yet they knew not the scripture that he must rise again from the dead 10 Then the disciples went away again unto their own home 11 ¶ But Mary stood without at the sepulchre weeping and as she wept she stooped down and looked into the sepulchre 12 And seeth two angels in white sitting the one at the head and the other at the feet where the body of Jesus had layen 13 And they say unto her Woman why weepest thou She saith unto them Because they have taken away my Lord and I know not where they have said him 14 And when she had thus said she turned her self back and saw Jesus standing and knew not that it was Jesus 15 Jesus saith unto her Woman why weepest thou whom seekest thou she supposing him to be the gardener saith unto him Sir if thou have born him hence tell me where thou hast â—aid him and I will take him away 16 Jesus saith unto her Mary She turned her self and saith unto him Rabboni which is to say Master 17 Jesus saith unto her Touch me not for I am not yet ascended to my Father but go to my brethren and say unto them I ascend unto my Father and your Father and to my God and your God 18 Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord and that he had spoken these things unto her 19 ¶ * Mar. 16.14 Then the same day at evening being the first day of the week when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews came Jesus and stood in the midst and saith unto them Peace be unto you 20 And when he had so said he shewed unto them his hands and his side Then were the disciples glad when they saw the Lord. 21 Then said Jesus to them again Peace be unto you as my Father hath sent me even so send I you 22 And when he had said this he breathed on them and saith unto them Receive ye the holy Ghost 23 * Mat. 18.18 Whos 's soever sins ye remit they are remitted unto them and whose soever sins ye retain they are retained 24 ¶ But Thomas one of the twelve called Didymus was not with them when Jesus came 25 The other disciples therefore said unto him We have seen the Lord. But he said unto them Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails and put my finger into the print of the nails and thrust my hand into his side I will not beleeve 26 ¶ And after eight days again his disciples were within and Thomas with them then came Jesus the doors being shut and stood in the midst and said Peace be unto you 27 Then saith he to Thomas Reach hither thy finger and behold my hands and reach hither thy hand and thrust it into my side and be not faithless but beleeving 28 And Thomas answered and said unto him My Lord and my God 29 Jesus saith unto him Thomas because thou hast seen me thou hast beleeved blessed are they that have not seen and yet have beleeved 30 ¶ * Chap. 21.25 And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples which are not written in this book 31 But these are written that ye might beleeve that Jesus is the Christ the Son of God and that beleeving ye might have life through his name CHAP. XXI 1 christ appearing again to his disciples was known of them by the great draught of fishes 12 He dineth with them 15 earnestly commandeth Peter to seed his lambs and sheep 18 foretelleth him of his death 32 rebuketh his curiosity touching John 25 The conclusion AFter these things Jesus shewed himself again to the disciples at the sea of Tiberias and on this wife shewed he himself 2 There were together Simon Peter and Thomas called Didymus and Nathanael of Cana in Galilee and the sons of Zebedee and two other of his disciples 3 Simon Peter saith unto them I go a fishing They say unto him We also go with thee They went forth and entred into a ship immediately and that night they caught nothing 4 But when the morning was now come Jesus stood on the shore but the disciples knew not that it was Jesus 5 Then Jesus saith unto them ‖ Or Sâ—rs Children have ye any meat They answered him No. 6 And he said unto them Cast the net on the right side of the ship and ye shall finde They cast therefore and now they were not able to draw it for the multitude of fishes 7 Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved saith unto Peter It is the Lord. VIII 1 At the opening of the seventh seal 2 seven angels had seven trumpets given them 6 Four of them sound their trumpets and great plagues follow 3 Another angel putteth incense to the prayers of the saints on the golden altar ANd when he had opened the seventh seal there was silence in heaven about the space of half an hour 2 And I saw the seven angels which stood before God and to them were given seven trumpets 3 And another angel came and stood at the alter having a golden censer and there was given unto him much incense that he should ‖ Or add it to the prayâ—â—â— offer it with the prayers of all saints upon the golden altar which was before the throne 4 And the smoke of the incense which came with the prayers of the saints ascended up before God out of the angels hand 5 And the angel took the censer and filled it with fire of the altar and cast it into the earth and there were voices and thundrings and lightnings and an earthquake 6 And the seven angels which had the seven trumpets prepared themselves to sound 7 The first angel sounded and there followed hail and fire mingled with bloud and they were cast upon the earth and the third part of trees was burnt up and all green grass was burnt up 8 And the second angel sounded and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea and the third part of the sea became bloud 9 And the third part of the creatures which were in the sea and had life died and the third part of the ships were destroyed 10 And the third angel sounded and there fell a great star from heaven burning as it were a lamp and it fell upon the third part of the rivers and upon the fountains of waters 11 And the name of the star is called Woormwood and the third part of the waters became woormwood and many men died of the waters because they were made bitter 12 And the fourth angel sounded and the third part of the sun was smitten and the third part of the moon and the third part of the stars so as the third part of them was darkned and the day shone not for a third part of it and the night likewise 13 And I behold and heard an angel flying through the midst of heaven saying with a loud voice Wo wo wo to the inhabiters of the earth by reason of the other voices of the trumpet of the three angels which are yet to sound CHAP. IX 1 At the sounding of the fifth angel a star falleth from heaven to whom is given the key of the bottomless pit 2 He openeth the pit and there come forth locusts like scorpions 12 The first wo past 13 The sixth trumpet soundeth 14 Four angels are let loose that were bound ANd the fifth angel sounded and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit 2 And he opened the bottomless pit and there arose a smoke out of the pit as the smoke of a great furnace and the sun and the air were darkned by reason of the smoke of the pit 3 And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth and unto them was given power as the sâ—orpions of the earth have power 4 And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth neither any green thing neither any tree but onely those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads 5 And to them it was given that they should not kill them but that they should be tormented five moneths and their torment was as the torment of a scorpion when he striketh a man 6 And in those days * Isa 2 1â— Chap. 6.16 shall men seek death and shall not finde it and shall desire to die and death shall flee from them 7 And the shapes of the locusts were like unto horses prepared unto battel and on their heads were as it were crowns like Gold and their faces were as the faces of men 8 And they had hair as the hair of women and their teeth were as the teeth of lions 9 And they had breastplates as it were breastplates of iron and the sound of their wings was as the sound of chariots of many horses running to battel 10 And they had tails like unto scorpions and there were stings in their tails and their power was to hurt men five moneths 11 And they had a king over them which is the angel of the bottomless pit whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon but in the Greek tongue hath his name ‖ That is to say a destroyer Apollyon 12 One wo is past and behold there come two woes more hereafter 13 And the sixth angel sounded and I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar which is before God 14 Saying to the sixth angel which had the trumpet Loose the four angels which are bound in the great river Euphrates 15 And the four angels were loosed which were prepared ‖ Or at for an hour and a day and a moneth and a year for to slay the third part of men 16 And the number of the army of the hors-men were two hundred thousand thousand and I heard the number of them 17 And thus I saw the horses in the vision and them that sat on them having breast-plates of fire and of jacinct and brimstone and the heads of the horses were as the heads of lions and out of their mouths issued fire and smoke and brimstone 18 By these three was the third part of men killed by the fire and by the smoke and by the brimstone which issued out of their mouths 19 For their power is in their mouth and in their tails for their tails were like unto serpents and had heads and with them they do hurt 20 And the rest of the men which were not killed by these plagues yet repented not of the works of their hands that they should not worship devils * Psal 115.4 and 135. â—5 and idols of gold and silver and brass and stone and of wood which neither can see nor hear nor walk 21 Neither repented they of their murders nor of their sorceries nor of their fornication nor of their thefts CHAP. X. A mighty strong angel appeareth with a book open in his hand 6 He sweareth by him that liveth for ever that there shall be no more time 9 John is commanded to take and eat the book ANd I saw another mighty angel come down from heaven clothed with a cloud and a rainbowe was upon his head and his face was as it were the sun and his feet as pillars of fire 2 And he had in his hand a little book open and he set his right foot upon the sea and his left foot on the earth 3 And cried with a loud voice as when a lion
roareth and when he had cried seven thunders uttered their voices 4 And when the seven thunders had uttered their voices I was about to write and I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me Seal up those things which the seven thunders uttered and write them not 5 And the angel which I saw stand upon the sea and upon the earth * Dan. 12.7 lifted up his hand to heaven 6 And sware by him that liveth for ever and ever who created heaven and the things that therein are and the earth and the things that therein are and the sea and the things which are therein that there should be time no longer 7 But in the days of the voice of the seventh angel when he shall begin to sound the mystery of God should be finished as he hath declared to his servants the prophets 8 And the voice which I heard from heaven spake unto me again and said Go and take the little book which is open in the hand of the angel which standeth upon the sea and upon the earth 9 And I went unto the angel and said unto him Give me the little book And he said unto me * Ezek. 2.8 and 3.3 Take it and eat it up and it shall make thy belly bitter but it shall be in thy mouth sweet as honey 10 And I took the little book out of the angels hand and ate it up and it was in my mouth sweet as honey and assâ—on as I had eaten it my belly was bitter 11 And he said unto me Thou must prophesie again before many peoples and nations and tongues and kings CHAP. XI 3 The two witnesses prophesie 6 They have power to shut heaven that it ram not 7 The beast shall fight against them and kill them 8 They lie unburied 11 and after three days and an half rise again 14 The second wo is past 15 The seventh trumpet soundeth ANd there was given me a reed like unto a rod and the angel stood saying Rise and measure the temple of God and the altar and them that worship therein 2 But the court which is without the temple †Gr. cast out leave out and measure it not for it is given unto the Gentiles and the holy city shall they tread under foot fourty and two moneths 3 And ‖ Or I will give unto my two witnesses that they may prophesie I will give power unto my two witnesses and they shall prophesie a thousand two hundred and threescore days clothed in sackcloth 4 These are the * Zech. 4.3.11.14 two olive trees and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth 5 And if any man will hurt them fire proceedeth out of their mouth and devoureth their enemies and if any man will hurt them he must in this manner be killed 6 These have power to shut heaven that it rain not in the days of their prophesie and have power over waters to turn them to bloud and to smite the earth with all plagues as often as they will 7 And when they shall have finished their testimony the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them and shall overcome them and kill them 8 And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt where also our Lord was crucified 9 And they of the people and kindreds and tongues and nations shall see their dead bodies three days and an hall and shall not suffer their dead bodies to be put in graves 10 And they that dwell upon the earn shall rejoyce over them and make merry and shall send gifts one to another because these two prophets tormented them that dwelt on the earth 11 And after three days and an half the Spirit of life from God entred into them and they stood upon their feet and great fear fell upon them which saw them 12 And they heard a great voice from heaven saying unto them Come up hither And they ascended up to heaven in a cloud and their enemies beheld them 13 And the same hour was there a great earthquake and the tenth part of the city fell and in the earthquake ware slain †Gr. names of men of men seven thousand and the remnant were affrighted and gave glory to the God of heaven 14 The second wo is past and behold the third wo cometh quickly 15 And the seventh angel sounded and there were great voices in heaven saying The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord and of his Christ and he shall reign for ever and ever 16 And the four and twenty elders which sat before God on their seats fell upon their faces and worshipped God 17 Saying We give thee thanks O Lord God Almighty which art and wast and art to come because thou hast taken to thee thy great power and hast reigned 18 And the nations were angry and thy wrath is come and the time of the dead that they should be judged and that thou shouldest give reward unto thy servants the prophets and to the saints and them that fear thy name small and great and shouldest destroy them which ‖ Or corrupt destroy the earth 19 And the temple of God was opened in heaven and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament and there were lightnings and voices and thundrings and an earthquake and great hail CHAP. XII 1 A woman clothed with the sun travaileth 4 The great red dragon standeth before her ready to devour her childe 6 when she was delivered she fleeth into the wilderness 7 Michael and his angels fight with the dragon and prevail 13 The dragon being cast down into the earth persecuteth the woman ANd there appeared a great ‖ Or signe wonder in heaven a woman clothed with the sun and the moon under her feet and upon her head a crown of twelve stars 2 And she being with childe cried travailing in birth and pained to be delivered 3 And there appeared another ‖ Or signe wonder in heaven and behold a great red dragon having seven heads and ten horns and seven crowns upon his heads 4 And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven and did cast them to the earth and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered for to devour her childe assoon as it was born 5 And she brought forth a man-childe who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron and her childe was caught up unto God and to his throne 6 And the woman fled into the wilderness where she hath a place prepared of God that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days 7 And there was war in heaven Michael and his angels fought against the dragon and the dragon fought and his angels 8 And prevailed not neither was there place found any more in heaven 9 And the great dragon was cast out that

XVII 3 4 A woman arayed in purple and scarlet with a golden cup in her band sitteth upon the beast 5 which is great Babylon the mother of all abominations 9 The interpretation of the seven heads 12 and the ten horns 14 The victory of the Lamb. 16 The punishment of the whore ANd there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials and talked with me saying unto me Come hither I will shew unto thee the judgement of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters 2 With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication and the inhabiters of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication 3 So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet-coloured beast full of names of blasphemy having seven heads and ten horns 4 And the woman was arayed in purple and scarlet colour †Gr. guilded decked with gold and precious stone and pearls having a golden cup in her hand full or abominations and silthiness of her fornication 5 And upon her forehead was a name written MYSTERY BABYLON THE GREAT THE MOTHER OF ‖ Or fornications HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH 6 And I saw the woman drunken with the bloud of the saints and with the bloud of the martyrs of Jesus and when I saw her I wondred with great admitation 7 And the angel said unto me Wherefore didst thou marvel I will tell thee the mystery of the woman and of the beast that carrieth her which hath the seven heads and ten horns 8 The beast that thou sawest was and is not and shall ascend out of the bottom less pit and go into perdition and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world when they behold the beast that was and is not and yet is 9 And here is the minde which hath wisdom The seven heads are seven mountains on which the woman sitteth 10 And there are seven kings five are fain and one is and the other is not yet come and when he cometh he must continue a short space 11 And the beast that was and is not even he is the eighth and is of the seven and goeth into perdition 12 And the ten horns which thou sawest are ten kings which have received no kingdom as yet but receive power as kings one hour with the beast 13 These have one minde and shall give their power and strength unto the beast 14 These shall make war with the Lamb and the Lamb shall overcome them * 1 Tim. 6.15 Chap. 19 16 for he is Lord of lords and King of kings and they that are with him are called and chosen and faithful 15 And he saith unto me The waters which thou sawest where the whore sitteth are peoples and multitudes and nations and tongues 16 And the ten horns which thou sawest upon the beast these shall hate the whore and shall make her desolate and naked and shall eat her flesh and burn her with fire 17 For God hath put in their hearts to fulfil his will and to agree and give their kingdom unto the beast until the words of God shall be fulfilled 18 And the woman which thou sawest is that great city which reigneth over the kings of the earth CHAP. XVIII 2 Babylon is faln 4 The people of God commanded to depart out of her 9 The kings of the earth 11 with the merchants and mariners lament over her 20 The saints rejoyce for the judgements of God upon her ANd after these things I saw another angel come down from heaven having great power and the earth was lightned with his glory 2 And he cried mightily with a strong voice saying * Cha. 14.8 Babylon the great is fain is fain and is become the habitation of devils and the hold of every foul spirit and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird 3 For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her and the merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the ‖ Or power abundance of her delicacies 4 And I heard another voice from heaven saying * Jer. 51.6 Come out of her my people that ye be not partakers of her sins and that ye receive not of her plagues 5 For her sins have reached unto heaven and God hath remembred her iniquities 6 Reward her even as she rewarded you and double unto her double according to her works in the cup which she hath filled fill to her double 7 How much she hath glorified her self and lived deliciously so much torment and sorrow give her for she saith in her heart I sit a * Isa 47.8 queen and am no widow and shall see no sorrow 8 Therefore shall her plagues come in one day death and mourning and samine and she shall be utterly burnt with fire for strong is the Lord God who judgeth her 9 And the kings of the earth who have committed fornication and lived deliciously with her * Ezek. 26. â—7 shall bewail her and lament for her when they shall see the smoke of her burning 10 Standing afar off for the fear of her torment saying Alas alas that great city Babylon that mighty city for in one hour is thy judgement come 11 And the merchants of the earth shall weep and mourn over her for no man buyeth * Ezek. 27.27 her merchandise any more 12 The merchandise of gold and silver and precious stones and of pearls and fine linen and purple and silk and scarlet and all ‖ Or sweet thyine wood and all manner vessels of ivory and all manner vessels of most precious wood and of brass and iron and marble 13 And cinnamon and odours and ointments and frankincense and wine and oyl and fine flour and wheat and beasts and sheep and horses and chariots and ‖ Or. bodies slaves and souls of men 14 And the fruits that thy soul lusted after are departed from thee and all things which were dainty and goodly are dâ—parted from thee and thou shalt finde them no more at all 15 The merchants of these things which were made rich by her shall stand afar off for the fear of her torment weeping and wailing 16 And saying Alas alas that great city that was clothed in fine linen and purple and searlet and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls 17 For in one
their names Samaria is Aholah and Jerusalem Aholibah 5 And Aholah played the harlot when she was mine and the doted on her lovers on the Assyrians her neighbours 6 Which were clothed with blue captains and rulers all of them desirable young men hors-men riding upon horses 7 Thus she †Heb. beâ—owed her whâ—redoms upon them committed her whoredoms with them with all them that were †Heb. the â—â—oiâ—â— of the children of Ashur the chosen men of Assyria and with all on whom she doted with all their idols she desiled her self 8 Neither left she her whoredoms brought from Egypt for in her youth they lay with her and they bruised the breasts of her virginity and poured their whoredom upon her 9 Wherefore I have delivered her into the hand of her lovers into the hand of the * 2 King 1â— 23 Assyrians upon whom she doted 10 These discovered her nakedness they took her sons and her daughters and slew her with the sword and she became †Heb. 〈◊〉 name famous among women for they had executed judgement upon her 11 And when her sister Aholibah saw this †Heb. she corrupted her inordinate love more then c. she was more corrupt in her inordinate love then she and in her whoredoms †Heb. mâ—re then the whoredoms after sister more then her sister in her whoredoms 12 She doted upon the * 2 King 16.7 Assyrians her neighbours captains and rulers clothed most gorgeously hors-men riding upon horses all of them desirable young men 13 Then I saw that she was desiled that they took both one way 14 And that she increased her whoredoms for when she saw men pourtrayed upon the wall the images of the Caldeans pourtrayed with vermilion 15 Girded with girdles upon their loyns exceeding in died attire upon their heads all of them princes to look to after the manner of the Babylonians of Caldea the land of their nativity 16 And †Heb. at the sicke of her eyes assoon as she saw them with her eyes she doted upon them and sent messengers unto them into Caldea 17 And the †Heb. children of Baâ—el Babylonians came to her into the bed of love and they defiled her with their whoredom and she was polluted with them and her minde was †Heb. 〈◊〉 sed or diâ—â—â—nted alienated from them 18 So she discovered her whoredoms and discovered her nakedness then my minde was alienated from her like as my minde was alienated from her sister 19 Yet she multiplied her whoredoms in calling to remembrance the days of her youth wherein she had played the harlot in the land of Egypt 20 For she doted upon their paramours whole flesh is as the flesh of asses and whose issue is like the issue of horses 21 Thus thou calledst to remembrance the lewdness of thy youth in bruising thy teats by the Egyptians for the paps of thy youth 22 ¶ Therefore O Aholihah thus saith the Lord GOD Behold I will raise up thy lovers against thee from whom thy minde is alienated and I will bring them against thee on every side 23 The Babylonians and all the Caldeans Pekod and Shoa and Kea and all the Assyrians with them all of them desirable young men captains and rulers great lords and renowned all of them riding upon horses 24 And they shall come against thee with chariots wagons wheels and with an assembly of people which shall set against thee buckler and shield and helmet round about and I will set judgement before them and they shall judge thee according to their judgements 25 And I will set my jealousie against thee and the shall deal furiously with thee they shall take away thy nose and thine eats and thy remnant shall fall by the sword they shall take thy sons and thy daughters and thy residue shall be devoured by the fire 26 They shall also strip thee out of thy clothes and take away thy †Heb. inâ—â—ruments of thy decking fair jewels 27 Thus will I make thy lewdness to cease from thee and thy whoredom brought from the land of Egypt so that thou shalt not lift up thine eyes unto them nor remember Egypt any more 28 For thus saith the Lord GOD Behold I will deliver thee into the hand of them whom thou hatest into the hand of them from whom thy minde is alienated 29 And they shall deal with thee hatefully and shall take away all thy labour and shall leave thee naked and bare and the nakedness of thy whoredoms shall be discovered both thy lewdness and thy whoredoms 30 I will do these things unto thee because thou hast gone a whoring after the heathen and because thou art poiluted with their idols 31 Thou hast walked in the way of thy sister therefore will I give her cup into thine hand 32 Thus saith the Lord GOD Thou shalt drink of thy sisters cup deep and large thou shalt be laughed to scorn and had in derision it containeth much 33 Thou shalt be filled with drunkenness and sorrow with the cup of astonishment and desolation with the cup of thy sister Samaria 34 Thou shalt even drink it and suck it out and thou shalt break the sherds thereof and pluck off thine own breasts for I have spoken it saith the Lord GOD. 35 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD Because thou hast forgotten me and cast me behinde thy back therefore bear thou also thy lewdness and thy whoredoms 36 ¶ The LORD said moreover unto me Son of man wilt thou * Ch. 20.4 22.2 ‖ Or plead for judge Aholah and Aholibah yea declare unto them their abominations 37 That they have committed adultery and bloud is in their hands and with their idols have they committed adultery and have also caused their sons whom they bare unto me to pass for them through the fire to devour them 38 Moreover this they have done unto me they have defiled my sanctuary in the same day and have profaned my sabbaths 39 For when they had slain their children to their idols then they came the same day into my sanctuary to profane it and lo * 2 King 21.4 thus have they done in the midst of mine house 40 And furthermore that ye have sent for men †Heb. coming to come from far unto whom a messenger was sent and lo they came for whom thou didst wash thy self paintedst thy eyes and deckedst thy self with ornaments 41 And satest upon a †Heb. honourable stately bed and a table prepared before it * Prov. 7.17 whereupon thou hast set mine incense and mine oyl 42 And a voice of a multitude being at ease was with her and with the men †Heb. of the multitude of men of the common sort were brought ‖ Or drunkards Sabeans from the wilderness which put bracelets upon their hands and beautiful crowns upon their heads 43 Then said I unto her that was old in adulteries Will they
now commit †Heb. her whoredoms whoredoms with her and she with them 44 Yet they went in unto her as they go in unto a woman that playeth the harlot so went they in unto Aholah and unto Aholibah the lewd women 45 ¶ And the righteous men they shall * Ch. 16.38 judge them after the manner of adulteresses and after the manner of women that shed bloud because they are adulteresses and bloud is in their hands 46 For thus saith the Lord GOD I will bring up a company upon them and will give them †Heb. for a removing and spoil to be removed and spoiled 47 And the company shall stone them with stones and ‖ Or â—inele them out dispatch them with their swords they shall slay their sons and their daughters and burn up their houses with fire 48 Thus will I cause lewdness to cease out of the land that all women may be taught not to do after your lewdness 49 And they shall recompense your lewdness upon you and ye shall bear the sins of your idols and ye shall know that I am the Lord GOD. CHAP. XXIV 1Vnder the parable of a boâ—ling pot â—is shewed the irrevocable destruction of Jerusalem 15 By the signe of Ezekiel not mourning for the death of his wife 19 〈◊〉 shewed the calamity of the Jews to be beyond all sorrow AGain in the ninth year in the tenth moneth in the tenth day of the moneth the word of the LORD came unto me saying 2 Son of man write thee the name of the day even of this same day the king of Babylon set himself against Jerusalem this same day 3 And utter a parable unto the rebellious house and say unto them Thus saith the Lord GOD Set on a pot set it on and also pour water into it 4 Gather the pieces thereof into it even every good piece the thigh and the shoulder fill it with the choice bones 5 Take the choice of the flock and ‖ Or beaâ— burn also the bones under it and make it boyl well and let them seethe the bones of it therein 6 ¶ Wherefore thus saith the Lord GOD Wo to the bloudy city to the pot whose seum is therein and whose scum is not gone out of it bring it out piece by piece let no lot fall upon it 7 For her bloud is in the midst of her she set it upon the top of a rock she poured it not upon the ground to cover it with dust 8 That it might cause sury to come up to take vengeance I have set her bloud upon the top of a rock that it should not be covered 9 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD * Nah. 3.1 Hab. 2.12 Wo to the bloudy city I will even make the pile for fire great 10 Heap on wood kindle the fire consume the flesh and spice it well and let the bones be burnt 11 Then set it empty upon the coals thereof that the brass of it may be hot and may burn and that the filthiness of it may be molten in it that the scum of it may be consumed 12 She hath wearied her self with lies and her great scum went not forth out of her her scum shall be in the fire 13 In thy filthiness is lewdness because I have purged thee and thou wast not purged thou shalt not be purged from thy filthiness any more till I have caused my fury to rest upon thee 14 I the LORD have spoken it it shall come to pass and I will do it I will not go back neither will I spare neither will I repent according to thy ways and according to thy doings shall they judge thee saith the Lord GOD. 15 ¶ Also the word of the LORD came unto me saying 16 Son of man behold I take away from thee the desire of thine eyes with a stroke yet neither shalt thou mourn nor weep neither shall thy tears †Heb. 〈◊〉 run down 17 †Heb. le sileve Forbear to cry make no mourning for the dead binde the tire of thine head upon thee and put on thy shoes upon thy feet and cover not thy †Heb. upper lip and â—over 22. lips and eat not the bread of men 18 So I spake unto the people in the morning and at even my wife died and I did in the morning as I was commanded 19 ¶ And the people said unto me Wilt thou not tell us what these things are to us that thou doest so 20 Then I answered them The word of the LORD came unto me saying 21 Speak unto the house of Israel Thus saith the Lord GOD Behold I will profane my sanctuary the excellency of your strength the desire of your eyes and †Heb. the pitâ— of your soul that which your soul pitieth and your sons and your daughters whom ye have left shall fall by the sword 22 And ye shall do as I have done ye shall not cover your lips nor eat the bread of men 23 And your tires shall be upon your heads and your shoes upon your feet ye shall not mourn nor weep but ye shall pine away for your iniquities and mourn one towards another 24 Thus Ezekiel is unto you a signe according to all that he hath done shall ye do and when this cometh ye shall know that I am the Lord GOD. 25 Also thou son of man shall it not be in the day when I take from them their strength the joy of their glory the desire of their eyes and †Heb. the listing up of their sâ—ul that whereupon they set their minds their sons and their daughters 26 That he that escapeth in that day shall come unto thee to cause thee to hear it with thine ears 27 In that day shall thy mouth be opened to him which is escaped and thou shalt speak and be no more dumb and thou shalt be a signe unto them and they shall know that I am the LORD CHAP. XXV 1 Gods venâ—eance for their insolency against the Jews upon the Ammonites 8 upon Moah and Seir 12 upon Edom 15 and upon the Philistines THe word of the LORD came again unto me saying 2 Son of man set thy face * Jer. 49.1 c. against the Ammonites and prophesie against them 3 And say unto the Ammonites Hear the word of the Lord GOD Thus saith the Lord GOD Because thou saidst Aha against my sanctuary when it was profaned and against the land of Israel when it was desolate and against the house of Judah when they went into captivity 4 Behold therefore I will deliver thee to the †Heb. children men of the east for a possession and they shall set their palaces in thee and make their dwellings in thee they shall eat thy fruit and they shall drink thy milk 5 And I will make Rabbah a stable for camels and the Ammonites a couching-place for flocks and ye shall know that I am the LORD 6 For thus saith the Lord
words surely if thou do as thou hast spoken thy God shall be my God and thou shalt dwell in the house of king Nabuchodonosor and shalt be renowned through the whole earth CHAP. XII 2 Judith will not â—at of Holofernes meat 7 She tarried three days in the camp and every night went forth to pray 13 Bagoas moveth her to be merry with Holofernes 20 who for joy of her company drunk much THen he commanded to bring her in where his plate was set and bade that they should prepare for her of his own meats and that she should drink of his own wine 2 And Judith said I * Gen. 43.32 Dan. 1.8 Tob. 1.11 will not eat thereof lest there be an offence but provision shall be made for me of the things that I have brought 3 Then Holofernes said unto her If thy provision should fail how should we give thee the like for there be none with us of thy nation 4 Then said Judith unto him As thy soul liveth my lord thine hand-maid shall not spend those things that I have before the Lord work by mine hand the things that he hath determined 5 Then the servants of Holofernes brought her into the tent and she slept till midnight and she arose when it was towards the morning watch 6 And sent to Holofernes saying Let my Lord now command that thine hand maid may go forth unto prayer 7 Then Holofernes commanded his guard that they should not stay her thus she abode in the camp three days and went out in the night into the valley of Bethulia and washed her self in a fountain of water by the camp 8 And when she came out she besought the Lord God of Israel to direct her way to the raising up of the children of her people 9 So she came in clean and remained in the lent until she did eat her meat at evening 10 And in the fourth day Holofernes made a feast to his own servants onely and called none of the officers to the banquet 11 Then said he to Bagoas the eunuch who had charge over all that he had Go now and perswade this Hebrew woman which is with thee that she come unto us and eat and drink with us 12 For lo it will be a shame for our person if we shall let such a woman go not having had her company for if we draw her not unto us she will laugh us to scorn 13 Then went Bagoas from the presence of Holofernes and came to her and he said Let not this fair damsel fear to come to my lord and to be honoured in his presence and drink wine and be merry with uâ— and be made this day as one of the daughters of the Assyrians which serve in the house of Nabuchodonosor 14 Then said Judith unto him Who am I now that I should gainsay my lord surely whatsoever pleaseth him I will do speedily and it shall be my joy unto the day of my death 15 So she arose and decked her self with her apparel and all her womans attire and her maid went and laid soft skins on the ground for her over against Holofernes which she had received of Bagoas for her daily use that she might sit and eat uâ—on them 16 Now when Judith came in and sat down Holofernes his heart was ravished with her and his minde was moved and he desired greatly her company for he waited a time to deceive her from the day that he had seen her 17 Then said Holofernes unto her Drink now and be merry with us 18 So Judith said I will drink now my lord because my life is magnified in me this day more then all the days since I was borâ— 19 Then she took and ate and drank before him what her maid had prepared 20 And Holofernes took great delight in her and drank much more wine then he had drunk at any time in one day since he was bâ—rn CHAP. XIII 2 Judith is left alone with Holofernes in his tent 4 She prayeth God to give her strength 7 She cut off his head while he slept 10 and returned with it to Bethulia 17 They saw it and commend her NOw when the evening was come his servants made haste to depart and Bagoas shut his tent without and dismissed the waiters from the presence of his lord and they went to their beds for they were all weary because the feast had been long 2 And Judith was left alone in the tent and Holofernes lying along upon his bed for he was filled with * Eccluâ— 31.20 25 wine 3 Now Judith had commanded her maid to stand without her bed-chamber and to wait for her coming forth as she did daily for she said she would go forth to her prayers and she spake to Bagoas according to the same purpose 4 So all went forth and none was left in the bed-chamber neither little nor great Then Judith standing by his bed said in her heart O Lord God of all power look at this present upon the works of mine hands for the exaltation of Jerusalem 5 For now is the time to help thine inheritance and to execute mine enterprises to the destruction of the enemies which are risen against us 6 Then she came to the pillar of the bed which was at Holofernes head and took down his fauchion from thence 7 And approached to his bed and took hold of the hair of his head and said Strengthen me O Lord God of Israel this day 8 And she smote twice upon his neck with all her might and she took away his head from him 9 And tumbled his body down from the bed and pulled down the canopy from the pillars and anon after she went forth and gave Holofernes his head to her maid 10 And she put it in her bag of meat so they twain went together according to their custom unto prayer and when they passed the camp they compassed the valley and went up the mountain of Bethulia and came to the gates thereof 11 Then said Judith afar off to the watchmen at the gate Open open now the gate God even our God is with us to shew his power yet in Jerusalem and his forces against the enemy as he hath even done this day 12 Now when the men of her city heard her voice they made haste to go down to the gate of their city and they called the elders of the city 13 And then they ran all together both small and great for it was strange unto them that she was come so they opened the gate and received them and made a fire for a light and stood round about them 14 Then she said to them with a loud voice Praise praise God praise God I say for he hath not taken away his mercy from the house of Israel but hath destroyed our enemies by mine hands this night 15 So she took the head out of the bag and shewed it and said unto them Behold the head of Holofernes the chief captain of
the army of Assur and behold the canopy wherein he did lie in his drunkenness and the Lord hath smitten him by the hand of a woman 16 As the Lord liveth who hath kept me in my way that I went my countenance hath deceived him to his destruction and yet hath he not committed sin with me to defile and shame me 17 Then all the people were wonderfully astonished and bowed themselves and worshipped God and said with one accord Blessed be thou O our God which hast this day brought to nought the enemies of thy people 18 Then said Ozias unto her O daughter blessed art thou of the most high God above all the women upon the earth and blessed be the Lord God which hath created the heavens and the earth which hath directed thee to the cutting off of the head of the chief of our enemies 19 For this thy confidence shall not depart from the heart of men which remember the power of God for ever 20 And God turn these things to thee for a perpetual praise to visit thee in good things because thou hast not spared thy life for the affliction of our nation but hast revenged our ruine walking a straight way before our God And all the people said So be it so be it CHAP. XIV 8 Achior heareth Judith shew what she had done and is cirâ—umcised 11 The bead of Holofernes is hanged up 15 He as found dead and much lamented THen said Judith unto them Hear me now my brethren and take this * 2 Mac. 15.35 head and hang it upon the highest place of your walls 2 And so soon as the morning shall appear and the sun shall come forth upon the earth take you every one his weapons and go forth every valiant man out of the city and set you a captain over them as though you would go down into the field toward the watch of the Assyrians but go not down 3 Then they shall take their armour and shall go into their camp and raise up the captains of the army of Assur and they shall run to the tent of Holofernes but shall not finde him then fear shall fall upon them and they shall flee before your face 4 So you and all that inhabit the coast of Israel shall pursue them and overthrow them as they go 5 But before you do these things call me Achior the Ammonite that he may see and know him that despised the house of Israel and that sent him to us as it were to his death 6 Then they called Achior out of the house of Ozias and when he was come and saw the head of Holofernes in a mans hand in the assembly of the people he fell down on his face and his spirit failed 7 But when they had recovered him he fell at Judiths feet and reverenced heâ— and said Blessed art thou in all the tabernacle of Juda and in all nations which hearing thy name shall be astonished 8 Now therefore tell me all the things that then hast done in these days Then Judith declared unto him in the midst of the people all that she had done from the day that she went forth until that hour she spake unto them 9 And when she had left off speaking the people shouted with a loud voice and made a joyful noise in their city 10 And when Achior had seen all that the God of Israel had done he beleeved in God greatly and circumcised the flesh of his fore-skin and was joyned unto the house of Israel unto this day 11 And assoon as the morning arose they hanged the head of Holofernes upon the wall and every man took his weapons and they went forth by bands unto the ‖ Or â—sâ—â—es straits of the mountain 12 But when the Assyrians saw them they sent to their leaders which came to their captains and tribunes and to every one of their rulers 13 So they came to Holofernes tent and said to him that had the charge of all his things Waken now our lord for the slaves have been bold to come down against us to battel that they may be utterly destroyed 14 Then went in Bagoas and knocked at the door of the tent for he thought that he had slept with Judith 15 But because none answered he opened it and went into the bed-chamber and found him cast upon the floor dead and his head was taken from him 16 ‖ Then Therefore he cried with a loud voice with weeping and sighing and a mighty cry and rent his garments 17 After he went into the tent where Judith lodged and when he found her not he leaped out to the people and cried 18 These slaves have dealt treacherously one woman of the Hebrews hath brought shame upon the house of king Nabuchodonolor for behold Holofernes lieth upon the ground without a head 19 When the captains of the Assyrians army heard these words they rent their coats and their minds were wonderfully troubled and there was a cry and a very great noise throughout the camp CHAP. XV. 1 The Assyrians are chased and slain 8 The high priest cometh to see Judith 11 The stuff of Holofernes is given to Judith 13 The women crown her with a garland ANd when they that were in the tents heard they were astonished at the thing that was done 2 And fear and trembling fell upon them so that there was no man that durst abide in the sight of his neighbour but rushing out altogether they fled into every way of the plain and of the hill-countrey 3 They also that had camped in the mountains round about Bethulia fled away Then the children of Israel every one that was a warriour among them rushed out upon them 4 Then sent Oziaâ— to Betomasthem and to Bebai and Chobai and Cola and to all the coasts of Israel such as should tell the things that were done and that all should rush forth upon their enemies to destroy them 5 Now when the children of Israel heard it they all fell upon them with one consent and slew them unto Chobai likewise also they that came from Jerusalem and from all the hill-countrey for men had told them what things were done in the camp of their enemies and they that were in Galaad and in Galilee ‖ Or â—â—â—ams chased them with a great slaughter until they were past Damascus and the borders thereof 6 And the residue that dwelt at Bethulia fell upon the camp of Assur and spoiled them and were greatly enriched 7 And the children of Israel that returned from the slaughter had that which remained and the villages and the cities that were in the mountains and in the plain gat many spoils for the multitude was very great 8 Then Joacim the high pâ—â—â—st and the ancients of the children of Israel that dwelt in Jerusalem came to behold the good things that God had shewed to Israel and to see Judith and to salute her 9 And when they came unto her they blessed her with
cursed and her reproach shall not be blotted out 27 And they that remain shall know that there is nothing better then the fear of the Lord and that there is nothing sweeter then to take heed unto the commandments of the Lord. 28 It is great glory to follow the Lord and to be received of him is long life CHAP. XXVI 1 A good wife 4 and a good conscience do glad men 6 A wicked wife is a fearful thing 13 Of good and bad wives 28 Of three things that are grievous 29 Merehants and buksters are not without sin BLessed is the man that hath a vertuous wife for the number of his days shall be double 2 A vertuous woman rejoyceth her husband and he shall fulfil the years of his life in peace 3 A good wife is a good portion which shall be given in the portion of them that fear the Lord. 4 Whether a man be rich or poor if he have a good heart toward the Lord he shall at all times rejoyce with a cheerful countenance 5 There be three things that mine heart feareth and for the fourth I was sore afraid †Gr. an evil report the slander of a city the gathering together of an unruly multitude and a false accusation all these are worse then death 6 But a grief of heart sorrow is a woman that is jealous over another woman a scourge of the tongue which communicateth with all 7 An evil wife is ‖ Or a yoke of oâ—en a yoke shaken to and fro he that hath hold of her is as though he held a scorpion 8 A drunken woman and a gadder abroad causeth great anger and she will not cover her own shame 9 The whoredom of a woman may be known in her haughty looks and eye-lids 10 * Chap. 42.11 If thy daughter be shameless keep her in straitly lest she abuse herself through overmuch liberty 11 Watch over an impudent eye and marvel not if she trespass against thee 12 She will open her mouth as a thirsty traveller when he hath found a fountain and drink of every water near her by every ‖ Or stake hedge will she sit down and open her quiver against everâ— arrow 13 The grace of a wife delighteth her husband and her discretion will fat his bones 14 A silent and loving woman is a gift of the Lord and there is nothing so much worth as a minde well instructed 15 A shamefacâ—d and faithful woman is a double grace and her continent minde cannot be valued 16 As the sun when it ariseth †Gr. in the highest places of the Lord. in the high heaven so is the beauty of a good wife in the ‖ Or ornament ordering of her house 17 As the clear light is upon the holy candlestick so is the beauty of the face ‖ Or in constant age in ripe age 18 As the golden pillars are upon the sockets of silver so are the ‖ Or comely fair feet with a constant ‖ Or breast heart 19 My son keep the flower of thine age sound and give not thy strength to strangers 20 When thou hast gotten a fruitful possession through all the field sowe it with thine own seed trusting in the goodness of thy stock 21 So thy race which thou leavest shall be magnified having the confidence of their good descent 22 An harlot shall be accounted as ‖ Or a swinâ— spittle but a married woman is a towre against death to her husband 23 A wicked woman is given as a portion to a wicked man but a godly woman is given to him that feareth the Lord. 24 A dishonest woman contemneth shame but an honest woman will reverence her husband 25 A shameless woman shall be counted as a dog but she that is shamefac'd will fear the Lord. 26 A woman that honoureth her husband shall be judged wise of all but she that dishonoureth him in her pride-shall be counted ungodly of all 27 A loud-crying woman and a scold shall be sought out to drive away the enemies 28 There be two things that grieve my heart and the third maketh me angry a man of war that suffereth poverty and men of understanding that are not set by and one that returneth from righteousness to sin the Lord prepareth such an one for the sword 29 A merchant shall hardly keep himself from doing wrong and an huckster shall not be freed from sin CHAP.
