XIII 1 The laws and tokens whereby the priest is to be guided in discerning the leprosie ANd the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron saying 2 When a man shall have in the skin of his flesh a ‖ Or swelling rising a scab or bright spot it be in the skin of his flesh like the plague of leprosie then he shall be brought unto Aaron the priest or unto one of his sons the priests 3 And the priest shall look on the plague in the skin of the flesh and when the hair in the plague is turned white and the plague in sight be deeper then the skin of his flesh it is a plague of leprosie and the priest shall look on him and pronounce him unclean 4 If the bright spot be white in the skin of his flesh and in sight be not deeper then the skin and the hair thereof be not turned white then the priest shall shut up him that hath the plague seven days 5 And the priest shall look on him the seventh day and behold if the plague in his sight be at a stay and the plague spread not in the skin then the priest shall shut him up seven days more 6 And the priest shall look on him again the seventh day and behold if the plague be somewhat dark and the plague spread not in the skin the priest shall pronounce him clean it is but a scab and he shall wash his clothes and be clean 7 But if the scab spread much abroad in the skin after that he hath been seen of the priest for his cleansing he shall be seen of the priest again 8 And if the priest see that behold the scab spreadeth in the skin then the priest shall pronounce him unclean it is a leprosie 9 ¶ When the plague of leprosie is in a man then he shall be brought unto the priest 10 And the priest shall see him and behold if the rising be white in the skin it have turned the hair white there be † Heb. the quickning of living flesh quick raw flesh in the rising 11 It is an old leprosie in the skin of his flesh and the priest shall pronounce him unclean and shall not shut him up for he is unclean 12 And if a leprosie break out abroad in the skin and the leprosie cover all the skin of him that hath the plague from his head even to his foot wheresoever the priest looketh 13 Then the priest shall consider and behold if the leprosie have covered all his flesh he shall pronounce him clean that hath the plague it is all turned white he is clean 14 But when raw flesh appeareth in him he shall be unclean 15 And the priest shall see the raw flesh and pronounce him to be

make thy plagues wonderful and the plagues of thy seed even great plagues and of long continuance and sore sicknesses and of long continuance 60 Moreover he will bring upon thee all the diseases of XIV 1 Samson desireth a wife of the Philistines 5 In his journey he killeth a lion 8 In a second journey be findeth honey in the carcase 10 Samsons marriate-feast 12 His riddle by his wife is made known 19 He spoileth thirty Philistines 20 His wife is married to another ANd Samson went down to Timnath and saw a woman in Timnath of the daughters of the Philistines 2 And he came up and told his father and his mother and said I have seen a woman in Timnath of the daughters of the Philistines now therefore get her for me to wife 3 Then his father and his mother said unto him Is there never a woman among the daughters of thy brethren or among all my people that thou goest to take a wife of the uncircumcised Philistines And Samson said unto his father Get her for me for † Heb. she is right in mine eyes she pleaseth me well 4 But his father and his mother knew not that it was of the LORD that he sought an occasion against the Philistines for at that time the Philistines had dominion over Israel 5 Then went Samson down and his father and his mother to Timnath and came to the vineyards of Timnath and behold a young lion roared † Heb. in meeting him against him 6 And the spirit of the LORD came mightily upon him and he rent him as he would have rent a kid and he had nothing in his hand but he told not his father or his mother what he had done 7 And he went down and talked with the woman and she pleased Samson well 8 ¶ And after a time he returned to take her and he turned aside to see the carcase of the lion and behold there was a swarm of bees and honey in the carcase of the lion 9 And he took thereof in his hands and went on eating and came to his father and mother and he gave them and they did eat but he told not them that he had taken the honey out of the carcase of the lion 10 ¶ So his father went down unto the woman and Samson made there a feast for so used the young men to do 11 And it came to pass when they saw him that they brought thirty companions to be with him 12 ¶ And Samson said unto them I will now put forth a riddle unto you if you can certainly declare it me within the seven days of the feast and finde it out then I will give

XXX 1 The Amalekites spoil Ziklag ● David asking counsel is encouraged by God to pursue them 11 By the means of a revived Egyptian he is brought to the enemies and recovereth all the spoil 22 Davids law to divide the spoil equally between them that fight and them that keep the stuff 26 He sendeth presents to his friends ANd it came to pass when David and his men were come to Ziklag on the third day that the Amalekites had invaded the south and Ziklag and smitten Ziklag and burnt it with fire 2 And had taken the women captives that were therein they slew not any either great or small but carried them away and went on their way 3 ¶ So David and his men came to the city and behold it was burnt with fire and their wives and their sons and their daughter were taken captives 4 Then David and the people that were with him lift up their voice and wept until they had no more power to weep 5 And Davids two wives were taken captives Ahinoam the Jezreehtess and Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite 6 And David was greatly distressed for the people spake of stoning him because the soul of all the people was † Heb. bitter grieved every man for his sons and for his daughters but David encouraged himself in the LORD his God 7 And David said to Abiathar the priest Ahimelechs son I pray thee bring me hither the ephod and Abiathar brought thither the ephod to David 8 And David enquired at the LORD saying Shall I pursue after this troup shall I overtake them And he answered him Pursue for thou shalt surely overtake them and without fail recover all 9 So David went he and the six hundred men that were with him and came to the brook Besor where those that were left behinde stayed 10 But David pursued he and four hundred men for two hundred abode behinde which were so faint that they could not go over the brook Besor 11 ¶ And they found an Egyptian in the field and brought him to David and gave him bread and he did eat and they made him drink water 12 And they gave him a piece of a cake of figs and two clusters of raisins and when he had eaten his spirit came again to him for he had eaten no bread nor drunk any water three days and three nights 13 And David said unto him To whom belongest thou and whence art thou And he said I am a young man of Egypt servant to an Amalekite and my master left me because three days agon I fell sick 14 We made

No. None my lord O king but Elisha the prophet that is in Israel telleth the king of Israel the words that thou speakest in thy bed-chamber 13 ¶ And he said Go and spie where he is that I may send and fetch him And it was told him saying Behold be is in Dothan 14 Therefore sent he thither horses and chariots and a † Heb. 〈◊〉 great host and they came by night and compassed the city about 15 And when the ‖ Or minister servant of the man of God was risen early and gone forth behold an host compassed the city both with horses and chariots and his servant said unto him Alas my master how shall we do 16 And he answered Fear not for * 2 Chr. 22.7 they that be with us art mo then they that be with them 17 And Elisha prayed and said LORD I pray thee open his eyes that he may see And the LORD opened the eyes of the young man and he saw and behold the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha 18 And when they came down to him Elisha prayed unto the LORD and said Smite this people I pray thee with blindness And he smote them with blindness according to the word of Elisha 19 ¶ And Elisha said unto them This is not the way neither is this the city † Heb. come ye after me follow me and I will bring you to the man whom ye seek But he led them to Samaria 20 And it came to pass when they were come into Samaria that Elisha said LORD open the eyes of these men that they may see And the LORD opened their eyes and they saw and behold they were in the mids of Samaria 21 And the king of Israel said unto Elisha when he saw them My father shall I smite them shall I smite them 22 And he answered Thou shalt not smite them wouldest thou smite those whom thou hast taken captive with thy sword and with thy bowe set bread and water before them that they may eat and drink and go to their master 23 And he prepared great provision for them and when they had eaten and drunk he sent them away and they went to their master So the hands of Syria came no more into the land of Israel 24 ¶ And it came to pass after this that Ben-hadad king of Syria gathered all his host and went up and besieged Samaria 25 And there was a great famine in Samaria and behold they besieged it until an asses head was sold for fourscore pieces of silver and the fourth part of a cab of doves dung for five pieces of silver 26 And as the king of Israel was passing by upon the wall there cried a woman unto him saying Help my lord O king 27 And he said ‖ Or let not the LORD save thee If the LORD do not help thee whence shall I help thee out of the barn-floor or out of the wine-press 28 And the king said unto her What aileth thee And she answered This woman said unto me Give thy son that we may eat him to day and we will eat my son to morrow 29 So * Deut. 28.53 we boiled my son and did eat him and I said unto her on the † Heb. ●●●er next day Give thy son that we may eat him and she hath hid her son 30 ¶ And it came to pass when the king heard the words of the woman that he tent his clothes and he passed by upon the wall and the people looked and behold he had sackcloth within upon his flesh 31 Then he said God do so and more also to me if the head of Elisha the son of Shaphat shall stand on him this day 32 But Elisha sat in his house and the elders sat with him and the king sent a man from before him but ere the messenger came to him he said to the elders See ye how this son of a murderer hath sent to take away mine head look when the messenger cometh shut the door and hold him fast at the door is not the sound of his masters feet behinde him 33 And while he yet talked with them behold the messenger came down unto him and he said Behold

Jehoram Joram was returned to be healed in Jezreel of the wounds which the Syrians † Heb. smote had given him when he fought with Hazael king of Syria And Jehu said If it be your minds then † Heb. let no escaper 80 c. let none go forth nor escape out of the city to go to tell it in Jezreel 16 So Jehu rode in a chariot and went to Jezreel for Joram lay there and Ahaziah king of Judah was come down to see Joram 17 And there stood a watchman on the tower in Jezreel and he spied the company of Jehu as he came and said I see a company And Joram said Take an hors-man and send to meet them and let him say Is it peace 18 So there went one on hors-back to meet him and said Thus saith the king Is it peace And Jehu said What hast thou to do with peace turn thee behinde me And the watchman told saying The messenger came to them but he cometh not again 19 Then he sent out a second on hors-back which came to them and said Thus saith the king Is it peace And Jehu answered What hast thou to do with peace turn thee behinde me 20 And the watchman told saying He came even unto them and cometh not again and the ‖ Or marching driving is like the driving of Jehu the son of Nimshi for he driveth † Heb. in ma●●●ss furiously 21 And Joram said † Heb. hinde Make ready And his chariot was made ready And Joram king of Israel and Ahaziah king of Judah went out each in his chariot and they went out against Jehu and † Heb. found met him in the portion of Naboth the Jezreelite 22 And it came to pass when Joram saw Jehu that he said Is it peace Jehu And he answered What peace so long as the whoredoms of thy mother Jezebel and her witcherafts are so many 23 And Joram turned his hands and fled and said to Ahaziah There is treachery O Ahaziah 24 And Jehu † Heb. filled his hand with a bowe drew a bowe with his full strength and smote Jehoram between his arms and the arrow went out at his heart and he † Heb. bowed sunk down in his chariot 25 Then said Jehu to Bidkar his captain Take up and cast him in the portion of the field of Naboth the Jezreelite for remember how that when I and thou rode together after Ahab his father * 1 King 21.29 the LORD laid this burden upon him 26 Surely I have seen yesterday the † Heb. blouds bloud of Naboth and the bloud of his sons saith the LORD and I will requite thee in this ‖ Or portion plat saith the LORD Now therefore take and cast him into the plat of ground according to the word of the LORD 27 ¶ But when Ahaziah the king of Judah saw this he fled by the way of the garden-house and Jehu followed after him and said Smite him also in the chariot And they did so at the going up to Gur which is by Ibleam and he fled to Megiddo and died there 28 And his servants carried him in a chariot to Jerusalem and buried him in his sepulchre with his fathers in the city of David 29 And in the eleventh year of Joram the son of Ahab began Ahaziah to reign over Judah 30 ¶ And when Jehu was come to Jezreel Jezebel heard of it and she † Heb. put her eyes in painting painted her face and tired her head and looked out at a window 31 And as Jehu entred in at the gate she said Had Zimri peace who slew his master 32 And he lift up his face to the window and said Who is on my side who And there looked out to him two or three ‖ Or chamberlains eunuchs 33 And he said Throw her down So they threw her down and some of her bloud was sprinkled on the wall and on the horses and he trod her under foot 34 And when he was come in he did eat and drink and said Go see now this cursed woman and bury her for she is a kings daughter 35 And they went to bury her but they found no more of her then the scull and the feet and the palms of her hands 36 Wherefore they came again and told him and he said This is the word of the LORD which he spake † Heb. by the hand of by his servant Elijah the Tishbite saying * 1 King 21.23 In the portion of Jezreel shall dogs eat the flesh of Jezebel 37 And the carcase of Jezebel shall be as dung upon the face of the field in the portion of Jezreel so that they shall not say This is Jezebel CHAP. princes and babes shall rule over them 5 And the people shall be oppressed every one by another and every one by his neighbour the childe shall behave himself proudly against the ancient and the base against the honourable 6 When a man shall take hold of his brother of the house of his father saying Thou hast clothing be thou our ruler and let this ruine be under thy hand 7 In that day shall he † Heb. lift up the hand swear saying I will not be an † Heb. binder up healer for in my house is neither bread nor clothing make me not a ruler of the people 8 For Jerusalem is ruined and Judah is faln because their tongue and their doings are against the LORD to provoke the eyes of his glory 9 ¶ The shew of their countenance doth witness against them and they declare their sin as * Gen. 13.13 18.21 19.5 Sodom they hide it not wo unto their soul for they have rewarded evil unto themselves 10 Say ye to the righteous that it shall be well with him for they shall eat the fruit of their doings 11 Wo unto the wicked it shall be ill with him for the reward of his hands shall be † Heb. done to him given him 12 ¶ As for my people children are their oppressours and women rule over them O my people ‖ Or they which call thee blessed they which lead thee cause thee to err and † Heb. swallow up destroy the way of thy paths 13 The LORD standeth up to plead standeth to judge the people 14 The LORD will enter into judgement with the ancients of his people and the princes thereof for ye have ‖ Or burnt eaten up the vineyard the spoil of the poor is in your houses 15 What mean ye th●●● ye beat my people to pieces and grinde the faces of the poor saith the Lord GOD of hosts 16 ¶ Moreover the LORD saith Because the daughters of Zion are haughty and walk with stretched-forth necks and † Heb. deceiving with their eyes wanton eyes walking and ‖ Or tripping nicel● mincing as they go and making a tinkling with their feet 17 Therefore the Lord will smite with a scab the crown of the head of the daughters of Zion and the LORD will † Heb. make ●aked discover their secret parts 18 In that day the Lord will take away the bravery of their tinkling ornaments about their feet and their ‖ Or net-works cauls and their round tires like the moon 19 The ‖ Or sweet balls chains and the brace●ers and the ‖ Or spangled ornaments mufflers 20 The bonnets and the ornaments of the legs and the headbands and the † Heb. ●ouses of the soul tablets and the ear-rings 21 The rings and nose-jewels 22 The changeable suits of apparel and the mantles and the wimples and the crisping-pins 23 The glasses and the fine linen and the hoods and the veils 24 And it shall come to pass that in stead of sweet smell there shall be stink and in stead of a girdle a rent and in stead of well set hair baldness and in stead of a stomacher a girding of sackcloth and burning in stead of beauty 25 Thy men shall fall by the sword and thy † Heb. mi●●t mighty in the war 26 And her gates shall lament and mourn and she being ‖ Or emptied † Heb. creansed desolate shall sit upon the ground CHAP. Deu. 23.19 Psal 15.5 usury neither hath taken an● increase that hath withdrawn his hand from iniquity hath executed true judgement between man and man 9 Hath walked in my statutes and hath kept my judgements to deal truly he is just he shall surely live saith the Lord GOD. 10 ¶ If he beget a son that is a ‖ Or breaker up of an house robber a shedder of bloud and ‖ Or that doeth to his brother besides any of these that doeth the like to any one of these things 11 And that doeth not any of those duties but even hath eaten upon the mountains and defiled his neighbours wife 12 Hath oppressed the poor and needy hath spoiled by violence hath not restored the pledge and hath lift up his eyes to the idols hath committed abomination 13 Hath given forth upon usury and hath taken increase shall he then live he shall not live he hath done all these abominations he shall surely die his † Heb. blouds bloud shall be upon him 14 ¶ Now lo if he beget a son that seeth all his fathers sins which he hath done and considereth and doeth not such like 15 That hath not eaten upon the mountains neither hath lift up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel hath not defiled his neighbours wife 16 Neither hath oppressed any † Heb. hath not gledzed the ●ledge or taken to pledge hath not withholden the pledge neither hath spoiled by violence but hath given his bread to the hungry and hath covered the naked with a garment 17 That hath taken off his hand from the poor that hath not received usury nor increase hath executed my judgements hath walked in my statutes he shall not die for the iniquity of his father he shall surely live 18 As for his father because he cruely oppressed spoiled his brother by violence and
life have received benefits and have not known me 11 And they that have lothed my law while they had yet liberty and when as yet place of repentance was open unto them understood not but despised it 12 The same must know it after death by pain 13 And therefore be thou not curious how the ungodly shall be punished and when but enquire how the righteous shall be saved whole the world is and for whom the world is created 14 Then answered I and said 15 I have said before and now do speak and will speak it also hereafter that there be many mo of them which perish then of them which shall be saved 16 Like as a wave is greater then a drop 17 And he answered me saying Like as the field is so is also the seed as the Howers be such are the colours also such as the workman is such also is the work and as the husbandman is himself so is his husbandry also for it was the time of the world 18 ‖ And now because the time of the world was come when I was preparing the world c. And now when I prepared the world which was not yet made even for them to dwell in that now live no man spake against me 19 For then every one obeyed ‖ but when the world was made both now and then the manners of every one created were corrupted by a never-failing harvest and a law unsearchable but now the manners of them which are created in this world that is made are corrupted by a perpetual seed and by a law which is unsearchable rid themselves 20 So I considered the world and behold there was peril because of the devices that were come into it 21 And I saw and spared it greatly and have kept me a ‖ Or grain grape of the cluster and a plant of a great people 22 Let the multitude perish then which was born in vain and let my ‖ Or grain grape be kept my plant for with great labour have I made it perfect 23 Nevertheless if thou wilt cease yet seven days mo but thou shalt not fast in them 24 But go into a field of flowers where no house is builded and eat onely the flowers of the field taste no flesh drink no wine but eat flowers onely 25 And pray unto the Highest continually then will I come and talk with thee 26 So I went my way into the field which is called Ardath like as he commanded me and there I sat amongst the flowers and did eat of the herds of the field and the meat of the same satisfied me 27 After seven days I sat upon the grass and my heart was vexed within me like as before 28 And I opened my mouth and began to talk before the most High and said 29 O Lord thou that shewest thy self unto us thou wast * Ex. 19.9 and 24.3 Deut. 4.12 shewed unto our fathers in the wilderness in a place where no man ‖ Or co●●th treadeth in a barren place when they came out of Egypt 30 And thouspakest saying Hear me O Israel and mark my words thou seed of Jacob. 31 For behold I sow my law in you and it shall bring fruit in you and ye shall be honoured in it for ever 32 But our fathers which received the law kept it not and observed not thy ordinances and though the fruit of thy law did not perish neither could it for it was thine 33 Yet they that received it perished because they kept not the thing that was sown in them 34 And so it is a custom when the ground hath received seed or the sea a ship or any vessel meat or drink that that being perished wherein it was sown or cast into 35 That thing also which was sown or cast therein or received doth perish and remaineth not with us but with us it hath not hapned so 36 For we that have received the law perish by sin and our heart also which received it 37 Notwithstanding the law perisheth not but remaineth in his force 38 And when I spake these things in my heart I looked back with mine eyes and upon the right side I saw a woman and behold she mourned and wept with a loud voice and was much grieved in heart and her clother were rent and she had ashes upon her head 39 Then let I my thoughts go that I was in and turned me unto her 40 And said unto her Wherefore weepest thou why art thou so grieved in thy minde 41 And she said unto me Sir let me alone that I may bewail my lelf and add unto my sorrow for I am sore vexed in my minde and brought very low 42 And I said unto her What aileth thee tell me 43 She said unto me I thy servant have been barren and had no childe though I had an husband thirty years 44 And those thirty years I did nothing else day and night and every hour but make my prayer to the Highest 45 After thirty years God heard me thine hand-maid looked upon my misery considered my trouble and gave me a son and I was very glad of him so was my husband also and all my neighbours and we gave great honour unto the Almighty 46 And I nourished him with great travel 47 So when he grew up and came to the time that he should have a wife I made a feast CHAP. X. 1 He comforteth the woman in the field 17 She vanisheth away and a city appeareth in her place 40 The angel declareth these visions in the field ANd it so came to pass that when my son was entred into his wedding-chamber he fell down and died 2 Then we all overthrew the lights and all my ‖ Or countrey-men Lat. citizens neighbours rose up to comfort me so I took my rest unto the second day at night 3 And it came to pass when they had all left off to comfort me to the end I might be quiet then rose I up by night and fled and came hither into this field as thou seest 4 And I do now purpose not to return into the city but here to stay and neither to eat nor drink but continually to mourn and to fast until I die 5 Then left I the ‖ Or speeches meditations wherein I was and spake to to her in anger saying 6 Thou foolish woman above all other seest thou not our mourning and what hapneth unto us 7 How that Sion our mother is full of all heaviness and much humbled mourning very sore 8 And now seeing we all mourn and are sad for we are all in heaviness art thou grieved for one son 9 For ask the earth and she shall tell thee that it is she which ought to mourn for the fall of so many that grow upon her 10 For out of her came all at the first and out of her shall all others come and behold they walk almost all into destruction and a multitude of them is
words surely if thou do as thou hast spoken thy God shall be my God and thou shalt dwell in the house of king Nabuchodonosor and shalt be renowned through the whole earth CHAP. XII 2 Judith will not ●at of Holofernes meat 7 She tarried three days in the camp and every night went forth to pray 13 Bagoas moveth her to be merry with Holofernes 20 who for joy of her company drunk much THen he commanded to bring her in where his plate was set and bade that they should prepare for her of his own meats and that she should drink of his own wine 2 And Judith said I * Gen. 43.32 Dan. 1.8 Tob. 1.11 will not eat thereof lest there be an offence but provision shall be made for me of the things that I have brought 3 Then Holofernes said unto her If thy provision should fail how should we give thee the like for there be none with us of thy nation 4 Then said Judith unto him As thy soul liveth my lord thine hand-maid shall not spend those things that I have before the Lord work by mine hand the things that he hath determined 5 Then the servants of Holofernes brought her into the tent and she slept till midnight and she arose when it was towards the morning watch 6 And sent to Holofernes saying Let my Lord now command that thine hand maid may go forth unto prayer 7 Then Holofernes commanded his guard that they should not stay her thus she abode in the camp three days and went out in the night into the valley of Bethulia and washed her self in a fountain of water by the camp 8 And when she came out she besought the Lord God of Israel to direct her way to the raising up of the children of her people 9 So she came in clean and remained in the lent until she did eat her meat at evening 10 And in the fourth day Holofernes made a feast to his own servants onely and called none of the officers to the banquet 11 Then said he to Bagoas the eunuch who had charge over all that he had Go now and perswade this Hebrew woman which is with thee that she come unto us and eat and drink with us 12 For lo it will be a shame for our person if we shall let such a woman go not having had her company for if we draw her not unto us she will laugh us to scorn 13 Then went Bagoas from the presence of Holofernes and came to her and he said Let not this fair damsel fear to come to my lord and to be honoured in his presence and drink wine and be merry with u● and be made this day as one of the daughters of the Assyrians which serve in the house of Nabuchodonosor 14 Then said Judith unto him Who am I now that I should gainsay my lord surely whatsoever pleaseth him I will do speedily and it shall be my joy unto the day of my death 15 So she arose and decked her self with her apparel and all her womans attire and her maid went and laid soft skins on the ground for her over against Holofernes which she had received of Bagoas for her daily use that she might sit and eat u●on them 16 Now when Judith came in and sat down Holofernes his heart was ravished with her and his minde was moved and he desired greatly her company for he waited a time to deceive her from the day that he had seen her 17 Then said Holofernes unto her Drink now and be merry with us 18 So Judith said I will drink now my lord because my life is magnified in me this day more then all the days since I was bor● 19 Then she took and ate and drank before him what her maid had prepared 20 And Holofernes took great delight in her and drank much more wine then he had drunk at any time in one day since he was b●rn CHAP. XIII 2 Judith is left alone with Holofernes in his tent 4 She prayeth God to give her strength 7 She cut off his head while he slept 10 and returned with it to Bethulia 17 They saw it and commend her NOw when the evening was come his servants made haste to depart and Bagoas shut his tent without and dismissed the waiters from the presence of his lord and they went to their beds for they were all weary because the feast had been long 2 And Judith was left alone in the tent and Holofernes lying along upon his bed for he was filled with * Ecclu● 31.20 25 wine 3 Now Judith had commanded her maid to stand without her bed-chamber and to wait for her coming forth as she did daily for she said she would go forth to her prayers and she spake to Bagoas according to the same purpose 4 So all went forth and none was left in the bed-chamber neither little nor great Then Judith standing by his bed said in her heart O Lord God of all power look at this present upon the works of mine hands for the exaltation of Jerusalem 5 For now is the time to help thine inheritance and to execute mine enterprises to the destruction of the enemies which are risen against us 6 Then she came to the pillar of the bed which was at Holofernes head and took down his fauchion from thence 7 And approached to his bed and took hold of the hair of his head and said Strengthen me O Lord God of Israel this day 8 And she smote twice upon his neck with all her might and she took away his head from him 9 And tumbled his body down from the bed and pulled down the canopy from the pillars and anon after she went forth and gave Holofernes his head to her maid 10 And she put it in her bag of meat so they twain went together according to their custom unto prayer and when they passed the camp they compassed the valley and went up the mountain of Bethulia and came to the gates thereof 11 Then said Judith afar off to the watchmen at the gate Open open now the gate God even our God is with us to shew his power yet in Jerusalem and his forces against the enemy as he hath even done this day 12 Now when the men of her city heard her voice they made haste to go down to the gate of their city and they called the elders of the city 13 And then they ran all together both small and great for it was strange unto them that she was come so they opened the gate and received them and made a fire for a light and stood round about them 14 Then she said to them with a loud voice Praise praise God praise God I say for he hath not taken away his mercy from the house of Israel but hath destroyed our enemies by mine hands this night 15 So she took the head out of the bag and shewed it and said unto them Behold the head of Holofernes the chief captain of
cursed and her reproach shall not be blotted out 27 And they that remain shall know that there is nothing better then the fear of the Lord and that there is nothing sweeter then to take heed unto the commandments of the Lord. 28 It is great glory to follow the Lord and to be received of him is long life CHAP. XXIV 2 Wisdom doth praise her self sheweth her beginning 4 her dwelling 13 her glory 1● her fruit 26 ber increase and perfection The praise of wisdom Wisdom shall praise her self and shall glory in the midst of her people 2 In the congregation of the most High shall she open her mouth and triumph before his power 3 I came out of the mouth of the most High and covered the earth as ‖ Or a mist a cloud 4 * Job 22.14 I dwelt in high places and my throne is in a cloudy pillar 5 I alone compassed the circuit of heaven and walked in the bottom of the deep 6 In the waves of the sea and in all the earth and in every people and nation I got a possession 7 With all these I sought rest in whose inheritance shall I abide 8 So the Creatour of all things gave me a commandment and he that made me caused my tabernacle to rest and said Let thy dwelling be in Jacob and thine inheritance in Israel 9 He * Prov. 8.22 created me from the beginning before the world and I shall never fail 10 In the * Exod. 21.3 holy tabernacle I served before him and so was I established in Sion 11 * Ps 132.8 Likewise in the ‖ Or holy beloved city he gave me rest and in Jerusalem was my power 12 And I took root in an honourable people even in the portion of the Lords inheritance 13 I was exalted like a cedar in Libanus and as a cypress-tree upon the mountains of Hermon 14 I was exalted like a palm-tree in ‖ Or Ca●es Engaddi and as a rose-plant in Jericho as a fair olive tree in a pleasant field and grew up as a plant-tree ‖ Or in the water by the water 15 I gave a sweet smell like cinnamon and aspalathus and I yeelded a pleasant odour like the best myrrh as galbanum and onyx and sweet storax and as the fume of frankincense in the * Exod. 30.34 tabernacle 16 As the turpentine-tree I stretched out my branches and my branches are the branches of honour and grace 17 * Joh. 15.1 As the vine brought I forth pleasant savour and my flowers are the fruit of honour and riches 18 I am the mother of fair love and fear and knowledge and holy hope I therefore being eternal am given to all my children which are ‖ Or chosen named of him 19 Come unto me all ye that be desirous of me and fill your selves with my fruits 20 For my memorial is * Psal 19.10 11. sweeter then hony and mine inheritance then the hony-comb 21 They that eat me shall yet be hungry and they that drink me shall yet be thirsty 22 He that obeyeth me shall never be confounded and they that work by me shall not do amiss 23 All these things are the book of the covenant of the most High God even the * Ex. 20.1 24.3 Deut. 4.1 29.1 law which Moses commanded for an heritage unto the congregation of Jacob. 24 Faint not to be strong in the Lord that he may confirm you cleave unto him for the Lord Almighty is God alone and besides him there is no other Saviour 25 He filleth all things with his wisdom as * Gen. 2. ●1 Phison and as Tigris in the time of the new fruits 26 He maketh the understanding to abound like Euphrates and as * Josh 3.15 Jordan in the time of the harvest 27 He maketh the doctrine of knowledge appear as the light and as Geon in the time of vintage 28 The first man knew her not perfectly no more shall the last finde her out 29 For her thoughts are more then the sea and her counsels profounder then the great deep 30 I also came out as a ‖ Or drain or ditch brook from a river and as a conduit into a garden 31 I said I will water my best garden and will water abundantly my garden-bed and lo my brook became a river and my river became a sea 32 I will yet make doctrine to shine as the morning and will send forth her light afar off 33 I will yet pour out doctrine as prophesie and leave it to all ages for ever 34 * Chap. 33.17 Behold that I have not laboured for my self onely but for all them that seek wisdom CHAP. XXV 1 What things are beautiful and what hateful 6 What is the crown of age 7 What things make men happy 13 Nothing worse then a wicked woman IN three things I ‖ Or gloried was beautified and stood up beautiful both before God and men the * Gen. 13.8 Rom. 12. ●0 unity of brethren the love of neighbours a man and a wife that agree together 2 Three sorts of men my soul hateth and I am greatly offended at their life a poor man that is proud a rich man that is a liar and an old adulterer that doteth 3 If thou hast gathered nothing in thy youth how canst thou finde any thing in thine age 4 Oh how comely a thing is judgement for gray hairs and for ancient men to know counsel 5 Oh how comely is the wisdom of old men and understanding and counsel to men of honour 6 Much experience is the crown of old men and the fear of God is their glory 7 There be nine things which I have judged in mine heart to be happy and the tenth I will utter with my tongue A man that hath joy of his children and he that liveth to see the fall of his enemy 8 Well is him that dwelleth with a wife of understanding and that hath not * Ch. 14.1 19.16 Jam. 3.2 slipped with his tongue and that hath not served a man more unworthy then himself 9 Well is him that hath found ‖ Or a friend prudence and he that speaketh in the ears of them that will hear 10 Oh how great is he that findeth wisdom yet is there none above him that feareth the Lord. 11 But the love of the Lord passeth all things for illumination he that holdeth it ‖ Or to whom whereto shall he be likened 12 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of his love and faith is the beginning of cleaving unto him 13 Give me any plague but the plague of the heart and any wickedness but the wickedness of a woman 14 And any affliction but the affliction from them that hate me and any revenge but the revenge of enemies 15 There is no head above the head of a serpent and there is no wrath above the wrath of an enemy 16 * Prov.
and set a diadem on thine head of the glory of the Everlasting 3 For God will shew thy brightness unto every countrey under heaven 4 For thy name shall be called of God for ever The peace of righteousness and the glory of Gods worship 5 Arise O Jerusalem and stand on high and look about toward the east and behold thy children gathered from the west unto the east by the word of the holy One rejoycing in the remembrance of God 6 For they departed from thee on foot and were led away of their enemies but God bringeth them unto thee exalted with glory as children of the kingdom 7 For God hath appointed that every high hill and banks of long continuance should be cast down and valleys filled up to make even the ground that Israel may go safely in the glory of God 8 Moreover even the woods and every sweet-smelling tree shall overshadow Israel by the commandment of God 9 For God shall lead Israel I with joy in the light of his glory with the mercy and righteousness that cometh from him CHAP. VI. 1 The cause of their captivity is their sin 3 The place whereto they were carried is Babylon the vanity of whose idols and idolatry is set forth at lar●e in this chapter ¶ A copy of an epistle which Jeremy sent unto them which were to be led captives into Babylon by the king of the Babylonians to certify them as it was commanded him of God BEcause of the sins which ye have committed before God ye shall be led away captives into Babylon by Nabuchodonosor king of the Babylonians 3 So when ye be come unto Babylon ye shall remain there many years and for a long season namely seven generations and after that I will bring you away peaceably from thence 4 * Ps 115.4 Isa 44.8 9 10. 46.5.7 Wisd 13.10 Now shall ye see in Babylon gods of silver and of gold and of wood born upon shoulders which cause the nations to fear 5 Beware therefore that ye in no wise be like to strangers neither be ye afraid of them when ye see the multitude before them and behinde them worshipping them 6 But say ye in your hearts O Lord we must worship thee 7 For mine angel is with you and I my self caring for your souls 8 As for their tongue it is polished by the workman and they themselves are gilded and laid over with gold yet are they but false and cannot speak 9 And taking gold as it were for a virgin that loves to go gay they make crowns for the herds of their gods 10 Sometimes also the priests convey from their gods gold and silver and bestow it upon themselves 11 Yea they will give thereof to the ‖ Or which prostitute themselves openly common harlots and deck them as men with garments being gods of silver and gods of gold and wood 12 Yet cannot these gods save themselves from rust and moths though they be covered with purple raiment 13 They wipe their faces because of the dust of the temple when there is much upon them 14 And he that cannot put to death one that offendeth him holdeth a sceptre as though he were a judge of the countrey 15 He hath also in his right hand a dagger and an ax but cannot deliver himself from war and theeves 16 Whereby they are known not to be gods therefore fear them not 17 For like as a vessel that a man useth is nothing worth when it is broken even so it is with their gods when they be set up in the temple their eyes be full of dust through the feet of them that come in 18 And as the ‖ Or courts doors are made sure on every side upon him that offendeth the king as being committed to suffer death even so the priests make fast their temples with doors with locks and bars lest their gods be spoiled with robbers 19 They light them candles yea more then for themselves whereof they cannot see one 20 They are as one of the beams of the temple yet they say their hearts are † Gr. licked gnawed upon by things creeping out of the earth and when they eat them and their clothes they feel it not 21 Their faces are blacked through the smoke that comes out of the temple 22 Upon their bodies and heads sit bats swallows and birds and the cats also 23 By this you may know that they are no gods therefore fear them not 24 Notwithstanding the gold that is about them to make them beautiful except they wipe off the rust they will not shine for neither when they were molten did they feel it 25 The things wherein there is no breath are bought for ‖ Or any price a most high price 26 * Isa 46.7 They are born upon shoulders having no feet whereby they declare unto men that they be nothing worth 27 They also that serve them are ashamed for if they fall to the ground at any time they cannot rise up again of themselves neither if one let them upright can they move of themselves neither if they be bowed down can they make themselves straight but they set ‖ Or offerings gifts before them as unto dead men 28 As for the things that are sacrificed unto them their priests sell and ‖ Or spend abuse in like manner their wives lay up part thereof in salt but unto the poor and impotent they give nothing of it 29 Menstruous women and women in childbed * Lev. 12.4 eat their sacrifices by these things ye may know that they are no gods fear them not 30 For how can they be called gods because women set meat before the gods of silver gold and wood 31 And the priests sit in their temples having their clothes rent and their heads and beards shaven and nothing upon their heads 32 They rore and cry before their gods as men do at the feast when one is dead 33 The priests also take off their garments and clothe their wives and children 34 Whether it be evil that one doeth unto them or good they are not able to recompense it they can neither set up a king nor put him down 35 In like manner they can neither give riches nor money though a man make a vow unto them and keep it not they will not require it 36 They can save no man from death neither deliver the weak from the mighty 37 They cannot restore a blinde man to his sight nor help any man in his distress 38 They can shew no mercy to the widow nor do good to the fatherless 39 Their gods of wood and which are overlaid with gold and silver are like the stones that be hewn out of the mountain they that worship them shall be confounded 40 How should a man then think and say that they are gods when even the Caldeans themselves dishonour them 41 Who if they shall see one dumb that cannot speak they ‖ Or bid
heard of the fame of Jesus 2 And said unto his servants This is John the Baptist he is risen from the dead and therefore mighty works ‖ Or are wrought by him do shew forth themselves in him 3 ¶ * Luk. 3.19 20. For Herod had laid hold on John and bound him and put him in prison for Herodias sake his brother Philips wife 4 For John said unto him * Levit. 18.16 and 20.21 It is not lawful for thee to have her 5 And when he would have put him to death he feared the multitude * Chap. 21.26 because th●y counted him as a prophet 6 But when Herods birth-day was kept the daughter of Herodias danced before them and pleased Herod 7 Whereupon he promised with an oath to give her whatsoever she would ask 8 And she being before instructed of her mother said Give me here John Baptists head in a charger 9 And the king was sorry nevertheless for the oaths sake and them which sat with him at meat he commanded it to be given her 10 And he sent and beheaded John in the prison 11 And his head was brought in a charger and given to the damsel and she brought it to her mother 12 And his disciples came and took up the body and buried it and went and told Jesus 13 ¶ * Mar. 6.32 Luke 9.10 When Jesus heard of it he departed thence by ship into a desert place apart and when the people had heard thereof they followed him on foot out of the cities 14 And Jesus went forth and saw a great multitude and was moved with compassion toward them and he healed their sick 15 ¶ * Mar. 6.35 Joh. 6.5 And when it was evening his disciples came to him saying This is a desert place and the time is now past send the multitude away that they may go into the villages and buy themselves victuals 16 But Jesus said unto them They need not depart give ye them to eat 17 And they say unto him We have here but five loaves two fishes 18 He said Bring them hither to me 19 And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the grass and took the five loaves and the two fishes and looking up to heaven he blessed and brake and gave the loaves to his disciples and the disciples to the multitude 20 And they did all eat and were filled and they took up of the fragments that remained twelve baskets full 21 And they that had eaten were about five thousand men beside women and children 22 ¶ And straightway Jesus constrained his disciples to get into a ship and to go before him unto the other side while he sent the multitudes away 23 * Mar. 6.46 And when he had sent the multitudes away he went up into a mountain apart to pray * John 6.26 and when the evening was come he was there alone 24 But the ship was now in the midst of the sea tossed with waves for the wind was contrary 25 And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them walking on the sea 26 And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea they were troubled saying It is a spirit and they cried out for fear 27 But straightway Jesus spake unto them saying Be of good cheer it is I be not afraid 28 And Peter answered him and said Lord if it be thou bid me come unto thee on the water 29 And he said Come And when Peter was come down out of the ship he walked on the water to go to Jesus 30 But when he saw the wind ‖ Or strong boistrous he was afraid and beginning to sink he cried saying Lord save me 31 And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand and caught him and said unto him O thou of little faith wherefore didst thou doubt 32 And when they were come into the ship the wind ceased 33 Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him saying Of a truth thou art the Son of God 34 ¶ * Mar. 6.33 And when they were gone over they came into the land of Genesaret 35 And when the men of that place had knowledge of him they sent out into all that countrey round about and brought unto him all that were diseased 36 And besought him that they might onely touch the hem of his garment and as many as touched were made perfectly whole CHAP. XV. 3 Christ reproveth the scribes and Pharisee● for transgressing Gods commandments through their own traditions 11 teacheth how that which goeth into the mouth doth not defile a man 21 He healeth the daughter of the woman of Canaan 30 and other great multitudes 32 with seven loaves and a few little fishes feedeth four thousand men besides women and children THen * Mar. 7.1 came to Jesus scribes and Pharisees which were of Jerusalem saying 2 Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders for they wash not their hands when they eat bread 3 But he answered and said unto them Why do you also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition 4 For God commanded saying * Exod. 20.12 Deut. 5.16 Honour thy father and mother and * Exod. 21.17 Lev. 20.9 Prov. 20.20 he that curseth father or mother let him die the death 5 But ye say Whosoever shall say to his father or his mother * Mark 7.11 12. It is a gift by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me 6 And honour not his father or his mother he shall be free Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition 7 Ye hypocrites well did Esaias prophesie of you saying 8 * Isa 29.13 This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth and honoureth me with their lips but their heart is far from me 9 But in vain they do worship me teaching for doctrines the commandments of men 10 ¶ * Mark 7 14. And he called the multitude said unto them Hear understand 11 Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man but that which cometh out of the mouth this defileth a man 12 Then came his disciples and said unto him Knowest thou that the Pharisees were offended after they heard this saying 13 But he answered and said * Joh. 15. ● Every plant which my heavenly Father hath not planted shall be rooted up 14 Let them alone * Luke 6.39 they be blinde leaders of the blinde And if the blinde lead the blinde both shall fall into the ditch 15 * Mark 7.17 Then answered Peter and said unto him Declare unto us this parable 16 And Jesus said Are ye also yet without understanding 17 Do not ye yet understand that whatsoever entreth in at the mouth goeth into the belly and is cast out into the draught 18 But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart and they defile the man 19 * Gen. 6.5 and 8.21 For out of the heart
proceed evil thoughts murders adulteries fornications thefts false witness blasphemies 20 These are the things which defile a man but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not a man 21 ¶ * Mark 7.24 Then Jesus went thence and departed into the coasts of Tyre and Sidon 22 And behold a woman of Canaan came out of the same coasts and cried unto him saying Have mercy on me O Lord thou son of David my daughter is grievously vexed with a devil 23 But he answered her not a word And his disciples came and besought him saying Send her away for she crieth after us 24 But he answered and said * Chap 10.6 I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel 25 Then came she and worshipped him saying Lord help me 26 But he answered and said It is not meet to take the childrens bread and to cast it to dogs 27 And she said Truth Lord yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters table 28 Then Jesus answered and said unto her O woman great is thy saith be it unto thee even as thou wilt And her daughter was made whole from that very hour 29 * Mark 7.31 And Jesus departed from thence and came nigh unto the sea of Galilee and went up into a mountain and sat down there 30 * Is 35.5 6. And great multitudes came unto him having with them those that were lame blinde dumb maimed and many others and cast them down at Jesus feet and he healed them 31 Insomuch that the multitude wondred when they saw the dumb to speak the maimed to be whole the lame to walk and the blinde to see and they glorified the God of Israel 32 ¶ * Mar. 8.1 Then Jesus called his disciples unto him and said I have compassion on the multitude because they continue with me now three days and have nothing to eat and I will not send them away fasting lest they faint in the way 33 And his disciples say unto him Whence should we have so much bread in the wilderness as to fill so great a multitude 34 And Jesus saith unto them How many loaves have ye and they said Seven and a few little fishes 35 And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground 36 And he took the seven loaves and the fishes and gave thanks and brake them and gave to his disciples and the disciples to the multitude 37 And they did all eat and were filled and they took up of the broken meat that was left seven baskets full 38 And they that did eat were four thousand men beside women and children 39 And he sent away the multitude and took ship and came into the coasts of Magdala CHAP. XVI 1 The Pharisees require a signe 6 Jesus warneth his disciples of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees 13 The peoples opinion of Christ 16 and Peters confession of him 21 Jesus foresheweth his death 23 reproving Peter for dis●wa●ing him from it 24 And admonisheth those that will follow him to bear the cross THe * Mar. 8.11 Luk. 12.54 Pharisees also with the Sadducees came and tempting desired him that he would shew them a signe from heaven 2 He answered and said unto them When it is evening ye say It will be fair weather for the skie is red 3 And in the morning It will be soul weather to day for the skie is read and lowring O ye hypocrites ye can discern the face of the skie but can ye not discern the signes of the times 4 A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a signe and there shall no signe be given unto it but the signe of the prophet Jonas And he lef them and departed 5 And when his disciples were come to the other side they had forgotten to take bread 6 ¶ Then Jesus said unto them Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees 7 And they reasoned among themselves saying It is because we have taken no bread 8 Which when Jesus perceived he said unto them O ye of little faith why reason ye among your selves because ye have brought no bread 9 * Chap. 14.17 Do ye not yet understand neither remember the five loaves of the five thousand and how many baskets ye took up 10 * Chap. 15.34 Neither the seven loaves of the four thousand and how many baskets ye took up 11 How is it that ye do not understand that I speak it not to you concerning bread that ye should beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees 12 Then understood they how that he bade them not beware of the leaven of bread but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees 13 ¶ When Jesus came into the coasts of Cesarea Philippi he asked his disciples saying * 〈◊〉 8.27 Luk 9.18 Whom do men say that I the Son of man am 14 And they said Some say that thou art John the Baptist some Elias and others Jeremias or one of the prophets 15 He saith unto them But whom say ye that I am 16 And Simon Peter answered and said * Joh. 6.69 thou art Christ the Son of the living God 17 And Jesus answered and said unto him Blessed art thou Simon Bar-jona for flesh and bloud hath not revealed it unto thee but my Father which is in heaven 18 And I say also unto thee that * Joh. 1.42 thou art Peter and upon this rock I will build my church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it 19 * Joh. 20.23 And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven and whatsoever thou shalt binde on earth shall be bound in heaven and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven 20 Then charged he his disciples that they should tell no man that he was Jesus the Christ 21 ¶ Fom that time forth began Jesus to shew unto his disciples how that he must go unto Jerusalem and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests scribes and be killed and be raised again the third day 22 Then Peter took him and began to rebuke him saying Be it far from thee Lord this shall not be unto thee 23 But he turned and said unto Peter Get thee behinde me Satan thou art an offence unto me for thou savourest not the things that be of God but those that be of men 24 ¶ * Ch. 10.38 Mark 8.34 Then said Jesus unto his disciples If any man will come after me let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me 25 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall finde it 26 For what is a man profited if he shall gain the whole world and lose his own soul or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul 27 For the Son of man shall come in the glory of

VII 1 The Pharisees finde fault at the disciples for eating with unwashen hands 8 They break the commandment of God by the traditions of men 14 Meat defileth not the man 24 He healeth the Syrophenician womans daughter of an unclean spirit 31 and one that was deaf stammered in his speech THen * Mat. 1● ● came together unto him the Pharisees and certain of the scribes which came from Jerusalem 2 And when they saw some of his disciples eat bread with ‖ Or common defiled that is to say with unwashen hands they found fault 3 For the Pharisees and all the Jews except they wash their hands ‖ Or d●ligently in the original with the fist Theophylact up to the elbow oft eat not holding the tradition of the elders 4 And when they come from the market except they wash they eat not And many other things there be which they have received to hold as the washing of cups and ‖ Sextariu● is about a pint and an half pots brasen vessels and of ‖ Or beds tables 5 Then the Pharisees and scribes asked him Why walk not thy disciples according to the tradition of the elders but eat bread with unwashen hands 6 He answered and said unto them Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites as it is written * Isa 29.13 Mat. 15.8 This people honoureth me with their lips but their heart is far from me 7 Howbeit in vain do they worship me teaching for doctrines the commandments of men 8 For laying aside the commandment of God ye hold the tradition of men as the washing of pots and cups and many other such like things ye do 9 And he said unto them Full well ye ‖ O● frustrate reject the commandment of God that ye may keep your own tradition 10 For Moses said Honour thy father and thy mother and Whoso curs●th father or mother let him die the death 11 But ye say If a man shall say to his father or mother It is * Mat. 15.5 Corban that is to say a gift by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me he shall be free 12 And ye suffer him no more to do ought for his father or his mother 13 Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition which ye have delivered and many such like things do ye 14 ¶ * Mat. 15.10 And when he had called all the people unto him he said unto them Hearken unto me every one of you and understand 15 There is nothing from without a man that entring into him can defile him but the things which come out of him those are they that defile the man 16 If any man have ears to hear let him hear 17 And when he was
he heard of Jesus he sent unto him the elders of the Jews beseeching him that he would come and heal his servant 4 And when they came to Jesus they besought him instantly saying that he was worthy for whom he should do this 5 For he loveth our nation and he hath built us a synagogue 6 Then Jesus went with them And when he was now not far from the house the centurion sent friends to him saying unto him Lord trouble not thy self for I am not worthy that thou shouldest enter under my roof 7 Wherefore neither thought I my self worthy to come unto thee but say in a word and my servant shall be healed 8 For I also am a man set under authority having under me souldiers and I say unto one Go and he goeth and to another Come and he cometh and to my servant Do this and he doeth it 9 When Jesus heard these things he marvelled at him and turned him about and said unto the people that followed him I say unto you I have not found so great faith no not in Israel 10 And they that were sent returning to the house found the servant whole that had been sick 11 ¶ And it came to pass the day after that he went into a city called Nain and many of his disciples went with him and much people 12 Now when he came nigh to the gate of the city behold there was a dead man carried out the onely son of his mother and she was a widow and much people of the city was with her 13 And when the Lord saw her he had compassion on her and said unto her Weep not 14 And he came and touched the ‖ Or coffin biere and they that bare him stood still and he said Young man I say unto thee Arise 15 And he that was dead sat up and began to speak and he delivered him to his mother 16 And there came a fear on all and they glorified God saying That a great prophet is risen up among us and That God hath visited his people 17 And this rumour of him went forth throughout all Judea and throughout all the region round about 18 * Matth. 11.2 And the disciples of John shewed him of all these things 19 ¶ And John calling unto him two of his disciples sent them unto Jesus saying Art thou he that should come or look we for another 20 When the men were come unto him they said John Baptist hath sent us unto thee saying Art thou he that should come or look we for another 21 And in that same hour he cured many of their infirmities and plagues and of evil spirits and unto many that were blinde he gave sight 22 Then Jesus answering said unto them Go your way and tell John what things ye have seen and heard how that the blinde see the lame walk the lepers are cleansed the deaf hear the dead are raised to the poor the gospel is preached 23 And blessed is he whosoever shall not be offended in me 24 ¶ And when the messengers of John were departed he began to speak unto the people concerning John What went ye out into the wilderness for to see A reed shaken with the wind 25 But what went ye out for to see A man clothed in soft raiment Behold they which are gorgeously apparelled and live delicately are in kings courts 26 But what went ye out for to see A prophet Yea I say unto you and much more then a prophet 27 This is he of whom it is written Behold I send my messenger before thy face which shall prepare thy way before thee 28 For I say unto you Among those that are born of women there is not a greater prophet then John the Baptist but he that is least in the kingdom of God is greater then he 29 And all the people that heard him and the publicans justified God being baptized with the baptism of John 30 But the Pharisees and lawyers ‖ Or frustrated rejected the counsel of God ‖ Or within themselves against themselves being not baptized of him 31 ¶ And the Lord said * Mat. 11.16 Whereunto then shall I liken the men of this generation and to what are they like 32 They are like unto children sitting in the market-place and calling one to another and saying We have piped unto you and ye have not danced we have mourned to you and ye have not wept 33 For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine and ye say He hath a devil 34 The Son of man is come eating and drinking and ye say Behold a gluttonous man and a wine bibber a friend of publicans and sinners 35 But wisdom is justified of all her children 36 ¶ * Mark ●4 3 And one of the Pharisees desired him that he would eat with him And he went into the Pharisee's house and sat down to meat 37 And behold a woman in the city which was a sinner when she knew that Jesus sat at meat in the Pharisee's house brought an alabaster-box of ointment 38 And stood at his feet behinde him weeping and began to wash his feet with tears and did wipe them with the hairs of her head and kissed his feet and anointed them with the ointment 39 Now when the Pharisee which had bidden him saw it he spake within himself saying This man if he were a prophet would have known who and what manner of woman this is that toucheth him for for she is a sinner 40 And Jesus answering said unto him Simon I have somewhat to say unto thee And he saith Master say on 41 There was a certain creditour which had two debters the one ought five hundred ‖ See Mat. ●8 23. pence and the other fist 42 And when they had nothing to pay he frankly forgave them both Tell me therefore which of them will love him most 43 Simon answered and said I suppose that he to whom he forgave most And he said unto him Thou hast rightly judged 44 And he turned to the woman and said unto Simon Seest thou this woman I entred into thine house thou gavest me no water for my feet but she hath washed my feet with tears and wiped them with the hairs of her head 45 Thou gavest me no kiss but this woman since the time I came in hath not ceased to kiss my feet 46 Mine head with oyl thou didst not anoint but this woman hath anointed my feet with ointment 47 Wherefore I say unto thee Her sins which are many are forgiven for she loved much but to whom little is forgiven the same loveth little 48 And he said unto her Thy sins are forgiven 49 And they that sat at meat with him began to say within themselves Who is this that forgiveth sins also 50 And he said to the woman Thy faith hath saved thee go in peace CHAP. VIII 1 Women minister unto Christ of their substance 4 Christ after he had preached from place
a race AM I not an apostle am I not free * Chap. 15.8 have I not seen Jesus Christ our Lord are not you my work in the Lord 2 If I be not an apostle unto others yet doubtless I am to you for the seal of mine apostleship are ye in the Lord. 3 Mine answer to them that do examine me is this 4 Have we not power to eat and to drink 5 Have we not power to lead about a sister a ‖ Or woman wife as well as other apostles and as the brethren of the Lord and Cephas 6 Or I onely and Barnabas have not we power to forbear working 7 Who goeth a warfare any time at his own charges who planteth a vineyard and eateth not of the fruit thereof or who feedeth a flock and eateth not of the milk of the flock 8 Say I these things as a man or saith not the law the same also 9 For it is written in the law of Moses * Deut. 25.4 Thou shalt not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treadeth out the corn Doth God take care for oxen 10 Or saith he it altogether for our sakes for our sakes no doubt this is written that he that ploweth should plow in hope and that he that thresheth in hope should be partaker of his hope 11 * Rom. 15.27 If we have sown unto you spiritual things is it a great thing if we shall reap your carnal things 12 If others be partakers of this power over you are not we rather Nevertheless we have not used this power but suffer all things lest we should hinder the gospel of Christ 13 * Num. 18.20 Deut. 10.9 and 18.1 Do ye not know that they which minister about holy things ‖ Or feed live of the things of the temple and they which wait at the altar are partakers with the altar 14 Even so hath the Lord ordained * Gal. 6.6 1 Tim. 5.17 that they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel 15 But I have used none of these things Neither have I written these things that it should be so done unto me for it were better for me to die then that any man should make my glorying void 16 For though I preach the gospel I have nothing to glory of for necessity is laid upon me yea wo is unto me if I preach not the gospel 17 For if I do this thing willingly I have a reward but if against my will a dispensation of the gospel is committed unto me 18 What is my reward then verily that when I preach the gospel I may make the gospel of Christ without charge that I abuse not my power in the gospel 19 For though I be free from all men yet have I made my self servant unto all that I might gain the more 20 And unto the Jews I became as a Jew that I might gain the Jews to them that are under the law as under the law that I might gain them that are under the law 21 To them that are without law as without law being not without law to God but under the law to Christ that I might gain them that are without law 22 To the weak became I as weak that I might gain the weak I am made all things to all men that I might by all means save ●ome 23 And this I do for the gospels sake that I may be partaker thereof with you 24 Know ye not that they which run in a race run all but one receiveth the prize So run that ye may obtain 25 And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown but we an incorruptible 26 I therefore so run not as uncertainly so fight I not as one that beateth the air 27 But I keep under my body and bring it into subjection lest that by any means when I have preached to others I my self should be a cast-away CHAP. X. 1 The sacraments of the Jews 6 are types of ours 7 and their punishments 11 examples for us 14 We must fee from idolatry 21 We must not make the Lords table the table of devils 24 and in things indifferent we must have regard of our brethren MOreover brethren I would not that ye should be ignorant how that all our fathers were under * Ex. 13 21. Num. 9.18 the cloud and all passed through * Ex. 14.22 the sea 2 And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea 3 And did all eat the same * Ex. 16.15 spiritual meat 4 And did all drink the same * Ex. 17.6 Num. 20.11 spiritual drink For they drank of that spiritual Rock that ‖ Or went with them followed them and that Rock was Christ 5 But with many of them God was not well pleased for they * Num. 26.65 were overthrown in the wilderness 6 Now these things were † Gr. our figures our examples to the intent we should not lust after evil things as * Num. 11.4 Psa 106.14 they also lusted 7 Neither be ye idolaters as were some of them as it is written * Ex. 32.6 The people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play 8 Neither let us commit fornication as some of them committed and * Num. 25.9 fell in one day three and twenty thousand 9 Neither let us tempt Christ as some of them also tempted and * Num. 21.6 were destroyed of serpents 10 Neither murmure ye as some of them also murmured and * Num. 14.37 were destroyed of the destroyer 11 Now all these things hapned unto them for ‖ Or types ensamples and they are written for our admonition upon whom the ends of the world are come 12 Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall 13 There hath no temptation taken you but ‖ Or moderate such as is common to man but God is faithful who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able but will with the temptation also make a way to escape that ye may be able to bear it 14 Wherefore my dearly beloved flee from idolatry 15 I speak as to wise men judge ye what I say 16 The cup of blessing which we bless is it not the communion of the bloud of Christ The bread which we break is it not the communion of the body of Christ 17 For we being many are one bread and one body for we are all partakers of that one bread 18 Behold Israel after the flesh are not they which eat of the sacrifices partakers of the altar 19 What say I then that the idol is any thing or that which is offered in sacrifice to idols is any thing 20 But I say that the things which the Gentiles * Deut. 32.17 Psal 106.37 sacrifice they sacrifice to devils and not to God and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils 21
old serpent called the devil and Satan which deceiveth the whole world he was cast out into the earth and his angels were cast out with him 10 And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven Now is come salvation and strength and the kingdom of our God and the power of his Christ for the accuser of our brethren is cast down which accused them before our God day and night 11 And they overcame him by the bloud of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony and they loved not their lives unto the death 12 Therefore rejoyce ye heavens and ye that dwell in them Wo to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea for the devil is come down unto you having great wrath because he knoweth that he hath but a short time 13 And when the dragon saw that he was cast unto the earth he persecuted the woman which brought forth the man childe 14 And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle that she might flie into the wilderness into her place where she is nourished for a time and times and half a time from the face of the serpent 15 And the serpent cast out of his mouth water as a flood after the woman that he might cause her to be carried away of the flood 16 And the earth helped the woman and the earth opened her mouth and swallowed up the flood which the dragon cast out of his mouth 17 And the dragon was wroth with the woman and went to make war with the remnant of her seed which keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus Christ CHAP. XIII 1 A beast riseth out of the sea with seven heads and ten borns to whom the dragon giveth his power 11 Another beast cometh up out of the earth 14 causeth an image to be made of the former beast 15 and that men should worship it 16 and receive his mark ANd I stood upon the sand of the sea and saw a beast rise up out of the sea having seven heads and ten horns and upon his horns ten crowns and upon his heads the ‖ Or names name of blasphemy 2 And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard and his feet were as the feet of a bear and his mouth as the mouth of a lion and the dragon gave him his power and his seat and great authority 3 And I saw one of his heads as it were † Gr slain wounded to death and his deadly wound was healed and all the world wondred after the beast 4 And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast and they worshipped the beast saying Who is like unto the beast who is able to make war with him 5 And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies and power was given unto him ‖ Or to make war to continue fourty and two moneths 6 And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God to blaspheme his name and his tabernacle and them that dwell in heaven 7 And it was given unto him to make war with the saints and to overcome them and power was given him over all kindreds and tongues and nations 8 And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world 9 If any man have an ear let him hear 10 He that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity * Matth. 16.52 He that killeth with the sword must be killed with the sword Here is the patience and the faith of the saints 11 And I behold another beast coming up out of the earth and he had two horns like a lamb and he spake as a dragon 12 And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast whose deadly wound was healed 13 And he doeth great wonders so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men 14 And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast saying to them that dwell on the earth that they should make an image to the beast which had the wound by a sword and did live 15 And he had power to give † Gr. treath life unto the image of the beast that the image of the beast should both speak and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed 16 And he causeth all both small and great rich and poor free and bond † Gr. to give to receive a mark in their right hand or in their foreheads 17 And that no man might buy or sell save he that had the mark or the name of the beast or the number of his name 18 Here is wisdom Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast for it is the number of a man and his number is six hundred threescore and six CHAP. XIV 1 The Lamb standing on mount Sion with his company 6 an angel preacheth the gospel 8 The fall of Babylon 15 The harvest of the world and putting in of the sickle 20 The vintage and winepress of the wrath of God ANd I looked and lo a Lamb stood on the mount Sion and with him an hundred fourty and four thousand having his Fathers name written in their foreheads 2 And I heard a voice from heaven as the voice of many waters and as the voice of a great thunder and I heard the voice of harpers harping with their harps 3 And they sung as it were a new song before the throne and before the four beasts and the elders and no man could learn that song but the hundred and fourty and four thousand which were redeemed from the earth 4 These are they which were not defiled with women for they are virgins these are they which follow the Lamb whithersoever he goeth these † Gr. were bought were redeemed from among men being the first-fruits unto God and to the Lamb. 5 And in their mouth was found no guile for they are without fault before the throne of God 6 And I saw another angel flie in the midst of heaven having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth and to every nation and kindred and tongue and people 7 Saying with a loud voice Fear God and give glory to him for the hour of his judgement is come * Psal 146.5.6 Act. 14.15 and worship him that made heaven and earth and the sea and the fountains of waters 8 And there followed another angel saying * Isa 21.9 Jer. 51.8 Chap. 18.2 Babylon is faln is faln that great city because she made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication 9 And the third angel followed them saying with a loud voice
Babylon came in remembrane before God * Jer. 25.15 to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath 20 And every island fled away and the moutains were not found 21 And there fell upon men a great hail out of heaven every stone about the weight of a talent and men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail for the plague thereof was exceeding great CHAP. XVII 3 4 A woman arayed in purple and scarlet with a golden cup in her band sitteth upon the beast 5 which is great Babylon the mother of all abominations 9 The interpretation of the seven heads 12 and the ten horns 14 The victory of the Lamb. 16 The punishment of the whore ANd there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials and talked with me saying unto me Come hither I will shew unto thee the judgement of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters 2 With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication and the inhabiters of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication 3 So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet-coloured beast full of names of blasphemy having seven heads and ten horns 4 And the woman was arayed in purple and scarlet colour † Gr. guilded decked with gold and precious stone and pearls having a golden cup in her hand full or abominations and silthiness of her fornication 5 And upon her forehead was a name written MYSTERY BABYLON THE GREAT THE MOTHER OF ‖ Or fornications HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH 6 And I saw the woman drunken with the bloud of the saints and with the bloud of the martyrs of Jesus and when I saw her I wondred with great admitation 7 And the angel said unto me Wherefore didst thou marvel I will tell thee the mystery of the woman and of the beast that carrieth her which hath the seven heads and ten horns 8 The beast that thou sawest was and is not and shall ascend out of the bottom less pit and go into perdition and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world when they behold the beast that was and is not and yet is 9 And here is the minde which hath wisdom The seven heads are seven mountains on which the woman sitteth 10 And there are seven kings five are fain and one is and the other is not yet come and when he cometh he must continue a short space 11 And the beast that was and is not even he is the eighth and is of the seven and goeth into perdition 12 And the ten horns which thou sawest are ten kings which have received no kingdom as yet but receive power as kings one hour with the beast 13 These have one minde and shall give their power and strength unto the beast 14 These shall make war with the Lamb and the Lamb shall overcome them * 1 Tim. 6.15 Chap. 19 16 for he is Lord of lords and King of kings and they that are with him are called and chosen and faithful 15 And he saith unto me The waters which thou sawest where the whore sitteth are peoples and multitudes and nations and tongues 16 And the ten horns which thou sawest upon the beast these shall hate the whore and shall make her desolate and naked and shall eat her flesh and burn her with fire 17 For God hath put in their hearts to fulfil his will and to agree and give their kingdom unto the beast until the words of God shall be fulfilled 18 And the woman which thou sawest is that great city which reigneth over the kings of the earth CHAP. XVIII 2 Babylon is faln 4 The people of God commanded to depart out of her 9 The kings of the earth 11 with the merchants and mariners lament over her 20 The saints rejoyce for the judgements of God upon her ANd after these things I saw another angel come down from heaven having great power and the earth was lightned with his glory 2 And he cried mightily with a strong voice saying * Cha. 14.8 Babylon the great is fain is fain and is become the habitation of devils and the hold of every foul spirit and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird 3 For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her and the merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the ‖ Or power abundance of her delicacies 4 And I heard another voice from heaven saying * Jer. 51.6 Come out of her my people that ye be not partakers of her sins and that ye receive not of her plagues 5 For her sins have reached unto heaven and God hath remembred her iniquities 6 Reward her even as she rewarded you and double unto her double according to her works in the cup which she hath filled fill to her double 7 How much she hath glorified her self and lived deliciously so much torment and sorrow give her for she saith in her heart I sit a * Isa 47.8 queen and am no widow and shall see no sorrow 8 Therefore shall her plagues come in one day death and mourning and samine and she shall be utterly burnt with fire for strong is the Lord God who judgeth her 9 And the kings of the earth who have committed fornication and lived deliciously with her * Ezek. 26. ●7 shall bewail her and lament for her when they shall see the smoke of her burning 10 Standing afar off for the fear of her torment saying Alas alas that great city Babylon that mighty city for in one hour is thy judgement come 11 And the merchants of the earth shall weep and mourn over her for no man buyeth * Ezek. 27.27 her merchandise any more 12 The merchandise of gold and silver and precious stones and of pearls and fine linen and purple and silk and scarlet and all ‖ Or sweet thyine wood and all manner vessels of ivory and all manner vessels of most precious wood and of brass and iron and marble 13 And cinnamon and odours and ointments and frankincense and wine and oyl and fine flour and wheat and beasts and sheep and horses and chariots and ‖ Or. bodies slaves and souls of men 14 And the fruits that thy soul lusted after are departed from thee and all things which were dainty and goodly are d●parted from thee and thou shalt finde them no more at all 15 The merchants of these things which were made rich by her shall stand afar off for the fear of her torment weeping and wailing 16 And saying Alas alas that great city that was clothed in fine linen and purple and searlet and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls 17 For in one
