IV. 1 Deberah and Barak deliver Israel from Jabin and Sisera 18 Jael killeth Sisera ANd the children of Israel again did evil in the sight of the LORD when Ehud was dead 2 And the LORD sold them into the hand of Jabin king of Canaan that reigned in Hazor the captain of whose host was Sisera which dwelt in Harosheth of the Gentiles 3 And the children of Israel cried unto the LORD for he had nine hundred chariots of iron and twenty years he mightily oppressed the children of Israel 4 ¶ And Deboral a prophetess the wife of Lapidoth she judged Israel at that time 5 And she dwelt under the palm-tree of Deborah between Ramah and Beth-el in mount Ephraim and the children of Israel came up to her for judgement 6 And she sent and called Barak the son of Abinoam out of Kedesh-naphtali and said unto him Hath not the LORD God of Israel commanded saying Go and draw toward mount Tabor and take with thee ten thousand men of the children of Naphtali and of the children of Zebulun 7 And I will draw unto thee to the * Psal 83.9 10. river Kishon Sisera the captain of Jabins army with his chariots and his multitude and I will deliver him into thine hand 8 And Barak said unto her If thou wilt go with me then I will go but if thou wilt not go with me then I will not go 9 And she said I will surely go with thee notwithstanding the journey that thou takest shall not be for thine honour for the LORD shall sell Sisera into the hand of a woman And Deborah arose and went with Barak to Kedesh 10 ¶ And Barak called Zebulun and Naphtali to Kedesh and he went up with ten thousand men at his feet and Deborah went up with him 11 Now Heber the Kenite which was of the children of * Numb 10.29 Hobab the father in law of Moses had severed himself from the Kenites and pitched his tent unto the plain of Zaanaim which is by Kedesh 12 And they shewed Sisera that Barak the son of Abinoam was gone up to mount Tabor 13 And Sisera †Heb. gathered by crâ—â— or proclamation gathered together all his chariots even nine hundred chariots of iron and all the people that were with him from Harosheth of the GentileÌ„s unto the river of Kishon 14 And Deborah said unto Barak Up for this is the day in which the LORD hath delivered Sisera into thine hand is not the LORD gone out before thee So Barak went down from mount Tabor and ten thousand men after him 15 And * Psal â—â— 9.10 the LORD discomfited Sisera and all his chariots and all his host with the edge of the sword before Barak so that Sisera lighted down off his chariot and fled away on his feet 16 But Barak pursued after the chariots and after the host unto Harosheth of the Gentiles and all the host of Sisera fell upon the edge of the sword and there was not †Heb. unto ouâ— a man left 17 Howbeit Sisera fled away on his feet to the tent of Jael the wife of Heber the Kenite for there was peace between Jabin the king of Hazor and the house of Heber the Kenite 18 ¶ And Jael went out to meet Sisera and said unto him Turn in my lord turn in to me fear not and when he had turned in unto her into the tent she covered him with a ‖ Or rug or Haâ—ket mantle 19 And he said unto her Give me I pray thee a little water to drink for I am thirsty and she opened * Ch. 5.25 bottle of milk and gave him drink and covered him 20 Again he said unto her Stand in the door of the tent and it shall be when any man doth come and enquire of thee and say Is there any man here that thou shalt say No. 21 Then Jael Hebers wife took a nail of the tent and †Heb. put took an hammer in her hand and went softly unto him and smote the nail into his temples and fastned it into the ground for he was fast asleep and weary so he died 22 And behold as Barak pursued Sisera Jael came out to meet him and said unto him Come and I will shew thee the man whom thou seekest And when he came into her tent behold Sisera lay dead and the nail was in his temples 23 So God subdued on that day Jabin the king of Canaan before the children of Israel 24 And the hand of the children of Israel †Heb. going went and was bard prospered and prevailed against Jabin the king of Canaan until they had destroyed Jabin king of Canaan CHAP. LXXV 1 The prophet praiseth God 2 He promiseth to judge uprightly 4. that thy name is near thy wondrous works declare 2 ‖ Or when I shall take a set time When I shall receive the congregation I will judge up rightly 3 The earth and all the inhabitants thereof are dissolved I bear up the pillars of it Selah 4 I said unto the fools Deal not foolishly and to the wicked Lift not up the horn 5 Lift not up your horn on high speak not with a stiff neck 6 For promotion cometh neither from the east nor from the west nor from the †Heb. desert south 7 But God is the judge he putteth down one and setteth up another 8 For in the hand of the LORD there is a cup and the wine is red it is full of mixture and he poureth out of the same but the dregs thereof all the wicked of the earth shall wring them out and drink them 9 But I will declare for ever I will sing praises to the God of Jacob. 10 All the horns of the wicked also will I cut off but the horns of the righteous shall be exalted PSAL. LXXVI 1 A declaration of Gods majesty in the church 11 An exhortation to serve him reverently ¶ To the chief musician on Neginoth A psalm or song ‖ Or for Asaph of Asaph IN Judah is God known his name is great in Israel 2 In Solem also is his tabernacle and his dwelling-place in Zion 3 There brake he the arrows of the bowe the shield and the sword and the battel Selah 4 Thou art more glorious and excellent then the mountains of prey 5 The stout-hearted are spoiled they have slept their sleep and none of the men of might have found their hands 6 At thy rebuke O God of Jacob both the chariot and horse are cast into a dead sleep 7 Thou even thou art to be feared and who may stand in thy sight when once thou art angry 8 Thou didst cause judgement to be heard from heaven the earth feared and was still 9 When God arose to judgement to save all the meek of the earth Selah 10 Surely the wrath of man shall praise thee the remainder of wrath shalt thou restrain 11 Vow and pay unto the LORD your God let all that be round about him bring presents †Heb. to fear unto him that ought to be feared 12 He shall cut off the spirit of princes he is terrible to the kings of the earth PSAL. LXXVII 1 The psalmist sheweth what fierce combat he had with diffidence 10 The victory which he had consideration of Gods great and gracious works ¶ To the chief musician to Jeduthun A psalm ‖ Or for Asaph of Asaph I Cried unto God with my voice even unto God with my voice and he gave ear unto me 2 In the day of my trouble I sought the Lord †Heb. my hand my sore ran in the night and ceased not my soul refused to be comforted 3 I remembred God and was troubled I complained and my spirit was over-whelmed Selah 4 Thou holdest mine eyes waking I am so troubled that I cannot speak 5 I have considered the days of old the years of ancient times 6 I call to remembrance my song in the night I commune with mine own heart and my spirit made diligent search 7 Will the Lord cast off for ever and will he be favourable no more 8 Is his mercy clean gone for ever doth his promise fail †Heb. to ceâ—â—ration and generation for evermore 9 Hath God forgotten to be gracious hath he in anger shut up his tender mercies Selah 10 And I said This is my infirmity but I will remember the years of the right hand of the most High 11 I will remember the works of the LORD surely I will remember thy wonders of old 12 I will meditate also of all thy work and talk of thy doings 13 Thy way O God is in the sanctuary who is so great a God as our God 14 Thou art the God that doest wonders thou hast declared thy strength among the people 15 Thou hast with thine arm redeemed thy people the sons of Jacob and Joseph Selah 16 The waters saw thee O God the waters saw thee they were afraid the depths also were troubled 17 †Heb. the clouds were poured forth with water The clouds poured out water the skies sent out a sound thine arrows also went abroad 18 The voice of thy thunder was in the heaven the lightnings lightned the world the earth trembled and shook 19 Thy way is in the sea and thy path in the great waters and thy foot-steps are not known 20 * Exod. 14.19 Thou leddest thy people like a flock by the hand of Moses and Aaron PSAL. LXXVIII 1 An exhortation both to learn and to preach the law of God 9 The story of Gods wrath against the incredulous and disobedient 67 The Israelites being rejected God chose Judah Zion and David ¶ ‖ Or A psalm for Asaph to give instruction Maschil of Asaph GIve ear O my people to my law incline your ears to the words of my mouth 2 * Ps 49.4 Mat. 13.35 I will open my mouth in a parable I will utter dark sayings of old 3 Which we have heard and known and our fathers have told us 4 We will not hide them from their children shewing to the generation to come the praises of the LORD and his strength and his wonderful works that he hath done 5 For he established a testimony in Jacob and appointed a law in Israel which he commanded our fathers * Deu. 4.9 6.7 that they should make them known to their children 6 That the generation to come might know them even the children which should be born who should arise and declare them to their children 7 That they might sâ—t their hope in God and not forget the works of God but keep his commandments 8 And might not be as their fathers a stubborn and rebellious generation a generation †Heb. that prepared not their heart that set not their heart aright and whose spirit was not stedfast with God 9 The children of Ephraim being armed and †Heb. throwing forth carrying bowes turned back in the day of battel 10 They kept not the covenant of God and refused to walk in his law 11 And forgat his works and his wonders that he had shewed them 12 Marvellous things did he in the sight of their fathers in the land of Egypt in the field of Zoan 13 * Exod. 14.21 He divided the sea and caused them to pass through and he made the waters to stand as an heap 14 * Ex. 13.25 14.24 In the day-time also he led them with a cloud and all the night with a light of fire 15 * Ex. 17.6 Numb 20.11 Ps 105 4â— 1 Cor. 20. 4. He were bed a path He made a way to his anger he spared not their soul from death but gave ‖ Or their beasts to the murrain Exod. 9.3 their life over to the pestilence 52 * Exod. 12.29 And smote all the first-born in Egypt the chief of their strength in the tabernacles of Ham 52 But made his own people to go forth like sheep and guided them in the wilderness like a flock 53 And he led them on safely so that they feared not but the sea * Ex. 14.27 and 15.10 †Heb. covered overwhelmed their enemies 54 And he brought them to the border of his sanctuary even to this mountain which his right hand had purchased 55 He cast out the heathen also before them and * Jol. 13.7 divided them an inheritance by line made the tribes of Israel to dwell in their tents 56 Yet they tempted and provoked the most high God and kept not his testimonies 57 But turned back and dealt unfaithfully like their fathers they were turned aside like a deceitful bowe 58 * Deut. 32.21 For they provoked him to anger with their high places and moved him to jealousie with their graven images 59 When God heard this he was wroth and greatly abhorred Israel 60 * 1 Sam. 4.11 So that he forsook the tabernacle of Shiloh the tent which he placed among men 61 And delivered his strength into captivity and his glory into the enemies hand 62 He gave his people over also unto the sword and was wroth with his inheritance 63 The fire consumed their young men and their maidens were not †Heb. prâ—dsed given to marriage 64 Their priests fell by the sword and their widows made no lamentation 65 Then the LORD awaked as one out of sleep and like a mighty man that shouteth by reason of wine 66 And he smote his enemies in the hinder parts he put them to a perpetual reproach 67 Moreover he refused the tabernacle of Joseph and chose not the tribe of Ephraim 68 But chose the tribe of Judah the mount Zion which he loved 69 And he built his sanctuary like high palaces like the earth which he hath †Heb. founded established for ever 70 * 1 Sam. 16.11 2 Sam. 7.8 He chose David also his servant and took him from the sheepfolds 71 †Heb. from after From following the ews great with young he brought him * 2 Sam. 5.2 1 Chr. 11.2 to feed Jacob his people and Israel his inheritance 72 So he fed them according to the integrity of his heart and guided them by the skilfulness of his hands PSAL. LXXIX 1 The psalmist complaineth of the desâ—lation of Jerusalem 8 He prayeth for deliverance 13 and promiseth thankfulness ¶ A psalm ‖ Or for Asaph of Asaph O God the heathen are come into thine inheritance thy holy temple have they defiled they have laid Jerusalem on heaps 2 The dead bodies of thy servants have they given to be meat unto the fowls of the heaven the flesh of thy saints unto the beasts of the earth 3 Their bloud have they shed like water round
12 I will praise thee O Lord my God with all my heart and I will glorifie thy name for evermore 13 For great is thy mercy toward me and thou hast delivered my soul from the lowest ‖ Or grace hell 14 O God the proud are risen against me and the assemblies of †Heb. terrible violent men have sought after my soul and have not set thee before them 15 * Deu. 34 6. CXXXIII The benefit of the communion of saints ¶ A song of degrees of David BEhold how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell †Heb. even together together in unity 2 It is like the precious ointment upon the head that ran down upon the beard even Aarons beard that went down to the skirts of his garments 3 As the dew of Hermon and as the dew that descended upon the mountains of Zion for there the LORD commanded the blessing even life for evermore PSAL. CXXXIV An exhortation to bless God ¶ A song of degrees BEhold bless ye the LORD all ye servants of the LORD which b◠night stand in the house of the LORD 2 Lift up your hands ‖ Or in holiness in the sanctuary and bless the LORD 3 The LORD that made heaven and earth bless thee out of Zion PSAL. CXXXV An exhortation to praise God for his mercy 5 for his power 8 for his judgements 15 The vanity of idols 19 An exhortation to bless God PRaise ye the LORD praise ye the name of the LORD praise him O ye servant of the LORD 2 Ye that stand in the house of the LORD in the courts of the house of our God 3 Praise ye the LORD for the LORD is good sing praises unto his name for it is pleasant 4 For the LORD hath chosen Jacob unto himself and Israel for his peculiar treasure 5 For I know that the LORD is great that our Lord is above all gods 6 Whatsoever the LORD pleased that did he in heaven and in earth in the seas and all deep places 7 * Jer. 10.13 He causeth the vapour to ascend from the ends of the earth he maketh lightnings for the rain the bringeth the wind out of his treasuries 8 * Ex. 12.29 Who smote the first-born of Egypt †Heb. from man unto beast both of man and beast 9 Who sent tokens and wonders into the midst of thee O Egypt upon Pharaoh and upon all his servants 10 * Num. 21.24 25 26 34 35. Bel in Babylon and I will bring forth out of his mouth that which he hath swallowed up and the nations shall not flow together any more unto him yea the wall of Babylon shall fall 45 My people go ye out of the midst of her and deliver ye every man his soul from the fierce anger or the LORD 46 And lest your heart faint and ye fear for the rumour that shall be heard in the land a rumour shall both come one year and after that in another year shall come a rumour and violence in the land ruler against ruler 47 Therefore behold the days come that I will †Heb. visit upon do judgement upon the graven images of Babylon and her whole land shall be confounded and all her slain shall fall in the midst of her 48 Then the heaven and the earth and all that is therein shall sing for Babylon for the her graven images and through all her land the wounded shall groan 53 Though Babylon should mount up to heaven and though she should fortifie the height of her strength yet from me shall spoilers come her saith the LORD 54 A found of a cry cometh from Babylon and great destruction from the land of the Caldeans 55 Because the LORD hath spoiled Babylon and destroyed out of her the great voice when her waves do roar like great waters a noise of their voice is uttered 56 Because the spoiler is come upon her even upon Babylon and her mighty men are taken every one of their bows is broken for the LORD God of recompences shall surely requite 57 And I will make drunk her princes and her wise men her captains and her rulers and her mighty men and they shall sleep a perpetual sleep and not wake saith the King whose name is the LORD of hosts 58 Thus saith the LORD of hosts ‖ Or The walls of broad Babylon The broad walls of Babylon shall be utterly ‖ Or made naked broken and her high gates shall be burnt with fire and the people shall labour in vain and the folk in the fire and they shall be weary 59 ¶ The word which Jeremiah the prophet commanded Seraiah the son of Neriah the son of Maaseiah when he went ‖ Or on the behalf of with Zedekiah the king of Judah into Babylon in the fourth year of his reign and this Seraiah was a ‖ Or prince of Menucha or chief chamberlain quiet prince 60 So Jeremiah wrote in a book all the evil that should come upon Babylon even all these words that are written against Babylon 61 And Jeremiah said to Seraiah When thou comest to Babylon and shalt see and shalt read all these words 62 Then shalt thou say O LORD thou hast spoken against this place to cut it off that none shall remain in it neither man nor beast but that it shall be †Heb. desolations desolate for ever 63 And it shall be when thou hast made an end of reading this book that thou shalt binde a stone to it cast it into the midst of Euphrates 64 And thou shalt say Thus shall Babylon sink and shall not rise from the evil that I will bring upon her and they shall be weary Thus far are the words of Jeremiah CHAP. LII 1 Zedekiah rebelleth 4 Jerusalem is besieged and taken 8 Zedekiahs sons killed and his own eyes put out 12 Nebuzar-adan burneth and spoileth the city 24 He carrieth away the captives 31 Evil-merodach advanceth Jehoiachin ZEdekiah was * 2 Kin. 24.18 one and twenty year old when he †Heb. reigned began to reign and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem and his mothers name was Hamutal the daughter of Jeremiah of Libnah 2 And he did that which was evil in the eyes of the LORD according to all that Jehoiakim had done 3 For through the anger of the LORD it came to pass in Jerusalem and Judah till he had cast them out from his presence that Zedekiah revelled against the king of Babylon 4 ¶ And it came to pass in the * 2 Kin. 25.1 Ch. 39.1 ninth year of his reign in the the moneth in the tenth day of the moneth that Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon came he and all his army against Jerusalem and pitched against it and built forts against it round about 5 So the city was besieged unto the eleventh year of king Zedekiah 6 And in the fourth moneth in the ninth day of the moneth the famine was fore in the city so that there was no bread for the people of the land 7 Then the city was broken up and all the men of war fled and went forth out of the city by night by the way of the gate between the two walls which was by the kings garden now the Caldeans were by the city round about and they went by the way of the plain 8 ¶ But the army of the Caldeans pursued after the king and overtook 9 Then they took the king and carried him up unto the king of Babylon to Riblah in the land of Hamath where he gave judgement upon him 10 And the king of Babylon slew the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes he slew also all the princes of Judah in Riblah 11 Then he †Heb. blinded put out the eyes of Zedekiah and the king of Babylon bound him in ‖ Or fetters chains and carried him to Babylon and put him in †Heb. house of the wards prison till the day of his death 12 ¶ Now in the fifth moneth in the tenth day of the moneth which was the nineteenth year of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon came Nebuzar-adam ‖ Or chief marshal †Heb. chief of the executioners or slaughter-men And so v. ◠14. c. captain of the guard which †Heb. stood before served the king of Babylon into Jerusalem 13 And burnt the house of the LORD and the kings house and all the houses of Jerusalem and all the houses of the great men burnt he with fire 14 And all the army of the Caldeans that were with the captain of the guard brake down all the walls of Jerusalem round about 15 Then Nebuzar-adan the captain of the guard carried away captive certain of the poor of the people and the residue of the people that remained in the city and those that fell away that fell to the king of Babylon and the rest of the multitude 16 But Nebuzar-adan the captain of the guard left certain of the poor of the land for vine-dressers and for husbandmen 17 Also the * Ch. 27.19 pillars of brass that were in the house of the LORD and the bases and the brasen sea that was in the house of the LORD the Caldeans brake and carried all the brass of them to Babylon 18 The caldrons also and the ‖ Or instruments to remove the ashes shovels and the snuffers and the ‖ Or basons bowls and the spoons and all the vessels of brass wherewith they ministred took they away 19 And the basons and the ‖ Or censers fire-pans and the bowls and the caldrons and the candlesticks and the spoons and the cups that which was of gold in gold and that which was of silver in silver took the captain of the guard away 20 The two pillars one sea and twelve brasen bulls that were under the bases which king Solomon had made in the house of the LORD †Heb. their brass the brass of all these vessels was without weight 21 And concerning the * 1 Kin. 7.15 2 Kin. 25.17 2 Chr. 3.15 pillars the height of one pillar was eighteen cubits and a †Heb. threed fillet of twelve cubits did compass it and the thickness thereof was four singers it was hollow 22 And a chapiter of brass was upon it and the height of one chapiter was five cubits with net-work and pomegranates upon the chapiters round about all of brass the second pillar also and the pomegranates were like unto these 23 And there were ninety and six pomegranates on a side and all the
the Assyrian was a cedar in Lebanon †Heb. fair of branches with fair branches and with a shadowing shroud and of an high stature and his top was among the thick boughs 4 The waters ‖ Or nourished made him great the deep ‖ Or brought him up set him up on high with her rivers running round about his plants and sent out her ‖ Or conduits little rivers unto all the trees of the field 5 Therefore his height was exalted above all the trees of the field and his boughs were multiplied and his branches became long because of the multitude of waters ‖ Or when it sent them forth when he shot forth 6 All the * Dan 4. fowls of heaven made their nests in his boughs and under his branches did all the beasts of the field bring forth their young and under his shadow dwelt all great nations 7 Thus was he fair in his greatness in the longth of his branches for his root was by great waters 8 The cedars in the * Gen. â— garden of God could not hide him the fir-trees were not like his boughs and the cheâ—nut trees were not like his branches not any tree in the garden of God was like unto him in his beauty 9 I have made him fair by the multitude of his branches so that all the trees of Eden that were in the garden of God envied him 10 ¶ Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD Because thou hast lifted up thy self in height and he hath shot up his top among the thick boughs and his heart is lifted up in his height 11 I have therefore delivered him into the hand of the mighty one of the heathen †Heb. in dâ—ink be shall aâ— unto kinâ— he shall surely deal with him I have driven him out for his wickedness 12 And strangers the terrible of the nations have cut him off and have left him upon the mountains and in all the valleys his branches are faln and his boughs are broken by all the rivers of the land and all the people of the earth are gone down from his shadow and have left him 13 Upon his ruine shall all the fowls of the heaven remain and all the beasts of the field shall be upon his branches 14 To the end that none of all the trees by the waters exalt themselves for their height neither shoot up their top among the thick boughs neither their tree ‖ Or stand upon themselves for their height stand up in their height all that drink water for they are all delivered unto death to the nether parts of the earth in the midst of the children of men with them that go down to the pit 15 Thus saith the Lord GOD In the day when he went down to the grave I caused a mourning I covered the deep for him and I restrained the flouds thereof and the great waters were stayed and I caused Lebanon †Heb. to be black to mourn for him and all the trees of the field fainted for him 16 I made the nations to shake at the sound of his fall when I cast him down to hell with them that descend into the pit and all the trees of Eden the choice and best of Lebanon all that drink water shall be comforted in the nether parts of the earth 17 They also went down into hell with him unto them that be slain with the sword and they that were his arm that dwelt under his shadow in the midst of the heathen 18 ¶ To whom art thou thus like in glory and in greatness among the trees of Eden yet shall thou be brought down with the trees of Eden unto the nether parts of the earth thou shalt lie in the midst of the uncircumcised with them that be slain by the sword this is Pharaoh and all his multitude saith the Lord GOD. CHAP. XXXII 1 A lamentation for the fearful fall of Egypt 11 The sword of Babylon shall destroy it 17 It shall be brought down to hell among all the uncircumcised nations ANd it came to pass in the twelfth year in the twelfth moneth in the first day of the moneth that the word of the LORD came unto me saying 2 Son of man take up a lamentation for Pharaoh king of Egypt and say unto him Thou art like a young lion of the nation and thou art aâ— a whale in the seas and thou camest forth with thy rivers ‖ Or â—eaâ—on and troubledst the waters with thy feet and fouledst their rivers 3 Thus saith the Lord GOD I will therefore * Chap. 12 13. 17.20 spread out my net over thee with a company of many people and they shall bring thee up in my net 4 Then will I leave thee upon the land I will cast thee forth upon the open field and will cause all the fowls of the heaven to remain upon thee and I will fill the beasts of the whole earth with thee 5 And I will lay thy flesh upon the mountains and fill the valleys with thy height 6 I will also water with thy bloud ‖ Or the land of thy swimming the land wherein thou swimmest even to the mountains and the river shall be full of thee 7 And when I shall ‖ Or extinâ—â—st put thee out * Isa 13.12 Joâ—l 2.21 and 3.15 Matth. 24 2â— I will cover the heaven and make the stars thereof dark I will cover the sun with a cloud and the moon shall not give her light 8 All the †Heb. â—â—it of the light in heaven brought lights of heaven will I make †Heb. them dark dark over thee and set darkness upon thy land saith the Lord GOD. 9 I will also †Heb. provâ—ke to anger of grief vex the hearts of many people when I shall bring thy destruction among the nations into the countreys which thou haâ—t not known 10 Yea I will make many people amazed at thee and their kings shall be horribly afraid for thee when I shall brandish my sword before them and they shall tremble at every moment every man for his own life in the day of thy fall 11 ¶ For thus saith the Lord GOD The sword of the king of Babylon shall come upon thee 12 By the swords of the mighty will I cause thy multitude to fall the terrible of the nations all of them and they shall spâ—â—l the pomp of Egypt and all the multitude thereof shall be destroyed 13 I will destroy also all the beasts thereof from besides the great waters neither shall the foot of man trouble them any more nor the hoofs of beasts trouble them 14 Then will I make their waters deep and cause their rivers to run like oyl saith the Lord GOD. 15 When I shall make the land of Egypt desolate and the countrey shall be †Heb. desolate from 〈◊〉 fulness thereof destitute of that whereof it was full when I shall smite all them that dwell therein
A famine of the word threatned THus hath the Lord GOD shewed unto me and behold a basket of summer-fruit 2 And he said Amos what seest thou and I said A basket of summer-fruit Then said the LORD unto me The end is come upon my people of Israel I will not again pass by them any more 3 And the songs of the temple †Heb. shall howl shall be howlings in that day saith the Lord GOD there shall be many dead bodies in every place they shall cast them forth †Heb. be silent with silence 4 ¶ Hear this O ye that swallow up the needy even to make the poor of the land to fail 5 Saying When will the ‖ Or moneth new-moon be gone that we may sell corn and the sabbath that we may †Heb. open set forth wheat making the ephah small and the shekel great and †Heb. perverting the balances of deceit falsifying the balances by deceit 6 That we may buy the poor for * Chap. 2.6 silver and the needy for a pair of shoes yea and sell the refuse of the wheat 7 The LORD hath sworn by the excellency of Jacob Surely I will never forget any of their works 8 Shall not the land tremble for this and every one mourn that dwelleth therein and it shall rise up wholly as a floud and it shall be cast out and drowned as by the floud of Egypt 9 And it shall come to pass in that day saith the Lord GOD that I will cause the sun to go down at noon and I will darken the earth in the clear day 10 And I will turn your feasts into mourning and all your songs into lamentation and I will bring up sackcloth upon all loyns and baldness upon every head and I will make it as the mourning of an onely son and the end thereof as a bitter day 11 ¶ Behold the days come saith the Lord GOD that I will send a famine in the land not a famine of bread nor a thirst for water but of hearing the words of the LORD 12 And they shall wander from sea to sea and from the north even to the east they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the LORD and shall not finde it 13 In that day shall the fair virgins and young men faint for thirst 14 They that swear by the sin of Samaria and say Thy god O Dan liveth and the manner of Beer-sheba liveth even they shall fall and never rise up again CHAP. IX 1 The certainty of the desolation 11 The restoring of the tabernacle of David I Saw the Lord standing upon the altar and he said Smite the ‖ Or chapiter or knop lintel of the door that the posts may shake and ‖ Or wound them cut them in the head all of them and I will slay the last of them with the sword he that fleeth of them shall not flee away and he that escapeth of them shall not be delivered 2 * Psal 139.8 c. must be changed 17 And it hapned that when I had heard it I stood up upon my feet and hearkned and behold there was a voice that spake and the sound of it was like the sound of many waters 18 And it said Behold the days come that I will begin to draw nigh and to vnit them that dwell upon the earth 19 And will begin to make inquisition of them what they be that have hurt unjustly with their unrighteousness and when the affliction of Sion shall be fulfilled 20 And when the world that shall begin to vanish away shall be ‖ Ot â—â—aâ—â—d finished then will I shew these tokens the books shall be opened before the firmament and they shall see all together 21 And the children of a year old shall speak with their voices the women with childe shall bring forth untimely children of three or four moneths old and they shall live and be raised up 22 And suddenly shall the sown places appear unsown the full store-houses shall suddenly be found empty 23 And the trumpet shall give a sound which when every man heareth they shall be suddenly afraid 24 At that time shall friends fight one against another like enemies and the earth shall stand in fear with those that dwell therein the springs of the fountains shall stand still and in three hours they shall not run 25 Whosoever remaineth from all these that I have told thee shall escape and see my salvation and the end of your world 26 And the men that are received shall see it who have not tasted death from their birth and the heart of the inhabitants shall be changed and turned into another meaning 27 For evil shall be put out and deceit shall be quenched 28 As for faith it shall flourish corruption shall be overcome and the truth which hath been so long without fruit shall be declared 29 And when he talked with me behold I looked by little and little upon him before whom I stood 30 And these words said he unto me I am come to shew thee the time of the night to come 31 If thou wilt pray yet more and fast seven days again I shall tell thee greater things ‖ See ch 13. vers 52. by day then I have heard 32 For thy voice is heard before the most High for the Mighty hath seen thy righteous dealing he hath seen also thy chastity which thou hast had ever since thy youth 33 And therefore hath he sent me to shew thee all these things and to say unto thee Be of good comfort and fear not 34 And hasten not with the times that are past to think vain things that thou mayest not hasten from the latter times 35 And it came to pass after this that I wept again and fasted seven days in like manner that I might fulfiâ— the three weeks which he told me 36 And in the eighth night was my heart vexed within me again and I began to speak before the most High 37 For my spirit was greatly set on fire and my soul was in distress 38 And I said O Lord thou speakest from the beginning of the creation even the first day and saidest thus * Gen. â— 1 Let heaven and earth be made and thy word was a perfect work 39 And then was the spirit and darknesses and silence were on every side the sound of mans voice was not yet formed 40 Then commandedst thou a fair light to come forth of thy treasures that thy work might appear 41 Upon the second day thou madest the spirit of the firmament and commandedst it to part asunder and to make a division betwixt the waters that the one part might go up and the other remain beneath 42 Upon the third day thou didst command that the waters should be gathered in the seventh part of the earth six parts hast thou died up and kept them to the intent that of these some being planted of God and tilled might serve thee 43 For as soon as thy word went forth the work was made 44 For immediately there weâ— great and innumerable fruit and many and divers pleasures for the taste and flowers of unchangeable colour and odours of wonderful smell and this was done the third day 45 * Gen. 1.14 Upon the fourth day thou commandedst that the sun should shine and the moon give her light the other for the seventh part namely where the water was gathered together might not hold them both 51 Unto Enoch thou gavest one part which was dried up the third day that he should dwell in the same part wherein are a thousand hills 52 But unto Leviathan thou gavest the seventh part namely the moist and hast kept him to be devoured of whom thou wilt and when 53 Upon the sixth day thou gavest commandment unto the earth that before thee it should bring forth beasts cattel and creeping things 54 And after these Adam also whom thou madest lord of all thy creatures

II. 1 Christ turneth water into wine 12 departeth into Capernaum and to Jerusalem 14 where he purgeth the temple of buyers and sellers 19 He foretelleth his death and resurrection 23 Many beleeved because of his miracles but he would not trust himself with them ANd the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee and the mother of Jesus was there 2 And both Jesus was called and his disciples to the marriage 3 And when they wanted wine the mother of Jesus saith unto him They have no wine 4 Jesus saith unto her Woman what have I to do with thee mine hour is not yet come 5 His mother saith unto the servants Whatsoever he saith unto you do it 6 And there were set there six water-pots of stone after the manner of the purifying of the Jews containing two or three firkins apiece 7 Jesus saith unto them Fill the water-pots with water And they filled them up to the brim 8 And he saith unto them Draw out now and bear unto the governour of the feast And they bare it 9 When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine and knew not whence it was but the servants which drew the water knew the governour of the feast called the bridegroom 10 And saith unto him Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine and when men have well drunk then that which is worse but thou hast kept the good wine until now 11 This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee and manifested forth his glory and his disciples beleeved on him 12 ¶ After this he went down to Capernaum he and his mother and his brethren his disciples and they continued there not many days 13 ¶ And the Jews pass-over was at hand Jesus went up to Jerusalem 14 And found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves and the changers of money sitting 15 And when he had made a scourge of small cords he drove them all out of the temple and the sheep and the oxen and poured out the changers money and overthrew the tables 16 And said unto them that sold doves Take these things hence make not my Fathers house an house of merchandise 17 And his disciples remembred that it was written * Psal 69.9 The zeal of thine house hath eaten me up 18 ¶ Then answered the Jews and said unto him what signe shewest thou unto us seeing that thou doest these things 19 Jesus answered and said unto them * Mat. 26.61 Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up 20 Then said the Jews Fourty and six years was this temple in building and wilt thou rear it up in three days 21 But he spake of the temple of his body 22 When therefore he was risen from the dead his disciples remembred that he had said this unto them and they beleeved the scripture and the word which Jesus had said 23 ¶ Now when he was in Jerusalem at the pass-over in the feast day many beleeved in his name when they saw the miracles which he did 24 But Jesus did not commit himself unto them because he knew all men 25 And needed not that any should testifie of man for he knew what was in man CHAP. III. 1 Christ teacheth Nicodemus the necessity of regeneration 14 of faith in his death 16 The great love of God towards the world 18 Contemnation for unbelief 23 The baptism witness and doctrine of John concerning Christ THere was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus a ruler of the Jews 2 The same came to Jesus by night and said unto him Rabbi we know that thou art a teacher come from God for no man can do these miracles that thou doest except God be with him 3 Jesus answered and said unto him Verily verily I say unto thee Except a man be born ‖ Or from above again he cannot see the kingdom of God 4 Nicodemus saith unto him How can a man be born when he is old can he enter the second time into his mothers womb be born 5 Jesus answered Verily verily I say unto thee Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of God 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit 7 Marvel not that I said unto thee Ye must be born ‖ Or from above again 8 The wind bloweth where it listeth and thou hearest the sound thereof but canst not tell whence it cometh and whither it goeth so is every one that is born of the Spirit 9 Nicodemus answered and said unto him How can these things be 10 Jesus answered and said unto him Art thou a master of Israel and knowest not these things 11 Verily verily I say unto thee We speak that we do know and testifie that we have seen and ye receive not our witness 12 If I have told you earthly things and ye believe not how shall ye believe if I tell you of heavenly things 13 And no man hath ascended up to heaven but he that came down from heaven even the Son of man which is in heaven 14 ¶ * Numb 21.9 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness even so must the Son of man be lifted up 15 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have eternal life 16 ¶ * 1 John 4.9 For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life 17
conversation of the wicked 8 For that righteous man dwelling among them in seeing and hearing vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds 9 The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgement to be punished 10 But chiefly them that walk after the flesh in the lust of uncleanness and despise ‖ Or â—ominion government * Jude 8. Presumptuous are they self-willed they are not afraid to speak evil of dignities 11 Whereas angels which are greater in power and might bring not railing accusation ‖ Some read against themselves against them before the Lord. 12 But these as natural bruit beasts made to be taken and destroyed speak evil of the things that they understand not and shall utterly perish in their own corruption 13 And shall receive the reward of unrighteousness as they that count it pleasure to riot in the day-time spots they are and blemishes sporting themselves with their own deceivings while they feast ith you 14 Having eyes full of †Gr an adulterest adultery and that cannot cease from sin beguiling unstable souls an heart they have exercised with covetous practises cursed children 15 Which have forsaken the right way and are gone astray following the way of * Num. 22.23 Jude 11. Balaam the son of Bosor who loved the wages of unrighteousness 16 But was rebuked for his iniquity the dumb ass speaking with mans voice forbad the madness of the prophet 17 * Jude 12 13. These are wells without water clouds that are carried with a tempest to whom the mist of darkness is reserved for ever 18 For when they speak great swelling words of vanity they allure through the lusts of the flesh through much wantonness those that were ‖ Or for a little or a while as some read clean escaped from them who live in errour 19 While they promise them liberty they themselves are * Joh. 8 34. Rom. 6.16 the servants of corruption for of whom a man is overcome of the same is he brought in bondage 20 For * Mat. 12.45 Heb. 6.4 if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ they are aggain intangled therein and overcome the latter end is worse with them then the beginning 21 For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness then after they have known it to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them 22 But it is hapned unto them according to the true proverb * Pr. 26.11 The dog is turned to his own vomit again and The sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire CHAP. III. He assureth them of the certainty of Christs coming to judgement against those scorners who dispute against it 8 warning the godly for the long patience of God to hasten their repentance 10 He describeth also the manner how the world shall be destroyed 11 exhorting them from the expectation thereof to all holiness of life 15 and again to think the patience of God to tend to their salvation as Paul wrote to them in his epistles THis second epistle beloved I now write unto you in both which I stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance 2 That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour 3 * 1 Tim. 4. â— 2 Tim. 3.1 Jude 18. Knowing this first that there shall come in the last days scoffers walking after their own lusts 4 And saying Where is the promise of his coming For since the fathers fell asleep all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation 5 For this they willingly are ignorant of that by the word of God the heavens were of old and the earth †Gr consisting standing out of the water and in the water 6 Whereby the world that then was being overflowed with water perished 7. But the heavens and the earth which are now by the same word are kept in store reserved unto fire against the day of judgement and perdition of ungodly men 8 But beloved be not ignorant of this one thing that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years and * Ps 90.4 a thousand years as one day 9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise as some men count slackness but is long-suffering to us-ward * Ezek. 18.32 33.17 not willing that any should perish but * 1 Tim. 2.4 that all should come to repentance 10 But * 1 Thes 5.2 the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise and the elements shall melt with fervent heat the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burnt up 11 Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness 12 Looking for and ‖ Or hasting the coming hasting unto the coming of the day of God wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved and the elements shall melt with fervent heat 13 Nevertheless we according to his promise look for * Is 65.17 66.22 Rev. 21.1 new heavens and a new earth wherein dwelleth righteousness 14 Wherefore beloved seeing that ye look for such things be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace without spot and blameless 15 And account that * Rom. 2 6. the long-suffering of our Lord is salvation even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you 16 As also in all his epistles speaking in them of these things in which are some things hard to be understood which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest as they do also the other scriptures unto their own destruction 17 Ye therefore beloved seeing ye know these things before beware lest ye also being led away with the errour of the wicked fall from your own stedfastness 18 But grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ To him be glory both now and for ever Amen ¶ The first epistle general of S. JOHN CHAP. I. 1 He describeth the person of Christ in whom we have eternal life by a communion with God 5 to which we must adjoyn holiness of life to testifie the truth of that our communion and profession of faith as also to assure us of the forgiveness of our sins by Christs death THat which was from the beginning which we have heard which we have seen with our eyes which we have looked upon and our hands have handled of the word of life 2 For the life was manifested and we have seen it and bear witness and shew unto you that eternal life which was with the Father
devil sinneth from the beginning For this purpose the Son of God was manifested that he might destroy the works of the devil 9 Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin for his seed remaineth in him and he cannot sin because he is born of God 10 In this the children of God are manifest and the children of the devil Whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God neither he that loveth not his brother 11 For this is the ‖ Or commandment message that ye heard from the beginning * Joh. 13.34 15.12 that we should love one another 12 Not as * Gen. 4.8 Cain who was of that wicked one and slew his brother And wherefore slew he him Because his own works were evil and his brothers righteous 13 Marvel not my brethren if the world hate you 14 We know that we have passed from death unto life because we love the brethren he that loveth not his brother abideth in death 15 Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him 16 Hereby perceive we the love of God because he laid down his life for us and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren 17 But * Luk. 3.11 whoso hath this worlds good and seeth his brother have need and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him how dwelleth the love of God in him 18 My little children let us not love in word neither in tongue but in deed and in truth 19 And hereby we know that we are of the truth and shall †Gr. persâ—â—â—e assure our hearts before him 20 For it our heart condemn us God is greater then our heart and knoweth all things 21 Beloved if our heart condemn us not then have we confidence towards God 22 And * Mat. 21.22 Joh. 15.7 16.23 whatsoever we ask we receive of him because we keep his commandments and do those things that are pleasing in his sight 23 And * Joh. 6.29 and 17.3 this is his commandment that we should beleeve on the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another as he gave us commandment 24 And * Joh. 15. â—0 he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him and he in him and hereby we know that he abideth in us by the Spirit which he hath given us CHAP. IV. 1 He warneth them not to beleeve all teachers who boast of the Spirit but to try them by the rules of the catholick faith 7 and by many reasons exhorteth to brotherly love BEloved beleeve not every spirit but try the spirits whether they are of God because many false prophets are gone out into the world 2 Hereby know ye the spirit of God Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God 3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God and this is that spirit of antichrist whereof you have heard that it should come and even now already is it in the world 4 Ye are of God little children and have overcome them because greater is he that is in you then he that is in the world 5 They are of the world therefore speak they of the world and the world heareth them 6 We are of God * Joh. 8 47. he that knoweth God heareth us he that is not of God heareth not us Hereby know we the Spirit of truth and the spirit of errour 7 Beloved let us love one another for love is of God and every one that loveth is born of God and knoweth God 8 He that loveth not knoweth not God for God is love 9 * Joh. 3.16 In this was manifested the love of God towards us because that God sent his onely begotten Son into the world that we might live through him 10 Herein is love not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins 11 Beloved if God so loved us we ought also to love one another 12 * 1 Tim. 6.16 No man hath seen God at any time If we love one another God dwelleth in us and his love is perfected in us 13 Hereby know we that we dwell in him and he in us because he hath given us of his Spirit 14 And we have seen and do testifie that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world 15 Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God God dwelleth in him and he in God 16 And we have known and beleeved the love that God hath to us God is love and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God and God in him 17 Herein is †Gr. love with us our love made perfect that we may have boldness in the day of judgement because as he is so are we in this world 18 There is no fear in love but perfect love casteth out fear because fear hath torment he that feareth is not made perfect in love 19 We love him because he first loved us 20 If a man say I love God and hateth his brother he is a liar for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen how can he love God whom he hath not seen 21 And * Joh. 13.34 15.12 this commandment have we from him that he who loveth God love his brother also CHAP. V. He that loveth God loveth his children and keepeth his commandments 3 which to the faithful are light and not grievous 9 Jesus is the Son of God able to save us 14 and to bear our prayers which we make for our selves and for others WHosoever beleeveth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him 2 By this we know that we love the children of God when we love God and keep his commandments 3 For this is the love of God that we keep his commandments and * Mat. 11.30 his commandments are not grievous 4 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world and this is the victory that overcometh the world even our faith 5 Who is he that overcometh the world but he that beleeveth that Jesus is the Son of God 6 This is he that came by water and bloud even Jesus Christ not by water onely but by water and bloud and it is the Spirit that beareth witness because the Spirit is truth 7 For there are three that bear record in heaven the Father the Word and the holy Ghost and these three are one 8 And there are three that bear witness in earth the spirit and the water and the bloud and these three agree in one 9 If we receive the witness of men the witness of God is greater for this is the witness of God which he hath testified of his Son 10 He that beleeveth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself he that beleeveth
their eyes CHAP. VIII 1 At the opening of the seventh seal 2 seven angels had seven trumpets given them 6 Four of them sound their trumpets and great plagues follow 3 Another angel putteth incense to the prayers of the saints on the golden altar ANd when he had opened the seventh seal there was silence in heaven about the space of half an hour 2 And I saw the seven angels which stood before God and to them were given seven trumpets 3 And another angel came and stood at the alter having a golden censer and there was given unto him much incense that he should ‖ Or add it to the prayâ—â—â— offer it with the prayers of all saints upon the golden altar which was before the throne 4 And the smoke of the incense which came with the prayers of the saints ascended up before God out of the angels hand 5 And the angel took the censer and filled it with fire of the altar and cast it into the earth and there were voices and thundrings and lightnings and an earthquake 6 And the seven angels which had the seven trumpets prepared themselves to sound 7 The first angel sounded and there followed hail and fire mingled with bloud and they were cast upon the earth and the third part of trees was burnt up and all green grass was burnt up 8 And the second angel sounded and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea and the third part of the sea became bloud 9 And the third part of the creatures which were in the sea and had life died and the third part of the ships were destroyed 10 And the third angel sounded and there fell a great star from heaven burning as it were a lamp and it fell upon the third part of the rivers and upon the fountains of waters 11 And the name of the star is called Woormwood and the third part of the waters became woormwood and many men died of the waters because they were made bitter 12 And the fourth angel sounded and the third part of the sun was smitten and the third part of the moon and the third part of the stars so as the third part of them was darkned and the day shone not for a third part of it and the night likewise 13 And I behold and heard an angel flying through the midst of heaven saying with a loud voice Wo wo wo to the inhabiters of the earth by reason of the other voices of the trumpet of the three angels which are yet to sound CHAP. IX 1 At the sounding of the fifth angel a star falleth from heaven to whom is given the key of the bottomless pit 2 He openeth the pit and there come forth locusts like scorpions 12 The first wo past 13 The sixth trumpet soundeth 14 Four angels are let loose that were bound ANd the fifth angel sounded and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit 2 And he opened the bottomless pit and there arose a smoke out of the pit as the smoke of a great furnace and the sun and the air were darkned by reason of the smoke of the pit 3 And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth and unto them was given power as the sâ—orpions of the earth have power 4 And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth neither any green thing neither any tree but onely those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads 5 And to them it was given that they should not kill them but that they should be tormented five moneths and their torment was as the torment of a scorpion when he striketh a man 6 And in those days * Isa 2 1â— Chap. 6.16 shall men seek death and shall not finde it and shall desire to die and death shall flee from them 7 And the shapes of the locusts were like unto horses prepared unto battel and on their heads were as it were crowns like Gold and their faces were as the faces of men 8 And they had hair as the hair of women and their teeth were as the teeth of lions 9 And they had breastplates as it were breastplates of iron and the sound of their wings was as the sound of chariots of many horses running to battel 10 And they had tails like unto scorpions and there were stings in their tails and their power was to hurt men five moneths 11 And they had a king over them which is the angel of the bottomless pit whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon but in the Greek tongue hath his name ‖ That is to say a destroyer Apollyon 12 One wo is past and behold there come two woes more hereafter 13 And the sixth angel sounded and I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar which is before God 14 Saying to the sixth angel which had the trumpet Loose the four angels which are bound in the great river Euphrates 15 And the four angels were loosed which were prepared ‖ Or at for an hour and a day and a moneth and a year for to slay the third part of men 16 And the number of the army of the hors-men were two hundred thousand thousand and I heard the number of them 17 And thus I saw the horses in the vision and them that sat on them having breast-plates of fire and of jacinct and brimstone and the heads of the horses were as the heads of lions and out of their mouths issued fire and smoke and brimstone 18 By these three was the third part of men killed by the fire and by the smoke and by the brimstone which issued out of their mouths 19 For their power is in their mouth and in their tails for their tails were like unto serpents and had heads and with them they do hurt 20 And the rest of the men which were not killed by these plagues yet repented not of the works of their hands that they should not worship devils * Psal 115.4 and 135. â—5 and idols of gold and silver and brass and stone and of wood which neither can see nor hear nor walk 21 Neither repented they of their murders nor of their sorceries nor of their fornication nor of their thefts CHAP. X. A mighty strong angel appeareth with a book open in his hand 6 He sweareth by him that liveth for ever that there shall be no more time 9 John is commanded to take and eat the book ANd I saw another mighty angel come down from heaven clothed with a cloud and a rainbowe was upon his head and his face was as it were the sun and his feet as pillars of fire 2 And he had in his hand a little book open and he set his right foot upon the sea and his left foot on the earth 3 And cried with a loud voice as when a lion
roareth and when he had cried seven thunders uttered their voices 4 And when the seven thunders had uttered their voices I was about to write and I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me Seal up those things which the seven thunders uttered and write them not 5 And the angel which I saw stand upon the sea and upon the earth * Dan. 12.7 lifted up his hand to heaven 6 And sware by him that liveth for ever and ever who created heaven and the things that therein are and the earth and the things that therein are and the sea and the things which are therein that there should be time no longer 7 But in the days of the voice of the seventh angel when he shall begin to sound the mystery of God should be finished as he hath declared to his servants the prophets 8 And the voice which I heard from heaven spake unto me again and said Go and take the little book which is open in the hand of the angel which standeth upon the sea and upon the earth 9 And I went unto the angel and said unto him Give me the little book And he said unto me * Ezek. 2.8 and 3.3 Take it and eat it up and it shall make thy belly bitter but it shall be in thy mouth sweet as honey 10 And I took the little book out of the angels hand and ate it up and it was in my mouth sweet as honey and assâ—on as I had eaten it my belly was bitter 11 And he said unto me Thou must prophesie again before many peoples and nations and tongues and kings CHAP. XI 3 The two witnesses prophesie 6 They have power to shut heaven that it ram not 7 The beast shall fight against them and kill them 8 They lie unburied 11 and after three days and an half rise again 14 The second wo is past 15 The seventh trumpet soundeth ANd there was given me a reed like unto a rod and the angel stood saying Rise and measure the temple of God and the altar and them that worship therein 2 But the court which is without the temple †Gr. cast out leave out and measure it not for it is given unto the Gentiles and the holy city shall they tread under foot fourty and two moneths 3 And ‖ Or I will give unto my two witnesses that they may prophesie I will give power unto my two witnesses and they shall prophesie a thousand two hundred and threescore days clothed in sackcloth 4 These are the * Zech. 4.3.11.14 two olive trees and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth 5 And if any man will hurt them fire proceedeth out of their mouth and devoureth their enemies and if any man will hurt them he must in this manner be killed 6 These have power to shut heaven that it rain not in the days of their prophesie and have power over waters to turn them to bloud and to smite the earth with all plagues as often as they will 7 And when they shall have finished their testimony the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them and shall overcome them and kill them 8 And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt where also our Lord was crucified 9 And they of the people and kindreds and tongues and nations shall see their dead bodies three days and an hall and shall not suffer their dead bodies to be put in graves 10 And they that dwell upon the earn shall rejoyce over them and make merry and shall send gifts one to another because these two prophets tormented them that dwelt on the earth 11 And after three days and an half the Spirit of life from God entred into them and they stood upon their feet and great fear fell upon them which saw them 12 And they heard a great voice from heaven saying unto them Come up hither And they ascended up to heaven in a cloud and their enemies beheld them 13 And the same hour was there a great earthquake and the tenth part of the city fell and in the earthquake ware slain †Gr. names of men of men seven thousand and the remnant were affrighted and gave glory to the God of heaven 14 The second wo is past and behold the third wo cometh quickly 15 And the seventh angel sounded and there were great voices in heaven saying The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord and of his Christ and he shall reign for ever and ever 16 And the four and twenty elders which sat before God on their seats fell upon their faces and worshipped God 17 Saying We give thee thanks O Lord God Almighty which art and wast and art to come because thou hast taken to thee thy great power and hast reigned 18 And the nations were angry and thy wrath is come and the time of the dead that they should be judged and that thou shouldest give reward unto thy servants the prophets and to the saints and them that fear thy name small and great and shouldest destroy them which ‖ Or corrupt destroy the earth 19 And the temple of God was opened in heaven and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament and there were lightnings and voices and thundrings and an earthquake and great hail CHAP. XII 1 A woman clothed with the sun travaileth 4 The great red dragon standeth before her ready to devour her childe 6 when she was delivered she fleeth into the wilderness 7 Michael and his angels fight with the dragon and prevail 13 The dragon being cast down into the earth persecuteth the woman ANd there appeared a great ‖ Or signe wonder in heaven a woman clothed with the sun and the moon under her feet and upon her head a crown of twelve stars 2 And she being with childe cried travailing in birth and pained to be delivered 3 And there appeared another ‖ Or signe wonder in heaven and behold a great red dragon having seven heads and ten horns and seven crowns upon his heads 4 And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven and did cast them to the earth and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered for to devour her childe assoon as it was born 5 And she brought forth a man-childe who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron and her childe was caught up unto God and to his throne 6 And the woman fled into the wilderness where she hath a place prepared of God that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days 7 And there was war in heaven Michael and his angels fought against the dragon and the dragon fought and his angels 8 And prevailed not neither was there place found any more in heaven 9 And the great dragon was cast out that
old serpent called the devil and Satan which deceiveth the whole world he was cast out into the earth and his angels were cast out with him 10 And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven Now is come salvation and strength and the kingdom of our God and the power of his Christ for the accuser of our brethren is cast down which accused them before our God day and night 11 And they overcame him by the bloud of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony and they loved not their lives unto the death 12 Therefore rejoyce ye heavens and ye that dwell in them Wo to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea for the devil is come down unto you having great wrath because he knoweth that he hath but a short time 13 And when the dragon saw that he was cast unto the earth he persecuted the woman which brought forth the man childe 14 And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle that she might flie into the wilderness into her place where she is nourished for a time and times and half a time from the face of the serpent 15 And the serpent cast out of his mouth water as a flood after the woman that he might cause her to be carried away of the flood 16 And the earth helped the woman and the earth opened her mouth and swallowed up the flood which the dragon cast out of his mouth 17 And the dragon was wroth with the woman and went to make war with the remnant of her seed which keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus Christ CHAP. XIII 1 A beast riseth out of the sea with seven heads and ten borns to whom the dragon giveth his power 11 Another beast cometh up out of the earth 14 causeth an image to be made of the former beast 15 and that men should worship it 16 and receive his mark ANd I stood upon the sand of the sea and saw a beast rise up out of the sea having seven heads and ten horns and upon his horns ten crowns and upon his heads the ‖ Or names name of blasphemy 2 And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard and his feet were as the feet of a bear and his mouth as the mouth of a lion and the dragon gave him his power and his seat and great authority 3 And I saw one of his heads as it were †Gr slain wounded to death and his deadly wound was healed and all the world wondred after the beast 4 And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast and they worshipped the beast saying Who is like unto the beast who is able to make war with him 5 And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies and power was given unto him ‖ Or to make war to continue fourty and two moneths 6 And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God to blaspheme his name and his tabernacle and them that dwell in heaven 7 And it was given unto him to make war with the saints and to overcome them and power was given him over all kindreds and tongues and nations 8 And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world 9 If any man have an ear let him hear 10 He that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity * Matth. 16.52 He that killeth with the sword must be killed with the sword Here is the patience and the faith of the saints 11 And I behold another beast coming up out of the earth and he had two horns like a lamb and he spake as a dragon 12 And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast whose deadly wound was healed 13 And he doeth great wonders so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men 14 And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast saying to them that dwell on the earth that they should make an image to the beast which had the wound by a sword and did live 15 And he had power to give †Gr. treath life unto the image of the beast that the image of the beast should both speak and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed 16 And he causeth all both small and great rich and poor free and bond †Gr. to give to receive a mark in their right hand or in their foreheads 17 And that no man might buy or sell save he that had the mark or the name of the beast or the number of his name 18 Here is wisdom Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast for it is the number of a man and his number is six hundred threescore and six CHAP. XIV 1 The Lamb standing on mount Sion with his company 6 an angel preacheth the gospel 8 The fall of Babylon 15 The harvest of the world and putting in of the sickle 20 The vintage and winepress of the wrath of God ANd I looked and lo a Lamb stood on the mount Sion and with him an hundred fourty and four thousand having his Fathers name written in their foreheads 2 And I heard a voice from heaven as the voice of many waters and as the voice of a great thunder and I heard the voice of harpers harping with their harps 3 And they sung as it were a new song before the throne and before the four beasts and the elders and no man could learn that song but the hundred and fourty and four thousand which were redeemed from the earth 4 These are they which were not defiled with women for they are virgins these are they which follow the Lamb whithersoever he goeth these †Gr. were bought were redeemed from among men being the first-fruits unto God and to the Lamb. 5 And in their mouth was found no guile for they are without fault before the throne of God 6 And I saw another angel flie in the midst of heaven having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth and to every nation and kindred and tongue and people 7 Saying with a loud voice Fear God and give glory to him for the hour of his judgement is come * Psal 146.5.6 Act. 14.15 and worship him that made heaven and earth and the sea and the fountains of waters 8 And there followed another angel saying * Isa 21.9 Jer. 51.8 Chap. 18.2 Babylon is faln is faln that great city because she made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication 9 And the third angel followed them saying with a loud voice
If any man worship the beast and his image and receive his mark in his forehead or in his hand 10 The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb 11 And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever and they have no rest day nor night who worship the beast and his image and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name 12 Here is the patience of the saints here are they that keep the commandments of God and the saith of Jesus 13 And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me Write Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord ‖ Or from henceforth saith the Spirit Yea. from henceforth Yea saith the Spirit that they may rest from their labours and their works do follow them 14 And I looked and behold a white cloud and upon the cloud one sat like unto the Son of man having on his head a golden crown and in his hand a sharp sickle 15 And another angel came out of the temple crying with a load voice to him that sat on the cloud * Joel 3.13 Thrust in thy sickle and reap for the time is come for thee to reap for the harvest of the earth is ‖ Or dried ripe 16 And he that sat on the cloud thrust in his sickle on the earth and the earth was reaped 17 And another angel came out of the temple which is in heaven he also having a sharp sickle 18 And another angel came out from the altar which had power over fire and cried with a loud cry to him that had the sharp sickle saying Thrust in thy sharp sickle and gather the clusters of the vine of the earth for her grapes are fully ripe 19 And the angel thrust in his sickle into the earth and gathered the vine of the earth and cast it into the great wine-press of the wrath of God 20 And the wine-press was troden without the city and bloud came out of the wine-press even unto the horse-bridles by the space of a thousand and six hundred furlongs CHAP. XV. 1 The seven angels with the seven last plagues 3 The song of them that overcome the beast 7 The seven vials full of the wrath of God ANd I saw another signe in heaven great and marvellous seven angels having the seven last plagues for in them is filled up the wrath of God 2 And I saw as it were a sea of glass mingled with fire and them that had gotten the victory over the beast and over his image and over his mark and over the number of his name stand on the sea of glass having the harps of God 3 And they sing * Exod. 15.1 the song of Moses the servant of God and the song of the Lamb saying Great and marvellous are thy works Lord God Almighty * Psal 145.17 just and true are thy ways thou king of saints 4 * Jer. 10.7 Who shall not fear thee O Lord and glorifie thy name for thou onely art holy for all nations shall come and worship before thee for thy judgements are made manifest 5 And after that I looked and behold the temple of the tabernacle of the testimony in heaven was opened 6 And the seven angels came out of the temple having the seven plagues clothed in pure and white linen and having their breasts girded with golden girdles 7 And one of the four beasts gave unto the seven angels seven golden vials full of the wrath of God who liveth for ever and ever 8 And the temple was filled with smoke from the glory of God and from his power and no man was able to enter into the temple till the seven plagues of the seven angels were fulfilled CHAP. XVI 2 The angels pour out thrir vials full of wrath 6 The plagues that follow thereupon 15 Christ cometh as a thief Blessed are they that watch ANd I heard a great voice out of the temple saying to the seven angels Go your ways and pour out the vials of the wrath of God upon the earth 2 And the first went and poured out his vial upon the earth and there fell a noisom and grievous sore upon the men which had the mark of the beast and upon them which worshipped his image 3 And the second angel poured out his vial upon the sea and it became as the bloud of a dead man and every living soul died in the sea 4 And the third angel poured out his vial upon the rivers and fountains of waters and they became bloud 5 And I heard the angel of the waters say Thou art righteous O Lord which art and wast and shalt be because thou hast judged thus 6 For they have shed the bloud of saints and prophets and thou hast given them bloud to drink for they are worthy 7 And I heard another out of the altar say Even so Lord God Almighty true and righteous are thy judgements 8 And the fourth angel poured out his vial upon the sun and power was given unto him to scorch men with fire 9 And men were ‖ Or burned scorched with great heat and blasphemed the name of God which hath power over these plagues and they repented not to give him glory 10 And the fifth angel poured out his vial upon the seat of the beast and his kingdom was full of darkness and they gnawed their tongues for pain 11 And blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores and repented not of their deeds 12 And the sixth angel poured out his vial upon the great river Euphrates and the water thereof was dried up that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared 13 And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon and out of the mouth of the beast and out of the mouth of the false prophet 14 For they are the spirits of devils working miracles which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world to gather them to the battel of that great day of God Almighty 15 * Matth. 24.43 Chap. 3 3◠Behold I come as a thief Blessed is he that watcheth and keepeth his garments lest he walk naked and they see his shame 16 And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon 17 And the seventh angel poured out his vial into the air and there came a great voice out of the temple of heaven from the throne saying it is done 18 And there were voices and thunders and lightnings and there was a great earthquake such as was not since men were upon the earth so mighty an earthquake and so great 19 And the great city was divided into three parts and the cities of the nations fell and great
