shoemaker_n make_v every_o man_n shoe_n upon_o one_o last_o even_o so_o be_v it_o with_o this_o drink_n which_o have_v cause_v i_o great_o to_o wonder_n so_o see_v that_o it_o have_v be_v so_o do_v by_o almost_o all_o physician_n for_o how_o be_v it_o possible_a for_o a_o man_n to_o find_v any_o one_o thing_n which_o be_v minister_v after_o one_o kind_n of_o order_n shall_v cure_v all_o kind_n of_o disease_n consider_v how_o contrary_a one_o disease_n be_v to_o another_o but_o in_o that_o we_o have_v heretofore_o say_v of_o this_o wood_n that_o it_o may_v be_v use_v in_o cold_a and_o hot_a moist_a and_o dry_a complexion_n that_o be_v thus_o to_o be_v understand_v it_o may_v be_v so_o prepare_v in_o the_o séething_n that_o in_o hot_a disease_n it_o may_v be_v a_o cool_a medicine_n and_o the_o disease_n by_o reason_n of_o the_o moisture_n and_o coldness_n of_o the_o water_n shall_v be_v make_v temperate_a and_o by_o the_o wonderful_a virtue_n which_o secret_o lie_v hide_v in_o the_o you_o shall_v hear_v more_o at_o large_a hereafter_o now_o i_o will_v teach_v you_o how_o to_o seethe_v or_o prepare_v your_o drink_n after_o a_o better_o and_o more_o perfect_a order_n then_o of_o many_o have_v hitherto_o be_v use_v which_o be_v after_o this_o manner_n you_o shall_v take_v of_o the_o wood_n be_v make_v as_o small_a as_o be_v possible_a and_o put_v it_o into_o a_o stone_n pot_n which_o must_v be_v so_o big_a that_o it_o may_v not_o be_v more_o than_o half_a full_a when_o your_o wood_n with_o the_o other_o receipt_n appertinent_a to_o the_o disease_n be_v put_v into_o it_o your_o receipt_n therefore_o be_v put_v into_o the_o pot_n you_o shall_v set_v it_o upon_o the_o fire_n to_o seethe_v in_o a_o kettle_n with_o water_n and_o because_o it_o shall_v not_o in_o séething_n loose_v any_o of_o his_o virtue_n you_o shall_v therefore_o stop_v the_o pot_n mouth_n so_o close_o that_o no_o air_n do_v issue_n out_o for_o if_o it_o get_v vent_v that_o the_o air_n séething_fw-mi at_o the_o least_o ten_o hour_n but_o peradventure_o you_o will_v think_v that_o it_o can_v seethe_v because_o it_o be_v so_o close_o stop_v and_o have_v no_o vent_n but_o that_o be_v not_o material_a for_o our_o desire_n be_v that_o it_o shall_v boil_v or_o seethe_v without_o wallope_v for_o seethe_v in_o this_o manner_n it_o retain_v all_o his_o virtue_n whereby_o it_o shall_v perform_v his_o operation_n in_o better_a order_n than_o he_o have_v do_v heretofore_o be_v simple_o set_v upon_o the_o fire_n to_o seethe_v with_o a_o cover_n of_o wood_n or_o stone_n moreover_o it_o his_o dinner_n one_o slice_v of_o diacitron_n observe_v this_o he_o shall_v undoubted_o be_v cure_v for_o the_o phlegmatic_a and_o the_o melancholic_a how_o he_o be_v to_o be_v cure_v first_o you_o shall_v make_v he_o this_o drink_n to_o prepare_v the_o matter_n withal_o take_v sage_n isope_n margerome_n &_o mint_n of_o each_o a_o handful_n cardus_n benedictus_n sorrell_n and_o endive_n of_o each_o a_o handful_n and_o a_o half_a polipodij_fw-la three_o ounce_n rhabarbe_n half_a a_o ounce_n this_o you_o must_v seethe_v as_o aforesaid_a with_o a_o pint_n of_o wine_n and_o a_o pint_n of_o agarici_fw-la trociscati_fw-la rhabarbari_fw-la of_o each_o a_o dram_n and_o a_o half_a break_v and_o mingle_v they_o in_o two_o ounce_n of_o wine_n and_o two_o ounce_n of_o betonie_a water_n this_o you_o shall_v give_v he_o in_o the_o morning_n at_o four_o of_o the_o clock_n and_o at_o noon_n after_o his_o meat_n you_o shall_v give_v he_o a_o slice_n of_o diacitron_n and_o let_v he_o not_o once_o every_o day_n with_o the_o aforesaid_a purgation_n and_o he_o shall_v be_v cure_v of_o all_o disease_n of_o the_o stomach_n how_o ill_a soever_o they_o be_v capit._fw-la 11._o of_o disease_n of_o the_o liver_n as_o obstruction_n aposteme_a and_o the_o dropsy_n all_o the_o disease_n of_o the_o liver_n as_o stop_v hardness_n apostemation_n and_o the_o dropsy_n may_v all_o be_v cure_v with_o this_o excellent_a medicine_n if_o so_o be_v the_o disease_n be_v not_o join_v with_o a_o hot_a ague_n for_o than_o it_o shall_v not_o be_v profitable_a but_o very_o hurtful_a to_o use_v it_o and_o therefore_o in_o such_o a_o case_n you_o must_v use_v cool_a medicine_n until_o the_o ague_n be_v clean_o go_v and_o then_o you_o shall_v give_v he_o this_o drink_n take_v agrimonie_n liverwort_n cicorea_n endive_n acetosa_n or_o sorrell_n of_o each_o a_o handful_n lettuce_n one_o ounce_n melon_n seed_n gowrde_v seed_n of_o each_o half_n a_o ounce_n polipodij_fw-la two_o ounce_n agarici_fw-la trociscati_fw-la and_o rhabarbari_fw-la of_o each_o three_o dram_n this_o you_o shall_v seethe_v in_o a_o pint_n of_o water_n the_o space_n of_o six_o hour_n in_o the_o aforesaid_a order_n then_o take_v it_o out_o and_o strain_v it_o through_o a_o cloth_n put_v in_o so_o much_o sugar_n that_o it_o may_v be_v very_o sweet_a then_o put_v in_o a_o little_a good_a wine_n vinegar_n hereof_o you_o shall_v give_v the_o patient_n to_o drink_v every_o morning_n six_o ounce_n until_o it_o be_v drink_v out_o you_o shall_v not_o need_v to_o give_v the_o patient_a any_o other_o purgation_n for_o this_o shall_v give_v he_o every_o day_n two_o or_o three_o stool_n and_o more_o than_o that_o be_v not_o good_a for_o he_o by_o reason_n of_o the_o tenderness_n of_o the_o liver_n and_o upon_o his_o liver_n you_o shall_v lay_v a_o cloth_n make_v wet_a in_o agrimonie_n water_n and_o cicorey_n water_n take_v diligent_a heed_n in_o keep_v the_o say_a cloth_n alike_o warm_a and_o moist_a lest_o the_o cold_a do_v increase_v the_o disease_n for_o cold_a be_v very_o hurtful_a in_o apostemation_n and_o therefore_o you_o must_v keep_v the_o cloth_n always_o warm_a when_o he_o have_v thus_o continue_v fourteen_o day_n he_o shall_v then_o take_v the_o drink_n be_v make_v in_o this_o order_n take_v of_o the_o wood_n eight_o ounce_n of_o water_n ten_o pound_n cicorey_n endive_n agrimonie_n cuscuta_n of_o each_o a_o handful_n reupontice_n rhubarb_n of_o each_o a_o ounce_n this_o must_v be_v sodden_a as_o aforesaid_a close_o stop_v and_o give_v the_o patient_n thereof_o every_o morning_n and_o evening_n six_o ounce_n at_o a_o time_n continue_v the_o same_o until_o he_o be_v cure_v but_o if_o he_o chance_v to_o be_v so_o hard_o bind_v that_o he_o can_v go_v to_o the_o stool_n than_o you_o shall_v every_o nine_o day_n give_v he_o this_o purgation_n take_v electuarij_fw-la de_fw-mi succo_fw-it rosarum_fw-la half_o a_o ounce_n put_v thereto_o rhabarbari_fw-la electi_fw-la two_o dram_n make_v this_o in_o form_n of_o a_o potion_n with_o agrimonie_n water_n and_o give_v it_o he_o in_o the_o morning_n at_o four_o of_o the_o clock_n to_o drink_v use_v such_o order_n therein_o as_o i_o have_v prescribe_v in_o other_o purgation_n but_o if_o his_o drink_n do_v purge_v he_o than_o you_o shall_v not_o need_v any_o other_o purgation_n for_o it_o do_v purge_v sufficient_o in_o many_o melancholic_a patient_n first_o you_o shall_v lay_v upon_o the_o liver_n of_o the_o patient_n emplastrum_fw-la de_fw-fr melilote_n spread_v upon_o white_a leather_n which_o shall_v continue_v upon_o it_o the_o spare_v of_o eight_o day_n in_o the_o mean_v while_o he_o shall_v use_v this_o drink_n take_v maiden_n hair_n wormwood_n betonie_n agrimonie_n cypress_n fumiterre_fw-fr red_a colewort_n plaster_n in_o the_o place_n whereof_o you_o must_v lay_v a_o oxicrocium_n plaster_n which_o shall_v there_o continue_v until_o such_o time_n as_o you_o perceive_v the_o patient_n to_o be_v cure_v the_o drink_n be_v this_o take_v of_o the_o wood_n one_o pound_n of_o water_n five_o pound_n and_o of_o wine_n five_o pound_n put_v thereto_o of_o fumiterre_fw-fr agrimonie_n cypris_n of_o each_o one_o handful_n polipodij_fw-la senne_n leave_v of_o each_o three_o ounce_n rhabarbari_fw-la half_a a_o ounce_n all_o this_o put_v together_o must_v be_v sodden_a as_o aforesaid_a give_v the_o patient_n thereof_o to_o drink_v every_o morning_n and_o evening_n eight_o ounce_n at_o a_o time_n until_o he_o be_v cure_v the_o patient_n shall_v not_o need_v any_o other_o purgation_n for_o the_o drink_n shall_v purge_v he_o sufficient_o his_o diet_n shall_v be_v young_a hen_n flesh_n and_o such_o other_o thing_n as_o be_v light_a of_o digestion_n and_o do_v give_v much_o nourishment_n and_o he_o shall_v also_o not_o eat_v much_o but_o shall_v be_v so_o spare_v in_o his_o diet_n that_o he_o shall_v rise_v from_o his_o meal_n with_o great_a hunger_n which_o shall_v help_v great_o in_o the_o cure_n of_o this_o disease_n this_o foresay_a cure_n observe_v in_o all_o point_v as_o be_v here_o describe_v shall_v not_o fail_v you_o for_o i_o have_v have_v often_o experience_n thereof_o and_o have_v always_o have_v good_a success_n but_o one_o thing_n i_o must_v warn_v you_o of_o that_o be_v if_o there_o be_v great_a heat_n in_o the_o dropsy_n and_o that_o the_o disease_n do_v original_o spring_v of_o heat_n that_o then_o you_o take_v not_o in_o hand_n to_o cure_v it_o with_o this_o drink_n of_o lignum_fw-la guaiacum_n unless_o he_o be_v before_o sufficient_o cool_v because_o it_o will_v rather_o increase_v then_o diminish_v the_o disease_n observe_v the_o aforesaid_a order_n you_o can_v be_v deceive_v for_o it_o be_v perfect_a in_o all_o the_o aforenamed_a afore_o show_v in_o the_o chapter_n of_o anoint_v use_v he_o in_o all_o point_v as_o be_v there_o specify_v to_o wit_n in_o sweat_v in_o dry_v etc._n etc._n in_o this_o order_n you_o may_v fumigate_v or_o smoke_n without_o any_o danger_n if_o you_o take_v heed_n that_o the_o mercury_n do_v not_o ascend_v so_o that_o you_o shall_v not_o only_o avoid_v all_o peril_n in_o your_o cure_n but_o shall_v also_o purchase_v to_o yourselves_o praise_n and_o thanks_n whensoever_o you_o shall_v use_v it_o thus_o much_o of_o fumigation_n with_o the_o correction_n of_o the_o abuse_n therein_o use_v now_o concern_v wash_v capit._fw-la 4._o of_o wash_v with_o water_n there_o be_v yet_o another_o piece_n of_o cunning_n devise_v by_o the_o subtle_a pock-maister_n which_o perceive_v that_o they_o can_v not_o long_o use_v their_o mercury_n without_o hurt_n or_o shame_n and_o also_o without_o thank_n of_o the_o patient_n for_o the_o patient_n perceive_v the_o great_a peril_n that_o ensue_v by_o the_o anoint_v &_o how_o many_o be_v thereby_o spoil_v will_v not_o any_o long_o trust_v their_o anoint_v and_o so_o fare_v it_o also_o with_o their_o fumigation_n for_o when_o they_o see_v the_o number_n that_o thereby_o be_v kill_v they_o fear_v and_o will_v not_o any_o long_o be_v smoke_v whereupon_o the_o pock-maister_n be_v enforce_v to_o prepare_v their_o mercury_n after_o another_o order_n that_o he_o may_v be_v more_o secret_a and_o unknown_a that_o they_o may_v yet_o use_v he_o for_o they_o wist_v well_o that_o without_o he_o there_o be_v no_o cure_n to_o be_v wrought_v for_o as_o yet_o guaicum_fw-la be_v unknown_a therefore_o they_o take_v sublimate_v mercury_n and_o sod_a it_o in_o aqua_fw-la aquavitae_fw-la and_o with_o the_o say_a aqua_fw-la aquavitae_fw-la they_o wash_v the_o patient_n which_o be_v a_o very_a subtle_a and_o forcible_a manner_n of_o cure_v and_o very_o perilous_a which_o manner_n of_o cure_v i_o do_v counsel_v all_o man_n to_o leave_v undoone_v but_o in_o this_o manner_n follow_v you_o shall_v not_o only_o avoid_v all_o danger_n but_o shall_v also_o have_v good_a success_n in_o your_o work_n which_o if_o for_o the_o great_a labour_n and_o charge_n which_o be_v require_v in_o the_o prepare_n of_o your_o mercury_n you_o will_v not_o follow_v i_o will_v wish_v you_o to_o leave_v wash_v for_o of_o all_o manner_n of_o cure_v there_o be_v none_o the_o like_a for_o force_n and_o danger_n therefore_o if_o you_o will_v not_o otherwise_o correct_v your_o mercury_n it_o be_v not_o lawful_a for_o you_o to_o cure_v any_o man_n by_o wash_v for_o that_o they_o which_o be_v this_o way_n cure_v be_v in_o great_a danger_n than_o one_o man_n which_o do_v fight_v against_o two_o other_o for_o life_n and_o death_n but_o if_o you_o will_v prepare_v therefore_o above_o all_o thing_n you_o must_v take_v heed_n that_o you_o do_v not_o wash_v the_o whole_a part_n but_o only_o those_o that_o be_v disease_v for_o the_o disease_a part_n have_v matter_n mother_n and_o other_o open_a sore_n in_o the_o secret_a part_n both_o of_o man_n and_o woman_n which_o can_v with_o any_o other_o medicine_n be_v heal_v and_o all_o open_a sore_n wheresoever_o also_o all_o pain_n and_o grief_n in_o the_o arm_n and_o leg_n and_o all_o bush_n or_o bile_n in_o any_o place_n of_o the_o body_n may_v altogether_o be_v cure_v with_o the_o drink_n make_v of_o this_o excellent_a wood_n aforesaid_a after_o this_o manner_n first_o you_o shall_v purge_v the_o patient_n with_o pillulae_fw-la judae_fw-la give_v he_o in_o the_o evening_n three_o hour_n after_o his_o supper_n four_o scruple_n of_o the_o say_a pill_n in_o the_o night_n when_o he_o awake_v feel_v great_a pain_n and_o rumble_a in_o his_o belly_n he_o shall_v prepare_v himself_o to_o the_o stool_n and_o have_v begin_v to_o purge_v he_o shall_v not_o sleep_v until_o he_o have_v do_v purge_v and_o that_o he_o feel_v no_o more_o gripe_v or_o rumble_v in_o his_o belly_n and_o then_o he_o shall_v eat_v some_o good_a meat_n as_o mutton_n or_o veal_n which_o must_v be_v sodden_a as_o heretofore_o i_o have_v teach_v you_o than_o you_o shall_v give_v he_o this_o drink_n follow_v take_v of_o the_o wood_n one_o pound_n water_n twelve_o pound_n this_o must_v be_v sodden_a as_o aforesaid_a give_v the_o patient_n thereof_o twice_o every_o day_n eight_o ounce_n at_o a_o time_n cause_v he_o to_o sweat_v well_o for_o that_o do_v help_v very_o much_o in_o the_o cure_n of_o his_o disease_n and_o every_o nine_o day_n you_o shall_v purge_v he_o with_o the_o say_a pill_n but_o in_o the_o evening_n when_o you_o give_v he_o the_o pill_n you_o shall_v not_o suffer_v he_o to_o drink_v but_o at_o his_o supper_n this_o order_n he_o must_v observe_v forty_o day_n but_o if_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v as_o oftentimes_o it_o do_v that_o the_o patient_n be_v soon_o cure_v as_o sometime_o in_o twenty_o or_o five_o and_o twenty_o day_n yet_o i_o counsel_v you_o not_o to_o leave_v of_o the_o cure_n until_o the_o forty_o day_n be_v expire_v that_o you_o may_v be_v the_o more_o assure_v that_o it_o shall_v not_o return_v again_o for_o oftentimes_o it_o seem_v to_o be_v cure_v when_o the_o root_n remain_v still_o within_o which_o in_o the_o end_n break_v out_o again_o and_o so_o be_v worse_a than_o at_o the_o first_o and_o therefore_o i_o counsel_v you_o to_o continue_v the_o same_o forty_o day_n that_o the_o root_n be_v take_v away_o you_o need_v not_o fear_v the_o return_n of_o the_o disease_n for_o the_o phlegmatic_a and_o the_o mellancholicke_a you_o shall_v purge_v the_o patient_n with_o pillulae_fw-la cochiae_fw-la and_o pillulę_n aggregatiuę_n of_o each_o two_o scruple_n this_o must_v be_v give_v he_o in_o the_o evening_n use_v he_o in_o all_o respect_n as_o be_v say_v of_o the_o other_o than_o you_o shall_v give_v he_o this_o drink_n take_v of_o the_o wood_n a_o pound_n and_o a_o
