faculty_n and_o employment_n there_o be_v so_o many_o vain_a transaction_n practise_v without_o the_o rule_n of_o equity_n we_o shall_v leave_v they_o till_o their_o proper_a time_n nor_o will_v we_o at_o all_o heed_n the_o foolish_a prating_n of_o such_o as_o talk_v more_o thing_n concern_v god_n than_o he_o have_v make_v know_v unto_o they_o and_o will_v say_v understand_v he_o just_a as_o if_o upon_o who_o faith_n entire_o depend_v and_o that_o be_v it_o not_o for_o they_o the_o heaven_n and_o the_o earth_n will_v perish_v o_o the_o sury_n and_o madness_n of_o man_n and_o their_o most_o great_a cheat_v and_o deceive_v who_o it_o will_v
its_o operation_n more_o potent_o in_o any_o kind_n of_o body_n then_o in_o its_o own_o proper_a body_n in_o which_o it_o both_o be_v and_o live_v likewise_o in_o every_o body_n there_o be_v nothing_o attract_v through_o the_o whole_a skin_n from_o the_o four_o external_a element_n what_o be_v necessary_a for_o it_o which_o if_o it_o shall_v not_o do_v the_o internal_a nutriment_n will_v not_o suffice_v for_o a_o man_n support_n and_o because_o that_o moisture_n be_v so_o very_a existent_n in_o the_o body_n by_o custom_n the_o same_o body_n extract_v it_o out_o of_o the_o element_n water_n and_o so_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o as_o long_o as_o one_o shall_v sit_v or_o stand_v therein_o he_o need_v not_o any_o other_o quench_v of_o his_o thirst_n now_o this_o proceed_v not_o from_o the_o water_n extinguish_v the_o heat_n as_o it_o quench_v fire_n but_o the_o internal_a heat_n attract_v the_o external_a moisture_n to_o itself_o &_o drink_v it_o just_a as_o if_o it_o be_v take_v inward_o hence_o it_o be_v that_o the_o cow_n be_v able_a to_o abide_v in_o the_o alps_o without_o drink_v a_o whole_a summer_n for_o the_o air_n be_v as_o a_o drink_n to_o they_o and_o supply_v the_o medicine_n viz._n by_o the_o quintessence_n of_o gold_n and_o scarce_o take_v half_a a_o scruple_n thereof_o each_o day_n hence_o likewise_o or_o after_o this_o manner_n have_v there_o be_v many_o other_o that_o have_v eat_v nothing_o for_o many_o year_n viz._n xx_o year_n such_o i_o remember_v i_o have_v see_v in_o my_o time_n some_o do_v attribute_v this_o kind_n of_o live_v to_o the_o goodness_n and_o piety_n of_o the_o person_n and_o some_o also_o impute_v it_o to_o god_n the_o which_o we_o do_v not_o in_o the_o least_o desire_n to_o gainsay_v or_o judge_v of_o yet_o however_o this_o thing_n be_v even_o natural_a for_o sadness_n melancholy_a and_o faint_a or_o grief_n of_o the_o mind_n do_v take_v away_o both_o hunger_n and_o thirst_n so_o that_o by_o the_o attraction_n of_o the_o body_n to_o wit_n self_n it_o be_v able_a to_o sustain_v it_o for_o many_o year_n for_o as_o much_o as_o food_n and_o drink_n be_v not_o so_o ordain_v or_o appoint_v as_o that_o we_o must_v of_o necessity_n eat_v flesh_n or_o bread_n and_o drink_v wine_n or_o water_n but_o also_o we_o may_v sustain_v our_o life_n with_o the_o air_n and_o with_o clod_n of_o earth_n and_o we_o be_v to_o believe_v that_o whatsoever_o be_v ordain_v for_o food_n be_v make_v that_o we_o may_v try_v and_o taste_v it_o the_o which_o we_o shall_v declare_v more_o at_o large_a in_o our_o book_n of_o the_o monarchy_n of_o god_n albeit_o we_o grant_v thus_o much_o that_o because_o of_o our_o labour_n and_o such_o like_a we_o can_v want_v temporal_a and_o corporal_a food_n and_o that_o for_o very_a many_o cause_n and_o therefore_o food_n be_v ordain_v for_o this_o body_n as_o medicine_n be_v against_o disease_n now_o therefore_o as_o to_o the_o distinction_n of_o thing_n which_o enter_v into_o the_o body_n observe_v it_o thus_o that_o they_o be_v distribute_v throughout_o all_o the_o part_n of_o the_o body_n no_o otherwise_o then_o as_o if_o vinum_fw-la arden_n or_o burn_a spirit_n be_v pour_v into_o water_n thereby_o make_v it_o all_o of_o the_o same_o odour_n because_o it_o be_v defuse_a throughout_o the_o whole_a body_n thereof_o in_o like_a manner_n if_o ink_n be_v put_v into_o wine_n all_o of_o it_o will_v be_v render_v black_a thereby_o even_o thus_o be_v it_o in_o the_o body_n of_o man_n the_o humidity_n and_o moisture_n of_o life_n do_v present_o defuse_v such_o thing_n as_o be_v receive_v in_o and_o that_o soon_o and_o speedy_a then_o what_o we_o have_v propose_v unto_o you_o by_o these_o example_n but_o as_o to_o the_o form_n that_o the_o substance_n thus_o take_v in_o be_v transmute_v into_o the_o nature_n of_o this_o consist_v only_o in_o the_o member_n which_o receive_v it_o and_o digest_v it_o into_o their_o own_o likeness_n no_o otherwise_o then_o as_o when_o bread_n if_o convey_v into_o a_o man_n be_v make_v mans-flesh_n and_o if_o into_o a_o fish_n it_o be_v make_v fish_n etc._n etc._n thus_o in_o like_a manner_n be_v it_o to_o be_v understand_v of_o they_o the_o same_o be_v likewise_o to_o be_v understand_v of_o medicine_n viz._n that_o they_o be_v transmute_v into_o the_o member_n according_a to_o the_o propriety_n of_o they_o member_n for_o they_o receive_v their_o strength_n and_o virtue_n from_o the_o proper_a substance_n of_o the_o medicine_n according_a to_o either_o the_o good_a or_o evil_n the_o subtle_a or_o gross_a disperse_v thereof_o according_a as_o the_o quality_n of_o the_o medicine_n shall_v be_v as_o for_o example_n if_o it_o be_v of_o a_o quintessence_n the_o transmutation_n of_o it_o will_v be_v more_o strong_a and_o potent_a but_o if_o it_o be_v a_o gross_a medicine_n such_o also_o it_o remain_v even_o as_o a_o image_n or_o picture_n that_o have_v its_o ornament_n from_o the_o colour_n as_o to_o fairness_n and_o deformity_n the_o which_o colour_n if_o noble_a such_o also_o will_v the_o picture_n be_v so_o therefore_o that_o we_o may_v collect_v our_o experience_n in_o those_o like_a thing_n
which_o we_o have_v meet_v withal_o and_o may_v as_o it_o be_v heap_v they_o up_o together_o for_o our_o pozy_n and_o better_a remembrance_n that_o so_o we_o may_v have_v they_o in_o a_o readiness_n when_o we_o need_v they_o we_o will_v write_v down_o these_o nine_o book_n but_o as_o for_o the_o ten_o i_o will_v reserve_v that_o close_a in_o my_o brain_n because_o of_o the_o ungrateful_a idiot_n but_o yet_o notwithstanding_o in_o these_o 9_o be_v enough_o declare_v to_o our_o son_n and_o let_v no_o body_n admire_v and_o so_o much_o wonder_n at_o the_o teach_n of_o my_o doctrine_n for_o thing_n be_v not_o so_o very_a consonant_n with_o the_o separation_n of_o the_o element_n for_o the_o better_a and_o clear_a understanding_n of_o that_o same_o separation_n for_o every_o thing_n be_v themselves_o you_o be_v to_o understand_v it_o thus_o whereas_o the_o mixion_n of_o the_o element_n be_v in_o and_o by_o predestination_n so_o unite_v and_o corroborate_v the_o case_n stand_v thus_o there_o be_v no_o weight_n to_o be_v account_v in_o they_o but_o the_o roll_a power_n of_o one_o of_o they_o be_v great_a in_o thing_n then_o another_o power_n be_v by_o which_o be_v to_o be_v understand_v that_o in_o the_o digest_v or_o disposition_n and_o ferment_n of_o the_o predestination_n the_o strong_a element_n will_v bear_v rule_n and_o overcome_v and_o subject_v the_o other_o by_o which_o mean_v the_o other_o three_o element_n can_v in_o the_o least_o attain_v their_o perfection_n but_o be_v in_o relation_n to_o that_o perfect_a element_n as_o the_o light_n or_o sappy_a matter_n in_o wood_n be_v to_o the_o firm_a timber_n therefore_o also_o they_o be_v not_o to_o be_v call_v element_n for_o as_o much_o as_o they_o be_v not_o all_o of_o they_o perfect_a but_o one_o only_o be_v so_o when_o we_o speak_v therefore_o of_o the_o four_o element_n which_o final_o be_v in_o all_o thing_n we_o be_v not_o to_o understand_v it_o so_o precise_o that_o in_o they_o the_o four_o element_n be_v perfect_a but_o there_o be_v but_o one_o only_o finish_v or_o accomplish_a element_n in_o thing_n the_o other_o element_n remain_v imperfect_a by_o reason_n of_o the_o virtue_n and_o puissance_n of_o the_o chief_a excel_a element_n hence_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o they_o can_v thus_o accord_v and_o consist_v together_o because_o that_o there_o be_v no_o perfection_n in_o three_o of_o they_o upon_o which_o account_n also_o neither_o can_v there_o be_v any_o corruption_n by_o the_o contrariety_n to_o bear_v rule_n moreover_o that_o a_o element_n be_v predominant_a in_o one_o kind_n it_o be_v because_o it_o be_v hereunto_o predestinate_v and_o therefore_o no_o corruption_n nor_o permixion_n can_v adhere_v to_o they_o as_o we_o mention_v it_o in_o the_o book_n of_o generation_n whereas_o therefore_o there_o be_v only_o one_o element_n in_o every_o thing_n particular_o it_o be_v needless_a to_o seek_v for_o four_o element_n in_o thing_n there_o be_v three_o of_o they_o not_o posit_v in_o perfection_n brief_o and_o final_o therefore_o we_o must_v understand_v that_o the_o four_o element_n be_v in_o all_o thing_n but_o not_o four_o complexion_n actual_o the_o case_n stand_v thus_o a_o substance_n or_o matter_n contain_v the_o element_n water_n and_o then_o it_o be_v nenusar_n or_o water_n lily_n there_o be_v not_o in_o it_o beside_o this_o element_n neither_o earth_n nor_o air_n nor_o fire_n likewise_o there_o be_v not_o in_o it_o any_o likeness_n of_o heat_n or_o dryness_n for_o it_o have_v no_o peculiar_a operation_n but_o the_o predestination_n thereof_o be_v water_n and_o be_v the_o only_a element_n of_o water_n under_o which_o be_v neither_o dryness_n nor_o heat_n according_a to_o its_o affiance_a nature_n but_o yet_o although_o all_o these_o thing_n be_v thus_o yet_o notwithstanding_o the_o other_o three_o element_n be_v in_o it_o but_o the_o creature_n have_v not_o their_o rise_n out_o of_o those_o three_o element_n which_o be_v not_o bring_v forth_o as_o it_o be_v perfect_a nor_o have_v they_o their_o beginning_n or_o help_n and_o assistance_n from_o they_o but_o out_o of_o the_o predestinate_v element_n which_o be_v unite_v to_o and_o impress_v in_o that_o stock_n and_o kind_n and_o albeit_o that_o this_o square_n not_o with_o the_o common_a philosophy_n viz._n that_o the_o one_o predestinate_v element_n have_v of_o its_o own_o nature_n the_o other_o three_o element_n adhere_v unto_o itself_o yet_o notwithstanding_o it_o be_v to_o be_v believe_v that_o the_o element_n and_o substance_n or_o matter_n be_v different_a from_o each_o other_o the_o which_o be_v to_o be_v thus_o understand_v the_o substance_n or_o matter_n be_v not_o from_o that_o element_n which_o tinge_v and_o elementate_v the_o substance_n neither_o also_o be_v these_o element_n from_o the_o substance_n but_o they_o have_v a_o equal_a like_o agreement_n as_o the_o body_n and_o soul_n have_v but_o now_o each_o body_n as_o for_o example_n the_o body_n of_o some_o grow_a thing_n have_v its_o complexion_n and_o likewise_o its_o element_n although_o the_o element_n itself_o be_v not_o visible_a in_o the_o grow_a body_n nor_o be_v it_o tangible_a or_o demonstrable_a and_o that_o for_o this_o reason_n because_o this_o element_n be_v by_o reason_n of_o its_o subtlety_n more_o strong_a and_o subject_n the_o other_o element_n of_o the_o grow_a body_n and_o yet_o all_o of_o they_o be_v in_o the_o body_n but_o imperceptible_o like_v as_o when_o water_n be_v permix_v with_o vinegar_n it_o become_v like_a unto_o it_o and_o although_o the_o vinegar_n shall_v have_v change_v all_o in_o the_o essence_n thereof_o yet_o nevertheless_o the_o complexion_n of_o the_o water_n remain_v incorrupt_a nor_o be_v it_o vinegar_n for_o that_o cause_n but_o be_v as_o much_o water_n as_o afore_o and_o although_o it_o put_v not_o forth_o the_o virtue_n of_o water_n as_o afore_o yet_o it_o element_n agree_v unto_o and_o this_o we_o will_v declare_v in_o the_o book_n of_o the_o quintessence_n the_o other_o be_v that_o which_o the_o four_o substantial_a element_n that_o exist_v in_o grow_a thing_n appertain_v unto_o by_o this_o we_o be_v to_o understand_v that_o the_o predestinate_v element_n be_v the_o quintessence_n nor_o be_v it_o possible_a to_o make_v a_o separation_n of_o the_o one_o from_o the_o other_o only_o it_o may_v be_v make_v from_o the_o other_o three_o element_n as_o follow_v hereunder_o concern_v the_o quintessence_n but_o where_o we_o speak_v of_o the_o separation_n of_o the_o four_o element_n we_o mean_v those_o four_o which_o be_v essential_o in_o a_o body_n from_o hence_o have_v rise_v so_o many_o various_a error_n because_o that_o man_n have_v seek_v after_o the_o four_o element_n and_o also_o the_o quintessence_n in_o the_o predestinate_v element_n the_o which_o can_v possible_o be_v moreover_o you_o must_v also_o know_v that_o when_o the_o element_n of_o body_n be_v not_o to_o be_v separate_v so_o that_o one_o may_v be_v fire_n another_o water_n and_o another_o like_a to_o air_n and_o the_o four_o to_o earth_n according_a to_o their_o complexion_n that_o sometime_o the_o element_n appear_v with_o their_o form_n sometime_o with_o their_o complexion_n as_o the_o water_n like_o water_n the_o air_n like_o air_n the_o earth_n like_o earth_n and_o the_o fire_n like_o fire_n these_o be_v to_o
some_o fit_a vessel_n the_o which_o set_v in_o a_o horse-bel_o for_o four_o week_n then_o distil_v it_o by_o b_o put_v they_o again_o into_o horse-dung_n for_o eight_o day_n and_o let_v they_o be_v again_o distil_v by_o b._n m._n so_o the_o quintessence_n will_v ascend_v by_o the_o alembick_a but_o the_o body_n will_v abide_v in_o the_o bottom_n if_o there_o shall_v aught_o of_o the_o quintessence_n have_v remain_v in_o the_o bottom_n it_o must_v be_v further_o putrify_v and_o he_o proceed_v with_o as_o before_o then_o take_v this_o distil_v water_n and_o put_v it_o again_o to_o this_o grow_v body_n and_o so_o let_v they_o be_v digest_v together_o in_o a_o pelican_n for_o six_o day_n then_o the_o colour_n will_v be_v thick_a the_o which_o abstract_a by_o b._n m._n and_o the_o body_n will_v go_v away_o and_o be_v sever_v the_o quintessence_n remain_v in_o the_o bottom_n separate_a this_o by_o a_o retortive_a process_n or_o press_v from_o the_o fece_n and_o then_o digest_v this_o quintessence_n four_o day_n by_o this_o mean_n thou_o shall_v have_v it_o perfect_a in_o odour_n juyciness_n taste_n and_o virtue_n and_o of_o the_o consistency_n of_o a_o thick_a substance_n of_o the_o extraction_n of_o the_o quintessence_n out_o of_o spice_n we_o will_v now_o teach_v the_o manner_n of_o extract_v the_o quintessence_n out_o of_o spice_n as_o musk_n civet_n camphire_n and_o such_o like_a first_o of_o all_o the_o quintessence_n must_v be_v reduce_v into_o another_o form_n and_o then_o at_o length_n be_v separate_v therefrom_o and_o in_o that_o same_o separation_n
