whereof_o every_o one_o of_o they_o perform_v such_o action_n as_o be_v peculiar_a to_o it_o namely_o various_a way_n of_o motion_n and_o kind_n of_o sensible_a quality_n and_o that_o the_o same_o thing_n be_v their_o form_n the_o same_o which_o philosopher_n express_v by_o the_o name_n of_o nature_n now_o whenas_o upon_o this_o contemplation_n §_o 36_o he_o be_v well_o assure_v that_o the_o true_a essence_n of_o that_o animal-spirit_n which_o his_o mind_n have_v be_v so_o intent_n upon_o be_v compound_v of_o the_o notion_n of_o corporeity_n and_o some_o other_o notion_n thereto_o superad_v and_o that_o this_o notion_n of_o corporeity_n be_v common_a to_o he_o with_o other_o body_n but_o that_o the_o other_o which_o be_v adjoin_v thereto_o be_v peculiar_a to_o himself_o the_o notion_n of_o corporeity_n appear_v vile_a to_o he_o and_o of_o no_o account_n so_o that_o he_o utter_o cast_v it_o off_o and_o his_o mind_n whole_o fix_v itself_o upon_o that_o second_o notion_n which_o be_v call_v by_o the_o name_n of_o the_o soul_n the_o true_a nature_n and_o state_n whereof_o he_o earnest_o desire_v to_o understand_v upon_o that_o therefore_o he_o fix_v his_o thought_n and_o begin_v his_o contemplation_n with_o consider_v all_o body_n not_o as_o body_n but_o as_o have_v form_n whence_o necessary_o flow_v certain_a property_n whereby_o they_o be_v distinguish_v from_o one_o another_o and_o upon_o his_o instant_a prosecute_n §_o 37_o this_o notion_n have_v at_o last_o full_o comprehend_v it_o in_o his_o mind_n he_o see_v that_o the_o whole_a multitude_n of_o distinguish_v from_o they_o by_o a_o three_o which_o be_v superad_v unto_o the_o two_o former_a and_o from_o whence_o also_o certain_a action_n issue_v as_o for_o example_n all_o terrestrial_a body_n as_o earth_n stones_n mineral_n plant_n animal_n and_o whatsoever_o other_o heavy_a body_n do_v make_v up_o one_o number_n which_o agree_v in_o the_o same_o form_n namely_o that_o whence_o descensive_a motion_n proceed_v whilst_o there_o be_v nothing_o to_o hinder_v their_o descent_n so_o that_o whensoever_o they_o be_v force_v to_o move_v upward_o at_o any_o time_n and_o after_o leave_v unto_o themselves_o they_o move_v downward_o of_o their_o own_o accord_n by_o virtue_n of_o that_o their_o form_n again_o some_o part_n of_o the_o same_o number_n of_o heavy_a body_n viz._n plant_n and_o animal_n though_o they_o agree_v with_o the_o former_a in_o the_o same_o form_n which_o be_v common_a to_o they_o all_o yet_o they_o have_v another_o form_n beside_o from_o which_o proceed_v nutrition_n and_o augmentation_n now_o nutrition_n be_v perform_v when_o the_o body_n nourish_v do_v substitute_n into_o the_o place_n of_o that_o which_o be_v consume_v somewhat_o of_o the_o like_a kind_n which_o it_o draw_v to_o itself_o and_o then_o convert_v into_o its_o own_o substance_n but_o augmentation_n be_v a_o motion_n tend_v to_o the_o threefold_a dimension_n of_o length_n breadth_n and_o thickness_n according_a to_o the_o just_a proportion_n of_o the_o body_n augment_v these_o two_o action_n therefore_o be_v common_a to_o plant_n and_o animal_n doubtless_o arise_v from_o a_o form_n which_o be_v common_a to_o both_o to_o wit_n that_o which_o be_v call_v the_o vegetative_a soul_n but_o some_o also_o of_o this_o sort_n of_o body_n and_o particular_o animal_n although_o they_o have_v the_o first_o and_o second_o form_n common_a to_o they_o with_o the_o former_a yet_o they_o have_v a_o three_o also_o superad_v whence_o proceed_v sensation_n and_o local_a motion_n he_o see_v likewise_o that_o every_o peculiar_a kind_n of_o animal_n have_v some_o certain_a property_n whereby_o it_o be_v diversify_v and_o distinguish_v from_o all_o the_o rest_n he_o know_v also_o that_o every_o such_o diversity_n proceed_v from_o that_o form_n which_o be_v proper_a to_o it_o that_o namely_o which_o be_v superad_v to_o the_o former_a and_o which_o be_v common_a to_o it_o with_o other_o animal_n and_o the_o like_a he_o see_v happen_v to_o the_o several_a kind_n of_o plant_n it_o be_v also_o evident_a to_o he_o that_o §_o 38_o among_o the_o sensible_a body_n the_o which_o be_v find_v in_o this_o low_a world_n liable_a to_o generation_n and_o corruption_n the_o essence_n of_o some_o of_o they_o be_v compound_v of_o more_o notion_n superad_v to_o the_o notion_n of_o corporeity_n and_o other_o of_o few_o he_o know_v likewise_o that_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o few_o must_v needs_o be_v more_o easy_a to_o he_o than_o the_o knowledge_n of_o such_o as_o be_v more_o in_o number_n he_o therefore_o seek_v in_o the_o first_o place_n how_o he_o may_v attain_v the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o true_a nature_n of_o the_o form_n of_o some_o one_o body_n who_o essence_n be_v make_v up_o of_o few_o notion_n whereupon_o as_o he_o consider_v the_o animal_n and_o plant_n he_o sound_v that_o their_o essence_n consist_v of_o many_o notion_n by_o reason_n of_o the_o various_a kind_n of_o action_n which_o he_o observe_v in_o they_o wherefore_o he_o lay_v aside_o the_o enquiry_n into_o their_o form_n so_o also_o as_o to_o the_o part_n of_o earth_n he_o see_v that_o some_o of_o they_o be_v more_o simple_a than_o other_o he_o propose_v therefore_o to_o himself_o the_o contemplation_n of_o such_o body_n as_o he_o can_v possible_o find_v to_o be_v the_o most_o simple_a of_o all_o so_o he_o observe_v that_o the_o water_n be_v a_o body_n very_o little_o compound_v as_o he_o judge_v by_o the_o fewness_n of_o those_o action_n which_o proceed_v from_o its_o form_n the_o same_o he_o also_o observe_v in_o the_o fire_n and_o air._n withal_o he_o have_v before_o observe_v §_o 39_o that_o some_o of_o these_o four_o element_n be_v convert_v into_o the_o other_o and_o therefore_o that_o there_o must_v be_v some_o one_o thing_n which_o they_o joint_o participate_v of_o and_o that_o this_o thing_n be_v the_o notion_n of_o corporeity_n he_o conclude_v also_o that_o this_o one_o thing_n whereof_o they_o all_o participate_v must_v needs_o be_v void_a of_o all_o those_o notion_n whereby_o the_o four_o element_n be_v distinguish_v from_o each_o other_o namely_o that_o it_o can_v not_o move_v either_o upward_a or_o downward_o that_o it_o be_v neither_o hot_a nor_o cold_a neither_o moist_a nor_o dry_a see_v that_o none_o of_o these_o quality_n be_v common_a to_o all_o body_n and_o consequent_o do_v not_o belong_v to_o the_o body_n as_o it_o be_v a_o body_n so_o that_o if_o it_o be_v possible_a to_o find_v a_o body_n wherein_o there_o be_v no_o other_o form_n superad_v to_o its_o corporeity_n none_o of_o these_o quality_n will_v be_v find_v in_o it_o yea_o that_o it_o be_v impossible_a any_o quality_n whatsoever_o shall_v be_v find_v in_o it_o but_o what_o agree_v to_o all_o body_n whatsoever_o diversity_n of_o form_n they_o have_v he_o consider_v therefore_o with_o himself_o whether_o he_o can_v find_v out_o any_o one_o adjunct_n which_o be_v common_a to_o all_o body_n as_o well_o animate_v as_o inanimate_a but_o he_o can_v find_v none_o which_o agree_v to_o all_o of_o they_o beside_o the_o notion_n of_o extension_n towards_o those_o three_o dimension_n which_o be_v find_v in_o all_o of_o they_o viz._n length_n breadth_n and_o thickness_n whence_o he_o gather_v that_o this_o notion_n belong_v to_o the_o body_n as_o it_o be_v a_o body_n however_o his_o sense_n can_v not_o represent_v to_o he_o any_o body_n existent_a in_o nature_n which_o have_v this_o only_a adjunct_n and_o be_v void_a of_o all_o other_o form_n for_o he_o see_v that_o every_o one_o of_o they_o have_v some_o other_o notion_n superad_v to_o the_o say_v extension_n after_o this_o he_o consider_v with_o himself_o §_o 40_o whether_o this_o threefold_a extension_n be_v the_o sole_a notion_n belong_v to_o a_o bodily_a substance_n or_o whether_o there_o be_v not_o some_o other_o notion_n beside_o contain_v in_o so_o when_o it_o make_v use_v of_o any_o limb_n to_o work_v aught_o by_o the_o effect_n be_v motion_n when_o it_o make_v use_v of_o the_o liver_n the_o effect_n be_v nutrition_n when_o of_o the_o stomach_n it_o be_v the_o receive_n and_o concoct_v of_o the_o aliment_n and_o every_o one_o of_o these_o action_n have_v its_o proper_a part_n subservient_fw-fr to_o it_o none_o of_o which_o can_v discharge_v its_o office_n but_o by_o the_o virtue_n of_o that_o influence_n which_o be_v thereunto_o derive_v from_o the_o forementioned_a spirit_n resident_a in_o the_o heart_n through_o those_o passage_n which_o be_v call_v the_o artery_n insomuch_o that_o whensoever_o they_o chance_v to_o be_v break_v off_o or_o cut_v asunder_o or_o else_o obstruct_v the_o action_n of_o that_o part_n of_o the_o body_n present_o cease_v he_o find_v also_o that_o all_o these_o artery_n derive_v that_o spirit_n from_o the_o ventricles_n of_o the_o brain_n and_o that_o the_o brain_n receive_v it_o from_o the_o heart_n as_o also_o that_o there_o be_v a_o great_a quantity_n thereof_o in_o the_o brain_n because_o that_o be_v the_o place_n wherein_o he_o find_v several_a vessel_n in_o which_o it_o lay_v and_o whereby_o it_o be_v thence_o distribute_v into_o all_o part_n of_o the_o body_n he_o also_o perceive_v that_o if_o any_o part_n of_o the_o body_n come_v by_o any_o mean_n whatsoever_o to_o be_v deprive_v of_o the_o influx_n of_o this_o spirit_n the_o action_n thereof_o immediate_o cease_v so_o that_o it_o become_v like_a to_o a_o contemptible_a tool_n or_o instrument_n cast_v aside_o as_o of_o no_o use_n at_o all_o also_o that_o if_o this_o spirit_n forsake_v the_o body_n altogether_o or_o by_o any_o mean_n come_v to_o be_v waste_v or_o dissolve_v the_o whole_a body_n at_o the_o same_o time_n become_v deprive_v of_o motion_n and_o be_v reduce_v to_o the_o state_n of_o death_n these_o observation_n of_o he_o and_o meditation_n §_o 23_o thereupon_o have_v bring_v he_o to_o that_o degree_n of_o knowledge_n which_o i_o forementioned_a at_o what_o time_n he_o have_v attain_v to_o the_o end_n of_o his_o three_o septenary_n viz._n to_o the_o twenty_o first_o year_n of_o his_o age._n within_o the_o fpace_n of_o which_o time_n he_o find_v out_o many_o thing_n of_o very_a great_a use_n to_o he_o for_o the_o conveniency_n of_o life_n for_o he_o clothe_v himself_o with_o the_o skin_n of_o wild_a beast_n when_o he_o have_v cut_v they_o out_o for_o his_o use_n he_o also_o shod_a his_o foot_n with_o they_o have_v make_v he_o thread_n of_o their_o hair_n as_o also_o of_o the_o rind_n of_o the_o stalk_n of_o althaea_n mallow_n hemp_n and_o the_o like_a plant_n which_o be_v easy_a to_o be_v part_v asunder_o and_o draw_v into_o thread_n and_o this_o he_o have_v learned_a to_o do_v out_o of_o his_o former_a experience_n in_o make_v use_n of_o the_o rush_n he_o make_v himself_o also_o a_o kind_n of_o 〈◊〉_d or_o bodkin_n of_o the_o strong_a thorn_n he_o can_v get_v and_o of_o of_o the_o swift_a sort_n of_o the_o wild_a beast_n and_o so_o long_o to_o breed_v it_o up_o nourish_v it_o with_o food_n agreeable_a to_o its_o nature_n until_o at_o length_n he_o may_v get_v upon_o the_o back_n of_o it_o and_o therewith_o pursue_v other_o kind_n of_o wild_a beast_n now_o there_o be_v in_o that_o island_n wild_a horse_n and_o wild_a ass_n out_o of_o which_o number_n have_v make_v choice_n of_o some_o which_o seem_v fit_a for_o his_o purpose_n he_o make_v they_o by_o degree_n so_o gentle_a and_o tractable_a that_o at_o length_n by_o their_o help_n and_o service_n he_o become_v master_n of_o his_o wish_n and_o when_o he_o have_v make_v for_o they_o out_o of_o thong_n and_o skin_n somewhat_o that_o competent_o serve_v he_o instead_o of_o bridle_n and_o saddle_n it_o be_v no_o hard_a matter_n for_o he_o to_o compass_v his_o end_n in_o catch_v those_o wild_a beast_n which_o he_o very_o hardly_o if_o at_o all_o can_v have_v take_v any_o other_o way_n all_o these_o art_n and_o device_n he_o find_v out_o whilst_o he_o be_v otherwise_o busy_v in_o dissect_v of_o body_n and_o studious_o search_v after_o the_o property_n of_o the_o several_a part_n of_o animal_n and_o wherein_o they_o differ_v from_o each_o other_o and_o all_o this_o he_o do_v in_o that_o space_n of_o time_n which_o even_o now_o we_o assign_v viz._n within_o the_o compass_n of_o one_o and_o twenty_o year_n but_o after_o this_o he_o begin_v to_o expatiate_v §_o 25_o far_a in_o his_o contemplation_n and_o to_o take_v a_o large_a view_n of_o all_o such_o body_n in_o the_o world_n as_o be_v subject_n to_o generation_n and_o corruption_n as_o the_o various_a kind_n of_o animal_n plant_n mineral_n and_o divers_a sort_n of_o stone_n likewise_o the_o earth_n and_o water_n the_o exhalation_n and_o vapour_n the_o ice_n snow_n hail_o smoke_n fire_n and_o hoar-frost_n wherein_o he_o discern_v much_o variety_n of_o quality_n with_o diversity_n of_o action_n and_o motion_n partly_o agree_v with_o partly_o disagree_v from_o each_o other_o for_o as_o he_o give_v his_o mind_n to_o a_o serious_a consideration_n of_o all_o these_o he_o see_v that_o in_o part_n they_o agree_v and_o in_o part_n disagree_v in_o respect_n of_o their_o quality_n as_o also_o that_o as_o they_o be_v one_o in_o respect_n of_o that_o wherein_o they_o agree_v so_o they_o be_v many_o and_o diverse_a in_o respect_n of_o what_o they_o differ_v in_o when_o therefore_o he_o sometime_o look_v into_o the_o property_n of_o several_a creature_n whereby_o they_o be_v distinguish_v from_o one_o another_o he_o discern_v they_o to_o be_v so_o various_a and_o manifold_a that_o they_o be_v past_a number_n and_o that_o nature_n diffuse_v itself_o so_o far_o and_o wide_a that_o it_o be_v

their_o inward_a part_n their_o apprehension_n motion_n and_o inclination_n and_o that_o they_o differ_v not_o from_o one_o another_o but_o in_o some_o sew_v thing_n in_o comparison_n of_o those_o wherein_o they_o agree_v whence_o he_o conclude_v that_o the_o spirit_n which_o be_v in_o the_o whole_a kind_n be_v but_o one_o thing_n not_o otherwise_o differ_v but_o in_o this_o that_o it_o be_v distribute_v into_o several_a heart_n insomuch_o that_o if_o it_o be_v possible_a to_o recollect_v all_o that_o spirit_n which_o be_v disperse_v into_o so_o many_o heart_n and_o gather_v it_o thereunto_o upon_o which_o consideration_n it_o appear_v to_o he_o that_o the_o animal_n spirit_n so_o communicate_v to_o the_o generality_n of_o live_a creature_n be_v in_o very_a truth_n but_o one_o though_o it_o admit_v of_o some_o small_a difference_n whereby_o the_o property_n of_o those_o animal_n become_v distinguish_v from_o each_o other_o even_o as_o spring-water_n which_o original_o have_v the_o same_o cool_a nature_n be_v pour_v into_o several_a vessel_n may_v have_v one_o part_n hot_a and_o another_o cool_a according_a as_o the_o one_o be_v heat_v and_o the_o other_o leave_v to_o its_o natural_a coolness_n so_o likewise_o may_v the_o animal_n spirit_n differ_v in_o regard_n of_o some_o quality_n or_o propriety_n according_a to_o the_o variety_n of_o constitution_n in_o several_a animal_n notwithstanding_o that_o it_o may_v be_v esteem_v but_o one_o and_o the_o same_o as_o that_o spring-water_n be_v although_o in_o some_o respect_n it_o be_v thus_o diversify_v and_o so_o under_o this_o notion_n he_o look_v on_o the_o whole_a kind_n of_o live_a creature_n as_o one_o then_o afterward_o upon_o contemplate_v §_o 29_o the_o diverse_a kind_n of_o plant_n he_o observe_v that_o the_o individual_n of_o every_o kind_n be_v like_o one_o another_o in_o respect_n of_o their_o bough_n and_o branch_n their_o leave_n flower_n or_o bloom_n bud_n and_o fruit_n with_o their_o virtue_n and_o operation_n and_o when_o he_o compare_v they_o with_o animal_n he_o find_v that_o there_o be_v some_o one_o thing_n in_o they_o which_o resemble_v the_o animal_n spirit_n whereof_o they_o be_v all_o partaker_n and_o that_o all_o of_o they_o in_o that_o respect_n be_v but_o one_o thing_n whereupon_o as_o he_o take_v a_o thorough_a view_n of_o the_o generality_n of_o plant_n he_o determine_v with_o himself_o that_o they_o be_v all_o but_o one_o in_o respect_n of_o that_o agreement_n between_o themselves_o in_o their_o operation_n viz._n in_o their_o nourishment_n and_o growth_n after_o this_o he_o comprehend_v the_o §_o 30_o generality_n of_o plant_n and_o animal_n altogether_o in_o one_o and_o the_o same_o conception_n of_o his_o mind_n and_o thereby_o see_v that_o they_o all_o agree_v in_o regard_n of_o both_o these_o namely_o in_o nutrition_n and_o augmentation_n only_o animal_n do_v exceed_v the_o plant_n and_o excel_v they_o in_o this_o that_o they_o have_v sense_n and_o apprehension_n also_o notwithstanding_o he_o observe_v withal_o that_o there_o be_v somewhat_o in_o plant_n which_o resemble_v the_o sense_n of_o animal_n as_o that_o flower_n turn_v themselves_o towards_o the_o sun_n and_o that_o the_o root_n of_o plant_n spread_v themselves_o towards_o that_o part_n of_o the_o earth_n which_o afford_v they_o nourishment_n and_o some_o other_o operation_n like_v to_o these_o whence_o it_o appear_v to_o he_o that_o both_o plant_n and_o animal_n be_v but_o one_o in_o respect_n of_o that_o one_o and_o the_o same_o thing_n which_o be_v common_a to_o they_o both_o although_o in_o the_o one_o it_o be_v perfect_a and_o complete_a in_o the_o other_o more_o limit_v and_o restrain_v by_o some_o impediment_n like_o water_n distribute_v into_o two_o portion_n whereof_o the_o one_o be_v bind_v up_o and_o congeal_v into_o ice_n the_o other_o loose_a and_o fluid_a thus_o far_o then_o he_o conclude_v that_o plant_n and_o animal_n be_v one_o kind_n of_o thing_n then_o he_o contemplate_v those_o body_n §_o 31_o which_o have_v neither_o sense_n nourishment_n nor_o growth_n such_o as_o stone_n earth_n water_n air_n and_o fire_n all_o which_o he_o see_v to_o have_v these_o three_o dimension_n length_n breadth_n and_o thickness_n and_o that_o they_o differ_v not_o otherwise_o among_o themselves_o from_o one_o another_o but_o that_o some_o be_v colour_v other_o not_o some_o hot_a and_o other_o cold_a and_o the_o like_a difference_n he_o observe_v also_o that_o the_o hot_a body_n wax_v cold_a and_o that_o the_o cold_a wax_v hot_a he_o see_v too_o that_o the_o water_n rarefy_v into_o vapour_n and_o that_o the_o vapour_n thicken_v again_o and_o turn_v into_o water_n withal_o he_o observe_v that_o the_o body_n which_o be_v burn_v turn_v into_o coal_n ash_n flame_n and_o smoke_n and_o that_o the_o smoke_n when_o it_o meet_v in_o its_o way_n with_o a_o arch_n of_o stone_n as_o it_o mount_v upward_o thicken_v there_o into_o soot_n and_o become_v like_o other_o earthy_a substance_n whence_o he_o resolve_v with_o himself_o that_o they_o be_v all_o indeed_o but_o one_o thing_n after_o the_o same_o manner_n that_o the_o animal_n and_o plant_n be_v although_o in_o some_o respect_n multiply_v and_o diversify_v then_o consider_v with_o himself_o that_o §_o 32_o one_o thing_n wherein_o he_o observe_v plant_n and_o animal_n to_o

part_n mutual_o conjoin_v to_o each_o other_o and_o that_o all_o the_o body_n which_o he_o have_v before_o consider_v as_o earth_n water_n air_n plant_n animal_n and_o all_o the_o rest_n in_o like_a manner_n be_v comprehend_v in_o it_o so_o that_o none_o of_o they_o go_v beyond_o its_o bound_n he_o find_v also_o that_o the_o whole_a body_n or_o frame_n of_o the_o world_n very_o near_o resemble_v some_o one_o single_a animal_n so_o that_o the_o star_n which_o shine_v therein_o answer_v to_o the_o sense_n the_o diversity_n of_o the_o sphere_n which_o be_v contiguous_a to_o each_o other_o resemble_v the_o variety_n of_o limb_n and_o that_o all_o those_o body_n therein_o which_o be_v liable_a to_o generation_n and_o corruption_n resemble_v those_o thing_n which_o be_v contain_v in_o the_o belly_n of_o a_o animal_n such_o as_o various_a excrement_n and_o humour_n whence_o animal_n also_o be_v often_o generate_v as_o they_o be_v in_o the_o great_a world_n now_o whenas_o he_o be_v thus_o well_o §_o 49_o assure_v that_o all_o these_o thing_n make_v up_o as_o it_o be_v one_o complete_a substance_n which_o stand_v in_o need_n of_o a_o voluntary_a agent_n viz._n to_o produce_v settle_v and_o order_v it_o and_o that_o its_o manifold_a part_n appear_v to_o he_o to_o be_v but_o one_o thing_n in_o like_a manner_n as_o the_o body_n in_o this_o low_a world_n which_o be_v subject_a to_o generation_n and_o corruption_n seem_v but_o one_o he_o propose_v to_o his_o consideration_n the_o world_n in_o general_a and_o debate_v with_o himself_o whether_o it_o be_v a_o thing_n which_o arise_v anew_o whereas_o before_o it_o have_v not_o a_o be_v and_o so_o come_v forth_o of_o nothing_o to_o obtain_v a_o existence_n or_o whether_o it_o be_v a_o thing_n which_o have_v always_o exi_v and_o never_o want_v a_o be_v concern_v this_o matter_n he_o have_v very_o many_o and_o great_a doubt_n within_o himself_o so_o that_o neither_o of_o these_o two_o opinion_n do_v oversway_v the_o probability_n of_o the_o other_o for_o when_o he_o propose_v to_o himself_o the_o belief_n of_o eternity_n many_o objection_n come_v in_o his_o way_n touch_v the_o impossibility_n of_o a_o infinite_a be_v in_o like_a manner_n as_o the_o existence_n of_o a_o infinite_a body_n have_v seem_v impossible_a to_o he_o he_o see_v likewise_o that_o whatsoever_o substance_n be_v not_o void_a of_o accident_n anew_o produce_v but_o always_o endue_v with_o they_o must_v also_o necessary_o be_v produce_v together_o with_o they_o because_o it_o can_v be_v say_v to_o be_v produce_v before_o they_o see_v then_o such_o a_o substance_n can_v be_v say_v to_o be_v existent_a before_o such_o accident_n produce_v anew_o it_o must_v also_o be_v say_v to_o have_v its_o existence_n anew_o on_o the_o other_o side_n when_o he_o propose_v to_o himself_o the_o belief_n of_o its_o be_v produce_v anew_o some_o other_o objection_n thwart_v he_o especial_o this_o that_o the_o notion_n of_o its_o production_n anew_o after_o non_fw-fr existence_n can_v not_o be_v understand_v unless_o some_o time_n be_v suppose_v which_o be_v precedent_n to_o its_o existence_n whereas_o time_n be_v in_o the_o number_n of_o those_o thing_n which_o belong_v to_o the_o world_n and_o be_v inseparable_a from_o it_o so_o that_o it_o can_v not_o be_v say_v to_o be_v late_a than_o time_n or_o to_o have_v its_o be_v after_o it_o he_o also_o thus_o reason_v with_o himself_o if_o the_o world_n be_v produce_v anew_o it_o must_v needs_o have_v some_o cause_n that_o produce_v it_o and_o if_o so_o why_o do_v that_o cause_n produce_v it_o now_o and_o not_o before_o be_v it_o because_o some_o motive_n superven_v which_o it_o have_v not_o before_o but_o it_o be_v suppose_v that_o there_o be_v nothing_o then_o existent_a beside_o the_o cause_n itself_o be_v it_o then_o by_o reason_n of_o some_o change_n which_o befall_v the_o effence_n of_o this_o cause_n if_o so_o what_o cause_v this_o change_n thus_o he_o cease_v not_o for_o some_o year_n to_o ponder_v these_o thing_n in_o his_o mind_n and_o to_o argue_v with_o himself_o pro_n and_o con._n for_o many_o argument_n offer_v themselves_o to_o he_o on_o either_o side_n so_o that_o neither_o of_o these_o two_o opinion_n in_o his_o judgement_n overpoize_v the_o other_o whereas_o therefore_o this_o seem_v to_o §_o 50_o him_z very_a difficult_a to_o resolve_v he_o begin_v to_o think_v with_o himself_o what_o will_v be_v the_o necessary_a consequence_n of_o either_o opinion_n for_o perhaps_o think_v he_o there_o will_v be_v the_o same_o consequence_n of_o both_o whereupon_o he_o see_v that_o if_o he_o suppose_v the_o world_n to_o have_v be_v create_v anew_o and_o so_o to_o have_v have_v its_o existence_n out_o of_o nothing_o it_o will_v necessary_o follow_v thence_o that_o it_o can_v not_o have_v rise_v to_o this_o existence_n by_o any_o power_n of_o its_o own_o but_o contrariwise_o require_v some_o efficient_a cause_n which_o give_v it_o a_o actual_a be_v withal_o he_o see_v that_o this_o efficient_a can_v not_o be_v apprehend_v by_o any_o of_o the_o sense_n for_o than_o it_o will_v be_v a_o bodily_a substance_n which_o if_o it_o be_v it_o will_v be_v one_o of_o those_o thing_n that_o belong_v to_o the_o world_n and_o so_o will_v have_v have_v its_o existence_n anew_o and_o withal_o will_v have_v stand_v in_o need_n of_o some_o other_o cause_n which_o shall_v have_v produce_v it_o anew_o and_o if_o this_o second_o efficient_a also_o be_v a_o body_n it_o will_v have_v need_v a_o three_o to_o produce_v it_o and_o that_o a_o four_o and_o so_o there_o will_v have_v be_v a_o progress_n in_o infinitum_fw-la without_o fix_v in_o any_o first_o cause_n which_o to_o suppose_v be_v absurd_a and_o irrational_a the_o world_n therefore_o must_v necessary_o have_v such_o a_o efficient_a cause_n which_o be_v not_o a_o bodily_a substance_n and_o see_v it_o be_v not_o a_o body_n there_o be_v no_o reason_n that_o it_o shall_v be_v apprehend_v by_o any_o of_o the_o sense_n for_o the_o five_o sense_n apprehend_v nothing_o but_o body_n or_o such_o accident_n as_o adhere_v to_o body_n and_o see_v it_o can_v be_v apprehend_v by_o sense_n neither_o can_v it_o be_v comprehend_v by_o the_o imagination_n for_o the_o imagination_n be_v nothing_o else_o but_o the_o representation_n of_o the_o form_n or_o image_n of_o those_o thing_n which_o be_v apprehend_v by_o sense_n when_o the_o bodily_a object_n themselves_o be_v remove_v see_v then_o that_o it_o be_v not_o a_o body_n neither_o can_v any_o property_n of_o the_o body_n be_v attribute_v ot_fw-mi it_o now_o the_o first_o and_o chief_a property_n of_o a_o body_n be_v the_o threefold_a extension_n viz._n towards_o length_n breadth_n and_o thickness_n wherefore_o he_o be_v far_o from_o have_v any_o such_o extension_n or_o any_o accident_n of_o body_n which_o be_v consequent_a to_o this_o property_n and_o see_v that_o he_o be_v the_o maker_n of_o the_o world_n doubtless_o he_o know_v what_o it_o be_v and_o whatsoever_o be_v in_o it_o and_o withal_o have_v the_o sovereign_a command_n and_o order_v thereof_o shall_v not_o he_o know_v it_o who_o create_v it_o for_o he_o be_v most_o eminent_a in_o knowledge_n and_o omniscient_a he_o see_v also_o that_o if_o he_o believe_v §_o 51_o the_o eternity_n of_o the_o world_n and_o that_o it_o have_v diffuse_v in_o any_o certain_a body_n and_o disperse_v throughout_o it_o be_v also_o divide_v together_o with_o that_o
be_v unite_v he_o see_v that_o it_o must_v necessary_o be_v some_o body_n like_o to_o these_o body_n have_v length_n and_o breadth_n and_o thickness_n and_o that_o it_o be_v either_o hot_a or_o cold_a as_o one_o of_o these_o other_o body_n which_o be_v destitute_a of_o sense_n and_o uncapable_a of_o nourishment_n but_o that_o it_o differ_v from_o they_o in_o such_o action_n as_o proceed_v from_o it_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o organical_a part_n which_o belong_v to_o plant_n and_o animal_n but_o not_o otherwise_o and_o perhaps_o such_o action_n be_v not_o essential_a to_o that_o body_n but_o derive_v to_o it_o from_o some_o other_o cause_n that_o be_v extrinsical_a thereto_o so_o that_o if_o they_o be_v in_o like_a manner_n communicate_v to_o other_o body_n they_o will_v be_v like_a unto_o this_o when_o he_o therefore_o consider_v that_o body_n in_o its_o essence_n as_o strip_v naked_a of_o all_o these_o operation_n which_o at_o the_o first_o sight_n seem_v to_o proceed_v from_o thence_o he_o see_v that_o it_o be_v no_o other_o thing_n than_o a_o body_n of_o the_o same_o kind_n with_o these_o upon_o which_o contemplation_n it_o appear_v unto_o he_o that_o all_o body_n take_v in_o general_n be_v but_o one_o as_o well_o those_o which_o have_v life_n as_o those_o which_o have_v none_o as_o well_o those_o which_o move_v as_o those_o which_o rest_v in_o their_o natural_a place_n only_o it_o appear_v that_o action_n proceed_v from_o some_o of_o they_o by_o mean_n of_o their_o organical_a part_n concern_v which_o he_o as_o yet_o know_v not_o whether_o they_o be_v essential_a to_o they_o or_o derive_v to_o they_o from_o without_o now_o whilst_o he_o be_v in_o this_o state_n of_o mind_n he_o extend_v not_o his_o thought_n beyond_o bodily_a substance_n and_o thereby_o he_o see_v that_o the_o whole_a frame_n of_o the_o creature_n be_v but_o one_o thing_n which_o former_o he_o have_v look_v upon_o and_o esteem_v as_o many_o without_o number_n or_o end_n in_o this_o opinion_n and_o state_n of_o mind_n §_o 33_o he_o continue_v for_o some_o time_n but_o afterward_o upon_o a_o view_n of_o all_o body_n as_o well_o animate_v as_o inanimate_a which_o sometime_o seem_v to_o be_v but_o one_o thing_n to_o he_o but_o otherwhiles_o many_o and_o innumerable_a he_o see_v that_o one_o of_o these_o motion_n be_v natural_a and_o necessary_a to_o they_o viz._n upward_o or_o downward_o upward_o as_o in_o smoke_n flame_n and_o air_n when_o detain_v under_o water_n downward_o as_o in_o water_n earth_n and_o its_o part_n all_o earthy_a body_n with_o the_o part_n of_o animal_n and_o plant_n also_o that_o not_o one_o of_o all_o these_o body_n be_v void_a of_o both_o these_o motion_n neither_o ever_o rest_v but_o when_o some_o other_o body_n come_v it_o its_o way_n and_o interrupt_v its_o motion_n as_o when_o a_o stone_n in_o its_o descension_n meet_v with_o the_o solid_a surface_n of_o the_o earth_n which_o it_o can_v pierce_v through_o whereas_o if_o it_o can_v it_o will_v move_v downward_o still_o as_o every_o body_n know_v and_o therefore_o if_o one_o do_v but_o lift_v it_o up_o from_o the_o earth_n he_o will_v find_v it_o to_o resist_v that_o motion_n by_o press_v down_o his_o hand_n out_o of_o a_o propension_n it_o have_v to_o descend_v again_o unto_o the_o same_o place_n in_o like_a manner_n smoke_n in_o its_o mount_a upward_o be_v not_o beat_v back_o again_o unless_o it_o meet_v by_o the_o way_n with_o some_o solid_a arch_a body_n which_o stop_v it_o in_o its_o course_n and_o than_o it_o will_v turn_v aside_o to_o the_o right_a hand_n or_o to_o the_o left_a but_o as_o soon_o as_o it_o have_v get_v out_o and_o free_v itself_o from_o that_o body_n which_o hinder_v its_o motion_n it_o mount_v up_o again_o and_o make_v its_o way_n through_o the_o air_n without_o any_o interruption_n he_o observe_v also_o that_o if_o a_o leather_n bag_n be_v fill_v with_o air_n then_o tie_v hard_o together_o and_o plunge_v into_o the_o water_n it_o will_v strive_v to_o get_v upward_o and_o struggle_v under_o the_o water_n that_o detain_v it_o nor_o ever_o cease_v to_o do_v so_o until_o it_o have_v get_v forth_o and_o what_o be_v the_o nature_n of_o a_o body_n in_o general_n and_o abstract_o consider_v without_o any_o of_o those_o quality_n which_o cause_n a_o multiplicity_n and_o diversity_n of_o kind_n but_o when_o he_o find_v this_o too_o difficult_a a_o task_n for_o he_o and_o that_o have_v consider_v all_o those_o body_n which_o among_o the_o rest_n be_v least_o subject_n to_o these_o quality_n yet_o can_v he_o see_v none_o of_o they_o in_o any_o wise_a void_a of_o one_o of_o the_o two_o viz._n either_o of_o heaviness_n or_o lightness_n he_o far_o consider_v with_o himself_o whether_o these_o two_o quality_n belong_v to_o the_o body_n as_o it_o be_v a_o body_n or_o to_o some_o other_o notion_n superad_v to_o the_o body_n now_o upon_o this_o consideration_n it_o seem_v to_o he_o that_o they_o agree_v to_o some_o notion_n superad_v unto_o the_o body_n because_o that_o if_o they_o belong_v to_o the_o body_n as_o it_o be_v a_o body_n no_o one_o body_n can_v be_v find_v wherein_o both_o of_o they_o be_v not_o whereas_o we_o find_v some_o heavy_a body_n which_o be_v void_a of_o all_o lightness_n and_o some_o light_a body_n which_o be_v void_a of_o all_o heaviness_n and_o these_o two_o be_v doubtless_o two_o distinct_a body_n to_o either_o of_o which_o belong_v some_o notion_n superad_v to_o its_o bodily_a nature_n whereby_o it_o be_v distinguish_v from_o the_o other_o which_o notion_n be_v that_o whereby_o the_o one_o of_o they_o become_v diverse_a from_o the_o other_o see_v if_o this_o be_v away_o they_o both_o will_v be_v the_o same_o thing_n in_o every_o respect_n it_o appear_v therefore_o very_o plain_o to_o he_o that_o the_o nature_n or_o essence_n of_o both_o these_o body_n be_v compound_v of_o two_o notion_n the_o one_o wherein_o they_o both_o agree_v and_o this_o be_v the_o notion_n of_o corporeity_n or_o bodily_a substance_n the_o other_o whereby_o the_o essence_n of_o the_o one_o be_v diversify_v from_o the_o essence_n of_o the_o other_o and_o this_o be_v the_o notion_n of_o heaviness_n in_o the_o one_o and_o of_o lightness_n in_o the_o other_o whereby_o the_o one_o move_v upward_o and_o the_o other_o downward_o both_o which_o be_v adjoin_v and_o superad_v to_o the_o notion_n of_o corporeity_n or_o bodily_a substance_n in_o like_a manner_n he_o contemplate_v §_o 35_o also_o the_o body_n of_o other_o creature_n whether_o they_o be_v animate_v or_o inanimate_a whereupon_o he_o see_v that_o the_o essence_n of_o every_o one_o of_o they_o consist_v in_o this_o that_o they_o be_v all_o compound_v of_o a_o double_a notion_n namely_o that_o of_o corporeity_n and_o of_o some_o other_o thing_n superad_v thereto_o whether_o the_o thing_n be_v one_o or_o manifold_a and_o thus_o the_o form_n of_o body_n come_v to_o be_v know_v unto_o he_o according_a to_o their_o diversity_n which_o be_v the_o first_o notion_n that_o he_o have_v relate_v to_o the_o spiritual_a world_n to_o wit_n the_o notion_n of_o these_o form_n which_o be_v not_o unto_o he_o it_o appear_v also_o to_o he_o that_o his_o own_o animal_n spirit_n which_o be_v seat_v in_o his_o heart_n as_o have_v be_v afore_o declare_v must_v needs_o superadd_a another_o distinct_a notion_n to_o his_o corporeity_n as_o that_o whereby_o he_o be_v enable_v to_o perform_v such_o wonderful_a operation_n as_o appear_v in_o the_o various_a manner_n of_o sensation_n and_o way_n of_o apprehension_n with_o the_o diversity_n of_o motion_n which_o it_o cause_v in_o the_o body_n as_o also_o that_o this_o notion_n be_v his_o proper_a form_n or_o difference_n whereby_o he_o be_v distinguish_v from_o other_o body_n viz._n the_o same_o which_o the_o philosopher_n call_v the_o animal_n that_o be_v the_o sensitive_a soul_n so_o likewise_o that_o the_o principle_n which_o in_o plant_n supply_v the_o place_n of_o that_o radical_a heat_n which_o be_v in_o animal_n
consideration_n he_o perceive_v that_o beside_o this_o extension_n there_o be_v another_o notion_n of_o that_o wherein_o the_o extension_n do_v exist_v see_v that_o it_o can_v not_o exist_v of_o itself_o as_o neither_o that_o body_n which_o be_v extend_v can_v exist_v of_o itself_o alone_o without_o extension_n then_o he_o far_o consider_v the_o nature_n of_o this_o extension_n in_o some_o of_o those_o sensible_a body_n which_o be_v endue_v with_o form_n as_o for_o example_n in_o clay_n and_o he_o observe_v that_o when_o it_o be_v mould_v into_o any_o figure_n as_o for_o instance_n a_o globous_a one_o it_o have_v length_n breadth_n and_o thickness_n according_a to_o a_o certain_a proportion_n then_o if_o afterward_o this_o globous_a body_n of_o clay_n be_v change_v into_o a_o foursquare_a or_o oval_a figure_n that_o the_o length_n breadth_n and_o thickness_n be_v change_v and_o have_v another_o proportion_n than_o before_o they_o have_v but_o that_o the_o clay_n be_v the_o same_o still_o and_o remain_v unchanged_a only_o it_o have_v that_o which_o it_o must_v necessary_o have_v length_n breadth_n and_o thickness_n in_o some_o proportion_n or_o other_o see_v it_o can_v not_o be_v whole_o deprive_v of_o they_o then_o he_o far_o discern_v by_o this_o §_o 41_o successive_a change_n of_o figure_n in_o the_o same_o body_n of_o clay_n that_o this_o diversity_n of_o figure_n be_v a_o distinct_a notion_n from_o that_o body_n as_o also_o in_o that_o he_o see_v the_o body_n of_o the_o clay_n can_v not_o be_v altogether_o without_o they_o it_o plain_o appear_v to_o he_o that_o they_o belong_v to_o its_o essence_n and_o from_o this_o contemplation_n it_o be_v apparent_a to_o he_o that_o a_o body_n consider_v as_o a_o body_n be_v indeed_o compound_v of_o two_o notion_n as_o for_o example_n the_o body_n of_o the_o clay_n as_o consider_v under_o a_o globous_a figure_n and_o the_o same_o consider_v as_o have_v only_o the_o threefold_a extension_n of_o length_n breadth_n and_o thickness_n whether_o in_o a_o globous_a or_o a_o square_n or_o any_o other_o figure_n he_o see_v also_o that_o it_o be_v impossible_a to_o conceive_v any_o body_n which_o be_v not_o make_v up_o of_o these_o two_o notion_n and_o that_o the_o one_o of_o they_o can_v not_o possible_o subsist_v without_o the_o other_o withal_o he_o see_v that_o the_o one_o notion_n namely_o that_o of_o extension_n which_o can_v be_v change_v and_o successive_o put_v on_o diversity_n of_o figure_n do_v represent_v the_o form_n in_o all_o those_o body_n which_o be_v endue_v with_o form_n or_o figure_n but_o that_o the_o other_o which_o still_o abode_n in_o the_o same_o state_n as_o for_o example_n the_o substantial_a body_n of_o the_o clay_n do_v represent_v the_o notion_n of_o corporeity_n which_o belong_v to_o all_o body_n of_o what_o form_n soever_o now_o that_o which_o we_o call_v clay_n in_o the_o precedent_a instance_n be_v the_o same_o which_o the_o philosopher_n call_v materia_fw-la prima_fw-la the_o first_o matter_n and_o 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d which_o be_v whole_o void_a of_o all_o sort_n of_o form_n now_o when_o his_o contemplation_n §_o 42_o have_v proceed_v thus_o far_o and_o have_v withdraw_v itself_o from_o the_o object_n of_o sense_n so_o that_o he_o now_o draw_v near_o to_o the_o confine_n of_o the_o intellectual_a world_n he_o begin_v to_o be_v somewhat_o amaze_v and_o thereupon_o bend_v his_o thought_n again_o downward_o he_o return_v more_o serious_o to_o consider_v and_o more_o thorough_o to_o examine_v that_o in_o the_o sensible_a world_n whereunto_o he_o he_o have_v be_v accustom_v wherefore_o he_o retire_v back_o a_o little_a and_o forbear_v to_o meditate_v on_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o body_n in_o general_n it_o be_v a_o thing_n which_o he_o can_v not_o take_v hold_n of_o by_o his_o sense_n nor_o as_o yet_o comprehend_v in_o his_o mind_n he_o undertake_v to_o consider_v the_o most_o simple_a of_o those_o sensible_a body_n which_o he_o have_v see_v namely_o those_o four_o about_o which_o his_o contemplation_n have_v before_o exercise_v itself_o and_o first_o of_o all_o he_o consider_v the_o water_n as_o to_o which_o he_o see_v that_o when_o it_o abide_v in_o that_o state_n which_o its_o form_n require_v there_o appear_v therein_o a_o sensible_a cold_a and_o a_o propension_n to_o move_v downward_o but_o that_o when_o it_o be_v heat_v by_o the_o fire_n or_o the_o warm_a beam_n of_o the_o sun_n the_o cold_a first_o withdraw_v itself_o and_o depart_v the_o propension_n to_o move_v downward_o still_o remain_v but_o that_o afterward_o when_o it_o become_v more_o vehement_o heat_v its_o propension_n to_o move_v downward_o then_o likewise_o forsake_v it_o so_o that_o it_o strive_v to_o move_v upward_o and_o evaporate_v into_o the_o air_n so_o that_o both_o of_o these_o quality_n whole_o leave_v it_o which_o before_o have_v always_o issue_v from_o its_o nature_n and_o form_n neither_o know_v he_o any_o thing_n far_o concern_v its_o form_n but_o that_o these_o two_o action_n proceed_v thence_o and_o that_o when_o they_o both_o forsake_v it_o the_o nature_n or_o state_n of_o the_o form_n be_v whole_o take_v away_o so_o that_o the_o watery_a form_n depart_v out_o of_o that_o body_n see_v that_o action_n proceed_v therefrom_o which_o proper_o belong_v to_o another_o form_n and_o that_o another_o form_n in_o its_o place_n arise_v which_o before_o be_v not_o in_o the_o water_n see_v that_o action_n proceed_v from_o it_o which_o can_v not_o natural_o proceed_v thence_o whilst_o it_o retain_v its_o former_a form_n now_o he_o well_o know_v that_o when_o §_o 43_o any_o thing_n be_v anew_o produce_v it_o must_v needs_o have_v some_o producer_n and_o from_o this_o contemplation_n there_o be_v wrought_v in_o his_o mind_n a_o kind_n of_o a_o general_a and_o confuse_a impression_n of_o the_o effector_n of_o that_o form_n then_o he_o far_o direct_v his_o speculation_n to_o the_o consider_v of_o those_o form_n to_o the_o knowledge_n whereof_o he_o have_v before_o attain_v contemplate_v they_o one_o after_o another_o whereupon_o he_o see_v that_o they_o all_o have_v their_o existence_n anew_o and_o so_o necessary_o require_v some_o efficient_a cause_n then_o he_o examine_v and_o diligent_o consider_v the_o essence_n of_o form_n and_o see_v that_o they_o be_v nothing_o else_o but_o such_o or_o such_o a_o disposition_n of_o the_o body_n from_o which_o those_o action_n proceed_v for_o instance_n in_o water_n when_o that_o be_v vehement_o heat_v it_o be_v dispose_v to_o move_v upward_o and_o make_v apt_a thereto_o and_o that_o disposition_n be_v its_o form_n see_v there_o be_v nothing_o present_a in_o this_o motion_n but_o the_o body_n of_o the_o water_n and_o some_o accident_n proceed_v thence_o which_o exist_v not_o before_o and_o be_v the_o object_n of_o sense_n such_o as_o quality_n and_o motion_n and_o the_o efficient_a which_o produce_v they_o whereas_o those_o accident_n have_v no_o existence_n before_o so_o that_o the_o aptitude_n of_o the_o body_n to_o some_o motion_n before_o other_o be_v its_o disposition_n and_o form_n and_o the_o same_o truth_n appear_v to_o he_o as_o to_o all_o other_o form_n he_o also_o clear_o see_v that_o the_o action_n which_o proceed_v from_o these_o body_n be_v not_o proper_o they_o but_o belong_v to_o that_o efficient_a which_o by_o those_o action_n produce_v those_o attribute_n that_o be_v ascribe_v to_o they_o and_o this_o notion_n which_o thus_o appear_v to_o he_o be_v the_o same_o thing_n which_o be_v say_v by_o the_o messenger_n of_o god_n viz._n mahomet_n i_o be_o his_o hear_n whereby_o he_o hear_v and_o his_o sight_n whereby_o he_o see_v and_o in_o the_o text_n of_o the_o alcoran_n cap._n al_n anphali_n you_o have_v not_o slay_v they_o but_o god_n have_v slay_v they_o and_o thou_o have_v not_o cast_v they_o away_o but_o god_n have_v cast_v they_o away_o now_o whenas_o he_o be_v certain_o §_o 44_o assure_v of_o this_o efficient_a the_o which_o appear_v to_o he_o in_o general_n and_o confuse_o a_o vehement_a desire_n seize_v on_o he_o to_o get_v a_o distinct_a knowledge_n thereof_o but_o because_o he_o have_v not_o as_o yet_o withdraw_v and_o sequester_v himself_o from_o the_o sensible_a world_n he_o begin_v to_o seek_v this_o voluntary_a agent_n among_o thing_n sensible_a neither_o as_o yet_o know_v he_o whether_o it_o be_v one_o agent_n or_o many_o wherefore_o he_o take_v a_o view_n of_o all_o the_o body_n that_o be_v near_o he_o those_o namely_o which_o his_o thought_n have_v be_v continual_o fix_v upon_o all_o which_o he_o see_v be_v successive_o liable_a to_o generation_n and_o corruption_n if_o not_o in_o the_o whole_a at_o least_o in_o their_o part_n as_o for_o example_n he_o see_v that_o the_o part_n both_o of_o water_n and_o earth_n be_v corrupt_v by_o fire_n he_o see_v likewise_o that_o the_o air_n be_v
influx_n of_o that_o voluntary_a agent_n so_o illustrious_o glorious_a the_o fountain_n of_o be_v and_o of_o work_v he_o know_v therefore_o that_o whatsoever_o excellency_n be_v by_o nature_n in_o he_o be_v by_o so_o much_o the_o great_a more_o perfect_a and_o more_o absolute_a more_o beautiful_a illustrious_a and_o more_o last_v and_o that_o there_o be_v no_o proportion_n between_o those_o excellency_n which_o be_v in_o he_o and_o those_o which_o be_v find_v in_o the_o creature_n neither_o do_v he_o cease_v to_o prosecute_v this_o search_n till_o he_o have_v go_v through_o all_o the_o kind_n of_o perfection_n and_o see_v that_o they_o be_v all_o in_o he_o and_o proceed_v from_o he_o and_o that_o he_o be_v most_o worthy_a to_o have_v they_o all_o ascribe_v to_o he_o above_o all_o the_o creature_n which_o be_v entitle_v to_o they_o he_o also_o search_v into_o all_o sort_n of_o §_o 55_o defect_n or_o imperfection_n and_o see_v that_o the_o maker_n of_o the_o world_n be_v void_a of_o they_o all_o and_o separate_v from_o they_o and_o how_o indeed_o shall_v he_o not_o be_v free_a from_o all_o such_o for_o what_o other_o notion_n be_v there_o of_o a_o defect_n beside_o that_o of_o mere_a privation_n or_o what_o depend_v upon_o it_o and_o how_o shall_v he_o any_o way_n or_o in_o any_o degree_n partake_v of_o privation_n who_o be_v a_o most_o simple_a be_v and_o of_o a_o necessary_a existence_n in_o himself_o who_o give_v a_o be_v to_o every_o thing_n that_o exist_v and_o beside_o who_o there_o be_v no_o existence_n for_o he_o alone_o be_v existence_n as_o who_o alone_o have_v it_o of_o himself_o he_o be_v absoluteness_n he_o be_v perfection_n he_o be_v beauty_n he_o be_v brightness_n he_o be_v power_n he_o be_v knowledge_n he_o last_o be_v that_o he_o who_o be_v the_o only_o he_o and_o all_o beside_o he_o be_v subject_a to_o perish_v alc._n c._n alkesas_n thus_o far_o his_o knowledge_n have_v bring_v §_o 56_o him_z towards_o the_o end_n of_o the_o five_o septenary_n from_o his_o birth_n that_o be_v in_o the_o space_n of_o thirty_o and_o five_o year_n and_o the_o consideration_n of_o this_o supreme_a agent_n be_v then_o so_o fix_v in_o his_o mind_n that_o it_o hinder_v he_o from_o think_v on_o any_o other_o thing_n beside_o so_o that_o he_o forget_v the_o contemplation_n of_o the_o natural_a existence_n of_o they_o wherein_o he_o have_v before_o exercise_v his_o thought_n and_o leave_v off_o to_o inquire_v any_o far_a into_o they_o until_o at_o length_n he_o come_v so_o far_o that_o the_o eye_n of_o his_o mind_n can_v not_o light_v upon_o any_o thing_n in_o the_o world_n but_o that_o he_o straightway_o discover_v therein_o some_o sootstep_n of_o this_o supreme_a agent_n so_o that_o let_v pass_v the_o work_n he_o present_o remove_v his_o thought_n to_o the_o opificer_n on_o who_o his_o study_n be_v most_o earnest_o bend_v insomuch_o that_o his_o heart_n be_v whole_o now_o withdraw_v from_o think_v on_o or_o mind_v this_o inferior_a world_n which_o contain_v the_o object_n of_o sense_n become_v whole_o addict_v and_o altogether_o apply_v itself_o to_o the_o contemplation_n of_o the_o upper_a intellectual_a world_n now_o when_o he_o have_v attain_v to_o the_o §_o 57_o knowledge_n of_o this_o supreme_a be_v this_o permanent_a existence_n which_o have_v no_o cause_n of_o its_o existence_n but_o itself_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o the_o existence_n of_o all_o other_o thing_n he_o next_o desire_v to_o know_v by_o what_o mean_v he_o come_v to_o this_o knowledge_n and_o with_o what_o faculty_n he_o apprehend_v this_o prime_n existent_a he_o make_v enquiry_n therefore_o into_o all_o his_o sense_n viz._n hear_v see_v smell_a taste_v and_o touch_v and_o see_v that_o all_o these_o apprehend_v nothing_o but_o what_o be_v bodily_a or_o inherent_a in_o a_o body_n for_o hear_v apprehend_v nothing_o but_o sound_n which_o arise_v from_o the_o agitation_n of_o the_o air_n when_o body_n be_v dash_v one_o against_o another_o sight_n apprehend_v colour_n the_o smell_a odour_n the_o taste_n savour_n and_o the_o touch_n the_o temperature_n or_o disposition_n of_o the_o body_n such_o as_o hardness_n and_o softness_n roughness_n and_o smoothness_n in_o like_a manner_n the_o fancy_n apprehend_v nothing_o but_o as_o it_o have_v length_n breadth_n and_o thickness_n now_o the_o thing_n which_o be_v thus_o apprehend_v be_v all_o of_o they_o the_o adjunct_n of_o body_n and_o our_o sense_n apprehend_v nothing_o else_o inasmuch_o as_o they_o be_v faculty_n diffuse_v throughout_o our_o body_n and_o divisible_a according_a as_o they_o be_v divide_v whence_o it_o follow_v that_o these_o sense_n of_o we_o can_v apprehend_v nothing_o beside_o a_o body_n which_o be_v liable_a to_o division_n for_o this_o faculty_n see_v it_o be_v diffuse_v through_o a_o divisible_a body_n as_o often_o as_o it_o apprehend_v any_o thing_n must_v needs_o be_v divide_v answerable_o to_o the_o division_n of_o that_o body_n wherein_o it_o be_v whence_o we_o may_v conclude_v that_o every_o faculty_n which_o be_v seat_v in_o the_o body_n can_v apprehend_v nothing_o except_o a_o body_n or_o what_o be_v inherent_a in_o a_o body_n now_o it_o have_v be_v already_o make_v evident_a that_o this_o supreme_a be_v which_o have_v a_o necessary_a existence_n be_v in_o every_o respect_n free_a from_o all_o thing_n whatsoever_o belong_v to_o a_o body_n and_o that_o therefore_o there_o be_v no_o other_o way_n or_o mean_n of_o apprehend_v it_o but_o by_o somewhat_o that_o be_v not_o a_o body_n nor_o a_o faculty_n inherent_a in_o the_o body_n or_o any_o other_o way_n depend_v upon_o it_o by_o somewhat_o that_o be_v neither_o within_o nor_o without_o the_o body_n neither_o join_v to_o it_o nor_o separate_v from_o it_o it_o appear_v also_o now_o unto_o he_o that_o he_o apprehend_v this_o supreme_a be_v by_o that_o which_o be_v his_o essence_n and_o that_o he_o have_v a_o firm_a knowledge_n of_o this_o be_v whence_o it_o be_v clear_a to_o he_o that_o his_o essence_n whereby_o he_o apprehend_v it_o be_v somewhat_o incorporeal_a which_o have_v no_o adjunct_n of_o a_o body_n agree_v to_o it_o and_o that_o whatsoever_o bodily_a thing_n he_o apprehend_v by_o his_o outward_a part_n that_o be_v by_o his_o bodily_a sense_n be_v not_o the_o true_a state_n or_o nature_n of_o his_o essence_n but_o that_o some_o other_o thing_n it_o be_v of_o a_o incorporeal_a substance_n whereby_o he_o apprehend_v that_o absolute_a perfect_a and_o independent_a be_v which_o be_v necessary_o and_o of_o itself_o existent_a thus_o when_o he_o come_v to_o know_v that_o §_o 58_o his_o essence_n be_v not_o a_o corporeal_a substance_n apprehensible_a by_o any_o of_o his_o sense_n or_o compass_v about_o by_o his_o skin_n as_o his_o entrail_n be_v his_o body_n begin_v to_o appear_v a_o very_a contemptible_a thing_n to_o he_o so_o that_o he_o whole_o addict_v himself_o to_o the_o contemplation_n of_o that_o noble_a essence_n whereby_o he_o apprehend_v that_o superexcellent_a be_v which_o necessary_o exi_v then_o by_o virtue_n of_o that_o same_o noble_a essence_n of_o he_o he_o consider_v with_o himself_o whether_o it_o can_v perish_v be_v corrupt_v and_o vanish_v away_o or_o on_o the_o other_o side_n be_v of_o perpetual_a duration_n whereupon_o he_o see_v that_o corruption_n and_o dissolution_n belong_v to_o the_o adjunct_n of_o body_n and_o consist_v in_o put_v off_o one_o form_n and_o put_v on_o another_o as_o for_o instance_n when_o water_n be_v turn_v into_o air_n by_o rarefaction_n and_o air_n turn_v into_o water_n by_o condensation_n when_o body_n also_o be_v reduce_v into_o earth_n or_o ash_n or_o when_o the_o moisture_n and_o vigour_n of_o the_o earth_n be_v change_v into_o the_o substance_n of_o various_a sort_n of_o plant_n which_o grow_v out_o of_o it_o and_o be_v nourish_v by_o it_o for_o this_o be_v the_o true_a notion_n of_o corruption_n so_o then_o we_o can_v any_o way_n suppose_v that_o to_o be_v liable_a unto_o corruption_n which_o be_v neither_o a_o body_n nor_o needs_o a_o body_n for_o its_o subsistence_n but_o be_v whole_o diverse_a and_o separate_v from_o all_o bodily_a thing_n now_o when_o he_o be_v thus_o well_o assure_v §_o 59_o that_o his_o essence_n true_o so_o call_v viz._n his_o soul_n be_v incorruptible_a he_o desire_v to_o know_v what_o will_v be_v the_o condition_n thereof_o when_o it_o leave_v the_o body_n and_o be_v separate_v therefrom_o upon_o which_o consideration_n it_o appear_v to_o he_o that_o it_o take_v not_o its_o farewell_n of_o the_o body_n until_o it_o become_v a_o instrument_n whole_o unfit_a for_o its_o use_n so_o then_o as_o he_o weigh_v in_o his_o mind_n all_o his_o apprehensive_a faculty_n he_o see_v that_o every_o one_o of_o they_o apprehend_v its_o object_n sometime_o potential_o and_o sometime_o actual_o as_o when_o the_o eye_n wink_v or_o turn_v
so_o that_o both_o its_o existence_n and_o its_o life_n must_v needs_o be_v very_o infirm_a but_o that_o plant_n have_v a_o strong_a life_n and_o animal_n a_o life_n more_o manifest_a than_o the_o plant_n the_o reason_n whereof_o be_v because_o if_o there_o be_v find_v any_o body_n among_o the_o compound_a one_o wherein_o the_o nature_n of_o any_o one_o of_o the_o element_n prevail_v above_o the_o rest_n that_o as_o far_o as_o it_o be_v able_a will_v conquer_v the_o nature_n of_o the_o other_o element_n and_o make_v void_a their_o activity_n so_o that_o the_o whole_a compound_n will_v lie_v under_o the_o power_n of_o the_o prevail_a element_n whence_o it_o will_v follow_v that_o such_o a_o compound_v will_v be_v in_o a_o capacity_n to_o exercise_v but_o a_o very_a small_a portion_n of_o life_n according_a as_o that_o domineer_a element_n be_v dispose_v to_o exercise_v it_o but_o if_o among_o these_o compound_n §_o 65_o there_o be_v any_o find_v wherein_o the_o nature_n of_o one_o element_n do_v not_o prevail_v above_o the_o rest_n than_o all_o the_o part_n thereof_o will_v be_v of_o a_o equal_a temper_n and_o alike_o vigour_n so_o that_o no_o one_o of_o they_o will_v repress_v the_o operation_n or_o abate_v the_o force_n of_o the_o other_o any_o more_o than_o its_o own_o force_n be_v abate_v by_o it_o so_o that_o they_o work_v upon_o each_o other_o with_o a_o like_a strength_n and_o activity_n the_o operation_n of_o one_o element_n not_o be_v any_o way_n more_o observable_a than_o the_o operation_n of_o another_o nor_o any_o one_o prevail_v above_o the_o other_o in_o which_o respect_n it_o be_v far_o from_o be_v like_o any_o single_a element_n but_o appear_v as_o if_o there_o be_v nothing_o contrary_a to_o its_o form_n whereby_o it_o become_v very_o apt_a for_o and_o capable_a of_o receive_v life_n and_o by_o how_o much_o the_o great_a this_o equality_n of_o temper_n be_v and_o by_o how_o much_o the_o more_o perfect_a and_o far_o distant_a from_o incline_v to_o any_o one_o extreme_a by_o so_o much_o far_a be_v it_o distant_a from_o have_v any_o contrary_a to_o it_o and_o its_o life_n be_v the_o more_o perfect_a see_v then_o that_o the_o animal_n spirit_n the_o seat_n whereof_o be_v the_o heart_n be_v of_o a_o most_o equal_a temper_v for_o it_o be_v more_o pure_a and_o subtle_a than_o earth_n and_o water_n as_o it_o be_v more_o gross_a and_o thick_a than_o fire_n and_o air_n so_o that_o it_o obtain_v the_o nature_n of_o such_o a_o mean_a as_o be_v contrary_n to_o none_o of_o the_o element_n in_o any_o evident_a kind_n of_o body_n which_o in_o like_a manner_n have_v nothing_o contrary_a unto_o they_o and_o that_o therefore_o it_o become_v the_o spirit_n of_o that_o live_a creature_n which_o have_v the_o most_o perfect_a life_n because_o it_o be_v indeed_o place_v in_o the_o middle_n of_o the_o element_n not_o be_v at_o all_o move_v either_o upward_a or_o downward_o and_o if_o it_o can_v be_v place_v in_o the_o concern_v which_o he_o can_v in_o the_o least_o suspect_n that_o it_o have_v any_o knowledge_n of_o this_o necessary_o existent_a be_v but_o on_o the_o other_o side_n well_o know_v that_o as_o for_o his_o own_o form_n or_o essence_n it_o have_v the_o knowledge_n of_o it_o he_o thence_o conclude_v that_o he_o be_v a_o live_a creature_n endue_v with_o a_o spirit_n of_o a_o equal_a temperature_n like_v unto_o the_o heavenly_a body_n it_o be_v evident_a also_o to_o he_o that_o he_o be_v of_o a_o diverse_a kind_n from_o all_o other_o sort_n of_o animal_n create_v to_o another_o end_n and_o destine_v to_o the_o obtain_n of_o some_o great_a perfection_n and_o happiness_n whereunto_o no_o other_o animal_n be_v appoint_v and_o it_o be_v enough_o to_o show_v the_o nobleness_n of_o his_o nature_n and_o condition_n that_o the_o most_o vile_a part_n of_o he_o viz._n the_o bodily_a one_o be_v most_o like_a of_o all_o to_o the_o heavenly_a substance_n which_o be_v remove_v from_o this_o part_n of_o he_o be_v that_o thing_n whereby_o he_o know_v the_o necessary_o existent_a be_v that_o also_o his_o intelligent_a form_n be_v somewhat_o heroical_a and_o divine_a such_o as_o be_v not_o changeable_a nor_o liable_a unto_o corruption_n such_o as_o nothing_o be_v to_o be_v attribute_v unto_o that_o proper_o belong_v unto_o body_n such_o a_o thing_n last_o as_o can_v not_o be_v apprehend_v by_o any_o of_o the_o sense_n nor_o by_o the_o imagination_n and_o the_o knowledge_n thereof_o can_v not_o be_v obtain_v by_o any_o other_o instrument_n but_o by_o its_o own_o faculty_n which_o have_v a_o faculty_n to_o produce_v other_o of_o the_o like_a kind_n withal_o he_o take_v care_n neither_o to_o pluck_v they_o up_o by_o the_o root_n nor_o to_o destroy_v their_o seed_n but_o in_o case_n these_o also_o be_v want_v than_o he_o think_v fit_a to_o take_v his_o food_n of_o the_o brute_n animal_n or_o of_o their_o egg_n yet_o so_o that_o he_o take_v his_o food_n of_o those_o observe_v those_o rule_n which_o he_o have_v prescribe_v to_o himself_o namely_o those_o which_o we_o even_o now_o set_v down_o after_o this_o he_o apply_v himself_o to_o §_o 74_o the_o second_o operation_n which_o consist_v in_o a_o conformity_n to_o the_o heavenly_a body_n by_o imitate_v and_o resemble_v of_o they_o and_o express_v their_o proper_a quality_n in_o himself_o now_o when_o he_o have_v run_v over_o all_o their_o attribute_n in_o his_o mind_n they_o seem_v unto_o he_o to_o be_v comprehend_v under_o these_o three_o kind_n whereof_o the_o first_o belong_v to_o they_o in_o relation_n to_o the_o inferior_a body_n which_o be_v place_v in_o this_o earthly_a world_n which_o be_v liable_a to_o generation_n and_o corruption_n viz._n such_o as_o heat_v which_o they_o impart_v to_o they_o of_o their_o own_o nature_n as_o cold_a by_o accident_n light_n rarefaction_n and_o condensation_n together_o with_o other_o effect_n which_o they_o work_v in_o they_o whereby_o they_o be_v qualify_v and_o dispose_v for_o the_o receive_n into_o themselves_o the_o influence_n of_o those_o spiritual_a form_n from_o the_o supreme_a cause_n the_o necessary_o existent_a agent_n the_o second_o kind_n of_o attribute_n be_v such_o as_o agree_v to_o they_o in_o regard_n of_o their_o own_o nature_n as_o it_o be_v consider_v in_o itself_o as_o that_o they_o be_v clear_a bright_a and_o lightsome_a body_n pure_a and_o far_o remove_v from_o all_o feculent_a matter_n and_o whatsoever_o kind_n of_o impurity_n also_o that_o they_o be_v move_v circular_o some_o of_o they_o about_o their_o own_o centre_n and_o some_o about_o the_o centre_n of_o other_o planet_n the_o three_o kind_n of_o attribute_n be_v that_o which_o they_o have_v in_o relation_n to_o the_o necessary_o existent_a be_v as_o that_o they_o always_o behold_v he_o nor_o at_o any_o time_n turn_v away_o their_o eye_n from_o he_o that_o they_o be_v also_o employ_v in_o that_o which_o he_o appoint_v they_o to_o do_v and_o perform_v his_o will_n with_o a_o most_o ready_a constant_a and_o exact_a obedience_n neither_o be_v ever_o move_v but_o according_a to_o his_o will_n and_o by_o his_o power_n he_o therefore_o endeavour_v with_o all_o his_o might_n to_o resemble_v and_o imitate_v they_o in_o every_o one_o of_o these_o three_o kind_n as_o to_o the_o first_o kind_n of_o conformity_n §_o 75_o he_o judge_v that_o his_o imitation_n of_o they_o consist_v in_o this_o viz._n that_o he_o be_v so_o dispose_v and_o affect_v as_o to_o see_v no_o brute_n animal_n or_o plant_n which_o want_v any_o thing_n or_o which_o suffer_v any_o hurt_n or_o loss_n or_o be_v molest_v with_o any_o impediment_n which_o he_o be_v able_a to_o remove_v from_o it_o but_o he_o shall_v remove_v it_o and_o that_o when_o he_o chance_v to_o see_v any_o plant_n which_o be_v deprive_v of_o the_o benefit_n of_o the_o sun_n through_o the_o interposal_n of_o another_o body_n or_o whereto_o some_o harmful_a weed_n stick_v close_o or_o be_v dry_a and_o wither_v and_o even_o ready_a to_o die_v he_o shall_v remove_v that_o which_o so_o interpose_v itself_o if_o it_o can_v be_v remove_v and_o separate_v that_o hurtful_a weed_n pursue_v or_o be_v entangle_v in_o a_o snare_n or_o molest_v with_o any_o thorn_n or_o brier_n that_o lay_v hold_v on_o it_o or_o stick_v to_o it_o or_o have_v some_o hurtful_a thing_n fall_v into_o meat_n and_o drink_n also_o when_o he_o see_v any_o water_n which_o convenient_o flow_v for_o afford_v moisture_n to_o any_o plant_n or_o drink_v to_o any_o brute_n animal_n in_o case_n he_o observe_v any_o impediment_n which_o interrupt_v its_o free_a course_n whether_o it_o be_v some_o stone_n which_o chance_v to_o fall_v thereinto_o or_o whatsoever_o other_o thing_n bring_v down_o by_o the_o
