creator_n be_v right_o say_v to_o have_v produce_v or_o create_v his_o creature_n immediate_o because_o there_o be_v no_o medium_n or_o mean_v exist_v save_o only_o his_o word_n and_o spirit_n whereby_o to_o create_v they_o but_o this_o signification_n of_o the_o word_n or_o term_n immediate_n be_v too_o straight_o and_o narrow_a and_o perhaps_o agree_v to_o no_o other_o operation_n than_o to_o the_o creation_n and_o conservation_n of_o the_o world_n by_o god_n that_o infinite_a and_o supreme_a cause_n unless_o we_o add_v those_o divine_a miracle_n and_o other_o marvellous_a thing_n the_o immediate_a communication_n of_o the_o spirit_n then_o as_o seem_v unto_o i_o the_o adversary_n wonderful_o forget_v himself_o within_o a_o few_o line_n he_o confess_v that_o david_n be_v immediate_o enlighten_v by_o god_n and_o gift_v with_o the_o spirit_n of_o prophecy_n lo_o how_o he_o have_v mortal_o wound_v and_o kill_v his_o own_o cause_n as_o it_o be_v with_o his_o own_o hand_n inspire_v how_o can_v he_o convince_v he_o of_o his_o error_n for_o whatever_o place_n of_o scripture_n he_o shall_v bring_v to_o convince_v he_o he_o shall_v be_v ready_a to_o answer_v with_o this_o our_o adversary_n that_o all_o these_o place_n of_o scripture_n say_v nothing_o of_o the_o holy_a spirit_n his_o be_v immediate_o give_v to_o any_o either_o of_o the_o prophet_n or_o apostle_n but_o if_o he_o answer_v that_o the_o scripture-word_n which_o say_v that_o the_o prophet_n and_o apostle_n have_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n inward_o teach_v enlighten_v lead_v move_a and_o act_v they_o although_o they_o do_v not_o express_v the_o term_n immediate_a yet_o they_o do_v sufficient_o signify_v and_o import_v the_o immediate_a communication_n of_o the_o holy_a spirit_n therefore_o it_o shall_v be_v equal_o lawful_a unto_o we_o to_o conclude_v because_o all_o the_o faithful_a and_o true_a child_n of_o god_n be_v say_v in_o scripture_n to_o have_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n which_o dwell_v in_o they_o do_v inward_o teach_v they_o inspire_v enlighten_v lead_v move_z and_o act_v they_o and_o that_o it_o be_v one_o spirit_n which_o be_v in_o all_o the_o faithful_a whether_o they_o all_o prophet_n or_o apostle_n for_o although_o the_o communication_n of_o the_o spirit_n be_v immediate_a unto_o all_o yet_o it_o do_v not_o produce_v in_o all_o the_o same_o gift_n and_o function_n proof_n and_o play_v on_o the_o ambiguous_a or_o various_a signification_n of_o the_o word_n or_o term_v immediate_a and_o mediate_a which_o i_o have_v above_o explain_v and_o so_o he_o depart_v and_o go_v aside_o from_o the_o true_a state_n of_o the_o controversy_n altogether_o for_o although_o it_o be_v grant_v that_o many_o receive_v the_o holy_a spirit_n by_o mean_n of_o the_o outward_a preach_n that_o do_v not_o hinder_v but_o that_o they_o have_v it_o immediate_o and_o most_o near_o communicate_v unto_o they_o of_o god_n for_o beside_o other_o reason_n and_o example_n former_o bring_v by_o i_o cap._n 4._o the_o follow_a example_n shall_v demonstrate_v the_o thing_n abundant_o we_o see_v by_o how_o many_o various_a mean_n a_o husbandman_n or_o gardiner_n do_v ingraft_v a_o twig_n or_o branch_n upon_o the_o stock_n of_o a_o tree_n the_o use_n of_o which_o mean_v notwithstanding_o do_v not_o hinder_v but_o on_o the_o contrary_n do_v great_o conduce_v and_o further_o or_o it_o do_v the_o elder_a prophet_n hence_o it_o be_v that_o we_o read_v of_o the_o school_n of_o the_o prophet_n and_o of_o their_o son_n and_o disciple_n in_o the_o scripture_n and_o do_v not_o elisha_n the_o disciple_n of_o elijah_n by_o mean_n of_o his_o master_n immediate_o receive_v the_o holy_a spirit_n and_o the_o apostle_n also_o receive_v the_o holy_a spirit_n in_o some_o degree_n immediate_o before_o the_o day_n of_o pentecost_n by_o mean_n of_o christ_n preach_v outward_o unto_o they_o nor_o can_v it_o be_v question_v but_o that_o when_o they_o receive_v the_o same_o spirit_n more_o abundant_o on_o the_o day_n of_o pentecost_n they_o be_v much_o help_v and_o assisted_z or_o prepare_v for_o such_o a_o excellent_a dispensation_n by_o mean_n of_o christ_n doctrine_n which_o he_o preach_v unto_o they_o while_o he_o be_v yet_o conversant_a with_o they_o in_o the_o flesh_n upon_o earth_n and_o the_o faithful_a do_v common_o receive_v the_o holy_a spirit_n and_o many_o excellent_a gift_n of_o it_o immediate_o and_o yet_o by_o mean_n of_o the_o apostle_n preach_v and_o lay_v on_o of_o their_o hand_n i_o speak_v before_o of_o cornelius_n who_o receive_v the_o spirit_n immediate_o and_o yet_o obtain_v it_o further_o by_o mean_n of_o peter_n preach_v timothy_n also_o receive_v that_o excellent_a gift_n which_o be_v in_o he_o by_o prophecy_n with_o the_o lay_n on_o of_o the_o hand_n of_o the_o eldership_n if_o therefore_o it_o be_v say_v that_o some_o of_o the_o faithful_a receive_v the_o spirit_n immediate_o and_o other_o only_o
miracle_n nor_o do_v we_o read_v that_o he_o speak_v any_o tongue_n but_o that_o which_o be_v common_a to_o the_o jew_n and_o it_o be_v yet_o more_o unreasonable_a and_o unequal_a not_o to_o believe_v we_o unless_o we_o have_v all_o the_o miraculous_a gift_n of_o the_o spirit_n as_o if_o some_o be_v not_o sufficient_a if_o so_o we_o have_v they_o sure_o few_o church_n or_o person_n have_v all_o the_o miraculous_a gift_n of_o the_o spirit_n even_o when_o they_o be_v most_o common_a and_o though_o we_o pretend_v not_o to_o those_o miraculous_a gift_n of_o the_o spirit_n such_o as_o speak_v with_o tongue_n heal_v the_o sick_a raise_v the_o dead_a etc._n etc._n yet_o the_o absence_n or_o not_o have_v any_o of_o these_o miraculous_a gift_n can_v prove_v that_o we_o be_v not_o otherwise_o divine_o inspire_v for_o there_o be_v common_a divine_a inspiration_n necessary_a to_o all_o true_a christian_n which_o be_v of_o a_o save_a nature_n where_o they_o be_v receive_v in_o faith_n and_o love_n who_o peculiar_a and_o proper_a quality_n be_v to_o sanctify_v those_o who_o be_v inspire_v with_o they_o and_o consequent_o be_v of_o a_o moral_a nature_n the_o which_o sort_n of_o divine_a inspiration_n be_v of_o a_o different_a kind_n from_o these_o which_o be_v miraculous_a that_o be_v easy_a to_o understand_v how_o the_o miraculous_a and_o peculiar_a sort_n of_o inspiration_n cease_v those_o other_o of_o a_o moral_a consideration_n do_v remain_v the_o which_o though_o outward_o they_o be_v not_o miraculous_a yet_o inward_o they_o be_v as_o perform_v the_o great_a miracle_n for_o to_o raise_v the_o soul_n from_o death_n to_o life_n and_o to_o heal_v the_o disease_n of_o the_o soul_n be_v a_o great_a miracle_n than_o to_o raise_v or_o heal_v the_o body_n a_o three_o condition_n he_o require_v of_o we_o before_o we_o can_v be_v believe_v to_o have_v the_o spirit_n be_v that_o we_o receive_v what_o the_o apostle_n have_v write_v in_o particular_a that_o a_o woman_n shall_v not_o speak_v in_o the_o church_n as_o the_o commandment_n of_o god_n to_o this_o i_o answer_v that_o we_o do_v receive_v what_o the_o apostle_n have_v write_v as_o the_o commandment_n of_o god_n when_o it_o do_v appear_v that_o what_o he_o write_v be_v such_o cor._n but_o some_o thing_n he_o say_v he_o write_v by_o permission_n and_o not_o by_o commandment_n and_o as_o concern_v woman_n speak_v in_o the_o church_n he_o do_v not_o deliver_v it_o as_o a_o universal_a commandment_n that_o do_v admit_v no_o restriction_n or_o limitation_n otherwise_o he_o have_v contradict_v his_o own_o word_n elsewhere_o in_o prescribe_v a_o order_n to_o woman_n that_o their_o head_n be_v cover_v when_o they_o do_v pray_v or_o prophesy_v which_o to_o be_v sure_o be_v in_o the_o church_n for_o as_o to_o private_a or_o mental_a prayer_n no_o such_o order_n be_v require_v 1_o cor._n 11.5_o and_o whereas_o paul_n say_v i_o permit_v not_o a_o woman_n to_o speak_v in_o the_o church_n it_o be_v easy_a to_o be_v understand_v in_o what_o case_n that_o be_v viz._n to_o dispute_v or_o ask_v question_n in_o the_o church_n which_o be_v permit_v unto_o man_n and_o child_n both_o among_o the_o jew_n and_o primitive_a christian_n but_o not_o unto_o woman_n yet_o do_v not_o this_o restrain_v woman_n to_o speak_v either_o in_o prayer_n or_o prophecy_n when_o they_o be_v divine_o inspire_v so_o to_o do_v for_o both_o the_o scripture_n and_o church-history_n inform_v we_o how_o woman_n do_v prophesy_v and_o pray_v in_o the_o church_n but_o this_o be_v a_o digression_n which_o the_o author_n introduce_v to_o little_a purpose_n here_o i_o shall_v not_o insist_v on_o it_o chap._n iii_o and_o now_o as_o to_o his_o argument_n or_o rather_o one_o bare_a argument_n to_o prove_v that_o divine_a inspiration_n which_o he_o call_v enthusiasm_n be_v cease_v in_o the_o true_a church_n and_o among_o true_a christian_n i_o shall_v first_o produce_v what_o he_o say_v in_o his_o own_o word_n pag._n 21_o 22._o which_o be_v the_o sum_n of_o all_o he_o have_v say_v in_o his_o whole_a sermon_n now_o this_o reason_n say_v he_o be_v to_o be_v take_v from_o the_o want_n and_o necessity_n of_o the_o to_o the_o church_n in_o the_o apostle_n day_n and_o for_o some_o time_n after_o and_o why_o they_o be_v cease_v since_o as_o be_v necessary_a to_o the_o church_n of_o former_a time_n but_o not_o to_o the_o church_n of_o the_o late_a now_o the_o whole_a force_n of_o all_o this_o argument_n if_o all_o be_v concede_v which_o he_o lay_v down_o in_o the_o premise_n do_v not_o conclude_v as_o concern_v the_o miraculous_a kind_n of_o divine_a inspiration_n wherewith_o they_o who_o be_v so_o miraculous_o inspire_v do_v speak_v with_o strange_a tongue_n cure_v disease_n and_o the_o like_a but_o nothing_o of_o all_o this_o author_n reason_n do_v conclude_v against_o the_o other_o sort_n of_o divine_a inspiration_n which_o be_v not_o for_o work_v any_o outward_a miracle_n but_o be_v of_o a_o moral_a nature_n who_o direct_a tendency_n and_o service_n be_v to_o beget_v the_o true_a knowledge_n faith_n and_o love_n of_o god_n and_o other_o evangelical_n virtue_n in_o the_o heart_n and_o soul_n of_o the_o ispire_v and_o also_o to_o preserve_v and_o nourish_v they_o in_o order_n to_o a_o perfect_a growth_n and_o that_o there_o be_v such_o inspiration_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n which_o be_v of_o a_o moral_a nature_n be_v clear_a not_o only_o from_o the_o scripture-testimony_n in_o abundant_a place_n but_o also_o from_o the_o common_a prayer_n of_o the_o church_n of_o england_n already_o cite_v and_o see_v the_o author_n himself_o grant_v the_o necessity_n of_o save_a gift_n and_o operation_n of_o the_o spirit_n in_o all_o true_a believer_n how_o can_v these_o operation_n of_o the_o spirit_n be_v understand_v without_o inspiration_n for_o how_o can_v the_o spirit_n be_v suppose_v to_o operate_v or_o work_v any_o divine_a effect_n in_o the_o soul_n of_o believer_n but_o as_o he_o inspire_v they_o with_o his_o light_n and_o life_n and_o other_o divine_a virtue_n to_o inspire_v signify_v nothing_o else_o but_o to_o in-breath_n or_o to_o breath_n into_o the_o soul_n any_o divine_a virtue_n whatsoever_o and_o therefore_o that_o operation_n or_o motion_n of_o the_o divine_a spirit_n whereby_o he_o quicken_v the_o soul_n that_o once_o be_v dead_a and_o make_v it_o alive_a unto_o god_n be_v very_o proper_o call_v inspiration_n or_o in-breathing_a yea_o from_o this_o sort_n of_o operation_n it_o be_v that_o the_o spirit_n have_v its_o name_n whether_o in_o latin_a greek_a or_o hebrew_n and_o signify_v a_o breathe_v so_o that_o spiration_n or_o inspiration_n may_v well_o deserve_v to_o be_v the_o common_a and_o general_a name_n of_o all_o the_o various_a kind_n of_o the_o spirit_n operation_n in_o the_o soul_n of_o man_n and_o especial_o in_o believer_n according_a to_o the_o word_n of_o christ_n john_n 3.8_o the_o spirit_n breathe_v or_o inspire_v where_o he_o will_v for_o so_o the_o word_n may_v be_v translate_v and_o so_o do_v the_o father_n so_o call_v general_o understand_v they_o and_o we_o know_v that_o the_o occasion_n of_o christ_n speak_v these_o word_n be_v his_o discourse_n with_o nicodemus_n about_o the_o regeneration_n or_o spiritual_a new_a birth_n as_o intimate_v plain_o unto_o we_o that_o the_o spirit_n inspiration_n or_o in_o breathe_v into_o the_o soul_n be_v necessary_a unto_o its_o regeneration_n this_o be_v that_o breath_n or_o breathe_n of_o the_o spirit_n which_o ezekiel_n see_v come_v upon_o not_o make_v thy_o prayer_n more_o excellent_a in_o themselves_o or_o more_o acceptable_a in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n these_o be_v such_o gross_a assertion_n that_o as_o seem_v to_o i_o to_o have_v and_o esteem_v of_o david_n prayer_n and_o psalm_n and_o the_o prayer_n and_o psalm_n of_o other_o saint_n record_v in_o scripture_n as_o be_v divine_o inspire_v do_v they_o not_o favour_n of_o that_o sweet_a and_o precious_a life_n and_o spirit_n which_o inspire_v they_o or_o have_v the_o make_v and_o conceive_v prayer_n of_o other_o without_o all_o divine_a inspiration_n the_o same_o excellency_n and_o worth_n with_o david_n inspire_a prayer_n and_o psalm_n this_o be_v to_o equal_v the_o word_n and_o write_n of_o man_n no_o wise_a inspire_v with_o the_o scripture_n a_o crime_n which_o our_o of_o the_o spirit_n than_o all_o these_o pompous_a miraculous_a gift_n in_o which_o there_o be_v no_o intrinsical_a excellency_n but_o i_o say_v the_o author_n still_o beg_v the_o great_a thing_n in_o controversy_n viz._n that_o there_o be_v any_o save_a grace_n of_o the_o spirit_n without_o inspiration_n which_o we_o altogether_o deny_v for_o we_o affirm_v that_o save_a faith_n hope_n and_o love_n and_o all_o other_o evangelical_n virtue_n be_v wrought_v in_o believer_n by_o the_o spirit_n inspiration_n nor_o can_v we_o reach_v the_o author_n subtlety_n to_o distinguish_v the_o inward_a save_a operation_n of_o the_o spirit_n from_o inspiration_n as_o if_o they_o be_v distinct_a thing_n for_o suppose_v all_o sort_n of_o inspiration_n be_v not_o save_v or_o necessary_a to_o salvation_n it_o do_v not_o follow_v that_o none_o be_v necessary_a in_o that_o respect_n and_o although_o all_o inspiration_n be_v not_o save_v grace_n yet_o all_o save_a grace_n be_v inspiration_n even_o as_o though_o all_o animal_n be_v not_o man_n yet_o all_o man_n be_v animal_n or_o let_v the_o author_n if_o he_o can_v clear_o distinguish_v betwixt_o these_o two_o and_o prove_v they_o to_o be_v so_o distinct_a from_o some_o better_a authority_n than_o his_o bare_a affirmation_n viz._n that_o no_o save_a grace_n be_v any_o divine_a inspiration_n but_o of_o a_o differ_a nature_n therefrom_o the_o which_o if_o it_o be_v true_a than_o none_o of_o all_o the_o saint_n have_v any_o save_a grace_n inspire_v into_o they_o in_o any_o age_n of_o the_o world_n which_o i_o judge_v be_v contrary_a to_o the_o belief_n of_o most_o christian_n who_o general_o believe_v that_o the_o prophet_n at_o least_o have_v the_o save_a grace_n of_o the_o spirit_n inspire_v into_o they_o to_o conclude_v this_o author_n whole_a discourse_n tend_v only_o at_o most_o to_o prove_v if_o all_o his_o premise_n be_v grant_v that_o the_o miraculous_a gift_n of_o the_o spirit_n be_v not_o necessary_a to_o salvation_n be_v it_o that_o say_v he_o have_v the_o gift_n of_o tongue_n or_o other_o miraculous_a gift_n of_o that_o sort_n i_o know_v not_o any_o or_o who_o plead_v for_o the_o absolute_a necessity_n of_o they_o but_o as_o we_o do_v not_o plead_v for_o such_o gift_n so_o we_o can_v be_v so_o peremptory_a to_o conclude_v that_o all_o these_o miraculous_a gift_n have_v universal_o cease_v or_o expire_v since_o the_o primitive_a time_n or_o that_o none_o of_o they_o at_o any_o time_n hereafter_o shall_v again_o appear_v and_o i_o judge_v divers_a of_o his_o premise_n on_o which_o he_o build_v his_o conclusion_n of_o the_o universal_a expiration_n of_o those_o miraculous_a gift_n be_v defective_a and_o none_o of_o they_o sufficient_a to_o demonstrate_v his_o assertion_n it_o will_v require_v and_o 1_o cor._n 13._o from_o v_o 8._o to_o the_o end_n but_o sure_o these_o two_o scripture_n seem_v to_o i_o to_o be_v very_o impertinent_o bring_v to_o confirm_v his_o assertion_n and_o his_o application_n of_o they_o i_o believe_v be_v contrary_a to_o the_o mind_n of_o most_o teacher_n and_o first_o that_o he_o suppose_v all_o these_o gift_n which_o god_n give_v to_o the_o church_n at_o christ_n ascension_n to_o have_v be_v the_o miraculous_a and_o extraordinary_a gift_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o not_o one_o of_o they_o the_o ordinary_a and_o save_a gift_n of_o the_o spirit_n but_o why_o be_v not_o the_o save_a gift_n of_o the_o spirit_n common_a to_o all_o true_a christian_n as_o real_o the_o fruit_n and_o effect_n of_o christ_n death_n resurrection_n and_o ascension_n as_o those_o miraculous_a and_o extraordinary_a sure_o this_o be_v a_o very_a unnatural_a separation_n and_o seem_v very_o injurious_a unto_o the_o purchase_n of_o christ_n as_o if_o all_o the_o save_a
