man_n cover_v and_o compass_v it_o round_o about_o with_o the_o mighty_a power_n of_o god_n al_n those_o vain_a yea_o those_o most_o wicked_a mean_n by_o which_o man_n seek_v to_o repel_v satan_n be_v to_o be_v renounce_v as_o mere_a illusion_n man_n be_v to_o be_v teach_v of_o god_n and_o not_o to_o learn_v of_o divelles_n but_o divelle_n have_v devise_v those_o mean_n and_o by_o such_o as_o have_v familiarity_n with_o they_o have_v deliver_v the_o same_o to_o be_v put_v in_o practice_n as_o there_o be_v such_o devise_n among_o the_o sorcerer_n which_o satan_n have_v crafty_o convey_v in_o so_o also_o in_o the_o popery_n they_o do_v not_o seek_v as_o saint_n peter_n will_v to_o resist_v he_o by_o faith_n but_o invent_v other_o way_n thus_o far_o we_o proceed_v in_o handle_v this_o scripture_n and_o now_o it_o remain_v as_o a_o principal_a question_n to_o be_v handle_v whether_o this_o faith_n by_o which_o the_o devil_n be_v to_o be_v resist_v can_v be_v overcome_v in_o any_o that_o be_v to_o speak_v more_o plain_o whether_o any_o man_n that_o have_v the_o true_a and_o livelie_a faith_n by_o which_o the_o devil_n be_v resist_v can_v utter_o loose_v it_o and_o fall_v from_o god_n final_o whether_o his_o faith_n may_v utter_o fail_v and_o be_v vanquish_v &_o so_o have_v resist_v satan_n for_o a_o time_n steadfast_a in_o the_o faith_n yet_o in_o the_o end_n he_o may_v be_v overcome_v and_o devour_v by_o he_o touch_v this_o question_n the_o papist_n do_v hold_v that_o a_o man_n may_v have_v the_o true_a and_o lively_a faith_n and_o so_o fall_v from_o it_o as_o that_o it_o be_v utter_o &_o whole_o quench_v in_o he_o yea_o final_o and_o so_o by_o their_o doctrine_n such_o as_o do_v stand_v in_o this_o faith_n which_o saint_n peter_n require_v and_o with_o the_o same_o do_v resist_v the_o devil_n may_v by_o the_o devil_n have_v that_o same_o their_o sound_n and_o true_a faith_n overcome_v and_o so_o perish_v eternal_o other_o there_o be_v who_o will_v seem_v to_o differ_v somewhat_o from_o the_o popish_a sort_n about_o this_o matter_n and_o they_o do_v hold_v that_o the_o very_a reprobate_n some_o of_o they_o at_o the_o least_o be_v partaker_n for_o a_o time_n of_o the_o true_a livelie_a and_o justify_v faith_n which_o be_v afterward_o whole_o and_o final_o extinguish_v in_o they_o moreover_o they_o do_v hold_v that_o the_o same_o true_a and_o lively_a faith_n may_v be_v whole_o extinguish_v in_o the_o elect_a but_o not_o final_o because_o it_o be_v unpossible_a that_o the_o elect_v shall_v perish_v and_o therein_o they_o differ_v indeed_o from_o the_o papist_n which_o make_v election_n conditional_a if_o this_o doctrine_n of_o they_o be_v true_a then_o be_v there_o no_o man_n that_o can_v be_v certain_a of_o his_o salvation_n there_o be_v no_o man_n that_o be_v sure_a he_o shall_v stand_v to_o the_o end_n no_o man_n can_v resist_v steadfast_a in_o the_o faith_n for_o he_o that_o to_o day_n do_v get_v the_o victory_n over_o the_o devil_n by_o a_o true_a and_o lively_a faith_n to_o morrow_n may_v utter_o loose_v his_o faith_n and_o be_v overcome_v by_o the_o devil_n if_o it_o be_v so_o then_o have_v not_o saint_n peter_n here_o teach_v how_o we_o shall_v have_v undoubted_a victory_n if_o he_o will_v we_o to_o resist_v by_o such_o a_o weapon_n as_o may_v be_v break_v or_o destroy_v or_o pluck_v away_o from_o we_o we_o be_v then_o but_o in_o a_o very_a weak_a case_n it_o may_v be_v they_o will_v say_v there_o be_v undoubted_a victory_n so_o long_o as_o a_o man_n do_v resist_v steadfast_a in_o the_o faith_n and_o that_o saint_n peter_n have_v no_o further_a intent_n that_o be_v the_o thing_n which_o we_o be_v to_o inquire_v of_o and_o this_o shall_v be_v make_v manifest_a that_o whosoever_o have_v the_o true_a and_o lively_a faith_n shall_v undoubted_o get_v the_o victory_n over_o satan_n that_o it_o be_v unpossible_a that_o his_o faith_n shall_v be_v whole_o extinguish_v it_o be_v unpossible_a that_o he_o shall_v perish_v this_o be_v it_o which_o we_o affirm_v that_o whosoever_o do_v attain_v unto_o a_o steadfast_a faith_n which_o be_v the_o thing_n which_o saint_n peter_n here_o require_v that_o faith_n can_v never_o be_v overcome_v for_o if_o it_o be_v overcome_v it_o be_v not_o steadfast_a it_o be_v the_o purpose_n of_o saint_n peter_n not_o to_o teach_v that_o so_o long_o as_o a_o man_n be_v steadfast_a in_o the_o faith_n so_o long_o he_o shall_v resist_v the_o devil_n and_o get_v the_o victory_n take_v this_o so_o long_o as_o if_o it_o be_v uncertain_a that_o he_o which_o be_v once_o steadfast_a shall_v continue_v to_o the_o end_n but_o this_o be_v his_o full_a meaning_n that_o so_o many_o as_o attain_v to_o be_v steadfast_a in_o the_o faith_n shall_v undoubted_o vanquish_v satan_n and_o never_o be_v vanquish_v by_o he_o hitherto_o then_o tend_v his_o doctrine_n even_o to_o show_v that_o as_o we_o be_v compass_v about_o and_o beset_v with_o devil_n who_o like_v most_o greedy_a devour_a lion_n do_v seek_v continual_o for_o to_o swallow_v we_o up_o so_o if_o we_o seek_v so_o far_o as_o to_o be_v arm_v with_o a_o steadfast_a faith_n we_o attain_v to_o that_o estate_n out_o of_o which_o we_o can_v never_o be_v cast_v it_o be_v as_o much_o as_o if_o he_o shall_v say_v the_o devil_n can_v never_o overcome_v a_o steadfast_a faith_n obtain_v that_o and_o you_o be_v sure_a to_o stand_v to_o the_o end_n belove_a we_o be_v not_o then_o to_o labour_v only_o for_o faith_n but_o if_o we_o will_v be_v sure_a to_o overcome_v the_o devil_n and_o to_o stand_v to_o the_o end_n we_o must_v labour_v to_o obtain_v a_o steadfast_a faith_n but_o how_o can_v we_o be_v sure_a that_o this_o be_v the_o mind_n of_o the_o apostle_n to_o warrant_v man_n that_o they_o shall_v get_v the_o victory_n over_o the_o devil_n even_o to_o the_o end_n if_o they_o attain_v unto_o a_o steadfast_a faith_n i_o answer_v that_o he_o agree_v with_o himself_o teach_v here_o the_o same_o thing_n which_o he_o exhort_v unto_o in_o the_o first_o chapte_v rof_o his_o second_o epistle_n hereunto_o say_v he_o give_v all_o diligence_n in_o your_o faith_n minister_v virtue_n in_o virtue_n knowledge_n in_o knowledge_n temperance_n in_o temperance_n patience_n in_o patience_n godliness_n in_o godliness_n brotherlie_a kindness_n in_o brother_n lie_v kindness_n love_n for_o if_o these_o thing_n be_v among_o you_o and_o abound_v they_o will_v make_v that_o you_o neither_o shall_v be_v idle_a nor_o unfruitful_a in_o the_o knowledge_v of_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n for_o he_o that_o have_v not_o these_o thing_n be_v blind_a and_o can_v see_v a_o far_o off_o and_o have_v forget_v that_o he_o be_v purge_v from_o his_o old_a sin_n wherefore_o brethren_n give_v rather_o diligence_n to_o make_v your_o call_n &_o election_n sure_a for_o if_o you_o do_v these_o thing_n you_o shall_v never_o fall_v for_o by_o this_o mean_v a_o enter_v shall_v be_v minister_v unto_o you_o abundant_o holy_a apostle_n say_v if_o you_o do_v these_o thing_n you_o shall_v never_o fall_v do_v not_o they_o fall_v which_o loose_a the_o faith_n or_o in_o who_o it_o be_v whole_o quench_v christ_n reign_v in_o all_o those_o which_o have_v the_o lively_a faith_n and_o if_o his_o kingdom_n may_v be_v break_v down_o again_o where_o it_o once_o take_v place_n how_o can_v it_o be_v say_v in_o every_o respect_n to_o be_v eternal_a now_o to_o join_v these_o two_o place_n together_o that_o man_n have_v the_o steadfast_a faith_n whereby_o he_o do_v resist_v the_o devil_n
well_o therefore_o i_o think_v good_a not_o to_o disquiet_v they_o here_o be_v now_o wonder_a patience_n these_o be_v very_o godly_a and_o charitable_a person_n yea_o even_o a_o treachery_n towards_o god_n and_o man_n for_o be_v there_o any_o of_o they_o which_o be_v slander_v with_o some_o foul_a crime_n whereby_o they_o shall_v receive_v great_a injury_n or_o be_v spiteful_o rail_v upon_o if_o some_o of_o their_o near_a friend_n sit_v by_o and_o hold_v their_o tougue_n when_o they_o know_v they_o be_v injury_v that_o can_v by_o and_o by_o feel_v &_o say_v this_o be_v cold_a friendship_n that_o they_o can_v not_o have_v deal_v so_o unlovinglie_o towards_o their_o friend_n by_o whomsoeever_n they_o shall_v have_v hear_v they_o so_o abuse_v they_o can_v not_o have_v hold_v their_o tongue_n then_o belike_o god_n nor_o his_o truth_n be_v none_o of_o their_o dear_a friend_n that_o they_o can_v put_v up_o such_o injury_n do_v towards_o he_o there_o be_v plenty_n of_o this_o patience_n in_o all_o place_n but_o godliness_n can_v be_v suffer_v to_o come_v near_o for_o he_o be_v a_o break_v peace_n and_o a_o very_a unpleasant_a fellow_n he_o be_v over_o rough_a and_o precise_a and_o over_o captious_a there_o be_v good_a neighbourhood_n and_o friendship_n before_o he_o come_v they_o can_v be_v merry_a together_o and_o be_v in_o unity_n without_o any_o jar_n have_v it_o not_o be_v better_a to_o use_v gentleness_n and_o patience_n then_o to_o have_v this_o broil_n for_o there_o be_v nothing_o better_a than_o love_n &_o where_o that_o be_v not_o there_o be_v nothing_o good_a o_o miserable_a day_n this_o be_v the_o good_a love_n now_o among_o man_n that_o they_o can_v love_v one_o another_o but_o they_o must_v hate_v god_n to_o have_v peace_n and_o concord_n with_o man_n to_o be_v at_o odds_n with_o god_n for_o man_n sake_n to_o put_v up_o the_o dishonour_v of_o his_o name_n not_o to_o continue_v in_o patience_n unless_o godliness_n be_v want_v the_o ungodlie_a world_n and_o lewd_a nature_n that_o be_v in_o man_n take_v occasion_n to_o accuse_v godly_a zeal_n under_o this_o pretence_n and_o to_o find_v fault_n with_o the_o preach_n of_o the_o word_n because_o say_v they_o it_o set_v man_n at_o strife_n but_o we_o must_v learn_v in_o this_o place_n to_o join_v godliness_n with_o our_o patience_n for_o otherwise_o we_o shall_v be_v find_v to_o be_v nothing_o else_o but_o irreligious_a and_o profane_a dog_n although_o we_o pretend_v love_n never_o so_o much_o the_o time_n will_v not_o suffer_v to_o handle_v the_o rest_n which_o remain_v in_o this_o text._n let_v we_o rememeber_v that_o which_o have_v be_v say_v and_o give_v all_o diligence_n to_o pursue_v these_o excellent_a virtue_n that_o so_o we_o may_v approve_v ourselves_o to_o be_v right_a christian_n and_o look_v for_o the_o bless_a hope_n promise_v in_o jesu_n christ_n the_o three_o sermon_n 7_o and_o with_o godliness_n brotherlie_a kindness_n and_o with_o brotherlie_a kindness_n love_n 8_o for_o if_o these_o thing_n be_v with_o you_o and_o abound_v they_o will_v make_v you_o that_o you_o shall_v not_o be_v idle_a nor_o unfruitful_a in_o the_o knowledge_n of_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n 9_o for_o he_o that_o have_v not_o these_o thing_n be_v blind_a and_o see_v not_o a_o far_o off_o and_o have_v forget_v that_o he_o be_v purge_v from_o his_o old_a sin_n and_o with_o godliness_n brotherlie_a kindness_n etc._n etc._n we_o have_v hear_v already_o that_o with_o our_o faith_n must_v be_v join_v virtue_n or_o godly_a deed_n which_o it_o can_v be_v without_o if_o it_o be_v a_o true_a faith_n with_o virtue_n we_o be_v command_v to_o join_v knowledge_n which_o may_v be_v a_o guide_n thereunto_o our_o knowledge_n must_v go_v with_o temperance_n with_o this_o must_v come_v patience_n and_o thereunto_o must_v be_v join_v godliness_n there_o remain_v yet_o two_o branch_n of_o these_o special_a virtue_n about_o which_o we_o be_v to_o travel_v the_o first_o of_o these_o be_v brotherlie_a love_n or_o kindness_n which_o must_v be_v yoke_v with_o godliness_n as_o i_o say_v that_o this_o godliness_n he_o speak_v of_o be_v refer_v to_o the_o first_o table_n of_o the_o law_n respect_v god_n and_o his_o religion_n that_o we_o be_v sound_a and_o zealous_a in_o the_o same_o and_o not_o as_o those_o which_o be_v for_o all_o all_o time_n and_o all_o religion_n and_o therefore_o care_v not_o what_o be_v say_v against_o religion_n be_v very_a bellie-god_n and_o atheist_n so_o this_o be_v refer_v to_o the_o second_o table_n show_v what_o we_o owe_v unto_o man_n this_o be_v very_o fit_o and_o necessary_o add_v for_o as_o there_o be_v many_o which_o regard_v man_n only_o how_o to_o please_v and_o not_o to_o grieve_v or_o offend_v they_o altogether_o forget_v their_o duty_n towards_o the_o lord_n god_n and_o whole_o shut_v he_o out_o as_o though_o their_o chief_a care_n shall_v be_v of_o man_n let_v pass_v godliness_n so_o there_o be_v some_o that_o offend_v on_o the_o other_o side_n which_o look_v always_o so_o high_a as_o to_o have_v respect_n to_o the_o lord_n and_o his_o truth_n to_o be_v earnest_a and_o fiery_a in_o that_o overlook_v man_n forget_v the_o duty_n which_o they_o owe_v unto_o they_o the_o holy_a apostle_n meet_v with_o this_o mischief_n and_o tell_v we_o that_o we_o must_v so_o love_n god_n that_o we_o also_o love_v man_n join_v say_v he_o to_o your_o godliness_n brotherly_a kindness_n for_o unless_o this_o be_v join_v and_o go_v with_o our_o zeal_n of_o god_n word_n it_o be_v no_o true_a godliness_n although_o we_o be_v never_o so_o sound_a in_o judgement_n and_o seem_v to_o be_v as_o hot_a as_o moses_n or_o elias_n yea_o even_o to_o be_v swallow_v up_o with_o burn_a zeal_n for_o it_o do_v not_o proceed_v from_o god_n spirit_n who_o do_v also_o work_v the_o love_n towards_o man_n whersoever_o he_o go_v but_o it_o do_v proceed_v of_o some_o corrupt_a cause_n as_o of_o vain_a glory_n or_o self-love_n and_o such_o like_a and_o deserve_v not_o indeed_o to_o be_v call_v godly_a devotion_n no_o more_o than_o the_o true_a faith_n can_v be_v without_o virtue_n or_o deserve_v to_o be_v call_v aught_o save_o a_o shadow_n or_o image_n of_o faith_n if_o it_o be_v without_o good_a work_n but_o it_o be_v a_o bitterness_n which_o resemble_v the_o true_a zeal_n which_o do_v evermore_o carry_v with_o it_o a_o love_n and_o care_n towards_o man_n true_a it_o be_v that_o to_o be_v zealous_a in_o spirit_n be_v a_o singular_a and_o special_a gift_n of_o god_n &_o they_o which_o be_v without_o it_o be_v but_o brutish_a and_o senseless_a creature_n not_o know_v god_n nor_o how_o precious_a his_o glory_n be_v yet_o this_o must_v be_v look_v unto_o in_o every_o one_o of_o we_o whether_o we_o bear_v a_o love_a affection_n towards_o our_o brethren_n or_o no_o for_o if_o we_o love_v god_n we_o must_v needs_o love_v man_n which_o bear_v his_o image_n if_o we_o delight_v in_o the_o word_n of_o god_n this_o be_v one_o chief_a point_n of_o doctrine_n that_o be_v teach_v in_o it_o that_o we_o be_v love_v &_o kind_a unto_o man_n therefore_o as_o s._n paul_n 1_o cor._n 13._o show_v that_o very_o excellent_a gift_n do_v not_o profit_v without_o love_n so_o likewise_o in_o this_o place_n we_o be_v teach_v that_o if_o we_o will_v seem_v to_o be_v godly_a and_o have_v not_o love_n it_o be_v nothing_o worth_a let_v every_o man_n therefore_o lay_v this_o doctrine_n to_o his_o heart_n that_o he_o must_v be_v earnest_a in_o the_o cause_n of_o the_o lord_n then_o do_v we_o stand_v steadfast_a arm_v with_o the_o power_n of_o god_n this_o faith_n may_v be_v try_v and_o seem_v oftentimes_o to_o be_v sore_o shake_v but_o it_o can_v never_o be_v overcome_v yea_o will_v some_o man_n say_v but_o every_o man_n can_v come_v to_o know_v that_o he_o have_v receive_v the_o true_a and_o lively_a faith_n or_o the_o spirit_n of_o adoption_n we_o see_v many_o go_v far_o in_o the_o profession_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o think_v that_o they_o have_v the_o true_a faith_n and_o the_o sanctify_a spirit_n which_o yet_o fall_v quite_o away_o it_o be_v true_a that_o there_o be_v many_o which_o embrace_v the_o gospel_n and_o profess_v it_o with_o such_o feel_n that_o they_o suppose_v god_n have_v call_v they_o as_o his_o child_n there_o be_v for_o the_o time_n such_o a_o touch_n &_o such_o a_o move_n in_o their_o heart_n and_o yet_o in_o time_n they_o manifest_v themselves_o not_o to_o be_v of_o god_n one_o occasion_n or_o other_o drive_v they_o awry_o so_o that_o some_o of_o they_o become_v heretic_n some_o of_o they_o although_o they_o fall_v not_o into_o heresy_n yet_o they_o fall_v into_o vice_n and_o become_v so_o irreligious_a that_o all_o the_o former_a grace_n which_o they_o have_v taste_v of_o do_v vanish_v and_o be_v lose_v and_o this_o be_v the_o cause_n we_o be_v will_v by_o saint_n peter_n to_o make_v our_o call_n and_o election_n sure_a for_o see_v the_o reprobate_n receive_v a_o kind_n of_o faith_n and_o zeal_n which_o yet_o be_v not_o the_o true_a and_o lively_a faith_n we_o be_v will_v to_o be_v diligent_a and_o careful_a to_o see_v that_o we_o rest_v not_o in_o that_o faith_n we_o must_v labour_v to_o attain_v to_o that_o testimony_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o adoption_n we_o must_v seek_v to_o be_v confirm_v and_o even_o seal_v with_o the_o holy_a spirit_n of_o promise_n and_o so_o come_v to_o that_o full_a assurance_n of_o faith_n and_o hope_v which_o never_o confound_v and_o that_o be_v it_o which_o saint_n peter_n teach_v the_o way_n to_o come_v unto_o in_o the_o place_n before_o allege_v where_o he_o will_v we_o to_o join_v virtue_n with_o our_o faith_n with_o virtue_n knowledge_n etc._n etc._n for_o if_o we_o follow_v that_o rule_n which_o he_o there_o prescribe_v we_o shall_v be_v sure_a never_o to_o fall_v we_o shall_v then_o with_o a_o steadfast_a faith_n resist_v our_o adversary_n the_o for_o therein_o some_o have_v excel_v other_o far_a because_o god_n do_v not_o give_v his_o gift_n to_o all_o alike_o but_o in_o the_o effect_n which_o be_v the_o apprehend_n of_o christ_n with_o all_o his_o merit_n which_o the_o weak_a faith_n do_v as_o well_o as_o the_o strong_a and_o therefore_o in_o this_o respect_n be_v equal_o precious_a this_o i_o speak_v not_o to_o make_v any_o slothful_a when_o as_o the_o scripture_n do_v prick_v we_o forward_o so_o much_o to_o seek_v increase_n of_o faith_n but_o for_o the_o comfort_n and_o hearten_v of_o the_o weak_a which_o feel_v their_o infirmity_n and_o weakness_n of_o faith_n if_o it_o be_v not_o for_o this_o which_o the_o apostle_n speak_v may_v doubt_v whether_o they_o be_v partaker_n of_o the_o same_o happiness_n with_o they_o now_o hear_v this_o they_o may_v be_v well_o assure_v although_o their_o faith_n shall_v be_v but_o as_o a_o grain_n of_o mustardseed_n yet_o if_o it_o be_v true_a faith_n it_o couple_v they_o weighty_a and_o the_o frame_n so_o heavy_a that_o it_o can_v stand_v upon_o no_o other_o foundation_n but_o this_o that_o be_v to_o say_v the_o righteousness_n faithfulness_n or_o truth_n of_o god_n which_o can_v lie_v for_o if_o we_o will_v persuade_v a_o man_n to_o believe_v by_o this_o reason_n that_o the_o thing_n which_o we_o speak_v be_v that_o which_o have_v be_v teach_v by_o diverse_a man_n of_o great_a learning_n and_o singular_a godliness_n yet_o because_o we_o know_v that_o all_o man_n be_v liar_n except_o we_o be_v fure_z that_o the_o thing_n which_o they_o speak_v be_v those_o which_o god_n have_v speak_v we_o shall_v still_o waver_v and_o our_o faith_n shall_v be_v no_o faith_n which_o alone_o can_v rest_v in_o the_o authority_n of_o god_n and_o not_o of_o man_n 2_o the_o their_o life_n whosoever_o digress_v or_o cast_v his_o eye_n aside_o from_o this_o mark_n and_o end_n of_o his_o ministry_n cease_v to_o be_v the_o minister_n of_o christ_n as_o for_o example_n if_o he_o preach_v the_o gospel_n to_o purchase_v renow_v i_o estimation_n wealth_n or_o ease_n to_o himself_o and_o not_o to_o seek_v this_o reconciliation_n between_o god_n and_o man_n and_o to_o have_v grace_n and_o peace_n multiply_v upon_o they_o he_o may_v well_o sometime_o preach_v the_o truth_n but_o not_o true_o likewise_o those_o parent_n which_o set_v forth_o their_o child_n to_o learning_n with_o this_o mind_n my_o son_n snall_a live_v a_o easy_a and_o merry_a life_n he_o shall_v get_v some_o livinge_n promotion_n and_o dignity_n in_o the_o church_n do_v lay_v acorrupt_a and_o rot_a foundation_n and_o have_v not_o learn_v this_o doctrine_n of_o the_o apostle_n and_o therefore_o the_o building_n follow_v agreeable_o for_o the_o most_o when_o they_o come_v to_o have_v learning_n not_o forget_v this_o lesson_n which_o they_o learn_v of_o their_o father_n do_v become_v greedy_a cather_n of_o benefice_n and_o promotion_n rather_o than_o careful_a feeder_n of_o the_o flock_n of_o christ_n but_o here_o it_o may_v be_v object_v how_o the_o apostle_n can_v wish_v that_o grace_n which_o be_v the_o free_a favour_n of_o god_n shall_v be_v multiply_v upon_o they_o see_v that_o god_n love_n and_o favour_n do_v not_o increase_v nor_o diminish_v but_o he_o love_v and_o favour_v always_o alike_o be_v subject_a to_o no_o alteration_n or_o change_n this_o may_v well_o be_v answer_v that_o saint_n peter_n do_v not_o speak_v here_o of_o grace_n as_o it_o be_v in_o itself_o in_o god_n towards_o man_n but_o of_o their_o feeling_n the_o same_o which_o grow_v by_o degree_n from_o less_o to_o great_a and_o because_o it_o be_v a_o thing_n so_o precious_a the_o apostle_n wish_v that_o it_o may_v be_v multiply_v upon_o they_o he_o express_v the_o mean_a to_o be_v the_o knowledge_n and_o acknowledge_v of_o god_n and_o of_o jesus_n christ_n our_o lord_n 3_o according_a as_o his_o divine_a power_n have_v give_v unto_o we_o all_o thing_n that_o pertain_v unto_o life_n and_o godliness_n through_o the_o acknowledge_v of_o he_o that_o have_v call_v we_o unto_o glory_n and_o virtue_n this_o be_v fit_o join_v to_o the_o former_a verse_n to_o show_v that_o the_o abundance_n of_o grace_n and_o peace_n be_v not_o without_o cause_n require_v at_o our_o hand_n as_o if_o the_o apostle_n shall_v say_v you_o be_v not_o to_o content_v nor_o to_o satisfy_v yourselves_o with_o a_o scant_a measure_n of_o god_n gift_n and_o grace_n see_v that_o there_o be_v offer_v unto_o you_o and_o set_v forth_o in_o christ_n unto_o who_o you_o may_v resort_v as_o to_o a_o storehouse_n
doctrine_n of_o popery_n be_v that_o god_n do_v make_v choice_n conditional_o respect_v the_o good_a deed_n which_o he_o do_v foresee_v in_o they_o and_o so_o the_o election_n shall_v depend_v upon_o out_o of_o doubt_n and_o sure_o resolve_v in_o ourselves_o not_o by_o fantasy_v opinion_n but_o by_o sure_a and_o substantial_a proof_n that_o we_o be_v choose_v of_o god_n and_o therefore_o can_v perish_v if_o we_o respect_v the_o unchangeable_a counsel_n of_o god_n therein_o do_v rest_n alone_o the_o sure_a foundation_n of_o election_n because_o god_n which_o can_v be_v deceive_v nor_o can_v repent_v or_o change_v have_v make_v the_o choice_n therefore_o those_o who_o he_o have_v choose_v can_v never_o perish_v but_o if_o we_o regard_v the_o way_n and_o mean_n by_o which_o we_o may_v come_v to_o know_v this_o favour_n of_o god_n to_o be_v towards_o we_o the_o lord_n by_o his_o apostle_n tell_v we_o that_o this_o be_v the_o way_n even_o to_o give_v all_o diligence_n and_o study_v to_o be_v rich_o deck_v with_o his_o grace_n or_o those_o forename_a virtue_n for_o by_o these_o we_o shall_v undoubted_o know_v because_o if_o we_o have_v they_o if_o they_o abound_v in_o we_o if_o we_o walk_v in_o they_o we_o shall_v as_o he_o say_v never_o fall_v let_v we_o learn_v therefore_o first_o this_o that_o election_n in_o itself_o rest_v upon_o the_o unchangeable_a purpose_n and_o counsel_n of_o god_n then_o second_o that_o we_o be_v not_o to_o setch_v the_o certainty_n of_o it_o in_o ourselves_o from_o some_o revelation_n neither_o be_v we_o to_o climb_v up_o into_o heaven_n to_o search_v in_o the_o counsel_n of_o god_n whether_o our_o name_n be_v in_o the_o book_n of_o life_n but_o we_o be_v to_o fetch_v our_o warrant_n from_o within_o ourselves_o and_o that_o from_o the_o fruit_n of_o the_o spirit_n which_o indeed_o although_o it_o be_v out_o of_o ourselves_o yet_o because_o it_o be_v not_o of_o ourselves_o be_v certain_a and_o infallible_a if_o you_o will_v understand_v this_o more_o plain_o first_o i_o say_v it_o be_v out_o of_o ourselves_o or_o from_o within_o ourselves_o because_o we_o must_v take_v the_o trial_n whether_o those_o thing_n be_v in_o we_o which_o be_v give_v to_o all_o those_o who_o god_n do_v choose_v than_o i_o say_v it_o be_v not_o of_o ourselves_o for_o if_o it_o be_v it_o shall_v be_v altogether_o uncertain_a but_o of_o the_o seal_n of_o god_n wherewith_o he_o have_v seal_v we_o which_o be_v the_o spirit_n of_o sanctification_n now_o mark_v well_o i_o pray_v you_o if_o you_o do_v say_v s._n peter_n these_o thing_n you_o shall_v never_o fall_v and_o why_o be_v it_o because_o our_o do_n be_v so_o perfect_a &_o sure_a or_o that_o we_o be_v so_o constant_a of_o ourselves_o no_o not_o so_o but_o by_o these_o virtue_n we_o have_v seal_v i_o with_o his_o spirit_n so_o may_v this_o say_v i_o be_o sure_a to_o be_v damn_v continue_v in_o this_o case_n because_o i_o have_v not_o faith_n but_o only_o a_o waver_a &_o doubtful_a opinion_n we_o may_v see_v by_o this_o how_o beneficial_a they_o be_v and_o merciful_a to_o their_o own_o soul_n which_o with_o all_o their_o power_n day_n and_o night_n give_v up_o themselves_o to_o seek_v after_o the_o knowledge_n and_o obedience_n of_o the_o lord_n will_v for_o not_o give_v over_o nor_o wax_a weary_a they_o shall_v in_o continuance_n of_o time_n if_o they_o ply_v it_o hard_o find_v such_o a_o blessing_n from_o the_o lord_n in_o the_o increase_n of_o faith_n and_o virtue_n that_o will_v cause_v they_o to_o say_v we_o have_v not_o lose_v our_o labour_n on_o the_o other_o side_n we_o may_v see_v how_o unkind_a and_o cruel_a they_o be_v to_o themselves_o which_o through_o idleness_n and_o sloth_n in_o seek_v after_o god_n with_o their_o daily_a and_o continual_a sin_n do_v even_o as_o it_o be_v cut_v the_o throat_n of_o their_o faith_n see_v they_o can_v not_o have_v trust_n in_o he_o who_o they_o do_v so_o much_o disobey_v this_o place_n be_v as_o a_o mighty_a engine_n to_o overthrow_v the_o vanity_n of_o sundry_a opinion_n which_o do_v reign_v in_o man_n as_o first_o of_o all_o in_o those_o which_o cry_v out_o against_o this_o doctrine_n work_n to_o come_v to_o the_o sure_a and_o undoubted_a knowledge_n that_o we_o be_v choose_v unto_o life_n they_o say_v quite_o contrary_a if_o you_o will_v have_v man_n careful_a of_o well_o do_v patience_n and_o with_o patience_n godliness_n and_o with_o godliness_n brotherlie_a kindness_n and_o with_o brotherlie_a kindness_n love_n we_o shall_v make_v our_o call_n and_o election_n sure_a from_o this_o lust_n if_o we_o will_v repent_v indeed_o we_o must_v begin_v here_o for_o if_o they_o be_v change_v only_o in_o their_o outward_a deed_n and_o word_n and_o this_o inward_a sickness_n not_o heal_v they_o have_v gain_v nothing_o no_o more_o than_o a_o man_n which_o will_v destroy_v a_o tree_n and_o do_v no_o more_o than_o lop_v and_o shred_v off_o certain_a bough_n and_o twig_n leave_v the_o stump_n and_o root_n behind_o for_o so_o long_o as_o this_o do_v live_v in_o they_o they_o may_v well_o seem_v in_o the_o eye_n of_o man_n to_o be_v very_o great_a converte_n if_o they_o of_o ignorant_a idiote_n be_v become_v such_o as_o have_v get_v some_o skill_n and_o knowledge_n from_o drunkard_n ruffian_n adulterer_n and_o such_o like_a they_o become_v sober_a modest_a and_o of_o good_a behaviour_n as_o this_o may_v be_v do_v before_o man_n and_o yet_o the_o heart_n nothing_o alter_v before_o god_n for_o there_o be_v many_o cause_n which_o may_v move_v man_n to_o seem_v outward_o to_o be_v godly_a when_o the_o heart_n within_o be_v fraught_v with_o loathsome_a lust_n and_o full_a of_o rot_a corruption_n which_o make_v man_n still_o altogether_o abominable_a before_o god_n to_o be_v short_a therefore_o a_o man_n shall_v never_o right_o judge_v of_o himself_o whether_o he_o have_v repent_v unless_o he_o look_v to_o the_o bottom_n of_o this_o sore_a that_o it_o may_v be_v heal_v the_o great_a multitude_n of_o man_n be_v as_o blind_a as_o beetle_n in_o this_o point_n imagine_v that_o repentance_n be_v a_o very_a light_n and_o easy_a thing_n which_o they_o can_v have_v when_o they_o listen_v when_o a_o man_n of_o wisdom_n say_v this_o that_o here_o lie_v so_o deep_a a_o matter_n that_o here_o be_v root_n which_o be_v hard_a to_o be_v pull_v up_o he_o be_v move_v to_o be_v the_o more_o careful_a lest_o he_o deceive_v himself_o look_v therefore_o every_o man_n to_o his_o thought_n for_o by_o they_o be_v the_o trial_n make_v if_o the_o thought_n be_v there_o be_v a_o right_a spirit_n renew_v in_o i_o i_o have_v repent_v i_o have_v not_o play_v the_o hypocrite_n i_o feel_v a_o upright_a heart_n towards_o god_n i_o feel_v the_o corrupt_a fountain_n stop_v so_o that_o the_o filthy_a matter_n and_o stink_a mud_n do_v not_o boil_v forth_o as_o it_o do_v it_o may_v also_o be_v demand_v here_o whether_o this_o lust_n be_v not_o a_o sin_n or_o a_o corruption_n of_o itself_o because_o saint_n peter_n say_v that_o corruption_n rest_v in_o it_o the_o place_n which_o i_o allege_v out_o of_o the_o 51._o psalm_n do_v prove_v it_o to_o be_v a_o sin_n also_o it_o may_v be_v prove_v out_o of_o the_o five_o to_o the_o roman_n where_o saint_n paul_n proove_v that_o infant_n have_v sin_n because_o they_o be_v subject_a to_o death_n which_o be_v the_o reward_n of_o sin_n although_o as_o he_o say_v they_o sin_v not_o after_o the_o similitude_n of_o the_o transgression_n of_o adam_n therefore_o if_o we_o have_v none_o other_o but_o this_o it_o be_v enough_o to_o condemn_v we_o and_o utter_o to_o cast_v we_o away_o let_v we_o never_o cease_v therefore_o until_o we_o feel_v a_o change_n in_o ourselves_o even_o in_o this_o secret_a infection_n for_o otherwise_o we_o shall_v never_o be_v able_a to_o fly_v the_o corruption_n which_o be_v in_o the_o world_n or_o as_o saint_n james_n speak_v in_o the_o first_o chapter_n of_o his_o epistle_n to_o keep_v ourselves_o unspotted_a of_o the_o world_n so_o long_o as_o we_o carry_v the_o corrupt_a world_n in_o our_o breast_n neither_o shall_v our_o religion_n be_v pure_a for_o thus_o it_o be_v faide_v if_o any_o man_n among_o you_o seem_v religious_a and_o refrain_v not_o his_o tongue_n but_o deceive_v his_o own_o heart_n this_o man_n religion_n be_v vain_a pure_a religion_n and_o undefiled_a before_o god_n even_o the_o father_n be_v this_o to_o visit_v the_o fatherless_a and_o widow_n in_o their_o distress_n and_o to_o keep_v himself_o unspotted_a of_o the_o world_n the_o second_o sermon_n upon_o the_o 5.6_o and_o 7._o verse_n 5_o therefore_o give_v even_o all_o diligence_n thereunto_o join_v moreover_o virtue_n with_o your_o faith_n and_o with_o virtue_n knowledge_n put_v to_o their_o diligence_n but_o also_o as_o he_o say_v even_o all_o diligence_n for_o as_o it_o be_v the_o great_a and_o chief_a thing_n which_o we_o be_v to_o look_v after_o so_o there_o be_v require_v at_o our_o hand_n to_o give_v our_o principal_a care_n and_o study_v thereunto_o this_o equity_n must_v easy_o be_v grant_v that_o if_o we_o can_v obtain_v or_o get_v the_o thing_n of_o this_o life_n which_o be_v small_a in_o comparison_n unless_o we_o put_v to_o our_o diligence_n for_o god_n will_v have_v it_o to_o be_v so_o that_o then_o of_o good_a right_n
look_v how_o much_o heavenly_a thing_n exceed_v in_o dignity_n the_o earthy_a so_o much_o must_v the_o care_n &_o diligence_n bestow_v upon_o they_o exceed_v how_o far_o almost_o be_v all_o man_n from_o this_o doctrine_n both_o in_o practice_n and_o judgement_n first_o when_o we_o see_v the_o exceed_a travail_n and_o pain_n which_o they_o stick_v not_o willing_o to_o bestow_v in_o get_v the_o beggarly_a trash_n of_o this_o world_n either_o riches_n or_o honour_n they_o will_v ride_v and_o run_v early_a and_o late_o by_o night_n and_o by_o day_n by_o sea_n and_o by_o land_n winter_n and_o summer_n wear_v out_o their_o body_n almost_o pine_v and_o starve_v themselves_o with_o hunger_n and_o beat_v their_o brain_n with_o as_o great_a diligence_n as_o can_v be_v possible_a but_o when_o it_o come_v to_o these_o thing_n which_o saint_n peter_n speak_v as_o thing_n of_o no_o price_n they_o pass_v by_o they_o in_o such_o wise_a that_o they_o be_v here_o even_o as_o slothful_a and_o careless_a as_o they_o be_v diligent_a in_o the_o other_o for_o judgement_n in_o this_o behalf_n if_o a_o man_n talk_v with_o these_o worldly_a man_n they_o will_v show_v their_o mind_n and_o opinion_n ask_v they_o why_o they_o be_v so_o careful_a for_o these_o worldly_a thing_n their_o answer_n be_v ready_a we_o shall_v otherwise_o come_v short_a of_o they_o and_o go_v without_o they_o and_o why_o do_v you_o not_o seek_v as_o fast_o for_o heavenly_a thing_n they_o be_v the_o great_a they_o be_v indeed_o the_o great_a but_o we_o commit_v that_o to_o god_n we_o will_v not_o meddle_v with_o that_o thus_o they_o shift_v off_o the_o care_n of_o godliness_n as_o though_o god_n do_v not_o require_v it_o at_o their_o hand_n never_o hear_v of_o this_o which_o saint_n peter_n require_v we_o must_v take_v heed_n of_o this_o give_v ear_n to_o god_n who_o teach_v we_o this_o lesson_n by_o the_o holy_a apostle_n for_o if_o we_o let_v this_o pass_v we_o be_v most_o miserable_a here_o also_o when_o we_o be_v warn_v to_o give_v all_o diligence_n appear_v plain_o how_o hard_o a_o thing_n it_o be_v to_o fly_v from_o corrupt_a lust_n for_o if_o it_o be_v a_o easy_a thing_n to_o be_v do_v less_o diligence_n may_v serve_v but_o sin_n cleave_v near_a and_o stick_v fast_o in_o we_o and_o be_v not_o easy_o shake_v off_o it_o be_v deep_o root_v so_o that_o unless_o we_o dig_v very_o deep_a we_o be_v sure_a to_o leave_v the_o root_n still_o behind_o which_o will_v grow_v and_o spring_v again_o as_o fast_o as_o before_o yea_o oftentimes_o seem_v to_o be_v dead_a they_o sudden_o revive_v so_o that_o we_o be_v set_v a_o work_n while_o we_o live_v here_o without_o any_o intermission_n to_o be_v still_o toil_v to_o pull_v up_o these_o weed_n the_o ground_n be_v so_o rank_n that_o in_o a_o very_a short_a time_n it_o will_v be_v whole_o overgrow_v therefore_o such_o as_o despise_v the_o mean_n which_o god_n have_v appoint_v or_o use_v they_o over_o negligent_o must_v needs_o have_v their_o heart_n overgrow_v with_o these_o stink_a weed_n of_o lust_n and_o concupiscence_n and_o so_o if_o ever_o there_o be_v any_o good_a seed_n in_o they_o as_o good_a motion_n or_o inclination_n to_o fear_n god_n they_o be_v by_o and_o by_o choke_v so_o that_o they_o can_v bring_v forth_o no_o fruit_n or_o at_o least_o not_o ripe_a and_o timely_a fruit_n but_o here_o may_v be_v object_v that_o this_o agree_v not_o with_o the_o former_a say_n that_o the_o divine_a power_n have_v give_v we_o all_o thing_n which_o pertain_v to_o life_n and_o godliness_n there_o he_o ascribe_v all_o to_o god_n and_o take_v all_o from_o we_o here_o he_o seem_v to_o give_v somewhat_o unto_o our_o diligence_n and_o so_o to_o establish_v freewill_n in_o us._n we_o must_v answer_v here_o that_o god_n work_v all_o in_o all_o and_o alone_o strike_v the_o stroke_n yet_o he_o do_v not_o work_v in_o we_o as_o the_o carpenter_n or_o mason_n work_v upon_o the_o log_n and_o the_o stone_n which_o have_v no_o feel_n of_o that_o which_o be_v do_v upon_o they_o and_o therefore_o nothing_o of_o they_o be_v require_v but_o we_o have_v a_o will_n in_o we_o and_o reason_n which_o of_o themselves_o be_v corrupt_a do_v nothing_o but_o hinder_v this_o work_n until_o such_o time_n as_o god_n have_v fashion_v they_o a_o new_a we_o have_v appetite_n and_o affection_n in_o we_o but_o of_o themselves_o mere_a rebel_n these_o he_o tame_v and_o subdue_v so_o that_o this_o work_n of_o god_n in_o we_o be_v not_o without_o a_o feel_n of_o it_o for_o he_o move_v we_o to_o will_n to_o desire_v to_o sorrow_n to_o rejoice_v and_o such_o like_a so_o that_o our_o diligence_n be_v require_v because_o he_o work_v in_o none_o but_o he_o do_v make_v they_o diligent_a here_o be_v still_o then_o that_o which_o god_n do_v bestow_v upon_o we_o and_o not_o that_o which_o we_o have_v of_o ourselves_o by_o this_o place_n all_o those_o be_v answer_v which_o cloak_n and_o defend_v themselves_o in_o their_o naughtiness_n and_o sloth_n in_o the_o service_n of_o god_n after_o this_o manner_n we_o have_v that_o which_o god_n have_v give_v we_o all_o man_n be_v not_o alike_o godly_a every_o man_n can_v do_v as_o you_o do_v when_o their_o own_o heart_n and_o conscience_n do_v tell_v every_o of_o they_o the_o contrary_a say_v thou_o be_v careless_a and_o negligent_a thou_o have_v as_o much_o as_o thou_o desire_v for_o god_n do_v increase_v all_o gift_n and_o grace_n in_o those_o which_o use_v all_o diligence_n in_o seek_v after_o he_o let_v we_o learn_v therefore_o brethren_n to_o put_v in_o practice_v all_o those_o thing_n which_o be_v here_o teach_v to_o give_v great_a diligence_n and_o so_o beat_v our_o brain_n more_o earnest_o about_o heavenly_a thing_n then_o about_o these_o earthly_a to_o labour_v and_o travel_v more_o for_o godliness_n then_o for_o treasure_n and_o riches_n which_o if_o we_o do_v we_o shall_v feel_v increase_n of_o strength_n to_o cast_v out_o corrupt_a lust_n although_o not_o so_o much_o as_o fain_o we_o will_v yet_o god_n be_v true_a we_o shall_v have_v so_o much_o that_o we_o can_v fail_v or_o miss_v of_o our_o desire_n it_o follow_v join_v moreover_o virtue_n with_o your_o faith_n etc._n etc._n saint_n peter_n know_v what_o babe_n we_o be_v how_o unable_a to_o guide_v our_o step_n in_o the_o path_n of_o godliness_n and_o that_o make_v he_o not_o only_o to_o move_v and_o persuade_v to_o godliness_n but_o even_o as_o it_o be_v take_v we_o by_o the_o hand_n and_o teach_v we_o how_o to_o tread_v every_o step_n he_o rehearse_v particular_o the_o thing_n wherein_o we_o be_v to_o travel_v when_o he_o say_v join_v moreour_n with_o your_o faith_n virtue_n with_o virtue_n knowledge_n with_o knowledge_n temperance_n with_o temperance_n patience_n with_o patience_n godliness_n and_o with_o godliness_n brotherlie_a kindness_n and_o with_o brotherlie_a kindness_n love_n i'faith_o here_o be_v set_v in_o the_o first_o place_n unto_o which_o all_o the_o other_o must_v be_v join_v because_o without_o it_o we_o can_v by_o any_o mean_n please_v god_n it_o do_v justify_v we_o before_o god_n alone_o but_o yet_o it_o do_v not_o now_o if_o we_o mark_v well_o what_o manner_n of_o man_n they_o be_v to_o who_o he_o write_v namely_o no_o babe_n nor_o yoonglinge_n in_o the_o gospel_n for_o he_o say_v they_o have_v obtain_v like_o precious_a faith_n with_o he_o and_o afterward_o in_o this_o chapter_n he_o say_v they_o do_v know_v and_o be_v establish_v in_o the_o present_a truth_n we_o shall_v easy_o perceive_v how_o this_o may_v stop_v the_o mouth_n of_o many_o which_o hold_v blind_a error_n first_o of_o all_o of_o those_o which_o affirm_v that_o ignorance_n be_v the_o mother_n of_o devotion_n if_o godliness_n and_o virtue_n be_v the_o true_a devotion_n than_o it_o must_v needs_o follow_v that_o their_o doctrine_n be_v false_a and_o devilish_a see_v we_o be_v charge_v to_o join_v unto_o our_o virtue_n knowledge_n it_o be_v true_a if_o they_o mean_v popish_a devotion_n for_o they_o can_v never_o have_v keep_v man_n in_o awe_n to_o be_v zealous_a of_o their_o religion_n and_o to_o seek_v for_o that_o at_o the_o hand_n of_o man_n which_o god_n alone_o do_v give_v unless_o they_o have_v keep_v they_o in_o blindness_n and_o ignorance_n and_o therefore_o they_o take_v a_o wise_a way_n to_o keep_v the_o people_n from_o know_v the_o word_n which_o so_o soon_o as_o it_o break_v forth_o again_o disclose_v all_o their_o falsehood_n and_o treachery_n in_o so_o much_o that_o neither_o good_a nor_o bad_a almost_o have_v any_o devotion_n unto_o they_o second_o of_o those_o which_o although_o they_o be_v not_o rank_n papist_n yet_o have_v in_o they_o still_o a_o smack_n and_o savour_n of_o popish_a
principle_n and_o therefore_o like_o fool_n be_v also_o enemy_n unto_o knowledge_n for_o thus_o they_o speak_v it_o be_v no_o matter_n if_o there_o be_v less_o preach_v i_o think_v the_o people_n be_v the_o worse_a for_o it_o there_o be_v knowledge_n even_o enough_o what_o shall_v lay_v man_n be_v trouble_v to_o learn_v or_o to_o seek_v for_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o scripture_n let_v they_o tend_v their_o work_n and_o look_v to_o their_o occupation_n and_o learn_v to_o be_v quiet_a and_o to_o deal_v honest_o against_o these_o poor_a blind_a beast_n for_o i_o may_v use_v no_o gentle_a speech_n we_o be_v to_o reason_n out_o of_o this_o place_n first_o that_o all_o man_n know_v they_o never_o so_o much_o be_v here_o command_v to_o increase_v in_o knowledge_n to_o the_o end_n they_o may_v increase_v in_o faith_n and_o godliness_n secondlie_o let_v they_o consider_v to_o what_o manner_n of_o man_n saint_n peter_n write_v namely_o to_o poor_a and_o rich_a man_n woman_n and_o child_n to_o all_o sort_n and_o to_o be_v short_a to_o as_o many_o as_o will_v have_v faith_n and_o virtue_n and_o so_o come_v to_o life_n and_o glory_n and_o therefore_o as_o well_o the_o poor_a ploughman_n as_o the_o great_a clerk_n be_v command_v to_o increase_v his_o knowledge_n out_o of_o god_n book_n thirdlie_o they_o much_o overshoote_v themselves_o when_o they_o will_v bear_v they_o in_o hand_n that_o knowledge_n which_o be_v the_o guider_n of_o virtue_n shall_v be_v the_o cause_n of_o vice_n nay_o if_o we_o wipe_v our_o eye_n and_o look_v better_o to_o the_o matter_n we_o shall_v see_v that_o there_o be_v a_o flood_n of_o ignorance_n which_o have_v almost_o overwhelm_v all_o and_o in_o many_o which_o seem_v to_o know_v very_o much_o if_o they_o be_v sound_v to_o the_o bottom_n there_o shall_v be_v find_v in_o they_o gross_a ignorance_n and_o palpable_a darkness_n and_o so_o indeed_o the_o true_a cause_n of_o all_o foul_a sin_n which_o abound_v at_o this_o day_n among_o we_o and_o flow_v even_o as_o a_o swell_a sea_n be_v the_o want_n of_o true_a knowledge_n this_o ignorance_n have_v take_v suchroote_n that_o all_o they_o which_o have_v make_v proof_n will_v confess_v with_o i_o that_o our_o time_n be_v like_o the_o time_n of_o the_o prophet_n esay_n chap._n 28._o who_o have_v labour_v himself_o as_o it_o be_v out_o of_o breath_n and_o teach_n and_o see_v so_o small_a profit_v be_v command_v of_o the_o lord_n still_o to_o go_v to_o his_o business_n burst_v forth_o in_o these_o speech_n who_o shall_v i_o teach_v knowledge_n who_o shall_v i_o make_v for_o to_o understand_v they_o that_o be_v wain_v from_o the_o milk_n and_o draw_v from_o the_o breast_n for_o precept_n must_v be_v upon_o precept_n precept_n upon_o precept_n line_n unto_o line_n line_n unto_o line_n a_o little_a here_o and_o a_o little_a there_o and_o in_o another_o place_n he_o say_v the_o word_n of_o the_o lord_n be_v like_o a_o seal_a book_n if_o he_o come_v to_o one_o say_v read_v this_o i_o pray_v you_o he_o make_v answer_v i_o can_v read_v to_o another_o that_o can_v read_v he_o answer_v i_o can_v for_o it_o be_v seal_v furthermore_o let_v those_o silly_a creature_n learn_v of_o this_o place_n to_o be_v ashamed_a of_o that_o wherein_o they_o seem_v after_o a_o sort_n to_o glory_n when_o they_o use_v to_o say_v as_o they_o think_v in_o defence_n of_o themselves_o we_o be_v without_o skill_n we_o have_v no_o knowledge_n we_o be_v poor_a honest_a man_n we_o have_v no_o learning_n it_o be_v as_o much_o as_o to_o say_v we_o have_v no_o faith_n we_o have_v no_o virtue_n we_o have_v no_o godliness_n for_o we_o be_v plain_o teach_v here_o that_o faith_n virtue_n and_o knowledge_n must_v increase_v and_o grow_v up_o together_o let_v we_o all_o print_n this_o lesson_n deep_o in_o our_o mind_n that_o it_o may_v drive_v we_o to_o make_v haste_n to_o come_v out_o of_o our_o ignorance_n and_o to_o seek_v apace_o after_o knowledge_n let_v we_o take_v heed_n of_o flatter_a ourselves_o as_o some_o other_o do_v which_o have_v get_v some_o skill_n or_o at_o least_o think_v that_o they_o have_v set_v very_o light_a by_o the_o public_a teach_n too_o deal_v withal_o because_o they_o be_v wise_a in_o their_o own_o conceit_n and_o not_o in_o the_o lord_n for_o if_o they_o have_v once_o but_o even_o a_o little_a taste_v of_o true_a knowledge_n continuance_n of_o time_n as_o it_o be_v gather_v rust_n to_o become_v slack_a if_o we_o have_v desire_v therefore_o to_o continue_v let_v we_o learn_v to_o put_v this_o lesson_n in_o practice_n but_o why_o do_v he_o will_v we_o to_o join_v temperance_n or_o continence_n with_o knowledge_n it_o shall_v seem_v he_o have_v no_o regard_n of_o any_o affinity_n in_o match_v these_o thing_n together_o our_o own_o judgement_n that_o we_o will_v stand_v in_o defence_n of_o that_o which_o we_o have_v once_o like_v and_o not_o admit_v any_o reason_n to_o the_o contrary_a both_o these_o be_v contrary_a be_v somewhat_o strange_a but_o if_o we_o look_v well_o unto_o it_o we_o then_o shall_v perceive_v the_o meaning_n more_o plain_o patience_n be_v not_o only_o requisite_a in_o those_o which_o have_v own_o free_a grace_n for_o which_o saint_n paul_n allege_v out_o of_o moses_n that_o god_n will_v have_v mercy_n on_o whosoever_o he_o will_v have_v mercy_n and_o who_o he_o will_v he_o harden_v add_v thereupon_o that_o it_o be_v neither_o of_o he_o that_o will_v nor_o yet_o of_o he_o that_o run_v but_o of_o god_n which_o show_v mercy_n again_o the_o
