or_o to_o be_v he_o love_v before_o other_o man_n and_o that_o to_o the_o same_o end_n which_o we_o have_v speak_v albeit_o by_o corruption_n of_o nature_n he_o be_v incline_v hereunto_o great_o to_o desire_v to_o be_v esteem_v and_o repute_v in_o like_a manner_n as_o it_o be_v in_o every_o man_n power_n in_o some_o degree_n who_o god_n spirit_n have_v sanctify_v to_o desire_v or_o not_o to_o desire_v any_o thing_n so_o be_v it_o to_o do_v the_o same_o as_o often_o as_o he_o will_v bend_v his_o will_n and_o use_v the_o holy_a mean_n thereunto_o yea_o every_o hour_n as_o by_o how_o much_o often_o he_o incline_v and_o enforce_v his_o will_n to_o desire_v or_o not_o to_o desire_v so_o much_o soon_o shall_v he_o extinguish_v in_o the_o soul_n all_o vicious_a habit_n and_o engender_v those_o virtuous_a for_o better_a declaration_n whereof_o let_v it_o be_v remarkable_a that_o to_o produce_v the_o act_n of_o willing_a the_o thing_n which_o we_o abhor_v we_o must_v consider_v that_o god_n be_v hereby_o serve_v in_o that_o we_o do_v desire_v this_o thing_n and_o incline_v ourwils_fw-mi unto_o it_o and_o as_o it_o be_v use_v violence_n to_o the_o will_v to_o effect_v it_o even_o sort_n enforce_v the_o will_n that_o it_o shall_v not_o effect_v and_o desire_v it_o and_o this_o shall_v be_v true_o not_o to_o desire_v when_o we_o enforce_v the_o will_n albeit_o there_o remain_v a_o certain_a repugnancy_n of_o sensuality_n as_o we_o see_v it_o fall_v out_o in_o the_o sick_a man_n who_o will_v not_o eat_v the_o meat_n albeit_o he_o have_v a_o appetite_n to_o it_o because_o it_o be_v hurtful_a to_o he_o and_o it_o be_v something_o profitable_a for_o he_o to_o be_v unwilling_a to_o eat_v it_o albeit_o the_o inordinate_a appetite_n he_o have_v to_o that_o meat_n be_v not_o take_v away_o so_o we_o see_v that_o we_o may_v produce_v the_o act_n of_o virtue_n as_o often_o as_o we_o will_v be_v assist_v by_o the_o mighty_a work_n of_o god_n holy_a spirit_n but_o we_o must_v consider_v that_o beside_o the_o continual_a care_n we_o ought_v to_o have_v of_o exercise_v the_o will_n to_o desire_v the_o good_a thing_n that_o be_v to_o be_v desire_v and_o to_o omit_v and_o and_o little_o they_o will_v gather_v strength_n and_o bring_v no_o small_a benefit_n to_o the_o soul_n for_o ever_o as_o he_o that_o give_v himself_o to_o the_o study_n of_o grammar_n if_o he_o at_o grammarian_n especial_o if_o every_o day_n with_o all_o diligence_n and_o care_n of_o memory_n and_o understanding_n he_o apply_v himself_o to_o the_o study_n all_o which_o care_n and_o endeavour_n honour_n may_v be_v impediment_n to_o contempt_n and_o direction_n which_o be_v the_o way_n to_o humility_n which_o god_n so_o much_o love_v such_o act_n be_v of_o so_o great_a efficacy_n that_o a_o few_o such_o will_v produce_v a_o excellent_a habit_n of_o humility_n and_o patience_n and_o so_o may_v we_o say_v of_o other_o virtue_n but_o above_o all_o our_o frailty_n require_v that_o we_o labour_v with_o great_a sorrow_n we_o root_n up_o vice_n out_o of_o the_o soul_n and_o we_o do_v not_o only_o kill_v the_o root_n of_o vice_n that_o great_a one_o of_o sin_n bring_v forth_o and_o practise_v but_o every_o small_a inclination_n which_o we_o feel_v in_o ourselves_o to_o sin_n be_v the_o root_n of_o sin_n move_v we_o to_o do_v so_o against_o that_o which_o the_o gospel_n command_v us._n therefore_o we_o must_v strive_v to_o strangle_v these_o inclination_n as_o the_o child_n of_o the_o most_o high_a god_n with_o all_o our_o power_n for_o albeit_o such_o root_n be_v deep_o out_o of_o the_o earth_n the_o root_n of_o corporal_a plant_n for_o such_o root_n be_v not_o eradicate_v and_o unroot_v at_o one_o two_o or_o three_o blow_n but_o by_o many_o and_o frequent_a strong_a achievement_n and_o labour_n but_o by_o many_o more_o labour_n be_v one_o vicious_a habit_n to_o be_v displant_v for_o it_o have_v lay_v his_o root_n much_o low_a and_o more_o fix_o both_o in_o the_o body_n and_o mind_n this_o instruction_n may_v seem_v to_o contain_v nothing_o but_o dry_a and_o barren_a word_n but_o such_o do_v the_o ground_n of_o all_o act_n and_o science_n seem_v to_o be_v yet_o of_o such_o great_a benefit_n be_v this_o instruction_n that_o this_o alone_a suffice_v to_o teach_v we_o the_o manner_n and_o reason_n of_o do_v well_o albeit_o all_o other_o mean_n be_v unknown_a and_o it_o be_v so_o necessary_a withal_o to_o be_v know_v and_o full_o understand_v as_o it_o be_v necessary_a for_o he_o that_o will_v make_v a_o strong_a and_o stable_a building_n to_o desire_v injury_n and_o persecution_n for_o the_o love_n of_o god_n and_o our_o redeemer_n who_o exhort_v unto_o such_o thing_n and_o suffer_v such_o thing_n for_o our_o sake_n and_o such_o a_o habit_n be_v thus_o to_o be_v produce_v as_o in_o the_o sixth_o instruction_n we_o hear_v thou_o offer_v to_o the_o thought_n of_o thy_o understanding_n this_o objection_n what_o will_v thou_o do_v if_o such_o or_o such_o a_o injury_n namely_o such_o as_o thou_o abhor_v be_v do_v unto_o thou_o sudden_o from_o the_o evil_a habit_n that_o be_v in_o thou_o there_o arise_v in_o thy_o mind_n a_o certain_a horror_n of_o this_o injury_n therefore_o present_o call_v to_o mind_n the_o great_a good_a which_o accrue_v unto_o thou_o by_o the_o sufferance_n of_o this_o injury_n and_o the_o like_a and_o thou_o shall_v bind_v thy_o will_n to_o desire_v such_o thing_n nor_o shall_v thou_o leave_v thus_o to_o bind_v thyself_o unto_o it_o albeit_o that_o it_o seem_v whole_o to_o be_v constrain_v for_o there_o be_v ever_o some_o voluntarinesse_n in_o it_o and_o so_o often_o shall_v thou_o produce_v such_o act_n that_o that_o may_v increase_v which_o seem_v scarce_o to_o be_v voluntary_a that_o thou_o may_v voluntary_o suffer_v injury_n and_o that_o this_o habit_n may_v be_v plant_v in_o thou_o and_o this_o example_n may_v serve_v also_o to_o plant_v the_o habit_n of_o other_o virtue_n namely_o by_o consider_v the_o great_a good_a of_o these_o virtue_n and_o compel_v the_o will_n unto_o they_o and_o if_o thou_o consider_v that_o it_o be_v the_o will_n of_o god_n that_o thou_o shall_v be_v averse_a from_o all_o filthy_a pleasure_n of_o the_o flesh_n and_o compel_v thy_o will_n never_o to_o desire_v they_o not_o so_o much_o as_o in_o thought_n to_o dwell_v upon_o they_o albeit_o it_o be_v but_o for_o some_o small_a time_n thou_o may_v in_o few_o day_n attain_v to_o a_o excellent_a habit_n of_o chastity_n and_o thus_o may_v one_o be_v enrich_v with_o all_o holy_a habit_n but_o we_o may_v observe_v that_o as_o before_o if_o by_o the_o only_a praecogitation_n of_o a_o injury_n one_o may_v gain_v the_o habit_n of_o patience_n much_o soon_o and_o better_a may_v it_o be_v hold_v if_o indeed_o injury_n be_v do_v one_o or_o any_o other_o thing_n wherewith_o we_o seem_v before_o man_n to_o be_v confound_v and_o debase_v so_o that_o we_o compel_v the_o will_n to_o desire_v the_o same_o for_o the_o act_n of_o the_o will_n receive_v this_o injury_n be_v more_o vehement_a and_o so_o do_v more_o tame_v the_o soul_n then_o be_v those_o of_o the_o will_v only_o desire_v or_o receive_v a_o injury_n only_o in_o cogitation_n offer_v namely_o by_o think_v that_o it_o shall_v or_o may_v chance_v a_o few_o vehement_a act_n do_v work_v more_o strong_o and_o effectual_o to_o produce_v a_o habit_n than_o many_o remiss_a which_o he_o must_v very_o well_o observe_v that_o desire_v to_o be_v one_o of_o almighty_a god_n most_o chief_a servant_n for_o he_o must_v neither_o say_v or_o think_v that_o he_o will_v do_v what_o in_o he_o be_v to_o obtain_v the_o grace_n of_o god_n and_o other_o benefit_n of_o he_o who_o do_v not_o also_o wish_v and_o withal_o rejoice_v in_o himself_o while_o those_o thing_n be_v offer_v to_o he_o by_o which_o he_o may_v be_v the_o better_o dispose_v unto_o they_o see_v these_o be_v so_o necessary_a for_o the_o discern_a of_o vice_n and_o increase_n of_o virtue_n to_o the_o obtain_n of_o perfect_a charity_n in_o which_o consist_v all_o the_o good_a and_o perfect_a obedience_n of_o god_n therefore_o to_o this_o end_n it_o be_v very_o expedient_a to_o keep_v the_o will_v very_o firm_a and_o steadfast_a in_o the_o desire_n and_o love_n of_o god_n and_o hatred_n of_o evil_n to_o which_o purpose_n it_o will_v not_o be_v a_o little_a available_a to_o ponder_v the_o consideration_n and_o reason_n whereof_o book_n exhort_v to_o devotion_n be_v full_a namely_o why_o god_n be_v to_o be_v love_v and_o evil_a detest_a but_o yet_o let_v not_o this_o be_v forget_v to_o the_o end_n that_o we_o may_v ever_o be_v restrain_v with_o the_o bridle_n of_o fear_n from_o fall_v into_o presumptuous_a sin_n that_o albeit_o one_o may_v have_v gain_v most_o excellent_a habit_n of_o virtue_n yet_o be_v he_o not_o thereby_o secure_v that_o he_o have_v get_v the_o true_a good_a namely_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n which_o albeit_o he_o assure_o have_v whilst_o he_o have_v these_o thing_n which_o we_o here_o speak_v of_o and_o shall_v speak_v yet_o can_v we_o never_o natural_o know_v when_o we_o have_v these_o thing_n in_o the_o manner_n that_o the_o will_n of_o god_n be_v we_o shall_v have_v they_o and_o so_o we_o can_v be_v certain_a that_o we_o have_v obtain_v the_o grace_n and_o favour_n of_o god_n but_o it_o be_v very_o apparent_a and_o a_o principal_a sign_n we_o have_v gain_v it_o be_v when_o we_o so_o in_o our_o mind_n handle_v the_o virtue_n whereof_o we_o have_v get_v the_o habit_n as_o we_o think_v of_o other_o man_n virtue_n namely_o that_o thence_o our_o heart_n shall_v not_o be_v more_o extol_v but_o bless_v god_n and_o give_v he_o thanks_o who_o be_v the_o author_n of_o every_o good_a gift_n and_o equal_o to_o rejoice_v for_o these_o as_o well_o as_o the_o other_o for_o the_o praise_n and_o glory_n of_o god_n which_o be_v equal_o manifest_v in_o the_o one_o and_o the_o other_o to_o conclude_v that_o we_o may_v not_o cast_v the_o salt_n of_o our_o sloth_n upon_o the_o thing_n that_o be_v here_o write_v it_o must_v be_v consider_v that_o if_o any_o seem_v to_o endeavour_v to_o gain_v some_o of_o the_o thing_n which_o be_v here_o say_v that_o aught_o to_o be_v do_v and_o can_v attain_v they_o he_o may_v know_v that_o this_o befall_v he_o because_o he_o endeavour_v not_o to_o obtain_v another_o thing_n which_o be_v here_o write_v that_o he_o ought_v to_o procure_v as_o for_o the_o point_n if_o any_o do_v much_o labour_n not_o to_o feel_v the_o injury_n that_o be_v do_v he_o and_o yet_o do_v not_o strong_o endeavour_v to_o come_v to_o a_o detestation_n and_o hatred_n of_o himself_o of_o which_o we_o have_v here_o write_v in_o his_o place_n he_o shall_v profit_n very_o little_a at_o all_o for_o god_n suffer_v not_o nor_o regard_v a_o man_n endeavour_n and_o labour_n for_o one_o virtue_n with_o slothfulness_n and_o neglect_n towards_o another_o the_o 2._o thing_n i_o propose_v in_o the_o first_o part_n of_o thus_o last_o day_n journey_n of_o the_o soul_n to_o be_v discourse_v be_v a_o particular_a view_n or_o such_o furniture_n as_o be_v requisite_a for_o the_o repair_n of_o man_n soul_n slaughter_v and_o ruin_v by_o sin_n this_o discourse_n may_v be_v without_o bound_n if_o we_o shall_v measure_v it_o according_a to_o man_n lymitlesse_a corruption_n but_o the_o true_a servant_n of_o god_n who_o by_o the_o former_a general_a instruction_n be_v come_v unto_o the_o knowledge_n of_o those_o many_o murder_n sin_n have_v commit_v in_o the_o soul_n and_o how_o much_o he_o be_v enable_v to_o help_v himself_o by_o such_o instrument_n as_o he_o have_v receive_v from_o god_n call_v first_o upon_o god_n for_o help_v by_o which_o mean_n he_o may_v use_v this_o power_n and_o those_o instrument_n with_o such_o other_o as_o be_v necessary_a to_o this_o purpose_n it_o follow_v now_o that_o he_o exercise_v himself_o in_o such_o thing_n as_o be_v very_o necessary_a to_o that_o reparation_n first_o therefore_o he_o must_v be_v exercise_v in_o root_a uppe_o sin_n in_o the_o soul_n that_o be_v about_o to_o perform_v any_o duty_n to_o god_n there_o may_v be_v nothing_o so_o much_o to_o offend_v the_o eye_n of_o so_o great_a a_o majesty_n so_o this_o be_v do_v he_o must_v deck_v himself_o with_o such_o habit_n and_o virtue_n as_o may_v make_v he_o
it_o behold_v now_o we_o be_v at_o the_o point_n of_o death_n for_o at_o that_o time_n sensuality_n have_v no_o life_n but_o be_v whole_o subject_v the_o miserable_a reason_n â—is_n not_o then_o mistress_n as_o it_o ought_v but_o compassionats_n sensuality_n as_o her_o sister_n albeit_o adversant_a the_o devil_n who_o be_v never_o a_o sleep_n endeavour_n by_o all_o his_o michination_n to_o inflame_v we_o that_o we_o may_v the_o more_o feel_v the_o persecution_n yet_o god_n who_o be_v faithful_a 10._o 1_o cor._n 10._o will_v not_o suffer_v we_o to_o be_v tempt_v above_o our_o strength_n now_o it_o behove_v we_o to_o see_v what_o on_o our_o behalse_a we_o can_v and_o aught_o to_o do_v with_o god_n assistance_n in_o such_o a_o danger_n namely_o that_o the_o injury_n be_v so_o present_a &_o never_o unto_o we_o as_o much_o as_o be_v in_o we_o for_o some_o short_a time_n we_o forget_v the_o same_o and_o for_o this_o time_n to_o lift_v up_o the_o eye_n of_o our_o consideration_n to_o think_v on_o those_o innumerable_a riches_n contain_v in_o the_o love_n of_o god_n towards_o we_o and_o with_o this_o consideration_n we_o incline_v the_o will_n to_o love_n and_o desire_v the_o infinite_a good_a of_o this_o love_n so_o as_o now_o love_v and_o desire_v so_o great_a riches_n we_o turn_v ourselves_o and_o incline_v our_o will_n to_o the_o present_a persecution_n before_o as_o it_o be_v forget_v and_o repute_v it_o to_o be_v so_o necessary_a as_o we_o have_v say_v to_o obtain_v the_o riches_n of_o god_n love_n we_o desire_v the_o same_o with_o all_o our_o might_n enforce_v the_o will_n with_o all_o our_o power_n to_o desire_v it_o thus_o no_o doubt_n the_o will_n be_v mollify_v and_o strenghthn_v with_o the_o reward_n of_o the_o love_n of_o god_n and_o future_a glory_n will_v be_v most_o ready_a to_o be_v incline_v and_o draw_v to_o accept_v such_o persecution_n which_o before_o be_v so_o terrible_a in_o our_o eye_n and_o if_o we_o exercise_v this_o often_o we_o shall_v be_v so_o accustom_v to_o that_o which_o be_v good_a that_o what_o before_o seem_v above_o nature_n we_o shall_v now_o with_o great_a delight_n perform_v and_o this_o will_v be_v again_o and_o again_o consider_v because_o it_o be_v of_o great_a moment_n aswell_o to_o the_o whole_a chapter_n as_o that_o of_o humility_n patience_n affection_n of_o the_o soul_n as_o also_o that_o of_o the_o love_n of_o ourselves_o and_o again_o to_o any_o difficulty_n or_o labour_n inward_a or_o outward_a &_o to_o conclude_v to_o the_o whole_a method_n of_o serve_v god_n if_o i_o shall_v add_v more_o reason_n why_o we_o shall_v hate_v ourselves_o i_o may_v tell_v you_o 4_o that_o consideration_n of_o shortness_n of_o life_n be_v very_o effectual_a hereto_o for_o see_v so_o small_a time_n to_o tarry_v why_o shall_v we_o fall_v in_o love_n with_o ourselves_o 5_o the_o consideration_n of_o the_o evil_n of_o this_o life_n in_o the_o world_n we_o shall_v have_v pressive_a and_o trouble_v and_o all_o thing_n that_o may_v just_o make_v we_o hate_v ourselves_o 6_o consideration_n of_o our_o danger_n 7_o the_o consideration_n of_o they_o that_o have_v perish_v by_o too_o much_o love_n of_o themselves_o 8_o the_o consideration_n of_o our_o servitude_n whilst_o we_o be_v here_o 9_o the_o consideration_n of_o the_o world_n ingratitude_n and_o last_o the_o consideration_n of_o the_o forgetfulness_n of_o ourselves_o and_o of_o god_n all_o which_o may_v be_v strong_a motive_n against_o all_o self_n love_n which_o be_v the_o best_a of_o all_o grace_n &_o move_v we_o to_o this_o holy_a hatred_n as_o the_o goal_n of_o goodness_n 3_o how_o true_a charity_n &_o hatred_n of_o ourselves_o do_v stand_v together_o i_o brief_o show_v thus_o they_o not_o only_o stand_v together_o but_o so_o stand_v together_o as_o we_o shall_v never_o be_v able_a to_o climb_v to_o the_o top_n of_o charity_n except_o we_o hate_v ourselves_o for_o assoon_o as_o one_o do_v hate_v himself_o as_o we_o have_v say_v and_o not_o before_o he_o than_o have_v all_o the_o love_n which_o he_o ought_v to_o have_v towards_o himself_o and_o which_o be_v most_o profitable_a for_o he_o as_o also_o which_o god_n will_v that_o he_o shall_v have_v that_o be_v to_o say_v he_o than_o have_v the_o love_n of_o god_n and_o of_o virtue_n and_o celestial_a glory_n and_o all_o thing_n that_o do_v conduce_v unto_o it_o and_o this_o love_n suffer_v not_o the_o co-partnership_n of_o any_o vice_n albeit_o we_o be_v incline_v to_o it_o and_o so_o deny_v ourselves_o and_o hate_v ourselves_o and_o take_v from_o ourselves_o the_o evil_n that_o we_o desire_v we_o be_v fill_v with_o the_o true_a divine_a love_n which_o otherwise_o we_o can_v never_o enjoy_v 3_o exercise_n be_v to_o adorn_v our_o soul_n with_o virtue_n necessary_a to_o the_o beauty_n of_o the_o soul_n he_o be_v say_v to_o have_v a_o beautiful_a soul_n that_o have_v his_o natural_a appetite_n conform_v with_o sanctify_a reason_n and_o the_o law_n of_o god_n and_o this_o conformity_n be_v nothing_o else_o but_o a_o certain_a troop_n of_o virtue_n whilst_o every_o one_o be_v place_v in_o his_o due_a rank_n in_o the_o soul_n make_v it_o beautiful_a and_o direct_v it_o as_o be_v convenient_a for_o the_o great_a dignity_n thereof_o mitigate_a the_o false_a and_o evil_a concupiscence_n which_o cleave_v unto_o it_o by_o sin_n and_o dispose_v it_o to_o serve_v he_o and_o without_o contradiction_n obey_v his_o will_n that_o create_v it_o it_o be_v not_o amiss_o then_o that_o we_o know_v what_o course_n must_v be_v take_v to_o come_v to_o these_o virtue_n as_o much_o therefore_o as_o maybe_o gather_v from_o the_o sacred_a word_n itself_o and_o writing_n of_o the_o godly_a belong_v hereunto_o we_o will_v reduce_v all_o those_o thing_n wherein_o it_o be_v necessary_a that_o he_o be_v employ_v who_o will_v acquire_v so_o great_a beauty_n of_o soul_n unto_o three_o 1_o that_o he_o beg_v help_v of_o one_o more_o potent_a than_o himself_o see_v all_o our_o power_n arc_n too_o weak_a to_o reach_v such_o high_a thing_n and_o to_o this_o serve_v prayer_n 2_o that_o with_o many_o act_n as_o with_o the_o matter_n he_o build_v these_o habit_n of_o virtue_n 3_o that_o as_o with_o a_o bridle_n he_o may_v restrain_v or_o wary_o lead_v and_o guide_v the_o natural_a affection_n which_o be_v find_v in_o every_o man_n call_v of_o divine_n and_o philosopher_n joy_n sorrow_n hope_n and_o fear_n 1_o of_o prayer_n our_o most_o high_a and_o omnipotent_a god_n will_v have_v we_o stand_v in_o need_n of_o his_o supernatural_a help_n see_v the_o good_a thing_n unto_o which_o he_o have_v create_v we_o be_v supernatural_a and_o he_o will_v also_o that_o we_o shall_v call_v upon_o he_o for_o they_o not_o but_o that_o he_o more_o desire_v to_o give_v we_o they_o then_o we_o to_o ask_v they_o of_o he_o but_o that_o we_o may_v possess_v that_o with_o great_a glory_n which_o we_o obtain_v with_o great_a labour_n of_o desire_n beside_o he_o will_v have_v we_o ask_v that_o as_o importunate_a suitor_n we_o shall_v more_o frequent_o present_v ourselves_o before_o he_o and_o so_o by_o often_o present_v ourselves_o in_o his_o presence_n may_v the_o better_o come_v into_o the_o knowledge_n of_o he_o for_o by_o how_o much_o we_o have_v the_o thing_n present_a before_o we_o by_o so_o much_o the_o knowledge_n of_o it_o make_v the_o great_a impression_n and_o the_o better_a we_o know_v his_o greatness_n and_o supereminent_a quality_n we_o shall_v the_o more_o rejoice_n in_o he_o and_o the_o more_o we_o shall_v rejoice_v in_o he_o and_o know_v he_o the_o more_o we_o shall_v love_v he_o and_o by_o how_o much_o as_o we_o shall_v know_v he_o and_o love_v he_o more_o by_o so_o much_o more_o will_v the_o beam_n of_o truth_n shine_v in_o our_o soul_n and_o to_o conclude_v by_o how_o much_o as_o this_o light_n together_o with_o his_o love_n shall_v shine_v in_o we_o by_o so_o much_o more_o whatsoever_o be_v not_o good_a or_o tend_v to_o god_n shall_v be_v nothing_o repute_v in_o our_o eye_n and_o by_o so_o much_o more_o shall_v we_o hate_v that_o be_v evil_a embrace_v all_o virtue_n and_o come_v near_o unto_o god_n from_o whence_o it_o be_v clear_a by_o many_o reason_n that_o prayer_n be_v a_o sure_a journey_n to_o obtain_v whatsoever_o be_v necessary_a for_o we_o and_o that_o it_o lead_v we_o to_o the_o height_n of_o love_n to_o which_o we_o be_v bear_v therefore_o we_o must_v esteem_v this_o prayer_n or_o that_o necessity_n of_o prayer_n as_o a_o pledge_n which_o god_n have_v take_v of_o we_o whereby_o to_o retain_v we_o with_o he_o for_o he_o know_v well_o how_o much_o good_a come_v unto_o we_o by_o his_o presence_n and_o how_o assure_o we_o will_v forget_v he_o if_o we_o have_v no_o need_n
of_o ourselves_o which_o be_v like_o dry_a wood_n it_o will_v as_o tinder_n set_v on_o fire_n all_o our_o work_n but_o be_v divorce_v from_o this_o love_n of_o ourselves_o the_o love_n of_o god_n will_v stand_v in_o need_n of_o the_o bellows_n of_o many_o strong_a labour_n and_o action_n to_o keep_v it_o in_o for_o scarce_o shall_v we_o find_v any_o flame_n of_o this_o love_n but_o rather_o seem_v in_o ourselves_o to_o be_v key_n cold_a and_o therefore_o by_o many_o strong_a act_n must_v we_o succour_v it_o by_o the_o consideration_n of_o those_o thing_n which_o according_a to_o the_o love_n of_o ourselves_o seem_v sweet_a unto_o we_o namely_o by_o the_o consideration_n of_o the_o great_a good_a of_o glory_n and_o comfort_n which_o we_o hope_v for_o in_o time_n to_o come_v and_o again_o that_o so_o we_o shall_v escape_v those_o great_a evil_n which_o we_o do_v natural_o abhor_v and_o hate_v and_o by_o such_o breathe_n &_o blast_n of_o the_o love_n of_o ourselves_o we_o may_v believe_v that_o some_o little_a flame_n of_o the_o love_n of_o god_n may_v be_v enkindle_v and_o by_o little_a and_o little_o gather_v strength_n &_o increase_n according_a to_o the_o proportion_n of_o our_o endeavour_n be_v help_v thereunto_o by_o the_o love_n of_o god_n yet_o it_o be_v very_o expedient_a that_o we_o endeavour_v earnest_o to_o have_v strong_a act_n in_o all_o the_o thing_n afforesaid_a whereby_o that_o so_o vehement_a a_o love_n of_o god_n may_v be_v produce_v in_o we_o as_o that_o be_v wont_a to_o be_v which_o we_o have_v before_o as_o a_o love_n compound_v of_o the_o love_n of_o ourselves_o which_o be_v great_a vehement_a and_o contentful_a together_o with_o the_o love_n of_o god_n which_o be_v but_o small_a and_o very_o weak_a and_o this_o we_o must_v labour_v to_o do_v till_o we_o find_v so_o great_a sweetness_n in_o be_v deliver_v from_o our_o strait_n and_o misery_n only_o to_o the_o end_n that_o we_o may_v the_o better_o serve_v god_n as_o we_o be_v wont_a to_o feel_v while_o we_o desire_v the_o same_o be_v induce_v thereunto_o only_o that_o we_o may_v be_v deliver_v from_o the_o anguish_n that_o do_v so_o tire_v us._n he_o that_o shall_v dot_v thus_o may_v worthy_o conceive_v that_o he_o have_v the_o true_a and_o sincere_a love_n of_o god_n which_o we_o ought_v ever_o to_o seek_v &_o beg_v this_o be_v i_o confess_v a_o great_a alteration_n and_o the_o change_n of_o the_o right_a hand_n of_o the_o high_a happy_a be_v he_o that_o taste_v it_o in_o the_o earth_n for_o now_o he_o begin_v to_o dwell_v among_o those_o fresh_a pasture_n which_o he_o shall_v more_o plentiful_o enjoy_v in_o eternal_a glory_n but_o it_o be_v very_o needful_a herein_o that_o while_o we_o pray_v we_o be_v very_o attentive_a in_o this_o until_o we_o be_v habituate_v and_o accustom_v to_o such_o kind_n of_o pray_v whereby_o we_o may_v feel_v in_o all_o our_o postulation_n and_o demand_n whether_o the_o love_n of_o god_n or_o the_o love_n of_o the_o thing_n which_o we_o ask_v have_v move_v we_o to_o ask_v it_o of_o god_n nor_o by_o any_o mean_n to_o pass_v from_o one_o demand_n until_o we_o have_v incline_v the_o will_n to_o accept_v it_o on_o that_o condition_n because_o god_n will_v have_v we_o to_o ask_v and_o in_o the_o same_o to_o serve_v he_o and_o if_o herein_o we_o be_v negligent_a there_o be_v no_o hope_n of_o grow_v in_o any_o good_a habit_n of_o pray_v as_o for_o the_o point_n we_o say_v our_o father_n which_o be_v in_o heaven_n hallow_a be_v thy_o name_n in_o this_o first_o petition_n we_o ask_v that_o the_o name_n of_o god_n in_o we_o may_v be_v have_v in_o estimation_n and_o love_n without_o any_o mixture_n of_o earthly_a thing_n to_o be_v love_v with_o it_o this_o be_v so_o high_a and_o sovereign_a a_o petition_n that_o whosoever_o obtain_v it_o be_v bless_v even_o on_o the_o earth_n therefore_o if_o any_o do_v understand_v it_o and_o love_n himself_o undoubted_o he_o will_v desire_v and_o seek_v so_o great_a a_o good_a to_o himself_o and_o with_o great_a affection_n he_o will_v desire_v it_o and_o it_o be_v a_o good_a postulation_n and_o desire_n yet_o must_v not_o we_o content_v ourselves_o herewith_o nor_o let_v we_o by_o any_o mean_n pass_v to_o any_o other_o petition_n or_o demand_v until_o we_o have_v obetine_v this_o motive_n and_o with_o all_o let_v we_o remember_v what_o the_o son_n of_o god_n say_v 18._o luk._n 18._o we_o must_v pray_v always_o 2_o in_o this_o three_o exercise_n we_o must_v beside_o prayer_n labour_v to_o build_v up_o these_o habit_n of_o virtue_n in_o we_o by_o many_o act_n of_o virtue_n which_o virtue_n can_v no_o other_o where_o be_v have_v but_o from_o the_o most_o precious_a mine_n and_o vein_n of_o the_o passion_n of_o christ_n it_o be_v true_a that_o many_o excellent_a thing_n touch_v the_o sovereignty_n of_o virtue_n be_v write_v in_o many_o book_n but_o happy_a be_v he_o that_o read_v and_o learn_v they_o in_o the_o book_n of_o life_n which_o be_v jesus_n christ_n the_o fountain_n of_o all_o wisdom_n in_o heaven_n and_o earth_n learn_v of_o i_o 11._o matth._n 11._o say_v that_o wisdom_n as_o of_o the_o most_o learned_a book_n and_o what_o shall_v we_o learn_v but_o a_o few_o thing_n as_o well_o lest_o they_o shall_v be_v forget_v as_o for_o that_o they_o be_v such_o that_o be_v learn_v we_o need_v no_o more_o learning_n we_o be_v full_a of_o true_a wisdom_n learn_v therefore_o of_o i_o that_o i_o be_o meek_a and_o lowly_a in_o heart_n let_v no_o man_n then_o think_v he_o can_v be_v enrich_v with_o virtue_n except_o he_o learn_v of_o i_o etc._n etc._n 1_o of_o humility_n a_o virtue_n that_o climb_v so_o high_a and_o dive_v so_o low_a that_o the_o learned_a have_v make_v sundry_a ladder_n to_o come_v unto_o it_o not_o let_v any_o think_v to_o come_v to_o this_o heaven_n of_o humility_n without_o these_o ladder_n but_o these_o be_v so_o plentiful_o handle_v by_o other_o heave_v they_o and_o pass_v on_o to_o the_o business_n itself_o in_o my_o opinion_n whosoever_o shall_v ascend_v by_o these_o degree_n shall_v soon_o come_v to_o the_o knowledge_n of_o all_o thing_n and_o shall_fw-mi clear_o see_v that_o he_o be_v nothing_o of_o himself_o save_v nothing_o indeed_o and_o that_o all_o whatsoever_o be_v any_o thing_n be_v god_n himself_o and_o that_o see_v it_o be_v so_o he_o do_v worthy_o exact_a of_o we_o unless_o we_o will_v commit_v these_o or_o some_o worse_a crime_n to_o bestow_v all_o our_o thought_n and_o all_o our_o power_n by_o all_o mean_n to_o magnify_v he_o who_o that_o all_o be_v that_o be_v any_o thing_n beside_o humility_n be_v such_o a_o virtue_n as_o wish_v nothing_o that_o be_v not_o its_o own_o require_v that_o the_o whole_a world_n shall_v handle_v and_o esteem_v it_o for_o that_o it_o be_v i._o aâ—_n nothing_o and_o that_o man_n heart_n shall_v not_o for_o the_o least_o space_n of_o time_n that_o be_v be_v employ_v in_o esteem_v that_o for_o something_o which_o indeed_o be_v nothing_o or_o which_o be_v a_o vessel_n of_o all_o iniquity_n worse_o than_o nothing_o and_o such_o be_v every_o sinful_a man_n that_o therefore_o this_o may_v be_v firm_a and_o fix_v in_o every_o man_n heart_n by_o many_o act_n of_o good_a consideration_n in_o that_o consist_v the_o key_n of_o humility_n in_o desire_v that_o
those_o which_o injury_n we_o and_o such_o as_o see_v we_o so_o injury_v may_v think_v that_o we_o do_v not_o suffer_v this_o out_o of_o humility_n but_o because_o we_o can_v avoid_v it_o for_o we_o can_v esteem_v it_o any_o great_a thing_n when_o we_o desire_v to_o be_v ill_o entreat_v with_o despite_n if_o we_o think_v that_o those_o who_o see_v it_o do_v judge_v that_o we_o suffer_v it_o out_o of_o humility_n not_o offend_v nor_o feel_v the_o injury_n for_o he_o that_o will_v please_v god_n must_v endeavour_n to_o be_v account_v vile_a and_o abject_a not_o of_o a_o humble_a and_o modest_a mind_n this_o be_v that_o which_o i_o say_v that_o we_o shall_v so_o desire_v to_o be_v account_v vile_a of_o other_o and_o to_o be_v handle_v as_o abject_n that_o we_o shall_v also_o wish_v that_o they_o shall_v altogether_o think_v we_o be_v so_o handle_v against_o our_o will_n and_o that_o we_o take_v it_o very_o hardly_o and_o be_v much_o offend_v that_o we_o be_v so_o esteem_v and_o so_o deal_v withal_o when_o in_o truth_n we_o rejoice_v for_o the_o holy_a hatred_n of_o ourselves_o which_o we_o find_v to_o be_v in_o us._n yet_o we_o must_v observe_v that_o if_o any_o man_n be_v of_o so_o great_a virtue_n that_o use_v no_o violence_n to_o himself_o he_o can_v wish_v that_o other_o man_n esteem_v he_o vile_a and_o not_o humble_a such_o a_o man_n for_o the_o edification_n of_o his_o neighbour_n may_v wish_v that_o they_o do_v judge_v that_o he_o suffer_v such_o injury_n with_o joy_n and_o not_o against_o his_o will_n but_o for_o the_o love_n of_o god_n and_o humility_n and_o that_o shall_v be_v very_o heroical_a humility_n and_o such_o as_o the_o son_n of_o god_n will_v have_v we_o learn_v of_o he_o but_o see_v this_o humility_n be_v to_o be_v learn_v of_o our_o redeemer_n let_v we_o set_v it_o before_o our_o eye_n as_o the_o rude_a and_o unskilful_a in_o paint_v use_n to_o put_v the_o example_n which_o in_o learning_n they_o desire_v to_o imitate_v this_o humility_n of_o the_o son_n of_o god_n be_v inexplicable_a yet_o will_v we_o according_a to_o our_o gross_a conceit_n endeavour_v to_o know_v it_o consider_v that_o when_o he_o be_v god_n infinite_a and_o man_n most_o perfect_a he_o will_v and_o with_o great_a joy_n do_v choose_v to_o be_v esteem_v and_o entreat_v for_o the_o most_o abject_a thing_n in_o the_o world_n for_o thy_o sake_n suffer_v all_o kind_n of_o injury_n and_o contumely_n from_o the_o day_n of_o his_o birth_n until_o he_o suffer_v most_o ignominious_a death_n and_o all_o these_o thing_n not_o for_o that_o they_o be_v necessary_a for_o he_o but_o that_o we_o who_o have_v so_o great_a necessity_n may_v learn_v the_o manner_n of_o humble_v ourselves_o which_o consist_v in_o these_o say_a thing_n whence_o we_o may_v see_v how_o reprehensible_a he_o be_v who_o do_v not_o learn_v this_o humility_n which_o so_o great_a a_o master_n do_v teach_v and_o which_o he_o exercise_v in_o himself_o albeit_o not_o for_o himself_o but_o that_o we_o may_v learn_v of_o he_o therefore_o the_o humility_n of_o our_o lord_n be_v know_v every_o one_o ought_v to_o frame_v in_o his_o heart_n another_o humility_n to_o the_o imitation_n and_o likeness_n hereof_o not_o that_o he_o be_v command_v to_o come_v to_o the_o equality_n thereof_o for_o albeit_o all_o the_o creature_n do_v desire_v and_o rejoice_v to_o be_v account_v vile_a and_o to_o be_v most_o unworthy_o entreat_v out_o of_o the_o mean_a conceit_n they_o have_v of_o themselves_o from_o the_o true_a knowledge_n of_o their_o own_o abiectnesse_n and_o baseness_n and_o if_o all_o the_o humility_n of_o all_o these_o be_v in_o one_o man_n yet_o this_o humility_n be_v nothing_o compare_v with_o our_o redeemer_n humility_n for_o many_o way_n there_o be_v infinite_a difference_n betwixt_o his_o majesty_n and_o our_o nullity_n every_o of_o which_o put_v infinite_a difference_n betwixt_o the_o excellency_n of_o his_o humility_n and_o all_o the_o humility_n of_o all_o the_o saint_n of_o god_n in_o one_o &_o therefore_o i_o say_v that_o we_o must_v frame_v our_o humility_n of_o the_o imitation_n and_o likeness_n of_o he_o some_o may_v happy_o admire_v that_o god_n exact_v of_o we_o so_o great_a contempt_n of_o ourselves_o and_o humility_n and_o which_o cost_v he_o so_o dear_a while_o by_o his_o example_n he_o teach_v it_o us._n therefore_o we_o may_v observe_v that_o it_o be_v his_o will_n so_o to_o do_v because_o indeed_o it_o be_v good_a for_o we_o and_o because_o we_o have_v no_o good_a thing_n of_o ourselves_o but_o all_o from_o his_o bountiful_a hand_n who_o we_o ought_v to_o glorify_v for_o it_o and_o not_o ourselves_o and_o it_o be_v not_o only_o good_a for_o we_o but_o most_o necessary_a for_o such_o humility_n be_v a_o perfect_a medicine_n for_o our_o deadly_a infirmity_n which_o proceed_v from_o pride_n nor_o shall_v ever_o any_o man_n be_v perfect_o cure_v of_o it_o but_o by_o humility_n so_o much_o as_o shall_v want_v of_o the_o perfect_a cure_n of_o it_o so_o much_o shall_v want_v of_o the_o cleanse_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o how_o much_o we_o want_v of_o the_o cleanse_n of_o the_o soul_n so_o much_o shall_v we_o want_v of_o the_o benefit_n and_o grace_n of_o god_n and_o so_o much_o also_o shall_v we_o be_v less_o his_o and_o if_o any_o ask_v how_o one_o may_v rejoice_v to_o be_v agitate_a and_o turmoil_v with_o contempt_n and_o wrong_n see_v it_o be_v a_o thing_n difficult_a to_o desire_v it_o i_o answer_v that_o it_o may_v be_v do_v out_o of_o the_o great_a consideration_n of_o this_o humility_n of_o the_o son_n of_o god_n and_o the_o benefit_n arise_v unto_o we_o by_o it_o and_o chief_o because_o we_o be_v so_o make_v able_a that_o god_n may_v have_v joy_n in_o we_o and_o a_o acceptable_a service_n of_o us._n but_o there_o be_v no_o disceete_a man_n will_v cast_v that_o from_o he_o whereby_o the_o will_n of_o god_n may_v be_v fufil_v together_o with_o a_o man_n own_o honour_n and_o inestimable_a and_o perpetual_a profit_n to_o himself_o and_o that_o with_o the_o labour_n of_o a_o most_o short_a time_n but_o that_o we_o may_v in_o reason_n answer_v this_o objection_n we_o must_v note_v that_o to_o frame_v so_o worthy_a a_o humility_n it_o be_v necessary_a as_o in_o the_o six_o instruction_n that_o we_o often_o incline_v our_o will_n and_o again_o that_o we_o often_o nay_o daily_a desire_n with_o joy_n this_o so_o precious_a a_o abjection_n and_o contempt_n for_o how_o worthy_o ought_v he_o to_o be_v despise_v who_o so_o often_o be_v find_v a_o traitor_n against_o his_o eternal_a lord_n and_o saviour_n by_o sin_n betray_v his_o soul_n to_o satan_n and_o take_v it_o from_o he_o who_o of_o his_o only_a goodness_n will_v die_v for_o it_o sure_o if_o serious_o we_o think_v on_o these_o thing_n with_o much_o grief_n shall_v we_o take_v honour_n if_o they_o be_v offer_v to_o we_o see_v we_o clear_o know_v that_o hence_o it_o may_v fall_v out_o that_o it_o may_v be_v a_o hindrance_n to_o we_o of_o most_o excellent_a good_a thing_n which_o by_o the_o contempt_n of_o ourselves_o and_o true_a humility_n be_v the_o way_n to_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n do_v undouted_o remain_v for_o us._n yet_o notwithstanding_o in_o some_o case_n a_o man_n may_v wish_v to_o be_v honour_v and_o esteem_v namely_o if_o he_o have_v the_o eye_n of_o his_o intention_n to_o some_o service_n of_o god_n which_o he_o believe_v or_o see_v may_v by_o such_o honour_n be_v perform_v but_o even_o in_o that_o case_n also_o he_o must_v desire_v with_o great_a caution_n fear_n and_o some_o grief_n to_o be_v honour_v now_o there_o be_v a_o certain_a evil_a fruit_n and_o venomous_a hear_v be_v which_o grow_v plentiful_o in_o the_o world_n over-growing_a and_o indeed_o overthrow_v all_o virtue_n but_o chief_o hinder_v the_o increase_n &_o growth_n of_o humility_n namely_o vain_a glory_n the_o mother_n of_o all_o evil_a which_o infect_v all_o that_o be_v good_a in_o the_o whole_a man_n and_o little_a or_o no_o vain_a glory_n at_o all_o will_v offer_v itself_o to_o he_o that_o have_v deny_v himself_o and_o hate_v himself_o in_o such_o sort_n as_o we_o have_v say_v for_o vain_a glory_n be_v nothing_o but_o a_o complacency_n and_o joy_n that_o one_o take_v from_o that_o which_o he_o ought_v not_o to_o take_v it_o or_o in_o that_o manner_n he_o ought_v not_o to_o take_v it_o right_o may_v one_o rejoice_v of_o the_o good_a thing_n he_o receive_v of_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n so_o far_o four_o as_o he_o see_v or_o hope_n that_o any_o service_n of_o god_n or_o benefit_n of_o his_o soul_n for_o both_o be_v one_o if_o right_o understand_v may_v arise_v thereby_o else_o it_o be_v vain_a joy_n and_o vain_a glory_n
for_o we_o take_v unto_o we_o that_o glory_n that_o be_v due_a to_o god_n alone_o or_o else_o we_o glory_v in_o ourselves_o when_o we_o shall_v glory_v in_o the_o lord_n therefore_o let_v every_o man_n suspect_v that_o it_o be_v vain_a &_o not_o spiritual_a joy_n which_o he_o take_v of_o the_o benefit_n receive_v from_o god_n while_o he_o rejoice_v not_o in_o the_o same_o manner_n consider_v the_o benefit_n which_o other_o have_v receive_v for_o albeit_o we_o ought_v fistt_v choose_v good_a thing_n for_o ourselves_o before_o other_o &_o also_o to_o rejoice_v that_o when_o it_o be_v not_o decree_v that_o we_o together_o with_o they_o shall_v obtain_v it_o it_o fall_v out_o that_o we_o have_v it_o yet_o while_o both_o we_o and_o they_o obtain_v good_a thing_n at_o the_o good_a hand_n of_o god_n the_o divine_a majesty_n do_v equal_o rejoice_v at_o both_o nor_o ought_v our_o joy_n to_o be_v any_o other_o but_o in_o god_n and_o for_o that_o his_o holy_a will_n be_v fulfil_v thus_o rejoice_v the_o spirit_n of_o the_o bless_a virgin_n in_o god_n her_o salvation_n our_o good_a god_n will_v have_v we_o so_o much_o to_o rejoice_v of_o every_o good_a thing_n we_o have_v as_o we_o know_v the_o same_o good_a to_o come_v from_o god_n and_o to_o serve_v for_o the_o service_n of_o god._n and_o when_o it_o exceed_v this_o ordination_n of_o god_n and_o go_v beyond_o these_o bound_n then_o present_o become_v it_o vain_a joy_n and_o vain_a glory_n yet_o far_o worse_a be_v the_o vain_a glory_n which_o arise_v from_o the_o good_a thing_n we_o have_v not_o but_o worst_a of_o all_o be_v that_o to_o rejoice_v at_o the_o evil_n he_o have_v commit_v so_o crafty_a be_v vain_a glory_n that_o often_o he_o who_o be_v of_o small_a virtue_n will_v yet_o think_v himself_o to_o rejoice_v in_o god_n for_o the_o good_a thing_n he_o have_v when_o as_o yet_o for_o the_o most_o part_n it_o be_v mix_v with_o vain_a glory_n therefore_o until_o one_o be_v well_o assure_v of_o his_o virtue_n and_o grace_n he_o shall_v ever_o flee_v all_o kind_n of_o complacency_n and_o joy_n while_o he_o recogitate_v the_o benefit_n of_o god_n which_o he_o have_v receive_v of_o god_n or_o hear_v of_o himself_o and_o shall_v rather_o accustom_v himself_o at_o those_o time_n to_o stand_v in_o fear_n whereby_o shall_v with_o a_o certain_a grief_n have_v vain_a glory_n in_o suspicion_n which_o hidden_o be_v wont_n to_o rise_v out_o of_o these_o thing_n therefore_o omit_v that_o worst_a kind_n of_o vain_a glory_n as_o too_o gross_a to_o be_v entertain_v of_o any_o child_n of_o god_n and_o be_v only_o in_o the_o wicked_a and_o such_o as_o desire_v not_o the_o true_a good_a we_o will_v return_v to_o the_o first_o vain_a glory_n which_o arise_v from_o that_o good_a which_o a_o man_n have_v do_v or_o hear_v of_o himself_o the_o thing_n which_o may_v easy_o disturne_v we_o from_o so_o great_a a_o evil_a be_v the_o consideration_n of_o the_o mighty_a vanity_n &_o falsity_n which_o may_v be_v find_v in_o it_o for_o there_o be_v no_o man_n that_o be_v give_v to_o virtue_n who_o do_v not_o hate_v the_o thing_n which_o be_v vain_a and_o false_a &_o so_o often_o and_o long_o may_v one_o consider_v this_o thing_n and_o that_o which_o follow_v that_o by_o much_o use_n of_o consider_v it_o he_o may_v conceive_v so_o great_a a_o hatred_n against_o this_o evil_n of_o vain_a glory_n that_o thencefourth_o it_o will_v ever_o scarce_o offer_v itself_o to_o a_o man_n and_o this_o be_v the_o consideration_n it_o be_v a_o vile_a and_o odious_a thing_n if_o any_o noble_a courtier_n shall_v esteem_v it_o for_o a_o great_a matter_n and_o shall_v boast_v of_o it_o that_o he_o have_v put_v himself_o in_o some_o small_a peril_n out_o of_o his_o love_n and_o duty_n to_o the_o king_n which_o king_n before_o that_o by_o reason_n of_o he_o and_o for_o the_o great_a love_n he_o bear_v to_o he_o have_v expose_v himself_o to_o many_o great_a danger_n and_o wound_n but_o if_o the_o same_o noble_a man_n shall_v not_o only_o esteem_v that_o small_a favour_n he_o have_v do_v for_o his_o king_n to_o who_o he_o ought_v so_o much_o very_o high_o but_o also_o boast_v of_o it_o abroad_o his_o levity_n &_o folly_n be_v worthy_a every_o where_n to_o be_v laugh_v at_o but_o yet_o this_o vanity_n of_o his_o be_v much_o more_o abominable_a if_o the_o king_n himself_o shall_v have_v bear_v all_o this_o toil_n without_o all_o help_n of_o this_o noble_a man_n and_o that_o the_o noble_a man_n shall_v have_v suffer_v that_o little_a danger_n with_o the_o great_a favour_n and_o help_v of_o the_o king_n and_o with_o great_a promise_n and_o benefit_n before_o the_o danger_n suffer_v and_o after_o that_o little_a danger_n suffer_v large_o perform_v into_o a_o vanity_n incomparable_o worse_o do_v he_o fall_v that_o follow_v vain_a glory_n for_o our_o most_o high_a god_n a_o king_n of_o incomprehensible_a majesty_n infinite_a power_n and_o glory_n out_o of_o his_o only_a goodness_n without_o any_o obligation_n behold_v our_o infinite_a necessity_n for_o our_o relief_n expose_v himself_o to_o most_o bitter_a and_o ignominious_a death_n in_o which_o business_n we_o be_v so_o far_o from_o bring_v he_o any_o help_n that_o we_o have_v not_o be_v thankful_a to_o he_o for_o it_o nay_o all_o that_o be_v with_o he_o forsake_v he_o and_o we_o do_v most_o of_o all_o forsake_v he_o through_o our_o defect_n and_o want_n albeit_o his_o divinity_n be_v now_o make_v know_v unto_o we_o much_o more_o than_o to_o any_o of_o they_o that_o forsake_v he_o see_v then_o it_o be_v so_o let_v we_o acknowledge_v how_o vain_a and_o wicked_a it_o be_v for_o any_o man_n to_o glory_n at_o the_o duty_n he_o perform_v to_o god_n omit_v in_o the_o mean_a time_n to_o glory_n in_o god_n alone_o and_o how_o much_o more_o vain_a it_o be_v for_o this_o cause_n to_o desire_v to_o be_v have_v in_o account_n with_o other_o when_o all_o that_o time_n wherein_o there_o heart_n be_v occupy_v in_o judge_v we_o to_o be_v of_o much_o worth_n they_o leave_v to_o be_v employ_v in_o esteem_v and_o praise_v god_n the_o author_n of_o all_o good_a god_n forbid_v that_o the_o heart_n which_o be_v not_o exercise_v in_o high_o esteem_v and_o praise_v the_o most_o high_a god_n to_o who_o all_o praise_n and_o glory_n be_v due_a shall_v be_v take_v up_o in_o esteem_v i_o to_o be_v of_o any_o worth_n to_o who_o no_o such_o thing_n but_o shame_n and_o confusion_n be_v due_a he_o can_v but_o be_v hold_v for_o consent_v to_o the_o crime_n who_o think_v other_o do_v occupy_v their_o mind_n in_o praise_v and_o esteem_v he_o be_v so_o vile_a in_o the_o mean_a time_n cease_v to_o magnify_v god_n for_o all_o his_o benefit_n and_o yet_o be_v neither_o ashamed_a nor_o grieve_v at_o such_o inversion_n and_o abuse_n of_o these_o thing_n and_o that_o which_o much_o increase_v our_o vanity_n be_v that_o whatsoever_o we_o do_v or_o suffer_v all_o that_o we_o perform_v be_v through_o god_n goodness_n and_o the_o bounty_n of_o his_o hand_n by_o who_o singular_a help_n we_o do_v all_o that_o we_o do_v and_o albeit_o some_o may_v say_v that_o it_o be_v to_o every_o man_n a_o thing_n glorious_a and_o of_o much_o worth_n that_o he_o accept_v this_o goodness_n of_o god_n and_o do_v not_o reject_v the_o gift_n and_o benefit_n of_o god_n and_o so_o think_v that_o hence_o he_o may_v glory_v herein_o to_o differ_v from_o the_o damn_a who_o therefore_o seem_v to_o be_v punish_v because_o they_o accept_v not_o the_o grace_n offer_v to_o this_o may_v be_v answer_v that_o there_o be_v yet_o never_o any_o combat_n with_o this_o difficulty_n and_o drive_v it_o away_o and_o so_o bring_v the_o concupiscible_a into_o a_o frank_a fruition_n and_o enjoyment_n of_o they_o but_o among_o the_o five_o passion_n of_o the_o irascible_a hope_n hold_v the_o first_o place_n which_o be_v nothing_o else_o but_o a_o motion_n towards_o the_o difficult_a good_a which_o it_o believe_v may_v be_v obtain_v or_o to_o forbid_v that_o i_o shall_v bestow_v my_o time_n and_o labour_n to_o win_v the_o favour_n of_o man_n and_o not_o rather_o in_o gain_v the_o favour_n of_o god_n god_n forbid_v that_o i_o shall_v bold_o go_v foreward_n to_o shake_v off_o the_o thing_n which_o be_v molestfull_a to_o the_o body_n and_o shall_v happy_o procure_v great_a indulgence_n of_o the_o body_n but_o more_o grievous_a loss_n of_o to_o love_n and_o that_o they_o may_v be_v delight_v in_o the_o glory_n and_o riches_n of_o our_o god_n not_o for_o the_o sweetness_n they_o perceive_v to_o be_v in_o his_o love_n not_o for_o the_o gift_n which_o either_o they_o have_v receive_v or_o hope_v to_o receive_v but_o that_o these_o be_v forget_v they_o may_v love_v he_o as_o the_o most_o worthy_a to_o have_v all_o the_o will_n of_o angel_n and_o man_n herein_o exercise_v that_o they_o may_v desire_v and_o be_v delight_v that_o his_o majesty_n have_v all_o that_o good_a which_o it_o have_v albeit_o it_o nothing_o shall_v thence_o in_o justice_n as_o when_o he_o cherish_v in_o mercy_n he_o that_o be_v such_o love_v not_o for_o that_o god_n be_v sweet_a and_o good_a yet_o love_v that_o sweetness_n and_o goodness_n because_o god_n give_v it_o and_o give_v he_o a_o mind_n more_o diligent_o to_o serve_v he_o he_o be_v not_o afraid_a at_o his_o chastisement_n but_o take_v it_o with_o that_o love_n which_o the_o pious_a and_o princely_a hand_n of_o he_o that_o lay_v in_o on_o he_o require_v he_o do_v not_o supplicate_v and_o petition_v draw_v on_o with_o desire_n or_o sweetness_n of_o the_o benefit_n desire_v but_o that_o every_o thing_n which_o may_v promote_v we_o to_o so_o great_a a_o good_a such_o as_o injury_n contempt_n persecution_n and_o the_o like_a be_v and_o on_o the_o other_o side_n if_o we_o do_v not_o mighty_o lament_v as_o often_o as_o we_o find_v any_o impediment_n to_o so_o great_a a_o good_a such_o as_o human_a favour_n and_o all_o other_o complacency_n and_o temporal_a delectation_n be_v sure_o so_o reprooveable_a be_v it_o that_o we_o do_v not_o joy_n or_o grieve_v at_o the_o thing_n we_o have_v speak_v by_o how_o much_o it_o be_v more_o better_a to_o suffer_v death_n a_o thousand_o time_n than_o the_o injury_n and_o persecution_n which_o man_n malice_n be_v wont_a to_o infer_v or_o the_o sorrow_n which_o we_o can_v feel_v while_o we_o flee_v the_o favour_n of_o man_n and_o other_o thing_n which_o be_v wont_a to_o be_v delight-some_a to_o us._n again_o that_o in_o so_o excellent_a a_o iouruey_n nothing_o may_v hinder_v we_o we_o must_v observe_v that_o if_o sometime_o for_o the_o debility_n of_o body_n or_o because_o we_o have_v not_o attain_v so_o great_a virtue_n in_o the_o soul_n as_o be_v necessary_a to_o the_o suffer_v of_o adversity_n it_o be_v necessary_a then_o that_o we_o flee_v persecution_n and_o the_o society_n of_o such_o as_o affect_v we_o with_o injury_n or_o to_o procure_v i_o some_o delicate_a and_o savoury_a thing_n that_o we_o may_v do_v that_o with_o a_o actual_a intention_n of_o great_a evil_n and_o often_o lament_v for_o that_o in_o flee_v from_o adversity_n we_o shall_v depart_v from_o that_o which_o be_v good_a which_o may_v promote_v we_o to_o so_o great_a a_o good_a as_o be_v the_o love_n of_o god_n and_o that_o take_v up_o these_o pleasant_a thing_n we_o shall_v omit_v those_o bitter_a thing_n unto_o which_o by_o the_o malice_n of_o our_o negligence_n we_o be_v oblige_v and_o we_o must_v do_v this_o with_o a_o humble_a prayer_n unto_o god_n supplicate_v his_o goodness_n to_o strengthen_v verthe_o both_o in_o body_n and_o soul_n whereby_o have_v receive_v power_n to_o resist_v our_o frailty_n for_o which_o by_o the_o defect_n of_o our_o power_n it_o be_v necessary_a for_o we_o to_o flee_v persecution_n or_o to_o take_v up_o thing_n pleasant_a unto_o we_o we_o may_v be_v without_o any_o impediment_n dispose_v to_o that_o same_o heavenly_a love_n of_o he_o and_o his_o glory_n and_o that_o we_o may_v the_o more_o clear_o know_v how_o worthy_a these_o our_o negligence_n be_v of_o reprehension_n whereby_o we_o fall_v from_o this_o precious_a love_n it_o will_v be_v to_o good_a purpose_n to_o observe_v that_o which_o we_o have_v write_v before_o of_o the_o hatred_n of_o ourselves_o which_o be_v the_o foundation_n and_o primary_n disposition_n to_o this_o love_n of_o god_n and_o because_o we_o have_v this_o give_n of_o thanks_n for_o assume_v as_o his_o own_o every_o good_a thing_n which_o be_v do_v to_o all_o other_o after_o a_o inestimable_a manner_n it_o cause_v his_o own_o proper_a good_a to_o increase_v yea_o it_o make_v the_o good_a of_o all_o other_o to_o be_v his_o own_o proper_a good_a and_o by_o so_o much_o more_o do_v his_o own_o good_a increase_n by_o how_o much_o he_o do_v more_o rejoice_v in_o the_o only_a love_n of_o god_n and_o give_v he_o thanks_n for_o all_o without_o all_o respect_n of_o such_o increase_n in_o these_o last_o word_n consist_v the_o sum_n of_o that_o which_o be_v require_v to_o make_v thanks_n acceptable_a to_o god_n and_o that_o we_o assuredâ—_n so_o do_v it_o be_v expedient_a that_o we_o be_v much_o accustom_v to_o do_v all_o that_o we_o do_v hear_v or_o see_v we_o do_v contemn_v we_o for_o it_o whether_o it_o fall_v out_o by_o any_o natural_a defect_n as_o suppose_v that_o we_o have_v not_o well_o compose_v our_o sermon_n or_o that_o we_o have_v not_o so_o apt_o speak_v or_o so_o cunning_o sing_v or_o some_o such_o other_o thing_n or_o whether_o it_o fall_v out_o upon_o some_o of_o our_o unbrideled_a motion_n as_o intemperancy_v in_o the_o gesture_n of_o the_o countenance_n or_o in_o angry_a word_n or_o the_o like_a he_o that_o love_v himself_o must_v in_o every_o one_o of_o such_o contingent_n and_o chance_n consider_v two_o point_n 1_o the_o confusion_n and_o shame_n itself_o which_o in_o case_n be_v this_o offer_v to_o he_o 2_o the_o evil_a example_n of_o judge_v ill_o of_o he_o or_o of_o imitate_v the_o same_o which_o other_o happy_o will_v draw_v from_o thence_o 1_o for_o the_o first_o namely_o confusion_n in_o such_o case_n there_o be_v wont_a to_o be_v a_o common_a refuge_n whereby_o they_o comfort_n &_o despise_v they_o according_a to_o the_o common_a custom_n of_o the_o world_n and_o will_v think_v they_o to_o be_v man_n of_o small_a virtue_n and_o worth_n and_o profitable_a for_o nothing_o all_o which_o do_v make_v up_o a_o vehement_a act_n of_o patience_n and_o humility_n whereof_o as_o be_v before_o say_v few_o man_n suffice_v to_o produce_v excellent_a habit_n albeit_o we_o which_o yet_o be_v true_a will_v not_o say_v that_o in_o every_o of_o such_o act_n which_o be_v refer_v unto_o god_n there_o be_v great_a service_n do_v unto_o he_o and_o if_o we_o be_v attentive_a there_o be_v
