infinite_a goodness_n and_o mercy_n apply_v himself_o to_o the_o dulness_n of_o the_o capacity_n of_o his_o child_n who_o without_o these_o outward_a pledge_n be_v sign_n token_n and_o remembrance_n adorn_v it_o with_o all_o virtue_n be_v a_o man_n of_o prayer_n if_o you_o desire_v to_o avoid_v all_o vain_a thought_n &_o to_o feed_v your_o soul_n with_o holy_a thought_n and_o desire_n and_o with_o â—eruent_a devotion_n be_v a_o man_n of_o prayer_n if_o you_o desire_v in_o a_o holy_a contemplation_n to_o enjoy_v the_o embrace_n of_o christ_n your_o spouse_n and_o to_o taste_v of_o the_o heavenly_a sweetness_n bountifulness_n and_o goodness_n of_o god_n which_o in_o some_o sort_n may_v be_v feel_v but_o can_v possible_o be_v utter_v be_v a_o man_n of_o prayer_n by_o which_o work_n of_o prayer_n only_o the_o heavenly_a contemplation_n and_o sweetness_n may_v be_v taste_v we_o must_v further_o know_v that_o prayer_n may_v be_v divide_v into_o three_o degree_n viz._n request_n beseechings_n &_o thankesgiving_n our_o request_n as_o s._n bernard_n say_v be_v most_o common_o apply_v about_o the_o obtain_n of_o temporal_a thing_n and_o the_o necessity_n of_o this_o life_n which_o request_v god_n approve_v of_o the_o mind_n of_o the_o asker_n do_v notwithstanding_o that_o which_o seem_v best_a to_o himself_o let_v none_o of_o the_o faithful_a therefore_o think_v that_o their_o prayer_n or_o request_n be_v little_o esteem_v for_o god_n who_o hear_v their_o prayer_n do_v not_o light_o esteem_v of_o they_o but_o before_o their_o prayer_n go_v out_o of_o their_o mouth_n he_o cause_v a_o remembrance_n to_o be_v keep_v of_o they_o and_o one_o of_o these_o two_o all_o the_o faithful_a may_v undoubted_o hope_v for_o that_o either_o god_n will_v give_v that_o which_o they_o ask_v or_o that_o which_o he_o know_v to_o be_v more_o profitable_a for_o they_o for_o we_o know_v not_o what_o to_o ask_v as_o we_o shall_v but_o god_n pardon_v our_o ignorances_n merciful_o receive_v our_o prayer_n deny_v to_o give_v we_o that_o which_o he_o know_v to_o be_v unprofitable_a for_o we_o or_o defer_v to_o give_v it_o until_o he_o know_v the_o fit_a time_n to_o bestow_v it_o our_o prayer_n therefore_o shall_v never_o be_v idle_a or_o unprofitable_a so_o that_o we_o always_o do_v that_o in_o our_o prayer_n whereof_o we_o be_v admonish_v in_o the_o 37._o psalm_n say_v delight_n thyself_o in_o the_o lord_n and_o he_o shall_v give_v thou_o thy_o heart_n desire_n and_o give_v unto_o god_n almighty_a most_o haâ—tie_a thanks_n for_o his_o most_o gracious_a and_o love_a care_n which_o he_o have_v always_o on_o thou_o that_o thou_o do_v ignorant_o desire_v that_o which_o he_o know_v to_o be_v unprofitable_a for_o thou_o he_o hear_v thy_o request_n grant_v not_o that_o which_o thou_o desire_v but_o give_v thou_o for_o it_o a_o better_a gift_n even_o as_o a_o most_o love_a father_n which_o to_o his_o child_n that_o ask_v bread_n give_v it_o most_o willing_o but_o if_o he_o ask_v a_o knife_n he_o will_v not_o give_v it_o he_o but_o rather_o break_v or_o cut_v the_o bread_n which_o he_o before_o have_v give_v he_o pray_v therefore_o in_o a_o assure_a hope_n both_o faithful_o and_o love_o pray_v instant_o and_o patient_o but_o in_o these_o request_n which_o pertain_v to_o temporal_a blessing_n as_o if_o you_o ask_v continuance_n of_o peace_n health_n of_o body_n plenty_n of_o temporal_a thing_n temperance_n of_o air_n or_o such_o like_a in_o these_o thing_n after_o your_o request_n have_v be_v faithful_o show_v forth_o unto_o god_n wait_v patient_o what_o his_o pleasure_n shall_v be_v to_o do_v in_o these_o thing_n not_o importunate_o strive_v for_o they_o because_o we_o know_v not_o but_o our_o father_n which_o be_v in_o heaven_n know_v best_a what_o be_v needful_a to_o be_v give_v unto_o we_o in_o these_o thing_n which_o he_o will_v assure_o give_v unto_o we_o but_o in_o the_o beg_n of_o spiritual_a blessing_n we_o must_v instant_o patient_o and_o importunate_o seek_v for_o they_o never_o give_v over_o till_o we_o have_v obtain_v our_o request_n as_o when_o we_o do_v beg_v the_o remission_n of_o our_o sin_n the_o grace_n of_o amendment_n of_o life_n or_o any_o other_o virtue_n pertain_v to_o our_o soul_n health_n and_o everlasting_a happiness_n where_o both_o in_o body_n and_o soul_n we_o shall_v receive_v full_a and_o perfect_a blessedness_n in_o these_o i_o say_v and_o in_o such_o like_a request_n in_o all_o humility_n trust_v only_o to_o god_n merciful_a love_n ask_v in_o faith_n strive_v against_o all_o waver_a and_o doubt_v for_o he_o be_v unworthy_a of_o any_o spiritual_a blessing_n from_o god_n who_o strive_v not_o to_o overcome_v all_o waver_a doubtfulness_n of_o god_n merciful_a love_n towards_o he_o and_o when_o he_o pray_v unto_o god_n he_o seem_v to_o tempt_v god_n when_o he_o doubt_v that_o the_o spiritual_a thing_n which_o he_o desire_v to_o obtain_v &_o which_o he_o have_v pray_v for_o shall_v not_o be_v give_v unto_o he_o therefore_o when_o thou_o praie_v for_o that_o which_o god_n both_o commend_v and_o command_v ask_v without_o doubt_v and_o thou_o shall_v assure_o obtain_v as_o in_o the_o example_n before_o show_v when_o you_o ask_v the_o remission_n of_o sin_n true_a repentance_n the_o grace_n of_o god_n holy_a spirit_n true_a christian_a virtue_n wisdom_n faith_n righteousness_n humility_n patience_n charity_n mercifulnesse_n and_o such_o like_a spiritual_a grace_n for_o god_n have_v promise_v all_o these_o command_v we_o to_o pray_v for_o they_o say_v ask_v
