this_o recall_v but_o find_v thing_n very_o different_a from_o what_o he_o expect_v when_o he_o come_v thither_o hereupon_o he_o withdraw_v himself_o to_o his_o house_n in_o the_o country_n resolve_v to_o have_v give_v he_o by_o word_n of_o mouth_n have_v he_o arrive_v at_o athens_n the_o method_n he_o proceed_v in_o be_v this_o which_o follow_v after_o a_o short_a discourse_n by_o way_n of_o preface_n to_o his_o son_n and_o fix_v the_o right_a notion_n of_o the_o subject_a he_o be_v to_o treat_v about_o he_o endeavour_v to_o beget_v in_o he_o a_o love_n of_o honesty_n by_o represent_v it_o as_o amiable_a and_o commendable_a in_o itself_o and_o agreeable_a to_o the_o nature_n and_o reason_n of_o mankind_n he_o divide_v it_o into_o four_o part_n or_o general_a head_n prudence_n justice_n fortitude_n and_o temperance_n which_o be_v usûal_o call_v the_o four_o cardinal_n virtue_n and_o discourse_n in_o order_n upon_o every_o one_o of_o they_o with_o all_o their_o several_a species_n or_o branch_n and_o the_o vice_n that_o stand_v in_o opposition_n to_o '_o they_o and_o this_o he_o do_v not_o in_o a_o dry_a and_o scholastical_a manner_n by_o inquire_v nice_o wherein_o the_o strict_a nature_n of_o the_o several_a virtue_n consist_v and_o which_o of_o their_o opposite_a vice_n they_o be_v near_o to_o which_o my_o lord_n bacon_n somewhere_o very_o ingenious_o observe_v be_v like_o a_o master_n set_v a_o boy_n a_o copy_n to_o write_v after_o without_o ever_o show_v he_o how_o he_o shall_v make_v his_o letter_n but_o by_o lay_v down_o such_o rule_n under_o each_o of_o these_o head_n as_o may_v direct_v man_n in_o the_o practice_n of_o the_o duty_n require_v of_o '_o they_o afterward_o he_o compare_v they_o with_o one_o another_o and_o show_v in_o what_o order_n they_o be_v to_o be_v perform_v by_o we_o as_o justice_z for_o example_n before_o knowledge_n fortitude_n etc._n etc._n all_o these_o virtue_n when_o take_v together_o make_v up_o the_o general_a notion_n of_o honestum_fw-la and_o when_o take_v separately_z be_v so_o many_o branch_n or_o distinct_a member_n of_o it_o but_o see_v something_o else_o beside_o virtue_n or_o honesty_n be_v necessary_o requisite_a or_o at_o least_o useful_a and_o convenient_a for_o our_o well-being_n here_o such_o as_o be_v the_o comfort_n and_o convenience_n of_o life_n viz._n riches_n glory_n honour_n success_n in_o business_n etc._n etc._n which_o be_v all_o comprehend_v under_o the_o notion_n of_o the_o word_n profit_n therefore_o in_o the_o second_o book_n he_o endeavour_n to_o show_v how_o these_o be_v to_o be_v obtain_v and_o have_v make_v it_o appear_v that_o all_o the_o advantage_n man_n enjoy_v and_o the_o evil_n they_o endure_v be_v principal_o owe_v to_o man_n themselves_o from_o thence_o he_o infer_v that_o the_o way_n whereby_o we_o may_v obtain_v the_o former_a and_o avoid_v the_o latter_a be_v to_o procure_v the_o endeavour_n of_o man_n on_o our_o side_n so_o as_o to_o have_v they_o ready_a to_o assist_v we_o upon_o occasion_n this_o he_o show_v can_v be_v do_v no_o other_o way_n than_o by_o perform_v those_o duty_n which_o honesty_n require_v of_o we_o viz._n by_o prudence_n and_o wisdom_n by_o justice_n and_o integrity_n in_o our_o word_n and_o action_n whereby_o man_n be_v draw_v to_o place_v their_o trust_n and_o confidence_n in_o we_o where_o also_o he_o particular_o show_v that_o pretend_v and_o hypocrisy_n can_v never_o get_v a_o man_n any_o last_a honour_n by_o kindness_n and_o beneficence_n courtesy_n and_o affability_n which_o beget_v in_o man_n a_o love_n and_o affection_n towards_o we_o and_o last_o by_o fortitude_n contempt_n of_o money_n etc._n etc._n which_o be_v virtue_n that_o draw_v man_n to_o wonder_n and_o admiration_n and_o make_v they_o think_v we_o person_n that_o real_o deserve_v to_o be_v promote_v but_o because_o riches_n honour_n power_n and_o the_o like_a which_o seem_v to_o be_v a_o profit_n and_o advantage_n to_o we_o may_v often_o interfere_v with_o virtue_n and_o duty_n which_o real_o be_v such_o therefore_o in_o the_o three_o book_n he_o endeavour_n to_o show_v how_o a_o good_a man_n ought_v to_o carry_v himself_o in_o such_o a_o case_n and_o make_v it_o appear_v that_o riches_n honour_n kingdom_n and_o empire_n be_v far_o from_o be_v true_o a_o advantage_n to_o any_o man_n whenever_o they_o be_v get_v by_o unlawful_a mean_n and_o that_o no_o honest_a man_n will_v do_v any_o thing_n that_o be_v contrary_a to_o conscience_n or_o honesty_n though_o sure_a to_o obtain_v even_o the_o whole_a world_n by_o it_o all_o which_o he_o build_v upon_o this_o foundation_n that_o the_o good_n of_o the_o soul_n viz._n virtue_n and_o honesty_n be_v if_o not_o the_o only_a yet_o infinite_o the_o great_a good_n which_o be_v a_o principle_n allow_v of_o by_o all_o the_o wise_a philosopher_n from_o whence_o it_o must_v follow_v that_o whoever_o part_n with_o these_o upon_o the_o account_n of_o any_o riches_n or_o other_o seem_a advantage_n be_v it_o never_o so_o great_a must_v needs_o be_v a_o loser_n for_o he_o forfeit_v a_o great_a for_o the_o sake_n of_o a_o less_o good_a and_o in_o hope_n of_o get_v a_o seem_a deprive_v himself_o of_o a_o real_a interest_n here_o he_o go_v over_o each_o of_o the_o virtue_n mention_v in_o the_o first_o book_n and_o prove_v that_o nothing_o can_v be_v a_o man_n true_a profit_n though_o it_o shall_v bring_v he_o all_o the_o appear_a advantage_n in_o the_o world_n and_o

certain_o very_o commendable_a when_o those_o who_o be_v concern_v in_o it_o only_o design_n after_o they_o be_v sate_v or_o rather_o consent_v with_o what_o they_o have_v gain_v to_o betake_v
