we_o have_v natural_o without_o god_n great_a blessing_n without_o prayer_n and_o humble_v of_o ourselves_o we_o shall_v convey_v they_o to_o posterity_n and_o although_o the_o lord_n do_v grant_v sometime_o natural_a etc._n gift_n unto_o the_o child_n of_o carnal_a and_o natural_a man_n yet_o for_o the_o most_o part_n they_o receive_v their_o natural_a vainglory_n sin_n withal_o but_o if_o the_o child_n of_o god_n by_o regeneration_n do_v see_v into_o themselves_o and_o lament_v their_o sin_n of_o generation_n pray_v that_o their_o natural_a corruption_n may_v be_v prevent_v in_o their_o posterity_n they_o shall_v see_v the_o great_a mercy_n of_o god_n in_o some_o measure_n free_v their_o posterity_n from_o their_o sin_n now_o when_o thou_o shall_v see_v such_o sin_n to_o be_v in_o thy_o child_n enter_v into_o thy_o own_o heart_n examine_v thyself_o whether_o they_o be_v not_o come_v from_o thou_o consider_v how_o just_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n may_v be_v upon_o thou_o and_o when_o thou_o will_v be_v angry_a with_o thy_o child_n have_v a_o holy_a anger_n with_o thyself_o and_o use_v this_o or_o such_o like_a meditation_n with_o thy_o own_o soul_n lord_n shall_v i_o thus_o punish_v my_o own_o sin_n and_o that_o in_o my_o child_n shall_v i_o thus_o prosecute_v the_o corruption_n of_o my_o ancestor_n nay_o i_o see_v o_o lord_n and_o prove_v that_o thou_o be_v displease_v with_o i_o for_o the_o too_o carnal_a desire_n of_o posterity_n i_o lay_v then_o in_o some_o sin_n i_o ask_v not_o this_o child_n of_o thou_o by_o prayer_n be_v merciful_a unto_o i_o o_o god_n and_o in_o thy_o good_a time_n show_v some_o pity_n upon_o child_n my_o child_n thus_o think_v when_o thou_o go_v about_o to_o correct_v the_o corruption_n of_o nature_n in_o thy_o child_n which_o he_o can_v not_o help_v arm_v thyself_o with_o prayer_n repent_v with_o jacob_n thou_o shall_v be_v so_o affect_v that_o as_o thou_o be_v desirous_a to_o draw_v thy_o child_n out_o of_o sin_n so_o yet_o to_o do_v it_o with_o the_o mild_a mean_n and_o with_o least_o rigour_n and_o one_o thing_n be_v most_o wonderful_a that_o 1_o some_o will_v teach_v their_o child_n to_o speak_v corrupt_o and_o do_v wicked_o while_o they_o be_v parent_n young_a and_o yet_o beat_v they_o for_o it_o when_o they_o be_v come_v to_o ripe_a age_n again_o some_o will_v embolden_v their_o child_n to_o practice_v iniquity_n towards_o other_o which_o when_o by_o the_o just_a judgement_n 2_o of_o god_n they_o afterward_o practice_v against_o their_o parent_n themselves_o
who_o so_o see_v not_o great_a corruption_n in_o his_o heart_n he_o see_v nothing_o yet_o the_o child_n of_o god_n may_v say_v that_o their_o heart_n be_v pure_a by_o christ_n which_o by_o faith_n purify_v they_o and_o have_v wrought_v the_o death_n of_o sin_n in_o they_o though_o some_o corruption_n remain_v in_o their_o heart_n this_o doctrine_n have_v two_o special_a use_n first_o to_o humble_v we_o second_o to_o comfort_v us._n we_o self_n have_v good_a cause_n to_o be_v humble_v see_v that_o it_o teach_v we_o that_o the_o very_a cause_n of_o all_o our_o sin_n be_v in_o ourselves_o &_o can_v be_v lay_v upon_o any_o other_o it_o be_v our_o own_o corruption_n which_o cause_v we_o to_o sin_n while_o it_o give_v place_n to_o the_o suggestion_n of_o satan_n to_o the_o policy_n of_o perverse_a man_n and_o to_o the_o temptation_n of_o our_o own_o flesh_n if_o this_o corruption_n be_v not_o in_o we_o no_o temptation_n shall_v prevail_v against_o we_o if_o this_o corruption_n be_v not_o root_v in_o our_o heart_n we_o shall_v overcome_v evil_a through_o goodness_n christ_n be_v free_a from_o all_o sin_n and_o void_a of_o all_o corruption_n therefore_o sathan_n by_o temptation_n can_v not_o prevail_v against_o he_o no_o sathan_n can_v not_o prevail_v against_o our_o first_o father_n until_o his_o hart_n through_o unbelief_n be_v corrupt_v but_o we_o through_o our_o corruption_n do_v yield_v unto_o our_o temptation_n and_o therefore_o we_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o our_o own_o sin_n that_o say_v therefore_o be_v altogether_o unsavourie_a which_o thief_n and_o other_o have_v often_o in_o their_o mouth_n when_o they_o say_v woe_n be_v to_o such_o a_o man_n or_o to_o such_o a_o woman_n that_o ever_o i_o know_v they_o for_o if_o i_o have_v never_o fall_v into_o their_o company_n i_o have_v never_o come_v to_o this_o stay_n and_o woeful_a state_n for_o albeit_o evil_a company_n may_v be_v a_o great_a occasion_n of_o their_o fall_n and_o though_o such_o man_n and_o woman_n do_v sin_n great_o in_o tempt_v they_o to_o sin_n yet_o their_o own_o corruption_n cause_v they_o to_o be_v overcome_v by_o evil_a company_n and_o therefore_o the_o cause_n of_o their_o sin_n rest_v upon_o themselves_o second_o this_o doctrine_n do_v great_o comfort_v we_o see_v â—t_z give_v assurance_n of_o victory_n against_o all_o temptation_n if_o we_o be_v renew_a in_o our_o inward_a man_n if_o our_o hart_n be_v purify_v by_o faith_n and_o if_o we_o labour_v against_o they_o by_o fly_v unto_o christ._n and_o this_o shall_v seem_v comfortable_a indeed_o if_o we_o consider_v that_o every_o man_n have_v some_o corruption_n either_o more_o or_o less_o in_o his_o heart_n according_a to_o the_o measure_n of_o his_o regeneration_n and_o again_o if_o we_o consider_v that_o the_o devil_n as_o a_o deadly_a enemy_n go_v about_o to_o overthrow_v he_o and_o to_o subvert_v his_o faith_n by_o mean_n of_o that_o corruption_n these_o thing_n if_o we_o think_v of_o it_o will_v be_v very_o comfortable_a to_o know_v that_o we_o shall_v persevere_v and_o continue_v not_o able_a final_o to_o be_v overcome_v saint_n of_o any_o temptation_n it_o will_v be_v very_o comfortable_a to_o know_v that_o the_o devil_n for_o all_o his_o fury_n be_v like_a unto_o that_o soldier_n which_o lance_v the_o imposthume_n of_o his_o enemy_n and_o preserve_v his_o life_n when_o he_o purpose_v nothingelse_a but_o to_o have_v slay_v he_o joseph_n be_v regenerate_v and_o when_o the_o temptation_n of_o his_o miâ—â—risse_n come_v into_o his_o ear_n he_o do_v fight_v against_o they_o flee_v unto_o christ_n and_o have_v a_o good_a issue_n of_o his_o temptation_n david_n contrariwise_o though_o in_o part_n regenerate_v and_o true_o renew_v yet_o when_o the_o like_a temptation_n be_v offer_v he_o yield_v and_o be_v overcome_v because_o he_o look_v not_o unto_o his_o heart_n disinherit_v not_o his_o own_o weakness_n set_v not_o the_o lord_n for_o the_o time_n before_o his_o eye_n flee_v not_o unto_o christ_n nor_o fight_v not_o courageous_o himself_o against_o it_o therefore_o in_o what_o measure_n we_o be_v regenerate_v in_o what_o measure_n we_o unto_o our_o regeneration_n do_v add_v the_o fear_n of_o god_n for_o the_o purge_n of_o our_o heart_n and_o a_o distrust_n of_o temptation_n our_o weakness_n to_o drive_v we_o unto_o christ_n in_o that_o measure_n shall_v we_o withstand_v all_o temptation_n and_o â—s_v we_o fail_v in_o all_o these_o or_o in_o some_o one_o of_o these_o so_o do_v we_o yield_v unto_o temptation_n and_o so_o be_v we_o buffete_v by_o satan_n if_o we_o be_v pure_a in_o heart_n and_o stand_v steadfast_a the_o devil_n the_o world_n wicked_a man_n our_o own_o corruption_n and_o all_o may_v tempt_v we_o yet_o they_o shall_v not_o hurt_v us._n they_o may_v let_v we_o see_v some_o corruption_n that_o be_v in_o we_o some_o sin_n whereof_o we_o have_v not_o thorough_o repent_v of_o or_o something_o that_o be_v not_o right_a within_o we_o yet_o if_o we_o yield_v not_o unto_o they_o they_o shall_v do_v we_o good_a and_o not_o evil_a they_o shall_v drive_v we_o to_o christ_n before_o who_o we_o must_v lay_v open_a our_o wound_n that_o he_o of_o his_o goodness_n may_v bind_v they_o up_o this_o doctrine_n then_o as_o we_o see_v do_v teach_v we_o reverend_a and_o christian_a humility_n withal_o it_o do_v â—â—nister_v most_o worthy_a matter_n of_o singular_a comfort_n now_o that_o we_o be_v not_o deceiuâ—d_v herein_o it_o be_v requisite_a that_o we_o make_v some_o trial_n of_o our_o heart_n whereby_o we_o may_v be_v true_o humble_v if_o we_o find_v they_o corrupt_v or_o we_o may_v be_v comfort_v if_o through_o the_o blood_n of_o christ_n we_o do_v feel_v our_o sin_n wash_v away_o our_o heart_n be_v try_v two_o way_n either_o by_o affliction_n and_o temptation_n or_o else_o by_o the_o motion_n and_o affection_n thereof_o for_o if_o there_o be_v any_o corruption_n in_o our_o heart_n it_o will_v appear_v by_o one_o of_o these_o affliction_n sure_o it_o be_v that_o as_o a_o man_n do_v show_v himself_o in_o trouble_n and_o temptation_n such_o a_o one_o he_o be_v indeed_o if_o trouble_n do_v not_o overturn_v he_o if_o fear_v cause_v he_o not_o to_o fall_v away_o if_o temptation_n can_v move_v he_o to_o forsake_v the_o truth_n or_o to_o deny_v his_o profession_n then_o very_o he_o have_v a_o good_a argument_n that_o his_o heart_n be_v upright_o he_o have_v great_a cause_n of_o comfort_n and_o rejoice_v but_o contrariwise_o if_o for_o fear_v his_o heart_n faint_a if_o for_o trouble_n he_o turn_v away_o if_o in_o temptation_n he_o forget_v his_o trial_n and_o betray_v the_o truth_n his_o heart_n be_v not_o upright_o with_o god_n he_o be_v in_o the_o gall_n of_o bitterness_n he_o ought_v in_o his_o heart_n to_o be_v great_o humble_v before_o this_o time_n of_o trial_n come_v he_o may_v think_v well_o of_o himself_o he_o may_v persuade_v his_o heart_n that_o there_o be_v great_a godliness_n in_o he_o but_o if_o he_o examine_v not_o himself_o if_o he_o do_v not_o straight_o look_v unto_o his_o heart_n his_o virtue_n will_v prove_v vanity_n and_o such_o godliness_n will_v work_v his_o grief_n there_o be_v many_o man_n which_o now_o in_o this_o time_n of_o the_o gospel_n do_v account_v themselves_o very_o religious_a and_o they_o will_v bear_v a_o countenance_n with_o the_o best_a and_o will_v outward_o appear_v very_o forward_o but_o because_o they_o rest_v in_o their_o profession_n do_v not_o examine_v their_o heart_n their_o hope_n fail_v they_o and_o they_o fall_v away_o for_o when_o the_o state_n of_o the_o commonwealth_n shall_v be_v change_v when_o religion_n shall_v be_v alter_v when_o the_o truth_n shall_v be_v persecute_v when_o the_o lord_n shall_v take_v from_o they_o the_o light_n of_o his_o word_n and_o shall_v suffer_v satan_n to_o tempt_v they_o with_o heresy_n then_o their_o corruption_n will_v overcome_v they_o and_o cause_v they_o to_o believe_v lie_n likewise_o man_n that_o have_v be_v bring_v up_o by_o godly_a parent_n and_o man_n that_o have_v the_o company_n of_o good_a man_n may_v seem_v to_o be_v sure_o settle_v in_o sound_a religion_n but_o while_o they_o rest_v in_o these_o outward_a mean_n and_o labour_v not_o after_o some_o inward_a truth_n their_o heart_n do_v deceive_v they_o and_o in_o time_n they_o show_v themselves_o to_o be_v but_o hollow_a heart_a hypocrite_n for_o when_o the_o benefit_n of_o good_a company_n be_v take_v from_o they_o and_o when_o they_o light_v upon_o wicked_a company_n their_o former_a godliness_n be_v forget_v they_o will_v frame_v themselves_o unto_o that_o company_n therefore_o if_o they_o be_v tempt_v unto_o theft_n they_o will_v prove_v thief_n if_o occasion_n of_o filthiness_n or_o other_o vice_n be_v offer_v they_o will_v take_v the_o occasion_n and_o stay_v themselves_o with_o many_o
