understand_v they_o and_o this_o be_v the_o use_n we_o make_v of_o our_o guide_n not_o to_o submit_v our_o judgement_n to_o they_o without_o any_o understanding_n but_o to_o inform_v our_o judgement_n that_o we_o may_v be_v able_a to_o see_v and_o understand_v for_o ourselves_o thus_o our_o saviour_n teach_v his_o disciple_n he_o open_v their_o understanding_n that_o they_o may_v understand_v the_o scripture_n thus_o the_o apostle_n and_o primitive_a doctor_n instruct_v the_o world_n by_o expound_v the_o scripture_n to_o they_o which_o do_v not_o signify_v mere_o to_o tell_v they_o what_o the_o sense_n of_o scripture_n be_v and_o require_v they_o to_o believe_v it_o but_o show_v they_o out_o of_o the_o scripture_n that_o this_o be_v and_o must_v be_v the_o true_a sense_n of_o it_o and_o we_o need_v not_o fear_n that_o protestancy_n shall_v suffer_v any_o thing_n from_o such_o guide_n as_o these_o though_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n indeed_o have_v feel_v the_o ill_a effect_n of_o they_o ii_o the_o secular_a prince_n have_v all_o spiritual_a jurisdiction_n and_o prot._n authority_n immediate_o from_o and_o under_o god._n here_o he_o say_v i_o behave_v myself_o as_o if_o i_o be_v under_o apprehension_n and_o dare_v neither_o own_v nor_o reject_v this_o tenet_n and_o yet_o in_o my_o answer_n i_o express_o show_v what_o the_o church_n of_o england_n mean_v by_o the_o king_n supremacy_n in_o ecclesiastical_a 3._o cause_n which_o signify_v no_o more_o than_o that_o the_o king_n be_v supreme_a in_o his_o own_o dominion_n and_o therefore_o there_o be_v no_o power_n neither_o secular_a nor_o ecclesiastic_a above_o he_o for_o if_o there_o be_v he_o be_v not_o supreme_a and_o this_o i_o say_v may_v be_v prove_v from_o rom._n 13._o 1._o let_v every_o soul_n be_v subject_a to_o the_o high_a power_n to_o which_o he_o answer_v that_o this_o prove_v more_o than_o i_o grant_v it_o prove_v minister_a the_o word_n and_o sacrament_n to_o belong_v to_o the_o high_a power_n how_o so_o yes_o this_o it_o do_v unless_o minister_a the_o word_n and_o sacrament_n be_v not_o a_o soul_n affair_n be_v no_o act_n of_o power_n learned_o observe_v because_o every_o soul_n must_v be_v subject_a to_o the_o high_a power_n therefore_o the_o king_n have_v all_o power_n in_o soul-affair_n and_o therefore_o of_o minister_a the_o word_n and_o sacrament_n but_o if_o every_o soul_n only_o signify_v every_o man_n without_o except_v the_o pope_n himself_o than_o i_o suppose_v all_o ecclesiastic_n as_o well_o as_o secular_a person_n be_v include_v in_o it_o and_o if_o all_o must_v be_v subject_a to_o the_o king_n than_o the_o king_n be_v supreme_a over_o all_o but_o thing_n be_v at_o a_o low_a ebb_n in_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n when_o such_o silly_a quibble_n must_v pass_v for_o argument_n iii_o justification_n by_o faith_n alone_o viz._n a_o persuasion_n that_o we_o be_v justify_v be_v a_o wholesome_a doctrine_n in_o answer_n to_o this_o i_o deny_v that_o our_o church_n teach_v that_o justify_v faith_n be_v a_o persuasion_n that_o we_o be_v justify_v he_o grant_v that_o some_o of_o the_o church_n of_o england_n have_v condemn_v it_o p._n 4._o but_o yet_o he_o may_v as_o just_o charge_v we_o with_o it_o as_o we_o charge_v the_o church_n of_o rome_n with_o doctrine_n contrary_a to_o their_o general_n council_n and_o constant_a profession_n and_o we_o grant_v he_o may_v for_o if_o such_o thing_n be_v do_v they_o be_v very_o unjust_a both_o in_o he_o and_o we_o we_o deny_v that_o we_o do_v any_o such_o thing_n and_o have_v late_o abundant_o vindicate_v ourselves_o from_o such_o a_o imputation_n let_v he_o do_v as_o much_o for_o himself_o if_o he_o can_v but_o cranmer_n be_v of_o this_o mind_n by_o who_o the_o article_n be_v devise_v but_o how_o do_v that_o appear_v and_o if_o he_o be_v what_o be_v that_o to_o we_o when_o there_o be_v no_o such_o thing_n in_o our_o article_n will_v he_o allow_v the_o council_n of_o trent_n to_o be_v expound_v according_a to_o the_o private_a opinion_n of_o every_o bishop_n that_o be_v in_o it_o the_o antinomian_o plead_v the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o eleven_o article_n as_o the_o parent_n of_o their_o irreligion_n and_o so_o they_o do_v the_o scripture_n and_o what_o then_o will_v he_o hence_o infer_v that_o the_o scripture_n countenance_n antinomianism_n because_o they_o allege_v scripture_n for_o it_o and_o why_o then_o must_v this_o be_v charge_v upon_o our_o article_n though_o what_o some_o may_v have_v do_v i_o can_v tell_v but_o antinomian_o do_v it_o use_v to_o trouble_v themselves_o with_o our_o article_n but_o the_o strict_a adherer_n to_o the_o primitive_a reformer_n in_o doctrine_n the_o puritan_n assert_v this_o solifidian_n parenthesis_n as_o the_o genuine_a and_o literal_a sense_n of_o justification_n by_o faith_n alone_o and_o of_o the_o eleven_o article_n why_o the_o puritan_n the_o strict_a adherer_n to_o the_o primitive_a reformer_n in_o doctrine_n but_o we_o need_v not_o ask_v a_o reason_n of_o his_o say_n who_o understand_v nothing_o about_o what_o he_o speak_v for_o the_o puritan_n do_v not_o and_o do_v not_o believe_v that_o justify_v faith_n be_v a_o persuasion_n that_o we_o be_v justify_v but_o they_o place_v justify_v faith_n in_o a_o act_n of_o recumbency_n on_o christ_n for_o salvation_n and_o dispute_v vehement_o against_o his_o notion_n of_o it_o but_o he_o say_v i_o may_v have_v give_v they_o a_o text_n assert_v what_o i_o confess_v our_o church_n teach_v viz._n that_o justification_n by_o faith_n only_o be_v a_o wholesome_a doctrine_n and_o very_o full_a of_o comfort_n which_o intimate_v no_o necessity_n of_o repentance_n to_o justification_n none_o of_o the_o sacrament_n yes_o it_o do_v and_o of_o good_a work_n too_o as_o the_o condition_n of_o our_o justification_n though_o not_o as_o the_o meritorious_a cause_n of_o it_o for_o all_o this_o our_o church_n comprehend_v in_o the_o notion_n of_o a_o live_a faith_n which_o alone_o justify_v and_o then_o i_o suppose_v as_o many_o text_n as_o there_o be_v which_o attribute_n our_o justification_n to_o faith_n so_o many_o proof_n there_o be_v that_o justification_n by_o faith_n alone_o as_o oppose_v to_o all_o meritorious_a work_n be_v a_o wholesome_a doctrine_n and_o very_o full_a of_o comfort_n iv._o the_o substance_n of_o bread_n and_o wine_n remain_v after_o what_o it_o be_v before_o sacerdotal_a consecration_n here_o he_o take_v no_o notice_n of_o any_o one_o word_n which_o i_o return_v in_o answer_n the_o sum_n of_o which_o be_v that_o the_o material_a substance_n before_o and_o after_o consecration_n be_v the_o same_o that_o be_v that_o they_o be_v bread_n and_o wine_n still_o but_o by_o virtue_n of_o christ_n institution_n after_o consecration_n they_o be_v not_o mere_a bread_n and_o wine_n but_o a_o sacrament_n of_o our_o redemption_n by_o christ_n death_n and_o to_o such_o as_o right_o and_o worthy_o and_o by_o faith_n receive_v the_o same_o the_o bread_n which_o we_o break_v be_v a_o partake_n of_o the_o body_n of_o christ_n and_o likewise_o the_o cup_n of_o blessing_n be_v a_o partake_n of_o the_o blood_n of_o christ_n as_o our_o church_n teach_v and_o this_o i_o prove_v must_v be_v the_o sense_n of_o the_o word_n of_o institution_n this_o be_v my_o body_n and_o urge_v such_o argument_n for_o it_o in_o short_a as_o he_o dare_v not_o name_v again_o much_o less_o pretend_v to_o answer_n but_o instead_o of_o that_o he_o endeavour_v to_o prove_v p._n 5._o that_o the_o word_n of_o institution_n this_o be_v my_o body_n literal_o understand_v do_v express_o prove_v that_o the_o substance_n of_o bread_n do_v not_o remain_v at_o all_o after_o consecration_n for_o the_o eucharist_n be_v christ_n body_n and_o blood_n which_o if_o substantial_o bread_n and_o wine_n it_o can_v real_o be_v a_o change_n less_o than_o that_o of_o the_o substance_n of_o the_o element_n be_v insufficient_a to_o render_v they_o real_o and_o true_o what_o the_o text_n say_v they_o be_v after_o consecration_n but_o do_v not_o i_o give_v he_o my_o reason_n why_o these_o word_n can_v not_o be_v understand_v literal_o of_o the_o natural_a body_n and_o blood_n of_o christ_n and_o be_v it_o enough_o then_o for_o he_o to_o say_v that_o in_o a_o literal_a sense_n they_o must_v signify_v a_o substantial_a change_n of_o the_o bread_n and_o wine_n into_o christ_n natural_a body_n and_o blood_n without_o answer_v what_o i_o urge_v against_o it_o and_o yet_o in_o a_o literal_a sense_n it_o can_v signify_v so_o for_o if_o this_o refer_v to_o the_o bread_n which_o our_o saviour_n take_v and_o bless_a and_o break_v and_o it_o can_v refer_v to_o nothing_o else_o then_o the_o literal_a sense_n of_o the_o word_n be_v this_o bread_n be_v my_o body_n and_o if_o bread_n be_v the_o body_n of_o christ_n than_o the_o substance_n of_o the_o bread_n can_v be_v

christ_n too_o if_o it_o do_v not_o then_o how_o do_v he_o prove_v that_o the_o word_n of_o consecration_n in_o a_o literal_a sense_n transubstantiate_v the_o bread_n into_o the_o body_n of_o christ_n for_o this_o do_v not_o signify_v the_o bread_n and_o therefore_o this_o be_v my_o body_n can_v signify_v that_o the_o substance_n of_o bread_n be_v transubstantiate_v into_o christ_n body_n i_o wonder_v our_o author_n be_v not_o ashamed_a at_o this_o time_n of_o day_n to_o talk_v at_o this_o rate_n after_o somany_a excellent_a book_n as_o have_v be_v write_v upon_o this_o argument_n to_o save_v myself_o any_o far_a trouble_n i_o shall_v direct_v my_o reader_n to_o the_o late_a dialogue_n about_o the_o trinity_n and_o transubstantiation_n and_o the_o discourse_n of_o the_o holy_a eucharist_n in_o the_o two_o great_a point_n of_o the_o real_a presence_n and_o the_o adoration_n of_o the_o host_n where_o he_o will_v find_v abundant_a satisfaction_n also_o to_o the_o two_o next_o point_n which_o follow_v v._o our_o lord_n presence_n in_o the_o eucharist_n be_v mere_o gracious_a and_o influential_a and_o if_o more_o only_o to_o the_o faithful_a in_o answer_n to_o this_o i_o show_v he_o what_o we_o mean_v by_o christ_n presence_n in_o the_o eucharist_n that_o he_o be_v so_o present_a that_o his_o body_n and_o blood_n with_o all_o the_o benefit_n of_o his_o death_n and_o passion_n be_v exhibit_v to_o worthy_a receiver_n as_o much_o as_o he_o can_v have_v be_v 5._o have_v we_o eat_v his_o natural_a flesh_n and_o drink_v his_o blood_n which_o be_v somewhat_o more_o than_o the_o mere_a influence_n of_o his_o grace_n but_o he_o say_v i_o assert_v our_o lord_n eucharistical_a presence_n not_o to_o be_v substantial_a that_o be_v i_o suppose_v that_o the_o natural_a substance_n of_o his_o body_n be_v not_o there_o and_o therefore_o that_o he_o be_v not_o corporal_o present_a and_o this_o indeed_o i_o do_v assert_v therefore_o say_v he_o unless_o entire_o absent_a our_o lord_n must_v be_v present_a in_o the_o eucharist_n by_o grace_n and_o influence_n only_o what_o be_v there_o beside_o substance_n and_o efficacy_n belong_v to_o our_o saviour_n body_n and_o blood_n no_o colour_n of_o scripture_n be_v produce_v for_o this_o zuinglian_a proposition_n if_o he_o will_v allow_v no_o medium_n between_o christ_n corporal_n and_o substantial_a presence_n and_o his_o grace_n and_o influence_n since_o it_o be_v demonstrable_a that_o he_o be_v not_o corporal_o present_a we_o must_v in_o this_o sense_n allow_v that_o he_o be_v present_a only_a by_o his_o grace_n and_o influence_n as_o that_o be_v oppose_v to_o a_o corporal_a presence_n and_o all_o man_n must_v allow_v this_o who_o deny_v transubstantiation_n or_o consubstantiation_n but_o what_o be_v there_o beside_o substance_n and_o efficacy_n belong_v to_o our_o saviour_n body_n and_o blood_n i_o answer_v there_o can_v be_v nothing_o natural_o belong_v to_o any_o body_n beside_o its_o substance_n and_o natural_a virtue_n and_o power_n which_o he_o call_v its_o efficacy_n but_o by_o institution_n there_o may_v and_o we_o take_v the_o sacrament_n of_o the_o lord_n supper_n to_o be_v a_o institution_n and_o therefore_o not_o to_o have_v a_o natural_a but_o institute_v virtue_n and_o efficacy_n for_o the_o very_a notion_n of_o a_o institution_n be_v that_o all_o the_o virtue_n and_o efficacy_n of_o it_o be_v not_o owe_v to_o nature_n but_o to_o the_o will_n and_o appointment_n of_o god._n whatever_o be_v a_o natural_a power_n be_v no_o institution_n no_o sacrament_n for_o the_o effect_n there_o be_v whole_o owe_v to_o nature_n not_o to_o god_n appointment_n which_o act_v by_o a_o power_n and_o influence_n superior_a to_o nature_n which_o i_o think_v be_v little_o less_o than_o a_o demonstration_n that_o the_o natural_a body_n and_o blood_n of_o christ_n be_v not_o substantial_o present_a in_o the_o eucharist_n for_o whatever_o efficacy_n and_o virtue_n we_o attribute_v to_o eat_v the_o flesh_n and_o drink_v the_o blood_n of_o christ_n it_o be_v either_o a_o natural_a effect_n of_o this_o eat_v the_o body_n and_o drink_v the_o blood_n of_o christ_n or_o it_o be_v not_o if_o it_o be_v than_o it_o be_v no_o sacrament_n which_o work_v not_o by_o the_o power_n of_o nature_n but_o of_o institution_n if_o it_o be_v not_o what_o need_n be_v there_o of_o christ_n bodily_a presence_n in_o the_o sacrament_n when_o a_o sacramental_a body_n of_o christ_n consecrate_a bread_n and_o wine_n to_o represent_v and_o exhibit_v his_o break_a body_n and_o his_o bloodshed_n for_o we_o by_o virtue_n of_o a_o institution_n may_v be_v as_o effectual_a to_o all_o the_o end_n and_o purpose_n of_o a_o sacrament_n as_o his_o natural_a body_n can_v be_v which_o can_v have_v no_o sacramental_a efficacy_n but_o by_o virtue_n of_o a_o institution_n the_o benefit_n we_o expect_v from_o this_o sacramental_a feed_n on_o christ_n body_n be_v a_o interest_n in_o the_o merit_n of_o his_o death_n and_o passion_n viz._n the_o forgiveness_n of_o our_o sin_n the_o communication_n of_o his_o grace_n and_o spirit_n and_o a_o right_a to_o immortal_a life_n now_o i_o will_v desire_v to_o know_v whether_o these_o be_v the_o natural_a effect_n of_o a_o corporal_a eat_a christ_n natural_a body_n he_o purchase_v all_o this_o for_o we_o indeed_o by_o his_o death_n and_o passion_n but_o be_v pardon_n of_o sin_n which_o be_v god_n free_a and_o gracious_a act_n incorporate_v with_o christ_n natural_a body_n and_o will_v a_o corporal_a eat_n of_o his_o body_n communicate_v it_o to_o we_o do_v the_o communication_n of_o grace_n and_o spiritual_a life_n flow_v from_o the_o body_n or_o from_o the_o spirit_n of_o christ_n be_v it_o the_o contact_n of_o his_o body_n that_o make_v our_o body_n immortal_a or_o the_o inhabitation_n of_o his_o spirit_n in_o we_o what_o be_v that_o efficacy_n then_o which_o he_o attribute_n to_o christ_n natural_a body_n and_o suppose_v to_o be_v inherent_a in_o it_o a_o natural_a efficacy_n such_o as_o can_v belong_v to_o human_a body_n signify_v nothing_o to_o the_o purpose_n of_o a_o sacrament_n and_o there_o can_v be_v no_o other_o efficacy_n inherent_a in_o christ_n natural_a body_n unless_o he_o will_v say_v that_o pardon_n of_o sin_n and_o spiritual_a grace_n and_o a_o power_n of_o make_v other_o body_n immortal_a be_v the_o inherent_a and_o essential_a property_n of_o christ_n body_n but_o suppose_v it_o be_v so_o how_o can_v the_o mere_a presence_n of_o christ_n natural_a body_n in_o the_o sacrament_n which_o we_o neither_o see_v nor_o touch_v nor_o eat_v communicate_v all_o these_o divine_a virtue_n to_o we_o for_o if_o it_o be_v by_o natural_a communication_n it_o must_v be_v by_o contact_n for_o body_n have_v no_o other_o way_n of_o work_v upon_o each_o other_o and_o yet_o they_o will_v not_o allow_v that_o we_o touch_v the_o body_n of_o christ_n no_o more_o than_o that_o we_o see_v it_o or_o that_o we_o break_v it_o between_o our_o tooth_n or_o chew_v it_o or_o digest_v it_o in_o our_o stomach_n that_o be_v they_o will_v not_o allow_v that_o we_o natural_o eat_v it_o and_o then_o how_o can_v it_o natural_o communicate_v its_o virtue_n to_o we_o so_o that_o though_o the_o natural_a body_n of_o christ_n be_v present_a in_o the_o sacrament_n those_o divine_a grace_n we_o expect_v from_o it_o must_v be_v the_o effect_n of_o a_o sacramental_a institution_n not_o of_o nature_n and_o therefore_o the_o natural_a presence_n of_o christ_n body_n be_v of_o no_o use_n in_o the_o sacrament_n for_o god_n may_v as_o well_o annex_v all_o the_o benefit_n of_o his_o death_n and_o passion_n to_o the_o sacramental_a sign_n of_o his_o body_n and_o blood_n as_o to_o his_o natural_a body_n and_o the_o power_n and_o efficacy_n of_o the_o institution_n will_v be_v the_o same_o either_o way_n and_o when_o the_o natural_a presence_n of_o christ_n body_n in_o the_o eucharist_n be_v so_o absolute_o impossible_a such_o a_o contradiction_n to_o the_o sense_n and_o reason_n of_o man_n kind_n and_o of_o no_o use_n to_o the_o purpose_n of_o a_o sacrament_n but_o what_o may_v as_o well_o be_v otherwise_o supply_v and_o the_o sacramental_a eat_n of_o christ_n body_n in_o efficacious_a sign_n be_v so_o easy_a and_o intelligible_a and_o by_o the_o power_n of_o a_o institution_n equal_o effectual_a and_o so_o agreeable_a to_o the_o nature_n of_o all_o other_o institution_n and_o sacrament_n both_o of_o the_o old_a and_o new_a testament_n what_o
