captain_n and_o the_o captain_n general_n of_o the_o army_n so_o nothing_o be_v more_o hurtful_a to_o the_o church_n militant_a than_o when_o disorderly_a one_o usurp_v another_o place_n and_o office_n as_o when_o the_o minister_n will_v be_v magistrate_n and_o the_o magistrate_n minister_n and_o when_o the_o common_a people_n usurp_v the_o office_n of_o they_o both_o second_o when_o as_o he_o bid_v we_o stand_v in_o our_o place_n he_o restrain_v we_o from_o two_o extreme_n the_o one_o that_o we_o do_v not_o wilful_o thrust_v ourselves_o into_o the_o combat_n of_o temptation_n before_o curious_o and_o scrupulous_o to_o search_v out_o the_o reason_n why_o such_o and_o such_o virtue_n be_v liken_v to_o these_o or_o those_o piece_n of_o armour_n as_o for_o example_n why_o he_o call_v truth_n a_o girdle_n righteousness_n a_o breastplate_n faith_n a_o shield_n etc._n etc._n for_o it_o be_v not_o the_o apostle_n purpose_v so_o exact_o to_o fit_v the_o similitude_n as_o may_v appear_v 1._o thess_n 5.8_o where_o he_o indifferent_o ascribe_v the_o name_n of_o breastplate_n both_o to_o faith_n and_o charity_n by_o which_o here_o he_o understand_v righteousness_n but_o only_o brief_o of_o verity_n the_o word_n here_o use_v signify_v a_o broad_a stud_a belt_n use_v in_o war_n in_o ancient_a time_n wherewith_o the_o joint_n of_o the_o breastplate_n and_o that_o armour_n which_o defend_v the_o belly_n loin_n and_o thigh_n be_v cover_v and_o by_o this_o truth_n be_v resemble_v whereby_o some_o understand_v the_o truth_n of_o religion_n and_o of_o the_o doctrine_n which_o we_o profess_v other_o understand_v hereby_o truth_n and_o uprightness_n of_o heart_n or_o the_o integrity_n of_o a_o good_a conscience_n whereby_o we_o perform_v all_o duty_n of_o religion_n belong_v to_o god_n and_o our_o neighbour_n in_o simplicity_n without_o all_o hypocrisy_n and_o dissimulation_n but_o because_o both_o be_v notable_a and_o necessary_a part_n of_o our_o christian_a armour_n i_o abominable_a unto_o he_o first_o then_o we_o must_v contain_v all_o our_o action_n within_o the_o compass_n of_o god_n word_n and_o whatsoever_o we_o profess_v and_o practice_v it_o must_v have_v glorious_a soever_o our_o profession_n even_o of_o the_o true_a religion_n be_v before_o man_n yet_o it_o be_v abominable_a in_o the_o eye_n of_o god_n if_o it_o be_v not_o in_o truth_n and_o from_o a_o upright_o heart_n but_o counterfeit_n and_o hypocritical_a whatsoever_o duty_n and_o good_a work_n we_o perform_v though_o never_o so_o excellent_a in_o themselves_o yet_o be_v they_o not_o contain_v they_o will_v walk_v and_o march_v valiant_o in_o the_o way_n of_o godliness_n and_o christianity_n though_o they_o be_v full_a of_o the_o brier_n and_o thorn_n of_o affliction_n and_o the_o excellency_n and_o necessity_n of_o this_o shield_n of_o faith_n which_o appear_v by_o the_o virtue_n thereof_o in_o repel_v all_o the_o fiery_a dart_n of_o satan_n the_o apostle_n say_v that_o thereby_o we_o may_v quench_v his_o fiery_a dart_n allude_v to_o the_o custom_n of_o soldier_n in_o ancient_a time_n who_o malicious_o poison_v their_o dart_n whereby_o the_o body_n of_o those_o who_o be_v wound_v be_v so_o inflame_v that_o they_o can_v hardly_o be_v cure_v or_o ease_v of_o their_o rage_a and_o burn_a pain_n and_o such_o dart_n be_v all_o satan_n temptation_n whereby_o we_o be_v wound_v with_o sin_n for_o if_o they_o be_v not_o repel_v and_o quench_v with_o the_o shield_n of_o faith_n they_o will_v inflame_v our_o lust_n to_o sin_n and_o one_o sin_n will_v inflame_v our_o heart_n to_o another_o till_o there_o be_v kindle_v in_o we_o a_o world_n of_o wickedness_n and_o this_o we_o may_v see_v in_o the_o example_n of_o david_n who_o after_o that_o he_o give_v himself_o to_o idleness_n and_o sloth_n and_o so_o be_v pierce_v with_o one_o of_o satan_n fiery_a dart_n it_o present_o inflame_v his_o heart_n to_o commit_v adultery_n and_o have_v give_v place_n to_o that_o he_o be_v provoke_v to_o murder_v so_o that_o if_o we_o admit_v one_o of_o these_o fiery_a dart_n they_o will_v inflame_v we_o to_o receive_v another_o and_o so_o our_o burn_a wound_n will_v torment_v our_o conscience_n and_o most_o hardly_o admit_v of_o any_o cure_n and_o therefore_o it_o behoove_v we_o to_o take_v unto_o we_o the_o shield_n of_o faith_n whereby_o we_o may_v quench_v these_o fiery_a dart_n but_o why_o do_v the_o apostle_n use_v this_o improper_a speech_n see_v the_o shield_n do_v not_o quench_v but_o repel_v the_o dart_n that_o beat_v upon_o it_o i_o answer_v partly_o to_o show_v the_o nature_n of_o our_o enemy_n temptation_n namely_o that_o they_o be_v fiery_a mortal_a rage_a and_o pernicious_a as_o before_o i_o say_v and_o partly_o to_o set_v forth_o a_o double_a
