council_n do_v not_o disallow_v the_o sentence_n give_v by_o a_o secular_a judge_n nor_o pronounce_v he_o to_o be_v no_o competent_a judge_n but_o a_o penalty_n deprive_v that_o clerk_n of_o the_o fruit_n and_o benefit_n of_o such_o a_o sentence_n by_o reason_n of_o his_o lewdness_n and_o disorder_n now_o in_o that_o the_o father_n of_o that_o council_n do_v at_o that_o time_n acknowledge_v the_o civil_a magistrate_n to_o be_v the_o competent_a judge_n of_o clergy_n man_n by_o that_o it_o may_v be_v understand_v sufficient_o that_o they_o restrain_v this_o their_o decree_n to_o that_o case_n wherein_o a_o crime_n be_v raise_v upon_o a_o clerk_n in_o the_o church_n or_o a_o civil_a controversy_n set_v on_o foot_n against_o he_o therefore_o out_o of_o these_o case_n it_o be_v by_o this_o canon_n lawful_a for_o the_o clergy_n without_o offence_n to_o prosecute_v their_o suit_n in_o a_o civil_a court_n and_o to_o debate_v their_o business_n before_o a_o secular_a judge_n after_o follow_v the_o famous_a council_n of_o chalcedon_n ann._n dom_fw-la 451._o which_o also_o in_o the_o 9_o canon_n decree_v on_o this_o manner_n if_o any_o clergy_n person_n have_v business_n with_o a_o clergy_n person_n let_v he_o not_o forsake_v his_o proper_a bishop_n and_o run_v to_o temporal_a judgement_n but_o first_o let_v the_o business_n be_v sift_v by_o the_o pr_v per_fw-mi bishop_n or_o at_o least_o by_o the_o counsel_n of_o the_o same_o bishop_n they_o shall_v receive_v judgement_n and_o order_n from_o they_o by_o who_o both_o party_n be_v content_a to_o be_v judge_v if_o any_o shall_v do_v otherwise_o he_o shall_v be_v subject_a to_o the_o canonical_a consure_n observe_v how_o this_o council_n direct_v her_o speech_n to_o the_o clergy_n that_o they_o shall_v not_o leave_v
