strong_a faith_n in_o god_n for_o see_v he_o have_v power_n over_o the_o body_n of_o christ_n to_o transport_v it_o from_o place_n to_o place_n by_o the_o permission_n of_o god_n why_o may_v he_o not_o if_o god_n give_v he_o leave_v have_v power_n of_o any_o man_n body_n though_o he_o be_v never_o so_o true_a a_o believer_n if_o he_o have_v power_n in_o the_o head_n why_o not_o in_o the_o member_n if_o he_o have_v power_n to_o annoy_n job_n to_o kill_v his_o child_n &_o destroy_v they_o though_o they_o be_v no_o doubt_n the_o holy_a servant_n of_o god_n why_o may_v not_o the_o devil_n have_v power_n over_o our_o body_n to_o carry_v a_o man_n from_o one_o place_n to_o another_o if_o the_o devil_n can_v by_o god_n permission_n torment_v the_o body_n of_o one_o that_o be_v a_o daughter_n of_o faithful_a abraham_n 10._o and_o even_o 18._o year_n afflict_v she_o so_o as_o she_o be_v bruise_v and_o bow_v together_o by_o satan_n then_o no_o doubt_n he_o can_v do_v the_o less_o to_o remove_v man_n body_n from_o place_n to_o place_n and_o this_o may_v serve_v to_o admonish_v those_o use_v who_o think_v their_o faith_n be_v so_o strong_a that_o the_o devil_n can_v annoy_v they_o or_o any_o way_n bewitch_v they_o but_o if_o the_o devil_n have_v power_n by_o god_n permission_n to_o torment_v the_o body_n of_o the_o faithful_a yea_o to_o destroy_v the_o body_n of_o job_n child_n who_o no_o doubt_n be_v the_o true_a servant_n of_o god_n he_o may_v if_o god_n give_v he_o leave_v bewitch_v the_o godly_a man_n that_o live_v for_o we_o know_v what_o the_o holy_a ghost_n church_n of_o god_n in_o england_n though_o there_o be_v in_o it_o many_o blemish_n &_o corruption_n yet_o may_v it_o be_v and_o in_o truth_n be_v the_o true_a church_n of_o god_n for_o the_o church_n of_o god_n in_o england_n be_v proprotionable_a to_o the_o church_n at_o jerusalem_fw-la for_o as_o they_o have_v moses_n and_o the_o prophet_n read_v and_o expound_v so_o have_v we_o nay_o we_o can_v be_v call_v a_o mother_n church_n yet_o it_o may_v be_v true_o call_v a_o nource_a church_n to_o many_o neighbour_n church_n round_o about_o us._n as_o christ_n and_o his_o apostle_n do_v not_o therefore_o separate_v themselves_o or_o refuse_v to_o join_v with_o they_o in_o the_o service_n of_o god_n because_o of_o the_o corruption_n in_o this_o church_n at_o jerusalem_n but_o do_v teach_v and_o preach_v in_o the_o temple_n so_o none_o may_v therefore_o separate_v themselves_o and_o refuse_v to_o join_v with_o the_o people_n of_o god_n in_o his_o service_n and_o worship_n because_o of_o some_o few_o corruption_n that_o remain_v in_o it_o nay_o such_o as_o for_o these_o do_v separate_v themselves_o from_o god_n people_n do_v cut_v themselves_o from_o christ_n himself_o see_v they_o sever_v themselves_o from_o the_o church_n of_o god_n if_o any_o shall_v say_v that_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n be_v the_o true_a church_n of_o god_n as_o well_o as_o the_o church_n of_o jerusalem_n see_v the_o romish_a church_n have_v as_o many_o privilege_n as_o the_o church_n at_o jerusalem_n i_o answer_v by_o examine_v the_o particular_n it_o will_v appear_v to_o the_o contrary_n church_n as_o first_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n brag_v that_o she_o have_v her_o succession_n from_o the_o apostle_n but_o i_o answer_v succession_n from_o person_n without_o succession_n in_o the_o apostle_n doctrine_n can_v be_v no_o true_a note_n of_o the_o church_n second_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n have_v the_o sacrament_n of_o baptism_n yet_o that_o prove_v heâ—_n not_o the_o true_a church_n for_o in_o samaria_n they_o have_v the_o sacrament_n of_o circumcision_n and_o so_o in_o other_o place_n and_o yet_o it_o can_v be_v prove_v that_o they_o be_v the_o true_a church_n of_o god_n beside_o i_o answer_v the_o church_n of_o rome_n have_v baptism_n no_o otherwise_o then_o a_o thief_n have_v a_o true_a man_n purse_n now_o it_o can_v be_v say_v that_o a_o thief_n be_v therefore_o a_o true_a man_n because_o he_o have_v a_o true_a man_n purse_n last_o though_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n have_v the_o outward_a baptism_n yet_o she_o in_o doctrine_n overturn_v the_o inward_a baptism_n in_o their_o write_n that_o they_o hold_v it_o but_o in_o show_n not_o in_o truth_n for_o in_o the_o main_a ground_n of_o religion_n they_o overturn_v the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o prophet_n &_o apostle_n again_o they_o hold_v the_o scripture_n but_o as_o a_o lantern_n hold_v the_o candle_n not_o for_o itself_o but_o for_o those_o that_o pass_v by_o so_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n have_v the_o word_n of_o god_n not_o for_o themselves_o but_o for_o the_o good_a of_o god_n child_n which_o ever_o lie_v hide_v in_o the_o midst_n of_o popery_n 5_o she_o brag_v that_o she_o be_v the_o mother-church_n of_o many_o church_n i_o answer_v we_o must_v consider_v that_o city_n as_o rome_n be_v and_o as_o rome_n be_v the_o old_a rome_n which_o be_v in_o the_o time_n of_o paul_n be_v the_o true_a church_n of_o god_n but_o as_o for_o that_o old_a rome_n it_o be_v dead_a and_o bury_v and_o this_o new_a rome_n be_v that_o whore_n of_o babylon_n &_o no_o mother-church_n but_o a_o cruel_a stepmother_n to_o religion_n by_o all_o this_o we_o may_v see_v that_o the_o present_a church_n of_o rome_n be_v no_o church_n of_o god_n but_o only_o in_o name_n and_o outward_a show_n and_o see_v that_o the_o devil_n tempt_v our_o saviour_n christ_n in_o the_o holy_a city_n we_o learn_v that_o there_o be_v no_o place_n so_o holy_a but_o the_o devil_n can_v broach_v his_o temptation_n in_o it_o as_o we_o may_v see_v zach._n 3._o 1._o 2._o and_o therefore_o this_o condemn_v that_o dotage_n and_o sorcery_n of_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n who_o teach_v that_o their_o charm_a holy_a water_n their_o
take_v pain_n that_o their_o diligence_n in_o defend_v and_o uphold_v true_a religion_n and_o build_v the_o church_n of_o god_n may_v countervail_v satan_n diligence_n in_o hinder_v of_o it_o second_o it_o behoove_v all_o christian_n not_o only_o to_o pray_v for_o themselves_o but_o see_v the_o devil_n labour_v the_o ruin_n of_o the_o church_n special_o in_o prevail_a with_o prince_n and_o great_a man_n we_o must_v pray_v for_o the_o good_a of_o god_n church_n and_o child_n and_o every_o member_n of_o it_o by_o name_n for_o king_n &_o queen_n &c_n &c_n &_o good_a reason_n be_v there_o that_o we_o shall_v do_v so_o for_o in_o the_o good_a and_o flourish_a estate_n of_o the_o church_n we_o all_o receive_v benefit_n by_o it_o and_o fare_v the_o better_a for_o it_o three_o if_o satan_n dare_v set_v upon_o the_o son_n of_o god_n and_o tempt_v he_o to_o idolatry_n and_o to_o worship_v the_o devil_n then_o much_o more_o will_v he_o be_v tempt_v we_o to_o the_o like_a sin_n and_o set_v upon_o sinful_a man_n to_o move_v he_o to_o worship_v he_o and_o make_v he_o his_o god_n but_o you_o will_v say_v objection_n there_o be_v none_o so_o mad_a to_o worship_v the_o devil_n to_o make_v he_o our_o god_n oh_o we_o defy_v he_o true_a it_o be_v answer_n man_n say_v they_o defy_v the_o devil_n and_o spit_v at_o he_o but_o alas_o if_o we_o consider_v their_o deal_n we_o shall_v see_v the_o the_o jew_n and_o of_o the_o papist_n and_o it_o will_v appear_v that_o most_o man_n worship_v the_o devil_n and_o make_v he_o their_o god_n because_o the_o turk_n he_o be_v ignorant_a of_o the_o true_a god_n the_o jew_n worship_v god_n the_o father_n but_o not_o by_o jesus_n christ_n who_o they_o deny_v the_o papist_n worship_n a_o false_a and_o counterfeit_a christ_n forge_v by_o themselves_o and_o never_o read_v of_o in_o the_o word_n of_o god_n for_o they_o make_v he_o a_o saviour_n in_o part_n &_o a_o priest_n to_o be_v creator_n or_o the_o maker_n of_o his_o creator_n that_o it_o may_v appear_v that_o these_o three_o sort_n of_o people_n do_v not_o worship_v the_o true_a god_n but_o even_o the_o devil_n himself_o let_v we_o mark_v these_o 2_o principle_n first_o that_o all_o doctrine_n set_v down_o and_o invent_v by_o man_n concern_v god_n service_n and_o worship_n be_v against_o the_o word_n of_o god_n they_o be_v the_o doctrine_n of_o devil_n so_o say_v paul_n 1_o tim._n 4._o 1._o 3._o that_o there_o shall_v come_v false_a teacher_n which_o shall_v teach_v doctrine_n of_o devil_n and_o what_o be_v these_o vers._n 3._o he_o say_v such_o as_o forbid_v to_o marry_v and_o teach_v man_n that_o some_o meat_n be_v holy_a in_o themselves_o &_o some_o unholy_a and_o not_o lawful_a to_o be_v eat_v the_o second_o principle_n be_v this_o all_o worship_n of_o worship_n of_o the_o devil_n not_o of_o god_n now_o by_o these_o two_o principle_n it_o appear_v that_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n perform_v by_o the_o turk_n and_o by_o the_o jew_n it_o be_v no_o worship_n of_o god_n but_o the_o worship_n of_o devil_n see_v both_o of_o they_o worship_n the_o father_n out_o of_o the_o son_n and_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n in_o popery_n it_o be_v no_o better_a than_o the_o worship_n of_o the_o devil_n see_v they_o worship_v god_n out_o of_o the_o true_a christ_n and_o have_v forge_v to_o themselves_o a_o false_a counterfeit_a christ._n and_o if_o paul_n may_v true_o affirm_v of_o the_o gentile_n that_o they_o worship_v not_o the_o true_a god_n but_o offer_v to_o devil_n then_o mnch_v more_o may_v it_o be_v avouch_v of_o that_o abominable_a sacrifice_n of_o the_o mass_n that_o it_o be_v indeed_o the_o worship_n of_o the_o devil_n see_v it_o be_v more_o vile_a idolatry_n then_o that_o of_o the_o gentile_n now_o it_o will_v be_v say_v objection_n though_o the_o devil_n prevail_v thus_o with_o they_o yet_o he_o can_v prevail_v so_o with_o protestant_n neither_o can_v they_o be_v say_v to_o worship_v the_o devil_n answer_n i_o answer_v that_o in_o truth_n there_o be_v thousand_o of_o protestant_n in_o the_o world_n who_o do_v worship_v the_o devil_n for_o all_o those_o which_o do_v only_o in_o outward_a show_n profess_v true_a religion_n but_o in_o heart_n love_v the_o world_n set_v their_o heart_n upon_o pleasure_n profit_n and_o preferment_n such_o professor_n do_v in_o truth_n make_v the_o devil_n their_o god_n and_o may_v be_v say_v to_o worship_v the_o devil_n for_o to_o who_o soever_o they_o give_v their_o heart_n to_o they_o they_o do_v give_v worship_n but_o while_o they_o set_v their_o heart_n on_o these_o thing_n they_o do_v not_o love_n god_n neither_o do_v they_o believe_v in_o god_n and_o rest_n upon_o he_o as_o their_o god_n and_o therefore_o they_o make_v the_o world_n their_o god_n and_o so_o worship_v the_o devil_n four_o by_o this_o practice_n of_o the_o devil_n we_o see_v those_o man_n confute_v who_o think_v that_o the_o devil_n can_v make_v a_o league_n with_o man_n as_o with_o witch_n conjurer_n etc._n etc._n for_o we_o read_v and_o know_v such_o thing_n have_v be_v do_v and_o here_o we_o have_v a_o manifest_a proof_n of_o it_o for_o the_o devil_n offer_v a_o league_n to_o christ_n there_o be_v nothing_o want_v but_o our_o saviour_n christ_n his_o consent_n and_o if_o sinful_a man_n have_v be_v in_o christ_n stead_n questionless_a there_o have_v be_v a_o league_n and_o for_o so_o great_a gain_n he_o will_v have_v the_o devil_n his_o service_n then_o say_v jesus_n unto_o he_o 10._o avoid_v satan_n etc._n etc._n now_o follow_v the_o answer_n of_o our_o saviour_n christ._n and_o first_o in_o christ_n answer_n mark_v in_o propound_v of_o it_o he_o use_v first_o a_o speech_n of_o indignation_n and_o of_o defiance_n to_o the_o devil_n and_o his_o offer_n avoid_v satan_n as_o though_o christ_n shall_v have_v say_v i_o have_v hear_v thou_o blaspheme_v both_o i_o and_o my_o father_n &_o have_v thus_o long_o suffer_v thou_o but_o i_o will_v suffer_v thou_o no_o long_o get_v thou_o hence_o satan_n i_o will_v not_o vouchsafe_v to_o answer_v to_o thy_o temptation_n any_o more_o mark_v here_o in_o the_o answer_n of_o christ_n that_o he_o be_v content_a to_o endure_v the_o devil_n temptation_n and_o reproach_n which_o concern_v his_o own_o person_n but_o when_o he_o be_v so_o bold_a to_o blaspheme_v god_n his_o father_n he_o can_v endure_v he_o no_o pleasure_n therein_o he_o blaspheme_v god_n his_o father_n then_o this_o teach_v we_o use_v that_o if_o we_o shall_v hear_v ungodly_a wretch_n blaspheme_v the_o name_n of_o god_n we_o may_v not_o endure_v it_o but_o have_v indignation_n &_o great_a dislike_n of_o it_o and_o if_o we_o hear_v black-mouthed_a rabshekah_n blaspheme_v the_o holy_a name_n of_o god_n by_o swear_v curse_a ban_a we_o must_v be_v touch_v with_o grief_n to_o hear_v the_o glorious_a name_n of_o our_o god_n dishonour_v and_o if_o time_n and_o place_n require_v manifest_v our_o dislike_n in_o open_a reprehension_n of_o it_o when_o ahab_n and_o jezabel_n be_v both_o wicked_a hear_v that_o naboth_n have_v blaspheme_v god_n they_o rend_v their_o clothes_n in_o token_n of_o sorrow_n so_o when_o hezechiah_n hear_v the_o blasphemy_n of_o rabshekah_n 1_o he_o rend_v his_o clothes_n and_o be_v very_o much_o grieve_v for_o it_o when_o david_n hear_v the_o gentile_n say_v 3._o where_o be_v now_o their_o god_n this_o blasphemous_a speech_n do_v great_o affect_v he_o so_o as_o his_o very_a tear_n be_v his_o drink_n and_o the_o bad_a speech_n of_o the_o man_n of_o sodom_n do_v much_o affect_v lot_n &_o vex_v his_o righteous_a soul_n 2._o pet._n 2._o 8._o and_o as_o all_o man_n must_v be_v grieve_v to_o hear_v wicked_a man_n blaspheme_v the_o name_n of_o god_n so_o especial_o those_o that_o be_v governor_n of_o other_o and_o by_o name_n master_n of_o family_n as_o david_n say_v psal._n 101._o he_o will_v not_o suffer_v a_o talebearer_n in_o his_o house_n much_o less_o a_o blasphemer_n
now_o follow_v the_o three_o in_o this_o three_o temptation_n we_o be_v to_o consider_v again_o three_o especial_a point_n first_o the_o preparation_n of_o the_o devil_n ver_fw-la 8._o second_o the_o temptation_n itself_o ver_fw-la 9_o three_o christ_n his_o answer_n ver_fw-la 10._o and_o first_o of_o all_o see_v the_o devil_n do_v thus_o arm_v himself_o doct._n and_o come_v prepare_v three_o time_n in_o three_o several_a temptation_n it_o shall_v teach_v we_o all_o on_o our_o part_n to_o prepare_v ourselves_o continual_o and_o to_o be_v ready_a to_o resist_v his_o temptation_n in_o the_o devil_n preparation_n note_v two_o part_n first_o he_o take_v he_o to_o a_o exceed_a high_a monntaine_n second_o he_o show_v he_o all_o the_o kingdom_n of_o the_o world_n and_o the_o glory_n of_o they_o but_o how_o can_v the_o devil_n carry_v our_o saviour_n christ_n to_o this_o high_a mountain_n objection_n i_o answer_v answer_n he_o may_v do_v it_o two_o way_n first_o by_o vision_n second_o by_o real_a transport_v of_o his_o body_n from_o jerusalem_n to_o this_o mountain_n some_o think_v that_o this_o be_v only_o in_o vision_n but_o i_o rather_o think_v our_o saviour_n christ_n be_v carry_v local_o and_o real_o for_o our_o saviour_n christ_n his_o temptation_n be_v not_o imaginary_a but_o true_a and_o real_a temptation_n and_o the_o word_n import_v no_o less_o but_o that_o he_o be_v real_o and_o local_o transport_v from_o the_o city_n to_o the_o mountain_n the_o reason_n why_o the_o devil_n carry_v our_o saviour_n christ_n to_o the_o mountain_n be_v these_o first_o because_o the_o devil_n in_o all_o thing_n desireâ—_n to_o imitate_v god_n and_o to_o become_v as_o it_o be_v god_n ape_n now_o we_o read_v that_o the_o lord_n carry_v moses_n to_o the_o mount_n nebo_n 1._o to_o show_v he_o all_o the_o land_n of_o canaan_n so_o the_o devil_n to_o imitate_v god_n and_o by_o imitate_v god_n to_o match_v he_o and_o so_o to_o disgrace_v the_o lord_n carry_v our_o saviour_n christ_n to_o the_o mountain_n as_o it_o be_v likely_a to_o imitate_v god_n deal_v with_o moses_n second_o the_o devil_n carry_v our_o saviour_n christ_n to_o this_o high_a mountain_n as_o a_o most_o fit_a and_o convenient_a place_n to_o broach_v this_o his_o three_o and_o last_o temptation_n now_o in_o hand_n in_o that_o the_o devil_n do_v carry_v our_o saviour_n christ_n from_o jerusalem_n to_o this_o hill_n local_o hence_o we_o learn_v that_o he_o may_v by_o god_n permission_n have_v like_o power_n over_o the_o dear_a child_n of_o god_n not_o once_o but_o twice_o nay_o thrice_o &_o oftentimes_o we_o see_v this_o true_a in_o our_o saviour_n christ_n the_o head_n therefore_o if_o the_o lord_n permit_v satan_n and_o by_o his_o permission_n give_v the_o devil_n liberty_n to_o transport_v our_o body_n from_o place_n to_o place_n we_o must_v not_o be_v discourage_v see_v the_o same_o thing_n befall_v the_o head_n it_o may_v also_o befall_v his_o member_n which_o we_o be_v the_o second_o part_n of_o the_o devil_n preparation_n be_v this_o that_o he_o show_v he_o all_o the_o kingdom_n of_o the_o world_n etc._n etc._n now_o concern_v this_o we_o may_v not_o think_v the_o devil_n can_v do_v this_o in_o deed_n and_o truth_n to_o show_v christ_n all_o the_o several_a kingdom_n of_o the_o world_n as_o they_o be_v here_o place_v upon_o earth_n for_o that_o be_v a_o thing_n
