up_o a_o great_a deal_n more_o of_o a_o man_n time_n for_o the_o world_n than_o a_o man_n do_v immediate_o for_o the_o service_n of_o god_n and_o without_o blame_n well_o suppose_v that_o care_n thought_n and_o care_n but_o now_o examine_v in_o the_o next_o place_n the_o proportion_n of_o thy_o pain_n especial_a with_o the_o concurrence_n of_o thy_o affection_n and_o thy_o heart_n which_o have_v the_o most_o full_a gale_n of_o thy_o pain_n and_o which_o be_v more_o eager_a upon_o i_o say_v if_o thou_o do_v neither_o give_v god_n the_o principal_a of_o thy_o time_n nor_o bestow_v the_o great_a part_n of_o thy_o time_n upon_o he_o yet_o do_v thou_o give_v he_o the_o principal_a of_o thy_o heart_n and_o affection_n that_o though_o thou_o be_v necessitate_v to_o converse_v more_o about_o the_o world_n then_o for_o god_n why_o yet_o if_o thou_o do_v it_o more_o eager_o and_o with_o a_o great_a eagerness_n of_o affection_n towards_o god_n and_o thy_o heart_n do_v infinite_o more_o prize_n and_o love_n and_o esteem_v of_o god_n and_o go_v with_o more_o alacrity_n and_o cheerfulness_n and_o more_o heat_n and_o delectation_n of_o spirit_n when_o thou_o be_v about_o god_n and_o about_o heavenly_a thing_n than_o it_o do_v about_o worldly_a thing_n this_o may_v be_v some_o thing_n indeed_o but_o if_o there_o go_v together_o with_o the_o flower_n of_o thy_o time_n the_o eagerness_n of_o thy_o heart_n and_o affection_n towards_o earthly_a thing_n that_o thy_o heart_n be_v corrupt_v with_o they_o and_o thy_o judgement_n and_o thy_o estimation_n draw_v after_o they_o and_o thou_o be_v build_v more_o on_o they_o and_o please_v more_o with_o they_o and_o in_o a_o word_n all_o thy_o affection_n run_v more_o to_o they_o than_o to_o heavenly_a thing_n i_o can_v see_v then_o how_o there_o can_v be_v any_o colour_n of_o excuse_n now_o therefore_o examine_v thyself_o in_o this_o and_o do_v thou_o deal_v true_o with_o thyself_o and_o by_o that_o we_o may_v discern_v a_o great_a stream_n run_v for_o the_o world_n than_o for_o god_n and_o so_o a_o great_a disorder_n in_o the_o affection_n and_o last_o it_o be_v a_o evident_a character_n of_o neglect_v of_o that_o there_o be_v a_o inordinate_a love_n go_v a_o whore_v after_o the_o world_n and_o of_o place_v our_o felicity_n in_o they_o more_o than_o we_o shall_v do_v and_o more_o than_o we_o do_v in_o god_n when_o we_o can_v facilitate_v and_o further_o our_o prosecution_n of_o these_o worldly_a thing_n with_o a_o neglect_n of_o our_o duty_n to_o god_n god_n duty_n to_o god_n when_o i_o can_v neglect_v my_o duty_n to_o my_o god_n when_o i_o can_v neglect_v my_o duty_n to_o my_o own_o soul_n soul_n to_o our_o own_o soul_n when_o i_o thus_o run_v after_o the_o world_n that_o i_o care_v not_o if_o i_o do_v trample_v upon_o god_n in_o the_o way_n and_o trample_v upon_o christ_n in_o the_o way_n upon_o my_o own_o soul_n upon_o heaven_n and_o all_o in_o the_o way_n so_o that_o i_o can_v make_v so_o much_o the_o more_o speed_n towards_o these_o worldly_a thing_n this_o be_v a_o evident_a sign_n that_o my_o heart_n be_v addict_v to_o they_o and_o that_o my_o heart_n be_v overgrow_v with_o a_o desire_n of_o they_o mark_v this_o and_o if_o thou_o find_v i_o say_v that_o thou_o can_v dispense_v with_o thy_o duty_n towards_o god_n or_o any_o service_n of_o he_o for_o the_o prosecution_n of_o thy_o worldly_a estate_n if_o thou_o find_v that_o thou_o can_v dispense_v with_o thy_o duty_n towards_o thy_o neighbour_n because_o thou_o will_v not_o diminish_v thy_o estate_n or_o that_o thou_o can_v dispense_v with_o thy_o duty_n towards_o thy_o own_o soul_n neglect_v the_o spiritual_a edification_n of_o it_o because_o it_o do_v take_v thou_o from_o the_o prosecute_n of_o the_o world_n this_o be_v a_o evident_a sign_n that_o thy_o heart_n run_v out_o wonderful_o inordinate_o after_o they_o exhortation_n exhortation_n 3._o use_v in_o the_o last_o place_n let_v i_o add_v brief_o the_o sum_n of_o the_o exhortation_n which_o if_o time_n have_v not_o prevent_v i_o will_v have_v propound_v more_o particular_o the_o exhortation_n shall_v be_v to_o press_v this_o duty_n upon_o we_o that_o we_o know_v our_o felicity_n do_v not_o consist_v in_o these_o worldly_a thing_n will_v regulate_v and_o square_v ourselves_o by_o this_o rule_n i_o will_v brief_o touch_v these_o two_o thing_n those_o duty_n upon_o we_o to_o set_v we_o upon_o the_o performance_n of_o they_o 1._o duty_n duty_n now_o there_o be_v divers_a duty_n that_o may_v be_v infer_v very_o natural_o upon_o the_o consideration_n of_o this_o truth_n and_o be_v worthy_a to_o be_v learn_v as_o 1._o abate_v for_o the_o world_n world_n abate_v for_o the_o world_n if_o this_o be_v so_o that_o our_o happiness_n do_v not_o consist_v in_o these_o worldly_a thing_n let_v we_o learn_v then_o to_o abate_v ourselves_o something_o in_o our_o eagerne_n towards_o the_o world_n that_o we_o will_v not_o be_v so_o eager_a for_o it_o tanquam_fw-la hac_fw-la sit_fw-la nostri_fw-la medicina_fw-la doloris_fw-la follow_v not_o the_o world_n as_o though_o that_o will_v cure_v our_o malady_n and_o heal_v our_o misery_n and_o bring_v a_o happiness_n to_o our_o soul_n and_o therefore_o they_o that_o have_v such_o erroneous_a thought_n and_o find_v themselves_o convince_v let_v they_o show_v it_o by_o abate_v of_o their_o eagerness_n towards_o these_o worldly_a thing_n 1._o abate_v our_o action_n action_n action_n the_o eagerness_n of_o they_o learn_v hence_o not_o to_o be_v so_o busy_a not_o so_o early_o and_o so_o late_o and_o so_o thoughtful_a and_o so_o careful_o for_o and_o about_o these_o worldly_a thing_n not_o to_o be_v so_o anxious_a in_o our_o spirit_n for_o they_o i_o say_v learn_v hence_o to_o abate_v our_o action_n not_o to_o encumber_v ourselves_o too_o much_o with_o worldly_a thing_n do_v but_o as_o our_o duty_n and_o conscience_n require_v so_o far_o as_o we_o be_v bind_v by_o the_o rule_n of_o duty_n to_o provide_v for_o ourselves_o and_o family_n do_v it_o in_o duty_n and_o inconscience_n to_o god_n but_o do_v not_o overdo_v it_o do_v not_o too_o much_o trouble_v not_o yourselves_o about_o too_o many_o thing_n as_o martha_n do_v affection_n affection_n 2._o abate_v at_o least_o if_o not_o our_o action_n if_o we_o can_v forbear_v any_o one_o of_o our_o action_n but_o our_o charge_n and_o calling_n require_v it_o yet_o i_o say_v abate_v in_o our_o affection_n cool_v our_o affection_n towards_o these_o thing_n that_o though_o i_o do_v use_v they_o for_o necessity_n sake_n yet_o my_o heart_n belong_v to_o be_v free_v from_o this_o necessity_n o_o when_o shall_v my_o mind_n be_v perfect_o free_v from_o these_o thing_n and_o o_o when_o shall_v that_o happy_a time_n be_v that_o god_n will_v free_v i_o from_o the_o burden_n of_o these_o worldly_a thing_n that_o i_o may_v not_o soil_n my_o soul_n still_o with_o these_o worldly_a thing_n that_o i_o may_v not_o converse_v in_o this_o present_a world_n always_o but_o that_o i_o may_v live_v continual_o in_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o that_o bless_a presence_n of_o god_n and_o behold_v his_o face_n continual_o and_o exercise_v myself_o in_o nothing_o but_o serve_v and_o praise_v of_o he_o and_o have_v nothing_o else_o to_o do_v abate_v at_o least_o your_o affection_n do_v not_o so_o much_o esteem_v these_o worldly_a thing_n and_o the_o godly_a man_n in_o this_o sense_n it_o be_v true_a i_o say_v in_o regard_n of_o christian_n they_o have_v they_o all_o under_o their_o foot_n but_o worldly_a man_n have_v they_o as_o a_o crown_n on_o their_o head_n and_o they_o esteem_v it_o so_o but_o indeed_o it_o be_v a_o burden_n that_o press_v they_o down_o that_o they_o can_v arise_v in_o any_o noble_a thought_n and_o therefore_o to_o they_o say_v but_o then_o again_o if_o a_o man_n have_v both_o mean_n and_o wit_n to_o do_v it_o yet_o if_o he_o have_v not_o a_o mind_n to_o it_o he_o can_v not_o do_v it_o but_o it_o can_v be_v say_v so_o of_o he_o for_o he_o have_v a_o mind_n to_o try_v solomon_n set_v his_o heart_n to_o it_o to_o try_v the_o nature_n of_o all_o the_o world_n and_o worldly_a thing_n to_o try_v what_o be_v and_o ordinary_o this_o be_v our_o folly_n that_o whatsoever_o a_o man_n be_v eager_o set_v upon_o that_o do_v please_v he_o while_o he_o be_v a_o suitor_n for_o it_o he_o please_v himself_o with_o mere_o the_o defect_n in_o the_o creature_n be_v that_o it_o satisfy_v not_o god_n will_v not_o have_v it_o so_o neither_o be_v it_o good_a for_o we_o to_o be_v so_o namely_o that_o we_o shall_v find_v a_o fullness_n in_o the_o creature_n and_o not_o only_o for_o the_o particular_n do_v we_o find_v it_o but_o also_o in_o the_o conjunction_n of_o all_o together_o it_o be_v the_o say_n of_o a_o great_a emperor_n that_o in_o his_o time_n have_v pass_v all_o the_o rank_n and_o state_n of_o every_o condition_n he_o have_v be_v mean_a and_o base_a and_o yet_o grow_v to_o the_o great_a not_o good_a himself_o it_o be_v impossible_a that_o any_o of_o these_o thing_n shall_v make_v he_o happy_a a_o wicked_a man_n if_o he_o remain_v such_o he_o can_v but_o be_v in_o a_o miserable_a condition_n a_o miserable_a man_n for_o all_o these_o thing_n now_o these_o be_v indifferent_a and_o as_o incident_a to_o the_o wicked_a as_o to_o the_o godly_a god_n make_v not_o these_o thing_n any_o badge_n of_o his_o people_n or_o any_o character_n of_o difference_n or_o pledge_n of_o his_o love_n and_o favour_n but_o deal_v they_o promiscuous_o to_o all_o yea_o many_o time_n and_o most_o frequent_o his_o people_n have_v the_o least_o share_n in_o they_o his_o servant_n be_v low_a and_o base_a for_o these_o outward_a thing_n for_o those_o create_a excellency_n it_o may_v be_v they_o be_v not_o many_o wise_a nor_o many_o noble_a nor_o many_o rich_a that_o may_v be_v rather_o a_o vexation_n but_o god_n bestow_v grace_n on_o they_o for_o all_o these_o outward_a thing_n be_v very_o various_a for_o the_o good_n of_o the_o body_n and_o much_o more_o for_o the_o estate_n be_v common_a to_o all_o nay_o sometime_o god_n bestow_v they_o and_o usual_o upon_o those_o that_o be_v perfect_o happy_a it_o will_v appear_v to_o rise_v from_o 1._o the_o nature_n of_o happiness_n 2._o the_o nature_n of_o earthly_a thing_n 3._o the_o nature_n of_o man_n 1._o be_v nature_n of_o happiness_n wherein_o it_o must_v be_v i_o must_v premise_v here_o though_o i_o include_v it_o in_o the_o other_o in_o the_o first_o place_n something_o of_o the_o nature_n of_o happiness_n now_o happiness_n in_o the_o nature_n of_o it_o imply_v these_o two_o thing_n perfection_n and_o satisfaction_n and_o there_o can_v be_v happiness_n where_o these_o do_v not_o meet_v perfection_n perfection_n 1._o happiness_n be_v that_o which_o give_v the_o utmost_a perfection_n and_o completeness_n to_o our_o nature_n satisfaction_n satisfaction_n 2._o and_o second_o it_o must_v be_v happiness_n in_o that_o estate_n and_o condition_n which_o give_v true_a and_o full_a satisfaction_n to_o the_o soul_n that_o it_o can_v rest_v upon_o it_o and_o have_v quiet_a and_o full_a content_n in_o it_o now_o neither_o of_o these_o two_o neither_o the_o perfect_a of_o our_o nature_n nor_o the_o satisfy_n and_o content_v of_o our_o soul_n can_v be_v have_v in_o this_o fruition_n of_o any_o create_v good_a thing_n whatsoever_o as_o i_o have_v often_o express_v it_o aurum_fw-la luto_fw-la inaurare_fw-la to_o guild_v gold_n with_o dirt_n it_o be_v ridiculous_a to_o beautify_v the_o more_o excellent_a thing_n with_o the_o inferior_a or_o the_o more_o unworthy_a thing_n to_o think_v to_o make_v a_o man_n happy_a with_o that_o which_o be_v low_o than_o a_o man_n self_n it_o add_v rather_o disgrace_v it_o be_v impossible_a that_o satisfaction_n shall_v be_v have_v in_o these_o thing_n as_o it_o be_v for_o a_o stone_n to_o mount_v up_o or_o rest_n in_o the_o air_n without_o hold_v up_o with_o a_o man_n hand_n or_o some_o other_o thing_n the_o air_n it_o be_v a_o thin_a liquid_a body_n and_o that_o a_o heavy_a body_n and_o therefore_o it_o will_v give_v way_n unto_o it_o to_o fall_v down_o it_o cut_v through_o the_o air_n and_o can_v find_v no_o rest_n till_o it_o come_v to_o some_o solid_a body_n for_o if_o it_o may_v be_v it_o will_v never_o leave_v move_v till_o it_o come_v to_o the_o centre_n so_o it_o be_v impossible_a that_o the_o sublime_a nature_n of_o man_n which_o be_v substantial_a and_o solid_a a_o man_n that_o have_v solid_a affection_n and_o solid_a understanding_n i_o say_v it_o be_v impossible_a that_o he_o shall_v find_v any_o solid_a rest_n but_o in_o the_o centre_n in_o god_n who_o be_v the_o alone_a centre_n of_o rest_n all_o these_o earthly_a thing_n be_v but_o like_o the_o air_n to_o the_o stone_n they_o can_v give_v the_o soul_n no_o stay_n but_o those_o solid_a affection_n will_v make_v way_n through_o they_o as_o be_v airy_a substance_n 2._o but_o it_o will_v appear_v more_o clear_a thing_n the_o nature_n of_o create_a thing_n if_o we_o consider_v the_o nature_n of_o these_o earthly_a thing_n and_o especial_o if_o we_o compare_v together_o the_o general_a nature_n of_o these_o earthly_a create_v good_a thing_n and_o the_o nature_n of_o man_n and_o we_o shall_v find_v that_o there_o be_v no_o 1._o proportion_n in_o
into_o a_o compendious_a mould_n so_o as_o it_o may_v have_v go_v along_o with_o the_o other_o time_n prevent_v i_o and_o now_o i_o shall_v resolve_v not_o to_o enlarge_v it_o but_o to_o deliver_v it_o in_o the_o same_o compass_n and_o with_o the_o same_o brevity_n i_o then_o intend_v partly_o because_o i_o find_v some_o weakness_n which_o make_v i_o not_o altogether_o fit_a to_o enlarge_v much_o and_o partly_o because_o what_o ever_o may_v seem_v to_o be_v defective_a or_o short_a in_o this_o place_n there_o will_v be_v sufficient_a opportunity_n in_o the_o next_o point_n to_o bring_v it_o in_o wherein_o we_o shall_v treat_v of_o the_o positive_a part_n of_o happiness_n wherein_o it_o lie_v indeed_o if_o it_o do_v not_o lie_v in_o these_o worldly_a thing_n to_o make_v we_o happy_a application_n 2._o application_n 2._o there_o be_v but_o three_o thing_n in_o general_a which_o i_o intend_v to_o infer_v by_o way_n of_o use_n and_o application_n out_o of_o the_o consideration_n of_o this_o divine_a truth_n the_o first_o shall_v be_v for_o instruction_n the_o second_o for_o reproof_n the_o three_o for_o exhortation_n which_o be_v indeed_o the_o most_o general_a head_n which_o may_v help_v to_o regulate_v and_o guide_v our_o practice_n to_o which_o all_o application_n tend_v instruction_n 1._o instruction_n 1._o for_o instruction_n brief_o to_o touch_v upon_o that_o for_o convince_v all_o the_o erroneous_a conceit_n which_o man_n be_v ready_a to_o fasten_v upon_o and_o which_o do_v fasten_v upon_o man_n many_o time_n ere_o they_o be_v aware_a we_o may_v see_v here_o the_o broad_a and_o wide_a error_n of_o all_o philosophical_a fancy_n concern_v happiness_n philosopher_n convince_v the_o error_n of_o worldly_a philosopher_n augustine_n reckon_v up_o no_o less_o than_o 288._o several_a opinion_n of_o several_a learned_a philosopher_n that_o place_v happiness_n one_o in_o one_o thing_n and_o another_o in_o another_o thing_n every_o one_o be_v different_a and_o oppose_v one_o another_o every_o one_o contradict_v what_o other_o have_v say_v and_o be_v confident_a of_o his_o own_o but_o as_o the_o apostle_n speak_v of_o the_o romanos_fw-la in_o the_o like_a cause_n rom_n 1.22_o 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d i_o e._n the_o conceit_n of_o their_o own_o wisdom_n and_o their_o ambition_n make_v they_o fool_n i._n e._n even_o befool_v they_o and_o they_o grow_v infatuate_a and_o indeed_o this_o be_v a_o point_n that_o it_o be_v not_o to_o be_v expect_v that_o the_o conceit_n of_o natural_a reason_n or_o the_o natural_a light_n of_o a_o man_n shall_v happiness_n lie_v if_o nature_n can_v have_v do_v it_o than_o the_o learn_a wit_n and_o wisdom_n may_v happy_o have_v find_v it_o out_o but_o they_o can_v not_o they_o grope_v in_o the_o dark_a as_o the_o sodomite_n when_o they_o be_v strike_v with_o blindness_n grope_v to_o find_v lot_n door_n so_o they_o grope_v to_o see_v if_o by_o any_o mean_n they_o may_v find_v out_o happiness_n but_o they_o have_v not_o light_a enough_o to_o do_v it_o in_o the_o second_o place_n to_o mention_v that_o which_o be_v not_o so_o far_o out_o of_o the_o way_n we_o will_v not_o meddle_v here_o now_o with_o philosopher_n professor_n godly_a professor_n 2._o it_o may_v convince_v the_o error_n of_o godly_a professor_n and_o of_o those_o that_o pretend_v to_o christianity_n and_o have_v more_o than_o natural_a man_n be_v alienate_v from_o they_o in_o their_o principle_n yet_o even_o among_o they_o will_v appear_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o the_o relic_n of_o that_o wound_n by_o that_o blow_n which_o our_o nature_n receive_v by_o our_o fall_n in_o this_o i_o shall_v bring_v the_o application_n near_o to_o ourselves_o we_o may_v see_v here_o our_o blindness_n in_o this_o by_o the_o experience_n of_o all_o christian_n and_o in_o some_o degree_n of_o the_o best_a sort_n too_o who_o be_v there_o that_o do_v not_o place_n too_o much_o in_o these_o worldly_a thing_n that_o have_v not_o too_o high_a a_o esteem_n and_o make_v too_o precious_a account_n of_o they_o and_o do_v not_o retain_v many_o time_n in_o his_o mind_n and_o nourish_v too_o some_o secret_a thought_n at_o least_o that_o there_o be_v some_o extraordinary_a virtue_n in_o those_o thing_n to_o make_v a_o man_n happy_a there_o be_v many_o character_n that_o do_v evident_o discover_v the_o relic_n of_o this_o disease_n that_o it_o be_v not_o full_o cure_v even_o where_o grace_n begin_v his_o work_n but_o i_o shall_v better_o touch_v on_o this_o afterward_o and_o shall_v therefore_o pass_v it_o now_o 2._o other_o correct_v our_o judgement_n concern_v the_o happiness_n of_o other_o it_o may_v rectify_v our_o judgement_n concern_v the_o happiness_n first_o of_o other_o second_o of_o ourselves_o 1._o of_o other_o we_o may_v learn_v to_o judge_v what_o be_v true_a happiness_n and_o who_o be_v the_o happy_a man_n and_o if_o we_o will_v do_v this_o aright_o we_o must_v not_o do_v it_o populari_fw-la the_o excellency_n or_o the_o confluence_n of_o these_o worldly_a thing_n as_o when_o i_o see_v a_o man_n suppose_v one_o that_o have_v a_o very_a great_a estate_n and_o have_v plenty_n of_o all_o in_o this_o world_n suppose_v he_o have_v with_o that_o many_o perfection_n of_o body_n as_o beauty_n and_o strength_n suppose_v he_o with_o all_o this_o have_v many_o excellency_n of_o mind_n that_o he_o be_v pregnant_a in_o understanding_n and_o admirable_a in_o many_o such_o ability_n we_o be_v ready_a as_o samuel_n be_v in_o the_o cause_n of_o david_n we_o be_v ready_a to_o mistake_v the_o true_a happy_a man_n and_o to_o set_v the_o crown_n of_o happiness_n upon_o the_o wrong_a head_n as_o he_o be_v ready_a to_o pour_v out_o the_o oil_n upon_o eliah_n the_o elder_a son_n and_o a_o goodly_a man_n and_o least_o of_o all_o though_o upon_o poor_a little_a david_n that_o be_v a_o out_o cast_v and_o abroad_o in_o the_o field_n as_o a_o shepherd_n and_o this_o man_n eliah_n be_v a_o gentleman_n a_o gallant_a home_n with_o his_o father_n and_o he_o keep_v his_o father_n sheep_n but_o god_n place_v the_o crown_n upon_o he_o though_o as_o i_o say_v samuel_n be_v ready_a to_o of_o fortune_n that_o be_v lull_v asleep_a in_o the_o lap_n of_o the_o world_n and_o be_v dandle_v there_o and_o have_v all_o plenty_n and_o abundance_n of_o worldly_a thing_n happiness_n our_o own_o happiness_n 2._o this_o may_v rectify_v our_o judgement_n concern_v our_o own_o happiness_n in_o this_o the_o deceit_n be_v more_o dangerous_a as_o this_o will_v help_v we_o to_o judge_v of_o other_o so_o of_o ourselves_o we_o shall_v not_o therefore_o if_o we_o will_v be_v true_a to_o this_o point_n and_o do_v remember_v it_o well_o be_v in_o danger_n to_o bless_v ourselves_o and_o soothe_v up_o ourselves_o as_o though_o we_o be_v in_o estate_n of_o happiness_n when_o thing_n go_v smooth_o with_o we_o i_o beseech_v you_o to_o remember_v this_o present_a point_n and_o keep_v the_o truth_n of_o it_o in_o your_o mind_n that_o it_o may_v be_v a_o charm_n
against_o all_o enchantmens_n in_o this_o kind_n that_o do_v fascinate_v our_o mind_n and_o bewitch_v we_o with_o the_o thing_n of_o this_o world_n do_v not_o think_v the_o rich_a man_n or_o the_o honourable_a man_n or_o the_o wise_a man_n that_o because_o he_o have_v these_o endowment_n therefore_o he_o be_v happy_a not_o you_o yourselves_o if_o you_o have_v they_o deceive_v not_o yourselves_o your_o happiness_n have_v not_o in_o these_o thing_n although_o you_o be_v rich_a and_o witty_a and_o beautiful_a etc._n etc._n these_o be_v indeed_o great_a thing_n but_o these_o make_v not_o the_o man_n do_v not_o think_v so_o as_o to_o befool_v yourselves_o and_o not_o look_v out_o after_o the_o main_a it_o be_v a_o observation_n a_o man_n be_v better_o be_v deceive_v in_o the_o dark_a than_o have_v a_o false_a glimmer_a light_n because_o the_o confidence_n of_o the_o one_o will_v make_v he_o careless_a and_o so_o fall_v whereas_o otherwise_o he_o will_v weigh_v more_o how_o he_o go_v and_o ponder_v every_o step_n careful_o and_o so_o avoid_v the_o danger_n a_o man_n be_v better_o be_v in_o a_o bad_a and_o blind_a estate_n and_o condition_n than_o in_o such_o a_o condition_n as_o have_v a_o kind_n of_o glimmer_a of_o happiness_n which_o keep_v he_o off_o from_o the_o true_a happiness_n and_o make_v he_o run_v many_o time_n upon_o the_o rock_n of_o true_a misery_n out_o of_o a_o false_a conceit_n that_o he_o be_v already_o in_o the_o state_n of_o happiness_n but_o of_o these_o thing_n i_o have_v speak_v enough_o for_o the_o present_a 2._o use_v of_o reprehension_n of_o as_o we_o have_v something_o here_o for_o the_o rectify_v of_o our_o judgement_n in_o the_o point_n of_o happiness_n so_o in_o the_o second_o place_n this_o afford_v matter_n pregnant_a enough_o of_o reproof_n &_o reprehension_n to_o reprove_v the_o practice_n of_o many_o man_n in_o the_o world_n i_o will_v first_o name_v the_o practice_n and_o then_o a_o little_a unmask_v the_o pretence_n by_o which_o man_n think_v they_o have_v a_o nook_n to_o run_v out_o at_o and_o think_v that_o this_o truth_n do_v not_o touch_v they_o with_o any_o just_a reproof_n man_n the_o practice_n of_o worldly_a man_n 1._o the_o practice_n of_o worldly_a man_n it_o be_v clear_a enough_o that_o all_o worldly_a man_n that_o be_v make_v up_o of_o dirt_n and_o who_o carry_v about_o they_o the_o curse_n of_o the_o serpent_n upon_o thy_o belly_n shall_v thou_o go_v &_o dust_n shall_v thou_o eat_v they_o be_v like_o the_o woman_n in_o the_o gospel_n that_o have_v a_o spirit_n of_o infirmity_n for_o so_o many_o year_n that_o grow_v crooked_a downward_o towards_o the_o earth_n these_o be_v worldly_a man_n man_n that_o do_v mind_n the_o thing_n of_o the_o world_n only_o which_o make_v they_o grow_v crooked_a downward_o who_o make_v it_o their_o great_a work_n and_o only_o study_v because_o they_o place_v the_o only_a happiness_n in_o it_o and_o so_o spend_v and_o ravell_v out_o all_o their_o time_n and_o spin_v out_o all_o their_o bowel_n for_o the_o purchase_n and_o the_o get_n of_o worldly_a thing_n they_o be_v clean_o out_o of_o the_o way_n and_o mistake_v foul_o as_o the_o father_n speak_v vitam_fw-la beatam_fw-la quarunt_fw-la in_o region_fw-la mortis_fw-la it_o be_v a_o foul_a mistake_n to_o look_v to_o find_v heaven_n in_o hell_n happiness_n in_o misery_n such_o be_v they_o that_o mind_n nothing_o but_o worldly_a thing_n and_o they_o be_v clear_o to_o be_v reprove_v man_n of_o godly_a man_n 2._o the_o practice_n of_o the_o godly_a man_n here_o reprove_v there_o be_v many_o that_o do_v not_o only_o pretend_v to_o godliness_n but_o do_v participate_v it_o may_v be_v in_o some_o degree_n of_o godliness_n that_o be_v blame_v worthy_a too_o if_o our_o happiness_n lie_v not_o in_o worldly_a thing_n as_o it_o do_v not_o why_o then_o do_v godly_a man_n soul_n their_o hand_n and_o disparage_v their_o name_n in_o be_v so_o greedy_a in_o their_o pursuit_n of_o these_o worldly_a thing_n in_o be_v too_o have_v and_o take_v too_o much_o delight_n and_o contentment_n in_o they_o and_o be_v infinite_o grieve_v at_o the_o loss_n of_o they_o and_o so_o for_o all_o other_o the_o symptom_n which_o argue_v a_o adherency_n of_o the_o soul_n to_o they_o it_o argue_v a_o root_n of_o bitterness_n in_o they_o in_o some_o degree_n and_o that_o they_o place_v more_o happiness_n in_o these_o worldly_a thing_n than_o god_n will_v have_v they_o or_o then_o he_o ever_o do_v for_o every_o man_n do_v proportion_v his_o care_n in_o seek_v after_o any_o thing_n according_a to_o his_o estimation_n of_o the_o conjunction_n of_o that_o thing_n which_o he_o seek_v after_o with_o his_o happiness_n happiness_n be_v the_o end_n of_o all_o a_o man_n aim_n he_o will_v not_o mind_v over_o much_o or_o be_v greedy_a overmuch_o of_o any_o thing_n but_o that_o there_o be_v a_o secret_a estimation_n in_o a_o man_n breast_n that_o it_o be_v very_o near_o ally_v and_o of_o very_a near_o kin_n that_o which_o chrysostome_n say_v sometime_o that_o if_o he_o be_v the_o fit_a in_o the_o world_n to_o preach_v a_o sermon_n to_o the_o whole_a world_n gather_v together_o in_o one_o congregation_n happiness_n when_o they_o can_v make_v it_o good_a it_o be_v that_o which_o will_v make_v a_o sermon_n of_o a_o general_a reproof_n to_o all_o the_o world_n and_o come_v home_o to_o every_o one_o there_o pretence_n there_o 2._o but_o now_o to_o come_v to_o the_o second_o thing_n i_o propound_v which_o i_o will_v but_o brief_o touch_v on_o beside_o those_o practice_n man_n have_v pretence_n to_o excuse_v themselves_o upon_o some_o fair_a colour_n and_o such_o possible_o may_v be_v in_o they_o yet_o for_o all_o these_o pretence_n we_o may_v otherwise_o discern_v well_o enough_o that_o they_o place_v their_o happiness_n too_o much_o of_o it_o at_o least_o in_o these_o worldly_a thing_n yet_o that_o they_o may_v not_o deceive_v themselves_o we_o will_v examine_v they_o the_o best_a for_o i_o intend_v not_o to_o sift_v thing_n to_o the_o bran_n and_o to_o prosecute_v they_o so_o close_o in_o a_o word_n therefore_o for_o answer_n i_o shall_v give_v but_o a_o touch_n there_o be_v two_o thing_n that_o i_o desire_v every_o one_o to_o consider_v against_o all_o their_o pretence_n beside_o one_o thing_n which_o i_o desire_v may_v be_v consider_v in_o general_n i_o desire_v no_o man_n will_v deal_v with_o i_o or_o with_o any_o other_o that_o shall_v call_v on_o they_o to_o take_v heed_n of_o immoderate_a love_n of_o worldly_a thing_n or_o a_o immoderate_a prosecution_n of_o never_o be_v untie_v again_o if_o the_o match_n be_v once_o make_v between_o god_n and_o to_o he_o soul_n of_o a_o man_n that_o must_v continue_v which_o be_v the_o excellency_n of_o happiness_n for_o this_o be_v one_o main_a part_n of_o happiness_n that_o it_o shall_v never_o be_v lose_v and_o therefore_o where_o there_o be_v such_o riches_n in_o god_n and_o such_o all_o sufficiency_n as_o appear_v in_o the_o particular_a attribute_n before_o mention_v and_o such_o as_o we_o be_v capable_a of_o as_o be_v within_o the_o sphere_n of_o our_o nature_n capacity_n and_o so_o may_v be_v our_o good_a for_o nothing_o will_v make_v we_o happy_a but_o what_o be_v bonum_fw-la congruum_fw-la and_o where_o we_o may_v come_v to_o have_v sufficient_a conjunction_n with_o it_o a_o intimate_a and_o strong_a conjunction_n and_o indissoluble_a and_o inseparable_a and_o all_o this_o be_v in_o god_n there_o can_v be_v no_o hindrance_n but_o that_o god_n alone_o may_v nay_o god_n alone_o be_v the_o which_o flow_v out_o of_o many_o thing_n and_o be_v so_o often_o speak_v of_o be_v for_o the_o most_o part_n i_o say_v of_o frequent_a use_n and_o therefore_o if_o they_o be_v iterate_v it_o can_v be_v unnecessary_a as_o we_o see_v it_o there_o be_v some_o thing_n that_o be_v more_o necessary_a than_o other_o and_o we_o be_v not_o weary_a of_o use_v they_o often_o nay_o always_o and_o some_o thing_n though_o necessary_a yet_o if_o we_o use_v they_o always_o we_o shall_v grow_v weary_a of_o they_o as_o now_o if_o we_o use_v beef_n and_o mutton_n or_o any_o one_o such_o thing_n though_o these_o be_v the_o best_a we_o can_v hold_v long_a with_o yet_o if_o we_o use_v they_o always_o the_o stomach_n will_v be_v cloy_v and_o we_o shall_v grow_v weary_a of_o they_o but_o yet_o bread_n we_o be_v not_o weary_a of_o though_o we_o use_v it_o always_o nor_o drink_v we_o be_v not_o weary_a of_o use_v always_o what_o ever_o other_o cate_n or_o dainty_n we_o have_v yet_o these_o be_v common_a concommitant_n of_o all_o our_o eating_n and_o feast_n and_o so_o there_o be_v some_o thing_n in_o religion_n that_o man_n will_v be_v cloy_v with_o all_o with_o hear_v they_o often_o over_o and_o they_o count_v it_o tedious_a to_o have_v they_o often_o inculcate_v upon_o but_o yet_o there_o be_v some_o thing_n that_o be_v so_o necessary_a and_o we_o have_v such_o a_o immediate_a necessity_n of_o they_o that_o the_o state_n of_o our_o soul_n require_v that_o they_o shall_v often_o be_v inculcate_v on_o as_o the_o say_n be_v which_o i_o often_o use_v nanquam_fw-la nimis_fw-la dicitur_fw-la quod_fw-la nunquamm_n satis_fw-la discitur_fw-la we_o can_v never_o hear_v that_o too_o often_o that_o we_o can_v never_o learn_v too_o well_o and_o this_o be_v that_o we_o learn_v hence_o both_o who_o be_v the_o happy_a man_n and_o wherein_o happiness_n consist_v because_o there_o be_v so_o much_o blindness_n and_o darkness_n in_o the_o mind_n of_o man_n this_o way_n and_o man_n be_v so_o befool_v in_o their_o thought_n that_o though_o they_o be_v tell_v of_o it_o a_o thousand_o time_n yet_o they_o will_v relapse_n into_o the_o same_o error_n now_o to_o give_v a_o brief_a touch_n godly_a godly_a we_o see_v here_o that_o a_o godly_a man_n and_o even_o in_o the_o worst_a condition_n felicity_n felicity_n when_o he_o be_v at_o the_o low_a how_o ever_o man_n do_v they_o yet_o if_o they_o have_v god_n who_o be_v the_o all_o in_o all_o in_o point_n of_o happiness_n as_o this_o truth_n manife_v who_o can_v deny_v that_o they_o be_v happy_a man_n we_o see_v the_o star_n although_o we_o see_v they_o sometime_o in_o a_o puddle_n in_o the_o bottom_n of_o a_o well_o nay_o in_o a_o stink_a ditch_n yet_o the_o star_n although_o they_o reflect_v there_o have_v their_o situation_n in_o the_o heaven_n so_o it_o may_v be_v with_o a_o godly_a man_n we_o may_v see_v he_o in_o a_o miserable_a condition_n in_o a_o low_a condition_n for_o these_o worldly_a thing_n but_o yet_o for_o all_o that_o he_o be_v fix_v in_o the_o region_n of_o happiness_n so_o long_o as_o they_o retain_v the_o possession_n of_o god_n and_o the_o fruition_n of_o he_o that_o god_n own_v they_o and_o that_o they_o have_v commerce_n with_o he_o and_o communion_n with_o he_o it_o can_v be_v but_o that_o he_o that_o thus_o partake_v of_o god_n must_v partake_v also_o of_o happiness_n degree_n of_o sin_n and_o be_v stranger_n and_o alien_n from_o god_n suppose_v now_o such_o a_o one_o who_o have_v all_o those_o outward_a thing_n in_o such_o a_o manner_n that_o man_n at_o the_o first_o view_n do_v admire_v and_o envy_v and_o repine_v at_o the_o happiness_n of_o such_o a_o man_n yet_o if_o a_o man_n do_v consider_v well_o and_o view_v the_o state_n of_o that_o man_n he_o can_v conclude_v he_o to_o be_v a_o happy_a man_n alas_o this_o man_n be_v without_o god_n he_o have_v not_o the_o favour_n of_o god_n but_o god_n be_v his_o enemy_n and_o how_o can_v he_o be_v happy_a then_o as_o the_o father_n speak_v of_o ahab_n he_o describe_v he_o sit_v in_o his_o ivory_n palace_n in_o the_o time_n of_o the_o three_o year_n famine_n in_o samaria_n when_o that_o there_o be_v a_o want_n and_o scarcity_n of_o all_o thing_n by_o reason_n that_o it_o have_v not_o rain_v in_o three_o year_n say_v he_o he_o have_v gold_n and_o silver_n and_o jewel_n in_o every_o place_n but_o yet_o say_v he_o what_o good_a do_v all_o this_o to_o i_o so_o long_o as_o the_o heaven_n be_v as_o brass_n above_o and_o the_o earth_n as_o iron_n beneath_o and_o what_o good_a can_v all_o these_o worldly_a thing_n do_v to_o a_o man_n so_o long_o as_o the_o heaven_n be_v as_o brass_n so_o long_o as_o heaven_n be_v shut_v against_o he_o if_o god_n favour_n be_v not_o on_o he_o but_o his_o frown_n this_o must_v needs_o dash_v and_o mar_v all_o the_o mirth_n and_o happiness_n that_o he_o have_v in_o the_o midst_n of_o all_o earthly_a thing_n 2_o second_o who_o reprehension_n of_o the_o madness_n of_o wicked_a man_n who_o we_o may_v take_v up_o a_o other_o consideration_n from_o this_o and_o speak_v of_o it_o by_o way_n of_o reproof_n and_o lamentation_n and_o bewail_v here_o the_o vanity_n and_o misery_n of_o a_o great_a many_o not_o wicked_a man_n only_o but_o even_o godly_a man_n that_o see_v there_o be_v so_o much_o in_o god_n yet_o they_o make_v out_o so_o
little_a after_o god_n 1_o if_o we_o look_v upon_o worldly_a man_n happiness_n seek_v not_o god_n esteem_v he_o not_o as_o the_o only_a happiness_n we_o shall_v easy_o see_v this_o how_o far_o they_o be_v from_o seek_v god_n as_o the_o only_a happiness_n from_o esteem_v god_n and_o love_a god_n as_o the_o only_a happiness_n insomuch_o that_o they_o can_v be_v persuade_v to_o think_v that_o there_o be_v or_o can_v be_v any_o great_a happiness_n in_o he_o you_o shall_v hardly_o beat_v they_o out_o of_o it_o but_o that_o it_o be_v better_a to_o have_v so_o much_o gain_v such_o a_o revenue_n by_o the_o year_n then_o to_o have_v god_n for_o their_o friend_n they_o will_v hardly_o be_v beat_v out_o of_o these_o principal_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v no_o marvel_n no_o wonder_n if_o they_o turn_v a_o ace_n with_o god_n and_o be_v bold_a with_o sin_n to_o like_a violation_n of_o their_o peace_n with_o god_n to_o purchase_v that_o thing_n which_o they_o count_v more_o precious_a than_o god_n and_o to_o turn_v their_o back_n on_o god_n to_o get_v that_o which_o they_o count_v their_o happiness_n as_o suppose_v they_o think_v that_o gold_n or_o any_o such_o thing_n be_v the_o only_a way_n to_o make_v they_o happy_a then_o farewell_n god_n &_o hoc_fw-la primum_fw-la repetunt_fw-la opus_fw-la hoc_fw-la postremum_fw-la omittunt_fw-la they_o be_v all_o for_o this_o and_o therefore_o i_o say_v it_o be_v no_o wonder_n that_o these_o worldly_a man_n who_o never_o taste_v the_o sweetness_n of_o god_n do_v thus_o 2._o but_o this_o be_v the_o grief_n of_o heart_n and_o the_o greatness_n of_o the_o sin_n it_o of_o godly_a man_n that_o know_v it_o that_o those_o that_o be_v god_n servant_n that_o know_v the_o excellency_n that_o be_v in_o god_n and_o do_v pretend_v to_o it_o and_o profess_v that_o they_o believe_v that_o god_n be_v their_o only_a happiness_n it_o profess_v to_o believe_v it_o and_o that_o it_o consist_v in_o their_o communion_n and_o fellowship_n with_o he_o yet_o when_o all_o come_v to_o all_o they_o be_v so_o far_o carry_v away_o with_o the_o course_n of_o the_o world_n it_o yet_o neglect_v it_o that_o neglect_v god_n they_o seek_v after_o gewgaw_n and_o toy_n and_o place_n so_o much_o happiness_n in_o they_o and_o make_v so_o little_a after_o god_n though_o they_o profess_v otherwise_o and_o though_o they_o know_v otherwise_o it_o be_v not_o my_o jewel_n in_o my_o bosom_n or_o my_o curl_v or_o crisp_v my_o hair_n that_o make_v i_o a_o happy_a woman_n nor_o be_v it_o any_o of_o these_o gewgaw_n or_o toy_n happy_o will_n they_o say_v that_o make_v i_o happy_a but_o yet_o alas_o when_o all_o come_v to_o all_o they_o go_v as_o gaudy_a and_o as_o fantastic_a as_o any_o other_o and_o make_v so_o much_o of_o it_o and_o be_v as_o ready_a and_o as_o foolish_a to_o run_v to_o the_o same_o excess_n of_o riot_n as_o though_o god_n be_v not_o their_o ornament_n and_o their_o happiness_n if_o they_o do_v believe_v this_o and_o remember_v this_o that_o their_o happiness_n and_o excellency_n lie_v all_o in_o god_n though_o they_o may_v make_v use_n of_o other_o thing_n in_o a_o sober_a and_o a_o modest_a and_o exemplary_a way_n such_o as_o be_v fit_a to_o give_v a_o example_n to_o the_o world_n of_o extraordinary_a piety_n and_o sobriety_n in_o this_o course_n and_o with_o this_o caution_n i_o say_v though_o they_o may_v make_v use_n of_o any_o sober_a and_o modest_a way_n yet_o they_o will_v not_o go_v so_o vain_o and_o fond_o and_o gaudy_o and_o place_n so_o much_o happiness_n in_o these_o thing_n do_v they_o believe_v this_o that_o their_o happiness_n lie_v in_o god_n and_o sure_o it_o argue_v that_o they_o have_v not_o that_o high_a esteem_n of_o god_n and_o that_o they_o repose_v so_o much_o confidence_n in_o he_o as_o in_o their_o only_a happiness_n they_o will_v not_o else_o be_v so_o fond_a of_o so_o foolish_a thing_n for_o it_o be_v a_o thing_n incompatible_a with_o a_o mind_n that_o be_v full_o possess_v with_o the_o excellency_n of_o god_n which_o if_o we_o have_v it_o will_v make_v we_o look_v a_o squint_a on_o all_o other_o thing_n even_o the_o best_a thing_n and_o much_o more_o on_o thing_n of_o a_o inferior_a nature_n yet_o i_o say_v this_o folly_n of_o many_o professor_n that_o they_o place_v so_o much_o in_o these_o poor_a thing_n and_o it_o be_v a_o thing_n to_o be_v bewail_v 3_o but_o to_o come_v to_o that_o which_o i_o aim_v at_o most_o weak_a exhortation_n to_o the_o weak_a and_o which_o be_v indeed_o the_o principal_a viz._n the_o matter_n of_o exhortation_n that_o we_o will_v every_o one_o of_o we_o see_v the_o main_a of_o our_o happiness_n lie_v in_o god_n and_o so_o much_o of_o it_o that_o he_o alone_o can_v make_v we_o happy_a if_o we_o can_v but_o get_v he_o and_o enjoy_v he_o and_o walk_v in_o a_o sweet_a and_o holy_a communion_n with_o he_o that_o will_v make_v we_o happy_a though_o we_o have_v nothing_o else_o in_o the_o world_n though_o we_o be_v cut_v off_o from_o all_o other_o thing_n than_o i_o shall_v entreat_v to_o make_v way_n by_o certain_a step_n and_o degree_n to_o what_o i_o aim_v at_o and_o 1_o that_o all_o christian_n will_v understand_v this_o truth_n it_o understand_v it_o i_o know_v there_o be_v many_o other_o thing_n in_o religion_n necessary_a to_o be_v know_v but_o i_o only_o mention_v these_o step_n which_o otherwise_o i_o be_o not_o to_o dwell_v on_o but_o to_o arise_v high_a and_o ascend_v by_o these_o many_o man_n i_o know_v count_v many_o thing_n in_o religion_n and_o many_o thing_n that_o be_v deliver_v and_o so_o this_o to_o be_v but_o paradox_n and_o the_o conceit_n of_o man_n brain_n the_o fancy_n of_o some_o contemplative_a person_n that_o live_v retire_v and_o do_v not_o know_v what_o belong_v to_o the_o world_n and_o true_o for_o my_o own_o part_n i_o will_v never_o decline_v the_o imputation_n of_o be_v subject_a to_o such_o weakness_n if_o man_n will_v so_o term_v it_o as_o there_o be_v no_o man_n but_o have_v his_o fail_n and_o his_o error_n but_o yet_o if_o this_o be_v truth_n of_o god_n and_o in_o his_o word_n than_o i_o suppose_v we_o be_v out_o of_o any_o danger_n of_o be_v question_v for_o fantastic_a or_o foolish_a or_o paradoxall_a conceit_n deliver_v that_o which_o we_o have_v receive_v from_o god_n and_o i_o will_v desire_v every_o one_o but_o to_o consider_v and_o take_v notice_n of_o this_o truth_n not_o as_o the_o fancy_n of_o a_o man_n but_o as_o a_o truth_n that_o be_v divine_a and_o as_o the_o word_n of_o god_n that_o god_n alone_o can_v make_v a_o man_n happy_a though_o a_o man_n have_v nothing_o else_o understand_v this_o and_o take_v notice_n of_o and_o think_v on_o this_o truth_n it_o believe_v it_o 2_o believe_v it_o bring_v your_o heart_n to_o assent_v and_o adhere_v unto_o it_o do_v not_o stand_v out_o in_o distinction_n or_o in_o staggering_n with_o this_o truth_n or_o speak_v against_o it_o or_o find_v some_o evasion_n or_o declination_n to_o avoid_v it_o but_o receive_v this_o truth_n and_o embrace_v it_o by_o a_o firm_a and_o steadfast_a faith_n it_o be_v not_o to_o be_v expect_v though_o this_o good_a word_n of_o god_n be_v for_o my_o good_a may_v serve_v for_o a_o good_a end_n viz._n to_o press_v the_o endeavour_v many_o thing_n in_o my_o practice_n yet_o i_o say_v it_o be_v not_o expect_v that_o it_o shall_v do_v this_o except_o it_o be_v embrace_v by_o faith_n believe_v this_o therefore_o that_o be_v the_o second_o step_n i_o will_v desire_v every_o one_o to_o bring_v their_o heart_n to_o this_o truth_n and_o believe_v this_o and_o receive_v it_o as_o a_o reality_n it_o ponder_v it_o 3_o ponder_n on_o it_o and_o consider_v it_o and_o meditate_v upon_o it_o to_o chew_v it_o up_o and_o down_o in_o their_o mouth_n and_o in_o their_o mind_n many_o truth_n there_o be_v that_o have_v a_o swim_a motion_n in_o our_o head_n but_o there_o be_v no_o decoction_n of_o this_o truth_n and_o we_o be_v not_o the_o better_a for_o they_o because_o we_o do_v not_o ruminate_v on_o they_o and_o chew_v they_o that_o we_o do_v not_o turn_v they_o into_o nutriment_n as_o you_o know_v it_o be_v with_o meat_n which_o a_o man_n will_v put_v into_o his_o belly_n if_o it_o be_v not_o prepare_v some_o way_n as_o boil_a or_o roast_v or_o some_o such_o fit_a it_o will_v not_o turn_v to_o nutriment_n but_o rather_o turn_v to_o disease_n in_o the_o stomach_n and_o so_o it_o be_v oftentimes_o that_o many_o truth_n that_o a_o man_n understand_v to_o be_v truth_n for_o want_v of_o ruminate_v and_o chew_v they_o do_v not_o turn_v to_o spiritual_a nutriment_n to_o breed_v any_o good_a spirit_n any_o good_a blood_n
i_o will_v desire_v every_o man_n therefore_o ever_o and_o anon_o to_o ponder_v on_o this_o truth_n and_o meditate_v on_o it_o be_v this_o a_o certain_a truth_n that_o there_o be_v such_o a_o compendious_a way_n to_o happiness_n that_o although_o i_o go_v not_o from_o the_o east_n to_o the_o west_n indies_n and_o fetch_v all_o the_o commodity_n to_o bring_v in_o gain_n daily_o bring_v in_o such_o a_o estate_n to_o i_o yet_o if_o i_o sit_v still_o and_o only_o take_v care_n to_o walk_v with_o god_n and_o make_v god_n i_o if_o i_o can_v but_o get_v he_o and_o come_v to_o possess_v my_o soul_n of_o he_o and_o have_v a_o fruition_n of_o he_o this_o will_v make_v i_o happy_a alone_o i_o will_v desire_v man_n to_o consider_v this_o and_o to_o ponder_v and_o meditate_v upon_o this_o 5_o and_o then_o in_o the_o last_o place_n it_o walk_v in_o the_o strength_n of_o it_o i_o will_v but_o only_o mention_v all_o these_o step_n let_v we_o carry_v ourselves_o in_o the_o virtue_n and_o strength_n of_o this_o truth_n in_o the_o way_n that_o this_o truth_n thus_o know_v and_o believe_v and_o think_v on_o will_v bring_v we_o unto_o and_o force_v we_o to_o go_v let_v we_o do_v these_o thing_n that_o may_v express_v our_o apprehension_n of_o this_o truth_n and_o our_o belief_n of_o it_o and_o our_o think_v on_o it_o this_o be_v the_o main_a thing_n i_o aim_v at_o let_v we_o live_v as_o those_o do_v and_o as_o those_o can_v choose_v but_o do_v that_o do_v know_v and_o believe_v and_o think_v on_o this_o truth_n now_o there_o be_v but_o three_o thing_n wherein_o we_o shall_v express_v the_o reality_n that_o we_o do_v know_v and_o that_o we_o do_v believe_v and_o that_o we_o do_v ponder_v and_o think_v on_o this_o truth_n and_o not_o cast_v it_o far_o from_o our_o eye_n i_o say_v we_o shall_v express_v it_o in_o these_o three_o thing_n according_a to_o the_o several_a rank_n and_o degree_n of_o man_n shall_v they_o that_o yet_o be_v not_o in_o possession_n of_o god_n shall_v 1_o first_o of_o all_o be_v there_o any_o man_n that_o be_v not_o yet_o in_o the_o possession_n of_o god_n that_o be_v yet_o without_o god_n in_o the_o world_n such_o as_o have_v no_o interest_n in_o he_o no_o relation_n unto_o he_o no_o assurance_n of_o his_o favour_n if_o this_o be_v a_o truth_n that_o in_o his_o favour_n be_v life_n and_o that_o all_o our_o happiness_n be_v bind_v up_o in_o he_o then_o those_o that_o know_v and_o believe_v and_o think_v on_o this_o truth_n shall_v seek_v after_o god_n and_o endeavour_v to_o make_v god_n they_o to_o come_v in_o and_o lie_v hold_v on_o god_n to_o come_v into_o covenant_n with_o god_n to_o come_v out_o of_o their_o sinful_a course_n and_o to_o repent_v of_o their_o evil_a way_n and_o to_o make_v their_o peace_n with_o god_n and_o set_v themselves_o to_o walk_v with_o he_o he_o seek_v after_o he_o so_o that_o this_o be_v the_o first_o sort_n of_o man_n we_o have_v to_o deal_v withal_o if_o there_o be_v any_o here_o that_o be_v not_o yet_o god_n nor_o he_o they_o that_o be_v not_o in_o covenant_n with_o he_o nor_o have_v a_o interest_n in_o he_o nor_o have_v any_o assurance_n of_o his_o favour_n nor_o any_o ground_n of_o any_o such_o assurance_n let_v this_o be_v a_o incitement_n to_o induce_v they_o to_o make_v it_o the_o first_o thing_n that_o they_o do_v to_o lay_v hold_n on_o god_n believe_v in_o he_o submit_v yourselves_o to_o his_o service_n repent_v of_o all_o your_o evil_a way_n and_o come_v into_o the_o service_n of_o god_n only_o let_v i_o add_v something_o by_o way_n of_o caution_n though_o we_o all_o profess_v the_o name_n of_o god_n yet_o i_o persuade_v myself_o there_o be_v none_o here_o that_o be_v so_o charitable_a to_o think_v that_o all_o that_o be_v within_o the_o pale_a of_o the_o church_n have_v real_a interest_n in_o and_o real_a possession_n of_o god_n many_o be_v call_v but_o few_o choose_v and_o i_o think_v no_o man_n will_v hold_v this_o in_o general_a uncharitable_a though_o when_o a_o man_n shall_v fall_v to_o deal_v with_o particular_n perhaps_o there_o he_o may_v transgress_v the_o bound_n of_o charity_n but_o i_o say_v in_o the_o general_a there_o be_v no_o man_n will_v question_v it_o and_o therefore_o be_v to_o speak_v in_o such_o a_o place_n of_o this_o argument_n where_o we_o suppose_v there_o be_v a_o great_a many_o that_o have_v real_a interest_n in_o god_n yet_o we_o can_v expect_v that_o all_o have_v so_o the_o thing_n therefore_o will_v not_o be_v in_o vain_a to_o give_v some_o caution_n 1_o take_v heed_n that_o they_o do_v not_o presume_v that_o they_o be_v god_n and_o hate_v the_o profession_n of_o he_o not_o presume_v not_o and_o have_v a_o interest_n in_o he_o without_o sufficient_a ground_n and_o warrant_n there_o be_v many_o thing_n that_o lift_v man_n vain_o up_o in_o their_o presumption_n this_o way_n brief_o to_o mention_v some_o few_o 1_o many_o man_n be_v presumptuous_a of_o god_n and_o of_o his_o favour_n fortune_n upon_o good_n of_o fortune_n upon_o the_o most_o unworthy_a ground_n that_o can_v be_v i_o mean_v not_o worthy_a to_o be_v name_v among_o christian_n as_o a_o ground_n of_o god_n favour_n i_o mean_v riches_n and_o outward_a estate_n they_o presume_v on_o this_o as_o a_o sign_n of_o god_n favour_n suppose_v if_o god_n do_v not_o love_v they_o how_o shall_v he_o prosper_v they_o so_o whereas_o they_o see_v that_o many_o man_n that_o pretend_v more_o to_o religion_n than_o they_o do_v and_o be_v more_o busy_a in_o religious_a way_n and_o course_n than_o they_o be_v yet_o notwithstanding_o they_o have_v a_o great_a deal_n more_o and_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n rich_a and_o more_o prosperous_a than_o they_o be_v and_o therefore_o they_o be_v ready_a to_o bless_v themselves_o but_o this_o be_v so_o fond_a and_o foolish_a a_o ground_n to_o presume_v upon_o as_o it_o be_v unworthy_a to_o be_v mention_v among_o man_n much_o less_o among_o christian_n i_o beseech_v you_o let_v no_o man_n be_v so_o foolish_a nor_o so_o ignorant_a in_o the_o way_n of_o god_n as_o to_o think_v that_o a_o great_a estate_n be_v a_o argument_n of_o god_n real_a favour_n god_n many_o time_n debar_v his_o servant_n and_o child_n of_o those_o outward_a thing_n and_o many_o time_n load_v his_o enemy_n with_o they_o as_o you_o know_v it_o be_v in_o another_o case_n those_o sheep_n and_o ox_n that_o be_v to_o be_v fat_v for_o the_o slaughter_n shall_v be_v sure_a to_o be_v put_v in_o the_o best_a pasture_n whereas_o those_o that_o be_v to_o live_v be_v lay_v up_o perhaps_o in_o a_o poor_a or_o no_o pasture_n and_o so_o it_o be_v in_o this_o case_n those_o that_o god_n preserve_v for_o heaven_n reserve_v to_o eternal_a glory_n may_v be_v and_o often_o be_v in_o a_o mean_a condition_n on_o earth_n whereas_o those_o that_o he_o fatten_v for_o eternal_a fire_n for_o the_o day_n of_o destruction_n the_o day_n of_o slaughter_n be_v it_o may_v be_v fat_a feed_v here_o i_o hope_v there_o be_v no_o man_n therefore_o in_o this_o assembly_n that_o will_v be_v so_o foolish_a as_o to_o be_v carry_v away_o with_o these_o to_o think_v that_o because_o he_o be_v in_o great_a estate_n and_o have_v more_o riches_n he_o be_v therefore_o in_o god_n favour_n church_n upon_o the_o bound_n of_o the_o church_n and_o again_o many_o man_n be_v ready_a to_o presume_v because_o they_o be_v in_o the_o bound_n of_o the_o church_n as_o they_o reply_v to_o our_o saviour_n have_v not_o we_o hear_v thou_o preach_v in_o our_o street_n yet_o say_v our_o saviour_n i_o know_v you_o not_o it_o be_v no_o argument_n that_o a_o man_n be_v in_o god_n favour_n because_o god_n have_v make_v a_o man_n so_o happy_a as_o that_o he_o have_v be_v bear_v in_o the_o bosom_n of_o the_o church_n of_o god_n and_o have_v be_v acquaint_v with_o the_o mean_n of_o grace_n and_o have_v be_v a_o partaker_n of_o the_o ordinance_n as_o i_o have_v say_v divers_a time_n on_o other_o occasion_n there_o may_v be_v find_v some_o filth_n under_o the_o stone_n of_o the_o temple_n under_o the_o church_n building_n so_o there_o may_v be_v as_o filthy_a and_o as_o odious_a person_n to_o god_n live_v under_o the_o ordinance_n and_o in_o the_o church_n as_o any_o other_o and_o therefore_o let_v no_o man_n presume_v on_o this_o build_v on_o this_o that_o he_o be_v in_o god_n favour_n because_o god_n have_v give_v he_o this_o happiness_n make_v he_o so_o happy_a as_o to_o be_v bear_v within_o the_o church_n of_o god_n 3_o let_v no_o man_n presume_v on_o common_a gift_n gift_n upon_o common_a gift_n there_o be_v some_o gift_n even_o in_o the_o church_n of_o god_n and_o such_o as_o
yet_o more_o often_o bestow_v yet_o more_o time_n in_o meditate_v upon_o our_o way_n reinforcing_a reinforcing_a and_o reinforcing_a ourselves_o upon_o new_a resolution_n humble_v ourselves_o for_o what_o we_o have_v fail_v and_o even_o as_o a_o horse_n will_v do_v after_o every_o stumble_a make_v so_o much_o more_o speed_n so_o after_o all_o our_o stumbling_n and_o fail_n let_v we_o recover_v and_o enforce_v ourselves_o so_o much_o the_o more_o to_o omit_v all_o extraordinary_a case_n and_o extraordinary_a person_n and_o extraordinary_a time_n and_o motion_n of_o god_n spirit_n and_o all_o other_o extraordinary_a occasion_n we_o must_v take_v this_o course_n of_o serious_a examination_n and_o strong_a resolution_n execution_n speedy_a execution_n 3_o and_o then_o there_o remain_v nothing_o but_o speedy_a execution_n to_o let_v upon_o this_o which_o be_v the_o three_o thing_n in_o the_o generality_n and_o which_o i_o will_v express_v a_o little_a more_o particular_o and_o there_o be_v but_o two_o thing_n that_o i_o will_v mention_v as_o most_o considerable_o helpful_a to_o set_v a_o man_n upon_o and_o strengthen_v he_o in_o a_o way_n of_o obedience_n special_a in_o all-knowing_a knowledge_n that_o he_o take_v a_o account_n of_o all_o a_o man_n way_n and_o all_o his_o action_n and_o this_o will_v work_v a_o holy_a fear_n of_o his_o majesty_n and_o that_o holy_a fear_n will_v put_v it_o upon_o holy_a obedience_n increase_v also_o your_o love_n and_o sweet_a affection_n towards_o god_n labour_v to_o see_v love_n love_n not_o only_a excellency_n to_o astonish_v but_o beauty_n in_o god_n to_o move_v we_o to_o love_n and_o sweetness_n to_o inflame_v our_o love_n labour_v to_o see_v all_o the_o goodness_n and_o sweetness_n that_o be_v in_o he_o and_o this_o will_v wonderful_o raise_v our_o thought_n to_o love_v he_o and_o that_o love_v infinite_o set_v we_o on_o in_o a_o way_n of_o obedience_n to_o he_o this_o i_o say_v will_v be_v a_o great_a help_n for_o the_o truth_n be_v nothing_o in_o this_o kind_n come_v off_o handsome_o from_o we_o if_o it_o come_v not_o from_o love_n it_o be_v against_o the_o hair_n if_o it_o come_v not_o from_o a_o principle_n of_o love_n whereas_o on_o the_o otherside_n as_o the_o say_n be_v marti_fw-la arma_fw-la non_fw-la sunt_fw-la onera_fw-la the_o commandment_n of_o god_n will_v not_o be_v burdensome_a to_o we_o if_o we_o love_v god_n so_o that_o now_o the_o increase_a and_o the_o renew_n of_o every_o one_o of_o these_o former_a thing_n will_v be_v a_o mean_n to_o set_v we_o upon_o obedience_n for_o every_o one_o of_o they_o seru_v proportionable_o for_o the_o water_v of_o the_o very_a root_n of_o obedience_n to_o make_v it_o thrive_v and_o prosper_v though_o i_o do_v not_o now_o for_o it_o be_v not_o necessary_a if_o i_o will_v make_v a_o young_a tree_n grow_v that_o i_o have_v plant_v that_o i_o shall_v go_v to_o the_o top_n or_o bough_n of_o the_o tree_n and_o cast_v water_n there_o it_o be_v but_o frivolous_a for_o it_o suffice_v to_o cast_v the_o water_n at_o the_o root_n for_o it_o be_v the_o root_n that_o nourish_v all_o the_o branch_n and_o all_o the_o sap_n it_o be_v first_o at_o the_o root_n and_o so_o convey_v to_o the_o bough_n and_o branch_n so_o it_o be_v in_o this_o case_n i_o do_v not_o speak_v of_o water_v the_o top_n of_o obedience_n to_o make_v it_o flourish_v outward_o but_o water_n the_o root_n with_o this_o knowledge_n and_o these_o affection_n which_o be_v the_o root_n of_o all_o the_o action_n of_o obedience_n and_o then_o there_o will_v natural_o issue_v forth_o the_o fruit_n of_o obedience_n for_o if_o these_o be_v keep_v well_o and_o strong_a if_o these_o be_v renew_v and_o further_v the_o other_o will_v be_v a_o natural_a issue_n out_o of_o it_o 2._o but_o yet_o to_o speak_v a_o little_a more_o particular_o these_o exercise_v these_o the_o main_a thing_n that_o will_v help_v we_o in_o obedience_n be_v the_o very_a act_n and_o exercise_v of_o obedience_n every_o act_n be_v strengthen_v and_o every_o habit_n be_v strengthen_v by_o the_o exercise_n of_o many_o act_n of_o that_o habit_n and_o it_o grow_v to_o be_v strengthen_v by_o frequent_a use_n obedience_n be_v a_o thing_n that_o can_v be_v otherwise_o strengthen_v but_o only_o by_o mere_a practice_n so_o that_o this_o be_v the_o main_n viz._n the_o set_n upon_o the_o work_n not_o only_o meditate_v and_o ponder_v upon_o it_o and_o think_v what_o i_o ought_v to_o do_v to_o obey_v god_n but_o when_o i_o do_v know_v what_o his_o will_n be_v i_o must_v set_v upon_o the_o do_n of_o it_o i_o must_v not_o dispute_v about_o the_o thing_n but_o fall_v upon_o the_o do_n of_o the_o thing_n which_o i_o know_v i_o ought_v to_o do_v and_o now_o in_o this_o there_o be_v two_o thing_n some_o thing_n must_v be_v take_v heed_n of_o that_o will_v hinder_v we_o in_o the_o practice_n of_o obedience_n heed_n take_v heed_n and_o some_o thing_n that_o we_o must_v take_v care_n of_o that_o will_v exceed_o further_o we_o in_o a_o course_n of_o obedience_n i_o will_v but_o touch_v upon_o some_o few_o thing_n in_o either_o reason_v take_v heed_n of_o such_o carnal_a thing_n carnal_a of_o carnal_a as_o will_v choke_v we_o in_o the_o very_a thought_n when_o we_o be_v to_o go_v about_o a_o course_n of_o obedience_n i_o say_v will_v choke_v the_o very_a thought_n as_o 1._o carnal_a reason_n it_o be_v a_o wonderful_a thing_n to_o see_v and_o yet_o no_o wonder_n when_o we_o consider_v our_o natural_a condition_n how_o many_o thing_n will_v boil_v as_o it_o be_v out_o of_o the_o heart_n how_o many_o foolish_a excuse_n and_o how_o many_o vain_a pretence_n to_o keep_v a_o man_n off_o from_o duty_n when_o a_o man_n have_v some_o thought_n to_o go_v about_o it_o as_o when_o a_o man_n have_v some_o thought_n to_o go_v and_o hear_v the_o word_n of_o god_n then_o arise_v such_o a_o hinder_v think_v as_o thus_o i_o can_v sit_v at_o home_n and_o read_v the_o while_n and_o save_v my_o labour_n of_o go_v i_o know_v what_o the_o minister_n will_v say_v viz._n that_o it_o be_v but_o faith_n and_o obedience_n we_o must_v labour_v for_o and_o so_o many_o other_o thing_n there_o infinite_a reach_a and_o rack_a a_o man_n wit_n to_o make_v excuse_n some_o thought_n of_o other_o be_v in_o the_o way_n either_o it_o be_v not_o now_o time_n or_o some_o thing_n else_o there_o be_v always_o some_o dispute_v that_o reason_n will_v suggest_v by_o which_o we_o contradict_v our_o intent_n and_o choke_v our_o purpose_n of_o do_v this_o or_o that_o duty_n take_v heed_n therefore_o
