speak_v particular_o of_o they_o i_o shall_v content_v myself_o only_o with_o a_o brief_a touch_n of_o they_o we_o see_v all_o the_o opinion_n of_o philosopher_n &_o all_o their_o knowledge_n clean_o out_o of_o the_o way_n yea_o and_o the_o wisdom_n of_o all_o natural_a man_n be_v too_o shallow_a by_o far_o and_o all_o natural_a ability_n to_o come_v to_o show_v steady_o wherein_o true_a they_o have_v not_o light_a enough_o to_o do_v it_o in_o the_o second_o place_n to_o mention_v that_o which_o be_v not_o so_o far_o out_o of_o the_o way_n we_o will_v not_o meddle_v here_o now_o with_o philosopher_n professor_n godly_a professor_n 2._o it_o may_v convince_v the_o error_n of_o godly_a professor_n and_o of_o those_o that_o pretend_v to_o christianity_n and_o have_v more_o than_o natural_a man_n be_v alienate_v from_o they_o in_o their_o principle_n yet_o even_o among_o they_o will_v appear_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o the_o relic_n of_o that_o wound_n by_o that_o blow_n which_o our_o nature_n receive_v by_o our_o fall_n in_o this_o i_o shall_v bring_v the_o application_n near_o to_o ourselves_o we_o may_v see_v here_o our_o blindness_n in_o this_o by_o the_o experience_n of_o all_o christian_n and_o in_o some_o degree_n of_o the_o best_a sort_n too_o who_o be_v there_o that_o do_v not_o place_n too_o much_o in_o these_o worldly_a thing_n that_o have_v not_o too_o high_a a_o esteem_n and_o make_v too_o precious_a account_n of_o they_o and_o do_v not_o retain_v many_o time_n in_o his_o mind_n and_o nourish_v too_o some_o secret_a thought_n at_o least_o that_o there_o be_v some_o extraordinary_a virtue_n in_o those_o thing_n to_o make_v a_o man_n happy_a there_o be_v many_o character_n that_o do_v evident_o discover_v the_o relic_n of_o there_o pretence_n there_o 2._o but_o now_o to_o come_v to_o the_o second_o thing_n i_o propound_v which_o i_o will_v but_o brief_o touch_v on_o beside_o those_o practice_n man_n have_v pretence_n to_o excuse_v themselves_o upon_o some_o fair_a colour_n and_o such_o possible_o may_v be_v in_o they_o yet_o for_o all_o these_o pretence_n we_o may_v otherwise_o discern_v well_o enough_o that_o they_o place_v their_o happiness_n too_o much_o of_o it_o at_o least_o in_o these_o worldly_a thing_n yet_o that_o they_o may_v not_o deceive_v themselves_o we_o will_v examine_v they_o the_o best_a plea_n of_o all_o be_v that_o they_o do_v but_o make_v conscience_n of_o their_o duty_n we_o be_v to_o seek_v these_o worldly_a thing_n in_o some_o measure_n because_o god_n appoint_v every_o one_o to_o do_v it_o and_o the_o hand_n of_o the_o diligent_a shall_v make_v rich_a god_n have_v make_v we_o our_o own_o executioner_n our_o own_o instrument_n to_o be_v fabir_n fortunae_fw-la in_o some_o sense_n to_o be_v server_n of_o ourselves_o and_o to_o help_v ourselves_o with_o the_o necessary_n of_o this_o life_n and_o the_o consideration_n of_o a_o man_n charge_n and_o family_n and_o estate_n and_o such_o like_a will_v afford_v a_o man_n plausible_a gloss_n and_o probable_a argument_n to_o defend_v themselves_o even_o those_o that_o be_v most_o deep_o taint_v with_o this_o poison_n and_o guilty_a of_o this_o fault_n yet_o think_v to_o wind_v out_o of_o all_o reproof_n and_o escape_v the_o blow_n thereof_o with_o such_o fair_a pretence_n but_o brief_o in_o a_o word_n for_o answer_v for_o i_o intend_v not_o to_o sift_v thing_n to_o the_o bran_n and_o to_o prosecute_v they_o so_o close_o in_o a_o word_n therefore_o for_o answer_n i_o shall_v give_v but_o a_o touch_n there_o be_v two_o thing_n that_o i_o desire_v every_o one_o to_o consider_v against_o all_o their_o pretence_n beside_o one_o thing_n which_o i_o desire_v may_v be_v consider_v in_o general_n i_o desire_v no_o man_n will_v deal_v with_o i_o or_o with_o any_o other_o that_o shall_v call_v on_o they_o to_o take_v heed_n of_o immoderate_a love_n of_o worldly_a thing_n or_o a_o immoderate_a prosecution_n of_o they_o i_o say_v not_o deal_v with_o we_o as_o many_o will_v deal_v with_o man_n for_o though_o man_n have_v no_o such_o art_n as_o to_o enter_v into_o the_o heart_n of_o man_n man_n have_v not_o a_o window_n
we_o nourish_v such_o a_o erroneous_a thought_n that_o this_o be_v the_o only_a happiness_n minister_n may_v talk_v what_o they_o will_v they_o disparage_v riches_n and_o honour_n etc._n etc._n that_o have_v it_o not_o themselves_o they_o disparage_v pleasure_n that_o have_v not_o be_v acquaint_v with_o it_o but_o yet_o when_o all_o be_v do_v happiness_n lie_v in_o these_o thing_n for_o so_o long_o as_o there_o be_v such_o a_o root_n of_o bitterness_n within_o we_o such_o a_o corrupt_a opinion_n it_o will_v not_o only_o overflow_v like_o the_o gall_n to_o embitter_v and_o poison_v our_o affection_n but_o also_o our_o action_n and_o so_o all_o thing_n will_v be_v disorder_v as_o in_o a_o watch_n if_o the_o spring_n wheel_n be_v out_o of_o frame_n all_o run_v wrong_a so_o if_o this_o be_v poison_v all_o will_v be_v in_o danger_n the_o very_a spring_n of_o every_o thing_n in_o a_o man_n be_v a_o man_n judgement_n and_o if_o that_o be_v taint_v and_o corrupt_v that_o will_v soon_o corrupt_v and_o poison_v our_o affection_n and_o our_o action_n for_o there_o be_v a_o natural_a connexion_n between_o they_o and_o the_o intellectual_a part_n be_v the_o guide_a part_n of_o all_o the_o rest_n and_o therefore_o if_o you_o will_v keep_v all_o the_o rest_n aright_o that_o your_o action_n may_v be_v moderate_a and_o your_o affection_n may_v be_v moderate_a you_o must_v labour_v to_o get_v and_o keep_v moderate_a opinion_n moderate_a your_o apprehension_n of_o they_o think_v not_o too_o high_o of_o they_o but_o rather_o think_v on_o these_o thing_n that_o may_v most_o of_o all_o disparage_v they_o and_o block_n they_o and_o take_v off_o the_o beauty_n of_o they_o and_o that_o glory_n that_o be_v on_o they_o that_o may_v dazzle_v our_o eye_n learn_v to_o abate_v the_o world_n in_o our_o prosecution_n of_o it_o in_o our_o action_n in_o our_o affection_n and_o in_o our_o estimation_n this_o be_v the_o first_o thing_n that_o we_o may_v learn_v from_o this_o 2._o if_o this_o be_v so_o then_o as_o we_o must_v learn_v to_o abate_v what_o possible_o we_o may_v abate_v our_o action_n thing_n translate_v to_o better_a thing_n affection_n and_o estimation_n of_o this_o world_n so_o in_o the_o second_o place_n let_v we_o take_v a_o hint_n from_o hence_o to_o translate_v all_o these_o above_o these_o earthly_a thing_n and_o set_v they_o upon_o those_o thing_n in_o which_o indeed_o our_o felicity_n lie_v if_o felicity_n be_v not_o in_o this_o world_n and_o if_o happiness_n be_v not_o in_o these_o worldly_a thing_n it_o be_v no_o inconsequent_a counsel_n but_o we_o have_v show_v it_o do_v not_o lie_v in_o these_o worldly_a thing_n it_o lie_v therefore_o in_o some_o other_o and_o we_o have_v mistake_v the_o box_n all_o this_o while_n and_o take_v quid_fw-la pro_fw-la quo_fw-la as_o the_o say_n be_v then_o let_v we_o translate_v our_o affection_n which_o we_o have_v spill_v upon_o these_o earthly_a thing_n and_o place_v they_o upon_o better_a thing_n in_o which_o our_o felicity_n lie_v translate_v they_o upon_o god_n upon_o heaven_n holiness_n god_n heaven_n holiness_n upon_o holiness_n these_o be_v undoubted_a felicity_n and_o the_o way_n unto_o it_o the_o other_o thing_n of_o this_o world_n be_v nothing_o near_o the_o thing_n happiness_n itself_o no_o nor_o the_o way_n unto_o it_o but_o those_o be_v undoubted_o such_o and_o therefore_o they_o be_v worthy_a to_o possess_v and_o inherit_v all_o those_o excellency_n of_o our_o judgement_n and_o affection_n and_o action_n and_o the_o stream_n of_o they_o shall_v run_v current_o after_o heavenly_a thing_n but_o i_o shall_v touch_v on_o these_o thing_n more_o when_o i_o come_v to_o the_o next_o point_n 3._o moderate_a moderate_a labour_v to_o moderate_v our_o joy_n and_o our_o sorrow_n and_o moderate_a our_o heart_n and_o compose_v they_o aright_o in_o many_o case_n which_o do_v depend_v upon_o this_o truth_n and_o principle_n and_o for_o want_v of_o which_o many_o do_v oppress_v themselves_o and_o afflict_v themselves_o very_o unworthy_o and_o undecent_o 1._o learn_v then_o here_o first_o to_o moderate_v our_o grief_n and_o sorrow_n in_o a_o double_a case_n of_o grief_n of_o first_o of_o want_n second_o of_o loss_n 1._o suppose_v we_o want_v these_o worldly_a thing_n want_n want_n let_v we_o not_o be_v over_o sorrowful_a and_o hang_v down_o the_o head_n because_o we_o be_v at_o a_o low_a ebb_n in_o these_o worldly_a thing_n remember_v this_o to_o moderate_v it_o my_o felicity_n be_v not_o in_o this_o thing_n nor_o any_o part_n of_o it_o no_o nor_o any_o way_n unto_o it_o and_o therefore_o i_o can_v spare_v they_o and_o be_v without_o they_o if_o god_n do_v think_v it_o fit_a i_o can_v live_v well_o without_o they_o i_o can_v well_o afford_v to_o want_v they_o since_o i_o lose_v never_o a_o whit_n of_o my_o felicity_n by_o they_o it_o be_v neither_o annihilate_v nor_o eclipse_v by_o the_o want_n of_o they_o let_v we_o not_o therefore_o our_o heart_n in_o this_o case_n it_o be_v true_a i_o have_v lose_v but_o i_o have_v not_o lose_v so_o much_o of_o my_o blood_n or_o my_o special_a happiness_n no_o nor_o any_o thing_n that_o be_v essential_a or_o ritual_a to_o it_o and_o may_v not_o a_o man_n comfort_v himself_o in_o such_o a_o case_n as_o this_o suppose_v a_o man_n have_v be_v in_o travel_n upon_o the_o way_n and_o have_v meet_v with_o thief_n and_o he_o have_v some_o loose_a money_n in_o his_o pocket_n but_o have_v in_o a_o private_a place_n which_o the_o thief_n be_v not_o aware_a of_o some_o precious_a jewel_n and_o the_o thief_n shall_v come_v and_o take_v away_o only_a the_o loose_a money_n and_o not_o find_v his_o jewel_n will_v that_o man_n rejoice_v or_o be_v sad_a think_v you_o when_o he_o be_v go_v from_o the_o thief_n will_v he_o be_v sad_a and_o hang_v down_o the_o head_n because_o he_o have_v lose_v it_o may_v be_v two_o or_o three_o shilling_n or_o rather_o be_v thankful_a and_o glad_a that_o he_o have_v save_v his_o jewel_n and_o so_o it_o be_v in_o this_o case_n that_o man_n have_v no_o reason_n to_o be_v sad_a though_o he_o lose_v any_o worldly_a thing_n if_o he_o lose_v not_o part_v of_o his_o happiness_n it_o be_v not_o my_o jewel_n that_o i_o have_v lose_v it_o be_v only_o something_o that_o do_v fit_a loose_a about_o i_o a_o little_a worldly_a thing_n it_o may_v be_v which_o be_v not_o connaturall_a with_o i_o but_o more_o easy_a to_o be_v separate_v from_o i_o and_o so_o without_o a_o diminution_n of_o happiness_n this_o may_v help_v to_o compose_v and_o to_o bring_v the_o heart_n in_o a_o right_a frame_n when_o i_o consider_v i_o have_v lose_v something_o but_o it_o be_v but_o a_o poor_a thing_n that_o be_v not_o any_o part_n of_o my_o happiness_n 2._o this_o may_v teach_v we_o to_o moderate_v our_o envy_n envy_n envy_n we_o be_v ready_a to_o repine_v at_o those_o that_o have_v more_o than_o we_o and_o when_o we_o find_v any_o want_n in_o our_o own_o estate_n we_o can_v cavil_n with_o god_n for_o other_o because_o they_o be_v high_o or_o better_a than_o we_o therefore_o god_n deal_v unkind_o with_o we_o and_o we_o begin_v to_o repine_v at_o this_o and_o many_o time_n the_o heart_n be_v ready_a to_o miscarry_v in_o such_o a_o estate_n with_o such_o childish_a thought_n but_o now_o this_o point_n will_v rectify_v a_o man_n and_o tell_v he_o he_o have_v no_o reason_n to_o envy_v he_o for_o have_v that_o which_o be_v so_o poor_a that_o it_o make_v not_o a_o happy_a man_n alas_o poor_a miserable_a man_n that_o have_v never_o so_o much_o i_o think_v with_o sad_a thought_n of_o he_o when_o i_o consider_v this_o man_n be_v count_v a_o happy_a man_n by_o the_o world_n but_o yet_o he_o be_v far_o from_o it_o
