carnal_a man_n account_v the_o way_n of_o god_n foolishness_n and_o preach_v of_o the_o word_n foolishness_n and_o the_o usual_a title_n that_o they_o give_v to_o those_o that_o walk_v more_o strict_a and_o most_o dreadful_a affliction_n in_o this_o world_n than_o willing_o to_o commit_v the_o least_o sin_n as_o now_o if_o you_o will_v but_o turn_v your_o thought_n to_o what_o you_o have_v read_v or_o hear_v of_o the_o martyr_n what_o hideous_a and_o grievous_a torment_n do_v they_o suffer_v the_o boil_a of_o their_o body_n in_o scald_a lead_n lay_v of_o their_o naked_a back_n upon_o hot_a gridiron_n and_o â—ending_v and_o tear_v their_o member_n a_o piece_n with_o horse_n the_o pull_n of_o their_o flesh_n off_o from_o their_o body_n with_o pincher_n and_o other_o by_o red_a hot_a burn_a tongue_n their_o endure_v their_o flesh_n to_o be_v scorch_v with_o broil_v of_o it_o first_o on_o the_o one_o side_n and_o afterward_o on_o the_o other_o side_n yea_o weak_a woman_n have_v endure_v this_o to_o have_v their_o flesh_n harrow_v with_o stone_n and_o sharp_a iron_n to_o have_v their_o body_n flay_v and_o then_o throw_v into_o river_n of_o cold_a ice_n and_o a_o thousand_o more_o whatsoever_o hell_n and_o wicked_a man_n can_v devise_v they_o be_v content_a to_o endure_v all_o this_o and_o certain_o can_v they_o have_v devise_v ten_o thousand_o time_n more_o exquisite_a torment_n than_o they_o do_v they_o will_v have_v be_v content_a to_o have_v endure_v that_o and_o whatsoever_o else_o rather_o than_o to_o act_v against_o their_o conscience_n the_o least_o sin_n and_o they_o account_v this_o to_o be_v a_o good_a choice_n when_o as_o they_o see_v sin_n against_o their_o conscience_n on_o the_o one_o hand_n and_o all_o their_o torment_n on_o the_o other_o they_o do_v rather_o embrace_v these_o torture_n then_o embrace_v that_o sin_n and_o for_o this_o their_o choice_n they_o be_v renown_v in_o the_o heart_n of_o the_o saint_n to_o all_o generation_n yea_o the_o holy_a ghost_n do_v witness_v that_o they_o have_v a_o good_a report_n heb._n 11._o those_o that_o suffer_v saw_v asunder_o and_o scourge_v and_o go_v up_o and_o down_o in_o sheepskin_n and_o goat_n skin_n in_o leather_n breeches_n and_o doublet_n and_o suffer_v the_o spoil_n of_o their_o good_n and_o of_o all_o that_o they_o have_v these_o have_v a_o good_a report_n and_o the_o holy_a ghost_n commend_v they_o for_o
under_o sin_n they_o can_v go_v to_o god_n and_o tell_v god_n their_o affliction_n and_o challenge_v god_n with_o a_o holy_a boldness_n in_o affliction_n but_o who_o can_v go_v to_o god_n and_o challenge_n god_n because_o he_o have_v tell_v a_o lie_n or_o the_o like_a do_v this_o make_v they_o go_v with_o a_o holy_a boldness_n to_o god_n and_o challenge_v god_n promise_v because_o i_o have_v commit_v such_o and_o such_o a_o sin_n second_o when_o affliction_n do_v come_v a_o gracious_a heart_n can_v kiss_v the_o rod_n and_o accept_v of_o the_o punishment_n of_o his_o sin_n but_o now_o a_o gracious_a heart_n can_v never_o be_v well_o please_v with_o his_o sin_n can_v never_o accept_v of_o sin_n though_o god_n punish_v one_o sin_n with_o another_o sometime_o yet_o i_o say_v there_o can_v be_v a_o well_o pleasedness_n with_o sin_n and_o a_o kiss_n of_o that_o three_o a_o gracious_a heart_n may_v rejoice_v in_o affliction_n and_o have_v abundance_n of_o comfort_n in_o affliction_n account_v it_o all_o joy_n say_v the_o holy_a ghost_n when_o you_o fall_v into_o trial_n and_o affliction_n but_o now_o he_o can_v never_o rejoice_v in_o sin_n no_o man_n can_v rejoice_v in_o sin_n though_o god_n shall_v turn_v sin_n to_o never_o so_o much_o good_a one_o can_v rejoice_v in_o sin_n and_o have_v that_o comfort_n he_o may_v in_o affliction_n four_o a_o gracious_a heart_n may_v bless_v god_n for_o affliction_n bless_v god_n that_o ever_o he_o do_v cast_v he_o into_o a_o afflict_a estate_n but_o he_o can_v never_o bless_v god_n for_o put_v he_o into_o a_o sinful_a estate_n though_o god_n do_v work_v good_a out_o of_o it_o nay_o further_o that_o good_a a_o gracious_a heart_n have_v sometime_o by_o affliction_n may_v encourage_v he_o to_o be_v more_o willing_a to_o go_v into_o affliction_n again_o when_o god_n call_v he_o to_o it_o but_o if_o a_o gracious_a heart_n shall_v get_v good_a occasional_o by_o sin_n yet_o this_o good_a can_v encourage_v he_o to_o fall_v into_o sin_n again_o this_o be_v a_o desperate_a wickedness_n if_o he_o shall_v five_o a_o gracious_a heart_n may_v desire_v of_o god_n that_o he_o will_v not_o take_v away_o affliction_n till_o it_o be_v sanctify_v and_o that_o he_o will_v continue_v it_o till_o it_o be_v sanctify_v but_o no_o man_n may_v or_o aught_o to_o pray_v thus_o lord_n continue_v i_o in_o this_o sin_n till_o i_o be_o humble_v therefore_o you_o see_v there_o be_v abundance_n of_o difference_n between_o affliction_n and_o sin_n one_o have_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o good_a annex_v to_o it_o and_o the_o other_o have_v none_o at_o all_o 5._o sin_n it_o be_v so_o evil_a that_o it_o be_v not_o capable_a of_o any_o good_a at_o all_o the_o air_n though_o it_o be_v dark_a yet_o it_o be_v capable_a of_o light_n that_o be_v a_o dismal_a darkness_n that_o be_v not_o capable_a of_o light_a to_o come_v to_o it_o and_o that_o which_o be_v bitter_a though_o never_o so_o bitter_a yet_o it_o be_v capable_a of_o receive_v that_o which_o will_v sweeten_v it_o that_o which_o be_v never_o so_o venomous_a yet_o be_v capable_a of_o such_o thing_n as_o will_v make_v it_o wholesome_a but_o sin_n be_v so_o dark_a that_o it_o be_v uncapable_a of_o light_n so_o bitter_a as_o there_o be_v no_o way_n to_o make_v it_o sweet_a so_o venomous_a as_o it_o be_v no_o way_n capable_a of_o any_o wholsomness_n now_o for_o the_o clear_n of_o this_o consider_v these_o three_o thing_n 1._o put_v all_o the_o good_a in_o heaven_n and_o earth_n and_o in_o all_o the_o creature_n in_o heaven_n and_o earth_n together_o suppose_v the_o quintiscence_n of_o all_o the_o good_a of_o all_o the_o creature_n of_o heaven_n and_o earth_n be_v put_v together_o and_o bring_v that_o to_o sin_n and_o add_v it_o to_o it_o it_o will_v not_o make_v it_o good_a no_o sin_n will_v remain_v still_o as_o evil_a as_o before_o it_o be_v now_o that_o must_v needs_o be_v poison_n indeed_o that_o bring_v all_o the_o sovereign_a thing_n in_o the_o world_n and_o put_v to_o it_o yet_o there_o will_v not_o be_v a_o deminishion_n of_o the_o least_o strength_n of_o that_o poison_n and_o so_o it_o be_v with_o sin_n therefore_o i_o beseech_v you_o brethren_n observe_v it_o those_o man_n and_o woman_n be_v mighty_o mistake_v that_o think_v i_o have_v be_v a_o sinful_a creature_n indeed_o but_o now_o i_o will_v amend_v and_o reform_v and_o be_v better_o that_o by_o add_v some_o good_a to_o their_o former_a sinful_a life_n it_o will_v make_v all_o good_a oh_o know_v that_o there_o be_v so_o much_o evil_n in_o sin_n that_o the_o addition_n of_o all_o the_o good_a of_o all_o the_o creature_n in_o heaven_n and_o earth_n can_v make_v it_o less_o evil_a than_o before_o so_o that_o you_o must_v not_o only_o now_o think_v to_o live_v better_a &_o add_v good_a unto_o your_o former_a evil_n but_o you_o must_v take_v a_o course_n for_o the_o take_v away_o of_o the_o former_a evil_n for_o the_o deliver_v you_o from_o the_o guilt_n and_o stain_n and_o filth_n of_o your_o former_a sin_n 2._o sin_n be_v not_o capable_a of_o good_a all_o those_o good_a end_n that_o any_o man_n have_v in_o the_o commission_n of_o sin_n yet_o do_v not_o make_v their_o sin_n the_o better_a that_o can_v make_v sin_n good_a because_o they_o have_v good_a end_n as_o thus_o there_o may_v be_v three_o good_a end_n some_o may_v think_v they_o have_v in_o the_o commission_n of_o sin_n 1_o they_o may_v perhaps_o think_v that_o by_o commission_n of_o some_o sin_n they_o may_v further_o some_o grace_n do_v good_a to_o other_o or_o glorify_v god_n there_o may_v be_v such_o deceit_n in_o the_o heart_n as_o thus_o 1_o they_o may_v think_v such_o a_o sin_n will_v help_v such_o a_o grace_n and_o help_v against_o such_o a_o temptation_n and_o such_o a_o sin_n may_v help_v my_o humility_n and_o it_o be_v ordinary_a this_o temptation_n when_o in_o trouble_n of_o conscience_n make_v away_o thyself_o and_o then_o thou_o will_v sin_v no_o more_o for_o so_o long_o as_o i_o live_v i_o shall_v sin_v against_o god_n &_o therefore_o make_v away_o thyself_o and_o so_o cease_v to_o sin_n but_o know_v if_o thou_o lay_v violent_a hand_n upon_o thyself_o and_o think_v thou_o shall_v have_v this_o good_a by_o it_o to_o sin_n no_o more_o yet_o thy_o sin_n be_v wicked_a and_o abominable_a though_o thou_o put_v this_o good_a end_n upon_o it_o though_o it_o be_v possible_a to_o in_o crease_n grace_n never_o so_o much_o by_o the_o least_o sinful_a thought_n we_o must_v not_o commit_v this_o least_o sinful_a thought_n for_o never_o so_o good_a a_o end_n as_o to_o help_v forward_o such_o a_o grace_n 2_o a_o second_o end_n may_v be_v to_o do_v good_a to_o other_o and_o i_o say_v if_o it_o be_v possible_a if_o a_o man_n may_v be_v a_o mean_n to_o save_v the_o whole_a world_n if_o he_o will_v commit_v one_o sin_n if_o he_o can_v save_v the_o whole_a world_n from_o eternal_a torment_n by_o the_o commission_n of_o one_o sin_n you_o shall_v suffer_v the_o whole_a world_n to_o perish_v rather_o than_o commit_v one_o sin_n there_o be_v so_o much_o evil_n in_o sin_n it_o be_v the_o expression_n of_o augustine_n in_o a_o tractate_n of_o his_o concern_v a_o officious_a lie_n a_o friend_n of_o his_o write_v to_o he_o to_o answer_v this_o question_n about_o tell_v of_o a_o lie_n whether_o he_o may_v not_o tell_v a_o lie_n to_o do_v good_a to_o another_o man_n many_o think_v what_o though_o i_o do_v tell_v a_o lie_n so_o i_o do_v another_o good_a indeed_o if_o i_o may_v do_v hurt_v than_o i_o must_v not_o but_o if_o i_o may_v do_v good_a may_v i_o not_o tell_v a_o lie_n well_o this_o question_n be_v bring_v to_o augustine_n and_o say_v he_o thou_o must_v not_o tell_v a_o lie_n to_o save_v the_o whole_a world_n this_o be_v his_o answer_n suppose_v that_o the_o soul_n of_o thy_o father_n mother_n or_o child_n this_o be_v but_o a_o supposition_n or_o the_o like_a shall_v lie_v upon_o it_o to_o be_v save_v or_o damn_v if_o not_o eye_n to_o see_v these_o before_o and_o yet_o who_o lay_v these_o thing_n to_o heart_n and_o thus_o we_o have_v do_v with_o this_o first_o thing_n in_o the_o explanation_n the_o wrong_a sin_n do_v to_o god_n in_o his_o nature_n work_v against_o and_o strike_v at_o god_n and_o in_o his_o relation_n etc._n etc._n now_o there_o be_v i_o confess_v those_o thing_n i_o most_o aim_v at_o in_o this_o work_n behind_o therefore_o i_o will_v wind_v up_o in_o a_o word_n or_o two_o in_o some_o corollary_n and_o consequence_n to_o be_v draw_v from_o hence_o only_o thus_o much_o when_o i_o have_v tell_v you_o sin_n be_v a_o great_a evil_n than_o affliction_n yea_o a_o great_a evil_n than_o all_o the_o torment_n of_o hell_n as_o i_o say_v in_o the_o beginning_n then_o you_o may_v see_v by_o what_o i_o have_v say_v how_o this_o truth_n result_v out_o of_o these_o consequence_n because_o it_o wrong_v god_n and_o god_n be_v so_o infinite_o good_a if_o any_o man_n be_v afflict_v or_o perish_v in_o hell_n eternal_o it_o be_v but_o the_o good_a of_o a_o creature_n and_o the_o comfort_n of_o a_o creature_n cross_v in_o this_o but_o in_o sin_n there_o be_v the_o cross_v of_o the_o good_a of_o a_o infinite_a god_n and_o of_o his_o glory_n and_o there_o be_v more_o good_a in_o god_n glory_n than_o in_o all_o the_o peace_n and_o comfort_n of_o all_o creature_n in_o the_o world_n and_o if_o so_o then_o certain_o there_o must_v be_v more_o evil_a in_o sin_n that_o be_v cross_v to_o god_n glory_n than_o in_o all_o pain_n and_o torment_n that_o be_v but_o only_o cross_v to_o the_o peace_n and_o comfort_n that_o be_v in_o the_o creature_n i_o say_v hence_o follow_v these_o corollary_n chap._n xv._n the_o first_o corollary_n it_o appear_v by_o this_o that_o but_o few_o melancholy_a to_o make_v man_n and_o woman_n serious_a to_o consider_v what_o shall_v become_v of_o they_o another_o day_n what_o the_o term_n between_o god_n and_o they_o be_v what_o if_o i_o be_v mind_n be_v dark_a where_o melancholy_a prevail_v and_o many_o time_n gross_a ignorance_n but_o never_o any_o true_a trouble_n of_o conscience_n but_o god_n come_v in_o with_o some_o light_n and_o therefore_o if_o any_o man_n or_o woman_n be_v trouble_v and_o say_v it_o be_v for_o sin_n i_o put_v this_o to_o you_o what_o have_v god_n discover_v to_o you_o now_o more_o than_o before_o what_o degree_n to_o another_o but_o trouble_n of_o conscience_n come_v many_o time_n as_o a_o flash_n of_o lightning_n from_o heaven_n many_o man_n and_o woman_n have_v come_v to_o the_o congregation_n with_o scornful_a spirit_n profane_a wicked_a and_o ungodly_a never_o know_v what_o sin_n mean_v nor_o trouble_v for_o sin_n mean_v and_o god_n have_v meet_v with_o they_o in_o the_o word_n and_o fasten_v some_o sentence_n upon_o their_o heart_n so_o that_o they_o fall_v down_o under_o the_o power_n of_o it_o that_o come_v just_a as_o a_o arrow_n strike_v into_o their_o liver_n and_o they_o can_v never_o get_v out_o of_o it_o &_o have_v go_v away_o with_o horror_n of_o soul_n and_o therefore_o this_o have_v not_o be_v melancholliness_n certain_o the_o humour_n of_o the_o body_n never_o so_o sudden_o alter_v the_o spirit_n of_o man_n but_o when_o god_n come_v to_o work_v when_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n and_o bondage_n come_v to_o work_v it_o need_v no_o matter_n before_o no_o preparative_n matter_n for_o the_o work_n of_o the_o word_n be_v such_o as_o it_o work_v immediate_o without_o any_o preparation_n therefore_o many_o man_n that_o understand_v as_o little_a of_o trouble_n of_o conscience_n as_o ever_o any_o do_v in_o their_o life_n and_o yet_o god_n let_v some_o truth_n reach_v they_o

if_o nothing_o have_v cure_v it_o but_o these_o thing_n it_o be_v like_o the_o thorn_n in_o the_o flesh_n and_o will_v trouble_v you_o afterward_o there_o be_v another_o manner_n of_o cure_n for_o
