light_n of_o nature_n direct_v all_o man_n general_o to_o the_o use_n of_o law_n as_o the_o main_a band_n of_o humane_a society_n and_o the_o best_a remedy_n against_o confusion_n and_o ruin_n that_o

society_n now_o we_o see_v the_o small_a society_n that_o be_v among_o man_n and_o the_o most_o near_o compact_v together_o the_o inhabitant_n of_o one_o small_a city_n the_o fellow_n of_o one_o college_n govern_v by_o law_n and_o order_n whereas_o the_o church_n be_v the_o large_a of_o all_o society_n in_o the_o world_n in_o extent_n and_o most_o disperse_v as_o be_v possible_a to_o be_v scatter_v over_o the_o whole_a face_n of_o the_o earth_n and_o consequent_o above_o all_o other_o state_n on_o earth_n need_v to_o be_v establish_v by_o the_o best_a law_n as_o be_v hard_a to_o be_v govern_v and_o most_o subject_a to_o disorder_v and_o confusion_n without_o they_o in_o the_o next_o place_n we_o see_v the_o law_n of_o man_n reach_v no_o far_o than_o the_o order_n of_o man_n outward_a conversation_n heart_n 2_o to_o be_v order_v in_o the_o very_a motion_n of_o the_o heart_n and_o meddle_v not_o with_o the_o inward_a thought_n and_o motion_n of_o the_o mind_n but_o in_o the_o government_n of_o the_o church_n the_o chief_a work_n must_v be_v the_o rule_n of_o the_o heart_n and_o conscience_n as_o the_o apostle_n tell_v we_o that_o god_n word_n and_o law_n reach_v to_o heb._n 4.12_o now_o how_o much_o great_a variety_n and_o diversity_n there_o be_v in_o man_n thought_n then_o in_o their_o action_n how_o much_o more_o easy_o and_o speedy_o they_o be_v move_v and_o consequent_o with_o how_o much_o great_a difficulty_n they_o be_v govern_v and_o keep_v in_o order_n be_v evident_a to_o all_o man_n consequent_o we_o must_v conceive_v that_o the_o just_a wise_a counterfeit_a now_o the_o church_n acknowledge_v no_o other_o book_n for_o the_o word_n or_o law_n of_o god_n but_o this_o alone_a neither_o do_v ever_o any_o dare_v to_o pretend_v that_o any_o other_o book_n beside_o this_o be_v god_n word_n or_o law_n if_o any_o shall_v the_o very_a compare_v of_o such_o bastard-writing_n with_o the_o true_a word_n will_v easy_o discover_v they_o to_o be_v no_o better_o then_o counterfeit_a but_o to_o clear_v this_o point_n more_o full_o we_o shall_v desire_v to_o manifest_v this_o one_o truth_n more_o which_o any_o sober_a mind_a man_n will_v easy_o assent_v unto_o namely_o that_o it_o be_v neither_o possible_a nor_o in_o any_o sort_n convenient_a that_o the_o law_n for_o the_o govern_n of_o the_o church_n shall_v be_v give_v by_o any_o other_o scripture_n which_o have_v god_n for_o their_o author_n must_v needs_o be_v of_o divine_a authority_n the_o former_a position_n be_v once_o grant_v that_o the_o scripture_n be_v god_n word_n no_o man_n can_v question_v their_o authority_n whether_o that_o be_v of_o he_o or_o no._n so_o that_o this_o evident_a truth_n need_v no_o power_n at_o all_o our_o labour_n must_v be_v only_o to_o show_v what_o we_o mean_v by_o that_o divine_a authority_n which_o we_o challenge_v unto_o the_o scripture_n for_o the_o open_n whereof_o we_o must_v first_o consider_v in_o general_a what_o this_o name_n
