here_o that_o be_v strange_a that_o the_o more_o truth_n be_v reveal_v to_o man_n the_o more_o knowledge_n they_o have_v the_o more_o moral_a virtue_n they_o practise_v the_o worse_a it_o shall_v be_v with_o they_o answ._n for_o answer_v to_o this_o you_o must_v know_v that_o the_o have_v of_o this_o truth_n the_o bestow_n of_o any_o of_o these_o common_a grace_n put_v no_o man_n into_o a_o better_a condition_n it_o be_v god_n work_n and_o put_v upon_o his_o reckon_n only_o indeed_o the_o use_v or_o abuse_v of_o they_o be_v his_o own_o work_n and_o put_v upon_o his_o own_o reckon_n and_o therefore_o in_o regard_n he_o may_v abuse_v they_o they_o may_v do_v he_o hurt_v and_o those_o that_o have_v much_o of_o these_o truth_n but_o use_v they_o not_o or_o that_o if_o they_o do_v use_v some_o of_o they_o yet_o do_v it_o for_o their_o own_o end_n and_o not_o simple_o for_o god_n glory_n be_v as_o abominable_a to_o god_n as_o those_o that_o run_v into_o the_o great_a outrage_n man_n first_o what_o this_o truth_n be_v second_o how_o it_o be_v withheld_a three_o the_o greatness_n of_o the_o sin_n of_o withhold_a the_o truth_n etc._n etc._n for_o the_o first_o what_o this_o truth_n be_v truth_n you_o must_v know_v there_o be_v a_o threefold_a kind_n of_o truth_n first_o a_o natural_a truth_n write_v in_o the_o heart_n of_o man_n to_o who_o the_o scripture_n be_v never_o reveal_v second_o a_o common_a truth_n or_o common_a knowledge_n such_o as_o they_o have_v that_o live_v in_o the_o church_n but_o be_v not_o sanctify_v three_o a_o spiritual_a knowledge_n which_o sanctify_v the_o heart_n of_o they_o in_o who_o it_o be_v the_o two_o first_o whereof_o natural_a knowledge_n and_o common_a knowledge_n natural_a man_n may_v have_v now_o the_o thing_n we_o have_v to_o do_v be_v to_o show_v you_o what_o this_o knowledge_n here_o mean_v be_v because_o the_o difference_n be_v not_o very_o apparent_a now_o as_o to_o understand_v what_o a_o accident_n be_v you_o consider_v the_o subject_n the_o author_n and_o efficient_a and_o the_o extent_n thereof_o so_o consider_v you_o these_o three_o thing_n and_o then_o you_o shall_v know_v what_o this_o truth_n be_v truth_n first_o where_o this_o truth_n be_v now_o there_o be_v a_o truth_n place_v in_o the_o speculative_a part_n of_o the_o mind_n or_o understanding_n which_o be_v that_o by_o which_o we_o know_v and_o judge_v aright_o concern_v god_n and_o moral_a virtue_n what_o be_v good_a and_o what_o be_v bad_a what_o be_v just_a and_o what_o be_v unjust_a whereby_o many_o man_n can_v discourse_v learned_o and_o clear_o as_o seneca_n and_o tully_n and_o other_o of_o the_o heathen_a in_o who_o we_o find_v many_o glimmering_n and_o sparkle_n of_o true_a light_n as_o we_o may_v find_v flower_n in_o the_o waste_n though_o the_o proper_a place_n be_v the_o garden_n the_o church_n be_v the_o garden_n of_o god_n as_o in_o canticle_n my_o sister_n my_o spouse_n be_v as_o a_o garden_n enclose_v and_o it_o be_v true_a these_o flower_n proper_o grow_v there_o and_o if_o you_o will_v have_v they_o you_o must_v seek_v they_o in_o the_o scripture_n in_o the_o church_n of_o god_n but_o we_o may_v likewise_o other_o in_o this_o that_o that_o judge_v simple_o whether_o it_o be_v good_a or_o bad_a but_o this_o give_v law_n and_o rule_n and_o edict_n of_o life_n it_o
therefore_o since_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n shall_v in_o such_o a_o manner_n be_v reveal_v against_o such_o as_o withhold_v the_o truth_n in_o unrighteousness_n you_o need_v no_o other_o argument_n to_o show_v that_o the_o sin_n be_v great_a again_o one_o evidence_n more_o be_v in_o this_o very_a chapter_n that_o be_v from_o the_o kind_n of_o punishment_n for_o punishment_n you_o know_v where_o the_o judge_n be_v just_a be_v according_a to_o the_o measure_n of_o the_o sin_n now_o mark_v god_n punish_v this_o with_o give_v they_o up_o to_o a_o reprobate_a sense_n for_o this_o cause_n say_v so_o it_o be_v the_o least_o feel_v man_n lie_v at_o rest_n they_o be_v cast_v into_o a_o dead_a sleep_n but_o it_o be_v like_o the_o sleep_n of_o they_o that_o have_v crazy_a brain_n they_o wake_v in_o a_o frenzy_n so_o these_o shall_v wake_v in_o a_o horrible_a astonishment_n their_o sleep_n be_v such_o a_o calm_a as_o will_v end_v in_o a_o tempest_n and_o such_o a_o tempest_n as_o shall_v never_o be_v blow_v over_o therefore_o let_v no_o man_n bless_v himself_o in_o this_o i_o feel_v none_o of_o these_o thing_n for_o thou_o have_v the_o great_a judgement_n on_o thou_o when_o thou_o to_o be_v rid_v of_o it_o because_o it_o watch_v over_o we_o and_o so_o we_o grow_v enemy_n to_o it_o and_o this_o be_v no_o small_a sin_n for_o if_o we_o consider_v whence_o this_o come_v who_o put_v it_o into_o our_o heart_n it_o will_v appear_v heinous_a by_o the_o law_n of_o man_n it_o be_v death_n to_o kill_v child_n that_o be_v beget_v by_o man_n but_o this_o truth_n be_v beget_v by_o the_o holy_a ghost_n it_o be_v put_v in_o by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n and_o to_o extinguish_v this_o truth_n not_o to_o suffer_v it_o to_o live_v not_o to_o nourish_v it_o not_o to_o bring_v it_o forth_o be_v the_o great_a sin_n of_o all_o even_o the_o heathen_a shall_v rise_v in_o judgement_n against_o christian_n for_o this_o who_o maintain_v the_o vestal_a fire_n because_o they_o conceive_v it_o to_o come_v from_o heaven_n they_o for_o that_o cause_n never_o suffer_v it_o to_o go_v out_o but_o this_o truth_n be_v a_o fire_n which_o come_v from_o heaven_n a_o spark_n put_v into_o the_o thing_n in_o ourselves_o we_o look_v to_o our_o eye_n the_o guide_n of_o the_o body_n so_o we_o shall_v learn_v to_o watch_v and_o be_v tender_a over_o this_o truth_n as_o over_o our_o eye_n for_o the_o one_o be_v the_o light_n but_o of_o this_o life_n the_o other_o be_v the_o light_n of_o the_o soul_n to_o eternal_a life_n in_o micah_n 3.5_o it_o be_v threaten_v as_o a_o great_a judgement_n when_o god_n shall_v turn_v their_o vision_n into_o night_n and_o their_o divination_n into_o darkness_n when_o the_o sun_n shall_v go_v down_o on_o their_o prophet_n and_o the_o day_n shall_v be_v dark_a on_o they_o and_o will_v you_o bring_v this_o judgement_n on_o yourselves_o they_o that_o be_v guilty_a of_o this_o that_o have_v not_o use_v this_o truth_n but_o imprison_v it_o and_o labour_v as_o much_o as_o they_o can_v to_o cause_v the_o sun_n to_o go_v down_o and_o rise_v no_o more_o to_o turn_v the_o day_n into_o night_n let_v they_o consider_v what_o the_o sin_n be_v when_o you_o read_v the_o story_n of_o the_o king_n and_o hear_v they_o say_v to_o the_o prophet_n prophesy_v not_o imprison_v they_o as_o ahab_n do_v micaiah_n and_o slay_v they_o as_o joash_n do_v zecharial_a you_o will_v little_o think_v you_o be_v guilty_a of_o the_o same_o sin_n but_o when_o this_o truth_n come_v as_o a_o prophet_n from_o god_n and_o tell_v you_o such_o and_o such_o thing_n ought_v to_o be_v do_v and_o such_o and_o such_o evil_n ought_v to_o be_v abstain_v from_o and_o you_o shall_v desire_v it_o to_o be_v silent_a and_o shall_v say_v prophesy_v not_o when_o you_o shall_v not_o christ_n so_o that_o they_o that_o resist_v christ_n righteousness_n which_o be_v god_n chief_a end_n must_v needs_o do_v themselves_o most_o hurt_v again_o they_o in_o who_o god_n justice_n do_v most_o appear_v their_o condition_n must_v needs_o be_v most_o miserable_a but_o so_o it_o be_v with_o these_o man_n they_o that_o be_v acquaint_v with_o his_o will_n and_o do_v it_o not_o in_o they_o at_o the_o day_n of_o judgement_n his_o justice_n shall_v most_o appear_v otherwise_o to_o what_o end_n do_v god_n send_v the_o prophet_n why_o send_v he_o isaiah_n and_o ezekiel_n etc._n etc._n it_o of_o all_o other_o far_a both_o from_o justification_n and_o sanctification_n this_o truth_n put_v they_o far_o off_o both_o i_o say_v the_o more_o knowledge_n be_v reveal_v the_o more_o they_o be_v or_o restrain_v it_o thou_o shall_v find_v it_o will_v be_v revenge_v on_o thou_o for_o it_o be_v attend_v with_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n five_o 5._o if_o this_o be_v the_o miserable_a condition_n of_o all_o unregenerate_a man_n rule_v thus_o to_o withhold_v the_o truth_n in_o unrighteousness_n as_o there_o have_v be_v word_n of_o humiliation_n and_o reproof_n so_o let_v i_o shut_v up_o with_o out_o of_o some_o by-respect_n a_o man_n will_v have_v it_o carry_v otherwise_o this_o be_v commit_v of_o a_o know_a sin_n so_o in_o case_n of_o envy_n this_o man_n preferment_n may_v be_v profitable_a but_o because_o his_o eminency_n may_v be_v hurtful_a to_o i_o i_o can_v affect_v he_o this_o be_v a_o know_a sin_n so_o in_o case_n of_o the_o sacrament_n do_v you_o not_o know_v you_o desire_v god_n to_o try_v he_o another_o be_v not_o willing_a to_o search_v because_o he_o be_v willing_a to_o lie_v in_o some_o sin_n or_o because_o he_o will_v not_o have_v his_o conscience_n trouble_v with_o it_o this_o be_v a_o sign_n of_o a_o false_a heart_n though_o they_o do_v not_o know_v that_o this_o be_v a_o sin_n yet_o it_o have_v the_o shadow_n of_o a_o sin_n and_o they_o be_v unwilling_a to_o examine_v it_o to_o the_o full_a it_o show_v it_o be_v no_o less_o 2._o second_o the_o second_o case_n wherein_o a_o man_n withhold_v this_o knowledge_n knowledge_n and_o detain_v and_o be_v not_o willing_a to_o add_v to_o this_o knowledge_n to_o increase_v it_o that_o man_n proper_o withhold_v the_o truth_n in_o unrighteousness_n for_o he_o that_o withhold_v fuel_n put_v out_o the_o fire_n as_o well_o as_o he_o that_o cast_v water_n on_o it_o and_o he_o that_o take_v away_o food_n from_o a_o live_a creature_n kill_v it_o as_o well_o as_o he_o that_o take_v away_o its_o life_n with_o violence_n so_o if_o thou_o do_v not_o feed_v this_o with_o fuel_n with_o that_o which_o may_v make_v it_o grow_v and_o increase_v if_o thou_o do_v not_o labour_v to_o enlarge_v it_o thou_o do_v extinguish_v it_o those_o and_o of_o these_o man_n there_o be_v two_o sort_n first_o such_o as_o do_v not_o care_n for_o any_o knowledge_n at_o all_o or_o if_o they_o do_v come_v to_o hear_v yet_o they_o recall_v it_o not_o meditate_v not_o upon_o it_o and_o so_o as_o good_a never_o a_o whit_n as_o never_o the_o better_a some_o thing_n they_o must_v do_v for_o fashion_n sake_n but_o if_o they_o do_v hear_v they_o do_v it_o in_o a_o negligent_a manner_n they_o be_v ever_o learning_n and_o never_o come_v to_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o truth_n these_o be_v the_o first_o sort_n of_o man_n but_o there_o be_v a_o second_o sort_n and_o that_o be_v those_o which_o have_v know_v much_o have_v hear_v much_o have_v go_v very_o far_o in_o the_o knowledge_n of_o this_o truth_n yet_o will_v not_o go_v to_o the_o uttermost_a i_o may_v resemble_v they_o by_o felix_n he_o go_v not_o far_o but_o i_o use_v it_o as_o a_o resemblance_n when_o paul_n preach_v and_o begin_v to_o know_v some_o measure_n of_o this_o truth_n when_o some_o of_o these_o spark_n begin_v to_o be_v revive_v and_o stir_v up_o in_o he_o he_o bid_v he_o go_v away_o and_o say_v he_o will_v call_v for_o he_o another_o time_n but_o he_o be_v not_o so_o good_a as_o his_o word_n so_o when_o a_o man_n be_v loath_a to_o be_v bring_v to_o that_o strictness_n and_o exactness_n that_o be_v require_v as_o but_o the_o three_o and_o that_o be_v when_o a_o man_n be_v pass_v this_o degree_n 3._o and_o be_v come_v to_o be_v willing_a to_o know_v all_o truth_n mean_n do_v not_o desire_v to_o have_v any_o know_v of_o before_o it_o may_v be_v it_o be_v covetousness_n or_o it_o may_v be_v envy_n one_o thing_n or_o other_o be_v discover_v and_o when_o it_o be_v discover_v there_o be_v a_o winnow_v of_o themselves_o they_o see_v there_o be_v dross_n and_o when_o they_o see_v it_o they_o labour_v to_o purge_v it_o by_o repentance_n it_o be_v quite_o contrary_a with_o the_o other_o the_o more_o they_o so_o this_o be_v the_o four_o way_n by_o frequent_a quench_v of_o good_a motion_n by_o ill_a company_n and_o fall_v into_o sin_n they_o do_v harden_v their_o heart_n and_o so_o suffocate_v and_o quench_v this_o truth_n 5._o the_o five_o way_n be_v when_o we_o do_v not_o remove_v the_o impediment_n impediment_n which_o if_o they_o be_v take_v away_o the_o truth_n will_v rise_v and_o show_v itself_o for_o that_o be_v it_o that_o keep_v down_o the_o truth_n god_n have_v write_v it_o plain_a enough_o on_o man_n heart_n but_o when_o we_o let_v dust_n and_o soil_n lie_v on_o it_o we_o can_v read_v it_o this_o idleness_n and_o laziness_n suffer_v these_o impediment_n to_o lie_v on_o you_o to_o cover_v the_o truth_n in_o you_o be_v to_o withhold_v the_o truth_n therefore_o seneca_n have_v a_o notion_n in_o this_o case_n though_o he_o be_v a_o heathen_a the_o soul_n of_o man_n be_v it_o free_a from_o passion_n and_o distraction_n and_o be_v quiet_a truth_n shall_v be_v see_v clear_o man_n be_v not_o immediate_o deceive_v but_o transport_v by_o a_o lust_n and_o that_o be_v adam_n case_n and_o that_o lust_n arise_v from_o deceit_n suppose_v it_o be_v a_o lust_n of_o envy_n that_o transport_v a_o man_n to_o a_o sin_n although_o that_o do_v not_o immediate_o deceive_v yet_o this_o as_o all_o sin_n arise_v from_o error_n therefore_o when_o any_o temptation_n come_v see_v if_o it_o be_v a_o sin_n if_o it_o be_v a_o sin_n be_v sure_a thou_o be_v deceive_v and_o though_o thou_o can_v not_o find_v out_o the_o deceit_n yet_o remember_v it_o be_v there_o ephes._n 4._o you_o shall_v find_v these_o put_v together_o the_o old_a man_n be_v corrupt_v through_o lust_n proceed_v from_o deceit_n and_o be_v renew_v in_o the_o spirit_n of_o your_o mind_n after_o the_o image_n of_o side_n the_o old_a man_n do_v not_o only_o stand_v in_o lust_n but_o in_o deceit_n from_o whence_o the_o lust_n come_v therefore_o take_v heed_n of_o that_o deceit_n and_o know_v this_o when_o any_o regard_v not_o to_o know_v god_n nor_o practise_v according_a to_o knowledge_n but_o provoke_v he_o with_o their_o sin_n and_o become_v vain_a make_v no_o conscience_n of_o offend_v he_o then_o come_v in_o this_o in_o the_o three_o place_n they_o be_v deliver_v up_o to_o a_o reprobate_a sense_n so_o as_o they_o can_v heal_v themselves_o they_o be_v bring_v to_o a_o irrecoverable_a state_n as_o a_o man_n in_o quick_a sand_n that_o go_v deep_a and_o deep_o and_o know_v not_o how_o to_o get_v out_o they_o be_v give_v up_o to_o vile_a affection_n so_o as_o they_o can_v loose_v themselves_o out_o of_o the_o band_n of_o the_o devil_n but_o mark_v the_o progress_n first_o god_n reveal_v himself_o than_o they_o provoke_v he_o by_o precedent_a sin_n than_o he_o give_v they_o up_o to_o these_o affection_n but_o to_o open_v the_o point_n at_o large_a and_o to_o show_v the_o excuse_n man_n have_v and_o their_o weakness_n and_o how_o they_o be_v take_v away_o and_o then_o it_o will_v be_v evident_a that_o all_o man_n be_v inexcusable_a themselves_o the_o first_o pretence_n man_n have_v be_v that_o they_o know_v not_o god_n they_o be_v not_o acquaint_v with_o he_o 1_o they_o be_v ignorant_a of_o his_o way_n that_o be_v easy_o answer_v god_n that_o they_o that_o know_v he_o least_o yet_o have_v so_o much_o knowledge_n as_o will_v make_v they_o inexcusable_a answ._n they_o that_o have_v only_o be_v acquaint_v with_o the_o creation_n of_o the_o world_n savage_a man_n that_o never_o hear_v the_o word_n that_o be_v never_o acquaint_v with_o the_o scripture_n yet_o these_o know_v god_n for_o god_n have_v manifest_v himself_o to_o they_o this_o i_o prove_v at_o large_a in_o the_o former_a point_n so_o that_o no_o man_n can_v deny_v but_o he_o know_v god_n that_o be_v that_o there_o be_v a_o god_n and_o this_o very_a thing_n if_o no_o more_o be_v enough_o to_o make_v they_o inexcusable_a for_o they_o know_v god_n but_o glorify_v he_o not_o as_o god_n when_o such_o a_o man_n know_v there_o be_v a_o almighty_a power_n by_o his_o natural_a wit_n he_o be_v able_a to_o deduce_v if_o there_o be_v a_o god_n i_o must_v behave_v myself_o well_o towards_o he_o i_o must_v fear_v he_o as_o god_n i_o must_v be_v affect_v to_o he_o as_o god_n i_o must_v worship_v he_o with_o all_o reverence_n as_o god_n but_o the_o most_o ignorant_a man_n confess_v there_o be_v a_o god_n no_o nation_n deny_v it_o but_o how_o far_o be_v they_o from_o glorify_v he_o as_o god_n from_o carry_v themselves_o towards_o he_o as_o it_o become_v
turn_v away_o the_o wrath_n of_o the_o lord_n therefore_o remember_v these_o in_o particular_a and_o consider_v what_o it_o be_v to_o spare_v in_o this_o case_n saul_n be_v lose_v by_o spare_v agag_n and_o remember_v what_o elijah_n gain_v and_o jehu_n gain_v by_o be_v zealous_a the_o manner_n we_o will_v whole_o leave_v to_o you_o only_o be_v zealous_a for_o the_o lord_n faith_n the_o second_o thing_n you_o must_v do_v for_o the_o church_n to_o turn_v away_o the_o lord_n wrath_n be_v to_o contend_v for_o that_o which_o maintain_v the_o church_n i_o mean_v faith_n maintain_v that_o which_o maintain_v you_o preserve_v that_o which_o preseru_v you_o the_o whole_a church_n and_o kingdom_n we_o will_v therefore_o commend_v to_o you_o that_o of_o judge_n i_o exhort_v you_o say_v he_o that_o be_v matter_n of_o exceed_v great_a moment_n all_o that_o we_o have_v say_v before_o of_o the_o punishment_n of_o injustice_n whoredom_n idolatry_n and_o superstition_n etc._n etc._n be_v not_o so_o much_o as_o this_o for_o a_o man_n may_v turn_v aside_o to_o these_o sin_n and_o yet_o have_v a_o right_a judgement_n but_o so_o long_o as_o the_o judgement_n be_v pervert_v the_o soul_n be_v irrecoverable_a again_o these_o be_v of_o exceed_v great_a consequence_n for_o what_o elisha_n do_v with_o the_o syrian_n who_o when_o they_o think_v they_o be_v lead_v to_o the_o man_n who_o they_o seek_v to_o take_v be_v bring_v into_o samaria_n to_o be_v take_v the_o same_o fall_v out_o where_o there_o be_v a_o error_n of_o faith_n that_o which_o man_n think_v build_v they_o up_o unto_o the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n lead_v they_o to_o that_o which_o will_v be_v their_o destruction_n therefore_o contend_v for_o the_o faith_n for_o the_o whole_a doctrine_n of_o faith_n for_o every_o point_n shine_v in_o another_o hemisphere_n and_o not_o in_o our_o own_o some_o shine_n like_o meteor_n for_o a_o little_a time_n and_o then_o disappear_v again_o let_v it_o be_v your_o care_n that_o all_o sâ—rres_n that_o be_v in_o the_o firmament_n of_o the_o church_n i_o mean_v those_o that_o be_v to_o dispense_v the_o mystery_n of_o salvation_n may_v though_o weak_o yet_o like_o true_a star_n
