they_o that_o belong_v unto_o he_o and_o of_o this_o sort_n be_v their_o imagination_n of_o justification_n before_o god_n by_o work_n of_o the_o pope_n absolute_a supremacy_n &_o authority_n over_o all_o of_o the_o sufficiency_n of_o the_o sacrifice_n of_o the_o mass_n of_o invocation_n of_o dead_a saint_n and_o angel_n with_o a_o thousand_o such_o like_a abomination_n and_o sin_n all_o which_o do_v both_o derogate_v and_o deface_v the_o excellency_n and_o sufficiency_n of_o our_o saviour_n christ_n person_n nature_n office_n name_n and_o all_o and_o also_o snare_n &_o entangle_v man_n mind_n for_o who_o safety_n and_o good_a they_o will_v seem_v to_o provide_v in_o this_o &_o such_o other_o conceit_n of_o their_o own_o forgery_n for_o though_o it_o be_v pleasant_a to_o flesh_n and_o blood_n to_o hear_v much_o of_o man_n merit_n man_n freewill_n and_o many_o such_o like_a that_o they_o hold_v all_o tend_v to_o puff_n up_o man_n &_o that_o against_o god_n yet_o indeed_o to_o speak_v the_o truth_n what_o peace_n or_o comfort_n can_v there_o be_v in_o these_o thing_n when_o man_n be_v own_o knowledge_n both_o before_o &_o after_o regeneration_n shall_v within_o himself_o &_o in_o other_o direct_o stand_v up_o against_o the_o same_o to_o take_v one_o or_o two_o of_o they_o that_o so_o by_o they_o we_o may_v judge_v of_o the_o rest_n what_o man_n that_o know_v or_o feel_v not_o only_o his_o backwardness_n to_o good_a thing_n but_o his_o inclination_n &_o ready_a good_a will_n to_o all_o evil_a and_o that_o not_o only_o before_o enlighten_v but_o after_o also_o will_v so_o much_o as_o suppose_v that_o he_o can_v deserve_v any_o thing_n before_o god_n especial_o if_o he_o do_v well_o &_o diligent_o observe_v his_o own_o way_n &_o work_n in_o thought_n in_o desire_n in_o word_n in_o deed_n he_o every_o day_n yea_o every_o hour_n of_o a_o day_n yea_o i_o will_v say_v more_o every_o minute_n of_o a_o hour_n sin_v high_o and_o heinous_o all_o these_o way_n again_o what_o hope_n can_v the_o heart_n have_v in_o invocate_a any_o other_o they_o the_o true_a &_o everliving_a god_n where_o first_o man_n know_v not_o whether_o they_o hear_v their_o prayer_n or_o no_o &_o second_o they_o may_v doubt_v of_o their_o good_a will_n towards_o they_o as_o of_o a_o thing_n very_o uncerten_a &_o three_o be_v past_o all_o doubt_n of_o their_o ability_n to_o help_v and_o what_o uncertenty_n be_v this_o nay_o what_o a_o dangerous_a and_o deadly_a rock_n be_v it_o to_o fling_a man_n upon_o not_o only_o as_o in_o regard_n of_o thing_n appertain_v to_o this_o life_n which_o be_v much_o but_o as_o in_o regard_n of_o their_o soul_n &_o that_o that_o be_v to_o come_v which_o be_v more_o and_o yet_o of_o all_o other_o most_o heavy_a for_o a_o christian_a man_n as_o in_o regard_n of_o his_o own_o particular_a to_o think_v upon_o this_o be_v one_o that_o they_o teach_v all_o man_n in_o every_o place_n to_o doubt_v of_o their_o justification_n and_o salvation_n as_o though_o forsooth_o man_n heart_n be_v not_o â—o_o much_o incline_v to_o diffidence_n &_o distrustfulnes_n either_o by_o their_o own_o corruption_n or_o satan_n malice_n against_o they_o but_o that_o these_o as_o the_o devil_n bellows_n and_o blowefier_n must_v make_v it_o to_o burn_v and_o to_o flame_v out_o even_o to_o the_o utter_a waste_n what_o in_o they_o lie_v of_o all_o those_o that_o be_v infect_v with_o this_o poison_n and_o lest_o they_o shall_v seem_v to_o be_v mad_a without_o reason_n and_o to_o thrust_v a_o other_o into_o spiritual_a madness_n also_o they_o allege_v scripture_n lash_v out_o reason_n pretend_v authority_n of_o father_n and_o doctor_n and_o i_o can_v tell_v what_o as_o though_o with_o a_o mighty_a voice_n of_o great_a water_n they_o will_v carry_v all_o down_o hand_n smooth_a as_o we_o say_v before_o they_o these_o thing_n when_o i_o consider_v i_o do_v not_o only_o in_o holy_a zeal_n against_o the_o common_a adversary_n but_o in_o care_n of_o the_o peace_n for_o my_o own_o soul_n and_o in_o love_n towards_o other_o man_n think_v upon_o some_o thing_n that_o may_v serve_v for_o the_o confutation_n of_o the_o adversary_n and_o for_o the_o confirmation_n and_o establish_n of_o we_o in_o the_o present_a truth_n and_o though_o it_o be_v true_a that_o the_o overthrow_n of_o error_n and_o falsehood_n be_v in_o some_o sort_n the_o underprop_a of_o truth_n and_o verity_n yet_o have_v not_o i_o assay_v for_o the_o staâ—e_v of_o myself_o and_o other_o only_o to_o supplant_v corruption_n a_o untruth_n but_o also_o to_o defend_v that_o truth_n that_o god_n have_v propound_v in_o his_o word_n and_o we_o hear_v sound_v in_o our_o church_n namely_o that_o every_o faithful_a man_n ought_v to_o be_v certain_o assure_v of_o his_o free_a justification_n and_o everlasting_a salvation_n through_o christ_n and_o herein_o i_o have_v purpose_v and_o mind_n through_o god_n goodness_n to_o perform_v and_o observe_v this_o order_n follow_v that_o be_v first_o to_o answer_v whatsoever_o they_o say_v and_o object_n against_o this_o truth_n and_o then_o afterward_o to_o ratify_v and_o confirm_v it_o and_o this_o i_o take_v to_o be_v necessary_a not_o only_o because_o our_o adversary_n force_n be_v weaken_v yea_o utter_o overthrow_v our_o own_o may_v be_v find_v to_o be_v the_o more_o strong_a and_o better_a able_a to_o remoove_v out_o of_o the_o head_n &_o heart_n of_o man_n the_o truth_n tender_v may_v find_v the_o better_a entertainment_n there_o for_o even_o as_o a_o good_a gardener_n or_o husbandman_n labour_v first_o to_o fit_v the_o ground_n for_o seed_n and_o herb_n by_o dig_v and_o till_v of_o it_o and_o in_o root_n out_o noisome_a and_o bad_a thing_n assay_v to_o make_v it_o meet_v for_o the_o good_a seed_n â—e_n purpose_v to_o sow_v or_o set_v there_o so_o must_v we_o do_v then_o when_o we_o offer_v or_o mind_n to_o make_v fruitful_a in_o man_n mind_n the_o seed_n of_o the_o truth_n and_o word_n of_o god_n not_o only_o do_v what_o we_o can_v to_o remove_v and_o take_v away_o the_o natural_a blindness_n and_o ignorance_n of_o god_n and_o good_a thing_n that_o be_v in_o man_n yea_o and_o that_o same_o seed_n of_o error_n and_o heresy_n that_o satan_n by_o himself_o and_o his_o suppost_n in_o malice_n against_o god_n and_o mischief_n towards_o man_n have_v cast_v and_o spread_v abroad_o in_o the_o world_n but_o also_o to_o plant_v &_o cause_n to_o thrive_v the_o word_n of_o truth_n and_o life_n all_o our_o adversary_n argument_n be_v draw_v either_o from_o divine_a authority_n as_o the_o holy_a scripture_n and_o word_n of_o god_n foulie_o wrest_v and_o misunderstand_v as_o when_o we_o come_v to_o the_o handle_n of_o the_o place_n which_o they_o object_n shall_v i_o doubt_v not_o through_o god_n goodness_n plain_o appear_v or_o else_o from_o humane_a testimony_n and_o reason_n of_o which_o sure_o we_o need_v make_v no_o great_a reckon_n not_o only_o because_o they_o be_v as_o defence_n of_o falsehood_n through_o the_o malice_n of_o satan_n and_o their_o own_o corruption_n to_o allege_v any_o thing_n which_o through_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n shed_v abroad_o into_o our_o heart_n and_o the_o light_n of_o truth_n vouchsafe_v unto_o we_o we_o be_v not_o able_a both_o plain_o to_o descry_v and_o sufficient_o to_o confute_v we_o may_v let_v all_o that_o pass_v without_o any_o manner_n of_o touch_n at_o all_o we_o will_v begin_v first_o with_o those_o thing_n they_o allege_v out_o of_o scripture_n because_o they_o only_o indeed_o be_v material_a &_o so_o afterward_o come_v to_o humane_a authority_n now_o because_o the_o scripture_n of_o god_n be_v not_o unright_o divide_v into_o the_o old_a and_o new_a testament_n and_o they_o allege_v somewhat_o out_o of_o both_o for_o the_o maintenance_n of_o this_o corrupt_a point_n we_o will_v first_o answer_v the_o place_n of_o the_o old_a testament_n and_o after_o of_o the_o new_a place_n out_o of_o the_o old_a testament_n they_o common_o allege_v from_o thence_o such_o place_n as_o
apostle_n my_o grace_n be_v sufficient_a for_o thou_o &_o my_o strength_n shall_v be_v persect_v through_o weakness_n and_o why_o shall_v i_o make_v any_o doubt_n of_o this_o since_o god_n election_n which_o be_v ground_v upon_o the_o mutable_a purpose_n and_o decree_n of_o god_n be_v always_o firm_a and_o sure_a and_o since_o the_o word_n not_o of_o man_n but_o of_o god_n assure_v i_o that_o establish_v and_o make_v sure_a and_o give_v sundry_a consolation_n against_o it_o as_o first_o that_o none_o shall_v be_v terrify_v or_o offend_v with_o their_o fault_n because_o though_o such_o have_v or_o may_v have_v a_o place_n in_o the_o church_n yet_o be_v they_o never_o of_o the_o church_n because_o the_o church_n be_v the_o company_n of_o the_o elect_a which_o can_v perish_v and_o therefore_o also_o can_v fall_v from_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n in_o christ_n second_o because_o they_o be_v anoint_v of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n not_o only_o with_o true_a knowledge_n of_o salvation_n and_o eternal_a life_n but_o with_o all_o other_o grace_n from_o the_o same_o and_o namely_o with_o the_o gift_n of_o perseverance_n but_o his_o own_o word_n be_v most_o excellent_a and_o therefore_o let_v we_o mark_v they_o they_o go_v out_o from_o we_o say_v he_o but_o they_o be_v not_o of_o we_o for_o if_o they_o have_v be_v of_o we_o they_o shall_v have_v continue_v with_o us._n but_o this_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o it_o may_v appear_v that_o they_o be_v not_o all_o of_o we_o but_o you_o have_v a_o ointment_n from_o the_o holy_a one_o and_o know_v all_o thing_n and_o now_o with_o what_o scripture_n tell_v i_o there_o be_v not_o so_o much_o as_o a_o shadow_n of_o turn_v in_o his_o majesty_n which_o yet_o that_o i_o may_v be_v the_o better_o persuade_v thereof_o he_o have_v always_o by_o performance_n show_v himself_o at_o all_o time_n and_o to_o all_o his_o people_n to_o be_v such_o a_o one_o show_v thou_o the_o contrary_a if_o thou_o can_v but_o satan_n further_o press_v this_o temptation_n of_o man_n weakness_n and_o ability_n to_o fall_v away_o from_o the_o act_n indeed_o thereof_o and_o the_o effect_n follow_v from_o the_o same_o say_n after_o this_o sort_n thou_o have_v truth_n be_v as_o contrary_a to_o that_o error_n and_o falsehood_n as_o day_n be_v to_o darkness_n and_o as_o for_o assure_a comfort_n in_o distress_n or_o distrust_n it_o be_v not_o where_o to_o be_v find_v but_o general_o in_o the_o same_o word_n also_o and_o particular_o in_o the_o sweet_a promise_n thereof_o which_o as_o god_n alone_o that_o be_v altogether_o faithful_a have_v plentiful_o for_o the_o reason_n above_o allege_v it_o must_v signify_v certainty_n and_o assurednes_n though_o not_o of_o the_o feel_n of_o this_o truth_n always_o in_o the_o heart_n and_o mind_n of_o the_o godly_a who_o sometime_o feel_v it_o and_o sometime_o not_o yet_o of_o truth_n and_o certainty_n of_o the_o doctrine_n itself_o which_o can_v be_v no_o more_o uncerten_a then_o god_n himself_o from_o who_o it_o commteh_a or_o they_o the_o spirit_n itself_o by_o which_o the_o apostle_n preach_v &_o deliver_v the_o same_o to_o conclude_v this_o be_v the_o plain_a meaning_n of_o the_o apostle_n that_o from_o the_o former_a disputation_n or_o point_n that_o before_o have_v be_v handle_v he_o do_v necessary_o gather_v &_o fine_o conclude_v that_o a_o christian_n or_o faithful_a man_n be_v shall_v crave_v god_n aid_n and_o assistance_n against_o sin_n and_o satan_n if_o the_o apostle_n here_o then_o have_v forbid_v the_o corinthian_n to_o trust_v in_o the_o promise_n of_o god_n it_o have_v be_v somewhat_o but_o he_o be_v so_o far_o from_o that_o that_o here_o he_o blame_v they_o for_o be_v so_o much_o puff_v up_o in_o the_o vain_a confidence_n of_o flesh_n and_o blood_n and_o christ_n now_o what_o word_n be_v there_o in_o this_o text_n that_o will_v imply_v doubt_v if_o it_o be_v any_o it_o be_v fear_n and_o tremble_a but_o they_o as_o we_o have_v hear_v already_o import_v no_o such_o matter_n but_o rather_o signify_v reverence_n of_o god_n and_o a_o certain_a kind_n of_o childlike_a awe_n and_o loathsomnes_n to_o offend_v or_o displease_v so_o gracious_a a_o father_n as_o our_o heavenly_a father_n be_v i_o think_v we_o may_v well_o expound_v this_o place_n by_o a_o sentence_n of_o the_o prophet_n psal_n 2._o where_o he_o say_v serve_v the_o lord_n in_o fear_n they_o must_v needs_o be_v disquiet_v that_o be_v subject_a to_o it_o for_o how_o can_v it_o be_v that_o he_o that_o know_v he_o have_v god_n for_o his_o judge_n and_o not_o for_o his_o father_n as_o the_o faithful_a people_n only_o have_v he_o so_o can_v be_v quiet_a in_o mind_n be_v in_o his_o own_o heart_n guilty_a of_o horrible_a sin_n as_o against_o god_n himself_o in_o heaven_n so_o against_o man_n upon_o earth_n and_o therefore_o we_o may_v safe_o say_v that_o a_o wicked_a person_n be_v either_o not_o at_o all_o quiet_a or_o else_o the_o grace_n that_o he_o will_v seem_v to_o have_v be_v nothing_o else_o but_o security_n or_o senselesnes_n and_o this_o fear_n be_v amplify_v by_o comparison_n of_o the_o great_a namely_o god_n and_o his_o judgement_n into_o which_o amplification_n he_o enter_v not_o so_o much_o for_o they_o to_o who_o he_o write_v though_o it_o may_v be_v true_a they_o have_v some_o need_n and_o use_v of_o it_o as_o for_o other_o that_o will_v not_o easy_o be_v bring_v to_o feeling_n that_o so_o sting_v either_o with_o the_o testimony_n of_o their_o own_o heart_n or_o with_o the_o greatness_n of_o god_n wrath_n and_o judgement_n against_o we_o must_v know_v that_o faith_n and_o a_o good_a conscience_n be_v unseperable_a companion_n and_o go_v as_o it_o be_v arm_n in_o arm_n together_o as_o the_o apostle_n show_v 1._o tim._n 1.19_o yea_o and_o that_o the_o fruit_n accompany_v they_o be_v never_o utter_o sunder_v from_o they_o but_o at_o some_o one_o time_n or_o another_o be_v to_o be_v find_v in_o their_o measure_n where_o the_o thing_n themselves_o be_v and_o that_o therefore_o they_o that_o have_v a_o good_a conscience_n have_v boldness_n towards_o god_n and_o be_v well_o certify_v of_o his_o grace_n and_o their_o own_o salvation_n thereby_o and_o that_o this_o in_o his_o meaning_n indeed_o it_o may_v appear_v by_o sundry_a word_n before_o go_v as_o when_o he_o say_v by_o this_o that_o be_v true_a and_o sincere_a love_n to_o our_o brethren_n we_o know_v that_o we_o be_v of_o the_o truth_n that_o be_v belong_v unto_o god_n who_o he_o signify_v also_o in_o the_o word_n follow_v when_o be_v say_v and_o shall_v before_o he_o assure_v our_o heart_n which_o assurance_n bring_v with_o it_o peace_n and_o tranquillity_n can_v but_o shut_v out_o and_o kill_v as_o it_o be_v all_o doubt_v and_o again_o in_o the_o unlawful_a whereas_o all_o the_o doctrine_n of_o god_n be_v true_a and_o holy_a even_o as_o he_o himself_o &_o though_o man_n either_o in_o practice_n or_o persuasion_n will_v condemn_v he_o or_o and_o according_a to_o truth_n and_o charity_n may_v judge_v of_o other_o and_o that_o without_o any_o special_a revelation_n as_o these_o man_n fantasy_n that_o we_o be_v of_o the_o number_n of_o god_n elect_v as_o if_o god_n give_v we_o a_o effectual_a call_n through_o the_o ministry_n of_o the_o word_n and_o work_v of_o the_o spirit_n and_o make_v we_o comfortable_o to_o feel_v the_o imputation_n of_o christ_n righteousness_n and_o a_o steadfast_a hope_n of_o eternal_a glorification_n we_o may_v assure_v ourselves_o of_o our_o election_n as_o we_o may_v perceive_v by_o that_o the_o apostle_n say_v rom._n 8._o who_o he_o have_v predestine_v they_o also_o he_o have_v call_v &_o who_o he_o have_v call_v they_o also_o he_o have_v justify_v and_o they_o who_o he_o have_v justify_v they_o he_o have_v also_o glorify_v and_o 2._o timoth._n 1_o god_n have_v save_v we_o and_o call_v we_o with_o a_o holy_a call_n not_o according_a to_o our_o work_n but_o according_a to_o his_o own_o purpose_n and_o grace_n which_o be_v give_v to_o we_o through_o jese_n christ_n before_o the_o world_n be_v as_o also_o if_o he_o give_v we_o care_n and_o conscience_n of_o well-doing_n certain_a and_o also_o as_o in_o regard_n of_o our_o faint_a heart_n and_o feeble_a hope_n which_o by_o this_o mean_n be_v uphold_v as_o the_o church_n canticl_n 2._o be_v stay_v with_o flagon_n and_o comfort_v with_o appell_n as_o for_o that_o which_o they_o speak_v of_o particular_a and_o special_a revelation_n it_o be_v against_o the_o truth_n of_o holy_a scripture_n and_o ground_n of_o christian_n religion_n for_o god_n have_v in_o these_o latter_a day_n speak_v unto_o we_o in_o the_o person_n of_o his_o son_n and_o absolute_o and_o full_o reveal_v his_o will_n in_o his_o word_n with_o this_o threaten_n that_o whosoever_o add_v thereunto_o upon_o he_o shall_v be_v pour_v forth_o all_o the_o plague_n write_v therein_o he_o have_v teach_v we_o thereby_o to_o cast_v away_o and_o reject_v as_o devilish_a and_o abominable_a all_o such_o conceit_n beside_o that_o it_o strong_o savour_v of_o anabaptistry_n which_o for_o many_o fond_a fantasy_n of_o their_o own_o have_v nothing_o to_o say_v but_o only_o pretend_v odd_a revelation_n or_o vision_n but_o yet_o our_o adversary_n urge_v this_o point_n further_o and_o say_v that_o man_n must_v beware_v of_o rash_a enter_v into_o handle_v or_o hear_v of_o that_o same_o reverend_a &_o hide_v mystery_n of_o god_n predestination_n and_o who_o will_v not_o say_v so_o as_o well_o as_o they_o but_o let_v we_o see_v whether_o this_o be_v a_o good_a argument_n god_n predestination_n must_v not_o be_v rash_o rush_v into_o either_o for_o hear_v or_o handle_v therefore_o man_n must_v doubt_v of_o god_n favour_n that_o way_n &_o every_o other_o way_n beside_o it_o follow_v not_o no_o more_o than_o this_o the_o sacred_a authority_n of_o prince_n and_o magistrate_n must_v not_o be_v esteem_v or_o violate_v as_o a_o light_a thing_n therefore_o subject_n must_v doubt_v whether_o their_o princess_n favour_n or_o affect_v they_o i_o think_v it_o will_v rather_o follow_v there_o be_v in_o god_n such_o high_a and_o heavenly_a he_o have_v give_v we_o to_o discern_v it_o by_o or_o when_o we_o will_v be_v more_o curious_a in_o it_o than_o he_o have_v be_v please_v to_o manifest_v in_o his_o word_n now_o that_o this_o be_v to_o be_v avoid_v and_o to_o be_v take_v heed_n of_o as_o a_o high_a sin_n &_o the_o infection_n of_o our_o soul_n every_o man_n will_v confess_v because_o it_o be_v to_o be_v wise_a above_o measure_n &_o in_o the_o thing_n that_o god_n will_v not_o have_v
though_o that_o this_o may_v suffice_v for_o full_a answer_n unto_o all_o yet_o it_o like_v we_o a_o little_a further_o to_o enlarge_v ourselves_o herein_o if_o our_o justification_n before_o god_n and_o reconciliation_n with_o god_n do_v depend_v either_o of_o the_o law_n itself_o or_o of_o the_o dignity_n and_o worthiness_n of_o our_o work_n than_o the_o mayor_n proposition_n shall_v of_o necessity_n be_v true_a but_o that_o can_v be_v because_o the_o law_n be_v not_o give_v to_o justify_v but_o to_o condemn_v rather_o and_o we_o know_v that_o all_o our_o righteousness_n be_v as_o a_o defile_a cloth_n &_o so_o indeed_o we_o shall_v never_o sure_o conclude_v with_o ourselves_o touch_n our_o salvation_n or_o find_v peace_n of_o conscience_n at_o home_n in_o our_o heart_n so_o that_o neither_o of_o those_o be_v true_a the_o mayor_n or_o proposition_n can_v be_v sound_a or_o right_o but_o since_o our_o justification_n before_o god_n &_o reconciliation_n with_o god_n be_v not_o of_o the_o law_n or_o of_o the_o dignity_n of_o our_o work_n but_o be_v from_o christ_n absolute_a obedience_n &_o the_o holy_a gospel_n which_o every_o where_n teach_v that_o christ_n be_v therefore_o send_v and_o come_v into_o the_o world_n that_o he_o may_v save_v sinner_n and_o redeem_v we_o from_o the_o curse_n of_o the_o law_n may_v make_v we_o righteouse_a through_o faith_n in_o he_o the_o mayor_n or_o proposition_n separate_v as_o we_o see_v it_o be_v from_o christ_n and_o understand_v as_o it_o must_v be_v and_o may_v appear_v by_o the_o minor_a not_o of_o christ_n but_o of_o our_o obedience_n can_v not_o be_v true_a beside_o since_o the_o word_n general_o and_o more_o particular_o the_o gospel_n a_o special_a part_n of_o it_o every_o where_o instruct_v we_o not_o to_o respect_v our_o own_o dignity_n or_o worthiness_n which_o indeed_o be_v none_o but_o all_o manner_n of_o unworthines_n nor_o yet_o to_o behold_v our_o own_o unworthiness_n otherwise_o then_o to_o humble_v we_o before_o god_n and_o in_o ourselves_o and_o to_o make_v we_o to_o run_v unto_o christ_n and_o to_o his_o righteousness_n more_o earnest_o &_o speedy_o then_o we_o do_v but_o send_v we_o unto_o christ_n and_o to_o his_o merit_n and_o worthiness_n that_o so_o for_o his_o sake_n we_o may_v be_v reconcile_v unto_o god_n that_o be_v to_o say_v both_o justify_v and_o sanctify_v before_o he_o and_o receive_v unto_o eternal_a life_n there_o be_v no_o reason_n to_o receive_v but_o much_o and_o great_a reason_n to_o refuse_v this_o minor_a as_o unsound_a insufficient_a either_o utter_o exclude_v or_o else_o no_o whit_n at_o all_o mention_v christ_n who_o of_o god_n be_v make_v unto_o we_o wisdom_n righteousness_n sanctification_n and_o salvation_n and_o in_o who_o be_v justify_v through_o faith_n we_o have_v peace_n towards_o god_n etc._n etc._n yea_o we_o say_v further_o that_o since_o by_o the_o law_n righteousness_n can_v come_v unto_o man_n as_o the_o apostle_n show_v in_o many_o place_n of_o his_o writing_n and_o namely_o in_o his_o epistle_n to_o the_o roman_n and_o galathian_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o gospel_n be_v therefore_o make_v manifest_a that_o both_o it_o may_v discover_v unto_o we_o a_o mean_a a_o manner_n yea_o and_o matter_n of_o justification_n that_o in_o the_o law_n can_v not_o be_v find_v out_o and_o also_o teach_v we_o how_o to_o appropriate_v and_o apply_v the_o same_o unto_o our_o own_o heart_n last_o concern_v the_o minor_a we_o answer_v and_o say_v that_o no_o man_n have_v in_o himself_o as_o of_o himself_o that_o perfect_a and_o obedience_n of_o the_o law_n that_o they_o speak_v of_o howbeit_o we_o be_v assure_v that_o all_o that_o have_v christ_n have_v it_o because_o they_o do_v by_o faith_n lie_v hold_v of_o christ_n and_o his_o perfect_a obedience_n the_o want_n or_o lack_v of_o then_o own_o in_o themselves_o be_v so_o far_o of_o from_o hinder_v christ_n righteousness_n to_o they_o and_o in_o they_o that_o it_o rather_o further_v they_o thereto_o for_o he_o that_o be_v fill_v with_o his_o own_o can_v have_v no_o part_n of_o christ_n the_o reason_n be_v because_o he_o that_o be_v full_a though_o it_o be_v but_o of_o airy_a and_o windy_a matter_n or_o as_o we_o say_v bad_a repletion_n can_v hardly_o or_o not_o at_o all_o till_o he_o be_v purge_v of_o that_o admit_v any_o more_o but_o also_o because_o there_o be_v such_o a_o flat_a opposition_n between_o christ_n righteousness_n and_o man_n that_o they_o can_v both_o be_v at_o one_o and_o the_o self_n same_o time_n in_o one_o and_o the_o self_n same_o subject_n but_o the_o have_v of_o the_o one_o be_v the_o privation_n of_o the_o other_o as_o the_o apostle_n show_v in_o many_o place_n of_o his_o writing_n and_o namely_o rom._n 10._o verse_n 3._o and_o also_o rom._n 11._o verse_n 5.6_o psal_n 3.6_o and_o this_o i_o think_v may_v satisfy_v any_o reasonable_a man_n yea_o stop_n his_o mouth_n from_o bark_v or_o bellow_v against_o the_o truth_n of_o god_n howbeit_o our_o adversary_n yet_o press_v this_o point_n further_o and_o object_n say_v christ_n say_v in_o the_o gospel_n if_o any_o man_n love_v i_o he_o will_v keep_v my_o commandment_n or_o say_n or_o word_n but_o no_o man_n keep_v his_o word_n therefore_o say_v they_o no_o man_n know_v whether_o god_n love_v he_o yea_o or_o no._n first_o for_o the_o form_n of_o the_o syllogysmo_n and_o then_o for_o the_o matter_n in_o the_o conclusion_n there_o be_v more_o then_o be_v in_o the_o promise_n for_o whereas_o the_o mayor_n teach_v we_o that_o obedience_n to_o christ_n word_n be_v a_o sign_n unto_o other_o and_o a_o pledge_n unto_o ourselves_o of_o some_o love_n that_o god_n have_v wrought_v in_o our_o heart_n towards_o he_o the_o conclusion_n turn_v it_o up_o side_n down_o and_o say_v no_o man_n can_v know_v whether_o god_n love_v he_o yea_o or_o no_o as_o though_o our_o love_n &_o god_n love_n be_v all_o one_o or_o as_o though_o god_n love_v not_o many_o i_o will_v not_o say_v unto_o eternal_a life_n for_o that_o love_n only_o belong_v to_o the_o elect_a but_o in_o many_o outward_a respect_n from_o which_o also_o as_o it_o shall_v seem_v christ_n himself_o math._n 5._o infer_v this_o doctrine_n love_v they_o that_o hate_v you_o etc._n etc._n and_o make_v this_o comfortable_a use_n of_o it_o that_o you_o may_v be_v the_o child_n of_o your_o heavenly_a father_n who_o can_v set_v his_o sun_n to_o shine_v &_o his_o rain_n to_o rain_v upon_o the_o just_a and_o unjust_a now_o to_o the_o matter_n all_o the_o doubt_n rest_v in_o the_o true_a and_o natural_a meaning_n of_o this_o phrase_n keep_v my_o word_n and_o say_n that_o our_o saviour_n shall_v mean_v thereby_o absolute_a obedience_n and_o performance_n thereof_o there_o be_v no_o likelihood_n for_o he_o that_o know_v the_o heart_n of_o all_o know_v also_o that_o even_o in_o the_o best_a there_o be_v great_a defect_n and_o want_n and_o to_o have_v deliver_v such_o a_o speech_n i_o mean_v in_o that_o sense_n and_o meaning_n have_v be_v by_o his_o own_o word_n to_o have_v cross_v and_o thuart_v his_o own_o knowledge_n and_o to_o have_v speak_v more_o indeed_o then_o truth_n be_v why_o they_o what_o be_v it_o that_o he_o will_v signify_v and_o set_v out_o unto_o we_o thereby_o sure_o this_o much_o that_o the_o care_n and_o conscience_n that_o the_o faithful_a have_v to_o obey_v his_o will_n and_o these_o good_a beginning_n and_o proceed_n that_o they_o have_v make_v therein_o by_o his_o spirit_n he_o will_v accept_v they_o as_o absolute_a and_o cover_v with_o the_o fullness_n of_o righteousness_n and_o obedience_n that_o be_v and_o be_v in_o himself_o and_o so_o present_v they_o in_o the_o sight_n of_o his_o heavenly_a father_n neither_o do_v that_o dislike_n i_o that_o one_o answer_v hereto_o namely_o that_o this_o be_v a_o sentence_n or_o say_n of_o the_o gospel_n must_v not_o be_v understand_v of_o the_o perfect_a fulfil_n of_o the_o law_n of_o god_n for_o that_o be_v a_o manner_n of_o speech_n belong_v rather_o to_o the_o law_n then_o to_o the_o gospel_n but_o of_o faith_n and_o a_o good_a conscience_n or_o as_o we_o haur_n hear_v already_o the_o beginning_n and_o grooth_o in_o goodness_n that_o god_n by_o his_o word_n and_o spirit_n have_v wrought_v in_o the_o heart_n of_o the_o regenerate_v for_o in_o this_o sentence_n as_o it_o be_v a_o part_n and_o piece_n of_o the_o voice_n of_o the_o gospel_n these_o term_n to_o keep_v christ_n saying_n or_o word_n signify_v nothing_o else_o but_o by_o faith_n to_o embrace_v and_o to_o hold_v fast_o the_o truth_n and_o purity_n of_o that_o doctrine_n that_o in_o the_o gospel_n be_v commend_v unto_o we_o concern_v christ_n and_o as_o sound_a member_n of_o the_o church_n to_o profess_v it_o open_o and_o as_o faithful_a
minister_n to_o publish_v it_o &_o spread_v it_o abroad_o and_o all_o as_o man_n mindful_a of_o and_o careful_a for_o the_o glory_n of_o our_o god_n to_o addorne_v and_o beautify_v it_o and_o to_o do_v what_o we_o can_v in_o holy_a life_n to_o make_v it_o honourable_a and_o so_o be_v it_o that_o christ_n say_v and_o mean_v also_o joh._n 17._o where_n speak_v of_o his_o apostle_n he_o affirm_v that_o they_o keep_v the_o word_n of_o his_o heavenly_a father_n and_o therefore_o also_o to_o such_o as_o after_o this_o manner_n embrace_v the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o profess_v it_o believe_v it_o and_o obey_v it_o in_o some_o measure_n be_v very_o large_a and_o excellent_a grace_n promise_v as_o justification_n sanctification_n and_o glorification_n etc._n etc._n not_o because_o imperfect_a work_n can_v merit_v or_o deserve_v any_o more_o at_o god_n hand_n then_o gross_a corruption_n for_o as_o in_o regard_n of_o his_o absolute_a justice_n no_o imperfect_a thing_n can_v please_v he_o but_o because_o that_o god_n through_o his_o mercy_n and_o christ_n obedience_n be_v please_v as_o to_o forgive_v and_o forget_v our_o defect_n so_o to_o crown_v his_o own_o grace_n in_o we_o and_o by_o these_o large_a promise_n and_o performance_n also_o to_o whet_v we_o unto_o perfection_n in_o this_o life_n though_o indeed_o we_o can_v never_o here_o attain_v thereto_o now_o the_o mayor_n be_v thus_o expound_v and_o these_o word_n to_o keep_v christ_n saying_n be_v take_v in_o this_o sense_n in_o the_o minor_a or_o assumption_n we_o do_v not_o deny_v the_o minor_a as_o untrue_a because_o christ_n say_v of_o his_o apostle_n john_n 17._o they_o have_v keep_v thy_o word_n and_o all_o that_o they_o have_v and_o do_v in_o sort_n as_o before_o be_v express_v embrace_n and_o hold_v fast_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o gospel_n keep_v faith_n and_o a_o good_a conscience_n as_o the_o scripture_n say_v may_v right_o be_v term_v in_o their_o measure_n to_o keep_v christ_n say_n though_o he_o will_v not_o or_o dare_v not_o affirm_v they_o do_v it_o so_o well_o and_o in_o such_o a_o large_a measure_n as_o the_o apostle_n do_v 7_o another_o argument_n they_o frame_v as_o follow_v he_o that_o by_o the_o gospel_n can_v know_v whether_o we_o have_v sufficient_a repentance_n for_o his_o sin_n he_o can_v be_v assure_v touch_v justification_n or_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n towards_o he_o or_o concern_v salvation_n for_o god_n in_o the_o gospel_n require_v repentance_n of_o us._n but_o no_o man_n by_o the_o gospel_n can_v tell_v whether_o he_o have_v sufficient_a repentance_n yea_o or_o no_o therefore_o no_o man_n no_o not_o by_o the_o gospel_n know_v or_o can_v know_v concern_v god_n grace_n towards_o he_o &_o his_o own_o salvation_n there_o be_v many_o thing_n in_o the_o maior_fw-la proposition_n that_o have_v need_n of_o explanation_n first_o that_o word_n of_o sufficient_a repentance_n be_v not_o only_o ambiguous_a and_o doubtful_a but_o full_a of_o unsoundnesse_n as_o though_o forsooth_o our_o justification_n before_o god_n or_o reconciliation_n with_o he_o stand_v upon_o the_o dignity_n sufficiency_n and_o merit_n of_o our_o repentance_n that_o be_v of_o our_o contrition_n faith_n and_o new_a obedience_n whereas_o we_o know_v it_o depend_v not_o upon_o all_o or_o any_o of_o these_o thing_n but_o upon_o the_o absolute_a obedience_n of_o our_o saviour_n christ_n which_o as_o it_o be_v sufficient_a indeed_o to_o take_v away_o all_o sin_n so_o it_o be_v much_o more_o powerful_a to_o supply_v the_o defect_n of_o the_o fruit_n of_o our_o faith_n or_o as_o though_o again_o we_o can_v sufficient_o and_o enough_o sorrow_n for_o our_o sin_n whereas_o if_o we_o weigh_v not_o only_o all_o our_o sin_n but_o any_o of_o they_o in_o it_o own_o nature_n and_o according_a to_o the_o grievous_a effect_n it_o bring_v forth_o or_o the_o heavy_a judgement_n of_o god_n against_o we_o for_o the_o same_o we_o shall_v find_v in_o our_o conscience_n and_o in_o truth_n before_o god_n that_o though_o we_o will_v or_o can_v do_v nothing_o else_o all_o the_o day_n of_o our_o life_n but_o repent_v we_o of_o that_o one_o yet_o we_o can_v not_o sufficient_o perform_v it_o therefore_o or_o as_o though_o we_o have_v some_o sufficiency_n in_o ourselves_o to_o all_o or_o any_o good_a thing_n whereas_o the_o apostle_n tell_v we_o in_o plain_a &_o evident_a term_n that_o we_o be_v not_o sufficient_a of_o ourselves_o as_o of_o ourselves_o to_o think_v any_o thing_n much_o less_o sufficient_o to_o repent_v but_o that_o all_o our_o sufficiency_n be_v of_o god_n who_o work_v in_o we_o both_o the_o will_n and_o the_o deed_n according_a to_o his_o good_a pleasure_n secondlie_o whereas_o the_o mayor_n affirm_v that_o unless_o a_o man_n have_v sufficient_a repentance_n for_o his_o sin_n he_o can_v be_v assure_v of_o justification_n etc._n etc._n we_o answer_v that_o be_v false_a for_o though_o as_o in_o regard_n of_o that_o which_o be_v want_v in_o himself_o he_o can_v be_v assure_v yet_o as_o in_o regard_n of_o that_o which_o for_o he_o be_v supply_v by_o another_o and_o accept_v of_o he_o to_o who_o that_o supply_n be_v due_a acknowledge_v himself_o content_v and_o pay_v he_o that_o ought_v the_o debt_n need_v not_o doubt_n much_o less_o distrust_n so_o be_v the_o case_n between_o god_n and_o we_o through_o the_o death_n &_o obedience_n of_o christ_n his_o son_n &_o our_o elder_a brother_n for_o god_n confess_v contentment_n and_o acknowledge_v satisfaction_n when_o he_o say_v this_o be_v my_o wellbe_n love_v son_n in_o who_o i_o be_o well_o please_v &c_n &c_n and_o christ_n have_v pay_v the_o debt_n because_o he_o have_v put_v out_o the_o hand_n writing_n of_o ordinance_n that_o be_v against_o we_o principal_a part_n of_o the_o office_n of_o the_o gospel_n to_o certify_v man_n heart_n of_o repentance_n whereas_o the_o chief_a duty_n of_o the_o gospel_n be_v to_o publish_v forgiveness_n of_o sin_n and_o by_o consequent_a eternal_a life_n also_o for_o where_o the_o first_o be_v the_o latter_a can_v choose_v but_o follow_v in_o the_o name_n and_o obedience_n of_o jesus_n christ_n and_o though_o we_o will_v not_o or_o can_v deny_v but_o that_o repentance_n be_v a_o part_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o join_v with_o the_o remission_n of_o sin_n yet_o be_v not_o therefore_o annex_v thereunto_o that_o in_o the_o worthiness_n or_o suffiencie_n of_o it_o we_o may_v merit_v assurance_n but_o that_o in_o the_o have_v of_o it_o it_o may_v pledge_v up_o in_o our_o heart_n the_o forgiveness_n of_o all_o our_o transgression_n and_o yet_o not_o as_o though_o it_o be_v of_o ourselves_o though_o it_o be_v in_o ourselves_o but_o as_o it_o be_v god_n work_n in_o we_o he_o give_v this_o glory_n to_o his_o own_o work_n to_o testify_v this_o favour_n unto_o our_o heart_n of_o reconciliation_n and_o peace_n indeed_o if_o repentance_n be_v of_o and_o from_o man_n it_o be_v somewhat_o that_o they_o say_v but_o be_v simple_o and_o only_o from_o god_n who_o if_o he_o do_v not_o effectual_o batter_v man_n stony_a and_o hard_a heart_n they_o can_v return_v unto_o he_o they_o can_v think_v or_o speak_v thus_o but_o with_o great_a sin_n against_o god_n and_o their_o own_o soul_n last_o concern_v the_o confirmation_n of_o the_o proposition_n in_o these_o word_n for_o god_n in_o the_o gospel_n require_v repentance_n of_o we_o we_o confess_v the_o truth_n of_o the_o sentence_n but_o not_o in_o their_o sense_n for_o that_o god_n demand_v it_o no_o man_n i_o think_v will_v deny_v because_o every_o where_o almost_o it_o be_v say_v repent_v and_o believe_v the_o gospel_n but_o he_o that_o require_v it_o for_o these_o end_n &_o purpose_n that_o these_o man_n imagine_v as_o namely_o that_o it_o shall_v puff_n we_o up_o in_o pride_n and_o presumption_n of_o merit_n that_o we_o shall_v think_v we_o have_v it_o of_o ourselves_o and_o so_o therein_o assure_v our_o heart_n that_o be_v most_o false_a but_o rather_o because_o it_o come_v from_o
effect_n of_o the_o sight_n and_o sense_n of_o unworthines_n in_o the_o saint_n of_o god_n but_o hasten_v rather_o unto_o the_o lord_n that_o so_o in_o he_o that_o account_v they_o worthy_a of_o every_o thing_n and_o from_o he_o alone_o they_o may_v be_v replenish_v with_o his_o abundant_a mercy_n only_o that_o word_n sufficient_o &_o worthy_o which_o here_o &_o else_o where_o they_o urge_v so_o much_o in_o the_o sense_n that_o they_o use_v it_o &_o to_o the_o purpose_n that_o they_o apply_v it_o we_o utter_o mislike_v for_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n in_o our_o justification_n salvation_n etc._n etc._n do_v not_o depend_v upon_o our_o sufficiency_n &_o worthiness_n which_o indeed_o be_v none_o if_o we_o respect_v our_o self_n as_o we_o have_v hear_v sundry_a time_n already_o but_o upon_o the_o free_a &_o gracious_a promise_n of_o god_n &_o upon_o the_o absolute_a &_o infinite_a merit_n of_o christ_n obedience_n for_o therefore_o indeed_o be_v the_o promise_v publish_v and_o therefore_o also_o be_v the_o son_n of_o god_n become_v &_o make_v our_o mediator_n &_o intercessor_n because_o we_o be_v utter_o unworthy_a of_o all_o or_o any_o favour_n whereas_o if_o we_o have_v worthiness_n in_o and_o of_o ourselves_o these_o thing_n have_v be_v needle_n &_o that_o for_o his_o sake_n &_o through_o his_o obedience_n the_o father_n may_v declare_v himself_o to_o be_v gracious_a &_o merciful_a unto_o we_o according_a unto_o which_o it_o be_v say_v roman_n the_o 8._o there_o be_v no_o condemnation_n to_o they_o that_o be_v in_o christ_n jesus_n etc._n etc._n so_o that_o we_o may_v see_v that_o a_o godly_a hart_n will_v easy_o confess_v yea_o aught_o indeed_o to_o acknowledge_v both_o that_o he_o be_v unworthy_a which_o he_o can_v choose_v but_o do_v if_o he_o grow_v in_o it_o and_o sometime_o to_o be_v at_o a_o stand_n as_o it_o be_v and_o this_o be_v that_o that_o the_o apostle_n say_v the_o just_a proceed_v from_o faith_n to_o faith_n and_o again_o the_o spirit_n of_o and_o withstand_v satan_n say_v who_o resist_v strong_a in_o faith_n as_o also_o this_o that_o the_o apostle_n saint_n paul_n say_v of_o abraham_n the_o father_n of_o the_o faithful_a and_o friend_n of_o god_n that_o he_o not_o weak_a in_o faith_n etc._n etc._n roman_n the_o four_o yea_o one_o and_o the_o self_n same_o godly_a man_n as_o in_o respect_n of_o sundry_a time_n and_o diverse_a occasion_n may_v be_v say_v to_o be_v strong_a in_o this_o holy_a virtue_n and_o weak_a also_o what_o a_o faith_n be_v this_o in_o peter_n by_o christ_n comfortable_a word_n not_o only_o to_o expel_v fear_n but_o in_o the_o strength_n and_o power_n of_o christ_n speech_n unto_o he_o and_o say_n come_v to_o walk_v upon_o the_o water_n and_o yet_o what_o weakness_n be_v this_o in_o see_v of_o a_o wind_n to_o be_v afraid_a etc._n etc._n god_n make_v we_o in_o he_o to_o behold_v this_o truth_n that_o while_o we_o look_v upon_o he_o through_o christ_n we_o be_v strong_a and_o bold_a as_o a_o lion_n but_o when_o we_o leave_v upon_o ourselves_o or_o the_o arm_n of_o flesh_n and_o blood_n or_o regard_v calamity_n we_o be_v as_o weak_a as_o water_n and_o ready_a to_o sink_v therefore_o in_o the_o maior_fw-la proposition_n we_o may_v well_o and_o easy_o perceive_v that_o they_o neither_o deal_v plain_o with_o the_o cause_n for_o as_o in_o that_o behalf_n they_o shall_v not_o have_v use_v infirmity_n or_o weakness_n of_o faith_n but_o doubt_v because_o the_o question_n be_v not_o of_o weakness_n and_o want_n in_o god_n saint_n which_o they_o carry_v about_o with_o they_o not_o only_o in_o their_o faith_n but_o in_o all_o other_o good_a grace_n beside_o but_o of_o doubt_v and_o distrustfulness_n which_o indeed_o be_v wickedness_n and_o evil_n these_o two_o differ_v as_o much_o as_o good_a and_o bad_a light_a and_o darkness_n and_o that_o not_o only_o in_o their_o manner_n and_o nature_n but_o in_o their_o effect_n also_o weakness_n work_v in_o we_o run_v unto_o god_n for_o strength_n and_o doubt_v drive_v we_o for_o the_o time_n and_o in_o some_o measure_n from_o he_o to_o other_o that_o indeed_o can_v not_o steed_n we_o though_o it_o may_v be_v we_o may_v deem_v otherwise_o i_o say_v they_o neither_o deal_v plain_o with_o the_o cause_n itself_o nor_o with_o the_o truth_n of_o religion_n and_o the_o word_n for_o faith_n or_o confidence_n in_o god_n through_o jesus_n christ_n whether_o it_o be_v firm_a or_o unfirme_v strong_a or_o weak_a may_v be_v assure_v and_o certain_o determine_v concern_v god_n grace_n forgiveness_n of_o sin_n and_o eternal_a salvation_n though_o not_o as_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o strength_n or_o certainty_n of_o itself_o yet_o as_o in_o respect_n of_o the_o strength_n power_n and_o assurance_n of_o the_o affirm_v of_o all_o other_o doctrine_n of_o the_o like_a nature_n but_o if_o there_o be_v any_o true_a and_o holy_a doctrine_n upon_o which_o this_o blame_n light_v or_o be_v say_v through_o the_o malice_n and_o transgression_n of_o man_n or_o by_o occasion_n as_o we_o say_v or_o through_o the_o fault_n negligence_n or_o ignorance_n of_o they_o that_o abuse_v it_o or_o be_v offend_v at_o it_o doctrine_n of_o god_n grace_n and_o yet_o because_o some_o turn_n it_o into_o wantonness_n as_o in_o the_o apostle_n time_n and_o our_o day_n shall_v it_o not_o therefore_o be_v hear_v sound_n in_o the_o church_n of_o god_n what_o be_v more_o comfortable_a than_o the_o doctrine_n of_o forgiunesse_fw-fr of_o sin_n through_o christ_n obedience_n and_o yet_o because_o some_o then_o and_o now_o adays_o also_o hear_v this_o that_o where_o sin_n have_v abound_v there_o grace_n have_v abound_v much_o more_o do_v and_o do_v shameless_o and_o graceles_o utter_v these_o word_n let_v we_o not_o abolish_v the_o doctrine_n itself_o because_o it_o be_v sure_a and_o permanent_a even_o as_o god_n the_o author_n thereof_o be_v &_o can_v be_v better_v or_o make_v worse_o be_v humane_a corruption_n special_o as_o in_o regard_n of_o it_o own_o nature_n so_o this_o be_v certain_a also_o that_o in_o all_o godly_a wisdom_n and_o understanding_n rather_o the_o abuse_n of_o it_o shall_v be_v take_v away_o than_o the_o doctrine_n itself_o with_o hold_v or_o if_o that_o can_v be_v yet_o the_o same_o deliver_v with_o such_o holy_a caution_n as_o in_o respect_n of_o the_o ungodly_a that_o they_o be_v charge_v in_o the_o name_n of_o the_o lord_n jesus_n but_o to_o lay_v unclean_a or_o violent_a hand_n upon_o the_o sacred_a truth_n of_o god_n not_o belong_v unto_o they_o and_o such_o comfort_n to_o the_o godly_a that_o it_o shall_v rather_o speak_v in_o a_o clear_a and_o loud_a voice_n then_o be_v mute_a and_o dumb_a as_o we_o say_v in_o the_o church_n and_o this_o beside_o that_o it_o be_v god_n own_o ordinance_n and_o therefore_o shall_v prevail_v it_o be_v more_o equal_a in_o all_o upright_a judgement_n and_o therefore_o also_o to_o be_v embrace_v to_o the_o minor_a affirm_v that_o the_o doctrine_n teach_v certainty_n of_o salvation_n etc._n etc._n make_v man_n secure_a and_o careless_a we_o answer_v that_o it_o be_v not_o so_o if_o they_o consider_v the_o call_v upon_o he_o in_o who_o they_o believe_v not_o so_o in_o the_o fruit_n and_o effect_n follow_v our_o repentance_n seal_v up_o also_o the_o sincerity_n and_o soundness_n thereof_o in_o our_o be_v promise_v therefore_o from_o this_o that_o god_n have_v promise_v we_o salvation_n it_o will_v not_o follow_v that_o we_o present_o lie_v hold_v thereon_o and_o therefore_o we_o can_v from_o the_o promise_n that_o be_v make_v unto_o we_o concern_v our_o salvation_n conclude_v that_o we_o ought_v to_o be_v sure_o concern_v it_o as_o if_o it_o be_v already_o accomplish_v and_o perform_v can_v perform_v because_o they_o deny_v he_o and_o defy_v he_o from_o their_o heart_n this_o no_v counterfeit_v or_o corrupt_a christian_n can_v accomplish_v for_o the_o false_a christian_n as_o papist_n join_v their_o work_n at_o the_o least_o with_o he_o and_o the_o carnal_a professor_n in_o the_o corrupt_a course_n of_o his_o conversation_n deny_v his_o power_n to_o mortification_n and_o sanctification_n therefore_o i_o separate_v from_o all_o and_o everye_o one_o of_o they_o in_o strength_n of_o persuasion_n in_o particular_a application_n and_o the_o fruit_n of_o faith_n and_o christian_n man_n &_o woman_n here_o upon_o earth_n be_v not_o without_o cause_n right_a honourable_a and_o right_a worshipful_a neither_o yet_o unfite_o compare_v by_o the_o holy_a ghost_n in_o the_o canonical_a scripture_n to_o a_o continual_a combat_n and_o warfaire_n of_o which_o as_o the_o write_a word_n itself_o in_o the_o sound_a doctrine_n and_o approve_a example_n thereof_o concern_v pitiful_a by_o how_o much_o it_o cross_v even_o their_o own_o opinion_n &_o practice_n for_o how_o can_v that_o conceit_n of_o they_o touch_v merit_n before_o christ_n and_o special_o of_o merit_v eternal_a life_n stand_v with_o the_o doctrine_n of_o doubt_v see_v that_o merit_n or_o absolute_a obedience_n special_o if_o man_n deal_v with_o one_o that_o be_v just_a as_o christ_n who_o be_v justice_n itself_o must_v needs_o shut_v out_o doubt_v touch_v that_o we_o be_v sure_o we_o have_v deserve_v and_o he_o can_v choose_v but_o of_o justice_n give_v and_o grant_v but_o such_o vain_a fantesy_n must_v they_o fall_v into_o that_o fall_v away_v from_o the_o faith_n and_o truth_n of_o the_o word_n and_o will_v lift_v up_o themselves_o against_o christ_n our_o saviour_n that_o so_o refuse_v grace_n offer_v and_o feel_v it_o where_o it_o be_v not_o to_o be_v find_v they_o may_v vanish_v away_o through_o the_o disquietness_n of_o their_o spirit_n in_o the_o vain_a imagination_n of_o their_o own_o mind_n concern_v the_o other_o it_o be_v very_o lamentable_a that_o in_o so_o large_a abundance_n of_o god_n gracious_a promise_n and_o in_o so_o faithful_a and_o continual_a performance_n of_o they_o special_o to_o his_o own_o people_n whereof_o not_o only_o the_o word_n but_o the_o world_n do_v yield_v we_o a_o infinite_a cloud_n of_o witness_n man_n mind_n shall_v yet_o be_v replenish_v with_o fearfulness_n and_o doubt_v but_o such_o and_o so_o great_a be_v satan_n malice_n against_o we_o and_o so_o dull_a and_o slow_a of_o heart_n be_v we_o to_o believe_v special_o when_o we_o regard_v our_o manifold_a unworthiness_n our_o grievous_a transgression_n or_o the_o severity_n and_o justice_n of_o the_o lord_n judgement_n that_o it_o be_v more_o than_o marvelous_a if_o any_o man_n be_v find_v in_o better_a estate_n consider_v i_o say_v either_o what_o we_o be_v by_o nature_n or_o regard_v withal_o what_o after_o our_o inlight_n and_o regeneration_n begin_v in_o we_o a_o world_n there_o be_v of_o relic_n &_o remainder_n of_o corruption_n in_o we_o which_o though_o they_o do_v not_o utter_o deface_v and_o put_v out_o the_o good_a work_n of_o god_n in_o we_o because_o it_o be_v to_o majestical_a and_o powerful_a to_o be_v batter_v and_o beat_v down_o by_o so_o weak_a a_o adversary_n yet_o do_v they_o so_o backward_o and_o hinder_v the_o same_o that_o in_o this_o life_n we_o can_v not_o attain_v to_o that_o fullness_n of_o faith_n which_o we_o great_o hunger_n and_o thirst_n after_o and_o though_o through_o god_n goodness_n we_o have_v gain_v somewhat_o yet_o many_o time_n we_o find_v those_o grace_n so_o eclipse_v and_o darken_v in_o we_o that_o they_o seem_v to_o be_v as_o if_o they_o be_v not_o but_o what_o mean_v we_o to_o travail_v in_o the_o strengthen_n of_o these_o point_n which_o in_o everye_o man_n mind_n and_o mouth_n almost_o be_v so_o clear_a and_o usual_a as_o nothing_o more_o the_o thing_n rather_o that_o we_o shall_v strive_v unto_o be_v this_o namely_o that_o sith_o by_o corrupt_a opinion_n we_o be_v or_o may_v be_v daily_o assault_v outward_o and_o by_o satan_n subtle_a suggestion_n and_o our_o own_o curse_a corruption_n we_o be_v continual_o provoke_v inward_o as_o to_o every_o other_o evil_n general_o so_o particular_o to_o this_o sore_a sickness_n of_o our_o soul_n distrust_n or_o doubt_v we_o shall_v in_o the_o holy_a wisdom_n &_o clear_a light_n of_o god_n word_n and_o also_o by_o the_o all_o sufficient_a strength_n and_o power_n of_o the_o bless_a spirit_n so_o labour_v to_o look_v unto_o ourselves_o as_o that_o we_o suffer_v not_o ourselves_o either_o to_o be_v infect_v with_o the_o pleasant_a poison_n of_o false_a doctrine_n or_o to_o be_v draw_v to_o discomfort_v through_o the_o doubtfulness_n of_o our_o heart_n for_o as_o the_o former_a hazerd_v what_o say_v i_o nay_o overthrow_v the_o health_n of_o our_o soul_n &_o that_o more_o dangerous_o by_o much_o than_o any_o bodily_a poison_n do_v or_o can_v do_v the_o state_n of_o our_o outward_a man_n for_o in_o the_o midst_n of_o this_o the_o mind_n may_v be_v safe_a and_o sure_a whereas_o in_o the_o other_o special_o persist_v in_o there_o ensue_v everlasting_a destruction_n both_o of_o body_n and_o soul_n so_o the_o latter_a strong_o hail_v down_o upon_o we_o and_o violent_o bring_v unto_o we_o all_o heaviness_n of_o heart_n and_o fearful_a disquitnesse_n and_o together_o with_o the_o same_o as_o a_o peculiar_a effect_n thereof_o all_o manner_n of_o unwillingness_n unfitnesse_n and_o disabilitie_n in_o and_o about_o the_o service_n of_o christ_n whether_o public_o in_o the_o congregation_n or_o private_o in_o the_o family_n as_o also_o for_o the_o careful_a accomplishment_n of_o our_o christian_a duty_n either_o at_o home_n or_o abroad_o for_o what_o likelihood_n or_o probability_n be_v there_o that_o he_o shall_v appear_v before_o god_n or_o do_v good_a unto_o man_n who_o spirit_n be_v disquiet_v within_o he_o
